Football history

Welcome to FootballHistory.org, a website about football history including competitions, teams and players.

The history of football (soccer)

Football (or soccer as the game is called in some parts of the world) has a long history. Football in its current form arose in England in the middle of the 19th century. But alternative versions of the game existed much earlier and are a part of the football history.

Early history and the precursors of football

The first known examples of a team game involving a ball, which was made out of a rock, occurred in old Mesoamerican cultures for over 3,000 years ago. It was by the Aztecs called Tchatali , although various versions of the game were spread over large regions. In some ritual occasions, the ball would symbolize the sun and the captain of the losing team would be sacrificed to the gods. A unique feature of the Mesoamerican ball game versions was a bouncing ball made of rubber – no other early culture had access to rubber. The first known ball game which also involved kicking took place In China in the 3rd and 2nd century BC under the name cuju . Cuju was played with a round ball (stitched leather with fur or feathers inside) on an area of a square. A modified form of this game later spread to Japan and was by the name of kemari practiced under ceremonial forms. Perhaps even older than cuju was Marn Gook , played by Aboriginal Australians and according to white emigrants in the 1800s, a ball game that primarily involving kicking. The ball was made by encased leaves or roots. The rules are mostly unknown, but as with many other early versions of the game, a chief feature seems to have been to keep the ball in the air. Other variety of ball games had been known from Ancient Greece. The ball was made by shreds of leather filled with hair (the first documents of balls filled with air are from the 7th century). Ball games had, however, a low status and was not included at the Panhellenic Games. In the Ancient Rome, games with balls were not included in the entertainment on the big arenas (amphitheaters), but occurred in exercises in the military by the name of Harpastum . It was the Roman culture that would bring football to the British island (Britannica). It is, however, uncertain in which degree the British people were influenced by this variety and in which degree they had developed their own variants.

The game of football takes its form

The most admitted story tells that the game was developed in England in the 12th century. In this century, games that resembled football were played on meadows and roads in England. Besides from kicks, the game involved also punches of the ball with the fist. This early form of football was also much more rough and violent than the modern way of playing. An important feature of the forerunners to football was that the games involved plenty of people and took place over large areas in towns (an equivalent was played in Florence from the 16th century where it was called Calcio ). The rampage of these games would cause damage on the town and sometimes death to the participants. These would be among the reasons for the proclamations against the game that finally was forbidden for several centuries. But the football-like games would return to the streets of London in the 17th century. It would be forbidden again in 1835, but at this stage the game had been established in the public schools.

It took, however, long time until the features of today’s football had been taken into practice. For a long time there was no clear distinction between football and rugby. There were also many variations concerning the size of the ball, the number of players and the length of a match.

The game was often played in schools and two of the predominant schools were Rugby and Eton. At Rugby the rules included the possibility to take up the ball with the hands and the game we today know as rugby has its origin from here. At Eton on the other hand the ball was played exclusively with the feet and this game can be seen as a close predecessor to the modern football. The game in Rugby was called “the running game” while the game in Eton was called “the dribbling game”.

An attempt to create proper rules for the game was done at a meeting in Cambridge in 1848, but a final solution to all questions of rules was not achieved. Another important event in the history of football came about in 1863 in London when the first Football association was formed in England. It was decided that carrying the ball with the hands wasn't allowed. The meeting also resulted in a standardization of the size and weight of the ball. A consequence of the London meeting was that the game was divided into two codes: association football and rugby. The game would, however, continue to develop for a long time and there was still much flexibility concerning the rules. For one thing, the number of players on the pitch could vary. Neither were uniforms used to distinguish the appearance of the teams. It was also common with players wearing caps – the header was yet to be a part of the game yet. Further reading: The development of football rules . Another important difference at this stage could be noticed between English and Scottish teams. Whereas the English teams preferred to run forward with the ball in a more rugby fashion, the Scottish chose to pass the ball between their players. It would be the Scottish approach that soon became predominant. The sport was at first an entertainment for the British working class. Unprecedented amounts of spectators, up to 30,000, would see the big matches in the late 19th century. The game would soon expand by British peoples who traveled to other parts of the world and as a result to the British colonization efforts. Especially in South America and India would the interest in football become big.

The first football clubs

Football clubs have existed since the 15th century, but unorganized and without official status. It is therefore hard to decide which the first football club was. Some historians suggest that it was the Foot-Ball Club formed 1824 in Edinburgh. Early clubs were often formed by former school students and the first of this kind was formed in Sheffield in 1855. The oldest among professional football clubs is the English club Notts County that was formed in 1862 and still exists today. An important step for the emergence of teams was the industrialization that led to larger groups of people meeting at places such as factories, pubs and churches. Football teams were established in the larger cities and the new railroads could bring them to other cities. In the beginning, football was dominated by public school teams, but later, teams consisting by workers would make up the majority. Another change was successively taking place when some clubs became willing to pay the best players to join their team. This would be the start of a long period of transition, not without friction, in which the game would develop to a professional level. The motivation behind paying players was not only to win more matches. In the 1880s the interest in the game has moved ahead to a level that tickets were sold to the matches. And finally, in 1885 professional football was legalized and three years later the Football League was established. During the first season, 12 clubs joined the league, but soon more clubs became interested and the competition would consequently expand into more divisions. For a long time, the British teams would be dominant. After some decades, clubs from Prague, Budapest and Sienna would be the primarily contenders to the British dominance. As with many things in history, women were for a long time excluded from participating in games. It was not before the late 19th century that women started to play football. The first official women's game took place in Inverness in 1888.

The first competitions

Twelve years later, in 1883, the first international tournament took place and included four national teams: England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Football was for a long time a British phenomenon, but it gradually spread to other European countries. The first game that took place outside Europe occurred in Argentina in 1867, but it was foreign British workers who were involved and not Argentinean citizens.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in 1904 and a foundation act was signed by representatives from France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. England and the other British countries did not join FIFA from the start, they had invented the game and saw no reason to subordinate to an association. Still, they joined in the following year, but would not partake in the World Cup until 1950. Domestic leagues occurred in many countries. The first was, as already mentioned, the English Football League which was established in 1888. The leagues would by time expand by more divisions, which were based on team performance. In 1908 would football for the first time be included as an official sport in the Olympic Games. Until the first FIFA World Cup was played in 1930, the Olympic Games football tournament would rank as the most prestigious on a national level. Women's football was not added until 1996.

Black players

As in many other sports the white male was predominant for a long time. In football black players started being present relatively early and in comparison with, for example, tennis, football has traditionally been known as a sport with a mix of black and white players.

In Britain, Andrew Watson is known to be the first black player, and he played in the Scottish club Queen’s Park in the 1880s.

A game of passion

Already in the late 19th century, Goodison Park was built in England in purpose of hosting football games. In 1894, the FA Cup final between Notts County and Bolton Wanderers was attended by 37,000 people. A milestone in the development of football stadiums is the construction of Maracanã Stadium. In the year of 1950 the imposing stadium in Rio de Janeiro was ready for almost 200,000 people. No other sport has seen stadiums of that capacity built to host its games. There have been two different traditions of fan culture on the arenas: the British and the South American. The British fans adopted the tradition of singing, the repertoire was inspired from pub and working songs among other areas. The South Americans on the other hand would adopt the carnival style which included firecrackers and fireworks, and also the modern phenomena of Bengali fires. Fans in other countries have later adopted a mixture of these traditions.

The great modern competitions

No other sport event besides the Summer Olympic Games can today measure itself with the FIFA World Cup . The first edition of the FIFA World Cup was played in 1930 in Uruguay and has since then returned every fourth year (with two exceptions due to the Second World War). In 1991 the first World Cup for women was held in China and has since then also returned every fourth year. Today the biggest global tournament for clubs is the Champions League (played since 1992), the former European Cup (1955–1991).

Globalization of the biggest sport in the world

In the late 19th century, only a few national football teams existed; England and Scotland had the first active teams that played games against each other in the 1870s. Today there are 211 national associations included in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world governing body of the sport. Another proof of the globalization could be seen in the increase of nations participating in the World Cup qualifiers: from 32 in 1934 to over 200 in 2014. The world regions have been divided into six confederations: Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Union des Associations Européennes de Football (UEFA), The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL). Football is definitely a global sport and without comparison the biggest in the world. A quote from David Goldblatt's book The Ball is Round present one answer:

It offers the spotlight for individual brilliance while relishing the defiance and heart of collective endeavor. It has staged tragedy and comedy, epic and pantomime, unsophisticated music hall and inaccessible experimental performances. It does imperious triumph, lucky escapes, impossible comebacks and stubborn stalemates. It captures the brilliance of unpredictability, the uncertainty of the human heart and human skill, of improvisation and chance.

The name of the game: football or soccer?

In most parts of the world, football is used as the name for the “chess of the green pitch”, the biggest sport in the world. In the United States and Canada, however, soccer is used instead as a distinction from American football. A more formal name sometimes used is association football, but in popular speech, it is either football or soccer.

Football History: Everything you need to know

An old fashioned football

The history of football (or soccer if you are in the USA) is a complex one, but what is it you really need to know about one of the world’s most-loved and supported sports? We’ve detailed some of the key facts about football’s history so you can understand how the sport has developed since day dot.

Where it all started

The origins of football can be split into two categories: contemporary history and classical history.

The contemporary history: WHERE & WHEN WAS FOOTBALL INVENTED?

Football’s modern origins began in England more than 100 years ago, in 1863 . Rugby football and association football, once the same thing, went their separate ways and the Football Association, the first official governing body for the sport, was established.

Going back in time

History books dictate that people having had a brilliant time kicking a ball around for thousands of years, but not all those games would be recognisable as what we consider football today. But the different periods of football, or sports involving kicking a ball in more accurate terms, were all crucial to the development of the game. Without the variation experienced over the years, we may have never had football by modern standards.

The furthest back we can track football’s history is to China, as early as the third century BC, where there are mentions of a game resembling football in military manuals. The Han Dynasty played a game called Tsu’ Chu, which involved kicking a ball through a 30-40cm opening and into what we’d now see as a goal make of canes with a net attached to it. The ball used during these games was made from leather and filled with hair and feathers.

The Greek’s invented ‘Harpastum’, a game which used a ball smaller than that used in football but that had similar rules to the modern game. Play was on a rectangular field marked by boundaries and a centre line and the aim was for one team to get the ball over their competitor’s boundary line.

Based on what we know about the history of ball games where use of feet dominates, we can see clearly the affect different cultures and variations have had on the game we play today.

Britain and football

The PFSA's history of football

Despite opposition for the game, football thrived in Britain from the eight to 19th centuries, however, a standardised version of the game was still a rarity as regional versions often gained favour. These different versions of the game were neatened up to eventually become association football, rugby football and Gaelic football, all of which contributed to the contemporary equivalent of the game we play today.

When thinking of the Sunday leagues we now play, the best iteration is village vs village games where villages gathered and their teams played against each other, usually on unmarked fields.

The standardisation of the ball

Even though the official rules of modern football were dictated in 1863 when the Football Association was established, the specifications of the ball were not standardised for another eight years. Up until then, both parties playing would agree what ball was to be used amongst themselves.

Why is a match 90 mins long?

The standard length of game in football is 90 minutes. This duration was established for the first time in 1866 when London and Sheffield played against one another. For one reason or another, from here onward, 90 minutes was set as the standard duration for football games. Although, modern underage games do not use the 90-minute format.

Football, the global phenomenon

It wasn’t until the start of the 19th century that playing football in schools became the norm, starting in public schools. While rules did not differ greatly to the standard, many schools would come up with their own variation of the game depending on the grounds they had available. For example, if a school only had a concrete playground, which was true of many schools, they had to work with what they had and would adapt the boundaries accordingly.

Eight years after it was founded, The Football Association had established 50 member clubs. That’s when, in 1872, the FA Cup was born, with the first championship in the works by 1888. At this time, Europe still hadn’t embraced the contemporary variant of football, which helped to define football as a ‘very British sport.’ However, preceding this in 1872 was the first ‘international’ football match between England and Scotland which attracted enormous crowds, much like today’s games.

The spread of football outside the UK was slow at first, but it soon reached every corner of the world. The Netherlands and Denmark formed their own football associations in 1889, followed by New Zealand in 1891, Argentina in 1893, and Chile, Switzerland and Belgium in 1895. Italy was next, forming its association in 1898. Behind it was Germany and Uruguay in 1900. The next decade would see Hungary and Finland form associations, too.

The Founding of FIFA

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was established in Paris in 1904 . Its founding members included Belgium, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Stanley Rous, who went on to become FIFA President, wrote the laws of football and put rational to them in 1886. They were re-drafted in 1997.

By the 1950s, after the Second World War, there were more than 73 FIFA members.

How many football clubs are there in the world?

At the end of the 2007 FIFA Congress, FIFA had 208 members throughout the world. It’s almost impossible to tell how many football clubs there are in the world, but we can tell you that there are more than 600 clubs in England alone. The mathematics say that there are hundreds of thousands of clubs worldwide, and that number’s ever increasing.

Positions [ edit | edit source ]

Learning to play the game [ edit | edit source ].

The game is played on a large field, which has two goals equally apart and positioned. On each half is a team. There is also the sidelines, which go around the perimeter pitch. If the ball goes out of the line on the sides of the pitch, the opposing team that did not knock it out gets a throw in. If it happens on the goal-lines (the line next to the goal), it changes. If the team that defends that side got it out, the opponents get a corner kick where the kick it from a corner. If the team that was attacking that side gets it out, the defenders get a goal kick, where they can kick from the goal.

Playing the game [ edit | edit source ]

After spending a few weeks learning these basic skills, get into a game. Use a large area of land, set up some goal posts, and get 11 players on each team or 5. 11 is recommended. Use different colored strips for each team. Each team also needs one captain, which is normally the most experienced and skilled player, a player of any position can be the captain

Each team has a formation, where they should be mostly positioned when playing - they are free to move around, though. When playing the 5-a-side version of the game, all players of one team except the goalkeeper should be in the other players half when a player of their team scores. [1] The ref should kick off by a some kind of a draw, like a coin toss.

He will then place the ball in the middle and let the team which has kick off get the first move. The game should go on for 90 minutes. When it gets to 45 minutes. It becomes half time, and the players can rest for 15 minutes which doesn't count onto the game time, for the second half of the game for another 45 minutes. At 90 minutes, which ever teams scored the most goals win. If it's the same number it goes into a draw.

In Australia, balls were made from the skins of rats, the bladders of large animals, and twisted hair. Unfortunately, there are no rules of the game remained. In North America, there also was the ancestor of football, the game was called “pasuckuakohowog”, which means “they gathered to play ball with their feet.” Usually, the games took place on the beaches, the players tried to score the ball into the goal about half a mile wide, the pitch itself was twice as long. The number of game players reached 1000 people.

Each football team shall consist of a maximum of eleven players (that is how many can be on the pitch at the same time), one of which is the goalkeeper and he is the only player who is allowed to play with his hands within the penalty area at his own goal.

How many players are in the team? The team consists of 11 players: ten outfield players and one goalkeeper.

football team

A football match consists of two halves of 45 minutes each. There is a 15-minute half-time break between halves, after which the teams change goals. This is done so that the teams are in equal condition.

The football game is won by the team that has scored more goals against the opponent.

If the teams finished the match with the same goal score, then a tie is fixed, or two additional halves of 15 minutes are assigned. If the additional time ends with a tied score, then a series of penalty shootouts is assigned.

An 11-meter kick or penalty is the most serious punishment in football and is carried out from the appropriate mark. When performing an 11-meter kick, the goalkeeper shall obligatory keep the goal.

Penalty shootouts in football are performed according to the following rules: teams carry out 5 shots on the opponent’s goal from a distance of 11 meters, all shots shall be carried out by different players. If, after 5 shots, the penalty score is equal, then the teams continue to take penalty kicks until a winner is revealed.

penalty in football

It is considered that the player is in the offside position if he is closer to the opponent’s goal line than the ball and the second to last player of the opponent, including the goalkeeper.

Offside position in football

In order not to get into an offside position, players shall adhere to the following rules:

  • it is forbidden to interfere in the game (touching the ball that was passed to him or which touched a team mate);
  • it is forbidden to obstruct the opposing player;
  • it is forbidden to gain an advantage due to one’s position (touching the ball that bounces off the goalpost or crossbar or from an opposing player).

Football Lawes of the Game allow outfield players to touch the ball with any part of the body except their hands. For a handball, the team is awarded a direct free-kick or a penalty kick, which is performed by the player of the opposing team.

The Laws of the Game of handball in football include two other very important points:

  • an accidental hit of a ball in a hand is not a foul;
  • instinctive defense against the ball is not a foul.

The yellow and red cards are signs that the referee shows the players for fouls and unsporting behavior.

The yellow card is of a precautionary nature and is given to the player in the following cases:

  • for intentional handball;
  • for play for time;
  • for breaking up the attack;
  • for a kick before the whistle/exit from the wall (direct free kick);
  • for a kick after a whistle;
  • for rough play;
  • for unsporting behavior;
  • for disputes with the referee;
  • for simulation;
  • for leaving or entering the play without the permission of the referee.

The red card in football is shown by the referee for extremely rough fouls or unsporting behavior. The player who received the red card must leave the field of play before the end of the match.

The standard pitch for big football is a rectangular area in which the goal lines (front lines) are necessarily shorter than the touchlines. Next, we will consider the parameters of the football pitch.

The size of the football pitch in meters is not clearly regulated, but there are certain boundary indicators. For matches of the national level, the standard length of a football pitch from goal to goal should be within 90-120 meters and the width – within 45-90 meters. The area of the football pitch ranges from 4,050 m 2 to 10,800 m 2 . For comparison, 1 hectare = 10,000 m 2 . For international matches, the length of the touchlines should not go beyond the interval of 100-110 meters, and the length of the goal lines – beyond 64-75 meters. There are FIFA recommended football pitch dimensions of 105 by 68 meters (7,140 square meters).

How long is a pitch? The length of the football pitch from goal to goal should be within 90-120 meters.

Marking of the field is carried out with the same lines, the width of the marking should not exceed 12 centimeters (lines are included in the areas that they limit). The side line or edge of a football field is commonly called the “touchline”.

  • Halfway line is a line that divides the field into two halves. In the middle of the halfway line is the centre spot with a diameter of 0.3 meters. The circumference around the centre spot is 9.15 meters. A kick or a pass from the centre spot start both halves of the match, as well as additional time. After each goal scored, the ball is also set to the centre spot.
  • Goal-line in football is drawn on the pitch parallel to the crossbar.
  • Football goal area is a line that is drawn 5.5 meters from the outside of the goalpost. Perpendicular to the goal line, there are two lines 5.5 meters long drawn directed inward the field. Their end points are connected by a line parallel to the goal line.
  • Penalty area is composed of points at a distance of 16.5 m from the inside of each goalpost, at a right angle to the goal line, two lines are drawn inward the field. At a distance of 16.5 m, these lines are connected by another line parallel to the goal line. In the middle of the goal line and at a distance of 11 meters from it, a penalty spot is applied, it is marked with a solid circle with a diameter of 0.3 meters. Within the penalty area, the goalkeeper may play with his hands.
  • Corner sectors are arcs with a radius of 1 meter centered at the corners of a football field. This line forms a limited area for corner kicks. In the corners of the field, flags are installed with a height of at least 1.5 meters and a cloth size of 35×45 centimeters.

Marking of the field is carried out using lines, the width of which should be the same and not exceed 12 centimeters. The image below shows the marking layout of the football pitch.

pitch marking

The goal is located exactly in the middle of the goal line. The standard football goal dimensions are as follows:

  • the length or width of the goal in big football — the distance between the vertical posts — 7.73 meters;
  • the height of the goal — the distance from the pitch to the crossbar — 2.44 meters.

The diameter of the posts and the crossbar should not exceed 12 centimeters. The goal is made of wood or metal and painted white, and also has the shape of a rectangle, ellipse, square or circle in cross-section.

football goal

The goal net in football must be consistent with the size of the goal and must be strong. Football nets of the following size are usually used: 2.50 x 7.50 x 1.00 x 2.00 m.

The standard design of the football pitch is as follows:

  • Grass turf.
  • Substrate of sand and gravel.
  • Heating pipes.
  • Drainage pipes.
  • Aeration pipes.

The turf for the football pitch can be natural or artificial. Grass turf requires additional care, namely watering and fertilizing. Grass turf does not allow to take more than two games per week. The grass is brought to the field in special rolls of turf cover. Very often on the football pitch, one can see the grass of two colors (striped pitch), it is due to the peculiarities of turf care. When mowing the turf, the car first goes one way, and then the other way, and the grass lies in different directions (multidirectional turf mowing). This is done for the convenience of determining distances and offsides, as well as for beauty. The height of the grass on the football pitch is usually 2.5 — 3.5 cm. The maximum speed of the ball in football today is 214 km/h.

The artificial turf for the football pitch is a carpet made of synthetic material. Each blade of grass is not just a strip of plastic, but a product of complex shape. For the artificial turf to be suitable for play, it is covered with a filler of sand and rubber crumb.

What ball is used for playing football? A professional soccer ball consists of three main components: bladder, backing, and cover. The bladder is usually made of synthetic butyl or natural latex. The backing is the inner layer between the cover and the bladder. The backing directly affects the quality of the ball. The thicker it is, the better the ball. The backing is usually made of polyester or pressed cotton. The cover consists of 32 synthetic waterproof panels, 12 of which are pentagonal, 20 are hexagonal.

ball

Ball dimensions:

  • circumference — 68-70 cm;
  • weight – no more than 450 g.

The speed of the ball in football reaches 200 km/h.

The basic elements of a player’s football equipment are:

  • Shirt or T-shirt with sleeves.
  • Shorts. If undershorts are used, then they should be the same color.
  • Shin guards. Shall be completely covered with stockings and provide the proper level of protection.
  • Football boots.
Why do football players need stockings? Stockings perform a protective function, supporting the leg and protecting it against minor injuries. Thanks to them, the shin guards are kept.

football kit

The goalkeeper's football kit shall differ in color from the kit of other players and referees.

goalkeeper's football kit

Players shall not wear any equipment that could be dangerous to them or other players, such as jewelry and wrist watches.

What do football players wear under shorts? Under shorts are tight-fitting compression shorts. The color and length of the undershorts should not differ from the color and length of the shorts.
  • Kick-off. A kick-off in football is used in three cases: to start the game, to start the second half and after a goal is scored. All players of the team performing the kick-off shall be in their half of the field of play and all opposing players — at a distance of not less than nine meters from the ball. The player performing the kick-off is not allowed to touch the ball again before other players do.
  • Goal kick. Getting the ball back in play after it left the goal line (on the side of the post or above the crossbar), through the fault of the player of the attacking team.
  • Throw-in. Performed by an outfield player after the ball has crossed the touchline and left the field of play. Throw-in is taken from the point where the ball became “out of play”. The player performing the throw-in must face the field of play standing on or behind the touchline. At the time of the throw, both feet of the player must touch the ground. The ball is brought in play without a signal from the referee.
  • Corner kick. Getting the ball back in play from the corner sector. Awarded to players of the defending team who kicked the ball out of play over the goal line.
  • Direct and indirect free kicks. Awarded for intentionally touching the ball with hand or using rude techniques against players of the opposing team.
  • Penalty kick (11-meter kick).
  • Offside position.

The referees monitor compliance with the set rules at the football pitch. A referee and two assistants are appointed for each match.

refereeing in football

The duties of a referee include:

  • Match timing.
  • Recording match events.
  • Ensuring ball compliance with the requirements.
  • Ensuring compliance of players’ equipment with the requirements.
  • Ensuring the absence of unauthorized persons on the pitch.
  • Ensuring getting away/taking out of injured players from the pitch.
  • Providing the relevant bodies with a match report, including information on all disciplinary action taken against players and/or team officials, as well as on all other incidents that occurred before, during or after the match.

Referee’s rights:

  • to stop, to temporarily break or to terminate the match in case of any foul, interference by an external party, players’ injury;
  • to take action against team officials behaving incorrectly;
  • to continue the game until the ball is out of play if the player, in his opinion, received only a minor injury;
  • to continue the game when the team against which the foul was committed benefits from such a foul (remains with the ball), and to punish for the initial foul if the team did not use the intended advantage;
  • to punish a player for a more serious foul if he simultaneously commits more than one foul;
  • to act based on the recommendation of his assistants and fourth official.

The competitions are organized by the federation, for each tournament its Regulations are drawn up, which usually prescribes the entry list, the tournament schedule, and the rules for determining the winners.

National team competitions

  • World Cup is the main international football competition. The championship is held once every four years, male national teams of FIFA countries of all continents can take part in the tournament.

‘Young Sheldon’ Is One of TV’s Most Popular Shows. So Why Did It Just End?

The “Big Bang Theory” spinoff aired its last episodes Thursday night, but the franchise will continue on CBS this fall.

This article includes spoilers for the “Young Sheldon” series finale.

In last week’s episode of the CBS sitcom “Young Sheldon,” a laid-back, beer-drinking Texas high school football coach named George Cooper (Lance Barber) says goodbye to his family and goes to work. He never comes home: George dies of a heart attack later that day.

The tragedy sets up the series’s last two episodes, which premiered Thursday night on CBS. They are about what happens when someone so steady, so reliable and so unassuming is just … gone.

A spinoff of “The Big Bang Theory,” the long-running CBS hit, “Young Sheldon” has been steady, reliable and unassuming over its seven seasons. This warm family sitcom, which fills in the back story of the “Big Bang Theory” breakout character Sheldon Cooper — played by Jim Parsons in the original and Iain Armitage in the prequel — has quietly been one of TV’s most-watched shows since it debuted in 2017.

And now it, too, is gone. The series finale takes Sheldon from the small town of Medford, Texas, where he attended high school at 9 and college at 11 as his family tried to understand and accommodate his genius, to the California Institute of Technology, where “The Big Bang Theory” is set. The episode included appearances by Parsons and Mayim Bialik, whose character, Amy, marries Sheldon in the original show.

The franchise will continue this fall with another spinoff: “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.” It will follow Sheldon’s good ol’ boy older brother George Jr. (Montana Jordan) and his wife, Mandy (Emily Osment), as they raise their baby daughter.

“Young Sheldon” was a smash from the start, and while its network TV audience has shrunk (just like most every other show’s), its episodes elsewhere have drawn newer, younger viewers . Reruns air on the cable network TBS almost daily. Netflix licensed the show late last year, and it has since appeared regularly on that service’s self-reported Top 10 most-streamed TV series.

Yet despite its pervasiveness in TikTok memes , “Young Sheldon” has never been much of a cultural phenomenon. Television critics rarely write about it, and the Emmys have ignored it entirely — it has yet to get a single nomination. “The Big Bang Theory,” one of TV’s most-watched shows for much of its 12-season run, which ended in 2019, had a mixed critical reputation. But it did get press coverage, and was a legitimate Emmy contender, earning four nominations for best comedy series and picking up four wins for Parsons.

The “Young Sheldon” finale, meanwhile, came and went on Thursday night without much advance hype. Unless you regularly watch shows on CBS, you may not have known it was ending.

You may also be wondering: If it’s so popular, why is it ending?

In a phone interview, Steven Molaro, who created “Young Sheldon” with Chuck Lorre, and Steve Holland, an executive producer who has been a writer on the show since Season 2, explained that the series has always had an expiration date. This is because the story they inherited from “The Big Bang Theory” established that Sheldon began attending graduate school at Caltech at 14, the same year his father died.

The “Young Sheldon” team delayed the inevitable once, by holding the characters of Sheldon and his twin sister, Missy (Raegan Revord), at the same age for two seasons. But that trick could not be repeated indefinitely.

“The premise of the show is that an exceptional young kid is thrust into a world where everyone is older than him,” Holland said. “But as soon as Iain aged and Sheldon aged, he didn’t look that out of place anymore, even in college.”

So when Holland and Molaro sat down with Lorre to plot out Season 7 after the writers’ strike was settled, they decided their prequel had reached its natural conclusion. The tight post-strike production timeline meant they had to inform the cast about the decision on a group Zoom call, which surprised some of them. (In a Variety interview , Annie Potts, who plays Sheldon’s “Meemaw,” described her initial reaction as “shocked” and “ambushed.”) But whatever mixed feelings the cast may have had about the series coming to an end, it doesn’t show in their performances in the final two episodes, which strike the usual “Young Sheldon” balance of gentle good humor and soft sentimental pangs.

In the penultimate episode, “Funeral” (which aired Thursday night right before the finale), the Cooper family struggles with saying goodbye to George, with Sheldon revisiting his last moments with his father and thinking of the things he could have said to him but didn’t.

The episode ends on a poignant note, as Sheldon’s devoutly religious mother, Mary (Zoe Perry), rages at God at the memorial service before Meemaw steps in to lighten the mood. (She jokes that no one is sadder about George dying than the Lone Star beer company.) Sheldon, still lost in his own head, imagines the heartfelt eulogy he is too numb to give.

The finale, “Memoir,” tells a more typical “Young Sheldon” story, about Mary trying to get Sheldon baptized before he leaves for college. In framing scenes, the older Sheldon and Amy argue about his parenting of their own children, underlining one of the show’s main themes: that Sheldon’s parents, while dealing with all the usual messes of everyday life, did the best they could to take care of him. The episode closes with a shot of the 14-year-old Sheldon at Caltech, connecting everything back to “The Big Bang Theory”; the adult Sheldon is working as a Caltech physicist when that series begins.

Holland said Lorre pitched the idea of having Parsons and Bialik appear in the finale to make the episode feel a bit more “significant.” (Parsons, who is also an executive producer of “Young Sheldon,” has been the show’s narrator from the beginning, but this is his first on-camera appearance.) As for the differences between the last two episodes — one heavy, one lighter — Molaro said they wanted something “a little more positive and upbeat” for their ending.

“Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” which was created by Lorre, Molaro and Holland, will be a multicamera sitcom shot with a live audience, like “The Big Bang Theory.” (“Young Sheldon” is a single-camera series with no audience, a choice Molaro said was made to “let the show feel like its own thing.”) They hope to have some “Young Sheldon” regulars appear as guest stars, if they figure out how to do that without turning the new show into what Holland called “Older Young Sheldon.”

As for the legacy of “Young Sheldon,” that will now depend largely on whether it remains as popular as it has been on Netflix, where Molaro said the show is being discovered by kids who have never been in the habit of watching prime-time network TV. Despite the lack of critical buzz, “Young Sheldon” has always been good family television, with a likable cast of youngsters and showbiz veterans helping to tell slice-of-life stories that push deeper than some viewers may expect into topics like religious hypocrisy, marital strife and how it feels to share a household with someone both irritatingly eccentric and astonishingly brilliant.

The final episodes of “Young Sheldon” were designed to hit many of the notes that the show had played so well during its run, ending with a finale that Holland wanted to have “a little bit of humor and a little bit of hope.” The series finishes in an understated and touching way — going out just as it came in.
