Marketing Personal Statement Example

My passion for marketing started at a young age, inspired by the popular TV show Mad Men and its portrayal of the advertising industry. The show sparked my interest in the art of persuasion and the power of effective communication, and I have since been motivated to learn more about the field.

During my high school years at Chew Valley School in Bath, I was the captain of the rugby team, where I developed valuable leadership skills and the ability to work well under pressure. These skills have translated well into my work experience, where I spent two summers at McDonald’s, where I learned how to be task-focused and improve my time management skills.

In terms of academics, I have taken A-Levels in English, Biology, and Chemistry. Although these subjects are not directly related to marketing, they have helped me to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, which I believe will be beneficial in my future marketing career.

My long-term goal is to become a marketing manager and to make a meaningful impact on the industry. I am fascinated by the various aspects of marketing, including market research, branding, advertising, and promotions. I am eager to learn more about these topics and to gain practical experience through internships and real-world projects. I am also interested in writing a marketing book and sharing my knowledge and insights with others who are interested in the field.

In my free time, I enjoy playing rugby and reading books. I am also an avid traveller and have visited several countries, which has broadened my perspective and exposed me to different cultures and marketing strategies. These experiences have further fuelled my interest in marketing and have given me a deeper appreciation for the global impact of the industry.

I believe that a marketing course at a UK university will provide me with the education, skills, and network to pursue my dream career. I am confident that I have the determination and motivation to succeed in the programme, and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Undergraduate Marketing Personal Statement Example

Fueled by my fervour for marketing and backed by my hands-on experience and educational foundation, I am the ideal candidate to soar in this programme.

I first became interested in marketing while reading Seth Godin’s book “Purple Cow”. The book spoke to me on a personal level and helped me understand the importance of creativity and innovation in marketing. I was inspired by Godin’s approach to marketing, which emphasizes the need to stand out and be unique in a crowded market. This resonated with me, and I knew then that I wanted to pursue a career in marketing.

My work experience has also been a significant factor in shaping my interest in marketing. During my time at Cantell School, I worked part-time as a digital marketing coordinator for a secondary school web portal. In this role, I was responsible for creating and executing marketing campaigns, analyzing data, and maintaining a strong online presence for the school. This experience provided me with hands-on experience in the field of marketing and further solidified my interest in the subject.

In addition to my work experience, I have also been highly involved in various extracurricular activities, including playing basketball for my school’s team. I believe that my athletic background has taught me valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which will be useful in my future marketing career. Furthermore, my A-level studies in English, Media, and Finance have given me a strong foundation in the areas of communication, analysis, and finance, which are essential skills in marketing.

My travels around the world during my gap year have also had a profound impact on my interest in marketing. I had the opportunity to meet and interact with many people, including marketing professionals, who shared their experiences and insights into the industry. This has given me a deeper appreciation for the dynamic and ever-changing nature of marketing and has motivated me to pursue a career in this field.

Philip Kotler, another marketing thought leader, has also had a significant impact on my motivation to pursue a career in marketing. I admire his approach to marketing, which emphasizes the importance of understanding customer needs and designing strategies that meet those needs. This has inspired me to approach marketing from a customer-centric perspective and to always prioritize the needs of my target audience.

Ultimately, my goal is to become a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and make a significant impact in the marketing industry. I am confident that with a degree in marketing from your esteemed university, I will be well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve this goal.

I am highly motivated and passionate about pursuing a degree in marketing. I believe that my work experience, academic background, and extracurricular activities make me a strong candidate for your programme. I look forward to the opportunity to further develop my skills and knowledge in marketing at your esteemed university.

Postgraduate Marketing Personal Statement Example

With over three years of working experience in the marketing sector, I believe I have gained the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue advanced studies in the field.

I have been working at Grey International Marketing Agency in London, where I have been involved in a variety of international marketing campaigns for both UK and international brands. This experience has provided me with a unique opportunity to work with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and to understand the complexities of the global market. I have learned the importance of market research, consumer behaviour analysis, and creative branding strategies in developing effective marketing plans.

As a driven and ambitious individual, I am constantly seeking new challenges and opportunities to grow. My interest in digital marketing has led me to specialize in this field, and I am now proficient in social media marketing, search engine optimization, and email marketing. I am also skilled in data analytics and use it to measure the effectiveness of my marketing campaigns and make data-driven decisions.

Additionally, my experience as a basketball player in the Baker Early College team in Oregon, USA, has taught me the importance of teamwork and leadership. These skills are transferable to the marketing sector and have allowed me to work effectively with my colleagues and clients. I have also learned the importance of adaptability and resilience, especially when faced with unexpected challenges and obstacles.

I am confident that the postgraduate marketing course at your university will provide me with the advanced knowledge and practical skills to further my career and achieve my long-term goal of starting my marketing agency. I am particularly drawn to your university’s reputation for academic excellence and its commitment to providing students with real-world experiences. I am eager to learn from the experienced faculty and to engage with my peers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

I am passionate about marketing and believe that this postgraduate course will provide me with the foundation I need to make a significant impact in the industry. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my background and qualifications with you, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Thank you for your consideration.

Example 1 – Digital Marketing Masters Personal Statement

My attention in this topic was piqued while studying marketing for my business degree. The technological revolution has revolutionised how business is conducted. To increase their revenue and sales, they are now trying to promote themselves. The idea of marketing changed how they conducted business and how they thought about it. Learning about it let me realise how this area affects every field. Every firm requires it, despite the fact that there are several types of marketing. Along with informing the public, it also aids in giving the company a defined direction and goal. I became aware of its possibilities as I mostly engaged with digital media. People like me spend much of our time using digital media to watch, learn, work, and communicate. Since they are primarily exposed to it, I thought the marketing sector of digital media was particularly fascinating. Digital marketing is establishing a foothold in industry as one of the newest and most popular forms of marketing.

When I first heard the term “digital marketing,” it sounded complicated. However, when I brought it up with my professors, they thought that was among the most fascinating areas of marketing. Its success hinges on how they portray themselves to those who utilise digital media because that is its target audience. To further my understanding of marketing and digital marketing, I have participated in a number of online conferences and conversations.

I haven’t had any first-hand experience in the marketing industry, but I have held jobs in the past that gave me exposure to it. I made an effort to be as involved as I could be with marketing tactics by observing how businesses approach things. I talked with the owner of the restaurant where I was a part-time employee about some suggestions for bringing in more customers. I’ve given him various concepts, including special days with discounts, making their own meals, etc. The best partner to carry out those concepts, in my opinion, is digital media. Many of my suggestions received consideration and were put into practice. I saw first-hand how powerful marketing tactics can help firms change. Online purchases were once seen as a luxury, but that has changed recently. Digital marketing appears to be the best technique to help firms grow in the new directions that the development has demanded.

I frequently get advice from my sister, a professor at a prestigious university in [location], to keep up with current happenings. And only when you take the initiative does learning occur. I therefore never learnt something just for the purpose of learning; instead, I was always academically oriented. I developed myself both physically and personally outside of the classroom by taking part in talks, seminars, and sports. I’m excited for the challenges I’ll confront while pursuing my education at your respected institution. The time I have there will be put to good use. I intend to build the foundation for a prosperous marketing profession with your master’s in digital marketing programme. The basic goal of marketing is to make individuals aware of everything around them. And I’m going to work in digital marketing in India to accomplish this.

Example 2 – Digital Marketing Masters Personal Statement

Innovation and marketing are essential to business. Otherwise, it won’t evolve. They can take the next step toward generating more revenue by being inventive and having successful marketing techniques. In order to secure the sustainability of the company, marketing obviously plays a significant part. Marketing has a significant amount of power to affect the consumer’s perception and draw their attention to a certain brand. Marketing is therefore a skill that necessitates insight, creativity, and intelligence. My interest in marketing began to increase as I approached my degree’s final year. My enthusiasm for marketing is developing as a result of this, and it constantly nudges me to “dig deep and examine the numerous sides of the reality of marketing.”

My business management degree provided me with a strong foundation in business and management, including a basic knowledge of the discipline of marketing. My favourite parts of marketing lectures are the ones on consumer theory and online marketing. My desire for marketing drove me to use all of my learning and expertise to do a statistical study on social media communication, and as a result, my dissertation was a big success. My mentor awarded it an excellent assessment and made supportive comments, which strengthened my resolve to seek higher study.

In college, I participated in a variety of activities that gave me a lot of experience in leadership, teamwork, organisation, time management, etc. I have gotten better at cooperating and interacting with others through academic tasks, c-class lectures, and discussions. My friends describe me as someone who is passionate and energising. In college, I also served as the president of a number of clubs, including the environmental and reading clubs. I taught 10th graders in my spare time. This position gave me the chance to prepare, organise, and present knowledge in front of pupils, which allowed me to gradually build my self-confidence. At XYZ company, I furthermore spent four months working as a customer service representative. It was my responsibility to meet with a variety of clients to ascertain their wants and desires and figure out how effectively to meet them. My independence and competence at work have increased as a result of the demanding work environment and competition.

As most marketing professionals, I am very cognizant of the ways in which digital technology has redefined how suppliers and consumers connect. Digital media has significantly increased the effectiveness of marketing, making it essential in today’s competitive environment. I have a strong desire to succeed, and I am certain that obtaining a master’s in digital marketing is indeed the ideal route to go down in order to acquire a full picture of my desired career path. I have given a great deal of consideration to my decision to attend XYZ university to further my education. Your university has incredible facilities and an effective marketing curriculum plan, along with a reputation for marketing expertise. Furthermore, the large number of international students supports a vibrant and multicultural environment. Taking into account these factors, I am certain that XYZ University is the right choice for me to further my theoretical and practical skill sets while reaping the benefits of a diversified environment.

Readers should feel convinced that you are the right choice for the course after reading your conclusion.

Right?

So it’s time to find out how to write it in six steps.

Identify your goals.

What you wish to do or achieve in the future should be identified.

Many of the best personal statements offer insights into your coming years.

Discuss unique experiences.

Think about your past experiences.

Find out which ones are most passionate, then mark them.

Consider the lessons you took away from these encounters as well.

Look for your values.

Find out which values are related to your individual growth, passion, and desires after you’ve identified your values.

In your essay, you should make sure to explain these ideals to the reader.

Make an outline

Decide how you want to organise your ideas in the personal statement.

Describe your personal statement for digital marketing in clarity.

Draft your first personal statement.

After creating an outline, write your first version of a statement by taking 30 to 45 minutes. You don’t have to write perfectly in your first version.

Your first draft won’t be the final version.

Receive feedback.

Ask your friends, family, professors, mentors, or other professionals for their opinions and advice on your personal statement.

After that, you make changes until you’re satisfied with them.

What Are the Hurdles to Overcome When You Write?

 • Unable to adequately present it.

 • Making it resemble SOP

Tips to Avoid Mistakes

It is best to prevent grammatical mistakes..

You need to be careful not to let any minor spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors enter into your writing.

Eliminate jargon

Your personal statement should be brief and free of jargon. Try to use extra full stops to break up any long sections that are only separated by commas.

Overuse of quotations

The admissions panel is interested in hearing your voice. So unless you truly want to convey a really pertinent point, don’t include a quote.

Avoid complaining

Never criticise the institution or your personal circumstances, such as your poverty. Try to present them as a way for you to grow.

Proofread your writing.

Alumni Network

One notable alum from the University of Pennsylvania’s Marketing course is Jeff Weiner, the CEO of LinkedIn. Jeff graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. After graduating, he went on to become a successful entrepreneur, investor, and executive.

At LinkedIn, Jeff has been instrumental in helping the company become one of the most successful professional networking sites in the world. He has led the company to become a leader in the digital marketing space, helping to connect professionals from all over the world.

The University of Pennsylvania offers a number of alumni events and networking opportunities for its marketing alumni. One of the most popular events is the annual Marketing Alumni Reception, which is held in the fall. At this event, alumni can network with other professionals in the field, as well as learn about new developments in the industry. Additionally, the university also hosts a number of other events throughout the year, such as the Marketing Career Fair, which is held in the spring.

The University of Pennsylvania also offers its alumni the opportunity to join the Penn Alumni Network, which provides access to exclusive resources, events, and networking opportunities. Marketing Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

Is marketing an art or a science? Is it an informative blessing or an intrusive curse? Everyone has a different opinion on the subject, but for me, marketing is one thing above all; marketing is fun. I believe it has to be, or it simply won’t work. The days of information style announcements are long gone.

These days the advertiser must entertain and amuse their target audience if they want to have any hope of getting their message heard in the melee of modern media. This is the unspoken bargain that we all enter into.

I love the combination of strategy and creativity that makes a really good campaign. I always smile at clever, inventive media buying, where the company has really worked hard to match their product to the TV show or environment that it is being advertised in. I admire teaser campaigns that intrigue you and draw you in, despite our natural cynicism. And I love clever creative ideas that make you laugh and make you buy something, both at the same time.

I have always been a good persuader, and have been able to talk my way into, or out of, pretty much anything from an early age. I have developed this ability into the written word, writing copy that captures the imagination and gets people to act. Whenever there is a school production or a fundraising drive, I am usually called upon to come up with the words, and often the overall theme too.

To back up my interest in marketing, I have chosen my A-levels carefully. I chose psychology to help me understand how people’s minds work and mathematics, so that I could understand the inevitable figures and statistics that are needed to analyse a campaign. I also studied English Literature, partly to hone my writing skills, but also because I love to study other writing styles.

I wish I could say that I had the art skills to back up my marketing aspirations, but sadly I cannot create pictures with pencils and paints as easily as I can with words. Nonetheless, I have taken GCSE Art in my free periods to try and improve what ability I have, so that I can at least communicate my ideas to more skilled artists within a creative team.

I am keen on amateur dramatics, and love the way that a whole team has to pull together to make a production work, from the actors to the kid who works the curtains. I think that this has been good experience for a career in an advertising agency where teamwork is equally important. I also have a part time job at the local Tesco store, where I get to observe first hand how consumers react to the hundreds of different marketing messages they are bombarded with in the store. I am fascinated by human behaviour and relish the chance to see it up close as I anonymously stack the shelves nearby.

My ambition is to work my way up through the industry, building a reputation, until one day I am able to open an advertising agency of my own.

Business and Management (Marketing) Personal Statement

Living in London, which is ranked as the number one city for business , innovation and culture, exposes me to the world of economics and business on a daily basis. It was a lecture from the NBCUniversal Vice President of Digital Marketing, Neil Wirasinha, that first opened my eyes to marketing and its potential. His lecture described the various marketing techniques used to promote the film Fast and Furious 7 and I was fascinated to learn about the interplay between traditional forms of marketing and newer digital marketing techniques, and how these overarching strands of the global campaign were realised for individual countries and audiences. I think it would have been exciting to work on this campaign which aided the film to break several box office records and go on to take $1.5 billion worldwide. I hope that one day I will be able to say I worked on such an inspiring campaign and that my marketing ideas could have the sort of influence and impact that would lead to such incredible success.

I currently study A-Levels in Media, Film Studies and English Language. I believe these have taught me many transferable skills as well as providing me with a strong understanding of marketing principles. In Media Studies, I have learnt about marketing strategies used by key media industries and have developed my own marketing campaign to accompany my practical production of a film trailer/music video. In FIlm Studies I have learnt about a variety of marketing strategies used in the film industry from utilising digital technologies for viral campaigns to how marketing can help British film survive in the shadow of Hollywood to how marketing can be used to help create success for foreign films. English Language has taught me about the power of words and has helped hone my ability to use language in a clear and effective manner, which is useful in order to create successful marketing campaigns that appeal to the target audience. All three subjects have helped develop my analytical and critical thinking skills as they allow me to analyse and understand the construction and influence of a variety of different media products and texts.

I was very pleased to win a place on my school’s Media Academy programme. This has benefitted me greatly and led to some fantastic opportunities, including a six-week paid internship at Global Blue Inc which is a tourism shopping magazine company. Through this internship I gained knowledge and experience of the world of work and gained a great insight into marketing and the importance of brands. During the internship I was tasked with researching different fashion brands from all over Europe and Asia, making phone calls to potential clients abroad and setting up schedules for my group. This helped develop my networking and organisational skills which I feel will be beneficial at university. I also volunteered at the Hunter Fashion Show during London Fashion Week which helped polish my leadership and communication skills. As this was a live event these skills were critical in order to ensure the smooth running of the event. Fortunately I remained calm under pressure and was thrilled to be able to contribute to the success of the show.

I am a conscientious, hardworking young person who is reliable and eager to learn new skills. I enjoy working in a fast paced environment and always bring a positive energy to the team. I can work well independently or as part of a larger team. In my spare time I love to play sports and watch films and documentaries. I have a real interest in marketing, as evidenced by the fact I have already gained two marketing work placements. I look forward to furthering my knowledge and passion of marketing by undertaking a degree in the subject. I am also looking forward to experiencing all the opportunities university life has to offer. As Cesare Pavese said, “We do not remember days, we remember moments.” I just hope to have many of these ‘moments’ myself during my time at university.

Digital Marketing: Personal Statement

Digital Marketing: Personal Statement

Motivation and background.

Growing up, I have learned that the growth of the internet of things has brought a lot of advantages to the companies and have changed the social landscape. Digital explosion has caused a paradigm shift in the market forcing both corporation and marketers to either adapt or perish. This is the era of big data and personalization where social and mobile channels are increasing. Brands will be expected to provide value to the target audiences by creating genuinely useful and entertaining. After I completed Master in Business Administration, I was employed in various companies in various capacities. However, throughout my career and internship in various organizations stated in the attached curriculum vitae, I realized that most of the companies do not have a digital marketing expert who can develop, implement and manage the complex and sustainable digital and social media marketing strategies. I had opportunities to lend a hand in various departments and was even tasked with overseeing advanced digital strategies at the senior most level of the organization. My desire to pursue this course is passion driven and market-oriented. I have identified a lot of opportunities in the job market for digital marketing and I would like to take advantage of the educational opportunity provided by Trinity College Dublin's rigorous program to prepare myself for these opportunities in future.

The evolving fashion industry has an ultimate say in the styling and dressing preferences of the generation. New trends in the fashion industry keep coming. I find it an interesting pursuit to carve a career in the fashion marketing industry. It would be a gratifying experience for me to influence fashion trends through a multiplicity of channels. In marketing, I have heard that the sky’s the limit. Well, when it comes to something that I love, I would channelize my efforts to specialize in the domain. This justifies why I have decided to pursue the Master’s program in fashion marketing from your revered institution.

I have closely observed that fashion enthusiasts cherish the nostalgia from the previous eras. At the same time, new trends blend themselves seamlessly with the existing ones. My interest in both the domains of fashion and marketing makes me a suitable candidate for this program. Through my research, I have come to know that the global fashion industry is developing and ever-changing. I feel intrigued by its innovative and unpredictable nature. From the marketer’s perspective, I believe that everything that is carried out behind the scenes while developing a particular product is as crucial as what people get to see.

In the digitized world of business, the fashion retail industry has undergone a massive change. I would like to focus on the domain of sustainable fashion. I strongly believe in my abilities to specialize in the area of my interest and shape a lucrative career for myself. I feel myself lucky to have travelled extensively across different nations across the world. Visiting places brings me the chance to explore fashion trends. After all, fashion is powerful enough to shape a culture, and impart a distinct identity to an individual. I also believe that fashion trends should strongly articulate cultural elements from different parts of the world. A healthy integration of all these elements defines the cultural outfits of the world.

At college, I studied psychology, specializing in the business or commercial perspective. Channelizing my research and analytical skills, I developed my understanding on marketing after assessing the perspective of the buyers. This knowledge will largely assist me while forecasting fashion trends and researching the same. In the past, it has significantly assisted me in problem-solving. Now that I have developed my transferable skills, I can seamlessly imbibe the necessary knowledge in fashion marketing to craft my career.

Back in India, I already worked as a customer relationship manager at Forever 21, Mumbai. Working closely with a fashion apparel store largely shaped my profile. I utilized this opportunity to develop a strong understanding of merchandising and influencing my customers. While working with this company, I was responsible for fostering healthy relationships with our customers. In the process, I ensured the best quality service for the promotion of our products and the brand. Each day, I used to work on the sales figures and statistics to identify effective marketing trends. Besides, the brand entrusted me with the responsibility of dressing mannequins. I found a powerful means to express my creativity.

I have also undergone training on Coursera, following fashion marketing modules closely. It was a gratifying experience for me to imbibe industry-oriented knowledge on creating and designing products. Particularly, I love researching before designing any product. Given that I have a strong understanding of both the manufacturing and sales process of apparel, I can fit into the new institution. Presently, I have a basic understanding on how to attract customers in the fashion marketing domain. I have also gained hands-on experience in increasing revenues by promoting products. At the same time, I have honed valuable customer service skills.

At this juncture of my career, a specialized course on fashion marketing will open up fresh career opportunities for me. In India, I have a tremendous scope awaiting me in large fashion retail outlets. I aspire to capitalize on these opportunities by equipping myself with the necessary skills. An internationally recognized degree will complement my efforts and help me mature as a seasoned marketing professional in the Indian fashion industry. In a country that hosts hundreds of sub-cultures and creeds, it would be a challenging, yet interesting career to pursue.

Your university offers practical and industry-oriented knowledge. Having gone through the official website, I have come to know about the modules. It would be a pleasure for me to integrate myself into the dynamic academic environment in your revered institution. Imbibing the skills closely from seasoned professionals, I can leverage my understanding and skills. Your country has an established academic infrastructure, and the degrees are recognized across the globe. Considering all these aspects, I have decided to pursue the program from Canada. A berth in your institution will significantly propel my career in India. I promise to deliver my best and promote knowledge acquisition through peer learning at your institution.

What Should You Include in The Marketing Personal Statement?

Your business management and marketing personal statement should sound like an optimistic piece of writing where you show an immense amount of conviction, exposure, and vision. Here are the must-have components in this piece of writing.

About your interest in marketing

How strongly do you feel a liking for a career in marketing? Would you be willing to do it even if it pays less than another profession you could do? Universities will expect candidates who choose a career path out of true passion. So, express your passion for the field.

You have shown that you have an interest in marketing. Now, talk about one or two most relevant exposures you have in this field. For instance, your recent involvement in a digital marketing workshop or your hands-on experience in setting up an exhibition stall.

Academic and professional background

University admission panels would be interested in knowing about your past academic records, subjects you studied and if you have any professional history. Write about them and how each of them contributed to the shaping of who you are now. If there is a course change or gap, explain why. Try to highlight the benefits you gained from those seemingly negative areas rather than sounding apologetic.

Future plans

To be able to write what you will be interested in after you leave the institute, you need to know about the different career paths you can choose in the field of marketing. So, read about different options, visualize yourself donning any of those roles and write where you would like to see that particular career path down the line, say 5 years or 10 years time.

International Marketing Personal Statement Writing – Be Careful of These Do’s and Don’ts

Keep it personal and focused on you. Don’t write about Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. Write about yourself and what you aspire to become.

Prove your strong understanding of marketing. Show that you have chosen this particular career path with a strong understanding.

Make it interesting to read from start to end. Use a friendly tone throughout without compromising on the professional nature of the essay.

Be true to yourself. A genuine personal statement will identify more closely with the fact of who you are.

Pique the interest of the reader in the introduction. Similarly, give out what to take away from the document in the conclusion.

Don’t plagiarize your marketing personal statement. Plagiarism will not only get your application rejected but also lead to getting blacklisted.

Don’t rush to write. If you are left with no time to write a well-thought-out and error-free marketing masters personal statement, seek professional writers’ help.

Don’t write too long or too short. If it’s too long, selectors will think you have not prioritized your points. A too-short essay reveals your inability to present your points.

Don’t stuff in technical jargon to make it a complicated read. Personal branding is the public-facing identity you create for yourself. It’s an authentic but carefully managed representation of you as a professional.

Proving your experience and expertise in your field is a critical component of modern digital marketing.

Users and search engines prioritize first-hand knowledge , so personal branding can be a competitive advantage for businesses and individuals. It’s also helpful for career development and cultivating new opportunities.

The SEO industry is rife with misunderstandings and misinformation. As an SEO professional , personal branding is key to cutting through the noise and standing out.

Want to be seen as a trustworthy expert in your field?

If so, you’ll need to master the art of personal branding.

It’s an essential strategy for professionals in any industry who want to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

In this post, we’ll explore the ins and outs of personal branding and walk you through the fundamentals of building your own personal brand.

What Is Personal Branding?

Personal branding is the process of constructing a distinctive online brand identity for yourself, typically in a professional context.

Think of it as an ongoing effort to influence how others perceive you, including what values, interests, skills, and contributions they should associate with you.

The process involves actively curating your digital presence across different platforms to present a coherent and appealing image of who you are and what you stand for.

The ultimate goal of personal branding is to leave online audiences with a strong and memorable impression of who you are so you can establish yourself as a thought leader , expert, or influencer in your field.

Example of Personal Branding

Why Is Personal Branding Important?

In an era where attention spans are getting shorter by the minute, the need to make an impression is more important than ever – and the best way to do this is by creating a solid and memorable brand identity.

Unfortunately, many business owners do not realize the importance of personal branding because they think it’s a lot of extra work.

However, the truth is that if you want to create a successful business, you must create a successful brand.

People who know you and your business will trust you more and, ultimately, buy more products and services from you.

The 4 Benefits Of A Personal Brand

Establishing a strong personal brand offers several key benefits that can significantly enhance your professional and personal growth.

After all, your personal brand determines what others think and say about you when you’re not in the room. It’s basically your public reputation as a professional – and it can make or break your career.

Here are the four main benefits of successful personal branding:

1. Helps You Stand Out From The Crowd

Creating a personal brand allows you to showcase what makes you unique in your field – be it your specific skills, experiences, accomplishments, or personal values.

This differentiation makes you more memorable and attractive to potential employers , clients, or partners, enhancing your competitive edge in the job market and improving your ability to command a higher salary .

A well-developed personal brand clearly communicates your unique value proposition, making it easier for decision-makers to see why you’re the best fit for new projects and opportunities.

2. Increases Your Visibility And Recognition

Personal branding elevates your profile and positions you as a go-to expert in your field or industry.

This visibility comes with increased recognition that can extend well beyond your immediate network and pool of online followers.

For example, by consistently sharing insights and contributing valuable content within your niche, you can attract the attention of industry influencers, media outlets, and potential employers, customers, or clients.

In other words, by increasing your exposure, your personal brand serves as a springboard for new career opportunities.

3. Bolsters Your Credibility

One of the main psychology-based reasons to invest in your personal brand is that it helps you earn the trust of your audience.

By consistently sharing insightful content, engaging in meaningful conversations, and demonstrating your unique skills, you reinforce your reputation as a knowledgeable and reliable professional.

The more credibility you build, the more you’ll attract new opportunities and encourage others to seek your opinion, advice, and collaboration.

4. Gives You More Control Over Your Online Presence

When a client, follower, or industry peer mentions your name to someone new, chances are they’ll head to Google to see what the fuss is about.

Example 3 of personal branding

6 Steps To Build Your Own Personal Brand

So, what should you do to develop a personal brand?

Here are the six key steps to successful personal branding.

1. Define Your Brand Identity

The first step is all about self-reflection and clarity.

Your goal here is to figure out what you stand for and how you want to be perceived.

Identify what makes you unique – this could be a combination of your distinctive talents, perspectives, values, and passions. Consider your career achievements, distinguishing personality traits, and any notable challenges you’ve overcome that shape who you are today.

Remember to stay true to your authentic self, not just what you think others want to see. Being genuine will help you connect more deeply with your audience, shaping a brand identity that is both relatable and trustworthy.

Plus, being yourself is much less work than pretending to be someone else!

2. Determine Your Target Audience

Next, you need to clarify who your personal brand is speaking to.

Your target audience could be potential employers, clients in a specific industry, a professional community, or peers who share similar interests to you.

You should understand what they care about and their challenges so you can tailor your content and messaging to align with their specific needs.

3. Develop A Personal Brand Statement

A personal brand statement is a succinct description of who you are, what you do, who you serve, and why it matters.

Think of it as your professional tagline.

It should be compelling and memorable, encapsulating your unique value proposition.

For example, if you’re a software developer with a focus on educational technology, your personal brand statement might be something like: “Designing edtech to empower learners everywhere.”

A solid brand statement not only helps focus your communication across different platforms but is also a powerful tool that can differentiate you from your peers and competitors.

4. Optimize Your Online Presence

Once you’ve laid the groundwork for your personal brand, it’s time to update your digital footprint accordingly.

Make sure your social media profiles on platforms like LinkedIn and your personal website are polished, professional, and aligned with your brand identity. Consider removing any old posts or content pieces that don’t reflect the image you want to project.

It’s also worth investing in new professional headshots, a logo for your brand, and a consistent color scheme and design elements across your platforms. Visual consistency helps reinforce your brand identity and makes you easily recognizable to your audience.

5. Create And Share Valuable Content

Posting high-quality content is essential for establishing your authority and amplifying your message.

You can bolster your reputation and expand your reach by creating and sharing insightful blog posts, social media content, and videos, as well as appearing on other creators’ podcasts and YouTube channels.

Your content should not only reflect your professional insights but also your unique personality and perspectives.

Also, to build your email list, it’s a good idea to offer audience members a free, valuable resource on your website (like an ebook, webinar, or online course) in exchange for their email address.

6. Network And Engage With Your Community

Finally, building and nurturing a professional network is critical.

In addition to connecting with people online, you should actively engage with their content, contribute to relevant industry conversations, and participate in both virtual and in-person events related to your field.

Offering your expertise by answering questions, sharing insights, and providing valuable feedback solidifies your reputation as an approachable and knowledgeable thought leader.

By investing time in building relationships and promoting the work and efforts of your peers, you’ll foster more goodwill around your brand, which could open up new doors for you down the line.

The digital marketing CV example above shows how the structure and format work in practice.

Your own CV will of course be unique, but this should give you a good base to work from, and an idea of what elements you should be highlighting.

Pick a focus for your digital marketing CV

Before you write a single word of your CV, you must decide on its purpose.

As a marketer; if you were planning a SEO campaign or building a landing page, you would firstly need to determine who you are looking to target, and what goals you are trying to achieve.

Without knowing these 2 factors, your marketing efforts will probably fail.

Your CV is your marketing material for your job search, so it’s important that you know it’s audience and purpose before you start writing it.

You need to ask yourself:

What types of roles will you be applying for?

Digital marketing covers a broad spectrum of activities, so you need to be clear about exactly which roles you are applying for, before you start crafting your CV.

For example you may be applying to…

 • SEO specialist roles where the job is solely focused on organic traffic generation
 • Email marketing roles where you will be tasked with increasing sales via email campaigns
 • Digital Marketing Manager roles where you are responsible for the full digital marketing spectrum of a company or area within a company.

Who will you be sending your CV to?

Once you have determined the types of roles you will be applying for, you can also choose what type of employers you will be targeting.

This could be one or more of a broad range of organisations such as:

 • Digital agencies who work with multiple clients
 • Online retailers
 • A specific type of online retailer: such as clothing, homeware etc.
 • Insurance companies

Once you know the roles and companies that you are targeting, you have a clear focus for your CV.

This part of the of the process is similar to creating a buyer persona in marketing terms.

As a marketer, you probably know that if you try to attract everyone in a campaign with too broad targeting, you will probably end up attracting nobody.

The same is true of your CV.

If you make it too broad, you won’t impress many recruiters or employers because you will not appear as an expert in any particular area.

The more narrowly you target your CV, the more attractive it will be to those who you are trying to reach.

Here are some examples of good CV focuses:

 • SEO Manager for Online Retailers
 • User Experience (UX) Designer for Digital Agencies
 • Social Media Manager for Large Corporates
 • Digital Marketing Manager for Cross-industry Small Businesses

Note: It’s OK to focus your CV solely on your skills and apply cross-industry, if you don’t have an industry specialism or preference.

Also, if you are looking to apply in 2 or more very different areas, it’s best to have multiple CVs that are each strongly targeted towards each specific area.

To help you pick a focus for your digital marketing CV , we have created this handy infographic which shows 63 valuable digital marketing skills you could potentially add to your CV.

63 valuable digital marketing skills for your CV

Research employer needs

Once you’ve decided on a focus for your CV, you need to determine what qualities your target employers are looking for in a candidate.

Failing to do this will mean that you are simply using guesswork to generate the contents of your CV.

After some thorough research, you will know exactly what to put in your CV to impress recruiters, and therefore writing it will become much easier.

So how do you research employer needs?

i) Hit the job boards

One of the easiest ways to research employer needs is by visiting a relevant job website and scanning through plenty of digital marketing jobs that you would apply for.

Make a list of the candidate requirements that frequently appear, to gather the most important attributes for employers.

Focus on hard factual skills like the ones in the above infographic.

Don’t worry too much about soft skill s like, “motivation”, “team work” etc. as these types of qualities are generic and needed in any job – recruiters will not be actively searching for them.

ii) Scan LinkedIn

A global search for “digital marketing” on LinkedIn , returns over 6 million profiles, so you should be able to find some strong profile examples in your niche.

If you’re already on LinkedIn, you will probably have a decent network of peers to scan through. If not, then sign up and start connecting with colleagues and friends.

Search for professionals who are working in similar roles to the ones you are applying for, and take some inspiration from the skills and tools they are including in their profiles.

Once you’ve decided a focus for your CV and researched the needs of your target employers, you will be in a much stronger position to start writing your CV .

Most candidates write their CV without any research, based on what they think is important and usually end up with a CV that only impresses themselves.

If you want to impress employers, you need to find out what will impress them first.

Formatting and structuring your digital marketing CV

Now that you understand the message you are trying to convey with your CV, you need to create an effective structure and format .

When formatting your CV, you must bear the 2 following points in mind.

1) Easy reading

Recruiters and hiring managers sometimes see hundreds of CVs in a week, so make it easy for them to navigate your CV and find the information that they want.

2) Professionalism

Your CV is often the very first impression that a recruiter will have of you, so it should look immaculate and not give them any reason to doubt you.

Quick tip: If you worry that your spelling and grammar might not be correct, try using our quick-and-easy CV Builder to eliminate the risk of making mistakes.

The diagram below shows a very high level overview of how you should structure your digital marketing CV.

CV structure

I would advise writing your CV in Microsoft Word, as it has all the features you will need for writing your CV and is generally considered to be the standard format amongst recruiters and employers.

Don’t be tempted to go wild on design by adding logos and multiple colours – it can cause distraction and confuse CV scanning software . Keep it simple and focus on the written content.

Create an eye catching profile

Your profile is a short introductory paragraph which sits at the top of your CV. It summarises you at a very high level and tells readers the benefits of hiring you.

As your profile will be the first visible point of your CV once it is opened, it needs to make a big impact.

If your profile doesn’t contain the important requirements for your target roles, some recruiters may close it down without reading any further – which is bad news for your applications.

Think of your profile as a quick sales pitch to get your foot in the door.

As a digital marketer, your profile should include:

 • Type and size of companies/clients you have worked for
 • Specialisms with digital marketing (SEO, email marketing, PPC etc.)
 • Type of projects you have worked on and their size and impact
 • Tools and technologies you are familiar with
 • Relevant qualifications
 • What problems do you solve for your employers? (increase engagement, boost revenue, increase conversion rates?)

You should avoid using too many cliche terms such as;

 • Hard working
 • Team player
 • Self-motivated
 • Positive attitude

These phrases are too generic and don’t tell readers anything factual about you. Recruiters will be searching for hard factual experience, skills and knowledge – not cliche phrases.

Here is an example of a digital marketing CV profile.

Digital Marketing CV profile

Try to keep yours to around the same length whilst maintaining a punchy and professional writing style.

See more CV profile examples here .

Add a core skills section

By adding a bullet pointed core skills section just underneath your profile, you can ensure that essential points instantly jump out at readers to give them a very quick snapshot of your skill set.

CV core skills

These points should include skills, tools, qualifications and anything else that ties in directly to your target employers’ requirements.

Bear in mind that it’s best for your current or most recent role to be visible when the CV is opened, so keep your profile and core skills short enough to allow this.

It’s similar to keeping important elements above the fold on a web page, to ensure they are seen without making the user scroll down.

Write your CV role descriptions

Your role descriptions give you a great opportunity to describe how you contribute to your employers’ success. They must be organised and structured correctly in order to communicate your message effectively.

Firstly, your roles should be listed in reverse chronological order, with plenty of detail in recent roles, and less detail in older roles. This is because recruiters will be most interested in your recent work to gain an understanding of your current capabilities. They won’t be so interested in the work you did years ago, but it should still be included (in less detail) to show your career path.

Work experience

Structuring your roles

To ensure that your roles are easy to read, navigate and understand, a logical structure is crucial.

Head the role up with an introductory paragraph that summarises:

 • What your employer does
 • What your area/team do (if working for a large firm)
 • Where you sit within the hierarchy
 • What the overall goal of your role is
 • How your work contributes the goals of your employer

Digital Marketing example role

Once you’ve set the scene with an informative intro; list your responsibilities in a series of bullet points to demonstrate your daily/weekly/monthly activities.

Keep the bullet points to one line in length to allow easy scanning, and where possible, try to show how your actions benefit your employer.

Responsibilities will differ from job to job but some important things to include are:

 • People you interact with: clients, colleagues, vendors, contractors, regulators etc.
 • Tools and languages used: HMTL, WordPress, Mailchimp, Facebook, Hootsuite etc.
 • Work produced: Web pages, articles, email campaigns, reports etc.
 • Projects you contribute to: website builds, marketing campaigns etc.
 • Environments worked in: busy agency, secure government building etc.

Show your impact

Impact of achievements in CV

If you really want to prove your value as an employee, include some impressive achievements that have impacted the business greatly.

In digital marketing, achievements could include:

 • Increasing traffic to a website or page
 • Building a huge social media following
 • Generating a large number of leads for a service or product
 • Increasing revenue for an employer
 • Gaining an industry recognised award

These types of achievements show employers the benefits they can expect to see, if they bring you on board.

Add numbers

Ideally you should quantify your value by adding tangible facts and figures to back these achievements up.

For example:

 • Built a 10k Facebook following and 20k Twitter following from scratch
 • Generated a 300% uplift in organic traffic to website in 6 months
 • Generated 5,000 leads and converted 30% into high value sales
 • Delivered PPC campaign with a £20k return on investment

By including numbers in your achievements, you make them instantly recognisable to readers and allow them to bench mark you against other candidates.

Education, qualifications and technical skills

Your education, qualifications and any relevant technical skills should be listed in detail at the bottom, as in the example below.

Important aspects from this section should be repeated in your profile to ensure they are noticed by recruiters.

For experienced candidates, your profile will be focused around your work experience, but for junior candidates (such as school leaver and graduates) your profile will be more focused on your education and qualifications.

Education

Interests and hobbies are an optional section. I would only recommend adding your interests if they are relevant to your target roles or digital marketing in general – or if they are particularly impressive.

Work/digital marketing related interests

 • Creating your own websites
 • Writing articles or blogs
 • Selling products on eBay

Impressive interests

 • Running marathons
 • Volunteering
 • Organising events

Final checks

Your CV is a professional marketing document for your services, so it needs to be immaculate. It only takes one mistake to make a recruiter doubt your credibility.

Before you take your CV out on the job market, proof read it thoroughly to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes, grammar errors or typos.

Don’t rely on spellcheck to do all the work for you.

Businesses are woven into every part of our lives and marketing plays a key role in influencing our decisions. By understanding and developing relationships with consumers, businesses can be less obtrusive and more enriching to our lives; this in turn will grow more sustainable businesses.

This intersection between people and brands is a key area of interest which I am determined to build my knowledge and career on.

During my BSc course, emphasis was placed on observing user behaviour to find key insights. The empathy this human centred method gave me ultimately led to better designed products and services. I applied this to my role at Studio Make Believe as I analysed brand identities and the way they were perceived, to design products that effectively communicated their stories.

I also developed a research document expressing key insights for potential growth areas that the brand implemented. I saw the importance of marketing to develop creative strategies for more effective brand experiences.

Presenting products to clients and negotiating prices with suppliers gave me a practical outlook on the entire product lifecycle as well as the challenges of communicating across cultures. Due to these interactions, I am eager to learn strategic methods of branding and business management on an international platform.

I have been influenced by talks on the theory of affordances and explored the practical applications of behavioural economics in the International Design Camp. I collaborated with students from various disciplines to design services that would improve dental health in young children.

The experience made me considerate of many possible applications to marketing practices. I am eager to apply this design thinking and develop analytical skills in the Consumer Behaviour module. In the near future, I aim to pursue a career orienting brands and market research.

A personal endeavour to start my own business began as I travelled parts of India to better understand a culture I am a part of but have not really known. I noticed brands that we are familiar with at home were portrayed slightly differently to suit lifestyles of eastern consumers, whilst retaining their core image.

This drew me to connect with local manufacturers to design modern homewares, uniting traditional materials with a strong sense of functionality, that could be well received in western lifestyles. I saw the narrative of the collaborative process as a strong selling point.

Working with small communities to evolve dying crafts was a rewarding experience despite challenges of language barriers and differences in work ethic. I plan to turn this passion into a business. Taking this course would equip me with the practical and theoretical knowledge of all aspects of international marketing to achieve my long-term goal of making it a success.

Working as a manager and tutor for a local business has fed my appetite for analytical thinking. The learning environment has been advantageous to my creative career as it demands a flexible mind. I have seen the business grow from its humble beginnings, allowing me to see the value of marketing in the many roles I took, from designing the logo to managing other people.

I have seen the importance of the relationship between people and business on small and large scales. I believe this is more vital now to due globalisation and ever-growing digital economy. Businesses must now work harder to understand global cultures and values whilst upholding their own identity. Therefore International Marketing is crucial in grasping this area.

The research environment at King’s would allow me to build on insights which are critical to uncovering practical solutions to close this gap. I hope to contribute to discussions and develop knowledge for my personal development. I strive to better myself and would be honoured to resume my studies at King’s. The international reputation and global environment would stimulate and support my development.
