Introduction to Punjabi!

Punjab, the “Land of Five Rivers,” is home to a rich and diverse civilization that dates back to prehistoric times. Punjabi is the tenth most commonly spoken language in the world and one of the most respected languages in South Asia. More than 130 million around the world speak this language. The Punjabi language is also prominent in South Asian communities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and other Asian and African countries.

A Brief History of Punjab

Punjab is a state in northwest India along the borders of India and Pakistan. “Punjab” is derived from the Persian word “Punj” meaning five and “ab” meaning water. Hence, the literal meaning of Punjab is the “land of five rivers.” The region of Punjab has a rich history due to its geographic location.  As it was the primary entry point into India from abroad, Punjab became the target of various invasions by foreigners, including the Persians, Greeks, Aryans, Egyptians, Afghans, and Mughals. Punjab gradually became a melting pot of different races and ethnic backgrounds, and the distinctive culture and heritage we see today is mainly due to it being the hub of invading empires throughout history. Prior to the partition of 1947, there existed one large Punjab province, encompassing the modern-day Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh, and the present Pakistani state Punjab. Due to it being the home of people of many different religions, the province became the focal point of the partition of India and Pakistan. The partition split the former British Indian Empire into two independent nations: the Western section, consisting predominantly of Muslims, became what is known today as Pakistan, while the Eastern section became India. The partition also split the Punjab province into two, shared by the two newly-formed nations.

Punjabi Language

The people of Punjab, regardless of residing in Eastern or Western Punjab, are known as Punjabis and speak the same language as well, with some variation. Sanskrit is the mother language of the northern region of India from which many languages, including Punjabi, have arisen. Punjabi is the successor to a medieval language Sauraseni Prakrit, which was a language that stemmed from Sanskrit. The dialect of Punjabi emerged from the Sauraseni Apabhramsa. The literacy era of the language flourished during the Bhakti movement. The Punjabi language has many similarities to other languages.  In fact, Punjabi has absorbed numerous words from both Persian and Arabic languages, an indication of the Muslim presence in Punjab from countless invasions and occupations of the province. It is because of these invasions by Persian/Arabic groups that Punjabi has two different forms of the script, Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi. Gurmukhi is influenced by the Sanskrit, whereas the Shahmukhi script is influenced by the Arabic Abjad. This manual will focus on the Gurmukhi script. This blossoming script of Punjabi has dialectal differences based on the region the language is spoken in. Punjabi shares the characteristic of various other languages in that it has different dialects in different geographic regions. Today, over 28 million people speak the eight known dialects.  Majhi is spoken in the heartland of Punjab, spanning from Pakistani Punjab to Indian Punjab. Pothowari is known to be mainly in North Pakistan Punjab.  Jhangochi, also known as Rachnavi, is the eldest and most idiosyncratic dialect of Punjabi, spoken mostly in Pakistan Punjab.  Another dialect mostly known to the Pakistan area of Punjab is Shahpuri, spoken mainly in towns surrounding Shahpur. Hindko is spoken mostly in the Northern Punjab region of Pakistan as well as the North-West Frontier Province. Malwi, Doabi, and Pwadhi are all spoken in Indian Punjab. Malwi is spoken mainly in central and southern Punjab, whereas Doabi is the dialect used in the lands between two rivers (hence “do-ab-i”). Pwadhi is the major dialect spoken in the southern regions of Punjab, in and around the Haryana state. Punjabi has a syllabic script, which means words lack letters and are composed of syllables instead.  The script is made in such a way that each syllable’s sound can be altered with the use of another character in the script, known as the modifier. The script consists of 35 characters, each of which is unique in sound and expression.  This precise system is known as “Painti” (literally meaning thirty-five) and is designed to have patterns in terms of pronunciation and use.

• ਮਨੋਕਲਪਿਤ (Manokalpit Lekh) ਜਾਂ ਕਾਲਪਨਿਕ ਲੇਖ (Kalpanik Lekh): ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਵਨਾਤਮਕ ਲੇਖ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਹੜੇ ਲੇਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੇਖਕ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਕਲਪਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਲੇਖ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਕਲਪਨਾ ਤੇ ਅਧਾਰਿਤ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਲਪਨਿਕ ਲੇਖ ਕਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਭਾਵਨਾਤਮਕ ਲੇਖ (Bhavnatmak Lekh) ਦਾ ਆਧਾਰ ਜਜ਼ਬੇ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਵੇਂ : ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਮੁੱਖਮੰਤਰੀ ਹੋਵਾਂ, ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਹੋਵਾਂ ਆਦਿ।

• ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਲੇਖ (Vigyan Lekh)
• ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਲੇਖ (Vidiarthi Lekh)

• ਲੇਖ ਰਚਨਾ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਲੇਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਉਣਾ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ।
• ਲੇਖ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ, ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਲ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।
• ਜੇਕਰ ਲੋੜ ਪਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਲੇਖ ਰਚਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਖਾਣ, ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਣ ਸਮੇਂ ਸੰਤਾ, ਗੁਰੂਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਕਹੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ, ਸ਼ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
• ਲੇਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਮ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋਵੇ। ਆਮ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਖਬਾਰਾਂ, ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਸਪੀਚਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
• ਲੇਖ ਦੀ ਲੜੀਬੱਧਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੁ ਰੱਖੋ। ਲੇਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ, ਸਮੇਂ ਜਾਂ ਤੱਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ  ਉਪਰ ਥੱਲੇ ਨਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ।
• ਅਗਰ ਲੇਖ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਲਿਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਅਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਮਨਮੋਹਕ ਲੱਗੇ।
• ਲੇਖ ਦਾ ਆਰੰਭ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਮੱਧ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਲੱਗ ਅਲੱਗ ਪੈਰਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੈਡਿੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਅੱਛਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
• ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ ਦਾ ਖਾਸ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ ,ਲੋੜ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਵਧਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਸਰਾਮ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।

Punjab in History and Historiography: An Introduction

This volume seeks to consider the notion of Punjabiyat , a loosely defined term often used to describe a sentiment of belonging or attachment to Punjab and/or the foundations of a shared, cross-religious, cross-caste, cross-class culture. Is there an ‘idea of Punjab’ or ‘ideas of Punjab’ that help ground—as Punjabi—people from the region, now scattered across the globe? Or that connect those in Indian and Pakistani Punjab, divided by what is for most of them an impermeable border? In other words, despite political, social, religious—indeed, historical—differences, are there notions of Punjabiyat /Punjabiness that constitute Punjab as a region conceptually in history, culture, and practice? The essays in this volume, through their careful analyses of aspects of Punjabi social, cultural, political, and religious history, taken collectively suggest that there are, indeed.

Part of the impetus for this collection is that volumes on Punjabi culture/s or histories—especially of its modern period—have not been commonplace in academic circles. One is more likely to come across titles that delve into specific aspects of its culture or people, for instance works on ‘Sikh religion’ or the ‘Sikh people’, ‘Islamic identity’ or ‘Hindu reform’ in their Punjabi regional context. Such endeavours are entirely valid and reasonable, and perhaps even necessary, but it is difficult to comprehend the elision if not erasure of Punjabi identity from academic writing. Given that it has been easier for diasporic Punjabis to evoke a much wider and an inclusive Punjabi identity than it has been for Punjabis residing in India or Pakistan, one wonders if this elision is yet another result of the political divisions that have marked Punjab’s twentieth-century history? Have these divisions, whether of 1947 or the postcolonial period, made other identity markers more apt or emotionally more satisfying than the idea of belonging/originating/associating with a region? Or could it be that Punjabi identity is particularly open to appropriation, and even incorporation within other identities—for instance Sikh identity in Indian Punjab?

ਸਮਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਨ:- ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਰਾਜਕਤਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਸਾਡੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਉਲਝਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਪੁੰਨਤਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ | ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਨ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਤਰਜੀਹ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਸਹੀ ਸਮੇਂ ‘ਤੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਮੇਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਦੀ ਰੁਟੀਨ ਨੂੰ ਡਾਇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਉਪਯੋਗੀ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ ਅਤੇ ਕਿੰਨਾ। ਸਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ, ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਬਣਾਓ, ਉਸ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰੋ, ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਉਸ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕਰੋ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਨ ਸਾਡੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਰਜ ਦੀ ਤਰਤੀਬ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਤਰਜੀਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਤੈਅ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਸਾਡੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੀਮਤ ਹੈ:- ਸਾਡੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਾਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸੀਮਿਤ ਸਮੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਮਾਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੇ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਗੰਭੀਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੀਮਤ ਸਮੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਜ਼ੂਲ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਡਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹਰ ਸੂਝਵਾਨ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਡੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸਬੰਧ ਸਮੇਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਲ ਵੀ ਵਾਧਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਸੰਭਵ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਰੀਬ, ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ, ਅਮੀਰ, ਮੂਰਖ, ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਸਮਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਅਸਲੀ ਪਛਾਣ।

ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ:- ਸਮਾਂ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਆਰੰਭ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਅੰਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਕਰ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਇਹ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਵਾਪਿਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਮਾਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਕਿ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਵੱਲ। ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ, ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਕੰਮ, ਸੌਣ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ, ਜਾਗਣ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ, ਕਸਰਤ, ਭੋਜਨ ਆਦਿ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੋਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ-ਕਦਾਈਂ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਆਦਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮੁਲਤਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਦੀ ਰਚਨਾਤਮਕ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰੋ।

ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਾਡੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਦੀ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਸਾਡੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਦਭਾਵਨਾ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੇ, ਸੰਤ ਮਹਾਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਹਾਂਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਕਈ ਯੁੱਗਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸਨ, ਉਹ ਵੀ ਯਾਦ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਪਛਾਣੀ ਸੀ, ਉਸਨੇ ਹਰ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ‘ਤੇ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਉਹ ਘੜੀ ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਚੱਲੋ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਚੱਲੀਏ ਪਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਨਹੀਂ .ਚਲਣਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਚੱਲਣ ਨਾਲ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੋਨੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਵੱਧ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੇਂ ‘ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਮਾਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਮਾਂ ਇੰਨਾ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਡੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾ ਵੀ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਵੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਪਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਲਈ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਕਰੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਡਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਕਮੀ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।

ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਆਵੇਗਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਲਈ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਕਮੀ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।

ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੀ, ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਕਦੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਬੰਦ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਬੰਦਤਾ ਹੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਫ਼ਲਤਾ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਚੱਜੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ : ਸਾਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਅਣਜਾਣ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਜੋ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਮਿਸਾਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਵੱਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਉਹ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਉਮਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕੇਗਾ।

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਕਿਸ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਖਾਸ ਉਮਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਉਮਰ ਤੱਕ ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਬੋਝ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂਗੇ।

ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ : ਸਾਨੂੰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਲੇਖ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪਾਠ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ ਅਕਸਰ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਨ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ ਕਲਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਮਨੋਰੰਜਨ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸਾਡੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੋਣਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਨਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਨੁਕਸਾਨਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਤੁਲਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਜਿਹੜੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕਰਨੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਾਲ ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ-ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਰਹੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਬੋਝ ਨਾ ਲੱਗੇ।

ਕੁਝ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਾਲ ਭਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕਰਨਗੇ ਪਰ ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਗਲਤ ਧਾਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਾੜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਇਹ ਆਦਤ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕਰੀਅਰ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਨੁਕਸਾਨਦੇਹ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਸਿਖਾਉਣ। ਅਜਿਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੇਡਣ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਿਰ ਸਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

Where Did The Punjabi Language Come From?

The Punjabi language is classified as one of the members of the Indo-Aryan subgroup of the Indo-European language family. The word Punjabi is derived from Panj-āb, which means “Five Rivers” in Persian and refers to the five main tributaries of the eastern Indus River.

Furthermore, the name of the region was presented by the Turkish-Persian conquerors in South Asia. Therefore, it translates the Sanskrit name Panchanada in the area, which means “land of five rivers.”

What Does It Mean To Have a Child? We Should Be Taking That Question Seriously.

T he question of begetting —that is, to bring (a child) into existence by the process of reproduction—is one that we routinely ask each other. It is also a question that young people are asking themselves with increasing urgency, as many wonder if, in an age of climate crisis and existential uncertainty, it’s still OK to have kids. What does it mean to create another person, not knowing what their life will be like?

In response, every so often an article or essay is published to the extent that having children is an intrinsically hopeful act; that not to have them is to give in to despair ; that this is how we express gratitude for existence; that “the meaning of life is to pass it on.”

This is interesting—not just for what it suggests about begetting (that this is a question not up for consideration), but for what it suggests about hope and meaning; about our lives, and what it would mean for them to have purpose. We tend to speak in binaries such as light/dark, optimism/pessimism, hope/despair . Presenting the problem in this manner—where to beget is to be hopeful, while anything else is automatically the opposite—is to suggest a stark choice: either you are on the side of life, or you have already given up.

But is reality truly colored in such stark tones? Are our lives, our hearts, our motives?

Consider a person living through the through the atrocities of a global war, and yet expressing an indomitable gratitude “for everything.” Consider another, convinced that life is bad and non-existence preferable, who nevertheless comes to long for a child and does not keep themselves from creating it. Consider a third who, deeply in love with life, nevertheless believesit would be wrong to bring another person into it—a person liable to suffering; a person who has not asked to be created.

These examples are all real and point towards a simple truth: that the dichotomy is a false one. There are ways to be grateful for life that are compatible with not begetting; just as there are modes of grief and even despair of which begetting is the consequence. So, too, there are ways of being that command obedience to a calling—and it is intrinsic to the nature of a calling that one does not know in advance what one is called to do. The call may lead to begetting, but also, it may lead away from it.

But more important than all these things is the simple fact that, as the late writer Hilary Mantel once posited in her memoir Giving Up the Ghost , “motives are seldom simple and never pure.” The person who found her belief in the immorality of procreation superseded by the longing to beget; the person who lived through dark times yet loved life; the person who loved life yet refused to beget—what does this prove, except that life is complicated and begetting is also?

If anything, what these examples show is that there are these tangles and complications that we are not seeing—there are ways of grounding hope and meaning to which our minds and hearts are closed.

Perhaps one loves the world while seeing, with open eyes, the shadows clinging to even the most privileged corners of creation. Perhaps one shudders to bring a frail thing into the reaches of such shadows. Perhaps one fears the world but feels a calling that cannot be answered except by an act of creation. Perhaps the calling leads elsewhere.

What I want to resist is the automatic assumption that one path and not another is called “hopeful,” that one path and not another is an expression of commitment and moral fervor—even, of gratitude. What I want to ask is: what would it mean for hope and meaning not to be inflected with optimism or with the strain of “positive thinking” that has cast so powerful a spell on modern culture? What would it mean to envision different grounds for perseverance, for activism even, and for hope itself—for it to be rooted not in positive expectations about the future, but in a commitment to value and justice? What would it mean to recognize creation for what it is, a golden shadowed thing, and form our hopes accordingly?

When I speak of shadows, some may think this goes without saying; surely we all know, have always known, that all of existence is like this?

But in truth they are all too easily disregarded. In an age when entrepreneurs are preparing to make “space babies,” for the sake of proving that procreation is possible outside of earth’s atmosphere—there, in the cold and dark of distant space, with no knowledge whatsoever of the risks in zero gravity to either mother or child—because humanity must be propagated, this forgetfulness can take terrifying forms. Is that then hope? To create, because creating is always the better road? Is that then meaning?

There is more to say about this, and more to think about, for all of us. But we can begin by resisting the temptation of painting the decision to beget along the lines of hope vs despair, which fails to do justice to the richness and complexity of our moral lives. We can begin by recognizing that people asking the question of begetting do so not out of shortsightedness but out of a deep sense that there is something worth asking here, something that is owed. The least we can do is take their question seriously. What does it mean to create a child?

The Comfortable Problem of Mid TV

It’s got a great cast. It looks cinematic. It’s, um … fine. And it’s everywhere.

A few years ago, “Atlanta” and “PEN15” were teaching TV new tricks.

In “Atlanta,” Donald Glover sketched a funhouse-mirror image of Black experience in America (and outside it), telling stories set in and around the hip-hop business with an unsettling, comic-surreal language. In “PEN15,” Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle created a minutely observed, universal-yet-specific picture of adolescent awkwardness.

In February, Glover and Erskine returned in the action thriller “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” on Amazon Prime Video. It’s … fine? A takeoff on the 2005 film , it updates the story of a married duo of spies by imagining the espionage business as gig work. The stars have chemistry and charisma; the series avails itself of an impressive cast of guest stars and delectable Italian shooting locations. It’s breezy and goes down easy. I watched several episodes on a recent long-haul flight and they helped the hours pass.

But I would never have wasted an episode of “Atlanta” or “PEN15” on in-flight entertainment. The work was too good, the nuances too fine, to lose a line of dialogue to engine noise.

I do not mean to single out Glover and Erskine here. They are not alone — far from it. Keri Russell, a ruthless and complicated Russian spy in “The Americans,” is now in “The Diplomat,” a forgettably fun dramedy. Natasha Lyonne, of the provocative “Orange Is the New Black” and the psychotropic “Russian Doll,” now plays a retro-revamped Columbo figure in “Poker Face.” Idris Elba, once the macroeconomics-student gangster Stringer Bell in “The Wire,” more recently starred in “Hijack,” a by-the-numbers airplane thriller.

I’ve watched all of these shows. They’re not bad. They’re simply … mid. Which is what makes them, frustratingly, as emblematic of the current moment in TV as their stars’ previous shows were of the ambitions of the past.

What we have now is a profusion of well-cast, sleekly produced competence. We have tasteful remakes of familiar titles. We have the evidence of healthy budgets spent on impressive locations. We have good-enough new shows that resemble great old ones.

We have entered the golden age of Mid TV.

LET ME SAY UP FRONT: This is not an essay about how bad TV is today. Just the opposite. There is little truly bad high-profile television made anymore. As I wrote last year , these days it takes a special confluence of celebrity pull and network resources to make a dud like HBO’s “The Idol.” When we encounter a majestic prize turkey like this in the wild, we almost don’t know what to think. Who did this? How did this get past quality control?

What we have today instead is something less awful but in a way more sad: The willingness to retreat, to settle, to trade the ambitious for the dependable.

People who grew up in the three-broadcast-network era — we knew from bad TV. We watched it and sometimes even loved it. (ABC’s 1977 comedy “The San Pedro Beach Bums” was one of TV’s biggest punchlines, and its cancellation was one of the first heartbreaks of my young life.) But the rise of cable transformed both the business and the art of television, as the likes of HBO, FX and AMC took risks and offered creators freedom in order to stand out.

It worked — so well, in fact, that eventually the truism that TV was garbage was replaced by the truism that TV was the new literature, or cinema, or maybe even religion. A New York Times critic heralded “The Sopranos” as possibly the greatest work of pop culture in a quarter century. “Deadwood” was likened to Shakespeare, “The Wire” to Dickens, “Mad Men” to Cheever. People deconstructed “Lost” and argued over “Girls.” TV’s auteurs bestrode the cultural conversation like the easy riders and raging bulls of film in the 1970s.

For a good two decades now, it’s been bien-pensant wisdom that TV could be good — no, not just good. Original. Provocative. Important.

TV was so highly acclaimed for so long that we were like the frog in boiling water, but in reverse. The medium became lukewarm so gradually that you might not even have noticed.

The streaming era at first promised more innovation, supercharged and superfunded, and for a while that’s what we got. Eager to establish a catalog of original programming, Netflix underwrote experiments like “Orange Is the New Black,” “BoJack Horseman” and “Sense8.” Not everything worked, and what did work could be inconsistent, but there was a sense of opportunity and possibility.

But another thing happened as well. The conferral of status (and money) on TV meant that there was a lot more talent available. Doing TV was no longer a demotion, and you could buy an instant sense of importance by hiring stars. Netflix’s early hit “House of Cards” was a harbinger, a pot of boiling ham given the aura of prestige with the casting of a pre-scandal Kevin Spacey.

Also, more streamers — Netflix was joined by Amazon, Hulu and sundry Maxes and Pluses — simply meant more TV. More TV was better in some ways: It meant room for new voices and untold stories, more dice to roll. But it also created a sense of overload. In a seemingly infinite sea of story, how would viewers find shows, and shows get found?

More and more often, they’d get found through the algorithm, whose purpose is to serve up new versions of the last thing you watched. Increasingly, the best way to get noticed was with something people already recognized: A familiar title, formula or franchise.

Disney+’s Marvel Cinematic Universe series are too polished to be awful or tacky — just compare them to the threadbare comic-book dramas of the ’70s and ’80s — but they are too bound by the rules and needs of the larger megaproperty to take creative leaps. (It’s noteworthy that the first of these series, “WandaVision,” remains the one significant exception.) Meanwhile, Netflix’s “Ozark” showed that you could ask, “What if ChatGPT rewrote ‘Breaking Bad’?” and enough people would embrace the result as if it were “Breaking Bad.”

Put these two forces together — a rising level of talent and production competence on the one hand, the pressure to deliver versions of something viewers already like on the other hand — and what do you get? You get a whole lot of Mid.

MID IS NOT the mediocre TV of the past. It’s more upscale. It is the aesthetic equivalent of an Airbnb “modern farmhouse” renovation, or the identical hipster cafe found in medium-sized cities all over the planet. It’s nice! The furniture is tasteful, they’re playing Khruangbin on the speakers, the shade-grown coffee is an improvement on the steaming mug of motor oil you’d have settled for a few decades ago.

If comparing TV to fast-casual dining is an insulting analogy, in my defense I only borrowed it. A New Yorker profile last year quoted a Netflix executive describing the platform’s ideal show as a “gourmet cheeseburger.”

I’m not going to lie, I enjoy a gourmet cheeseburger. Caramelize some onions, lay on a slice of artisanal American cheese and I’m happy. But at heart, the sales pitch for that cheeseburger is no different from that for a Big Mac: You know what you’re going to get.

And it’s not only Netflix plating this up. Look at the star-packed algorithm bait we’ve seen over the past year or so. There’s “Masters of the Air,” a well-credentialed, superfluous expansion to the World War II-verse of “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” (Liked those? Watch this next!) “Apples Never Fall,” a room-temperature adaptation of another Liane Moriarty novel. (Liked “Big Little Lies”? Watch this next!) “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” a fall-from-grace biopic cast to the hilt and padded to the limit. (Liked “Fosse/Verdon”? Watch this next!).

These shows don’t have what it takes to be truly bad. Making honestly bad TV requires a mercenary, Barnumesque disregard for taste, or a hellbent willingness to take the kind of gamble that can turn into disaster.

Mid TV, on the other hand, almost can’t be bad for some of the same reasons that keep it from being great. It’s often an echo of the last generation of breakthrough TV (so the highs and lows of “Game of Thrones” are succeeded by the faithful adequacy of “House of the Dragon” ). Or it’s made by professionals who know how to make TV too well, and therefore miss a prerequisite of making great art, which is training yourself to forget how the thing was ever done and thus coming up with your own way of doing it.

Mid is not a strict genre with a universal definition. But it’s what you get when you raise TV’s production values and lower its ambitions. It reminds you a little of something you once liked a lot. It substitutes great casting for great ideas. (You really liked the star in that other thing! You can’t believe they got Meryl Streep !)

Mid is based on a well-known book or movie or murder. Mid looks great on a big screen. (Though for some reason everything looks blue .) Mid was shot on location in multiple countries. Mid probably could have been a couple episodes shorter. Mid is fine, though. It’s good enough.

Above all, Mid is easy. It’s not dumb easy — it shows evidence that its writers have read books. But the story beats are familiar. Plot points and themes are repeated. You don’t have to immerse yourself single-mindedly the way you might have with, say, “The Wire.” It is prestige TV that you can fold laundry to.

And let’s be fair, it makes plenty of people happy. Any honest critic has to recognize that people for whom TV-watching is not work do not always want to work at watching TV. (See, for instance, the unlikely resurgence on Netflix of “Suits,” that watchable avatar of 2010s basic-cable Mid.) I get it. TV critics have laundry to fold, too.

There may also be economic reasons to prefer good-enough TV. As more people drop cable TV for streaming, their incentives change. With cable you bought a package of channels, many of which you would never watch, but any of which you might .

Each streaming platform, on the other hand, requires a separate purchase decision , and they add up. You might well choose a service that has plenty of shows you’d be willing to watch rather than one with a single show that you must watch.

So where HBO used to boast that it was “not TV,” modern streamers send the message, “We’ll give you a whole lot of TV.” It can seem like their chief goal is less to produce standout shows than to produce a lot of good-looking thumbnails.

There even is a growing idea that a new Golden Age is emerging, with a new Midas. Apple TV+, the home of “Ted Lasso” and “The Morning Show,” has been deemed, by more than one commentator, “the new HBO.”

Apple TV+ is not HBO. At least not in the sense of what made HBO HBO in the 2000s, when it was revolutionizing TV and challenging viewers. (And HBO wasn’t alone in being “HBO” in this sense: It had company in FX, AMC, Showtime and occasionally Syfy and others.)

But Apple TV+ just might be the HBO of Mid.

Broadly generalizing, Apple’s strategy has been to open its checkbook and sign up A-list names — Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, M. Night Shyamalan — to make broadly palatable, uncontroversial shows. (This did not work out too well with Jon Stewart .) According to reports around its founding, the Apple chief Tim Cook was concerned that the service not go overboard with violence, profanity and nudity — not exactly the mission statement of somebody looking to reopen the Bada Bing.

Apple’s investment bought something. Its shows feel professional. They look like premium products that no one skimped on. “Palm Royale” has a loaded cast (Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Carol Burnett[!]) and an attention to period detail that recalls “Mad Men.” But its class farce is toothless, its atmosphere of ’60s cultural ferment warmed over. Comedies like “Shrinking” and “Platonic” and “Loot” are more nice than funny, dramas like “Constellation,” “The New Look” and “Manhunt” classy but inert.

These are shows built like iPhones — sleek, rounded, with no edges you can cut yourself on.

THERE IS, OF COURSE, great and innovative TV on Apple as well. I’m dying to see another season of the brain-bending sci-fi thriller “Severance,” and its first crop of shows included the alternative space-race history “For All Mankind” and the screwball literary history “Dickinson.”

It is exceptions like these series that make me an optimist about TV long-term. Even in the face of pressures and incentives to aim for the middle, creativity wants to find a way. Just a year ago, I was writing about wild, adventurous series like “Beef,” “Reservation Dogs,” “Mrs. Davis” and “I’m a Virgo.” (This year, two of the best new dramas so far are a remake of “Shogun” and a re-adaptation of “The Talented Mr. Ripley.”)

But the bulk of TV right now — the packing peanuts that fill up the space between “The Bear” and “FBoy Island” — feels flattened out in the broad middle. No, not flattened: Smoothed. That may be the biggest but most intangible defining feature of Mid. It’s friction-free. It has an A.I.-like, uncanny luster, like the too-sharp motion-smoothing effect that you have to turn off when you buy a new flat-screen.

TV is far from broken, but it does feel like someone needs to go in and tweak the settings. The price of reliability, competence and algorithm-friendliness is losing the sense of surprise — the unmoored feeling you get, from innovations like “Fleabag” and “Watchmen” and “I May Destroy You,” of being thrown into an unpredictable alien universe.

I don’t think it’s only critics and TV snobs who want this, either. “The Sopranos” and “Twin Peaks” were revolutionary and rewarded close viewing, but they were also popular. Even if you watch TV as escapism, how much of an escape is a show that you can, and probably will, half-watch while also doomscrolling on your phone?

We lose something when we become willing to settle. Reliability is a fine quality in a hybrid sedan. But in art, it has a cost. A show that can’t disappoint you can’t surprise you. A show that can’t enrage you can’t engage you.

The good news is, there is still TV willing to take chances, if you look for it. You may have loved or hated “The Curse,” but I would be surprised if anyone who watched an hour of it ended up indifferent to it. This month, HBO premiered “The Sympathizer,” Park Chan-wook’s frenetic adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s satire of the Vietnam War and its aftermath, a raucous, disorienting rush down the back alleys of memory.

With risk, of course, comes the possibility of disappointment — you might get another “The Idol.” I’m willing to accept the trade-off. The price of making TV that’s failure-proof, after all, is getting TV that can never really succeed. Come back, bad TV: All is forgiven.
