Who Is Johnny Depp?

Actor Johnny Depp is a three-time Academy Award nominee known for his starring role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as well as parts in films such as Edward Scissorhands , Sleepy Hollow , Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street , and Alice in Wonderland . Depp landed his first movie role in the 1984 horror film Nightmare on Elm Street and rose to prominence a few years later when he began playing Tommy Hanson on the TV show 21 Jump Street . One of the most bankable actors in cinema, his once steady career stalled in the late 2010s after ex-wife Amber Heard alleged the actor physically and verbally abused her. Their subsequent defamation trial in 2022 garnered widespread attention.

FULL NAME: John Christopher Depp II BORN: June 9, 1963 BIRTHPLACE: Owensboro, Kentucky SPOUSES: Lori Allison (1983-1985) and Amber Heard (2015-2017) CHILDREN: Lily-Rose Melody Depp and John Christopher Depp III ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Gemini

Johnny Depp was born John Christopher Depp II, in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963, to parents John and Betty Sue Depp. Depp’s father worked as a civil engineer, and his mother worked as a waiter and homemaker. The youngest of four children, Johnny was withdrawn and a self-admitted oddball.

The family moved frequently to accommodate John’s job, finally landing in Miramar, Florida, when Johnny was 7 years old. They lived in a motel for nearly a year, until John found a job. Johnny hated his new home and, by the age of 12, began smoking, experimenting with drugs, and engaging in self-harm due to the stress of family problems.

In 1978, when Johnny was 15, his parents got divorced. It became Johnny’s job to go to his father’s office and pick up the weekly child-support money. The split caused a rift between Johnny and his father.

At 16, Johnny dropped out of high school and joined a garage band called the Kids. The group became successful enough to open for the Talking Heads and the B-52s, but they barely made ends meet. Johnny lived for months in a friend’s ’67 Chevy Impala.

In 1983, at the age of 20, Depp met and married 25-year-old makeup artist Lori Allison. That same year, the couple moved to Los Angeles with Depp’s band in the hopes of striking it big. Still living on a shoestring budget, Depp and his bandmates supported themselves by selling pens for a telemarketing firm.

A year later, Depp fell into acting when his wife introduced him to her ex-boyfriend, actor Nicolas Cage . Cage saw potential in Depp and introduced the hopeful musician to a Hollywood agent. After several small roles as an extra, Depp landed his first legitimate movie role in the horror film Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

By 1985, the Kids had broken up—and so had Depp’s marriage. After his split with Allison, Depp struck up a relationship with actor Sherilyn Fenn, whom he met on the set of the short film Dummies (1985). They were briefly engaged but split before marrying. After their break-up, Depp then met and proposed to actor Jennifer Grey ; their romance was also short-lived.

Depp started to study acting in earnest, first in classes at the Loft Studio in Los Angeles and then with a private coach. The lessons paid off in 1987 when he replaced actor Jeff Yagher in the role of undercover cop Tommy Hanson in the popular Canadian-filmed television series 21 Jump Street . The role thrust Depp into almost immediate stardom; he became a teen idol overnight, though he resented that label. He told The Telegraph in a 2006 interview he felt the show grew stagnant as it progressed: “It just started to become false. It started to become this action-packed can of soup, you know? You just market it and send it out.” The actor reportedly tried to get fired from the role, even trashing his trailer.

When his contract on Jump Street expired in 1989, Depp leaped at the opportunity to pursue weightier roles. (In the 2012 film adaptation of the TV series, which starred Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill , Depp had an uncredited cameo as Tommy Hanson.)

In 1990, Depp starred in the John Waters ’50s-kitsch musical Cry-Baby , which became a cult hit and succeeded in changing his image. That same year, he received an opportunity to exhibit his versatility as an actor in the titular role of Tim Burton ’s fantasy film Edward Scissorhands . The movie not only established Depp as an A-list actor, but it also grossed more than $54 million at the box office. Following the film’s success, Depp carved a niche for himself as a serious, somewhat dark, idiosyncratic performer, consistently selecting roles that surprise critics and audiences alike.

During shooting for Edward Scissorhands , Depp met co-star Winona Ryder , whom he’d been eyeing since a brief meeting at the premiere for her film Great Balls of Fire the previous year. The two began dating on the set and soon became a Hollywood power couple. Five months after their first date, Depp and Ryder became engaged. To solidify their love, Depp even had “Winona Forever” tattooed on his right arm. The couple split, however, in 1993, and Depp had the tattoo changed to “Wino Forever.”

Outside of his personal life, Depp continued to flourish, gaining critical acclaim and increasing popularity for his work. Two of notable roles from this time include the social misanthrope Sam in Benny & Joon (1993), which earned him a Golden Globe nod, and Gilbert in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993), which cast him as a young man dissatisfied with the confines of his small-town life.

In August 1993, Depp and two business partners bought The Viper Club in Los Angeles, which instantly became the hippest spot on the Sunset Strip. Depp began using the club as an opportunity to introduce patrons to music from his newly formed band P, which offered popular shows at the venue. But tragedy hit the club on October 31 of that year, when teen heartthrob and critically acclaimed actor River Phoenix suffered a drug overdose outside the club. Phoenix died later that evening.

Depp also dabbled with drugs and spiraled into a deep depression. Around this time, he started a very public relationship with supermodel Kate Moss . Depp and Moss constantly made headlines for their passionate and unpredictable behavior; in 1994, Depp famously trashed a New York hotel room after one of the couple’s many fights.

Depp’s wild behavior didn’t seem to have an effect on his professional life, as he enjoyed a steady stream of work. In 1994, he reteamed with Burton in the biopic Ed Wood , about the infamous B-movie director. The film won Depp critical acclaim and another Golden Globe nomination. His next major movie was 1997’s Donnie Brasco , which featured Depp as an undercover FBI agent seeking to infiltrate the Bonano crime family.

In 1998, Depp split from longtime girlfriend Moss and took the role of journalist Hunter S. Thompson ’s alter ego in Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . During filming, Depp cultivated a strong friendship with Thompson, which lasted until Thompson’s death in 2005. Depp would later finance the writer’s funeral.

Rounding out the ’90s, Depp teamed up with Burton once again on Sleepy Hollow , starring as the prim and driven Ichabod Crane.

The turn of the millennium marked the start of a prolific—and especially successful—period in Depp’s career. He appeared in the small but popular romantic drama Chocolat in 2000, followed by a big-budget role as real-life cocaine kingpin George Jung in Blow in 2001.

In 2003, Depp earned an Academy Award nomination for his starring role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the family adventure Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl . The film was a box-office smash, fueling the creation of the Pirates franchise. The 2006 sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest , broke a box-office record in reaching the highest weekend tally ever. The third installment fared well, too: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End was released on Memorial Day weekend in 2007, bringing in $138.8 million. Two additional installments were released in 2011 and 2017, with Depp once again roving the high seas as Sparrow.

As the Pirates film series took off, Depp continued working across genres. In 2004, he turned in a critically acclaimed performance in Finding Neverland , in which he starred as Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie . The film earned him more than 10 award nominations, including both Academy and Golden Globe nods.

Next, Depp played fictional candymaker Willy Wonka in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , an adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel of the same name.

Depp then took on one of theater’s most notorious characters in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). Directed by Burton and co-starring Helena Bonham Carter, the dark and gory musical tells the tale of a barber who kills his customers before seeing them turned into pies by his downstairs neighbor. Depp netted a Golden Globe Award for his work on the film.

His next box office success was another film adaptation, this time of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland . For the project, Depp again teamed up with Burton to take on the character of the Mad Hatter. The 2010 film, starring Mia Wasikowska as Alice, brought in more than $116 million in its opening weekend.

In the Burton comedy Dark Shadows (2012), Depp played Barnabas Collins, a vampire who escapes imprisonment and returns to his family home. There, Collins tries to help his descendants played by Michelle Pfeiffer , Chloë Grace Moretz, and Jonny Lee Miller. Depp was a longtime fan of the film’s source material—the late 1960s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows —and encouraged Burton to bring it to the big screen.

Unfortunately, Depp’s next big-budget endeavor didn’t fare nearly as well as his earlier films. In 2013, the A-list actor teamed up with Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer once again in the Disney film The Lone Ranger . The film, which cost more than $215 million to produce, performed poorly at the box office and received lackluster reviews.

Depp then took on the role of notorious crime boss Whitey Bulger in the 2015 biopic Black Mass . In 2016, Depp reprised his role as the Mad Hatter in Burton’s Through The Looking Glass , based on Carroll’s sequel to Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland . The following year, he joined the ensemble cast for an adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express .

In 2018, Depp jumped into another major feature film franchise with the part of evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald , after briefly appearing in the first installment Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016).

While filming the sci-fi drama The Ninth Gate (1999) in France, Johnny met French actor, singer, and model Vanessa Paradis. Paradis became pregnant with the couple’s first child later that year. In May 1999, the couple welcomed daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp. Depp and Paradis had their second child, son John Christopher “Jack” Depp III, three years later.

Lily-Rose Depp became a model for Chanel at age 15 and, like her father, jumped into acting. She made her first film appearance in the 2014 horror-comedy Tusk, which also featured Johnny, and also had parts in Planetarium (2016), The King (2019), Voyagers (2021), and Crisis (2021). She received a starring role in the HBO series The Idol , debuting in June 2023.

Jack Depp has largely stayed out of the public eye and shares a close bond with sister Lily-Rose. The siblings are bilingual and, according to a 2021 article by Interview , often spoke French in school to share secrets and conversations. His father has noted Jack’s artistic streak, saying Jack can draw very well and started his own band.

In 2012, stories began to circulate that Johnny Depp and Paradis had split up. Depp initially denied these rumors, but his representative confirmed the couple’s break-up that June. Depp and Paradis had been together for nearly 14 years when they split.

Depp met another future love interest on the set of a film while still publicly involved with Paradis. While filming The Rum Diary (2011) , he met co-star Amber Heard. The couple was seen publicly together for the first time in 2012, not long after Depp’s split with Paradis. Depp and Heard got engaged on Christmas Eve in 2013 and tied the knot in February 2015.

Heard filed for divorce in May 2016, and shortly afterward, she also filed a restraining order, alleging that Depp had been verbally and physically abusive. The two reached a settlement that August, and the divorce was finalized in January 2017. However, their legal entanglements were far from over.

After Heard penned an opinion article in December 2018 that described her experiences with domestic violence, Depp filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife a few months later. Heard subsequently countersued Depp for defamation after one of his lawyers called the allegations a “hoax.”

Their trial began on April 11, 2022, and garnered national attention. During testimony, Heard described instances of alleged abuse by Depp, including a “cavity search” he performed on her while looking for cocaine. Depp claimed Heard instigated arguments and escalated their feuds. He called the most severe accusations “all false.”

On June 1, 2022, a jury ruled in favor of Depp in the defamation lawsuit, requiring Heard to pay $15 million in punitive damages, which a judge capped at $10.35 million based on legal limits. The jury also ruled in favor of Heard’s counterclaim that she was defamed by Depp’s lawyer, requiring Depp to pay $2 million in damages.

Both sides appealed aspects of the jury’s decision and announced in December 2022 they had decided to settle the respective defamation suits for $1 million. Multiple outlets reported in June 2023 that Depp plans to donate the money to five charities.

Depp faced other legal troubles in the late 2010s, too. In October 2017, he filed a $25 million lawsuit against his former business managers, claiming they mismanaged $650 million of his earnings from the previous two decades. The following April, Depp was on the other end of a lawsuit, with two former personal security guards suing him for unpaid wages and their exposure to dangerous work conditions.

In July 2018, it was reported that Depp was being sued for allegedly hitting a location manager on the set of his upcoming film City of Lies , about the murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G . According to the suit, the movie star grew irate when told that production was finished for the day, at which point he twice “forcefully punched” the location manager in the lower left side of his rib cage and unleashed a verbal tirade until being dragged away by his bodyguards. As a result, the movie was pulled from distribution a month before its scheduled September 7 release date. Depp settled the suit in July 2022 before it went to trial.

Amid his public battle with Heard, Depp’s film roles declined in quantity and notoriety. He was asked to resign from the Fantastic Beasts franchise by Warner Brothers in November 2020, and Mads Mikkelsen was recast as Gellert Grindelwald for the series’ third installment. Depp had only one part each in 2019 and 2020, as well as some voice acting work.

Depp’s first major film role following the defamation trial was as French King Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry . The film premiered at the annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, with Depp receiving a warm reception from fans and a standing ovation at the film’s conclusion. Others believed Depp shouldn’t have been invited to the event given Heard’s allegations.

Depp told reporters at the festival that although he desired to continue working in film, he didn’t have “much further need for Hollywood” and admitted to feeling boycotted during his legal saga. He reportedly sought funding for his next project , a biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

As of May 2023, Celebrity Net Worth estimates Depp has a net worth around $150 million. According to film revenue database The Numbers, movies featuring Depp as a leading actor have collectively grossed just shy of $8.3 billion at the domestic and international box offices. Factor in his roles as part of a leading ensemble, and Depp ranks No. 12 among the most bankable actors ever at the worldwide box office.

In addition to his acting talents, Depp is an amateur musician. He predominantly plays guitar but also sings backup and plays keyboard. As a teenager, Depp was in a garage band called the Kids. In the 1990s, his newly formed band called P often performed at The Viper Club in Los Angeles.

His most recent musical venture—notable for its big-name talent—is the rock band Hollywood Vampires. Depp helped form the band in the early-to-mid 2010s, alongside Joe Perry of Aerosmith , Alice Cooper , and Tommy Henriksen. The group is named after a celebrity drinking club formed by Cooper in the 1970s, which included Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. The group has released two studio albums, including their self-titled 2015 album that featured artists such as Dave Grohl , Paul McCartney , and Joe Walsh.

Biography by AllMovie

Initially known as a teen idol thanks to his role on 21 Jump Street and tortured pretty-boy looks, Johnny Depp survived the perils of adolescent heartthrob status to earn a reputation as a respected adult actor. His numerous collaborations with director Tim Burton, as well as solid performances in a number of critically acclaimed films, have allowed Depp to carve a niche for himself as a serious, if idiosyncratic performer, a real-life role that has continuously surprised critics intent on writing him off as just another photogenic Tiger Beat casualty.

Born in Kentucky and raised in Florida,Depp had the kind of upbringing that would readily lend itself to his future portrayals of brooding lost boys. After his parents divorced when he was 16, he dropped out of school a year later in the hopes of making his way in the world as a musician. Depp fronted a series of garage bands; the most successful of these, the Kids, was once the opening act for Iggy Pop. During slack times in the music business, Depp sold pens by phone. He got introduced to acting after a visit to L.A. with his former wife, who introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who encouraged Depp to give it a try. The young actor made his film debut in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street (years after attaining stardom, Depp sentimentally played a cameo in the last of the Elm Street series), and his climb to fame was accelerated in 1987, when he replaced Jeff Yagher in the role of Officer Tom Hanson, a cop assigned to do undercover duty by posing as a student in crime-ridden Los Angeles-area high schools, in the Canadian-filmed Fox TV series 21 Jump Street (1987-90). Biding his time in "teen heartthrob" roles, Depp was first given a chance to exhibit his exhausting versatility in the title role of Tim Burton's fantasy Edward Scissorhands (1990).

Following the success of Edward Scissorhands, the actor made a conscious effort never to repeat himself. He continued to gain critical acclaim and increasing popularity for his work, most notably in Benny & Joon (1993), What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Ed Wood and Dead Man. Depp continued to ascend the Hollywood ranks. He would continue to play quirky character roles, starring turn as Hunter S. Thompson's alter ego in Terry Gilliam's trippy adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), and teaming with Burton again to play a decidedly mincing Icabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow. Depp's charm still made him a natural romantic lead, however, as he proved in Chocolat.

In what was perhaps his most surprising departure since Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Depp shed his oftentimes angst-ridden persona for a role as flamboyant pirate Jack Sparrow in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean. Essaying the crusty role in the manner of a drunken, debauched rock star -- Depp publicly admitted Keith Richards was his inspiration -- the actor added a dose of off-kilter fun to an above-average summer thrill ride, and found himself with his biggest hit and first Oscar nomination ever.

The role effectively made Depp both a character actor and full-fledged leading man, and he would continue to appear in several films over the coming years that allowed him to star in large scale productions, playing decidedly quirky characters. Films like Secret Window, Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Public Enemies, and a slew of massively successful Pirates of the Caribbean sequels would prove again and again how taken audiences were with the star, always playing the hero, but with an unconventional twist.

Despite this massive success (or maybe as a result), Depp's career suffered a downswing after a string of critical and commercial flops. Films like The Tourist (opposite Angelina Jolie), Dark Shadows (a rare misstep with Tim Burton) and The Lone Ranger failed to connect with audiences and critics alike and left many to wonder when Depp's career would recover. He continued to have a strong presence in the film industry, though, and in 2016, reprised his role as the Mad Hatter in Alice Through the Looking Glass and began work on a fourth Pirates movie.

Johnny Depp is an American actor known for his leading portrayals in films such as Edward Scissorhands (1990), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (2003- 2017).

Who is Johnny Depp?

Johnny Depp made his first film debut in the 1984 American horror film Nightmare on Elm Street  directed by Wes Craven. The teen idol came in the spotlight after his role in the 1987 Canadian filmed television series 21 Jump Street . In 1990, he quit 21 Jump Street  and appeared in John Waters's Cry-Baby  and Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands .

Following this, Depp has made dynamic portrayals in the movies such as Dead Man (1995),  Donnie Brasco (1997), The Ninth Gat e (1999), and Blow (2001).

In 2003, he appeared in the action film Once Upon the Time in Mexico , directed by Robert Rodriguez. The same year, he starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in the big-budget Disney media franchise Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl .

Respiring the role of Sparrow, Depp appeared in other Pirates of the Caribbean series - Dead Man's Chest (2006),  At World's End  (2007), On Stranger Tides  (2011), and Dead Men Tell No Tales  (2017).

Depp was also acclaimed for his portrayal in the 2005 American musical fantasy film Charlie and the Chocolate factory . He was well-received as the voice actor of the groom in the animated tale Corpse Bride .

His other notable roles are, Alice in Wonderland  (2010), Dark Shadows (2012), The Lone Ranger (2013), Tusk  (2104), and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016). Depp was also seen as a part of, Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2019), and Minamata  (2020).

In his upcoming works, Depp will voice the character Johnny Puff in the animated series Puffins . Besides, he is cast in the movie Cities of Lies released on March 19, 2021.

Born on June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Johnny Depp is the youngest of the four children of John Christopher Depp and Elizabeth Betty Sue Depp. His father was a civil engineer by profession, and his mother a waitress and homemaker. Due to his father's work, Depp's family constantly relocated. They finally landed in Miramar, Florida, when he was seven years old.

When Depp was 12, he indulged in smoking and began experimenting with drugs to self-harm due to the stress out of his family problems. His parents got divorced in 1987. He used to collect the weekly child-support money at his father's office, but this ended up on bad terms with his father.

A year after his parent's divorce, he dropped out of high school to pursue his career in music. He became a member of The Kid, a garage band. The band became popular enough to open for the bands Talking Heads and B-52's.

Johnny Depp's stepfather Robert Palmer was his inspiration for his growth. He died in 2000. Johnny Depp's song 'As Bad As I am' was taken from the words of stepfather's toast.

About his stepfather, Johnny said, “He was this really cool guy. He was a bit of a rounder. He spent about half his life in prison, in Statesville Ill. And he had this toast. 'Here’s to you, as good as you are. Here’s to me, as bad as I am. You're still as good as you are, as bad as I am.'“

In 1983, Depp was married to a makeup artist, Lori Arrison, who later introduced him to her friend Nicolas Cage. Seeing potential in Depp, Cage further introduced him to the Hollywood agent. The unemployed musician who had never considered seeking a career in acting landed several small roles before taking up the lead in the 1984 horror film ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’.

Three years later, Depp divorced his wife, and his band also dispersed. In 1985, he met Sherilyn Fenn while filming the short film ‘Dummies’, but their relationship was also short-lived. Determined in acting, Depp studied acting in Los Angeles's Loft Studio and later with a private coach.

Career Start

After his acting lessons, he made his breakthrough role in the 1987 Canadian television series 21 Jump Street. Garnering him the immediate stardom, he became a prominent teen idol. Later in 1989, his contract with the film expired, and he pursued further eccentric roles in notable movies.

In 1990, he appeared in the film Cry-Baby . Later that year, he acted in the first of several collaborations with director Tim Burton in Edward Scissorhands . In 1993, Depp's Benny & Joon and What's Eating Gilbert Grape  were considered sleeper hits after the success of Edward Scissorhands.

Another notable film played by Depp is the 1995 film Don Juan DeMarco where he portrays a character who believes he is the famous fictional Don Juan. In 1997 he featured as an undercover FBI agent in the movie Donnie Brasco.

With The Astronaut's Wife in 1999, Depp tried a different genre, sci-fi horror. In the same year, he starred as a prim, powered Ichabod Crane in another Burton's film, Sleepy Hollow . The following year, he starred in the small but successful romantic drama Chocolat , followed by a big-budget appearance in Blow  in 2001 as real-life cocaine kingpin George Jung. In 2001, Depp starred in the horror film From Hell , and in 2002, he starred in Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico .

Platoon is a 1986 war drama written and directed by Oliver Stone. It was the first of a film series of Stone's Vietnam War films, which also includes Born on the Fourth of July released in 1989, and   Heaven & Earth released in 1993. The movie starred Johnny Depp as Lerner along with Tom Berenger as Sgt. Barnes, Charlie Sheen as Chris, Willem Dafoe as Sgt. Elias, Keith David as King, Kevin Dillon as Bunny, Forest Whitaker as Big Harold, and John C. McGinley as Sgt O’Neill.

The stars gathered for a reunion at Depp's Hollywood Hills house in Los Angeles in July 2017 to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

‘Edward Scissorhands’

Edward Scissorhands is a Tim Burton-directed American fantasy romantic movie released in December 1990. The movie was produced by Burton and Denise Di Novi and written by Caroline Thompson based on a scenario she and Burton wrote. Depp was chosen for the role of Edward Scissorhands by the film's director, Burton because he admired his performance in 21 Jump Street . It was the first collaboration between Depp and Burton.

The romantic drama follows Edward (played by Johnny Depp) who is an incomplete artificial humanoid, with scissor blades instead of hands. Then one day, he discovers a suburban family who shows him their world and falls in love with their young daughter Kim (played by Winona Ryder).

When the film was first released, it did not become an instant hit. According to a 2015 article from Variety , its appealing characters, unique love story, and mystical visuals eventually captivated the audience. Depp's performance as a bashful mechanical youngster abandoned half-finished by an elderly scientist is still recognized as one of his most famous parts, thanks to Oscar-nominated makeup by Stan Winston and Ve Neill.

‘What’s Eating Gilbert’s Grape?’

What's Eating Gilbert Grape , is a 1993 drama movie directed by Lasse Hallström and a screenplay written by Peter Hudges. The movie starred Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Darlene Cates, and Juliette Lewis. The movie follows the story of 24-year-old Gilbert (played by Depp), a grocery store employee in a rural Iowa hamlet who lives with his morbidly overweight mother (played by Cates) and mentally challenged younger brother Arnie(played by DiCaprio).

The film got favorable reviews, with many critics applauding Depp and DiCaprio's on-screen performances.  However, the movie did not do well at the box office when it debuted in December 1993, earning only $10 million.

Depp believed the movie was a modern Catcher in the Rye , written by J. D. Salinger. He connected with his character as Gilbert and agreed to work with the director, Hallström even before the script was even written, who was one of the first people who agreed to be part of Gilbert Grape .

'Captain Jack Sparrow'

In 2003, Depp starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl .' In 2004, he was nominated for the Best Actor category for his performance in the movie. The film was a box office success, resulting in the creation of the Pirates of the Caribbean  franchise. Depp returned to the role of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels Dead Man's Ches t (2006), At World's End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011), and Dead Men Say No Tales (2017), the greatest grossing films of all time.

Over the course of 14 years, Depp portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow in five films. The franchise has grossed over $4.5 billion at the movie office, making it the sixth most successful of all time.

Disney, on the other hand, is alleged to have put a stop to the actor's planned cameo in the next film.

It's unclear if the studio, which has never before cut relations with Depp, had any intentions to bring him back as Jack Sparrow.

The original film's author, Stuart Beattie, suggested confirming Depp's time as the character was finished in 2018, saying, "I think he's had a great run."

‘Corpse Bride’

Corpse Bride is an animated musical fantasy film directed by Mike Johnson and Tim Burton released in September 2005. The movie had a screenplay by John August, Caroline Thompson, and Pamela Pettler based on Burton and Carlos Grangel's characters. The story takes place in a fictional Victorian-era English village.

The main lead Victor Van Dort is voiced by Johnny Depp, and Emily, the titular bride, is voiced by Helena Bonham Carter.

‘Secret Window’

Secret Window is a 2004 psychological thriller movie featuring Johnny Depp and John Turturro in the lead. David Koepp wrote and directed the film, which was based on Stephen King's novel titled  Secret Window , Secret Garden . Columbia Pictures released the picture on 12 March 2004, to middling reactions and moderate commercial success.

The film follows the story of a successful writer, Mort Rainey, portrayed by Depp. He is stalked by a would-be writer in the midst of a difficult divorce with his wife Amy Rainey (played by Maria Bello) at his lonely lake cottage, alleging plagiarism.

Trivia about ‘Secret Window’

The director, Koepp intended stars Maria Bello and Timothy Hutton to look astonished and afraid in the moment where Depp barges in on them in the motel. Before Depp stepped in, he insisted them both lie in bed for fifteen minutes. When the screenplay called for them to be afraid, the production crew set up big speakers that blasted static noise. The lights in the room were also programmed to turn on when Depp entered the room, further shocking the artists.

Music Career

Before becoming an actor, Depp was a guitarist before, and he has since appeared in songs by Oasis, Aerosmith, Marilyn Manson,  Shane MacGowan, Iggy Pop, Vanessa Paradis, and The New Basement Tapes, among others. In 2012, he joined Manson on stage at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards.

Performing in music videos for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Lemonheads, Avril Lavigne, and Paul McCartney, Depp has also played guitar on the soundtracks of his films Chocolat and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. He was also a member of P in the 1990s, which included singer Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers, bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and guitarist Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols.

In 2015, Depp joined the supergroup Hollywood Vampires alongside Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, as well as Bruce Witkin, a former member of his 1980s band The Kids. In September 2015, Hollywood Vampires released their self-titled debut studio album. Eleven famous rock covers were included, as well as three original tracks (all co-written by Depp).

Making its live debut in September 2015 at The Roxy in Los Angeles, the band had since completed two global tours in 2016 and 2018. Rise, their second studio album, was released in June 2019 and features mostly original material, including Depp-written songs. Depp also sings a cover version of David Bowie's "Heroes" on the CD.

In 2020 Depp and guitarist Jeff Beck released a cover of John Lennon's "Isolation", and Depp announced that they would be releasing more music together in the future.

'Gelleert Grindelwald'

In 2016, Depp was also cast in a cameo role in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first episode of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

For more than a year, Depp had been plagued by news about his shattered marriage to actress Amber Heard, who claimed Depp had physically and verbally assaulted her on numerous occasions. Despite Heard's claims, many of Rowling's fans were outraged in late 2017 when Depp was due to star in the follow-up, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald , despite his cameo in 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Depp stated on Instagram on Nov. 6 that Warner Bros. has asked him to "resign" from playing Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts  picture, almost three years later. The actor wrote, "I respect and agree to that request." With a brief statement, Warner Bros. confirmed Depp's departure, thanking him for his contributions to the films and stating that "the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast."

'Minamata'

In 2020, Johnny Deep will star in Minamata , a film produced by HanWay Films and set to premiere at the forthcoming American Film Market.

The film will follow the reclusive Smith as he travels to Japan in the 1970s to complete a commission from Life editor Ralph Graves, following his renowned WWII exploits. He travels to Minamata with only his trusted Nikon camera to chronicle the Minamata sickness scandal, which involves the Chisso Corporation's irresponsible mercury poisoning and local police and government cover-ups. The victims' battle against the firm responsible for the environmental disaster has resulted in one of the largest settlements in history, with current Minamata illness sufferers still pursuing compensation in court.

According to the producer’s team, they spent time in Minamata meeting some of the victims and their relatives, and the film will be made with their help. Also having Depp portray the character Levitas was honored and he said, “Working with Johnny to give voice to those who have been silently suffering is a responsibility we do not take lightly. Much like Eugene Smith in 1971, we could not feel more privileged or humbled to be tasked with the mission of bringing this incredible story to the world.”

Upcoming Projects

Johnny Depp will voice the character Johnny Puff in a new animated series titled Puffins  from Italy's Iervolino Entertainment, which was founded by producer Andrea Iervolino and co-owned by Monika Bacardi.

Puffins will be a mobile-first, short-form toon series with 250 five-minute episodes following the exploits of a bunch of charming birds that serve the cunning walrus, Otto. Iervolino Entertainment said in a statement that it would promote positive messaging by weaving in issues such as gender and race equality, as well as environmental protection.

Depp has dated Winona Ryder, Kate Moss, and Vanessa Paradis from 1989 to 1993, from 1994 to 1998. (1998 to 2012). He later began dating Heard after meeting her on the production of 2009's "The Rum Diary."

But unfortunately, in the summer of 1993, the two split, and Winona's replacement blamed her age, saying that they are young and have grown apart.

Amber Heard

Depp met Heard at The Rum Diary in 2009. Heard. She and Depp began dating at the beginning of 2012. The same year, Depp and Paradis, the long-time partner, published their separation after 14 years.

In 2015 at a privately held ceremony in their home in LA,  Depp and Heard married people reporting photos after several years of date. Depp had two Paradis children: Lily-Rose (born 1999) and John Christopher (2002).

The marriage came to an end after Heard filed for divorce from Depp on 23 May 2016 and was also given an order to temporarily restrain the Oscar-nominated actor. She alleged that during her relationship, Depp physically abused her and usually stayed under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor told a British High Court Judge that he began using "at a very young age" during the first day of testifying in his libel case.

"My mother used to ask me to go and get her 'nerve pills' and I think I was around the age of 11 that it dawned on me that 'nerve pills' were calming her nerves, so I brought her her nerve pills and I took one and that began my drug use," he said.

Depp continued, "The only method I knew to numb the agony" was to use drugs and drink in his early years.

Depp, 57, then sued News Group Newspapers (NGN), the parent company of the U.K. tabloid The Sun, for libel over an article in which the actor was referred to as a "wife-beater" in relation to his previous marriage to actress Amber Heard. 'Endlessly Grateful': Johnny Depp Opens Up About Director Taking A Chance On Him In Jeanne Du Barry

Johnny Depp's first movie after the Amber Heard trial is the french drama Jeanne Du Barry.

Johnny Depp in Jeanne Du Barry

Johnny Depp started acting at a young age, so he's got a long resume full of beloved roles as a character actor. But most recently he's been synonymous with his relationship with Amber Heard , and their long, public legal battle. After the defamation case verdict was revealed, he largely stepped away from the industry. His first post-trial movie is a French drama titled Jeanne Du Barry , and he recently opened up about the director taking a chance on him, saying he was "endlessly grateful."

Depp's career was seemingly in jeopardy as a result of the Heard controversy, especially after he was fired at Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. He hasn't done any major Hollywood movies, but he returned to acting in Jeanne Du Barry . That movie is directed by Maïwenn, and Depp posted on Instagram about their collaboration, saying:

Endlessly grateful to the incomparable Maïwenn for choosing me as her King of France in Jeanne du Barry. Now playing across the UK & Ireland. JD.X

Given how much Depp's defamation case was covered on TV , it makes sense that he might want to spend some time away from the spotlight in Europe. But he's still an actor by trade, and he's seemingly happy to Maïwenn for allowing him to return to work with Jeanne du Barry . And the movie will soon be playing stateside, thanks to Fathom Events.

The trailer for Jeanne du Barry showed off Depp's French in a tense drama about desire and jealousy. Depp's sweet tribute to his director was shared to his whopping 28.7 million followers, and there are plenty of fans in the comments section who want to see the film for themselves. So it should be interesting to see how it performs as it hits more markets.

It's unclear if/when Johnny Depp will return to Hollywood for a major film project, but he's been exploring the industry in unique ways. In addition to Jeanne Du Barry , Depp is also directing a movie starring Robert De Niro . Still, there are certain fans who want to see him return to the role of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise .

The trajectory of Depp's comeback is still unknown. Shortly after the verdict was revealed he cameod in the VMAs , so it seemed like he was jumping right back in. But at the time of writing this story, he hasn't signed on to any acting projects in Hollywood. Depp has a ton of fans, but there will inevitably be naysayers if he does make a return, especially after the harrowing allegations of abuse made by Amber Heard while she was on the stand .

Jeanne Du Barry will be released in the United States on May 2nd courtesy of Fathom Events. In the meantime, check out the 2024 movie release dates to plan your next trip to the theater.

Johnny Depp

Johnny depp quick links.

Johnny Depp (born 9.6.1963) Johnny Depp is an American actor who has played a large number of high profile roles in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands.

Net worth:  Depp was reported to have a net worth of $350 million according to Celebrity Net Worth in 2013.

Childhood: Johnny was born to Betty Sue Palmer and John Christopher Depp in Owensboro, Kentucky. He has one brother and two sisters, one of whom (Christie) now works as his personal manager. Depp's family moved often throughout his childhood, though they eventually settled in Florida. Johnny Depp started to learn the guitar when he was 12 years old and played in a number of garage bands. He dropped out of school to play in a band named The Kids, who moved to Los Angeles and changed their name to Six Gun Method. Johnny Depp also worked with the band Rock City Angels and co-wrote 'Mary', which appeared on their album Young Man's Blues, released on Geffen Records.

Acting Career: In the early 1980s, Depp's wife at the time, Lori Anne Allison, introduced him to Nicolas Cage, who encouraged him to pursue an acting career. In 1987, Johnny Depp landed his first lead TV role in 21 Jump Street. He reportedly took the role because it meant that he would get to work with Frederic Forrest. Depp's friend Sal Jenco was also cast in the series. Johnny Depp first appeared in a feature film in 1984, when he appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street, playing one of Freddy Kruger's victims. In '86, he appeared in Oliver Stone's Platoon, which also starred Charlie Sheen and Willem Dafoe.

In 1990, Depp took the lead role in Edward Scissorhands. The film was directed by Tim Burton, with whom Depp would have a long-standing working relationship. The highly successful film also stars Winona Ryder and features music by Danny Elfman. In 1994, Burton cast him to play the title role in Ed Wood. Johnny Depp is a huge fan and a personal friend of the writer Hunter S Thompson. In 1998, he played the role of Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, adapted from the writer's autobiographical novel of the same name. When Thompson died, Johnny Depp paid for a large proportion of the funeral proceedings, in which Thompson's ashes were fired from a cannon in Aspen, Colorado. In 1999, Depp starred opposite Christina Ricci in another Burton movie, Sleepy Hollow.

In 2003, Johnny Depp starred in the first of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, The Curse of the Black Pearl. He plays the pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, whom he loosely based on Keith Richards (who makes a cameo appearance in the last film of the trilogy). The films also star Bill Nighy, Keira Knightley. He was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his role, which became hugely popular among the cinema-going public. The second film, Dead Man's Chest was released in 2006 and the third installment, At World's End was released in 2007. Depp was nominated for another Best Actor Oscar in 2004 for his portrayal of the author JM Barrie in Finding Neverland, which also starred Kate Winslet, Julie Christie and Dustin Hoffman. His next major project was playing Willie Wonka in the 2005 adaptation of the Roald Dahl children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Depp returned to working with Tim Burton in 2008, with the release of the musical version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon barber of Fleet Street. The music was scored by Steven Sondheim and the film also starred Helena Bonham-Carter. Depp won the Golden Globe Best Actor award (Musical or Comedy) for his performance in the film.

In 2007, Johnny Depp secured a deal with Warner Brothers to make a film version of Dark Shadows, the gothic soap opera that was shown on the ABC network from 1966-71. Along with Colin Farrell and Jude Law, Johnny Depp was chosen to play a transformation of Heath Ledger's character in the Terry Gilliam-directed The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Ledger's untimely death half-way through the film led to the re-casting of the character and all three of the actors chosen to take on the role have donated their salaries from the film to Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams' daughter Matilda. The following year, he played the role of the Mad Hatter alongside Mia Wasikowska in Tim Burton's 'Alice In Wonderland'. In 2011, he starred with Amber Heard in the drama 'The Rum Diary'. He's been known to play all sorts of unusual characters in his movies and stayed true to form by landing the role of Tonto in 2013's 'The Lone Ranger' opposite Armie Hammer. The following year, he played a scientist who's death allows him to be uploaded into a computer in 'Transcendence'.

Personal Life: Johnny was married to Lori Anne Allison for a couple of years in the 1980s. After they divorced, Depp was briefly engaged to Sherilyn Fenn, though they never married. He has also dated Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. Johnny Depp met his long-term partner, Vanessa Paradis whilst working on the film The Ninth Gate. They have two children together, Lily Rose Melody Depp (b.1999) and John Jack Christopher Depp III (b.2002). Johnny and Vanessa split in 2012, after which he begain dating Amber Heard. Johnny Depp Reportedly Axed From 'Pirates Of The Caribbean'

Depp's career-defining role as Captain Jack Sparrow may be at an end, as Disney plans a re-boot of the franchise.

Following a difficult few years in his personal and professional life, Johnny Depp has reportedly been ditched from the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise as Disney plans a significant re-boot of the series.

It’s the role that superstar Depp is arguably the most famous for, having held down the part of the colourful Captain Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean over the last 15 years. However, his last outing in 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales became the lowest-performing movie of the series in commercial terms.

Now, original Pirates scriptwriter Stuart Beattie has hinted in a new interview that Disney has decided to part ways with Depp as it seeks a major overhaul of the entire franchise.

Johnny Depp "Felt Bad" For J.K. Rowling Over 'Fantastic Beasts' Casting Furore

Johnny Depp Jk Rowling

Amid threats of a fan boycott, Rowling last year defended Depp's casting as the villain Grindelwald in the 'Fantastic Beasts' sequel.

Johnny Depp has addressed the controversy surrounding his casting in the forthcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel The Crimes of Grindelwald , saying he “felt bad” for J.K. Rowling as defended the decision to go with the actor in the light of domestic abuse allegations against the actor.

Back in December last year, the Harry Potter author Rowling – of whose book and film series the Fantastic Beasts movies are a spin-off – justified Depp’s inclusion in the films, despite the allegations of physical abuse made by his ex-wife Amber Heard during their bitter divorce proceedings in 2016.

“The film-makers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but [are] genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies,” the author had said ten months ago, adding that re-casting his part as the villain Grindelwald had “naturally” been considered.

Johnny Depp Speaks About Amber Heard Domestic Abuse Allegations

Johnny Depp Amber Heard

Depp spoke to British GQ about the allegations, and the impact they had on his reputation and his family.

A couple of years after the court case was settled, Johnny Depp has broken his silence over Amber Heard ’s allegations that he physically abused her during their marriage.

The 55 year old Pirates of the Caribbean star was reported to have lashed out on numerous occasions against Amber, 32, soon after she filed for divorce following 15 months of marriage in May 2016.

These aspects of the case were settled out of court, but in a new interview, Depp insisted the allegations against him, including an incident in which he was said to have hit Heard with an iPhone, “couldn’t even sound” like something he’d do.

Johnny Depp Sued By Film Crew Member For Alleged Physical Assault

Location manager Greg 'Rocky' Brooks claims that Depp verbally and physically assaulted him while they were working on 'City Of Lies'.

Johnny Depp is the subject of a lawsuit from a crew member on a film he has been shooting, who alleges that the star physically and verbally assaulted him.

Location manager Grey ‘Rocky’ Brooks is suing Depp, as well as the director and producers of upcoming Notorious B.I.G. film City of Lies , for unspecified damages in the lawsuit filed last week on July 6th in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The documents claim that 55 year old Depp subjected Brooks to a foul-mouthed rant and punched him “angrily and forcefully” in the ribcage twice, when Brooks was forced by director Brad Furman to tell Depp that, because of legal permits, an upcoming take would have to be the last one of that evening.

LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 15: Maïwenn and Johnny Depp attend the "Jeanne du Barry" UK Premiere at The Curzon Mayfair on April 15, 2024 in London, England

Johnny Depp said he felt “strangely, oddly, perversely lucky” to have been offered the role of French King Louis XV at the U.K. premiere of his new film “Jeanne du Barry.”

Depp was accompanied by the film’s co-star and director Maïwenn on stage at the Curzon theater in Mayfair, where the duo briefly introduced the film.

Popular on Variety

Maïwenn also made a brief speech in which she explained she had wanted to make “Jeanne du Barry” since 2016, explaining she was “obsessed by Jeanne for many years because she was a feminist before everybody else.”

The film, one of Depp’s first since his protracted legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, opened last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it earned a seven-minute standing ovation for the actor and director.

The crowd in London on Monday evening, which included Depp’s “Pirates of the Carribean” co-star Mackenzie Crook, were similarly enamored, applauding as the actor took to the stage.

EXCLUSIVE:  Johnny Depp’s London-based film company IN.2 is adding a new string to its bow with the release this Friday of French historical drama  Jeanne du Barry .

Starring Depp as Louis XV opposite French actress and director Maïwenn in the titular role, the picture opened the Cannes Film Festival last year.

The UK release will be followed by the U.S. launch by Vertical Entertainment on May 2, which has confirmed 600 theatres so far.

Deadline caught up with Malit as well as IN.2 CEO Stephen Deuters and Development Coordinator Vivi Stone at the company offices in Notting Hill ahead of the UK premiere at London’s Curzon Mayfair on Monday night.

Malit says the decision to handle the release came out of a conversation late last summer with sales supremo Vincent Maraval at French company Goodfellas, after only middling offers for the UK rights.

“I thought, ’Why don’t we do it?’ it’s a really good opportunity to have another aspect to IN.2. We’re co-producers on the film and would be very careful in terms of money coming in and profit share afterwards,” he recounts.

He bats back a question on whether negative press around the Johnny Depp V Amber Heard trial had deterred UK distributors from acquiring the film.

“I like to think everyone’s moved on,” he says. “I don’t think it was anything to do with Johnny but rather because it’s a French film. Even though it’s got Johnny in it, it’s a French-Language period drama. It would be very different if it were a Johnny film of a commercial nature.”

Malit, who is the long-time producer of Julien Temple on films such as Oil City Confidentia l, London: The Modern Babylon and Suggs: My Life Stor y, is drawing on his past experience in event cinema.

Malit has put together an ad-hoc team for the Jeanne du Barry theatrical push in the UK, which includes veteran independent booker Martin Myer as well as Emma McCorkell and Cheyl’s Mayer’s Team PR agency.

“We got Vue, Odeon, a load of indies, we’re happy,” says Malit on the theatre bookings. “Our target audience is your classic ABC1, from 40 to 70. It’s a costume drama.”

IN.2 has recut and simplified a trailer produced for Cannes and the French release and also kept Maïwenn, who co-wrote, directed and stars in the film, front and centre of the campaign.

The filmmaker travelled to London for the UK premiere and also participated in a sold-out event with Jeanne du Barry c ostume designer Jürgen Doering organized by the Cinema & Fashion platform at the Soho Hotel, exploring how they created the costumes in collaboration with Chanel.

“We’ve kept it very balanced and led a lot with Maïwenn. Johnny is on the poster too but we’re not billing it as a comeback film or anything like that,” says Malit of the campaign.

Although the UK market for non-English language films is tough right now, Malit is upbeat saying he expects to turn a profit with the combination of theatrical and an eventual digital release.

He adds that the plan is for INA.2 to release more films in the future but could not confirm whether the company would go the same route with Depp’s upcoming directorial credit Modi .

“It will be on a project-by-project basis,” he says.

Modi update

On the set of Modi

IN.2’s main focus remains production.

Depp’s Modi , billed as a “frantic 72 hours in the life of Italian artist Modigliani”, starring Riccardo Scamarcio in the titular role with Al Pacino and Steve Graham also in the cast, is currently in post-production.

“We sent an 84 second teaser to Berlin to whet the appetite and that seemed to go down quite well,” says Deuters.

The film is currently wrapping editing and will soon head into post-production and sound, with IN.2 eyeing a fall festival launch.

“It’s most certainly a Johnny Depp film, with an amazing group of collaborators,” he adds, citing costume designer Penny Rose (Pirates of the Caribbean ), art director Dave Warren ( The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus ) and cinematographers Nicola Pecorini and Dariusz Wolski.

Deuters describes the shoot in Budapest last summer as “a lot of fun” while Malit gives a shout out to Hungarian producer Viktória Petrányi and director Kornél Mundruczó’s company Proton Cinema for their local support.

“They’re beautifully positioned for us, doing the top-end Hungarian art films and European films. They’re not simply a service company for the studios but actual filmmakers in their own right,” says Malit.

“Through them we were able to access a ‘caring crew’. We provided the heads of departments from abroad but basically ran with the Hungarian crew.”

Malit suggests the shoot was able to go-ahead fairly under the radar – even if there was excitement around the presence of Depp in the city – thanks to the fact so many other shoots were taking place there at the same time, including Dune 2.

“We only built the art studio in a studio, everything else was location,” he says, adding that due to less urban development Budapest looks more like early 20th Century Paris than the real city these days.

Deuters first connected with Depp in a support staff role on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , and then worked as his assistant before officially segueing into producing on war photographer W. Eugene Smith bio-pic Minamata.

He says Depp first started floating the idea of creating a European-based company in London as early as 2007.

“It was in his head for a long, long time and it wasn’t necessarily about getting away from Hollywood. It was just about sort of just following the independent spirit and being able to be a bit freer,” he explains. “He’s also spent a lot of time here on Sleepy Hollow and stuff like that, so he already had a connection with the country.”

Connecting with Malit at Glastonbury in 2017 was the turning point, says Deuters. Filmmaker Temple was the programmer on the Cineramageddon initiative and secured long-time friend Depp as the star guest.

The meeting would lead to the making of the Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan about The Pogues frontman Shane McGowan who was also a long-time friend of Depp.

“We all got on really famously and hung out a lot…. and said, let’s make a documentary on Shane McGowan. Johnny wanted to do it and Julian is obviously the great auteur for rock’n’roll films,” says Malit.

The doc went on to win the Special Jury Award in San Sebastian and then released worldwide, with Magnolia Pictures taking North American rights, and was then the catalyst for the creation of IN.2 with Depp as its President.

Three years on, the company has a raft of projects in various stages of development, with Deuters summing up the ‘modus operandi’ as being  “American accessibility with European sensibility”.

He says the vibe of the slate reflects the tone of Depp’s earlier films such as Benny and Joon , Ed Wood , Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and later titles including The Libertine and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street .

“That sort of feral, pioneering spirit, something that doesn’t attach itself to formula,” explains Deuters.

“We’ve got a multitude of different projects…. Period punk is a term we’ve thrown around a few times because a lot of the projects we’re developing tend to be period but with a modern bent,” he adds.

Projects in this vein include IN.2’s first TV drama, an Elizabethan era piece to which writer Oliver Lansley is attached with Temple on board as showrunner, as well as the second feature from artist and director Charlotte Colbert , who made waves with horror mystery She Will . Alexandra Stone is producing with Jelena Goldbach, who brought the project to IN.2

“We can’t say too much right now because they’re in different stages of development but they all have a European art house sensibility with heavy hitters attached,” says Development Coordinator Stone.

The company is also developing a first feature by UK poet and stand-up performer Murray Lachlan Young.

“It’s an original story with poetry involved,” says Stone. “I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”

Malit notes that the projects are financed on a case by case with a mixture of equity finance, pre-sales soft money, private investors and industry backers including Spanish distributor A Contracorriente Films.

“We operate like a normal, independent film company,” he says.

“We don’t want to be reliant on Johnny. If he takes a liking to something, then he gets first dibs but while it’s his company, we’re on our own road,” he says, adding that Jack Whigham at Range Media Talent Agency remains the first port of call for third party producers wishing to solicit Depp for a role.
