The Centre of African Studies, School of African Studies(SOAS) University of London offers 2 PhDs to African nationals as part of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

About the Award:  The Centre of African Studies at SOAS, University of London, is pleased to announce the extension of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative, funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, for another three years,. The focus of the project remains the same in terms of creating a dedicated environment to support the study of the socio-economic, political, and legal links between governance and development.

  The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has generously provided SOAS with two PhD scholarships every year for African students undertaking a full‐time PhD and Masters programme in the field of Governance for Development in Africa.

Eligibility: 

  • Candidates must be domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country.
  • Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub‐Saharan Africa.

Selection Criteria:  Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a panel consisting of SOAS academic members. The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application.

Number of Awardees:  2

Value of Scholarship: 

  • PhD: The scholarship is on a part‐present form and it provides for fees for three years. However, accommodation and living cost are covered for the first year only.
  • The scholarship will also cover in total 2 return flights : one during the first year, and one for the viva (plus one week’s accommodation around the viva).
  • In year 2 and year 3, the successful candidate will also receive an annual stipend of £5,000.
  • We also cover visa cost, provided receipts are submitted to the Centre of African Studies office.
  • We expect students to be on fieldwork during the second year, and to write the thesis in the third year in their country of origin.

Duration of Scholarship:  3 years

Graduate students in the Research Degrees: Finance and Management PhD programme of the School of Finance and Management study towards the University of London PhD.

To be considered for the PhD programme in finance or management students must already have completed a good Masters degree in a relevant discipline and been awarded high grades. They must also submit an initial research proposal that demonstrates aptitude for academic research.

The full-time PhD programme normally requires three years of study in London.

The School of Finance and Management PhD programme provides supervision in a number of fields within finance and management. We concentrate on topics in fields which are actively being researched by faculty members.

Students in the PhD programme study advanced courses and carry out research for their thesis. They work closely with their supervisor from the School of Finance and Management and also with other faculty members and PhD students.

Graduates from the School of Finance and Management leave SOAS with a coherent and solid knowledge of management and finance, with skills in statistics and computing, critical reasoning and analytical thinking.

We normally require a 2.1 bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) plus a Masters degree in appropriate subject area plus one reference. In exceptional cases we may accept applicants who do not meet these criteria if they show evidence of a strong Masters degree and/or appropriate level of relevant work experience.

Your tuition fees should be paid in full before or during online enrolment at the start of each academic year.

All you need is your 6-digit student ID number and your method of payment.

Student paying their own fees

Online by debit or credit card.

This is the quickest, most efficient way to pay. We can take Visa, Mastercard, Eurocard, Switch, Maestro, Solo and Delta cards. You will need your 6-digit student ID number.

International online card payments (for non-UK bank accounts only)

If you want to pay from a non-UK bank you can use our secure and simple Flywire  website. 

SOAS has partnered with Flywire to offer international payers ways to pay in their local currency. For example, Indian Rupees in India; Euro in Europe etc. Depending on the country of the payer, different payment options will be presented. This includes local currency card payments or bank transfers to an in-country bank. 

Reference:  You'll need to use your 6-digit student ID number to make a payment.

Bank transfer

Bank transfers for both domestic and international banks are possible through our secure and simple Flywire website. Please select the country the payment is to be made from to see the option for bank transfers.

Students who choose not to use Flywire are still able to pay via Bank transfer arranged directly with their banks. Below is the required information for this type of transfer.

(If you’re paying from a non-UK bank make sure you pay in GBP so we get the correct amount. If you pay by bank transfer from a non-UK bank, your bank might charge you extra, so make sure you allow for that.)

Then, to allow us to locate your payment, make sure you email us with your bank’s name, the amount you paid, date of transfer, your name, and your 6-digit student ID number. Send that information to [email protected].

We should receive the payment at least 14 days before enrolment to give us enough time to process it. Either print off the online bank transfer confirmation or ask your bank to give you proof of the transaction for your records (and in case we need to see proof that you paid).

Please do not deposit money at a bank branch directly into the School's account as we won’t be able to trace it.
