New Indian Movies & Series on Netflix: March 2024

9 films and 2 series dropped this month!

After a couple of slow months to start 2024, Netflix roared back with plenty of new Indian content in March. In addition to some Hindi theatrical blockbusters, fans got four new Indian Originals this month, including a courtroom comedy, an Oscar-nominated documentary, a murder mystery, and a variety show. Here are all of the new Indian movies and series added to Netflix in March 2024.

New Indian Movies on Netflix: March 2024

12th fail (2023).

Language: Hindi Runtime: 147 Minutes Director: Vidhu Vinod Chopra Cast: Vikrant Massey, Medha Shankar, Joshi Anantvijay Genre: Biographical, Social Issue Drama | Added to Netflix: March 1

Though not a strict biopic, 12th Fail is based on the life of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who grew up in rural poverty but became a high-ranking Indian civil servant. The film shows how labyrinthine and competitive the process for passing the federal civil service exam is, and how that complexity weeds out applicants without money and connections. 12th Fail is about as fast-paced as you’d expect a film with lots of scenes of studying and taking tests to be (not very), but it was a surprise box office hit in 2023.

Anweshippin Kandethum (2024)

Languages: Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, & Telugu Runtime: 142 Minutes Director: Darwin Kuriakose Cast: Tovino Thomas, Siddique, Indrans Genre: Drama, Thriller | Added to Netflix: March 7

A police officer returns to work after being wrongfully suspended based on the results of a politically charged investigation. His new assignment is equally sensitive, but it gives him the chance to clear his name and deliver justice for a missing woman. Additional dialogue options are available in the film’s audio menu.

Merry Christmas (2024)

Languages: Hindi, Tamil, & Telugu Runtime: 144 Minutes Director: Sriram Raghavan Cast: Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi, Tinnu Anand Genre: Mystery, Based on a Book | Added to Netflix: March 7

Lending a helping hand to a struggling young mother on Christmas Eve puts a man in a dangerous position in the mystery Merry Christmas . Talented director Sriram Raghavan’s adaptation of the French novel Bird in a Cage by Frédéric Dard is undeniably stylish, but it could have used more substance. Merry Christmas was filmed simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil, and there are minor differences in the supporting cast of each film. Both language versions have their own individual catalogue entries, as does a dubbed Telugu version.

To Kill a Tiger (2022) N

Languages: Hindi, English, French, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin America), Tamil, & Telugu Runtime: 125 Minutes Director: Nisha Pahuja Genre: Documentary | Added to Netflix: March 10

Celebrated Canadian documentary filmmaker Nisha Pahuja earned an Academy Award nomination for To Kill a Tiger , which debuted on Netflix the same day as the Oscar ceremony (where it lost to 20 Days in Mariupol ). Pahuja’s documentary follows a father in small village in Jharkhand, India who seeks justice after his teenage daughter is raped. Thundu (2024)

Languages: Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, & Telugu Runtime: 125 Minutes Director: Riyas Shereef Cast: Noushad Ali, Anand Bbal, Shine Tom Chacko Genre: Comedy | Added to Netflix: March 14

An upright cop scolds his teenage son for cheating on a quiz. But when test-phobic Dad’s promotion hinges on his passing a written exam, will he be able to hold himself to his own high moral standards and resist the urge to cheat? Additional dialogue options can be found in the film’s audio menu.

Murder Mubarak (2024) N

Languages: Hindi, English, Indonesian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, & Telugu Runtime: 141 Minutes Director: Homi Adajania Cast: Pankaj Tripathi, Sara Ali Khan, Vijay Varma Genre: Mystery, Comedy | Added to Netflix: March 15

When the handsome personal trainer at a posh country club in Delhi is murdered, it puts the wealthy club members under scrutiny from an unconventional investigator, played by Pankaj Tripathi. The well-heeled, eccentric characters will remind many viewers of Knives Out , but Murder Mubarak is actually based on the novel Club You to Death by Anuja Chauhan. The mystery is decent, but the humor falls a bit flat. Additional dialogue options — including Hindi and Spanish audio description tracks — are available in the film’s audio menu.

Fighter (2024)

Languages: Hindi, English, Portuguese (Brazil), & Spanish (Latin America) Runtime: 164 Minutes Director: Siddharth Anand Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor Genre: Action, Military | Added to Netflix: March 20

It’s reductive but apt to describe Fighter as Bollywood’s answer to Top Gun . Even Netflix’s official description of the film sounds familiar: “A reckless yet brilliant squadron leader and his team of elite fighter pilots face mortal dangers and inner demons as they unite for a deadly mission.” Exciting action sequences and a sexy cast made Fighter the first Hindi box office hit of 2024. Language: Tamil Runtime: 145 Minutes Director: Bejoy Nambiar Cast: Arjun Das, Kalidas Jayaram, T.J. Bhanu Genre: Drama | Added to Netflix: March 29

Filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar — who previously directed The Fame Game and a segment of Navarasa for Netflix — is back with a raucous Tamil drama. Two former friends meet again as rivals in an explosive encounter at their university’s cultural festival.

The Ghazi Attack (2017)

Language: Hindi Runtime: 122 Minutes Director: Sankalp Reddy Cast: Rana Daggubati, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni Genre: Action, Military | Added to Netflix: March 31

The Ghazi Attack was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, but only the Hindi version is available on Netflix. The story is based on the mysterious sinking of the Pakistani submarine Ghazi in the run-up to Pakistan’s war with India in 1971. Director Sankalp Reddy’s version follows the crew of a rival Indian sub that encounters the Ghazi , creating tension between the crew, their maverick captain, and the intelligence officer tasked with preventing all-out war.

New Indian Series on Netflix: March 2024

Maamla legal hai (2024) n.

Languages: Hindi, English, Tamil, & Telugu Seasons: 1 Episodes: 8 Cast : Ravi Kishan, Naila Grewal, Nidhi Bisht Genre: Courtroom Comedy | Added to Netflix: March 1

Set in the fictional Patparganj District Court, a team of eccentric lawyers takes on bizarre cases in the courtroom comedy Maamla Legal Hai . Ravi Kishan ( Khakee: The Bihar Chapter , Hasmukh ) leads the way as Advocate VD Tyagi, president of the local bar association who aspires be India’s Attorney General. The Great Indian Kapil Show (2024) N

Language: Hindi Seasons: 1 Episodes: new episodes every Saturday Cast : Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Archana Puran Singh Genre: Comedy, Talk Show, Variety | Added to Netflix: March 30

Popular comedian and TV host Kapil Sharma brings his talents to Netflix. His new show is a variation on formats of his previous shows, featuring a mix of sketch comedy and celebrity interviews in front of a live studio audience. The cast of supporting characters is made of comedians who’ve appeared on his earlier shows, and the trailer teases appearances by celebrity guests like Ranbir Kapoor and Amar Singh Chamkila ‘s Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. New hour-long episodes air weekly on Saturday nights at 8 p.m. India Standard Time (IST).

GupShup's sleek interior

As New Delhi and Mumbai natives, my husband, Mahir, and I like to think that we know something about Indian food. We know what good Indian food is, at least, and in New York where we live, it’s few and far between.

Our options to travel back to India through its cuisine are limited in this global city— we often visit London to get our fix or enjoy it on our visits back home. That changed in the last year when we were introduced to Jimmy Rizvi and his multiple restaurant concepts in town, each fresh, zippy and delicious in its own way.

Born in Indore, India, Jimmy transitioned to restaurants from a previous career in finance and concert promotion.

He got his start in the industry with Korali in 2015 on the Upper East Side and also created another Greek/Mediterranean concept in 2017 called NISI Estiatorio in the West Village.

Sensing a real need for a modern Indian brand with genuine hospitality and exceptional creative cuisine, Jimmy fulfilled his longtime dream of opening his own Bombay-inspired concept with the November 2018 launch of GupShup . It’s an always-packed venue with creative cocktails, the best tequilas and scotches and flavor-packed Indian dishes with a contemporary spin-just try the share-able chicken biryani, and you’ll see what I mean.

Chote Miya , a fast casual concept offering Indian street food in Chelsea Market followed. It takes me to Mumbai’s Chowpatty Beach where vendors hawk the same small plates. Ammi , a homage to India’s comfort food, came next at Pier 57 on the West Side.

There’s Some Good News For ‘3 Body Problem’ Season 2

Now here may be his greatest hit: Jimmy recently opened Bungalow in the East Village with acclaimed Michelin star chef and humanitarian Chef Vikas Khanna. It’s the hottest restaurant in New York at the moment and has a 1,500 person waiting list.

I interviewed Jimmy recently about his restaurant concepts, all grouped under Bombay House Hospitality, and the secret to his success

Can you tell us about your different restaurant concepts?

Bungalow is about the social clubs of India from a bygone era. The menu is pretty unique and covers dishes from Kashmir to Kerala, and each menu item is Chef Vikas’s interpretation of his travels and experiences through India but for a New York audience.

Bungalow’s design is very unique and was created by my sister Shaila Rizvi Every item- chairs, chandeliers, plates are custom made.

GupShup is all about a modern Indian food and craft cocktails and has a massive following among both South Asian’s and New Yorker’s.

Chote Miya, a take on the iconic Bade Miya, in Mumbai serving Indian food in a casual setting. Chote Miya opened in July 2022 in Chelsea Market, and it’s the first Indian spot in Chelsea Market in its 25 years since opening. The focus on the menu is kabab’s, street food items like pain puri, rolls, lamb chapel burger in a very casual and grab and go setting with a very affordable price point.

Ammi is a casual concept with the feel of home cooked Indian meals. I feel that as an immigrant the emotion of a home kitchen is healing in many ways. We are so grateful to see how our guests respond to Ammi’s cuisine.

What makes each venue unique?

Each venue caters to a different audience, and the focus has been to stick to different kinds of Indian food and cocktails, considering the price point’s, and heavy focus on quality and presentation of food with excellent decor and branding.

How do you think you're different from other Indian restaurants in New York?

We do not want to be different, we want to be a part of our community and serve in a very collective way. We try to focus on the overall brand and our guests that we are planning to cater to. This is the reason not one concept of ours has any similarity to another concept of ours. I personally feel that our restaurants are like small shadows of vast Indian cuisine that has evolved over centuries in the subcontinent.

GupShup is a restaurant that is known for its buzzy vibe. What makes the restaurant a destination?

GupShup was conceived as a place of high energy and beautiful food. I wanted to bring my vision to life by creating a modern space that is layered with great hospitality. At GupShup, it’s all about building a vibrant community. My kitchen team has created some amazing dishes based on this vision. The food is purely Indian with the vibe of New York.

In your opinion, what are Indian restaurants lacking today?

I don’t think that they lack anything. They are doing their best in representing India We lift each other, and that is why we have evolved so beautifully.

What is the secret to opening a successful restaurant in New York today?

No one knows the answer. New Yorkers have so much choice, and it’s hard to imagine that someone has figured out how to be successful consistently. One tip that I can think of is to keep going and pushing. This is the greatest and the most challenging city in the world, but the most gratifying.

Can you share your top piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Failure means to try a different equation. Surround yourself with the team that wants to work towards a bigger and more successful picture.

Eduardo Medina and Pete Kiehart spent about an hour riding in a Coast Guard boat to observe the wreckage.

Maroon containers larger than a car sat twisted and crushed. Massive beams of steel warped into crooked arches. Pillars of jagged concrete poked out from the water — a tomb of wreckage that dimly reflected on the gray-toned river.

From roughly 100 yards away, deep into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, the site of one of the worst bridge collapses in the country’s history is a haunting scene.

The U.S. Coast Guard allowed The New York Times to ride aboard a response boat on Saturday afternoon to witness up close the destruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which was struck by the cargo ship Dali on Tuesday, killing six men, all construction workers who were working on filling potholes on the bridge.

As the 45-foot-long Coast Guard vessel neared the scene of the disaster, a service member who had made several trips to the site braced passengers for the view to come.

“It’s still shocking every time.”

The Coast Guard boat initially neared the cargo ship on the rear side, the stern, which was spared from much of the impact of the collapse. Two people could be seen walking along the starboard, though it was unclear if they were investigators or crew members, all of whom are from India and have remained on the ship to keep it operable.

An anchor that the crew members had used in desperation to keep the ship from hitting the bridge was visible, submerged in calm water. A thin and yellow boom floated around the ship to contain spills. It looked similar to crime-scene tape. The gray and red shipping containers were stacked up to nine rows high, partly shielding for a moment the wreckage that lay behind it.

As the Coast Guard boat inched closer toward the cargo ship, the humongous scale of the collapse came into view. Some state officials onboard, who were not authorized to speak to the news media, shook their heads and muttered under their breath.

“Oh, my gosh.”

Warped masses of the bridge sliced the steel deck of the ship, causing pieces of the blue hull to peel outward. On a wide piece of the deck cratered by the bridge’s blow, knots of blackened metal morphed into a jumbled, metallic maze.

A large piece of concrete stuck out of the ship. Two people wearing all orange moved through the wreckage on the deck, balancing themselves with their hands and feet, as if it were a mountain. The birds swirling beside the cargo, searching for fish below, made the magnitude of the bridge and the ship even more pronounced.

A boat that appeared to belong to the Army Corps of Engineers moved in between the triangular spaces of the bridge’s submerged beams. Other boats with cranes attached cruised nearby. Toward the northern and southern sides of the river, the offramp portions of the bridge stood high, the void between them now transformed into a deadly memorial.

Few distinct sounds emanated from the site. Strong winds moved currents of water against chunks of debris. Faint noises from boat engines whirled in the air.

Mostly, though, there was sheer silence. Passengers aboard the Coast Guard vessel appeared to spend almost as much time glancing down at the water as they did looking up.

The bodies of Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, of Dundalk, Md., were recovered this week.

But down below, perhaps beneath the tangled remnants of a bridge that connected two working-class neighborhoods in Baltimore, were the remains of four men not yet recovered by divers: Miguel Luna, in his 40s, of El Salvador; Maynor Yasir Suazo Sandoval, in his 30s, of Honduras; Jose López, in his 30s, of Guatemala; and a fourth man who has not been identified by the authorities.

As the Coast Guard ship turned around late Saturday afternoon, its engine roaring louder, heavy clouds hovered overhead. Soon, the scene of the collapse, stretching across the pale waters of the horizon, seemed to fade. The images seared into memory did not.
