Once you upload your resume, you will no longer have any control over who downloads it and gets access to your private information, like your email address, phone number, maybe even your physical address. One more thing you should consider before you add your resume to LinkedIn is what it will look like to your current employer if you have one. Before, you used to be able to add your resume to the summary section of your LinkedIn profile. Now the layout has changed, and you have to add your resume to the Featured section to have it displayed on your profile.

  • On your profile, either scroll down to the Featured section or tap the Add profile section button.

  • From the pop-up menu, choose Media .

  • Find your latest resume on your computer, and select Open . Make sure your document has a clear name like your name + resume .

LinkedIn offers a second (and less obvious) option for adding your resume to your profile. You can save up to three different resumes when applying for jobs on LinkedIn using the Easy Apply function.

  • From LinkedIn’s navigation bar, select Jobs .

  • From the positions offered, find one that has the Easy Apply icon on it. Those are the jobs that you can quickly apply to using a saved resume on LinkedIn.

  • When prompted, click Upload Resume and attach your latest resume to the application. If you’re using different resumes for different positions, make sure to use distinctive names for each of your saved resumes.

Now, when it comes to uploading your resume on LinkedIn, the process is fairly easy. 

Follow these steps to upload your resume directly to your profile:

Step #1: Click the Me tab on the top toolbar below your profile photo.

Step #2: Choose View Profile from the drop-down menu that appears.

Step #3: Scroll down and click the Add Featured link.

Step #4: If you don't see the “ Featured” section , it might be disabled. If that’s the case, scroll to the top of your profile and select “ Add profile section” , then “ Recommended” , and then “ Add featured”, and finally "Add Media" .

Step #5: Otherwise, if your Featured section is enabled, click Add Favorites or the plus icon , and select Media from the drop-down menu.

Step #6: In the file upload window that appears, select the resume document you want to upload and click Open.

Step #7: A preview of the document will pop up, as well as fields to title and describe your resume. Only the title is required.

Step #8: After filling in the title and description, click Save .

And just like that, everyone will be able to view your resume in the Featured part of your LinkedIn profile .

Applying for Jobs on LinkedIn? Add Your Resume Using Easy Apply!

Now, when looking for work, it’s best to tailor your resume to each position rather than use the same one for all applications. Customizing your resume to the job not only improves your chances of getting hired but also shows the recruiter that you're dedicated and detail-oriented.

And, unfortunately, simply adding your resume to your LinkedIn profile doesn’t allow you to tailor your resume to specific job positions. 

The good news? LinkedIn has thought about this. 

If you’re job hunting and applying to several positions, you can upload different, customized versions of your resume using LinkdeIn's “ Easy Apply ” function. 

Here’s exactly how you can do it: 

Step #1: For starters, check the job position you’re applying for. The Easy Apply function will allow you to upload your resume straight to LinkedIn. Any listing that just has an "Apply" tab will require you to submit your resume via a third-party website.

Step #2: If applicable, select Easy Apply . Scroll down until you see a button that says Upload Resume .

All LinkedIn profiles feature a “Save as PDF” tab that will take your LinkedIn profile and save it on your device as a PDF.  

This PDF will contain everything you’ve listed on LinkedIn, including your education, work experience, and skills.

To download your LinkedIn profile as a resume, the first thing you need to do is open LinkedIn in a web browser on your computer.

Now, if you want to add, update, or omit certain elements from the profile before saving it, you can use LinkedIn’s resume tool to do so. Once you’re pleased with the result, you can hit Save. 

However, the real question here is , is using a LinkedIn profile as a resume a good idea?

The answer is no .

The LinkedIn resume is simply not that effective for several reasons:

  • It simply doesn’t look that good. And yes, your resume’s design does matter. The cleaner your resume layout, the easier it is to scan, and as such, more likely to get read by the HR manager.
  • It’s not comprehensive enough. Your LinkedIn profile should not be as detailed as your resume. The purpose of a LI profile is to act as a brief introduction to you as a professional, not to sell you as a candidate.
  • The output might be too long. Generally, you want to keep your resume length to one, maybe two pages max. A LinkedIn profile export can be longer than that.

Your profile is out-of-date and incomplete. Again, it's imperative that your LinkedIn profile is current and complete if you're in the job market and share your URL on your resume.

You don't feel good about your profile. Even if your LinkedIn profile is current, if you don't feel good about it or don't feel it represents you in the best light possible, don't include the URL on your resume. Instead, wait until you've made the updates and changes that make you want to share it. The PDF version of your resume can be converted to a Google Doc or a Microsoft Word Document for editing.

Keep in mind that you'll most likely need to edit the formatting to turn it into a traditional resume. There are several options for converting it, including using  Adobe PDF to Word Converter , uploading the PDF file and then  opening it as a Google Doc , or  editing it in Microsoft Word .

  • Include a catchy and concise headline.  Even if you don’t have a  resume headline , include a headline on your LinkedIn profile. You want to make it concise and catchy. For example, instead of “Teacher with 10 Years of Experience,” try “High-Tech, Award-Winning Physics Teacher.” If you don’t currently have a job, here are tips on  how to write a headline when you are unemployed .
  • Write an engaging summary . The summary section on LinkedIn is a great place to highlight, in a few sentences or bullet points, what makes you stand out as an employee or job candidate. This should read like a summary statement on a resume .
  • Use appropriate language.  A resume is usually quite formal. You can be a bit more casual on your LinkedIn. For example, many people write their profiles in the first person (“I have ten years of experience in healthcare marketing”). It’s okay to be a bit more casual or personal in your LinkedIn profile – in fact, it can help engage a recruiter.
  • Include keywords and skills. Unlike a resume, you are not tailoring your LinkedIn profile to fit a specific job listing. However, you can still use  keywords  from your industry in your profile. This will make it easier for employers to find your profile when searching for potential job candidates.
  • Include values.  Like a resume,  include numbers  to demonstrate how you have added value at work. For example, you might state how much money you saved a company through your cost-saving solutions, or explain how you completed a task within a certain period of time.
  • Add content and accomplishments . You can upload documents or include links on your LinkedIn profile. Take advantage of this – include papers, presentations, projects, personal websites, and other materials that demonstrate the quality of your work. This is a great way to show, rather than tell, employers about your strengths.
  • Get recommendations and endorsements. To a potential employer, a  LinkedIn recommendation  is a reference in advance. Try to boost your profile with LinkedIn recommendations from your connections. Also be sure to  endorse people in your network , and hopefully they will endorse you back.
  • Create a custom URL and share your profile.  You want people to see your profile, so be sure to make it as visible as possible. Make sure your profile is public (check your LinkedIn settings to make sure you are visible to people outside of your network). Also consider  customizing your URL  so that you have a link that's easy to share. Mine, for example, is  https://www.linkedin.com/in/alisondoyle . You can include this URL in your email signature so that people can easily access your profile.
  • Grow Your network. Another way to share your profile is to connect with other members and build your network. The more connections you have, the more opportunities you have. Of course, you should only connect with people you know. If you don’t know someone but would like to connect, be sure to send a private message introducing yourself.
  • Update your profile regularly . Don't forget to update your profile when you change positions or companies. Also add links to new articles, projects, etc., as you complete them. Your profile should be dynamic and up-to-date. Spend a little time every month, even if you don't have major changes reviewing it and freshening it up .

If you already have your work experience listed on your LinkedIn profile, it's easy to get the site to automatically generate a resume for you. Here's how to do it.

All LinkedIn profiles include a button to download the profile as a PDF . This PDF is basically your resume, containing all the experiences you've listed on LinkedIn. This includes your academics, work experiences, and everything else that you have on your profile.

To download this quick resume, first, open LinkedIn in a web browser on your computer. When LinkedIn opens, click your profile icon at the top of the site and select "View Profile."

On the profile page, right beneath your profile picture, click the "More" option, and select "Save to PDF."

In a few moments, your browser will start downloading your resume PDF from LinkedIn.

That's all there is to generating a quick automatic resume from LinkedIn, but you might not want to send it exactly as it is to potential employers. In that case, check out the section below.

The resume that you downloaded above includes all the information that you have on your LinkedIn profile. If you want to add, edit, or delete certain sections of the resume, use LinkedIn's resume creation tool. It lets you choose what sections you want to include in or exclude from your resume. When you're happy with the result, you can download it as a PDF to your computer.

To start building your custom resume, open LinkedIn in your web browser. On LinkedIn, click your profile icon at the top-right corner and select "View Profile."

On the profile page, in the section at the top, select "More," and then click "Build a resume." This launches LinkedIn's resume creation tool in your browser.

In the "Select a Resume" pop-up that appears, click the "Create From Profile" button at the bottom.

In the following box that says "Choose your desired job title," click the "Job Title" box, and then enter your current job title. Then, select a title from the suggested options and click "Apply" at the bottom.

You're now on LinkedIn's resume creation tool screen. Here, you can add and exclude whatever information you want in your resume. To add or remove a section in your resume, click the pencil icon next to a section on the page.

The site will open a box with your selected section in it. Here, you can modify the contents of your section and click "Save" at the bottom of the box to save your changes. Or, you can click "Delete" to remove this section from your resume altogether.

When you've finished editing your resume, click "Preview" at the top of the LinkedIn site to preview your resume.

If you're happy with the result, click "More" at the top of the LinkedIn site, and then select "Download as PDF." This will download your resume as a PDF to your computer.

You're all set.

In addition to the ability to download your own resume, you can also download other LinkedIn members' resumes. You don't need to be connected with a member to be able to download their resume, but there's a limit of 200 downloads for others' resumes. (You can download your own resume an unlimited number of times, though.)

To download someone's profile, first, open their profile on LinkedIn . On the profile page, right beneath the cover image (the large image at the top of the page), click the "More" option, and then select "Save to PDF."

Your browser will start downloading a PDF resume of your selected LinkedIn member.

On top of that, some LinkedIn users are wary of putting confidential data about their employers online, because revenue, client names, or losses, or stories about problems at the company should be disclosed with care.

This means you must spend the time to gather the right achievements for a powerful personal brand message on your resume… and adjust confidential details as needed for public reading on LinkedIn.

Your LinkedIn-generated Resume will use fairly attractive formatting… but in the end, your resume will look just like everyone else’s document.

But if you haven’t fully populated your LinkedIn Profile, you’re in for a big challenge.  Even if you HAVE updated LinkedIn, you may not be able to feature top achievements (due to corporate confidentiality).

So you’ll still need to put in the work and document your biggest successes, personal brand, quantifiable career wins, and promise of value… whether you choose to work with a skilled resume writer or dedicate hours to writing a resume for yourself.

5 AI tools that can help you land that perfect job

W hether you're looking to make a move or not currently working, the exhaustion of searching for a new job is real. But, with the help of AI tools , not every part of the process has to feel repetitive or be filled with uncertainty.

"There are a lot of specialized AI tools out there, specifically for job seekers, in terms of writing application materials, practicing for interviews, things like that," Keith Spencer, a career expert at online job site FlexJobs, told Mashable.

AI can help with a lot. Some products can determine which positions you're best suited for, while others can tailor your resume and cover letter based on a job posting. Not only does this streamline the entire process, it can also give you the best chance at landing an interview and making it through an  Applicant Tracking System (ATS)  — a program many recruiters use to identify top applicants for a position before scheduling an interview.

Rohan Rajiv, LinkedIn's Director of Product Management overseeing its job seeker products, told Mashable that the company hears from job seekers that they have three main problems:

  • When they take the time to apply for a job, they want to know that somebody noticed.
  • They want to find the positions most relevant to them quickly.
  • They want tactical and emotional support throughout the job-seeking process.

AI can make each of these steps a little easier. Although Spencer added a note of caution, "AI is not perfect. It's constantly being developed, updated, and trained on new information." He advises job seekers to use AI as an idea generator or stepping-off point to enhance their own work, not do all the work for them .

Play to your strengths, save some time, and give yourself the best chance at landing an interview — and prepping for one — by utilizing these five AI tools as part of your job search.

Out of the three options,  ChatGPT  is the most comprehensive. It can work as your career assistant, offering personalized support during the various stages of your job search.

Whether you're struggling to identify your unique skills or jobs you're suited for, tailor your resume for a specific role to make it through an ATS, or draft a captivating cover letter, ChatGPT can help — it's all about the prompts you use and the information you give it.

To start, I recommend paying $20 a month for a subscription to ChatGPT, at least while you're actively job-seeking, so you can access its GPT 4 model and plugins — although this is by no means necessary. While GPT 3.5 (the model available with the free version) can still answer your prompts, its answers will be less nuanced than those of GPT 4, which is better at complex problem-solving and understanding context.

GPT plugins (GPTs)  are another matter, however. They can be extremely useful in enhancing ChatGPT's capabilities during the job search process, with plugins for everything from searching for jobs near you to preparing you for an interview based on the job description. You will need to be a ChatGPT subscriber to use plugins — and you can have multiple plugins installed , but only three can be enabled at once. Make sure you research any third-party plugins before you install them, as there is  the potential for security issues .

Also note that unless you  opt out of having your data used , ChatGPT's owner, OpenAI, can use anything you input and the responses the AI generates  to train its models .

Now, let's get to how you can use ChatGPT to help with your job search.

Identifying your skills and finding ideal positions

To start, you'll need to give ChatGPT your resume — preferably a master one that includes all your positions and associated tasks.

"It's important to avoid sharing personal or sensitive information," said Spencer. "I recommend that you don't include your name and contact information or anything like that. You could even go a step further and make your job titles and the companies you work at a bit more generic or redacted. You don't have to give it any information you don't want to, just to ensure you're keeping yourself safe."

Once you've input your resume, you can ask ChatGPT questions to identify your key skills, your most transferable skills, and where you may lack some experience. It can also tell you which jobs you're best suited for based on the skills you already have — and if you have GPTs such as Ambition and Resume Copilot installed, the answers will likely be even more nuanced.

Here are some examples of prompts you can use:

Prompt 1:  Based on my resume, what careers would I be most suited to?

Prompt 2:  Please analyze my resume and point out if there are any red flags or potential detractors that an ATS could pick up on and why.

Prompt 3:  What skills or other things could I work on personally and professionally to strengthen my resume and competitiveness?

Prompt 4:  If I wanted to switch careers to [insert job field here], what are my transferable skills, and what skills would I need to gain to be a competitive applicant?

Tailoring your resume

Now that ChatGPT has your resume, it can recommend adjustments to ensure it aligns well with a specific role's requirements. Paste in the text from the job description to understand which keywords and phrases are probably important to the recruiter.

Here are some example prompts:

Prompt 1:  Based on this job description, create a list of skills the recruiter is looking for. You can include tiers based on importance if necessary.

Prompt 2:  Please highlight the keywords in this job posting and point out where my resume lists or does not list those skills.

Prompt 3:  Please analyze my resume and suggest improvements to make the accomplishments stand out more prominently and give me the best chance at an interview.

Prompt 4:  Are there any skills I'm not highlighting enough on my resume, and are there skills that are missing that I should include?

Drafting your cover letter

A well-crafted cover letter can make a big difference in catching a recruiter's eye. ChatGPT can generate a cover letter draft personalized to the job and your experience. This initial draft provides a great starting point, which you should refine to ensure accuracy and add a more personal touch.

If you're wondering whether you even need to include a cover letter, here's what Spencer said: "A lot of organizations say they don't read a cover letter, but even some of those organizations still like to see that you've submitted one. Others will read it, and it's really important to them.

"My viewpoint on it is, because it has the possibility of helping you achieve success, I always recommend submitting a tailored cover letter. It might be more time-consuming, but it's that quality-over-quantity approach. If I really care about a job and would really want to work there, I'm going to invest the time to write a solid cover letter."

Here are some prompts you can use to draft an initial version of your cover letter:

Prompt 1:  Using my resume as a guide, please write a cover letter for the [insert job title] position at [insert company name].

Prompt 2:  Could you create a cover letter that emphasizes my experience in [specific field or skill] for the job role of [insert job title]?

Prompt 3:  Please draft a cover letter that aligns with the key requirements mentioned in this job description. [paste job description]

Prompt 4:  Write a cover letter highlighting my transferable skills for a career switch to [insert job title].

Preparing for a job interview

Preparing for a job interview can be nerve-wracking, but ChatGPT and plugins like Job Interview can give you a feel for the questions you might be asked . You can also receive guidance on how to respond effectively. 

Here are some prompts to help you prepare for an interview:

Prompt 1:  What are common interview questions for a [insert job title] position, and how should I answer them?

Prompt 2:  Can you provide a mock interview for the below role of [insert job title] with feedback on my responses? [paste job description]

Prompt 3:  Based on the job description, what specific skills or experiences should I highlight during my interview for [insert job title]?

Prompt 4:  How can I best answer questions about [specific skill or experience] in my upcoming interview for [insert job title]?

You probably already use  LinkedIn , seeing as the employment-focused social media platform has over a billion members. But did you know it has been using AI for years to show you people you may know and the most relevant jobs based on your experience? As of the start of November, LinkedIn is taking its AI integration one step further, using its years of job seeker and employment data (it was founded in 2003) to inform  its new generative AI and chatbot features .

Optimizing your LinkedIn profile

"The best way to utilize or harness AI is to have as much relevant data as possible," said Rajiv. "So that starts with having an updated profile, having the right skills stack to it, and making sure that the content on your profile reflects what you want recruiters to see."

Then, if you have LinkedIn Premium, you can utilize the platform's new  AI tools to optimize your profile's Headline and About section .

Getting tailored insights and suggestions

If your profile is up-to-date, LinkedIn uses that information to give you "a more relevant and personalized experience," Rajiv said. "Generative AI has kind of changed the game on our ability to support a job seeker."

Before generative AI, job seekers looking for a more tailored experience usually had to spend money to go to career coaches, said Rajiv. Now, LinkedIn Premium can give you up-to-date insights about a company, tell you how you stack up against other applicants for a particular job posting, and show you where you can improve your profile to be more competitive.

Personalized connection and message recommendations

If you want to take your application to a job one step further and reach out to people who work in the company, LinkedIn Premium can recommend people you can contact and even help you  craft cold messages or follow-ups to a hiring manager .

"We typically have a deeper understanding of people because of the fact that they have a profile, they've applied to jobs on our website, etc," Rajiv said. "And with this technology, now we're able to bring all of this together to support people in a way that was science fiction just 12 months ago."

Google Bard

Like ChatGPT, Google Bard can help you with your resume, cover letter, and interview prep. But, because it also has access to real-time information on the internet and Google's sophisticated AI algorithms, it can be more accurate for job discovery. Also, as a bonus, it's free.

"Google Bard can provide you some real-time, up-to-date information," Spencer said. "I usually recommend a job seeker use both ChatGPT and Google Bard kind of in tandem, and then you can compare the results that you get or sort of mix and match the results."

Job discovery and matching

Google Bard can analyze your skills and experience to suggest job opportunities that align with your resume. This is especially useful for finding roles you might not have considered but are well-suited for.

Customizing your resume and cover letter

Similar to ChatGPT, Google Bard can provide recommendations to tailor your resume and cover letter for specific job listings. It can also leverage Google's extensive data to offer up-to-date insights into the latest industry trends and employer preferences.

Preparing for an interview

Google Bard can help you prepare for interviews by providing industry-specific questions, insights into company culture, and tips on articulating your experience and skills effectively.

Market trends and insights

You can use Google Bard to stay informed about the latest trends in your industry, ensuring that you stay ahead in your job search. This includes updates on in-demand skills, emerging job roles, and tips on career development.

Russia has Ukraine outgunned 10 to 1 on artillery, and 30 to 1 on its airforce, Zelenskyy says

  • Russia is firing 10 times more artillery than Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
  • Russia also has 30 times more aircraft, he said, in a worrying sign for the country.
  • Ukraine is suffering critical shortages with US aid stalled, and has warned it may need to retreat.

Ukraine's president said that Russia is now firing 10 times more artillery shells than his country is able to, and has 30 times more aircraft, in a worrying sign for Ukraine's ability to sustain its military efforts.

"You need to be much stronger than your enemy. Today, our artillery shell ratio is 1-10. Can we hold our ground? No," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told PBS this week. "With these statistics, they will be pushing us back every day," he added.

Zelenskyy also said that Russian aircraft outnumber Ukraine's by 30:1. "How can you wage a war against Russia like this?"

He added that unless aid from the US resumes, "we will have no chance of winning."

The US is the single biggest donor to Ukraine, but billions in further aid to Ukraine is stalled in Congress. Republicans have pushed back against giving more, even though much of the money would go back into the US economy , via US defense manufacturers.

Zelenskyy made it clear that it was ammo that his country needed the most.

"We're not asking for missiles for 2,000 or 3,000 kilometers, nothing like that," he said. "And nobody is asking for 500 aircraft or 300, like Russia."

"Ukraine has already defied the odds and beat the expectations within the first couple of months of the invasion. They've shown what they're capable of with limited resources," Jonathan Poquette said.

"How much more do they need to prove? Don't tie one of their hands behind their back. Support Ukraine, help us win this war," he added.

Ukraine is producing more of its own ammunition and weaponry, to make it less reliant on its allies, but Russia is also doing the same, and has a much larger population and more resources available.

Zelenskyy warned in March that Ukraine would have to start retreating if no new aid came from Congress.

"We are trying to find some way not to retreat," he said at the time.

The White House has been critical of Republicans blocking further aid, and has already attributed one major Russian victory to Ukrainian shortages.

Ukraine withdrew from the eastern town of Avdiivka in February after months of grueling fighting. The White House said Kyiv's troops were forced to withdraw due to a shortage of ammunition and supplies — which is said was a direct result of "congressional inaction."
