Candidates are required to download the Ph.D. admission form from the university website (click here) and submit it completely filled in all respects with copies of all the documents. Shortlisted candidates will be called for written examination and interview. They will be required to pay a Registration-cum-Processing fee of INR 5000 (Refundable).

Admission to Ph.D. in English programme will be based on the overall performance in Post Graduate degree, Entrance Examination, Personal Interview and positions available. Preference will be given to CSIR/UGC NET qualified candidates and those having sponsored projects.

Selection Process

WRITTEN ENTRANCE EXAMINATION It will broadly test the research aptitude and ability to comprehend. Candidates with NET, GATE, M Phil. or equivalent qualifications may be exempted from the entrance examination.

The Doctoral degree in English is one of the strong programmes currently being run by the Department. Ever since the programme was introduced in the year 1964, the Department has continued to insist on maintaining extreme rigor and high standards in its research scholars: from the time that scholars are admitted to the programme through the period of research to the time of completion of the project and the process of evaluation. As a result, among those who have obtained their PhD degrees from the Department, several have gone on to make a significant mark in diverse fields at national and international level.

Over the years, in response to global shifts, the thrust areas of doctoral research at the Department have both shifted and evolved. Earlier the Department used to promote researches in canonical areas. Since the archival resources for such researches were located in England and America, the prospective doctoral scholars were encouraged to go abroad to conduct their research. However, with growing archival material available online, this too has altered. In addition, the Department has also taken cognizance of newer areas such as researches across the media, post-colonial studies and Literature in English, Translation Studies and Cultural Studies with their interdisciplinary orientation, and research in these areas are being encouraged. Consequently, we at the Department have opened our Doctoral programme to newer areas and methodologies and welcome a greater numbers of research scholars from India and abroad.

We have also begun encouraging relatively younger scholars to get enrolled as doctoral students. An indication of the last mentioned shift is the recent restructuring of both the M.Phil and PhD programmes. An M.Phil student can now directly enroll in our PhD programme before completing his/her M.Phil in the first semester provided he/she meets the eligibility criteria laid down (please see guidelines for M.Phil Ordinance, VI-A).

Chhattisgarh has its own historical background, in which Chhattisgarhi literature has been confined for a hundred years. The development of Chhattisgarhi folk literature has been created by the beliefs, culture and civilizations of Chhattisgarhi folk. Literary works composed in Chhattisgarhi language had started about a thousand years ago, but there was not enough literature created at that time, yet Chhattisgarhi Literary Tours literary works composed in different times are available. "This one thousand years literary journey is divided into three classes based on different eras. 1: - 1. Saga era: from 1000 to 1500 AD 2. Bhakti era: from 1500 to 1900 AD 3. Modern era: 1900 to date

छत्तीसगढ़ की अपनी ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि है, जिसमें छत्तीसगढ़ी साहित्य को सौ वर्षों तक सीमित कर दिया गया है। छत्तीसगढ़ी लोक-साहित्य का विकास छत्तीसगढ़ी लोक की मान्यताओं, संस्कृति तथा उसकी सभ्यताओं से निर्मित हुआ है। छत्तीसगढ़ी भाषा में रचित साहित्यिक रचनाओं का आरंभ लगभग एक हजार वर्ष पूर्व हो चुका था, लेकिन उस समय पर्याप्त मात्रा में साहित्य-सृजन नहीं हुआ था फिर भी छत्तीसगढ़ी साहित्यिक-यात्रा विभिन्न कालों में रचित साहित्यिक रचनाएँ उपलब्ध हैं। ‘‘इस एक हजार वर्षों के साहित्यिक यात्रा को विभिन्न युगों के आधार पर तीन वर्गों में विभाजित किया गया है1:- 1. गाथा युग: 1000 से 1500 ई. तक 2. भक्ति युग: 1500 से 1900 ई. तक 3. आधुनिक युग: सन् 1900 से आज तक

If a student already holds a Doctors degree in a relevant subject from a UGC Approved University or Institute, he/she may be exempted from entrance exam and pre Ph.D. coursework. After clearing the both steps the student will be eligible to pay course fee or registration fee. Only the predetermined number of candidates may be admitted to Ph.D. programme.

Q.1 - What is the procedure for Ph.D.? Admission to the University?

ANSWER : - The Ph.D. and M.Phil. programs of prestigious Universities are conducted and guided strictly as per the provisions and regulations dictated by the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D./M.Phil. Degrees) (1st Amendment) Regulations, 2018 and subsequent amendments. The entire procedure for admission to the research programs encompasses a Research Entrance Exam (RET) and then an Interview/Viva Voce. The performance of a candidate in the RET is given 70% weightage, and the remaining 30% weightage is given to his/her performance at the Interview.

Q.2 - What are the modes of pursuing M.Phil. & Ph.D. programs at the University?

ANSWER : -Both the full-time and part-time modes are available at University for pursuing its Ph.D. programs and only the full-time mode is available for M.Phil. program in the desired subjects/fields. These highly-qualitative and prolific research programs are available in a rather broad range of fields/subjects. At University, the minimum time duration of the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs is 1.5 Years and 3 Years, respectively, in general.

Q.3 - Are the Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degrees granted by any University valid abroad?

ANSWER : -Yes, of course. If the University is properly recognized under section 2(f) of the UGC Act of 1956 and is a prestigious member of the AIU (the Association of Indian Universities). It is an M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees granted in various fields/subjects are duly valid across India and the world.

Q.4 - What are the main eligibility criteria for participating in the University Research Entrance Exam (RET)?

ANSWER : -The following are the main eligibility conditions for participating in the RET: - A rigorous Master’s Degree in the proposed subject/field obtained from any recognized university/institution located in India or abroad, with a minimum 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Differently-abled categories are given a 5% relaxation in respect of this eligibility criterion. Candidates with an M.Phil. degree in the proposed field/subject, or have qualified for the UGC (JRF) Examinations/ NET/ SET/ SELT, etc., will be allowed to appear directly for the interview, without appearing in the RET. Impressive academic records, and any prior experience in research work, will be given additional advantages.

Q.5 - What relaxations are granted to the reserved categories for Ph.D.? Admission to the University?

ANSWER : - Candidates belonging to the categories of SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, and so on, are given all relaxations prescribed by the Govt. of India and the UGC. These relaxations are provided in form of 5% reduced marks for them at post-graduation, and also in the minimum qualifying marks at RET. Thus, candidates belonging to these categories only need to score a minimum of 45% marks at RET, to qualify for the final interview.

Q.6 - How will be the pattern of RET?

ANSWER : - The syllabus or pattern of RET consists of subject-specific matters, research methodology, and aptitude (covering logical reasoning, numerical ability, analytical reasoning, statistics, etc.).Thus, RET will contain a total of 70 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

Q.7 - Are M.Phil. Holders/UGC- NET (including JRF)/ UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/ GATE exempted from appearing at RET?

ANSWER : - Yes. The holders of M.Phil. degrees in their respective fields/subjects are made exempt from appearing in RET. The same is the situation in cases of aspiring candidates who have qualified exams like UGC-NET (including JRF)/ UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/ GATE, etc.

Q.8 - How is the application fee paid?

ANSWER : - The Application Fee (i.e. the fee for getting participated in RET) can be paid online or offline, like the Application Form. Payment Modes: DD (in Favor of the University) / NEFT/ Cash Deposit.

Q.9 - Do working candidates require to obtain NOC from employers for pursuing research at any University?

ANSWER : - Yes, necessarily. Working Professionals who are interested in research at any University are required to obtain the NOC (No Objection Certificate) from their respective employers, in order to avert any intrusion ever during the entire doctoral course.

Q.10 - Does an M.Phil. holder require to undergo Ph.D. coursework?

ANSWER : - Yes. M.Phil. holders are again required to undergo the coursework in Ph.D. at some Universities. However, their prior knowledge in the field/subject will be very supportive to them for learning and performing efficiently during the Ph.D. program.

Q.11 - Can I pay the yearly program/course fee in installments?

ANSWER : - Yes, you can pay the yearly course fee as many as in two installments, but well within the yearly session.

Q.12 - Does Any University provide any scholarship or stipend to pursuing scholars?

ANSWER : - Yes, of course. Many Universities offer scholarships as well as stipends to meritorious and talented candidates who undertake research studies at the University. Scholarships are granted to those candidates who come under the top 21 by scoring higher marks in RET and interviews. And, stipends are provided to those scholars who also give lectures to UG or PG students at the University, in addition to doing their Ph.D. coursework. The amount of the monthly stipend will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and capabilities and may go up to Rs. 20,000.

ANSWER : - All necessary and constructive resources, amenities, and facilities are offered by well-established and prestigious universities to research scholars in various streams/subjects. The English Department seeks to teach and promote an understanding of both the significance and the history of British and American literature (broadly defined) and to foster an appreciation of the richness and variety of texts in the language. It offers rigorous training in interpretive thinking and precise expression. Our English graduate program features the study of what imaginative language, rhetoric, and narrative art has done, can do, and will do in life, and it focuses on the roles creative writing and representations play in almost every aspect of modern experience. Completing the Ph.D. program prepares a student for full participation as a scholar and literary critic in the profession.

Financial Support

We offer an identical five-year funding package to all admitted students with competitive funding available for a sixth year. Funding covers applicable tuition costs, Stanford Cardinal Care health insurance, and living expenses in the form of direct stipend, teaching assistantships or pre-doctoral research assistantships. The department, in conjunction with the School of Humanities and Sciences, is also committed to supporting students' involvement in professional activities and funds many of the expenses for research travel, summer language study, and participation in academic conferences. Student housing is not included in the funding package.

In addition to our standard doctoral funding package, the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE) provides competitive funding to support individual doctoral students, student groups, and department-based projects. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program cultivates and supports a highly-engaged, multidisciplinary and multicultural community of graduate students from across Stanford University, and delivers a diverse collection of educational experiences, preparing graduates to address complex challenges facing the world. Knight-Hennessy Scholars participate in an experiential leadership development program known as the King Global Leadership Program and receive funding for up to three years of graduate study at Stanford. Teaching Requirements

One pedagogical seminar and four quarters of supervised teaching. Typically a student will teach three times as a teaching assistant in a literature course. For the fourth course, students will have the option of applying to design and teach a Writing Intensive Seminar in English (WISE) for undergraduate English majors or teaching a fourth quarter as a T.A..

1st year: One quarter as T.A. (leading 1-2 discussion sections of undergraduate literature)
2nd year: One quarter as T.A. (leading 1-2 discussion sections of undergraduate literature)
3rd/4th/5th years: Two quarters of teaching, including the possibility of TA'ing or teaching a WISE course.

Language requirements

All candidates for the Ph.D. degree must demonstrate a reading knowledge of two foreign languages. One language requirement must be completed during the first year of study. The second language must be completed before the oral examination in the third year.

Candidates in the earlier periods must offer Latin and one of the following languages: French, German, Greek, Italian or Spanish. Candidates in the later period (that is, after the Renaissance) must demonstrate a reading knowledge of two languages for which Stanford’s Language Center regularly offers a reading course, administers a competency exam, or facilitates the administration of an American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Reading Proficiency Test (ACTFL RPT). In all cases, the choice of languages offered must be relevant to the student’s field of study and must have the approval of the candidate's adviser. Any substitution of a language other than one for which Stanford offers a competency exam must also be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.

Other requirements

All candidates for the Ph.D. must satisfactorily complete the following:

135 units, at least 70 of which (normally 14 courses) must be graded course work
Qualifying examination, based on a reading guide of approximately 70-90 works, to be taken orally at the end of the summer after the first year of graduate work.
University oral examination covering the field of concentration taken no later than the winter quarter of the third year of study.
Submission of the dissertation prospectus
First chapter review with the dissertation advisor and the members of the dissertation reading committee.
Dissertation, which should be an original work of literary criticism demonstrating the student's ability to participate fully as a scholar and literary critic in the profession.
Closing colloquium designed to look forward toward the next steps; identify the major accomplishments of the dissertation and the major questions/issues/problems that remain; consider possibilities for revision, book or article publication, etc.

The Department of English offers PhD program in both English literature and linguistics in line with the Higher Education Commission guidelines. These programs offer courses in a vast variety of traditional as well as modern disciplines in English literature and linguistics. Selection in the respective program will be subject to availability of seats, merit based on academic qualification, valid GRE International / NTS / NUML devised GAT- subject score and interview. c. Applicants with valid GRE International/GAT-Subject from NTS will have to pass written/subjective portion of NUML GAT-S (as per schedule of respective Faculties) to secure admission. d. Candidate qualified for interview will have to submit and present a Statement of Purpose1500-2000 words (inclusive of title of research, intended field, potential research and passion for area of research) for PhD studies at the time of interview. e. For Management Sciences only : Candidates who have completed 30 credit hours of coursework in the case of professional degrees at the master's level, such as MBA and MS in Project Management are also eligible. However, preference will be given to those who have MS Degree with research at Level-7.

These entry requirements are for the 2024/25 academic year and requirements for future academic years may differ. Entry requirements for the 2025/26 academic year will be published on 1 Oct 2024.

A UK masters, or its international equivalent, with a mark of at least 65% in your English literature dissertation of at least 10,000 words.

If your masters programme did not include a dissertation or included a dissertation that was unmarked or less than 10,000 words, you will be expected to produce an exceptional research proposal and personal statement to show your ability to undertake research at the level required by this programme.

TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 100 with at least 23 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
C1 Advanced ( CAE ) / C2 Proficiency ( CPE ): total 185 with at least 176 in each component.
Trinity ISE : ISE III with passes in all four components.
PTE Academic: total 70 with at least 62 in each component.

Your English language qualification must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the programme you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS , TOEFL, Trinity ISE or PTE , in which case it must be no more than two years old.

Step 1 - Signup

Sign up or Register for CUCET with basic details (Name, Email ID, Mobile No., State, Gender and Password). Your Email ID will act as your Username for the portal while the password will be set by you upon registration.

On successful registration, you will receive the confirmation message on your registered contact number and Email. Use the Username and Password to Login to your CUCET Account.

Step 2 - Apply

After successfully creating your candidate profile for CUCET, you can proceed with choosing the Date for your examination. Complete your profile by logging into your CUCET account and choose an examination date as per your convenience and preference.

Step 3 - Submit

Program description.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in English offered by the Department of English in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes intensive and comprehensive learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in literature review, critical thinking, and academic writing to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

Keywords: literary studies, theory, and history, cultural studies, drama and theater, gender studies, medieval and early modern studies, Victorian studies, modernism and the twentieth century, decolonization and contemporary cultures, digital humanities.

Unique Program Features

The program brings together three different but related areas of study: Literature, Drama and Theatre, and Cultural Studies;
The Department has major collaborative research projects with the Burney Centre, the McGill Medievalists, the Bibliographic Society of Canada, and research teams on Shakespeare and Performance, Early Modern Conversions, Interacting with Print, Eating in Canada, and Novelists on the Novel;
All applicants are considered for funding.

The PhD programme at the Department of Literature and Languages is designed for individuals who have a strong passion for the English language, literature, and critical analysis. Scholars can delve deep into subjects such as literary theory, literary history, cultural studies, linguistics, composition and rhetoric, and creative writing. The faculty advisors and mentors at the department, with expertise in a plethora of specialisations from Gender Studies to Neuro Linguistic Programming, offer extensive guidance and support in research and scholarly pursuits.

Eligibility

Candidates with a Master’s degree in English or related field (55% marks and above) and a valid UGC-NET or GATE certificate can apply for a direct interview. Other candidates will have to appear for an Entrance Test and Interview.

Highlights of the Programme

PhD Fellowship is for up to four years (Three years and an extension of up to one more year based on performance)
Scholars will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs. 36,000/- per month as JRF for the first two years
Scholars will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs. 41,000/- per month as SRF for the subsequent period (only if the candidate publishes two Research Papers in Q1 / Q2 category of journals in the first two years)
Scolars will be eligible for the Professional Development Grant of Rs 20,000/- (per annum) for the first two years and Rs 30,000/- (per annum) for the subsequent duration to carry out research activities, attend conferences, purchase consumables, etc.

Doctor of Philosophy (English Literature)

The Doctor of Philosophy is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. The pinnacle of academic achievement, the Ph.D, is awarded based on the foundation of the thesis prepared under supervision, resulting in an original and significant contribution, displaying extensive knowledge and comprehension of the subject and field of study.

Students applying for the PhD programme must meet the University’s admission requirements, and should have a relevant MA degree for admission into the PhD programme. The PhD programme is by research only, and students are expected to produce an original thesis of up to 100,000 words in length.

Through our academic staff’s specialization and research interests, our Department offers expertise in a wide variety of literary fields, including Medieval literature, Renaissance literature, 19th century literature, Modernist and Postmodernist literature, Postcolonial literatures (with a strong interest in Malaysian literature), travel literature, ecocriticism, African literature, feminist literature, modern drama, literary theory and more.

We warmly welcome prospective students, both from Malaysia and from abroad, who wish to pursue advanced studies in literature in English.

Course Structure

The programme must be completed within 12 semesters. At the end of the candidate’s study, a thesis not exceeding 100,000 words must be submitted and upon successful defense of the paper, the candidate will be granted Ph.D status. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty. Language Requirement

A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language shall be required:

to obtain a score of 550 for a paper-based total, a score of 213 for a computer-based total or a score of 80 for an internet-based total for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
to obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS);

The Department of English Literary Studies supervises research degrees in a broad range of areas, from Early Modern to contemporary literature and theory. We specialise particularly in writings of and from South Africa and Africa and work closely with prospective students to develop a thesis topic that reflects their interests and allows them to make a substantive and innovative contribution to their research area.

Once accepted, students are assigned one (sometimes two) supervisor(s) who will offer them consistent intellectual support and guidance. In addition students are encouraged to take part in the intellectual life of the department and are given opportunities to attend workshops and seminars as well as teach and present on their own research. On occasion (in keeping with our increasingly interdisciplinary approach) we offer co-supervision with another department.

We appreciate that a PhD is an extremely serious undertaking and as such we read all applications closely and consult with colleagues to ensure that we have adequate supervisory capacity for your project. We encourage all applicants to read our staff’s research profiles in order to gauge the interface between their research interests and the specialisations of our teaching staff.

Many of our graduates have gone on to be leading researchers in their fields, teaching and holding senior management positions at major universities both locally and globally.
