When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. • Price: Free!
• Best for: Practicing tough material 

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace. 

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads. 

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

• Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
• Best for: 24/7 homework assistance  

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.  

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school. 

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects. 

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers. 

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

• Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want 
• Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help 

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help. 

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter! 

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!  

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.  

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly. 

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below. 

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites 

First, let’s take a look at the benefits. 

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays. 

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college. 

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school. 

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites 

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help. 

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming 

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up. 

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service! 

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. 

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating. 

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website. 

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best 

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most. 

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need 

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

This webinar is a very helpful eye-opener on the apps that are popular with my students.

Staying productive and reducing digital distractions during online classes and homework time can pose a challenge to students. Many families have students who complete some or all of their education online, and from home.

We reached out to 21 experts to get their best tips to successfully manage remote learning and homework time without letting social media, games, and apps get in the way.

1. Schedule breaks for every block of homework time

Even before we instituted remote schooling, many students struggled with online distractions. With all their classwork moving online, students may find it even easier to be on social media or play games during school hours. Students are going to be spending a lot of time in front of screens by necessity. However, if there are any homework assignments that can be done off the computer, such as math worksheets that can be printed out, or studying vocabulary off flashcards, parents should encourage students to do so to prevent screen time burnout.

For assignments that do have to be completed online, parents should recognize that it may be impossible for students to completely resist checking their social media or playing a quick game. Here, the flexible schedules of remote learning can actually be a benefit. Parents should encourage their child to take short, regular breaks where they are allowed to do non-learning activities or leisure activities as long as they then get back to work once they are done. Something like 25 minutes of studying followed by 5-10 minutes of TikTok is perfectly reasonable and may get better results out of your child than attempting to ban social media entirely.

During Zoom classes, when students really need to be dedicating their full attention, then parents can be stricter about forbidding social media. Confiscating phones during class time is probably a good idea, and in extreme cases parents may want to discuss disabling apps for younger students. In every case, parents should keep in mind that many students are stressed and missing their classmates so a little more leeway regarding student’s attempts to digitally keep in touch with their friends is perfectly reasonable.

2. Have everyone in your family sign a screen time agreement to help reduce digital distractions

Parents ask me all the time how to know if their child is paying attention to their online class and doing their online assignment- or if they’re actually playing Fortnite or scrolling through TikTok. Unless you’re always in the same room as your child, it can be difficult to know exactly what your student is up to online. I always recommend having everyone in your family sign a smartphone and social media agreement and keeping the dialogue open about digital expectations and consequences.

The agreement can serve as an icebreaker for parents to cover key safety issues like screen time limits, sexting, cyberbullying, and more. It gives kids a glance at their own responsibilities as internet users and reminds them that using social media in a negative way or when they’re not supposed to can lead to consequences. Make sure the agreement is kept somewhere visible, like on the fridge or on their desk. Regularly referring back to the agreement will remind students of the commitments they made while they are taking remote classes or doing their online homework.

3. All school rules should be followed at home as well

My kids have been fully remote learning for over a year now. I have a son in 1st grade and a daughter in 7th grade. Digital distractions aren’t really an issue for my son. His tablet for school is very limited as far as the amount of apps and websites he can access. The apps he uses for school are mostly considered play-based learning, so he doesn’t try to go on anything else anyway since he’s already playing.

It’s a little more tricky with my daughter since she has access to different apps and websites for school work. Basically, any rules that the school has, we keep the same at home. For example, she’s not allowed to have her cell phone in her room during school hours because she wouldn’t be allowed to have it at school.

She admitted to me one day that she was chatting during class a few times over Google Meets, which she knew she shouldn’t do. Not being in school has been difficult for her from a social aspect, so I try to be understanding and fair about the situation. The solution we decided on was to compromise by allowing her to chat during breaks, lunch, and study hall.

Sometimes she’ll finish her work early and ask if she can chat during class, which in that case I will agree to. I try to be lenient because she is an honor roll student and has adjusted really well considering the circumstances. She’s going to be a teenager next month and we want to keep the lines of communication open. Our daughter knows that as long as she is open and honest with us, we can talk about her mistakes and it won’t always end in a punishment. This approach has worked well for us so far.

4. Design a space conducive to school work

One of the effective ways to remove digital distractions during remote learning and homework time is by carefully designing your child’s room to be conducive to studying. It should mimic or be better than classroom ambiance. If possible, provide your children separate space for studying and recreation. Set timers and reminders on their gadgets so that they will be urged to follow their schedule. If you can, give them small rewards to appreciate their consistency in following your ground rules in studying.

5. Turn phones on airplane mode and consider noise-canceling headphones for ultimate focus

• Turn your phone on airplane mode so you can use it as a timer as needed
• Turn off your phone notifications
• Have a computer that is ONLY for school
• Find a place to do your homework where you ONLY do school work – no gaming, no talking to friends, no social media
• Use noise-canceling headphones to allow for better focus
• Allow for failure – if your child sneaks a peek at his phone, it is OK. It is not the end of the world for him – or you. Take a moment to relax and then try again

That’s a good time to gently encourage reflection and ask your child what was his motivation level? Did other things take priority over homework? How would success look in this circumstance, and what steps would they need to take to get there next time?

6. Gamify learning

Kids are obsessed with games these days, so if you are going to try to limit distractions with remote learning, you might as well make it fun by turning it into a game!

You can create quests, such as limiting the usage of specific apps to a set amount of time per day or restricting visiting certain websites during specified time periods. Completing each task earns points. Then, those points can be used to buy rewards like a chores pass, an extra hour of video games, the latest Fortnite skin, or whatever would be appealing to your kid.

If you want to take it even further, you could put up a scoreboard on the wall to keep track of all the quests, earned points, and possible rewards. You could also have your kids create their own avatars with a unique name and appearance to gamify it further and make it even more fun.

Apps such as StayFree and Offtime can be used to track app usage on smartphones and tablets, and Google Chrome extensions such as Webtime Tracker can be used for laptops.

Taking a rather mundane, but necessary, task like limiting distractions and turning it into a game can really help entice your kids to participate more enthusiastically and transform a dull task into something fun and engaging.

7. Set time limits and goals before rewarding yourself with an activity

The internet has good and bad effects, but presents a high possibility of disrupting learning. Here are some factors to consider:

• Set up the desired time limit for studying and other Internet interactions respectively. Make a chain of starting to study for some time and then awarding a 10-minute break to use other stuff and then back to studying.
• Accomplish your targets before taking steps towards fun activities. Try to complete work before treating yourself with other activities as it would not lead to distraction.
• Make use of applications that allow you to use selected apps for a specified period. After the limit usage, the app will close and will not open for the next 24 hours.

8. Set yourself up for success by planning your entire schoolwork day

It is undeniable that students across the globe suffer from a common issue in regards to their education: lack of productivity. One of the most significant reasons for the lack of productivity amongst students is distractions caused by social media.

Here’s what students can do to balance homework and their devices:

• Turn off notifications so there isn’t any temptation while studying
• Figure out what works for you
• Create a plan for study and homework
• Put the phone away during study times
• Take breaks every half hour
• Set up specific hours where no technology will be used

9. Schedule breaks and set rules on no phones during working time

Remote learning challenges students with a number of different distractions around them. Electronic devices that allow access to social media and chatting apps lead the way in distractions. One minute, you could be studying, and the next minute you could be spending 20 minutes scrolling through your social media newsfeed without even realizing it.

An excellent solution is to take scheduled breaks for this purpose. For example, a 15-minute break after every hour can allow you to study and spend time using social media as well. Make sure that when not on break, you put your device to “do not disturb” mode and block social media websites on your laptop. Not getting notifications will keep you from hopping on to social media unnecessarily.

10. It’s up to you to learn self-control

Having run a remote business for some time now, and working remotely myself, I’ve learned a lot about dealing with digital distractions (especially when many of these distractions come from the very devices you need in order to do your work). You need to teach yourself self-control. If you catch yourself going over to social media on your phone/computer, take note of that and try to stop it. It’s only a matter of time before you realize you’ve been scrolling for hours.

If you don’t get the hang of stopping yourself from becoming distracted, you need to put limitations in place that’ll do it for you. Put certain devices that you might not need away from you or download an app that restricts your access to certain apps while you’re working. Even if you know the password to these applications, those extra steps of needing to use more passwords and change your preferences to access those apps might help deter you and keep your focus on work. As you do this for longer, it should become easier and you should see your productivity improve.

11. Create a workspace at home for your teen

Create a separate classroom space. Exactly as we talk about a separate and designated workspace at home for workers, students also need a separate space where they can study in peace without digital distractions. Parents should create a space that is quiet and peaceful, and make sure it only has the necessary furniture like a chair and a table, and equipment such as a computer on which their child can do the homework. There shouldn’t be any digital devices except for the one on which the kid is studying, to minimize distractions. Also, use parental locks on that device so that the kid can’t access social media on it. If the student has to work on their tablet or PC that they use for entertainment as well, make sure it has a parental lock until they complete their homework, and that all the notifications are turned off.

12. Align your work from home schedule with your teen’s school schedule

For me, the best way to manage remote learning and homework time is to provide a supportive environment. Since I also work from home, I limit my use of gadgets at home outside working hours. I align my working hours with my son’s class schedule. Then, we spend our weekends playing video games for two hours only. After that, I help him do his homework. In that way, he will see how gadgets are used for studying and for leisure properly. Above all, this leads him to create a good study habit.

13. Create positive habits in your teens and add entertainment breaks into homework time

A habit cannot be reversed in a single day. It takes some time and effort to do so. This means that if a child is habitual of spending most of his time with their smartphone, then, parents will have to help them get rid of this habit slowly. One of the best things parents can do is to set up a no digital time during the day for the entire family and reward the child for their success in abiding by the rule. Further, the rewards should be such that they can actually motivate the child to stay away from his smartphone during the decided time. Yummy snacks, a new comic book, and some extra pocket money are some examples of alluring rewards that can inspire kids to abide by the no digital device time.

14. Consider writing notes old school style with pen and paper

Here are two tips to be successful with remote learning:

Get Organized:

Make yourself as organized as you do for your physical classes on campus. Before the school season begins, ensure that you have enough technical equipment to access the required course material. Furthermore, you need to have enough writing material, like a pe and writing pad for making quick reliable notes for the class.

Set Up Your Workspace:

Set up a dedicated learning environment for studying. When choosing a workplace try to limit distraction as much as possible both psychologically and online. If you’re at home, resist the urge to turn on the television or finish that last load of laundry. Ensure that your internet connection is strong enough as to not cause a hurdle while you are studying.

15. Set up a designated school space in your home

I suggest setting up a homework/homeschool space in your home. Things to keep in mind:

• Try to choose a quiet space in a less busy part of the house , an environment that will naturally minimize distractions. It’s important to choose this area and stick with it
• Choose functional furniture and stock up on supplies. We suggest avoiding couches or lap desks and instead opt for a traditional desk or a small table and chair. Consider adding a soft cushion on the chair — when kids feel uncomfortable, they’re more prone to stirring and squirming, leading to distraction and disorganization. With regard to supplies, be sure to stock up on pens, pencils, and markers. We also suggest including a timer on your supplies list, which you can use to give your child a brain break for intervals of uninterrupted work
• Reserve space for a calendar and to-do list. Important, visible anchors like these will make your child’s in-house homeschool/homework space an area that encourages building on small tasks to reach larger goals ‍

16. Help your students keep their senses activated

Parents need to recognize that many children cannot concentrate for long periods of time in an online class learning setting. So, distractions are not necessarily all bad. They may give a student a needed breathing space to refocus and settle their minds before they re-engage.

• Offer food to students that they can snack on between classes or while online learning (if the teacher allows). This helps them concentrate more effectively and adds comfort to the experience
• Give students fidget toys to keep their hands busy while they are learning online. This will allow them to get some of their excess energy out
• Let them access online in different physical positions: a chair, a bed, standing, a countertop. Switch up where they learn and see which setting is best for concentration
• Let students do something constructive if they are going to be distracted. That is one reason I wrote a word play book . A riddle book or joke book works too
• Provide students with paper and amazing colored pencils or unique crayons or cray-pas and let them doodle while learning online ‍

The key is to keep their senses activated and to enable them to use distractions constructively.

17. Allow teens to take scheduled social media breaks to communicate with friends

Doing as much homework off the computer as possible will help minimize distractions and prevent burnout from too much screen time. For assignments that do have to be completed online, parents should recognize that it may be impossible for students to completely resist checking their social media or playing a quick game. Here, the flexible schedules of remote learning can actually be a benefit.

Parents should encourage their child to take short, regular breaks where they are allowed to do whatever they’d like on the computer as long as they then get back to work once they are done. Something like 25 minutes of studying followed by 5-10 minutes of TikTok is perfectly reasonable for teens, and may get better results out of your child than attempting to ban social media entirely.

During Zoom classes, when students really need to be dedicating their full attention, then parents can be stricter about forbidding social media. Confiscating phones during class time is probably a good idea, and in extreme cases, parents may want to discuss disabling apps for younger students.

In every case, parents should keep in mind that many students are stressed and missing their classmates, so a little more leeway regarding student’s attempts to digitally keep in touch with their friends is perfectly reasonable.

18. Create new study habits to embrace a new normal during remote learning

Use these tips to minimize distractions, maintain focus, and create new study habits to make the most of digital learning during the pandemic.

• Turn off unnecessary alerts: Getting incoming notifications and alerts can derail a student’s ability to concentrate. Make sure computer and phone apps, such as social media, weather, package delivery, and email, are set to be silent during class and study times
• Keep reminders handy: Get your student in the habit of writing down one to three goals or tasks they need to accomplish each day on a sticky note. Keeping these goals as a note on their computer or nearby can be an easy way to refocus when distractions arise
• Use a study partner: If your student would enjoy social interaction with another good student, having a dedicated partner may help them achieve more. Consider putting a time limit on their communication to make sure the lessons get completed
• Consider getting a tutor: At some point, your student is likely to have trouble with a subject. Make sure you communicate the importance of asking for help. If a teacher can’t spend enough time with your child, consider hiring an online or in-person tutor, such as an older student
• Match tasks with energy: If your student finds it difficult to concentrate on studies during a particular time of day, encourage them to work at a different time. For instance, if they have more focus at night, consider allowing them to study later
• Use study blocks: It can be challenging for young people to maintain focus for long periods. Consider setting a timer for study blocks, such as 30 minutes, and then a 10-minute break. This structure gives students a quick reward for putting in some hard work

19. Create structure with a daily plan

One approach to help students focus and to reduce digital distractions is parents helping their kids create structure at home. You do this by creating a plan for the following day at the end of every day. What assignments need to get accomplished? What order do they want to do them in? And by what time do they want to have them done?

For many students, learning remotely gives them the freedom to do their work when, and how they want. Schools not only provide social interaction, but structure to their life. By creating an at-home structure for school, remote students can be more productive by knowing what they need to do and by what time they would like to be done with it. This allows time for breaks, lunch, relaxing, etc.

20. Gradually build up restricted device time to reduce digital distractions

All students will eventually need the self-discipline to manage this issue themselves, but I have some suggestions for parents who are starting from scratch with kids who have never had any kind of device restrictions before.

Our first tip is to slightly limit something outside of school work. For example, a parent of one of my students started by limiting their kids to one hour of video games per day. This was a big adjustment for this student, but eventually, they came to really value this one hour.

Once the student is familiar with the idea of being restricted, apply the same tactic to another device. Our suggestion is to first deny access to their phone for a certain time in the evening, maybe during dinner. Reinforce that it is not permanent and make sure to give the device back on time in order to build trust.

From there, either increase the time period, add an additional hour somewhere in the day, and move into homework time if it’s going well. We suggest establishing a set time for homework and limiting phone access during that time.

This process can continue to scale as needed, but the trick is not to go too far in the beginning. Parents and teachers need to make it doable for students just starting out and then build up trust and consistency , so it simply becomes part of the routine.

21. Help your student understand the importance of the schoolwork and homework

Hoffman says to have a mindset shift about what homework and school work is all about. Some kids think that homework is something they have to get through because their parents and teachers say so. Parents can help by placing the responsibility for getting those things done with their kids and help them understand why they need to do it.

Have discussions with your child about why homework is important. Here are some talking points:

• Homework allows students to move towards mastery
• The more they practice, the more results they’ll see in what they can do academically
• Routinely doing homework will help increase grades and help students better reach their goals

Parents should show students, in some way, that they can also prevent digital distractions when they are working or concentrating on a task. For example, put your phone away when you sit down to write work emails, pay the bills, or make a grocery list. If your kid sees you without your phone during those times, it will speak louder than you simply telling them. Model what you want your child to do.

Doing homework can be both time-consuming and frustrating, and you probably want to do more with your free time than just homework. When you have a lot of work to do, it can be tough to work efficiently. By staying focused, organizing and planning, and motivating yourself, you can get your homework done in a timely manner and move onto more fun and exciting activities. But you should start with putting away all distractions such as your devices unless you need them.They are normally the main distraction. You should also work in a quiet place so you are not attempted to go and do something else. For example, you should not work near your TV because you will be tempted to go and watch it.

• Download website-blocking apps such as Freedom or SelfControl to stay focused while using your computer for homework. Some, such as the Chrome extension Strict Workflow, even have the added bonus of preventing you from cancelling the timer once it has started.

• If one subject or type of assignment is taking much more time than the others, you may want to ask for a little extra help in that area from your teacher or parent.
• If you get distracted or go off-task, don't make excuses for yourself. (e.g. "I won't be able to focus until I do this anyway." or "I'm sure it will only take a minute or two."

• Consider consolidating your multiple different subject folders and notebooks into one big binder separated by tab dividers. This way, all of your schoolwork will be in one place.

• Decide how much time you want to spend on your homework collectively.
• Make a list of all the different tasks you need to finish.
• Estimate how much time you’ll be able to spend on each task to finish your homework when you want to.

• A ten page essay that’s due in a week that you haven’t started should be labeled an “A” or “B” while a short five question worksheet due in three days may be labeled a “C”.
• Make sure you don't wait until the last second to get assignments done.

• If you set a timer, it can motivate you to get your homework done more quickly. Be sure to take a 2-5 minute break in between. For example, if you're going to do an assignment that you expect to take 30 minutes, set a timer for 15 minutes. Take a 2-minute break when the timer goes off, then set your timer again for 15 minutes.
• It can be good to have friends over if they help motivate you and are interested in getting their homework done quickly as well. They might be a distraction at times but it can also be easier to work when there are people around you who are working too.
• If you drink something cold during your breaks it can help make you more alert so that you'll finish faster. It might also help to do it at night rather than during the day so you feel more time pressure.
• Try to get your homework done as much as you can in school. You could do it during a flex or study hall. If your teacher gives you time in class to work on it, use it.

Should we stop doing homework through the computer?

One adjustment I have had to make from high school to college has been homework. Sure, the numbers of hour I’ve had to study has increased, as well as my workload, but that has yet to be too great of a burden as of yet. No, I am talking about the way that I complete my homework. Six months ago, while in my high school classes, I never had to worry about submitting homework assignments online because it was all done through worksheets. Now I am doing Italian exercises online, creating my own website for my freshman seminar, taking an online class, and of course, posting on this blog. Now I purchase my textbooks online because they are cheaper and easier to access. The reliance on technology in college has made me wonder are there any learning benefits or detriments to using technology so much?  I did some research to find out.

I came upon this article  written by Rachel Grate. Grate lists three different reasons why reading print is better for you than reading through a screen. The first reason is that your reading comprehension is much improved when reading print (Grate 2014). Grate references an article from by Alison Flood  about a study involving 50 people. All of the individuals were to read a short story from writer Elizabeth George, but half were to read through a Kindle and the other half by paper. The readers were then tested on what they had read.

Before I reveal the results of the study, it is important to note that it is difficult to say whether this study was a double blinded study . We do not know how the individuals were chosen to participate in this study. This means that confounding variables such as intelligence, level of higher education, and place of birth could still be at work in this study. We also do not know if the researchers conducting the study were blinded, meaning they can be biased in their findings. Lastly, truly great experiments usually have placebos. Unfortunately it would be impossible to have a placebo in this situation because you can not give somebody a fake Kindle or piece of print to read the story. Now, on to the results.

Flood also references another study . 72 students in tenth grade, all from Norway, were given texts to read. Some were given the text in PDF form on a computer, while others were given text. The students were then tested on what they read, similarly to the above study.  The results of this study were similar to the aforementioned study. The print readers performed better than the PDF readers. Now, just because this study shows a correlation between reading print rather than through a screen and grades does not mean this is a direct causation. As I said, all of the students were from Norway.   Norway is a very, very smart country . They cannot represent the whole world due to their intelligence not representing the average Joe. In addition to that, there were only 72 students.  The hypothesis that students do better reading print than computer simply cannot be backed up by these two studies.  I would ask for a meta-analysis to be done. Until this is done, we do not know if the results were a false positive or were correct. More studies leads to a lesser probability that chance is the reason for the results. Even the best studies, like the one Andrew showed us about prayer and healing, suffer from chance. However, it was revealed the conclusion that prayer does help with healing was revealed to be a false positive as a meta-analysis was done. When we get more and more studies done on this topic we will have a more clear idea of whether homework should be done or shouldn’t be done through a computer.

I do not like the way in which either of these studies were conducted. Because of this I have decided to make up my own experiment. My study would have at least 10,000 individuals, randomly selected from different places from around the world. Similarly to the above studies, they would be given the same texts, with half reading a computer format and half reading a print format. The texts they would read would be in their appropriate language. This study would be a single blind study. I would not let the researchers conducting the study know whose test results were whose to ensure there were no hidden biases. As I said, a placebo is not possible in this experiment. If this study was done multiple times and got the same result of print readers having better test scores than screen readers, I think the hypothesis that reading print is better for you would have a ton of merit. However, my study can’t be the definitive conclusion on this topic. I would have to publish it and have it readily available for peer review. This is how science works best to find answers. By allowing my study to be peer reviewed, other scientists can find faults in my study that I would not have seen without their expertise.

Too much of a good thing can be bad, and the use of computers is no exception to this principle. Computers are obviously beneficial for assignments like these blog posts, yet the use of computers brings additional drawbacks like unreliable technology, or extra time spent trying to use or fix the computer. Many professors including Andrew ban the use of computers in class because of how distracting they can be, and they can be just as distracting at home. I came across this website that summarizes a study which concludes that computers benefit fifth graders’ learning when used for their homework. As you criticized about the studies included in your post, this study also only tests one small group of people, and is not significant enough to prove anything for humans as a whole. Because many individual studies have been conducted, there should be more meta-analyses of the studies.

I really enjoyed reading your post. It caught my attention, just like I’m sure it did with most people, because we are doing this assignment through the use of a computer. Most of my teachers in high school discouraged the use of computers while in class and emphasized the important correlation between hand written notes and memory retention. I am not surprised with the outcomes of the studies that you presented. Also, I agree with you that the studies conducted were not thorough enough given the size of the groups participating. I think your idea of a large, thorough study is needed to further examine this topic. I believe the study should go deeper to understand the causes for the results, such as potential distractions while using a computer.

I think this topic can also lead into many different discussion areas. Technology is taking over our lives and can be a downfall for many. It was not as prevalent when I was in grammar school. Now, grammar school kids have smart phones and many use use computers for all of their homework and reading assignments as well as other technology as their main source of entertainment. I understand the feeling completely when you switch from using paper to all technology. I’m in my junior year but I’ve had semesters where it switches between all paper work and all tech, or mostly a mix. Overall, I had the same initial impressions that you did when it came to doing online homework. In some cases, a physical book is much more preferred to read than a digital copy. But for me, the biggest improvement when using all technology is the convenience. I no longer carry around five books and all my notes in my backpack, because I can have one or two physical copies, and the other books and notes on my laptop. This switch is useful for me because I tend to want to fill empty spaces in my schedule, and if I have 10 minutes extra between classes, I can now use that on homework I would not otherwise be able to access.

Personally, I most definitely avoid technology whenever I can. I prefer to read books in front of me, hand write my notes, and study off of hard copies rather than computer screens. Not only is relying on computers and laptops extremely dangerous, but it takes away from the learning experience, in my opinion. It takes away the fun and creativity of the learning process and creates a more “work” environment. Also, I am not surprised that in your Norway study, the kids that read from a book did better than those who read a PDF; I am sure there is probably a correlation between higher scores and hard copy reading.

hi, I liked how you analyzed each experiment and I do agree with you that these results do not provide strong evidence for the hypothesis tested. Regarding the experiment that you would do, I think that it would not be a good idea to test 10,000 individuals because it will cost you too much money to just run the experiment, which I think is not worth spending a lot of money on it, as Andrew mentioned in class that spending a lot of money on hypothesis’s are not really that important in our life, could be a waste of time and money as many researchers said about paying a lot of money in the prayer healing observation. In addition, I personally think that this experiment will not produce unbiased results because almost all of us have learned reading from papers since we were children, which , I think, will cause most subjects in the experiment to have better reading skills from a printed paper, as most of us learned reading from printed paper far ago before we started reading from Kandle or a computer. Choosing a major is a big decision, so it is important to know all your options. At NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts , the Interactive Media Arts (IMA) program, which explores digital interactivity, is quickly growing in popularity.

When I was in high school applying to colleges, I had a hard time choosing my potential major. Nothing felt like the right program for me, whether I was considering Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or another similar major. However, NYU’s IMA program got me excited about the possibility of pursuing a major that aligns with my interests.

Let’s break down everything about the IMA major to learn if the program could be the right fit for you too!

Interactive Media Arts 101

Interactive Media Arts highlights computation as a key skill to creativity in our digital world. The IMA program combines NYU’s liberal arts core with the ability to code, create physical and digital interactions, and explore new media.

The IMA curriculum emphasizes proficiency across many different areas of technology and creativity. This exploration starts in your first semester at NYU with two core classes that all IMA students take. First, Creative Computing taught me about the basics of technology and programming. Second, Communications Lab helped me improve my artistic abilities by teaching me to create different forms of media, such as short films and animations.

IMA classes fall into six categories to broaden students’ skill sets:

• Programming and data
• Physical computing
• Design and fabrication
• Tech and society
• Project development and research

The major offers a high degree of flexibility, allowing me to choose courses that interest me. Liberal arts and sciences courses and general electives complete the rest of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Additionally, there is enough space to double-major or minor in other disciplines. That’s Really a College Class?

All my favorite NYU classes are from the Interactive Media Arts program! Since most IMA classes are project-based, I get to create projects instead of taking tests (which I prefer).

For example, I took an IMA course called Introduction to Digital Fabrication, which is one of the most popular courses offered. There, I learned various fabrication techniques and how to operate 3D printers, laser cutters, and computer numerical control machines. Our building in Downtown Brooklyn has a fabrication shop with high-end machines. In addition, we have access to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering MakerSpace across the street. Both places have all the resources you need to bring your ideas to life.

Last semester I took a course called Topics in Media Art: Typography and Technology. We learned about the history of type and had the opportunity to design our own fonts. For a field trip, we visited a printshop in Williamsburg and printed our work on a Risograph. These special printers mix screen printing and photocopying for posters, zines, graphic novels, and more.

One of my favorite classes was Useless Machines, where we explored the concept of “uselessness” and its application in the machines we come across every day. At the end of the semester, my class had the opportunity to showcase our work at a local gallery show!

What Does the Future Hold?

Pretty much anything you want! The Interactive Media Arts program is versatile and can be applied to various fields and jobs after graduation. Today, my friends are pursuing jobs in user experience design, software engineering, gallery spaces, project management, graphic design, and more.

This program can be whatever you want to make of it, and the skills you learn can prepare you to succeed in whichever career you choose. IMA professors are pioneers in their chosen fields. As a result, they’re a valuable resource for learning and motivation. The department staff includes individuals with diverse experiences, including a YouTuber with millions of subscribers, a game studio owner based in Brooklyn, and a curator of art exhibitions.

In addition, IMA’s location in the heart of New York City allows us to connect with professionals in our field and take advantage of the amazing events and opportunities available. When I started this program, I never imagined the projects I would work on or the opportunities that would come my way. In short, I am so grateful for the experience and excited about what the future holds.

Where is the main IMA building located? 

While some Tisch buildings are located at NYU’s Washington Square campus, the main academic building for IMA is located at NYU’s Downtown Brooklyn campus on the 4th floor of 370 Jay Street. The Downtown Brooklyn campus houses some other Tisch programs as well as the entirety of the Tandon School of Engineering . As an IMA student at NYU’s campus in New York City, you will take classes in both locations.

Where do you live, Brooklyn or Manhattan?

If you choose to live on campus during your first year at NYU as an IMA major, you will live in one of the Manhattan residence halls. After your first year, if you decide to continue living in an NYU residence hall, you can choose to live in any available residence hall across both campuses.

What is the difference between IMA (at the Tisch School of the Arts) and Integrated Design and Media (at the Tandon School of Engineering)? Why choose one over the other?

IMA and Integrated Design and Media (IDM) are similar programs, but there are some key differences. IMA students earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, while IDM students earn a Bachelor of Science degree. This is because the IMA major includes a liberal arts core, while the IDM major emphasizes an engineering core. As a result, each major requires different courses. However, the two programs collaborate often, and students can take classes in both programs to fulfill their degree requirements.

Why does NYU require a creative portfolio during the application process? 

The IMA department wants to get a sense of you as an individual and understand what kind of experience you can bring to the program! But don’t worry; there is no right or wrong portfolio. The best advice I can give is to be yourself. This portfolio can be very different from the traditional art portfolio, so don’t be afraid to add any fun projects that show off your creative side.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. Currently, the tool supports consumer PCs manufactured in 2016 and later. Earlier model computers are being added on an ongoing basis.

Prepare for recovery

Prepare your computer for system recovery before you download and install the HP Cloud Recovery Tool.

Back up your files. See HP PCs - Back up your files (Windows 11, 10) .

Set aside one to four hours for the recovery process. The recovery time varies depending on the network and USB flash drive.

Make sure that you have a computer with an active internet connection. For best results, an Ethernet connection is recommended. Do not disconnect from the internet or Ethernet during the process.

Make sure that you use an AC power connection to the computer during the process. Do not disconnect from AC power during the process to avoid recovery failure.

If you are on an unsecured network, skip this step and continue to the next screen.

When the cloud recovery tool detects the information for your device, click Next .

If you download the recovery media on a different computer than the computer you want to recover, select the I need to enter Product ID for my HP system check box to type the information for the affected system. If the Product ID is Not Match or Invalid error message is displayed,the HP Cloud Recovery Tool is not yet available for your computer. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads for other recovery options.

To locate the product ID, look on the back of the computer for a label. You can also see Find product and serial numbers for HP PCs, printers, and accessories for more information about locating the product ID.

If the product ID has an AV before a pound sign (#) and a three-digit number, do not include that information in the product ID. For example, if the product ID is JGT75AV#123, you would only enter JGT75AV as the product ID.

Select your USB flash drive from the drop-down list, and then click Next .

An alert that all information on the USB flash drive will be permanently deleted is displayed. Click OK to continue.

If the The recovery USB Flash drive is ready. Do you want to delete the downloaded temporary files to save space in the drive? message is displayed, click Accept to continue.

To finish the download and close the app, click Finish .

Performing an HP System Recovery with your USB Drive

Perform the following steps to recover the computer using a USB flash drive.

Turn on the computer and insert the USB flash drive into a USB port.

Turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button.

Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives and remove any recently added internal hardware.

Turn on the computer and use booting options to boot from the USB drive.

Follow on-screen prompts to complete the recovery.

If you experience a long delay after clicking Next on the Welcome page, perform the following steps.

Check your network connectivity.

Make sure that the system clock and time zone are accurate.

Restart the HP Cloud Recovery Tool and try again.

What should I do if the recovery repeatedly fails after using the tool on a secure network?

If your attempts to use the recovery tool on a secure network fail, contact the network administrator to get your proxy server, port information, and login credentials.

What if my download attempts keep timing out or failing?

If your download attempts keep failing, do the following.

Check your internet connection.

Check that the system date and time are set correctly.

What if a 'Drive partitioning failed' error message is displayed?

If a Drive partitioning failed error message is displayed, it might mean there is a problem with the USB flash drive. Follow these steps to test the USB flash drive.

Reformat the USB flash drive.

Create a file on the USB flash drive.

Try accessing the file you created on the USB flash drive.

If you are unable to access the file, you might need to replace the USB flash drive.

What if an 'Image extraction failed' or 'Relocation fail' error message is displayed?

If an Image extraction failed or Relocation fail error message is displayed, HP recommends that you restart the recovery process. The following error messages indicate that there might be a problem with the download or processing of the recovery image.

Image extraction failed

Relocation failed

Failure to mount the recovery image

Failure to get drive letter from mounting image

Failure to compare Hash...

Recovery USB content size does not equal download ISO size

What if a 'Disk not selectable' error message is displayed?

If a Disk not selectable error message is displayed, make sure that your USB flash drive has 32 GB of free space.

What if the process fails during the USB formatting?

If the download process fails during the USB formatting, follow these steps.

Make sure that the USB flash drive has a minimum of 32 GB.

Make sure that the USB flash drive is properly inserted into the USB port.

Insert the USB flash drive into a different USB port.

Reformat the USB flash drive, and then test it to make sure that it works.

Restart the process using a properly functioning USB flash drive.

Add, find, edit, or delete a contact in Outlook

You can create new contacts from scratch in the People page or add someone as a contact from their profile card. A contact can be as basic as a name and email address, or include more information like a street address, multiple phone numbers, and a profile picture.

Important:  Steps may be different between  new  and classic Outlook for Windows. To determine which version of Outlook you're using, look for  File  on the ribbon. If there's no  File  option, follow the steps under the New Outlook tab. If the  File  option appears, select the tab for Classic Outlook .

In Outlook, you have the option to:

Add a contact

Find a contact, edit a contact, delete a contact.

Note:  If the steps under this New Outlook tab don't work, you may not be using new Outlook for Windows yet. Select Classic Outlook  and follow those steps instead.

You can add a contact from scratch or from someone's profile card.

Add a contact from scratch

On the Home tab, select New contact .

Enter a name and any other details you would like, then select  Save .

Tip:  You can enter additional contact information any time. Select the contact from the list, then select Edit contact , and begin adding more information. 

Add a contact from someone's profile card

In Mail, open an email message in the reading pane, and then select the name of the sender or recipient you want to add to your contacts.

On the profile card that opens, at the bottom of the card, select Add to contacts .

Enter details for the contact.

Select Save .

Select the Search box at the top of the window.

Type the name, phone number, or company name for the contact you are searching for.

Choose the person you want from the search results.

You can add or update a contact's information or photo.

Add or update contact information

Double click the contact you would like to edit.

Add or update the information for your contact.

When you are finished, select Save .

Add or update a contact's photo

Select the contact that you want to add or update the photo for.

Select the camera button.

Select Upload a new photo , choose the file you want to use, and then select Open to upload.

If you want to reposition the photo, click inside the circle and drag the pointer. To zoom in or out, use the slider below the photo.

Select Apply , and then select Done .

Select the contact you want to delete, then you can either select Delete from the ribbon or right-click the contact and select Delete .

Select Delete again to confirm.

On the People page, select New contact from the ribbon.

Add any additional details you want.

Select Save & Close .

Enter details for the contact, then select Save & Close .

Type the name of the contact you are searching for.

When you are finished, select  Save & Close .

Double click the contact that you want to add or update the photo for.

Tip:  For a contact that you previously added a photo for, you can right click the existing photo, and select either Change Picture or Remove Picture .

Choose the file you want to use, and then select Open to upload.

Go to the contact you want to delete, and then you can either right-click the contact and select Delete , or double click the contact and select  Delete from the ribbon.

In Mail , open an email message in the reading pane, and then select the name of the sender or recipient you want to add to your contacts.

Enter any additional details for the contact, then select Save .

Select the contact you would like, then select Edit contact .

Select Edit contact , then select the camera button.
