Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Essay for Students - 100, 200, 500 Words

A well-known liberation warrior, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, fought with national figures like Mahatma Gandhi for India's independence. He diligently strove to unite a divided India because he believed in the power of togetherness. He was given the nickname "Iron Man of India" in recognition of his success in bringing the nation together and his efforts for national unification. Sardar Patel was appointed the nation's Home Minister after independence.

To create United India, he undertook the complicated process of bringing together more than 500 princely states. He served as an example for later generations and other freedom warriors. October 31 is honoured as "National Unity Day" on the anniversary of his birth to celebrate the lessons we gained from his life.

Patel always said ‘Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonised and united properly, then it becomes a spiritual power.’ His life has been a source of motivation and inspiration. He first accomplished his professional objectives with little help from others before playing a crucial role in uniting the Indian people in their quest for independence.

He was known as the Iron Man of India because he adhered to the idea of Unity in Diversity and his willingness to stand as one for the goal of India's independence. He was given the name Sardar Patel, which means leader Patel, in recognition of his leadership abilities and capacity to relate to the general public.

My Inspiration

Sardar Patel made an exceptional and unparalleled contribution to the freedom struggle in India. He genuinely inspired me. I was incredibly motivated by learning about him in history books and other publications. I've always aspired to be like him and positively contribute to my nation.

At the height of the liberation struggle, he served as a huge source of inspiration for young people across the country, and he still does now. In all respects, he qualifies as a self-made man. His concepts of integration laid the groundwork for unity. India's Iron Man will always be appreciated.

On October 31, 1875, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born in the Gujarati village of Nadiad among the Leuva Patel Patidar community. Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel is his full name; however, he is more commonly referred to as Sardar Patel. His mother, Ladbai had a spiritual bent, while Sardar Patel's father, Zaverbhai Patel, served in the Army of the Queen of Jhansi. Patel has always had a strong sense of bravery.

Sardar Patel finished his matriculation at 22 when everyone else completed their graduation, and because of this, everyone assumed he would be working in regular occupations. Following graduation, Sardar Patel continued his education, earning a degree in law before moving to England to practise law as a barrister. He practised law in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, after leaving for India.

As a member of the Indian National Congress, Vallabhbhai was elected Secretary for Gujarat in 1917. Following the flooding in Kaira in 1918, he protested the British practice of taxing the farmers. He tried to convince the British to give the farms' land back. He received the title of "Sardar" in recognition of his valiant efforts to reclaim the land and unite the local farmers.

A tax hike was another issue that Bardoli's farmers had to deal with in 1928. Farmers' land was taken when they were unable to pay the levy. After negotiating a deal between the government and the farmers' representatives, Vallabhbhai was able to give the land back to the farmers.

Patel was also a key figure in Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement. Gandhi and Patel travelled the nation together, enlisting 300,000 new members and amassing more than 1.5 million. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was imprisoned in 1930 due to his involvement in the well-known Salt Satyagraha movement, which Mahatma Gandhi started.

Additionally, he delivered an energising speech that profoundly affected the audience. When Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned, he participated in every event to support the Satyagraha movement that expanded throughout Gujarat. After signing an agreement between Lord Irwin and Mahatma Gandhi, Patel was freed in 1931.

In 1950, Vallabhbhai Patel's health began to deteriorate. The doctor had informed him that he wouldn't live very long. His physical health started deteriorating after a few months, forcing him to be on bed rest. He suffered a heart attack on December 15th, 1950, and died the same day. His birthday, which falls on January 31st, was designated Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day in 2014. In 1991, he received the Bharat Ratna Award posthumously.

My Patriotism

Sardar Patel made a tremendous and unparalleled contribution to the fight for Indian independence. He was the one who awoke a sense of patriotism in me. Through him, I understood how important it is to be patriotic. He will always be my role model and my inspiration. I shall look up to him and do something which my country would be proud of as it was of him. Sardar Patel's desire to succeed professionally and his efforts are incredibly motivating. He served as an example for today's kids and those in his day. In the truest sense, he was a self-made man.

Sardar Patel served as the first municipal commissioner of Ahmedabad from 1917 to 1924 and in 1924 he became the president of Municipality. He served as the president from 1924 to 1928.

His movement to help the farmers and zamindars of Kairana (Gujarat) against the decision of the Bombay Govt to retrieve the tax even after the unfavourable crop season made him a prominent figure in 1918. The agitation of zamindars of Bardoli against the increased taxes was led successfully by Sardar Patel in the year 1928. After this movement, he was recognized as “Sardar” which means “leader”.

Sardar Patel was sentenced to imprisonment for three months at the time of 1930 Salt Satyagraha. The Karachi session of the Indian National Congress was presided over by Sardar Patel in 1931. He took part in Mahatma Gandhi’s movement of disobedience and was arrested by the British Police in 1940. He was imprisoned at that time for a period of nine months. He lost almost 20 pounds of weight while serving his term in jail.

Sardar Patel was arrested for the third time at the time of Quit India Movement (1942) and his period of imprisonment was 1942 to 1945 at the fort in Ahmednagar. The Congress Party was led by him in 1937 elections and he was one of the prominent contenders for the post of Congress President in 1937. However, he withdrew his nomination and was replaced by Jawaharlal Nehru upon receiving Gandhi's advice.

After the above incident, the British Govt invited Nehru for the formation of Interim Govt. Perhaps Sardar Patel would be Prime Minister of India if he was elected as the President of Congress instead of Nehru.

The united India that we have today could be attributed to the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

After India gained freedom, he was instrumental in persuading all the princely states to accede to India, often threatening them with military action when needed. This uncompromising attitude for an integrated India has earned him the title of “Iron Man of India”. On 31 st October 2018, the Prime Minister of India inaugurated a colossal statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, called the “Statue of Unity”, in the state of Gujarat India.

Ambition and Education

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born as Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, on 31 st October 1875. His father was Jhaverbhai Patel and his mother was Laad Bai. Sardar Patel was a mediocre student; though, he developed a philosophical attitude, since his childhood. He cleared his matriculation at a late age of 22 years and was considered as unambitious and someone who is fit only for a mediocre job.

This however, wasn’t exactly the case as Vallabhbhai nurtured a dream of studying law from England and become a successful barrister. Thus, he pursued his studies, by borrowing books from other lawyers and passed the examination within two years. Subsequently, he was called to bar and settled down in Godhara, Gujarat with his wife Jhaverbaben Patel.

It took him many years of successful practice as a lawyer and saving money, at the same time dispensing his family’s financial obligations, before he had enough money to travel to England to become a barrister.

Sardar Patel applied for a pass and a ticket to England in the name of V.J. Patel and the correspondence was addressed to his brother, who also had the same initials. However, a surprise awaited him as his elder brother declared that he had also nurtured a dream of studying in England and if he follows on the footsteps of his younger brother, it would bring bad name to the family’s reputation. Such was the level of sacrifice of Sardar Patel for his family, that he let his elder brother go to England and continued his practice in Godhara.

Not before he was aged 36, that Sardar Patel again got a chance to travel to England and study in the Temple Inn in London, completing a 36 months course in 30 months. He returned and settled in Ahmadabad, becoming the city’s most successful barrister. At this stage, Sardar Patel had no political ambitions and only thought of amassing wealth practicing as a barrister and giving best education to his children – daughter named Maniben Patel and son named Dahyabhai Patel.

Political Activism

Vallabhbhai Patel was elected as the sanitation commissioner of Ahmadabad in 1917. Though, he confronted the British Officials on several civic issues, he never showed keen interest in politics. Things began to change after Patel met Mahatma Gandhi in person in October 1917. On the insistence of Gandhi, Patel became the secretary of Gujarat Sabha, which was the Gujarat arm of Indian National Congress. From there began Patel’s journey for the freedom struggle; fighting for the rights of peasants, farmers and supporting reforms like Satyagraha and Quit India Movement.

Post Independence

Sardar Patel played a prominent role in the integration of India after independence. He persuaded Jawaharlal Nehru and other senior congress leaders to accept the Cabinet Mission Plan of 16 th May 1946, which proposed the partition of India of religious grounds. Patel knew that rejecting the plan would mean that the Muslim league will be called for forming the government. The government was finally formed under the Prime Ministership of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel as the Minister of Home Affairs and Information and Broadcasting. Patel took a lead in dividing public assets in the partition of India.

In the ensuing violence following the partition of India, Patel travelled extensively to refugee camps and border areas in order to subdue the riots.

Sardar Patel was one of the three leaders who led India from 1948 to 1950, the other two being Governor General of India – Chakravarti Rajagopalachari and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Statue of Unity

The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated a colossal statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat on 31 st October 2018. It is named the “Statue of Unity” and is located on a river island facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam, 100 Kms southeast of Vadodara.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a man of distinguished resolve and determination. He also had a foresight which is only a trait of good political leaders. Without his contributions, the India that we have today would have been a distant dream.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, also known as iron man of India held the posts of first deputy Prime Minister, first Minister of Home Affairs and first Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces of India, in office from 15 th August 1947 to 15 th December 1950. He was also a successful barrister and a senior leader and 49 th President of the Indian National Congress. Vallabhbhai’s contribution in the freedom struggle as well as in India’s integration post independence was immense.

Early Life and Education of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31st October in 1875 at Nadiad, Gujrat. He went to school at Nadiad, Petlad, and Borsad. He completed his matriculation at the later age of 22. He seemed to be an unambitious boy destined for a commonplace job.

Although, he was planning to study in Law. He wanted to see himself as a successful barrister. He passed through a tough phase during his preparation for the Law examination. He had to stay away from his family for a long period to continue his studies.

He even had to borrow books from the other lawyers. He passed the examination within two years. During many years he saved money. Now, after becoming an advocate, he earned the reputation of one of the fierce and skilled lawyers.

He also took care of the people suffering from the plague. But when he became a victim of the disease, he sent his family away from him and recovered slowly.

He was married to Jhaverben Patel. He started his practice in Godhra. He was elected as the first chairman and founder of “Edward Memorial High School” Borsad, today known as Jhaverbhai Dajibhai Patel High School.

His wife was suffering from cancer and couldn’t survive. He got the news during a cross-examining the witness in court but didn’t get distracted and won the case. At 36, he traveled to England and completed the Law study.

Career and Major Works of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

He fought for the post of sanitation commissioner of Ahmedabad in 1917 and finally got it. He had various clashes with the British on civic issues.

But he never showed interest in joining politics. Although, after several meetings with Mahatma Gandhi , he eventually got interested and joined the freedom struggle of India.

1. Fight for Self-Rule

Vallabhbhai Patel became the Secretary of Gujarat Sabha, which is known as the Gujarati arm of the Indian National Congress. He also organized the relief efforts in the wake of plague and famine in Kheda.

When Gandhi asked the Gujarati activists to devote themselves to the struggle, Patel volunteered to encourage the people to respond in the request of Gandhi. He delivered a speech addressing the whole nation to sign the Gandhi’s petition of “Swaraj” which means self-rule.

2. Satyagraha in Gujarat

Backed up by the Indian National Congress, Patel started the village-to-village campaign to gain support for a statewide revolt by refusing to pay taxes. He formed a network of volunteers to work in the villages .

This revolt waved a huge tide, and lots of activists were arrested. Although, Vallabhbhai Patel negotiated with the Government and took them out of the jail. As a result, he emerged as a hero. In 1920 he was elected president of the newly formed Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee.

He supported Gandhi’s non-violence movement. He rejected all the British goods and adopted to use locally produced cotton clothes. He also worked extensively against alcoholism, untouchability, and caste discrimination, and for the empowerment of women.

Patel was elected Ahmedabad’s municipal president in 1922. He took the opportunity in serving the people. He concentrated on improving the infrastructure, supplying electricity, reformation in the school system.

In the year of 1927, the state affected by the torrential rainfall which led to floods. He arranged the flood relief centers to tackle the situation and extend the helping hand.

In 1923, when Gandhi was in prison, Vallabhbhai Patel was urged by members of Congress to lead the Satyagraha in Nagpur against a law that prevented the raising of the Indian flag. Patel negotiated with the Government to release all the prisoners and made them lift the ban against raising the national flag.

Later that year, he could reunite the villagers against paying taxes. Because of their wave of protests, the Government was compelled to withdraw the tax. This showed the ability of Sardar Patel to tie the huge number of people in one string.

When the Dandi Salt March was going on in full swing, Patel was arrested and put on trial without a witness. After the arrest of Gandhi, the movement got intensified until both of them were released.

After the release, he was elected the President of Congress of Karachi session, where Congress ratified the pact and committed itself to the defense of fundamental rights and civil liberties. He also protested against untouchability.

After the Round Table Conference in London went in vain, both Gandhi and Patel were arrested and were in the same jail. There, they built a close relationship between them. The mutual respect grew day by day, even after they have some arguments.

In 1936, it was seen that Subhas Chandra Bose, the then president of Congress, was more in favor of violent movement which contradicts the policy of Gandhi’s Movement. He led the other senior leaders to protest against it which resulted in the resignation of Bose.

Even after the death of his elder brother, he found that all his property was given to Bose. He raised some legal questions regarding the witness and signature. The legal case was won by Vallabhbhai Patel, and he handed over all the properties to Vithalbhai Memorial Trust.

3. Quit India Movement

After the start of World War II, he supported the decision to withdraw from the central and provisional legislature. He also speaks in favor of Indian Independence immediately after the war.

But when the British rejected the proposal, he ignited the fire in the nationalist’s mind by his speech to start Quit India Movement. He always pushed and gave an extra inch to the movement by his leadership, his speech which encouraged the entire nation.

4. Role in integrating India

Indian history will always remember him for his inhuman effort to build an integrated India after freedom. After the abolition of the British rule, all the provinces wanted to build their own country with their administrative system.

But Vallabhbhai Patel knew that their strength would be very less with so many small countries and always prone to attack from foreign countries. No one would have understood the importance of united India better than him.

After independence, Congress came up as a majority, but the Muslim League demanded a separate country for the Muslims. The proposal was criticized. Hence, Vallabhbhai Patel realized that the partition of India was the only option to tone down the outrage based on religion.

After the partition, both Congress and Muslim League wanted to integrate the provinces under their administration. In this matter, Vallabhbhai Patel played a vital role. He went from province to province to discuss the pros and cons regarding joining the Congress.

He convinced the provinces to sign the Instrument of Accession, which binds the state to be integrated with India. It was a humongous effort, which he alone did. On the other hand, the Muslim League led by Mr. Jinnah attacked Kashmir to force them to join Pakistan.

The then Hindu king requested military help for signing the Instrument of Accession. For this effort, he is called the “Iron Man of India”. In honor of his contribution, a statue called “Statue of Unity” was built, which is the tallest statue in the world.

His health declined in 1950. He had blood in his cough. His health got worsened further. He was frequently losing his consciousness and was confined in bed. He flew to Bombay for further treatment.

The huge crowd gathered in Santacruz Airport to greet him. To spare him from further stress, he landed in Juhu Aerodrome, where the then Chief Minister received him. After the second massive heart attack, he died on 15th December 1950 at Birla House in Bombay.
