It took me a year almost to finally understand who to use it and I had a lot of frustration in the process simply because my ADHD brain doesn't think like those that created it so it wasn't intuitive to me. But now I can't live without it. By far head and shoulders above all the other text to speech readers I have tried and I think I have tried them all. Thanks you Speechify. I love this software.

Ratings and Reviews

Great but wish it was easier to search through pdfs.

Im in a PA program and we use pretty dense textbooks and most of them are either online or PDF so speechify is great help me take in large amounts of info. My only beef with speechify is that I'm not able to click the links embeded in the text of the PDF to get specifially where I need to be in my huge textbooks. Also if I search a keyword it takes enormous amounts of time to load where that keyowrd is in the book. This makes the web app pretty useless for me so I just use the plug in where you can highlight passages and have it read to you but I feel I loose a few features using it this way. I hope that future updates allow you to click embeded links and allow you to search PDFs quicker.

Sometimes works to increase efficiency.

Part of the issue is that text is in so many formats that the app struggles. Scientific/medical journals and textbooks are usually in a two column layout which the app struggles with. It also can't skip headers/footers very well. May online educational modules have background script that is read instead of the text that I highlight for the app to read. It also struggles in similar scenarios, eg online textbooks where it restarts from the first line even if you're hundreds of pages deep, and there's no way to start where you want it to. The screenshot functionality could be a workaround for this if it was more efficient, but there is no shortcut for it in the desktop app (very unclear why everything else has a customizable shortcut). Unfortunately you can't queue up screenshots either (but that would be more of a bonus than a necessary feature). The chrome app has a screenshot function (with shortcut) but it struggles with scrolling/clicking while reading from a prior screenshot. Overall, $140 is a big ask for an app that mostly just increases efficiency reading online news articles and blogs. Although the OCR functionality is impressive, it still really struggles in a lot of real world use cases.

Speechify Review

Speechify is quickly making waves in the world of text-to-speech technology, and for good reason.

Cliff Weitzman, a dyslexic college student from Brown University, founded the app in 2017 to revolutionize how we consume written content. Since then, Speechify has grown from a startup with a noble vision to one of the best text-to-speech apps by enhancing reading speed, helping those with ADHD and dyslexia, and more.

In this Speechify review, I'll discuss what exactly Speechify is and who would use it.

From there, I'll show you how to get started with Speechify and then dive into its features. I'll explain what each feature does, as well as how to use each one so you get a good understanding of how to use Speechify and what it's capable of.

Finally, I'll share Speechify's pros and cons and the best alternatives that I've tried so you can make the best decision for yourself!

What is Speechify?

The Speechify homepage.

Cliff Weitzman, a dyslexic college student at Brown University , founded and developed Speechify in 2017 to assist him in staying on par with his class readings. Realizing the need for a tool to help others like him, Weitzman conceptualized Speechify as an innovative solution to address the struggles of reading and information consumption.

Speechify's main draw is its advanced text-to-speech feature, where you can paste text and read it aloud in over 100 natural-sounding AI voices in 50 languages. You can change the voice, accent, and language and adjust the speaking rate as desired.

This helps users read 9x faster than the average reading speed and helps those with ADHD, dyslexia, and general reading challenges retain information more effectively. You can use it online, as a Chrome extension or download it as an app for iOS or Android.

In addition, Speechify offers an AI voiceover generator offering over 200 AI voices in over 60 languages to create natural-sounding voiceovers for advertisements, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and more.

That's Speechify in a nutshell: its origin story, its primary features, and how it can be used. I'll dive deeper into its features later in the article and show you how it works!

Who Should Use Speechify Text-to-Speech?

Several groups of people can benefit significantly from using Speechify's text-to-speech feature:

  • Writers & Editors: For writers like myself, listening to what I've written helps me catch errors or areas that need improvement, like typos, grammar mistakes, and awkward phrasing that I might have missed while reading silently. Speechify's text-to-speech feature is an extra pair of eyes and ears, ensuring my writing is polished and error-free.
  • Individuals with Dyslexia & ADHD: Dyslexia and ADHD can make reading a frustrating and challenging experience. With Speechify, these individuals can overcome those obstacles by listening to text instead of struggling to read it. The ability to adjust the speaking rate and choose from various voices gives them an accessible way to consume written content.
  • Students: Speechify allows students to listen to their study materials, helping them absorb information more effectively and improve their reading speed (this is especially useful if you're behind on an assignment). Using the Speechify app, students can also convert their textbooks and study materials into audio format by taking a picture of the page.
  • Businesses: Speechify helps businesses enhance productivity by converting written documents and emails into natural-sounding voiceovers. It enables employees to listen to reports, presentations, and training materials on the go or while multitasking. As a result, businesses can create engaging learning experiences for their employees.
  • Teachers: By converting lesson plans and teaching materials into audio, teachers can create a more inclusive learning experience accommodating different learning styles. Incorporating Speechify into reading activities can also help improve students' reading comprehension and fluency.

Who Should Use Speechify AI Voice Studio?

Speechify's AI Voice Studio can be used by individuals who want to enhance their productivity and make information more accessible. Here are a few examples:

  • Podcast hosts: With Speechify's voice generator, hosts can easily convert their podcast scripts into natural-sounding audio. Whether that's for the entire podcast episode or only introductions and ad reads, this saves lots of time and effort. As a result, hosts can focus on creating engaging content while the AI technology takes care of the narration.
  • Course creators: Course creators can save time, money, and their vocal cords by automating their course voiceovers with Speechify's AI Voice Studio ! This also allows students to listen and learn at their own pace.
  • YouTube creators: Creating captivating videos on YouTube requires visual and auditory appeal. With Speechify's voice generator, YouTubers can effortlessly convert their scripts into high-quality audio narration. This saves time in recording and editing and ensures a professional and polished delivery that keeps viewers engaged.
  • Audiobook producers: Speechify's AI Voice Studio is a game-changer for audiobook producers. Instead of hiring voice actors or spending hours recording themselves, producers can input the text into Speechify and generate professional-quality narration. This not only saves time and money but also ensures consistent and high-quality audio throughout the entire audiobook.
  • Phone systems: Speechify's voice generator can also create automated phone system messages. By converting text into speech, businesses can provide their customers a seamless and professional experience, enhancing their overall brand image.
  • Sales professionals: Sales professionals can use Speechify's AI Voice Studio to create persuasive sales presentations. By converting scripts into natural-sounding audio, they can deliver captivating pitches and save time in meeting preparation. Speechify leaves a lasting impression on potential clients, allowing sales professionals to focus on building relationships and closing deals.

Getting Started with Speechify

Selecting the Try for free button on the Speechify homepage.

To create my Speechify account, I went to the Speechify homepage and selected “Try for Free.”

Going through the process of creating an account with Speechify.

Speechify quickly showed me how it works and asked a few basic questions so I could get the most out of it. It was quick and easy, and I found the information useful.

I hit “Next” to continue and “Try for free” once complete. I then created my free account with Speechify by logging into my Google account (you can also place your email and password to sign up). Finally, I was offered a free trial of their Premium plan for three days.

The Speechify dashboard.

I was then taken to my Speechify dashboard. The interface was clean and straightforward, and I could turn my text files into speech.

Speechify Features

Here are Speechify's main features that I will explain and show you how to use:

  • Text to Speech
  • AI Voice Studio

1. Text to Speech

Speechify's free online text-to-speech generator.

Speechify has a free, online text-to-speech generator with over 100 natural-sounding AI voices in 50 languages that anyone can access. You don't even have to create an account to use it!

All you do is type your text, select your voice and speed, and press the “Play” button. Within seconds, Speechify converts your written text into clear and natural-sounding speech.

The different ways you can listen to text using Speechify.

There are several different ways you can listen to text using Speechify. These include:

  • Chrome extension
  • iPhone & iPad app
  • Mac & Android app
  • Edge add-on

On the Speechify app on Android and iOS, you can take a picture of the page you want to read, and it will recognize the text and convert it into speech. It's been rated the #1 text-to-speech app in the app store, with over 250,000 5-star reviews!

The main draw is that it can read at a speed nine times faster than the average reading speed, meaning you can acquire more knowledge within a shorter period.

Here's how I used the text-to-speech feature in my Speechify account.

How to Use Text-to-Speech with Speechify

The different types of documents you can upload to Speechify.

I uploaded a new file by going to “New” on the top left of my dashboard.

Pressing the play button to listen to text using Speechify.

Immediately, I could listen to my text by pressing the play button at the bottom!

Selecting an AI voice from the library using the text to speech feature in Speechify.

On the left, I could choose from over 100 AI voices in 50 languages. I like how they threw in some recognizable and popular voices like Snoop Dogg, Mr. President, and Gwyneth Paltrow to keep things interesting.

Adjusting the reading speed by sliding the toggle up and down to make it faster or slower using Speechify's text to speech feature.

I could also adjust the reading speed by moving the toggle up and down. This helped me tailor the speech to my preferences, whether I wanted a slow, soothing voice for a bedtime story or a faster pace for an information-packed article to save me time.

Selecting More using the Speechify text to speech feature.

The “More” option reveals the settings where I could turn highlighting, auto-scroll, and dark mode on or off. To maintain a smooth flow, the voice could also be instructed to exclude reading headings and other forms of content.

Selecting Share as Soundbite to share listening soundbites with anyone.

The “Share as Soundbite” button at the bottom allowed me to share the document with anyone by generating a link! They don't even have to have a Speechify account.

And that's how easy it is to use Speechify's text-to-speech feature to transform your text files into speech! I love how straightforward Speechify's interface is, allowing anyone to convert text into spoken words effortlessly. And the best part? You don't need to create an account to access their free online text-to-speech generator.

I was also really impressed by the accuracy of the speech. The AI voices sounded incredibly natural, with intonations that made it feel like I was listening to an actual person. It was almost hard to believe that a machine generated it.

2. AI Voice Studio

Speechify's AI Voice Studio landing page.

Next, we have Speechify's AI Voice Studio feature, where you can access over 200 AI voices in over 60 languages to create natural-sounding AI text-to-speech voiceovers! You can develop voiceovers for various purposes, like advertisements, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and more.

It only takes minutes:

  • Enter the text you wish to be spoken to in the field.
  • Choose a voice and adjust the listening speed, tone, pauses, pitch, volume, and pronunciation.
  • Click “Share” or “Export” to export the file.

Once again, the interface is straightforward, and the Speechify Academy is full of tips to help along the way.

Here is how I used Speechify's AI Voice Studio!

How to Use AI Voice Studio with Speechify

Selecting Create Professional Voice Over using Speechify.

In my Library, I selected “New” on the top left and went to “Create Professional Voice Over.”

The Speechify Studio homepage.

I was taken to the Speechify AI Voice homepage, where I could decide how I wanted to start creating my voiceover.

Speechify templates.

Immediately at the top, Speechify has a range of thirteen templates to get inspired by. I found it helpful to browse the templates and see how other users have utilized them in their projects.

The different projects you can make in Speechify's AI Voice Studio.

Underneath were all the different ways to create a voiceover project with Speechify. In addition to creating a classic voiceover, I could also:

  • Create a video
  • Dub a video
  • Clone a voice
  • Transcribe a video
  • Create an AI avatar
  • Script to video

I started with the classic “Create Voice Over” from scratch (you can access most of these other options within the studio editor anyway).

Speechify's Voice Over studio.

The Voice Over studio was very clearly laid out and easy to navigate.

I could type or copy and paste my script into a text block or add a new one with a different voice and settings. I could also preview the voiceover by selecting the play button on the timeline at the bottom.

Selecting and editing an AI voice in Speechify's Voice Over studio.

On the left, I was impressed by how many avatars and languages I could choose from. Once selected, I chose the speaking tone and speed. I could also add pauses in my text wherever I felt it appropriate to make my voice sound natural.

Advanced voice over settings when creating a voice over using Speechify.

The Advanced tab took me to a whole new level of customization. I could fine-tune every aspect of the voice, from pitch and volume to pronunciation. It gave me complete control over how my voiceover would sound, allowing me to create a truly professional result.

Editing options when using the Voice Over feature using Speechify.

Even further to the left were some more editing options:

  • Import Script: Drag and drop, upload a .txt or .docx file, or import a script via YouTube video URL.
  • Music: Upload a .mp3 file or choose from the stock music library.
  • Images/Videos: Upload your images as .jpg, .png, or .mp4 files, or choose from thousands of stock images and videos provided by Pixabay.
  • Voice Cloning: Upload a 15-second audio sample with no background noise with a microphone or click and drag/upload a .mp3 or .wav audio file.
  • Avatar: Choose from different AI avatars to bring your voiceover to life.

And that's an overview of how to use Speechify's AI Voice Studio! Compared to other AI text-to-speech generators I've tried, Speechify's AI Voice Studio stands out for its user-friendly interface and extensive customization options that make natural-sounding AI voiceovers effortless. The layout is clear and easy to navigate for a seamless experience.

3. AI Avatars

Speechify's AI Video Generator landing page.

If text-to-speech and AI voiceovers weren't enough, wait until you try Speechify's AI Video Generator ! With hundreds of customizable AI avatars, you can bring your voiceover to life in minutes rather than investing time and money in a traditional video shoot.

AI avatars are excellent for livening up presentations and sales decks that capture viewers' attention. The AI Video Generator syncs your voiceover with the chosen avatar's movements, creating a visually engaging video.

Plus, you can use Speechify's AI avatars in multiple formats on any social media platform, whether Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, or YouTube. You'll also get full control over customization like your avatar's tone, emotion, and more to make it as lifelike as possible.

To top it off, editing couldn't be easier with Speechify's intuitive user interface and drag-and-drop functionality. You'll also be able to integrate it with your favorite platforms, including Notion, WordPress, HubSpot, and more!

How to Use AI Avatars with Speechify

Selecting Create Professional Voice Over in Speechify.

In my Speechify dashboard, under “New,” I went to “Create Professional Voice Over.”

Selecting Create AI Avatar in Speechify Studio.

This took me to the Speechify Studio, where I selected “Create AI Avatar.”

Selecting an AI avatar using Speechify.

I could then select my avatar, and it appeared on the screen. Adding an AI avatar to my Speechify project couldn't have been easier!

In terms of customization, I could only change the background color. I also couldn't move the avatar around the screen or adjust its size.

If you want full access to all of the AI avatars and customization, ensure you're on the right plan or contact the sales team.

Pros & Cons of Speechify

Here are the pros and cons of using Speechify I've identified.

  • User-friendly interface is easy to navigate.
  • Translates your written content into more than 60 languages.
  • Assists individuals with dyslexia, ADHD, and general reading challenges.
  • Enhances reading speed by 9x.
  • Can read emails aloud.
  • Listen to your favorite audiobooks.
  • The Chrome extension further enhances the convenience of converting text-to-speech.
  • Lots of customization options for voiceovers.
  • The human-like quality of these AI voices is some of the best I've tried.
  • Variety of over 100 text-to-speech voices and over 200 voices for voiceovers.
  • Create custom voiceovers.
  • AI avatar video generator.
  • Available on desktop or mobile.
  • Advanced features require a subscription.
  • Some voices might take more work to customize to sound realistic.
  • It lacks some features that might be useful, like an AI Writer and Art Generator.
  • Reading speed can be unnecessarily fast.

Best Speechify Alternatives I've Tried

Here are the best Speechify alternatives you'll find that I have also personally tried!

Lovo.ai homepage.

Lovo.ai is a highly acclaimed platform known for its advanced AI technology that generates realistic voices and converts text into speech. It stands out as one of the most user-friendly and reliable platforms available.

Lovo.ai offers the widest range of over 500 AI voices, 20 emotions, and 150 languages. It also has its own AI writer , art generator, and video editor ! However, it does not have AI avatars you can use to lip-sync your text like Speechify does.

If you're looking for the best AI voice generator with the most realistic AI voices and languages, I'd highly recommend going for Lovo.ai. You could use Lovo for reading text, but Speechify's Chrome extension is much more suitable.

While Speechify can also be used for AI voiceovers, it places more of an emphasis on enhancing your reading speed and helping individuals with reading disabilities. If you're looking for a platform along those lines, go with Speechify!

Read our  Lovo Review  or visit  Lovo .

Murf AI homepage.

Murf AI allows individuals like product developers, podcasters, educators, and business leaders to convert text to speech, add voiceovers to videos, and more! You'll get access to 120 AI voice actors in 20 languages and accents.

While Murf AI and Speechify have similar features, they have a few key differences. Regarding the text-to-speech feature, Speechify primarily focuses on increasing reading speed and helping those with reading disabilities. Meanwhile, Murf AI offers text-to-speech but is geared more toward content creators.

Murf AI also has excellent Google Slides and Canva add-ons, while Speechify does not. However, Speechify has realistic AI avatars that will lip-sync your text, adding a visual element to your content.

If you're someone who wants to enhance their reading time, has a reading disability, or wants to take advantage of AI avatars, consider Speechify. If you're a content creator who wants to use excellent realistic AII voiceovers for your content, I'd suggest going for Murf AI!

Read our  Murf Review  or visit  Murf .

Synthesys homepage.

Synthesys uses artificial intelligence to generate videos using actual human voices to produce incredibly realistic voiceovers. All you need to do is enter the text, and Synthesys will use Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology to convert it into voiceovers. You can also create AI videos using avatars or generate original art instantly with their AI art generator!

Synthesys and Speechify both have AI voice generators. Synthesys offers over 300 voices in 140 languages, while Speechify provides over 200 high-quality voices in over 60 languages.

In addition, both platforms have AI video generators where you can create videos using AI avatars in minutes. Synthesys offers over 60 avatars, while Speechify has hundreds of avatars.

Synthesys and Speechify mainly differentiate in their use cases. Speechify's text-to-speech features are primarily intended for those who want to read faster or have reading challenges. Meanwhile, Synthesys' text-to-speech feature focuses more on being a tool used for commercial use, such as voiceovers for podcasts, marketing, etc.

If you want a platform with a voice and video generator with an integrated AI art generator that's more focused on content creation, I'd go with Synthesys. If you want to read faster, have difficulties reading, or want access to more AI avatars for your videos, I'd choose Speechify.

However, WellSaid can only be used for English voiceovers. On the other hand, Speechify offers over 200 voices in more than 20 languages and has AI avatars and audiobooks.

If you're looking for an excellent tool that solely focuses on realistic-sounding AI voices in English, try WellSaid. For access to more languages and a more comprehensive range of features, I would recommend Speechify!

Speechify Review: My Experience

My experience with Speechify has been nothing short of exceptional. As a writer, Speechify has allowed me to listen to my writing to help catch errors I might've missed.

The user-friendly interface made it easy for me to navigate the platform and change the speed to the one I was most comfortable with. Plus, the Speechify Chrome extension has only made accessing the text-to-speech feature that much easier.

The range of hundreds of voices is also impressive. Whether I need a professional tone for a training video or a playful voice for an advertisement, Speechify offers me numerous options and endless customization. The fact that it supports over 60 languages allows me to cater to a global audience, and the AI avatars add a personal touch to my content.

I hope you found my Speechify review helpful! I highly recommend Speechify to anyone who needs a reliable and versatile text-to-speech tool. With its extensive voice options, speed adjustments, user-friendly interface, and seamless integration, Speechify stands out from its competitors.

I highly suggest giving Speechify a try to see how it can enhance your reading and content-creation process!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Speechify is worth the money. This is particularly true for those who want to enhance their reading speed or have ADHD or dyslexia. It's also an excellent AI voice generator to add voiceovers to your video content! Trying out the free version can help determine if upgrading is worthwhile.

Is Speechify really free?

Speechify offers a free and paid version for text-to-speech and the Speechify studio. The free plan has limited features for both, but it's a great starting point to get a feel for what Speechify offers. Try the free version first and decide from there whether or not you want to upgrade.

What are the disadvantages of Speechify?

There are some disadvantages I encountered when using Speechify. For one, Speechify may be costly for some people. On the free versions, some key features (e.g., the ability to download) are limited, which can be frustrating. Lastly, some of the voices might take more work to sound realistic.

Can Speechify be trusted?

Speechify is a company that is widely recognized for providing text-to-speech services. It has a strong reputation for safety, making it suitable for everyone, including children. Speechify Review: Is This Text-To-Speech App Worth The Hype?

Read our Speechify review to discover what you need to know before using Speechify, how it can empower your life, and if it’s worth your time and money.

Speechify reads any text you want for free. This helped my editing process as a freelance writer because before I used Speechify, I missed obvious mistakes even after proofreading articles several times. This was frustrating, so I decided to give Speechify a shot.

After a few months of using Speechify, I feel like it boosted the quality of my work. By hearing my article out loud, spotting mistakes is easy. If anything sounds out of place, all I have to do is tweak some words to make it easier to read.

Below, I’ll review Speechify and cover everything you need to know before buying the app.

What Is Speechify?

Speechify pricing, freelance writers and editors, people with dyslexia, busy individuals , how does speechify work, optical character recognition, instant translation, it has a word limit of 150,000 words, the marketing is aggressive, it isn’t 100 percent accurate, dragon anywhere, rev transcription , speechify review criteria, why you can trust me.

Speechify allows you to paste and convert text to audio accurately. But what sets it apart from other software is that it uses optical character recognition, which turns physical books into audiobooks.

Cliff Weitzman, a dyslexic person, founded Speechify in 2016. He finds reading challenging, and this makes day-to-day tasks stressful. Speechify helps people with dyslexia by turning text into speech. Instead of reading a hundred-word email , the Speechify software will read your emails to you. Or, if you want to enjoy a book, take a picture of the pages, and change it into an audiobook.

Speechify is also popular amongst freelance writers, editors, and content creators since the text-to-speech features assist with content editing . I noticed that my brain runs on autopilot while reading my work and often skips over mistakes. As a result, my published articles and emails can have obvious spelling and readability problems. But spotting errors is much simpler if you have a second voice reading your article back to you.

Speechify currently offers the following plans:

  • A basic free plan.
  • A Premium plan costs $11.58 per month.

Speechify review: Pricing

The basic plan is helpful if you’re new to Speechify and want to get a feel for the platform. It gives you access to the text-to-voice feature, so you can paste an article into Speechify and listen to it.

But it’s pretty limiting as you can’t scan and listen to the printed text or save files across devices. For this, you’ll have to sign up for the premium option. With Speechify Premium, you can use optical character recognition to take pictures of text and convert them into audio. You can also translate text into over 60 languages.

Who Is Speechify For?

Speechify can empower the lives of:

  • Freelance writers and editors
  • People with dyslexia
  • Students
  • Busy individuals

I found that listening to my first draft instantly increased the quality of my work. Previously, I’d read my article aloud , and after a few revisions, I’d publish it. However, I’d always miss errors because my brain subconsciously replaced them with the correct word.

Speechify review for freelance writers and editors

Fortunately, Speechify reads my work back to me as is, so it’s easy to spot spelling mistakes and hard-to-read sentences.

The founder of Speechify was diagnosed with dyslexia in the third grade, and after decades of reading difficulty, he founded Speechify to help those with dyslexia. Simply open the app, take a picture of some text, and within seconds, a voice will read it back to you. You might also be interested in our Draft2Digital review .

Speechify can benefit the lives of students who learn faster while listening than reading. If you must read a lengthy book and complete an assignment, consider taking pictures of the pages, and Speechify will read it aloud.

This is also beneficial when you’re behind on a project. Depending on your listening speed, Speechify can boost productivity by 40 percent so that you can complete assignments in half the time. You might also be interested in our Dropbox Paper review .

Leaders in the self-improvement industry love saying that the average CEO reads 52 books yearly. However, reading a book a week is impractical for most people since it requires an hour a day.

Luckily, Speechify understands that we live busy lives and will let you paste an ebook into the platform. Then, after a few seconds, you can click play and listen to your favorite authors while stuck in traffic, running errands, or waiting for your children at school.

Signing up for Speechify is straightforward. First, head to Speechify.com and select the “Try For Free” icon in the upper right-hand corner. From here, answer a quick questionnaire, and you’ll be able to upload text and listen to the audio.

Alternatively, you could take a picture of the book you’d like to listen to, choose the voice you want to read the text, and Speechify will have your audio file ready.

This free trial is only three days long, so you’ll have to upgrade to premium if you want to continue using these features. Fortunately, Speechify will send you an email notification on the second day, so you won’t forget to cancel your subscription if you aren’t interested.

If you’re continuing with Speechify, enter your credit card details, and enjoy the premium experience. This includes 30 voice options, 20 languages, and a notetaking taskbar.

My favorite Speechify feature is Inbox Zero. Instead of reading through emails, I can use the Speechify Chrome extension and listen to them while getting ready for work.

Inbox Zero

I often miss important details in emails as my brain goes on autopilot. Luckily, this second voice helps me retain information because I can focus on understanding the text.

You can also adjust the reading speed between 100 to 900 words per minute. Although the low and high ends of this range are impractical, I find the sweet spot around 230 to 300 words per minute. This is 2.5 times faster than most people read.

Speechify allows you to take a picture of writing and convert it into audio. This is called optical character recognition, and it turns your favorite books into audiobooks without subscribing to another app.

Optical character recognition

To do this, open the Speechify mobile app, click the blue camera button in the bottom right-hand corner, and hold your phone while the software recognizes the text. Speechify changes this into an audiobook, and you can listen on the go. This feature can be helpful for large companies since it reduces paperwork.

The instant translation sets Speechify apart from other voice software like Rev Transcription and Dragon Anywhere. When pasting text in Speechify, you can convert it into 60 languages like Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Chinese.

Instant translation

This is perfect for freelance writers who’re creating content in multiple languages. Instead of rewriting an article, use Speechify, and you’ll save hours. Speechify has an accuracy score of over 90 percent, but you still want to proofread the output to spot any mistakes.

Areas For Improvement

Although Speechify is a valuable tool, it has flaws:

  • It has a word limit of 150,000 words
  • The marketing is aggressive
  • It isn’t 100 percent accurate

When I first signed up for Speechify, I thought you could convert an unlimited amount of text into HD audio. However, this isn’t the case. Speechify has a limit of 150,000 words with premium voices per month. After this, you can only listen to the standard voices. This is problematic because the audio is robotic and irritating after the first 150 pages of a book. Instead, try Audible if you’re looking for a tool that lets you listen to multiple monthly books.

To learn more, read our Audible review .

You’ll notice that the marketing on the free plan to get you to upgrade to premium is pushy and can interfere with your experience. On the other hand, Speechify is constantly trying to get you to buy the premium plan, so if you’re looking for a basic and free text-to-speech tool, try Google’s API-powered software.

I wouldn’t say Speechify is a replacement for audiobook tools like Audible because the optical character recognition doesn’t get everything right. If you’re listening to audiobooks with Speechify, you’ll notice that sometimes the words and sentences don’t make sense.

Unfortunately, no tool is 100 percent accurate, and you’ll have to deal with these errors as technology advances and engineers develop better algorithms.

Speechify Competitors

Here are some Speechify competitors to consider when shopping for voice and dictation software:

  • Rev Transcription

While Speechify focuses on converting text and pictures into audio, Dragon Anywhere is a dictation app that allows you to create and share documents by speaking on your mobile phone or desktop.

Most dictation tools can only handle 30 seconds of recording before it cuts you off, which interferes with your flow state. Fortunately, Dragon Anywhere doesn’t have this limit, making it a practical option for content creation.

You can even use Dragon Anywhere to edit articles. Simply say “Select” followed by the phrase you want to highlight, and you can talk it over to replace it, all without touching the screen or keyboard.

Read our detailed Dragon Anywhere review .

Rev Transcription specializes in:

  • Transcriptions by a human or AI
  • Subtitles in multiple languages
  • Live captions for Zoom and Google Meet

This benefits the lives of content creators like YouTubers, writers, and marketers. For example, if you’re recording a podcast and it does well, consider transcribing it into text with Rev Transcription.

Read our Rev Transcription review .

When testing Speechify, I used these criteria to see if it’s worth your time and money.:

  • Ease of use
  • Affordability
  • Additional features
  • Listening experience

After using Speechify to help my editing process , I can safely say it meets criteria 1, 2 & 4, but it does not rate well for criteria 3- affordability, or 5- listening experience. It sounds robotic and can be hard to listen to. Although the premium voices are a bit better, there’s still an AI feel.

I’ve been writing content for over four years, and until recently, I still struggled with editing . I usually take a break after writing and before editing so I can reset, but mistakes still crept through.

This is because my brain fills in the blanks and misses errors. I was happy to learn about Speechify; noticing mistakes and overused phrases became easy when using this app. Although it isn’t perfect, this app helped me tidy up my content. Speechify Review: The Bottom Line

Speechify is a valuable tool for freelance writers, students, and people with dyslexia since it converts text to speech within seconds. In short, if you want a tool that instantly transforms your text into audio, Speechify is worth it.

Text-to-speech app Speechify launches Gmail integration and voice cloning

speechify text to speech

Text-to-speech startup Speechify is launching a new version of its iOS app (v3.0) with features like a redesigned home page, the ability to scan documents, Gmail and learning platform Canvas integration, and an explore page for in-app content.

Speechify is revamping its homepage to provide shortcuts to import files with options like iOS Files, Google Drive, Kindle, Gmail, Text, Scan and Link. The new update has a scan feature, which lets users scan a physical document and import the text to listen to it later. Users can simultaneously scan two pages of a book as well.

The remodeled home page also has an Apple Fitness Ring-styled daily reading goal, which you can adjust.

The company is introducing a feature to let users read their emails by integrating their Gmail accounts. The app can also help users import their PDF attachments into the Speechify app. The startup is also launching a Canvas integration with the learning management system so students can access their homework assignments. Plus, there is a new iCloud integration that automatically brings your files to Speechify.

Speechify is taking advantage of interactive widgets features in iOS 17 and launching new widgets to easily import sources, track reading progress and continue listening to an imported document. The new app will also let users listen to tracks offline in premium voices.

The company said that the app now has new pre-set AI voices with improved speech models. It has also updated the celebrity voices of Snoop Dogg and MrBeast. Users can also get an AI-powered summary of a document and article, and the app can read it out loud.

Another AI-powered feature that is part of Speechify 3.0 is users’ ability to clone their voice and have it read out text. Last year, Apple released an accessibility-related feature called Personal Voice, which creates a voice that sounds like you . Earlier this month, Clubhouse also released a feature that reads your chats in your voice .

speechify text to speech

Speechify says it has 23 million users when you are signing up on the app. The company didn’t clarify if this number was indicative of registered users or active users. The startup has forged partnerships like Instagram co-founders’ app Artifact , which was shut down last month , and Medium. The company’s co-founder and head of AI Tyler Weitzman said that it plans to release a public API of its text-to-speech solutions for more business-related partnerships.

Apart from developing support for external reading sources, the company has made a redesigned explore page to put its own content in areas like productivity, self-improvement and learning differences. This content is in a format akin to Instagram Stories.

speechify text to speech

The company said it observed that once users listen to around 500 words on Speechify, they are likely to love the service. With the preloaded content, the company wants to give users a head start. The startup noted that it wants to bring more content to the app. It notably allows users to read content on different websites through an in-app browser. Plus, it has a separate audiobook business vertical .

Speechify has different types of competitors in the space. For instance, read later app Pocket , which is owned by Mozilla, has an in-app text-to-speech feature. Last year, The New York Times launched its own audio app based on the Audm product it acquired in 2020. Speechify wants to stand out in this market and wants to become a one-stop shop for anyone thinking about reading experiences by offering all kinds of integrations.

If you’ve been searching around anything around text-to-speech or TTS technology, then you’ll most likely have heard of Speechify. You may also wonder what makes speechify different from other text-to-speech programs or perhaps how it works.

We’ll be covering all of these questions within this article.

What is Speechify?

Speechify is a text-to-speech application that allows users to listen to written content in an auditory format. It uses advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to generate speech from text, converting written content into spoken words in real time.

The application can be used to listen to a wide range of content, including books, articles, and documents, and it provides a range of different languages, voices, and reading speeds to choose from.

Speechify is designed to help individuals who find reading difficult or who prefer to listen to content while they are on the go, such as while commuting or working out. It is also useful for people with visual impairments or other conditions that make reading text difficult.

speechify text to speech

What makes Speechify different from other text-to-speech applications?

To put it simply, Speechify is a text reader application that’s main function is to read text from documents, web browsers, e-mails, etc.

This makes it very different from other TTS AI voice generators such as FakeYou , Uberduck or even Typecast .

The program itself is designed to help people who have reading handicaps or need assistance with reading. The program acts like a personal assistant who reads all the text for you. This is perfect if you prefer to listen, rather than read your favorite stories or news articles.

The benefit of Speechify is that you can turn almost any written text document into an audiobook or an audio story, making it very handy and useful for almost anyone.

However, one of the big differences between Speechify and other text to speech applications like Typecast or Murf, is that it lacks the capability to utilize emotional speech.

Typecast is an AI voice website that also utilizes text to speech technology, but the difference is in its capability to manipulate the emotional ranges of the speech. This means that the user can change the pitch, tone, pronunciation, and timbre of the voice, a function that Speechify currently lacks.

Typecast also has the capability to produce dialogue with multiple voice actors, making the conversion sound much more realistic, whereas Speechify only allows you to choose one voice reader at a time to read your text documents.

The big difference between Speechify and other text-to-speech applications would lie in its utility and use case. While Speechify is a great text-reading application to help users read a novel or article, it has limited options for creatives who want to produce original content.

Typecast vs Speechify: Which is better for you?

Typecast and Speechify are both text-to-speech (TTS) applications that use artificial intelligence to convert written content into speech. However, they differ in their approach to generating speech and the features they offer.

Typecast is a TTS application that is designed primarily for content creators such as YouTubers or Podcasters. Typecast offers a range of different voices and languages to choose from, and it allows users to customize the pitch, speed, and tone of the generated speech.

Typecast also offers the ability to export the generated audio in a variety of different formats, making it easy to incorporate into a wide range of media projects.

Speechify, on the other hand, is a TTS application that is designed primarily for individuals who have difficulty reading or who prefer to listen to written content instead. The application offers a range of different voices and languages to choose from, and it allows users to adjust the reading speed and volume of the generated speech.

Speechify can be used to read out a wide range of content, including books, articles, and documents, and it offers features such as text highlighting and the ability to save and share audio files.

While both Typecast and Speechify use AI to generate speech from text, the primary difference between the two is their target audience and intended use cases.

Typecast is designed for content creators who need a high degree of control over the generated speech, while Speechify is designed for individuals who need a reliable and easy-to-use TTS application for personal use.

How to use Speechify?

The application is typically accessible through a web browser or a mobile app and can be used on a variety of devices, including computers, smartphones, and tablets.

Speechify also includes a Chrome extension which makes it very handy to utilize. It can read google documents, e-mails, Wikipedia pages, or any website article for you.

Step 1: Go to Web App

Upon visiting the Speechify website, you can click on ‘Go to Web App’  at the top right corner and you’ll be brought to the main interface.

speechify homepage

Step 2: Select a Document

You can click on the ‘New’ button which will then open up a list of platforms where you can retrieve your desired document. Alternatively, you can just drop the file directly to have the app read it for you.

speechify in-app interface

Step 3: Choose a Voice

Once your document has been uploaded, you may select a voice to read your document. You may control the speed at which the voice reads your document.

speechify voice selection

Step 4: Get the Chrome app

If you want to use TTS to read written text files on your browser, you can download the chrome extension. The chrome extension is a very nifty tool that allows you to read through Youtube comments, Wikipedia pages, and more.

All in all, Speechify is a very handy tool for those who want to utilize text to speech to help them read content that they would otherwise have difficulty reading by themselves if suffering from visual impairments such as Dyslexia.

speechify chrome extension

What are the best Speechify alternatives?

While Speechify has quite a lot of uses, there are other alternatives that are quite similar to it.

Natural Reader

Natural reader is another text-to-speech application that has similar capabilities to Speechify. They’re both text readers which use AI voices to read computer files and documents. Another nifty tool that pretty much competes with Speechify in use case and customer audience.

Another cool online text-to-speech voice reader worth taking a look at would be TTS Reader. This application is in the same alley as Natural Reader and Speechify. It also includes a chrome extension that directly competes with Speechify’s chrome extension.

What is the best speechify alternative to content creation?

Typecast is the best text-to-speech application to use when it comes to creating your content. Whether building a professional presentation or creating a story on Youtube, Typecast has all the tools necessary to help you utilize AI-powered voice actors to make creative content that you could share on your personal or business social media channels.

typecast emotional editor

Typecast’s voice editing tools can help you deliver your written text to speech content in the best way possible. You’re free to customize your script in the way you want it to sound.

You won’t need to purchase expensive voice recording microphones or software when you have Typecast to do all of that for you.

typecast file download

Once you’ve completed editing your document, you can export the file as an audio file or direct it to video.

Overall, using Speechify is a tool worth checking out for those who want to utilize text-to-speech to do the heavy reading for them, whereas TTS tools like Typecast are much better to create content. It would be a great idea to try out both and see which one would better suit your need.
