Why do I need safety glasses?

Wearing safety glasses

Many workers underestimate the importance of eye safety, especially when working eight hours a day, five days a week. Yet each day, about 2,000 workers in the U.S. experience a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment, and more than 100 lose one or more days of work due to their injuries.

These eye injuries often are due to exposure to a harmful substance, getting a foreign object stuck in the eye or being struck in the eye by an object. Fortunately, you can avoid most eye injuries by wearing a pair of high-quality safety glasses that have impact-resistant lenses.

Preventing job-related eye injuries

Hazards exist in every workplace, but some have a higher risk of eye injuries. Safety glasses are recommended for people who work in or around potentially dangerous conditions. This includes work in manufacturing, construction, landscaping, auto repair, plumbing, woodworking, agriculture, mining, metal fabrication and health care.

Wearing safety glasses on the job is more than just a good idea — it's your right. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration , or OSHA, requires employers to provide eye and face protection for employees whenever they may be exposed to potential eye injuries during their work, if work practices or engineering controls do not eliminate the risk of injury.

I also recommend that people wear safety glasses when working on household tasks like lawn mowing, chopping wood or using strong cleaning products.

Safety glasses benefits

Safety glasses are not regular glasses, and regular glasses are not a replacement for safety glasses. A major difference is the material used in the lenses. Some safety lenses are made with the same material that is used for airplane windshields, which is tested to withstand high-impact projectiles. The risk of this material shattering is negligible. Most conventional eyeglass lenses, while sturdy and built for everyday wear, are made of a plastic called acetate. That is not heavy-duty enough to protect your eyes in work situations.

Another difference is the wide coverage provided by safety glasses. In addition to protecting the eyes from objects in the front, safety glasses have side shields to protect the peripheral and temple areas. Regular glasses are meant for comfort, not protection, with no additional coverage.

Prescription safety glasses

Some people who need prescription lenses for clear vision opt for safety goggles that can be worn over their regular glasses. This isn't the safest option. Regular glasses under safety goggles can interfere with how the goggles sit on the face or, in some cases, seal to the face. The safest, most comfortable option is to order prescription safety glasses. Safety glasses can be customized with prescriptions that give wearers the best vision possible while maintaining safety for their eyes.

Prescription safety glasses must meet requirements established by OSHA and the American National Standards Institute to be classified as protective eyewear. There are many frame options that meet national requirements. Some have the appearance of regular eyewear with detachable side shields. Talk with your optometrist about the best option for you.

Avoid workplace eye injuries by wearing protective eyewear

By Carolyn Barden

Importance of workplace eye protection

Workplace eye injuries impact workers in a variety of industries all over the world. According to the International Labour Organization, around 3.5 million eye injuries occur in the workplace globally each year. In the U.S., around 2,000 American employees suffer work-related eye injuries each day.

Wearing the proper protective eyewear on the job is the best way to prevent work-related eye injuries. Eye doctors and safety professionals stress that wearing proper eye protection can reduce workplace eye injuries by up to 90% .

In fact, nearly three-fifths of workers who sustained injuries weren’t wearing eye protection for the task during which they were injured because they didn’t think they needed it . They were wrong.

Jobs that need protective eyewear

Eye protection is especially important in occupations and industries with higher risk of eye injury, including:

Manufacturing

Construction

Plumbing

Electrical work

Auto repair

Health care, laboratory and janitorial work

The best type of protective eyewear to use will vary based on the specific situation.

SEE RELATED: Eye safety basics

Common workplace eye hazards

Different work environments and occupations present their own potential eye injury risks. A few different types of eye injuries include:

Impact injuries – When flying objects such as wood dust particles, metal shavings or certain pieces of equipment get into or strike the eyes

Heat-related injuries – When high-temperature items like sparks, extremely hot air or molten metal splash up into the eyes

Chemical eye damage – When dangerous chemicals or their fumes get into the eyes, resulting in chemical eye burns

Hot steam burns – When certain machinery unexpectedly releases blasts of steam and burns the face and eyes

Optical radiation injuries – When unprotected eyes are damaged by high levels of optical radiation from visible light, ultraviolet radiation from the sun or infrared radiation from lasers

Mucous membrane exposure – When pathogens and infectious diseases spread through bodily fluids, they can be transmitted through the mucous membranes in the eyes

Protective eyewear can help shield the eyes from various workplace threats and keep them safe while on the job.

How does safety eyewear protect your eyes?

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that all protective eye safety devices must meet higher impact resistance standards than your regular everyday glasses.

OSHA uses standards established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in three key areas to evaluate the lenses and frames of safety glasses:

High-velocity impact – This measures how well the lens and frame resist the impact of a small object hitting the lens at high speed.

High-mass impact – This determines whether the lens will stay in the frame when struck by a fairly heavy object.

Durability – This tests the frame for corrosion and fire resistance, as well as other important safety factors.

Safety glasses that adhere to ANSI standards are marked as:

Z87 – Frames for basic impact

Z87+ – Frames that meet requirements for high impact

Z87-2 – Prescription safety glasses

Types of protective eyewear

Safety eyewear should be worn to protect workers’ eyes from various hazards in working environments. Designs can combine multiple features to address different workplace risks.

The three main types of protective eyewear are:

Safety glasses

Safety goggles.

Face shields

Other types of eye protection may also be recommended or required, depending on the nature of your work. For example, a welding helmet is a very specialized form of protective eyewear.

When it comes to protective eyewear, safety glasses are the first level of protection from eye injury. When shopping for safety glasses, keep in mind the different options you may have available to best meet your needs:

Prescription safety glasses – Prescription safety glasses accommodate users who need vision correction. Corrective lens options include single-vision, bifocal or progressive lenses.

Non-prescription safety glasses – Also called “plano” safety glasses, this option is available for those who don’t need corrective (prescription) lenses.

Safety glasses with side shields – Safety glasses with side shields are especially important if there’s any risk of debris flying near your eyes. Examples include dust, metal shavings, wood particles or flying objects.

People who work in laboratories and other environments with chemical vapor and splash hazards may not get all the eye protection they need from standard safety glasses. Instead, they should wear a pair of well-fitted safety goggles.

When properly adjusted, the goggles essentially create a seal around your eyes. This allows them to offer a higher degree of protection against both liquid and airborne risks, like chemical splashes and fumes, as well as some types of optical radiation. They should also be impact-resistant.

Safety goggles have three different types of ventilation to choose from:

Direct ventilated – Air is allowed to flow directly into the goggles.

Indirect ventilated – A covered vent allows ventilation while providing splash protection.

Non-ventilated – The user receives protection from mist, dust, vapors and liquid.

Before purchasing goggles for eye protection, try them on to make sure the face seal remains intact during wear.

Face shields

A quality face shield offers full-face protection against bloodborne, chemical or spraying hazards. Made from different transparent materials, face shields are available in varied thicknesses to match common workplace tasks and corresponding hazards.

Keep in mind that a face shield isn’t designed to be worn by itself. For maximum benefit, you should wear safety glasses or safety goggles in addition to a face shield. If particles somehow make their way under the shield, the glasses or goggles will still protect your eyes. And, if you lift the shield, your eyes will still be protected from most airborne hazards.

Specialized eye protection

If you’re a welder or you work with lasers, you may need a helmet or special filters on the lenses of your safety eyewear. Doing so protects your eyes from optical radiation and other dangers. In some cases, different types of protection may be worn together to further enhance eye safety.

Best lens materials for protective eyewear

Top-notch materials and quality construction should result in effective safety eyewear. No matter what type of eye protection your job requires, it’s not a good idea to forfeit quality to save a few bucks.

Below are the materials most commonly used in safety glasses lenses and other protective eyewear for the most reliable eye protection.

Polycarbonate lenses

Creating quality safety eyewear begins with top-tier lens materials. Polycarbonate lenses are an extremely popular choice because they are:

Lightweight – The material weighs considerably less than glass and regular plastic, so they are typically more comfortable and less likely to slip.

UV-blocking – Polycarbonate lenses provide 100% UVA-UVB protection to block the sun’s harmful rays.

Impact-resistant – Reinforced impact resistance against flying particles and other objects makes polycarbonate an effective material for impact safety glasses.

Because polycarbonate lenses are softer than glass lenses, they may scratch more easily — even if a scratch-resistant coating has been applied. As a result, polycarbonate safety glasses may require more careful handling.

Other lens materials

The following materials are also commonly used in safety eyewear:

Plastic (CR-39) – Plastic lenses offer good resistance to pitting and solvent contact, and weigh half as much as glass lenses.

Trivex – Trivex lenses offer roughly the same impact resistance as polycarbonate. They have better optical clarity than polycarbonate, but at a significantly higher price.

Hi-Vex – This material offers better impact resistance than CR-39 lenses and comes with many lens coating options.

Choose the right eye protection for you

According to OSHA, employers are responsible for their employees’ eye safety training and practice. Your designated safety officer should refer you to your workplace’s OSHA protective eyewear policy to ensure you and other employees have and use the appropriate gear.

The best way to protect your eyes at work will depend on your situation, whether you should opt for glasses with side shields, specialized eye protection for your specific needs, or safety goggles that fit over your regular glasses.

Most importantly:

Wear eye protection.

Ensure you’re wearing the right eye protection for the task at hand.

Once you have this covered, you’ll greatly reduce your chances of experiencing a workplace eye injury.

Why Safety Glasses Are Necessary: What You Need To Know

safety glasses

Whether it’s in the lab, at a construction site, or in any other industrial environment, safety glasses are an important piece of protective equipment. In this article, we’ll discuss why wearing them should be a priority at work and what you need to know before making your purchase.

Introduction

First of all, when it comes to safety in the workplace, there is no such thing as being too cautious. One of the best ways to protect your eyes from potential hazards is to wear safety glasses. Safety glasses are designed to protect your eyes from flying debris, harmful chemicals, and other potential dangers. They are a necessity for anyone working in an environment where there is a risk of eye injuries.

essay on safety glasses

Also, there are a variety of different types of safety glasses available, so it is important to choose a pair that meets your specific needs. And make sure to select a pair that fits comfortably and provides adequate coverage for your eyes. If you are unsure of which type to choose, consult with your employer or a safety specialist. They will be able to help you select a pair of glasses that will provide the best protection for your particular work environment.

What are Safety Glasses?

When it comes to protecting your eyesight, there is no such thing as being too careful. Whether you are working in a laboratory or out in the field, it is important to wear protective eyewear at all times.

Safety glasses are designed to protect your eyes from flying debris, harmful chemicals, and other potential hazards. And they are usually made from impact-resistant materials such as polycarbonate. Most polycarbonate safety glasses meet ANSI Z87.1 impact ratings. There are also some styles that are military ballistic rated from brands like Edge and Wiley X. They are worn by military, hunters, sport shooters, and police.

Some styles also have special coatings that help to protect your eyes from UV rays or blue light. And safety glasses with anti-fog lens coatings reduce fogging, allowing you to see clear in wet or humid work environments. And remember, if you work in an environment where there is a risk of eye injury, it is important to wear protective eyewear at all times. This will help you comply with US Federal OSHA safety standards.

Why Do You Need to Wear Safety Glasses at Work?

In addition, when it comes to safety in the workplace, there are a lot of different things that you need to take into consideration. One of the most important things that you need to do is to make sure that you are wearing the proper safety gear. And this includes things like gloves , helmets, and, of course, safety glasses.

essay on safety glasses

There are a lot of different reasons why you need to wear safety glasses at work. First of all, they can protect your eyes from flying debris or other hazardous materials. If something were to hit you in the eye, it could cause serious damage or even blindness. And they can help to prevent this from happening.

Another reason why you need to wear protective eyewear at work is that it can help to protect your vision from harmful UV rays. If you are working outdoors or in an area where there is a lot of sunlight, then you are at risk of damaging your eyesight. And wearing safety sunglasses can help reduce this risk.

Finally, wearing safety glasses can also help to reduce the risk of getting headaches or migraines. If you are constantly looking up at bright lights, or the blue light caused by computer and phone screens, then this can lead to tension headaches. Wearing safety glasses with yellow color lenses for instance can help filter low levels of blue light and enhance your vision in dull, overcast, or foggy conditions.

What Kind of Protection Do They Provide?

Most styles provide protection from flying debris, UV radiation, and chemical splash. They are made of impact-resistant polycarbonate material and have an anti-scratch coating to prolong their clarity. Many also feature side shields to protect your eyes from hazards at the periphery of your vision.

Different Types of Safety Glasses

There are many different types of safety glasses we offer. And each type of safety glass has its own unique features and benefits that make it ideal for different applications. Here is a look at some of the most popular types:

1. Clear Safety Glasses: Clear options are the most basic, affordable, and essential type of protective eyewear. They provide basic protection from dust, debris, and other potential hazards that may be present in your work environment. Clear safety glasses are typically worn in environments where there is a low risk of impact or injury. And some series like our own Full Source Spinyback start at 79 cents per pair.

2. Tinted Safety Glasses: Tinted options offer enhanced protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. They are ideal for outdoor work environments where glare can be a problem. Tinted safety glasses are also available in over a dozen different colors to help you stay visible in low-light conditions.

3. Mirror Safety Glasses: Mirror options offer the same protection as clear lens glasses with the added benefit of reduced glare. Mirror safety glasses are ideal for bright outdoor work environments where glare can be a problem. They are also available in a variety of colors and diminish glare by absorbing reflection across the mirror surface. And some of the best-selling mirror lens glasses are the CrossFire ES5 and Bullhead Maki.

4. Polarized Safety Glasses: Polarized options offer enhanced protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays while also reducing glare. These lenses help filter out bent light waves reducing glare, eye fatigue, and decreasing reflection off surfaces such as water, sand, and snow. And polarized safety glasses are ideal for outdoor work environments where glare can be a problem.

How to Find the Right Pair for Your Job

There are a few factors to consider when choosing the right pair for your job. The first is the type of work you’ll be doing. If you’re working with chemicals or other hazardous materials, you’ll need a different type of safety glass than if you’re working in a construction zone.

The second factor is the environment you’ll be working in. If you’re going to be outdoors , you’ll need a different type of safety glass than if you’re going to be indoors.

Finally, consider your personal preferences. Do you want frames that fit snugly against your face? Do you need them to be comfortable to wear for long periods of time? Is there a particular style or color I want to evoke?

Once you’ve considered all of these factors, you can feel confident about finding the best eye protection for your needs. Shop styles for men and women from our best-selling brands. And this includes MCR Safety, Bouton, Elvex, Bolle, and Radians. Our durable and stylish safety glasses also meet ANSI Z87.1 safety standards for the job site. And for even more selection, browse our safety sunglasses and safety goggles, ideal for a variety of jobs, work environments, and tasks.

In conclusion, safety glasses are an essential part of any workplace environment and should be worn by all employees. They protect eyes from hazardous materials or debris that can cause injury and even blindness. They also provide protection against UV radiation which can damage the eyes over time. To ensure the safety of workers, employers must ensure that their staff is wearing appropriate eyewear at all times while on the job. Taking these simple steps will help to create a safe work environment for everyone in your business.

The Ultimate Guide To Eye Protection

The Ultimate Guide To Eye Protection Header

Millions of people suffer eye injuries every year, many of which could be prevented by wearing the right eye protection. According to Prevent Blindness, over 700,000 Americans injure their eyes at work, and the use of  safety glasses   or goggles could reduce the severity of up to 90% of these injuries. Whether you need to protect your eyes at work or school or during sports or hobbies, use this guide to select the most effective safety eyewear.

man wearing safety glasses at work

The Main Types of Eye Protection

Every application calls for unique protective eyewear. When you set out to obtain eye protection, you should be aware of eye safety risks in a workplace or any other environment. Select glasses, goggles or more advanced combined ocular and respiratory personal protective equipment. Find out more about the most popular styles of protective eyewear and PPE.

Safety Glasses

Glasses are comfortable to wear at work or in school. Safety frames tend to resemble lifestyle or sports frames, but this eyewear may be designed to stand up to any of the following eye hazards:

  • Intense light
  • Particulate

Many protective frames are prescription-ready. Whether you require Rx or Plano safety eyewear, you should always check the rating of frames and lenses. Select glasses with a rating applicable to any hazards you have an elevated risk of encountering during wear.

In addition to descriptions of frame styles, markings on the inner side of lenses and frames indicate whether glasses meet basic impact, high-impact or other eye protection standards. Prescription lenses in safety eyewear bear distinctive markings such as the American National Standards Institute Z87-2 marking for lenses rated for basic impact and the Z87-2+ high-impact standard.

Protective Goggles

Goggles with a headband or strap provide a more secure fit and more complete eye protection. The design of the lenses in goggles provides superior top, bottom and side coverage. It may be more difficult to get goggles fitted with corrective lenses than glasses.

The cylindrical or spherical lenses of goggles can cause distortion when paired with powerful prescriptions. Look for goggles that accommodate your prescription or have lenses with a similar step diopter. Wearing goggles over contacts may be acceptable for some applications but can also increase the risk of eye injury in the event that contact occurs.

Wear goggles to protect your eyes from exposure to optical radiation such as intense forms of high-frequency visible, infrared or ultraviolet light. Goggles that have indirect or no ventilation are suitable for blocking chemical splashes, liquid droplets and impact hazards.

Full-Face Respirators

A full-face respirator is an advanced form of PPE that combines respiratory and eye protection. This piece of equipment provides more protection for the nose, mouth and eyes than masks, N95 respirators, or half-mask respirators.

A full-face respirator can keep wearers from exposure to infectious diseases transmitted through the air or by blood droplets or spatters as well as dust, particulate and chemical vapors. The cartridge you put in a mask determines the level of protection a respirator provides, from dust filtration to organic vapor or acid gas. Choose from elastomeric or powered air-purifying designs.

Welding Helmets

If you do any type of welding, you should layer a welding helmet over protective eyewear to avoid photokeratitis or welder’s flash and other ocular damage. This occupational PPE comes in a full range of tint densities to protect your eyes for a full range of tasks. Shades from 1.5 to 3 are suitable for torch soldering, while darker shades are preferable for torch brazing, cutting or gas welding. Electric arc welding calls for lenses in shades 10 to 14 worn under a protective helmet.

Protection From Potential Hazards

The hazards to which eyes are exposed to vary based on the environment. The ANSI Z87.1 standard covers protection from basic and high-impact hazards. The following markings are used to identify protection levels:

  • Z-87 for basic impact
  • Z-87+ or Z87-2+ for high impact
  • D and number for droplets and dust
  • R and scale number for infrared light
  • U and scale number for ultraviolet light
  • W and shade number for welding

Select frames and lenses or goggles with an appropriate safety rating to protect eyes from known risks. Make sure that corrective eyewear meets all relevant standards. If you require eyewear with special or photochromic lenses, look for glasses or goggles with these features and either an S or V lens marking.

Eye Protection and PPE

Eye protection is an important piece of PPE, but glasses and goggles do not provide complete protection. Your head, face and the rest of your body may also be exposed to hazards that require the use of PPE such as protective garments, respirators, gloves and hearing protection.

Depending on your work environment or other activities, you may need to combine glasses or goggles with a mask, face shield or half-face respirator or wear a full-face respirator to protect your eyes, nose and mouth. Make sure that other PPE is designed to be worn with safety eyewear.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Eye Protection

Whether you choose to wear glasses or goggles for safety, it is important to maintain protective eyewear. Regular cleaning can keep lenses clean and clear for optimal visual clarity.

Depending on lens materials and coatings, you may need to use certain cleaning solutions or cloths to prevent scratches and premature wear of anti-fog or other lens coatings. Shatterproof polycarbonate lenses are prone to develop scratches that can undermine your quality of sight and provide less protection from harmful ultraviolet rays and other intense light.

If you wear eyewear in an area with contamination or infection risks, disinfection will also be necessary. Use an approved cleaning solution and process eyewear with other soiled equipment. Physically clean PPE while wearing gloves and any other protection necessary to minimize the risk of exposure.

How do I choose the right eye protection?

Assess the eye safety hazards in a workplace or any other environment. Depending on the application and risks, you may require glasses or goggles rated for specific hazards or additional protection such as a respirator or welding helmet. Make sure that any PPE you select meets the applicable safety standards.

What are the best safety frames and lenses?

The best protective eyewear is rated for a relevant application or use and fits your face. Depending on whether you need vision correction, you can customize eyewear with prescription lenses. Frames and lenses should provide physical protection for eyes while improving your ability to see clearly in potentially hazardous surroundings.

Are goggles better for eye safety than glasses?

Goggles provide more protection than safety glasses. Even wraparound frames do not completely cover the top and bottom of the eye and protect the socket bone structure. You can find goggles rated to shield eyes from bright light, chemicals, dust, impact and liquid hazards. Venting affects the level of protection.

How do I determine which PPE I need?

You may require a combination of eye, respiratory or hearing safety gear for certain activities. Consider your chances of exposure to known risks such as high-intensity light, contaminants or pathogens. Consult safety resources to confirm that you have an adequate level of head, face and body protection for any application.

What standards are used to rate PPE?

The leading safety standards for PPE are maintained by independent standards bodies such as ANSI and ASTM International. In the United States, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration maintains standards for PPE intended for workplace wear. Other countries have different safety standards in place for protective equipment for workers.

Strategies for Conserving the Supply of Eye Protection

Conventional capacity strategies.

Use eye protection according to product labeling and local, state, and federal requirements In healthcare settings, eye protection is used by healthcare personnel (HCP) to protect their eyes from exposure to splashes, sprays, splatter, and respiratory secretions. Single use eye protection should be removed and discarded. Reusable eye protection should be cleaned and disinfected after each patient encounter.

Transition eye protection supplies from disposable (i.e., single use) to reusable devices (i.e., reusable face shields or goggles)

  • When both respiratory and eye protections are needed, consider preferential use of powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs) or full facepiece elastomeric respirators which have built-in eye protection.
  • Ensure appropriate cleaning and disinfection after each use if reusable face shields or goggles are used.

Contingency Capacity Strategies

Implement extended use of eye protection Extended use of eye protection is the practice of wearing the same eye protection for repeated close contact encounters with several different patients, without removing eye protection between patient encounters. Extended use of eye protection can be applied to single use and reusable devices.

  • Reusable eye protection should be cleaned and disinfected according to manufacturer instructions whenever it is removed and if it becomes visibly soiled or difficult to see through during use. Single-use eye protection should be discarded after removal unless also implementing reuse as a Crisis Capacity Strategy (see below).
  • Eye protection should be discarded if damaged (e.g., face shield or goggles can no longer fasten securely to the provider, if visibility is obscured and cleaning and disinfecting does not restore visibility).
  • HCP should take care not to touch their eye protection. If they touch or adjust their eye protection, they must immediately perform hand hygiene.
  • HCP should leave the patient care area if they need to remove their eye protection.

Crisis Capacity Strategies

Use eye protection devices beyond the designated shelf life during patient care activities If there is no date available on the eye protection device label or packaging, facilities should contact the manufacturer. The user should visually inspect the product prior to use and, if there are concerns (such as degraded materials), discard the product.

Re-use disposable (single use) eye protection It may be possible to re-use disposable (or single use) eye protection during severe shortages. However, it is possible that the integrity of the single use eye protection may be degraded after multiple uses or following contact with cleaners or disinfectants. If implementing reuse, disposable eye protection should be dedicated to one HCP and appropriate cleaning and disinfection should be performed after each use and if it becomes visibly soiled or difficult to see through during use. Eye protection should be discarded if damaged (e.g., face shield or goggles can no longer fasten securely to the provider, if visibility is obscured and cleaning and disinfecting does not restore visibility)..

Protocol for removing, cleaning, and disinfecting eye protection when manufacturer instructions are unavailable When manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfection are unavailable, such as for single use disposable face shields or goggles, consider the following process:

  • While wearing a clean pair of gloves, carefully wipe the inside, followed by the outside of the face shield or goggles using a clean cloth saturated with neutral detergent solution or a cleaner wipe.
  • Carefully wipe the outside of the face shield or goggles using a wipe or clean cloth saturated with hospital disinfectant solution. Follow disinfectant product label instructions for safety precautions, concentration, and contact time.
  • Wipe the outside of the face shield or goggles with clean water or alcohol to remove residue.
  • Fully dry (air dry or use clean absorbent towels).
  • Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene.
  • Store cleaned and disinfected eye protection onsite, in a designated clean area within the facility.

Prioritize eye protection for selected activities such as:

  • Essential surgeries and procedures for which eye protection is recommended.
  • During care activities where splashes and sprays are anticipated.
  • During unavoidable activities with prolonged face-to-face or close contact with a potentially infectious patient for which eye protection is recommended.

Consider using safety glasses (e.g., trauma glasses) that have extensions to cover the side of the eyes

  • However, protective eyewear (e.g., safety glasses, trauma glasses) with gaps between glasses and the face likely do not protect eyes from all splashes and sprays.

Protect your eyes while working

eye-safety.jpg

Every day, about 2,000 U.S. workers injure their eyes severely enough to need medical treatment, according to NIOSH. With May being Healthy Vision Month, let’s take a look at how workers can protect their eyes.

Why are workers getting eye injuries?

“Workers experience eye injuries on the job for two major reasons,” the American Optometric Association says. “They were not wearing proper eye protection or they were wearing the wrong kind of protection for the job.”

As a result, eyes can get scraped or struck, penetrated, or burned, NIOSH warns. That’s why it’s important to make sure workers are wearing eye protection, such as goggles, faceshields, safety glasses or a full-face respirator.

“Eye protection should be fit to an individual or adjustable to provide appropriate coverage,” the agency says. “It should be comfortable and allow for sufficient peripheral vision.”

Tips for prevention

When it comes to preventing eye injuries in the workplace, NIOSH has the following advice for employers:

  • Ensure engineering controls, such as machine guards and work screens, are used.
  • Conduct a hazard assessment to determine the appropriate type of eyewear for a given task, and then make sure workers have access to the eyewear.

Need help determining what constitutes “appropriate” eyewear? AOA has recommendations:

  • If you’re working in an area that has particles, flying objects or dust: Wear safety glasses with side protection (side shields).
  • If you’re working with chemicals: Wear goggles.
  • If you’re working near hazardous radiation (welding, lasers or fiber optics): Wear special-purpose safety glasses, goggles, faceshields or helmets designed for that task.

Safety Glass Physics

Safety glass is an amazing invention, one that has saved many lives. Glass is usually very brittle as a result of its chemical properties, such that it is easily cracked and broken, often times leading to very sharp edges. Safety glass fixes this problem by adding in compression on the outside layer of glass, meaning any force that attempts to break it must overcome the compressive force in addition to the glasses usual strength. However, in order to create this compression, there must be tensile (the opposite of compression) force on the interior of the glass because of the laws of physics. So whenever there is enough damage to reach this tensile area, the glass will explode, with all the unbalanced forces causing the glass to disintegrate

After years of economic struggle, Alabama Governor Don Siegelman was convicted, along with Chief of Healthsouth Richard Scrushy of fraud. While being charged of lying about millions of dollars of Healthsouth’s finances, they were in the middle of building a new location. Prescription Safety Glasses

Prescription safety glasses are the answer for anyone who wears prescription glasses and requires safety glasses. However, finding the right prescription safety glasses can be a bit of a challenge. Most optometrists don't stock this type of protective eyewear. Many online sites offer prescription safety glasses. However, the key here is to make sure that you are purchasing from a reputable safety glass providers.

Who Is The Protagonist In Entering Glass

If you are waiting for approval to live your life, I am sorry none is forthcoming. In the book “Shattering Glass” by Gale Giles, the author demonstrates how individuals will follow others who they look up to even when they are involved in questionable activities, showing this through the actions of the characters throughout the story.e. It's through the use of Rob that the author shows what people are willing to do when they are manipulated using their own desires. The three main reasons for why the characters followed Rob was to feel a part of something bigger, to help someone, and to be able to accomplish their goals

Essay On The Glass Escalator

Using the concept of the “glass escalator” (Ridnor,7 ), the “no sissy stuff” (Ridnor, 5), and “theoretical perspective” (Macionis, 15) (Ridnor, 2) such as “functionalist” (Macionis,16) (Ridnor, 2) perspective, and “conflict theorist” (Macionis, 17) (Ridnor, 2-3) perspective from lectures. Shattered Glass

The thing that seems to be driving Stephen Glass is becoming a famous writer. Eventually writing something could get him a Pulitzer Prize. His life goals were to finish law school while working at “The New Republic” and rise to fame to get a Pulitzer-award (Ray, “Shattered Glass”). Stephen Glass says at the end of the film, “ You have to know who you’re writing for and you have to know what you’re good at. I record what people do. I find out what moves them, what scares them, and I write that down. That way they’re the ones telling the story. And you know what? Those kinds of pieces can win Pulitzer Prizes too” (Ray, “Shattered Glass”). He also knew that he was under a great deal of stress with both work and school that was a weakness for him. His other weakness was that he was dishonest with his peers about his work, which ended up getting him fired.

The Glass Ceiling And Glass Escalator

Gender roles are socially constructed rules that dictate the types of acceptable behaviors based on sex. In modern society, gender roles continue to hinder the progress of equality between a man and a woman. A man and woman’s acceptable role in a 1960s American society is clearly portrayed in the episode of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (2007), written by Matthew Wieners, of the series Mad Men. The episode illustrates the concepts of the glass ceiling and glass escalator, and how these concepts affect home and work life for two women: Peggy Olson, one who plays by her gender role, and Rachel Menken, one who breaks free of her gender role.

Summary Of The Story 'The Glass Castle'

In my opinion the main conflict in the story of The Glass Castle was a man vs. man situation. The reason being that I’m saying it is because in the story Jeanette Bivens has weird, dysfunctional, and unstable parents and she just wants to have a good life. Jeanette truly loves her parents but, she sometimes wants to leave them and be by herself. Jeanette being the protagonist during the whole story she deals with her dysfunctional controlling environment. In the story she pushes forward and thinks positive throughout the story.

Blown Glass

What is abstract blown glass art? This seems like such a simple question, but it really is not simple to answer. Blown glass basically means that the glass was crafted into a specific form by a glassblower. Abstract art is said to have come from many different movements, including expressionism. This type of art can come in many different forms, including computer generation art, painting, sculpting, and glass blowing. Abstract art basically means that the end result does not have a face, so it is somewhat unrecognizable.

Safelite Auto glass introduction of the proposed PPP plan to increase the productivity of the installers is going to bring more problems for the organization. One of the major reasons for this is the decrease of the technicians guarantee rate by 30% after 12 week period. This plan will increase the already existing turnover rate even higher. The problem with the PPP rate is that not all technicians will get the opportunity to increase their productivity. The first reason for this is the varying demand for the windshield around the year, during winter the demand is less which in turn provides less number of jobs per day for the technicians which can be less than the targeted PPP rate. So if the

An Overview Glass Of Glass

One of the most used materials in human history is glass or more specifically silicate glass. Although some types of glasses are called crystal glass, glass is actually an amorphous solid and does not have a crystal structure. It is used in all walks of life ranging from homes to automobiles to laboratories. Historically, the one of the first types of glass that was used by humans to make tools and weapons was the volcanic glass known as obsidian. As for manmade glass, the earliest accounts date back to 5000 BC in the middle east. Primitive methods of glass making were used until about 100BC, when glassblowing was believed to be discovered. This discovery made glass products popular in the Roman Empire since the development of glassblowing allowed glass production to be more efficient and thus less expensive. As the centuries went on more techniques were developed which eventually lead to glass products being widespread. This paper will discuss some of the methods of glass production throughout history, the types of silicate glass, and the different ways that glass can be colored.
