How to write a strong statement of purpose for postgraduate study

Your statement of purpose is one of the most important supporting documents for the success of your application when applying for a postgraduate course – so it’s important to get it right.

Here are some tips to guide you on how to write a strong statement of purpose (also often known as a personal statement). This can help ensure you put your best application forward and increase your chances of success when applying for a postgraduate course :

Start with a strong opening

Your statement of purpose is your opportunity to speak directly to the admissions team of your chosen course .

Start strongly on a confident note and use this opportunity to clearly communicate to the admissions team your passion for your chosen subject and field. You can do this by providing a short and succinct introduction on your academic and professional background and what you’re passionate about, and why that passion has motivated you to apply for your chosen course.

Showcase your strengths

Along with your enthusiasm for your chosen subject and field, it’s important to showcase to the admissions panel how your strengths, qualities and experience would make you an excellent candidate for the course you’re applying for.

List any relevant projects you’ve worked on that sparked your passion, as well as any personal traits that would make you an ideal candidate for your chosen course, such as excellent self-discipline, time-management and organisational skills.

Highlight what makes you stand out

Your statement of purpose is your best opportunity to really ‘sell’ yourself to the admissions panel.

While your other supporting documents – such as your CV and degree transcript – provide the panel with proof of your academic qualifications and professional experience, they don’t convey you as a person, or your passion for a particular subject area.

Use this opportunity to tell the admissions panel about yourself. What makes you stand out as a course applicant? How do you believe studying the course will help you in your future career ? Your career ambitions should make up a substantial part of your personal statement, so be sure to highlight these clearly.

Keep it concise and to the point

Your statement of purpose should typically be no more than 1 page of A4 paper, or around 500-600 words.

Use your word count wisely – get to the point and clearly demonstrate to the admissions panel why you’d like to join the course.

The key points you’ll want to include in your statement of purpose will typically be:

Why you’re interested in the course and how it fits in with your career goals

Your qualifications and work experience and how they’re relevant to the course

Why you’d like to study with your chosen institution

Anything else you’d like to let the admissions panel know about yourself that makes you stand out as a great candidate for the course you’re applying for

Proofread, edit and get feedback

It’s important to get started with preparing your statement of purpose well in advance of the course application deadline , so that you have enough time to proofread, edit and get feedback on it.

Once you’ve completed your statement of purpose, run the document through a spell checker and re-read it in its entirety at least once more to see if there are any edits you need to make.

It’s also a good idea to let a friend, colleague or manager review your statement of purpose and get their feedback before you send it through to your chosen institution. Your peers may be able to provide you with valuable feedback on how you can further improve your statement of purpose. They may also spot any spelling or grammatical errors you may have missed.

Insider advice

Find out about additional awards and scholarships:

Queen Mary University of London is known for its inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility to higher education. As a result, it offers many awards, bursaries and scholarships to help talented students achieve places on its courses.

One example of these awards is QMUL’s Outstanding Potential Award (OPA) , which is offered to selected students on a case by case basis who show great academic potential. The OPA can allow promising students to receive a lower grade offer than the standard entry requirements. If you’re selected as a candidate for this award during the university application process, you will be invited to attend an interview and, if you perform well, your conditional offer will be revised by the university.

It’s always worth checking to find the best offers from the top universities that are most well-suited to you. Whether you’re a UK or international student, our A level tutors and IB tutors can advise you on the best courses to suit your grades and help you reach the grades required for entry. More than 95% of our applicants receive offers from their first or second choice university, so if you’re looking to maximise your chances of an offer from QMUL, reach out to our team today.

Demonstrate cultural awareness:

QMUL’s focus on diversity, widening access and inclusivity, attracts many UK and international students from across the world. QMUL embrace their cultural diversity. Demonstrate that you align with their ethos and campus by showing cultural awareness and understanding.

If you’re an international student, it could be worth talking about how your background has made you a good fit for this international university.

7 tips for getting into QMUL

1. do you actually know your specific requirements.

The entry requirements for courses at QMUL differ greatly between courses – not just in terms of grades, but also the specific subjects required. For example, Economics and Finance courses not only require applicants to achieve AAA at A-level, but one of these A-levels must be in Mathematics (or Pure Maths).

Some competitive courses, including Medicine, Dentistry and Law, also require applicants to study specific subject combinations (for example, Biology or Chemistry, and a second science or Maths for Medicine) as well as achieve A*AA overall. If you want to go to QMUL, our advisors can help you work out what your already banked or predicted grades can get you. For example, if you want to study Law but don’t have or can’t make A*AA, Business with Law is a lower AAA requirement.

It’s also important to check for admissions tests that are required for your course. For example, QMUL does not require the LNAT for Law, however it does require the UCAT for both Medicine and Dentistry, which you’ll need to register and prepare for in advance.

For Medicine, QMUL will also invite you to an interview as part of the admission process. If you need help preparing for your admissions test or interview at QMUL, the Profs’ admissions consultancy is the perfect way to level up your knowledge, grow confidence in your abilities, and give yourself the best chance of success.

2. How to actually go beyond your school syllabus

When it comes to writing your personal statement , ensuring that you show a genuinely passionate and in-depth understanding of your subject goes a long way. Queen Mary University values extracurricular activities as well as good grades, so it’s important that you don’t just limit yourself to school study. Subject and industry-specific knowledge can be gained by going beyond the school syllabus and reading widely and/or gaining real-world experience.

If you want to get into top universities such as QMUL, it’s best to start expanding your reading list and furthering your passions early on. Not only will it work wonders for your personal statement, but it will also help you get ahead with your independent study skills in preparation for university-level study, which is a significant step up from school-level. Reach out to our team of tutors today who can help you start preparing ahead of time.

Note that work experience and wider reading are particularly important in an interview, where your knowledge and motivations will be put to the test. Queen Mary University of London holds traditional panel interviews for its Medicine degree course, which involve being interviewed by multiple experts from the department, so brushing up on your subject knowledge will ensure that you can have insightful conversations and give thoughtful, informed answers to your interviewers’ questions.

Insider tip 1: Don’t forget to research QMUL itself! Show interest in Queen Mary’s research strengths: Queen Mary University is renowned for its research excellence in various fields. Familiarise yourself with the university’s research strengths and mention any specific areas of research that align with your academic interests in your application. Highlight how you hope to contribute to and benefit from the university’s research community. Know your department especially, including any relevant research they’re conducting or achievements they’ve collected. Mentioning this will prove your genuine enthusiasm for your discipline at QMUL.

Insider tip 2: Take the time to explore Queen Mary’s campus virtually or, if possible, visit open days/events in person. Familiarise yourself with the facilities, libraries, and resources available to students. Mention specific aspects of the campus or facilities that appeal to you and how they will contribute to your academic journey. Take note of any unique features or initiatives mentioned during these events and incorporate them into your application.

Read our guide to preparing for a Medicine interview for more tips or get in touch with our expert medical admissions team for more specialist support.

3. You’ve mentioned a solid 5-year plan, right?

Getting into QMUL is a great goal to have, but it’s also important to think about the long-term plan. Consider how a degree in your chosen subject from QMUL in particular will help you to achieve your future academic or career goals. For example, you may want to go on to study a Master’s or PhD , follow a specific career path, or land a graduate job at your dream company.

Queen Mary University of London values driven and ambitious students. They boast 90% of their graduates are in work or further study within fifteen months of graduating (Graduate Outcome Survey, 2022). QMUL’s Careers and Enterprise team support their students for two years after graduation and help them get the edge they need in today’s job market. QMUL provide workshops and guidance to help graduates apply effectively for work experience and graduate jobs. Consequently, QMUL take pride in their high student employability and want to maintain it. So, mention your career aspirations in your application and be specific. If QMUL are confident that you are ambitious, career-driven and likely to get a good job after graduating, it will boost your application!

Check out QMUL’s great careers page . It also offers useful tips on how to showcase your skills and experience effectively. You can also find career inspiration on each subject page, such as for Mathematics, where there is a list of common career paths (such as Finance, Accounting, Engineering, and Management) and companies (including J.P Morgan, Bank of England, PWC, and more) that QMUL graduates move on to.

For more support on coming up with a career plan and making the most of this in your application, get in touch with our team.

Insider tip: Queen Mary University has strong connections to various industries and actively promotes employability. Research and mention any industry partnerships, guest lectures, or career development opportunities facilitated by the university. Demonstrate how these connections and opportunities will enhance your learning experience and future career prospects. Using QMUL’s own resources and having your own career goals in mind will help you enhance your personal statement and prove to QMUL that you are motivated and committed to your academic future.

4. Invest in your personal statement!

For many of QMUL’s competitive courses, lots of applicants will achieve the grades required for entry. For these courses, personal statements are a crucial factor in deciding who to offer places to, so it’s really important to invest plenty of time into preparing and writing your personal statement .

Use your personal statement as a chance to express what makes you unique. Describe your academic and career ambitions, detail your skills and experience, and explain why you would be an excellent candidate for your chosen course. QMUL particularly looks for students who have a clear passion for their subject area that extends beyond the bounds of the school curriculum. This can include anything from wider reading to extracurricular activities at school and work experience.

The Profs’ experienced personal statement tutors can provide further guidance on how you can write a stand-out statement that enhances your QMUL application.

Insider tip 1: QMUL prides itself on their prioritisation of social justice and improving lives. Consequently, you should include a clear mission statement in your application. What’s your positive social mission? What are your values and what is your personal idea of success? If QMUL loves your mission statement, they won’t want to turn you down e.g. QMUL might feel they’re contradicting their ethos to reject a Medicine student who dreams of one day opening a free healthcare clinic in Costa Rica.

Insider tip 2: A good referee is important. Obviously, you want them to speak highly of you, but ideally, they will highlight your skills and qualities that are relevant to your chosen degree. For this reason, as well as for the general impression of your application, it is best to choose a referee who teaches your chosen subject or within your discipline. It is also a good idea to choose a referee who knows you well enough to write you something of quality. On this note: connect with Queen Mary alumni. Reach out to Queen Mary alumni through networking platforms or alumni associations. Seek advice and insights into the application process, student life, and career opportunities. Their firsthand experiences and perspectives can provide valuable information and guidance for your application.

Note that all students applying to university for 2023, 2024 or 2025 will still be required to submit a UCAS personal statement as normal. However, from January 2025 onwards (October 2024, for Oxbridge applicants), there will be changes to the UCAS application process and students will no longer be required to write a personal statement. Instead, all applicants will answer a series of shorter, more tailored questions provided by UCAS.

5. Lay the ‘groundwork’ for Acceptance

To help further prove your commitment to these long-term goals and make your application stand out from the thousands of other Queen Mary applicants, you should look to gain relevant work experience in your field. Whether paid or unpaid, having experience working in your desired field will provide you with invaluable real-world insights that you can use throughout your application.

Queen Mary University values practical experience and encourages applicants to showcase relevant work experience, internships, or industry placements. Highlight how these experiences have contributed to your academic and personal development, and how they align with your chosen course at Queen Mary University.

Similarly, don’t underestimate the power of extracurriculars. They can prove you are committed to your subject and passionate about it outside of academia, and shape you as a candidate. You can also show you have the characteristics that QMUL values through your extracurricular activities.

6. Don’t trip on your admissions test

If you’re required to take an admissions test, it should not be neglected. Your A level grades are not more important than your admissions test score. Those who study hard for both have a better chance of getting in!

Some courses at Queen Mary University may require applicants to take admissions tests, such as the UK Clinical Aptitude Test ( UCAT ), Biomedical Admissions Test ( BMAT ), or Mathematics Admissions Test ( MAT ).

Familiarise yourself with the specific test requirements for your chosen programme and allocate sufficient time to prepare and practice for these tests. Utilise available resources, including sample questions and practice tests, to enhance your performance.

7. Remember the purpose of your interview

Certain courses at Queen Mary University may involve interviews as part of the selection process. For example, Medicine applicants are interviewed. If your chosen programme requires an interview, familiarise yourself with the format and expectations.

Research common interview questions related to your field of study and prepare thoughtful responses. Practise mock interviews to improve your confidence and communication skills.

Additionally, be prepared to discuss any relevant experiences, academic projects, or personal qualities that make you a suitable candidate for the course.

ESSENTIAL QUICK READ: Application Supporting Statements

A blank space for you to complete a "Supporting Statement" is a common feature of many application forms, both online and on paper.

Unlike the other sections of the form though, where you might need to complete grids with your academic qualifications and previous work experience, the supporting statement is often an open space for you to use as you wish.

Equally, if you are applying using a resume or a CV you would be expected to also provide a supporting statement in the form of a covering letter or email.  But how can you produce a statement which is going to give your application the edge over the competition?

Here are some top tips to make your application as good as it can be.

Structure matters  For many applicants, the blank page of the supporting statement is their least favourite part of the application! Many applicants are unsure how to complete this task effectively and persuasively.

Whilst some applicants appreciate the ‘blank space’ which they can use as they would like, many are unsure how to structure their points. For this reason, it can be helpful to consider what the purpose is of the supporting statement. How are the recruiters going to use this section of your application, alongside all the other parts of the application form or alongside your CV?

It can be useful to imagine that the recruiters are using your application to answer four underlying key questions and that you can use your supporting statement, or covering letter, to provide them with the right answers, backed by evidence to those questions. See the grid below for a useful structure you can use in your supporting statements:

Recruiters’ underlying key questionsYour answers through your supporting statement
Can you do the job? Your knowledge, skills, experience.
How will you do the job? Your approach, your attitude, your competencies.
Do you really want the job? Your understanding of the job, your experience and research into the role and the professional sector.
Do you really want to work for this organisation? Your understanding of the organisation, your research into their current performance and future plans

Follow instructions carefully Attention to detail matters in practically every job, so make sure you read the instructions on the application form with great care. It might be that the employer has given you an indication of how they would prefer you to structure you supporting statement, such as by emphasising relevant experience and qualifications, followed by any additional work experience. In that instance, you can use that guide to help you, whilst making sure that you don’t forget to emphasise your motivation. Emphasise your enthusiasm Whilst your enthusiasm for the job, organisation or sector might be obvious to you, it is absolutely vital than you convey that successfully to the recruiter. The supporting statement, or indeed covering letter, is a valuable opportunity to showcase your genuine enthusiasm for this job. The more you are able to evidence your enthusiasm, by relating to relevant experiences or targeted research that you have undertaken, the more reassured the recruiter will be that you are the right person to hire. Just saying that you are passionate is not enough, you need to prove it. Highlight key parts of your CV Applicants are often wary of simply repeating their CV, or other parts of their application form, in their supporting statement. However, whilst it’s important to not simply ‘cut and paste’ sections from elsewhere, it is perfectly understandable, and expected, that you will naturally refer back to your experiences, qualifications and skills, which you will have listed elsewhere. It can be helpful to think of the supporting statement, or covering letter, as an opportunity to shine a light on what you regard is the most relevant parts of your CV. Focus on their role and organisation An easy way to make a recruiter lose interest in your supporting statement, or indeed your application in general, is to make them feel that you just want a job, any job! Employers spend time (and money) assessing what skills they need within their business and translating those skills needs into vacancies. It’s now your responsibility to convince them that you not only have those specific skills but that you want to apply them in this specific role within this specific organisation. If your supporting statement can be used for more than one role, or more than one business, then you need to make more of an effort to really tailor it to the specific opportunity, by mentioning specific names and some research you’ve done regarding the job or the business, for example. Triple check for mistakes Check, check and then check again for any spelling or grammatical errors in your personal statement or covering letter. Such mistakes can be fatal for an application, as they can be interpreted as carelessness, which is unlikely to be one of the qualities that the recruiter is looking for.

Use  QM CV Builder  to create your CV from scratch using templates, or to get instant on a CV you have already drafted. You can also browse our  CV and application guides online , and  book an appointment with an Application Adviser  when you are ready to apply for a specific opportunity.

Years 1 to 2

In the first two years, students will not go on clinical placement, however, they will learn about different body systems in 5 compulsory modules and choose 3 elective components (known as SSCs: student-selected components) about topics that they are interested in.

Years 3 to 4

Students begin going on a series of clinical placements at the associate teaching hospitals listed below. They still regularly attend classes at medical school to reinforce this practical experience.

The focus of this year is to prepare students for Foundation Year, the first year of being a doctor. So, students will shadow a current Foundation Year doctor, complete their SSC programme, go on community placements and regularly consolidate their learning in medical school with simulated patient scenarios

In May 2022, the most widespread outbreak of sustained transmission of mpox outside of countries historically affected countries in Western and Central Africa occurred. We aimed to examine the personal and clinical experiences of international healthcare workers (HCWs) during this public health emergency. We conducted an international cross-sectional survey study between August and October 2022, examining the experiences and perceptions of HCWs clinically involved with the 2022 mpox response. Respondents were recruited via an international network of sexual health and HIV clinicians responding to mpox and promoted through clinical associations and social media. Survey domains included: clinical workload; preparedness; training and support at work; psychological well-being and vaccination. 725 multi-national healthcare workers across 41 countries were included in the analysis. 91% were physicians specialised in Sexual Health or Infectious Diseases; with 34% (n=247) of all respondents involved in mpox policy. A substantial proportion of respondents (n=296, 41%) reported working longer hours during the mpox outbreak, with no concomitant removal of other clinical responsibilities. 30% (n=218) of respondents reported that they had never heard of mpox before the outbreak and over 25% of the respondents reported that they had misdiagnosed someone initially. This culminated in a high prevalence of moral distress at 30%. Less than 9% of HCWs in the region of the Caribbean, Central America and South America had been offered a vaccine as compared to almost 1/3 in the other regions. Where offered, there were high levels of uptake across all regions. Our findings highlight a critical need for addressing the profound gaps in HCW knowledge about re-emerging diseases with pandemic potential. Strengthening the resilience of global health systems and prioritising internationally coordinated approaches to global vaccine deployment is imperative.
