Who We Are

Writopia Lab is a national community of teen and young writers and thinkers.

Why We Do This

Why We Do This

Because we love authentic writing, thoughtful conversations, stunning prose, and silly madness.

Our Mission

What We Do

In addition to running workshops at our labs, we work with community-based organizations, the NY Public Library, Homes for the Homeless, and public and private schools across the country.

Testimonials

"Writopia was Abey's first inclusion experience. He was embraced by the community and encouraged to submit his writing for publications and awards. Abey was very happy at Writopia and it gave us the confidence to transition from a private special education school to a NYC public high school. His highest compliment is 'This is just like Writopia.'" Michelle Noris
"Writopia online has been a miracle during the pandemic. The workshops have always been the bright spot in Hugh's week and even more so during this past year. Thank you for continuing to provide a top notch creative outlet!" Jessica Manser
Thursday is Willem’s favorite day of the week! He and several others from their D & D game just chatted with each other on roll20 the other day— love the way this group has bonded. I’m amazed and grateful to know that making friends virtually during a pandemic is totally a thing. Jennifer Robinson
"My daughter loves her class. This is huge - for years, I've been digging for her passion, her fire, and I think we just rubbed two sticks together and got some." A Proud Dad
"I just glanced at Shaylem's essay and was really happy with what you all have helped facilitate for him. I really appreciate the feedback, all of your hard work, and the organization as a whole." Liz Lawler
"Thank you all. One thing I have learned from Covid is what people and activities are really the most meaningful for my child and Writopia is top of the list. Thank you all for creating such an amazing supportive community!!!" L.P.
"I never thought I would say this, but i am soooooo happy that your classes are on Zoom so Robbie can continue to take your classes when we move!!! Thank you so much...I cannot express enough how wonderful Writopia has been for my son..." Shari
"...thanks so much for granting Amira with her first sleepaway camp experience last summer at WriCampia. Amira had an amazing time and wants to attend again this summer... She still talks about her experience at WriCampia to date and keeps in touch with the friends she met. I myself really enjoyed viewing all of the photos, her short story video and fun memories captured! Thanks so much again!" Tanisha, Writopia Parent (Winter 2019)
I absolutely recommend this class. Discussions and readings changed my thinking about how to teach writing... The classes were fun especially the writing games and exercises. I felt like a kid again. NYC DOE educator's evaluation of Writopia Lab's Training Institute
Writopia was really beneficial for students who already see themselves as writers, as it gives them the creative outlet. But it is also great for reluctant writers; they flourish in this type of environment. Teacher, PS 276 in New York City

Karen Villeda A course by Karen Villeda

Despite having grown up surrounded by books, Mexican writer Karen Villeda had a lot of difficulty learning to read. Her mother patiently taught her and, before long, she was reading pirate stories by herself, and at just 19, she published her first book. Karen believes that literary genres are interchangeable and can be combined, which is why she considers her writing to be a hybrid.

She has had more than ten books published, and her book Dodo (Fondo Editorial Tierra Adentro) won the Premio Nacional de Poesía Joven Elías Nandino in 2013 and is part of the Archivo de Literatura Hispánica en Audio. Karen's work has earned her more than fifteen prizes and she has also been writer-in-residence in the University of Iowa. She is currently an editor and gives classes in creative writing.

creative writing lab

Date:   First week of October 2022

Format:   Virtual

Time:   Evening

Class Size:   6-8   Grade Level: 9th-12th Grade

FALL 2022 APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!

Creative writing is one of our most important forms of expression, whether we’re working on a narrative essay, a novel, or a poem that has the power to change the world. (Looking at you, Amanda Gorman!) The Front Street Writers Creative Writing Lab is for aspiring writers who want to dedicate themselves to their craft, learn new skills, and connect with upcoming and established authors.

About the Program

This virtual semester-long program is open to 9th-12th grade students, with one “cohort” meeting in the fall semester and another in the spring semester. Students will dive into three core forms of writing—poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction—as they work toward completing writing projects throughout the semester. The students will also practice peer review techniques in addition to getting feedback on their work from their instructor. At the conclusion of the semester, one piece from each student will be selected for the  National Writers Series Literary Journal .

National Writers Series will provide monthly In-person enrichment opportunities for interested students who want to connect in person either socially or for an added workshop topic of their choosing.

Goals and Expectations

  • Writing work : Students will complete writing prompts and projects throughout the semester as they work toward their final project. Those who select a fiction concentration will complete a short story; those who select a creative nonfiction concentration will complete two essays, articles, or stories; and those who select a poetry concentration will complete a chapbook of 10+ poems.
  • Reading assignments:  Each month, a book or series of articles on the craft of writing will be assigned to read and discuss at the monthly cohort meeting. Depending on the makeup of the cohort concentrations, the content will be in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry craft.
  • Peer workshops:  Each student will present their work once per semester during a monthly cohort meeting, and all students are expected to provide feedback on the presenter’s work. The introductory meeting will address constructive criticism and best practices for reviewing other writers’ work.
  • Masterclasses:  National Writers Series brings authors to the virtual classroom in coordination with author events at the City Opera House . Students are encouraged to attend 1-2 masterclasses per semester.

The cohort will meet monthly on evenings and weekends as a group, as well as on a biweekly basis with instructor Kevin Fitton and a peer critique partner from the cohort. Classes begin in October and end in December. The class and meeting dates will be determined by the group to accommodate schedules. We are delighted to offer the Creative Writing Lab for free, but we ask accepted students to commit to attending all scheduled meetings, barring a pre-excused absence or emergency. As we are only able to accept a limited number of students into this high-level program, we want to make sure there is a mutual commitment among the cohort.

Applications

The Creative Writing Lab is open to students throughout northern Michigan. The application for entry can be found below.   Applications are due by October 8th and will be reviewed by Front Street Writers instructors, staff, and volunteers, and selected candidates will be notified once decisions are made. A wait list will be available, and students can always reapply for the spring 2022 semester. If you have any questions about the application, please contact us.

In keeping with the University of Texas at Arlington mission to advance knowledge and pursue excellence, the Writing Center partners with academic writers at all levels to explore and develop their ideas, to become aware of the needs of their readers, and to learn the rhetorical and syntactical strategies necessary for effective written communication across disciplines and across communities. We collaborate with faculty to ensure that we remain current on the techniques, skills, and strategies students learn in the classroom in order to facilitate assignment comprehension, expectations, and objectives. As critical thinking, reading, and writing skills are important for all majors and all disciplines, the Writing Center engages and participates in the most cutting edge composition and writing scholarship, including assessment and shifting demands from a variety of writing cultures in higher education. We draw on our expertise to become a trusted and reliable campus resource for the diverse community we serve and to partner with faculty, administrators, and other UT-Arlington community members through classroom instructional support.

The Writing Center offers a welcoming and supportive environment for students and faculty who seek assistance on a wide variety of academic and scholarly writing assignments and needs. We encourage and motivate academic writers of all levels. We strive to provide the highest quality assistance to academic writers as they work to achieve their goals and fulfill their potentials both in and outside of the classroom. Our first objective is to support academic writers on the project in hand, but always with the goal of elevating the general quality of both their writing process and their written communication skills. Clear and concise writing often follows clear and concise thinking, and we are here to help academic writers develop logical, clear, and concise patterns of thinking. We strategize with writers to development better writing practices that promote the intellectual growth and communication skills of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty writers.

Core Functions: We accomplish our mission through free one-on-one tutoring sessions, specialized in-class and general center workshops, all with highly trained, competent writing consultants.

Specifically, we:

  • Assist scholarly writing across the spectrum of writing talents and needs
  • Help clients develop their ability to critically evaluate their own writing and ideas
  • Offer scholarly writers focused, extended, and personalized tutoring (in 15-, 30-, 45-, or 60-minute sessions) in an effort to increase their chances of becoming successful—defined by completion, improved grades, or publications
  • Collaborate with faculty on discipline-specific classroom workshops for undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Offer discipline-specific writing workshop series on core writing assignments
  • Provide writing support to faculty for publications
  • Assist academic programs, units, and student learning groups in integrating university resources to improve academic and scholarly writing
  • Facilitate graduate writing cohorts
  • Address grammar, punctuation, style, and citation concerns during 20-minute Quick Hits appointments designed to help writers learn specific grammatical and syntactical rules, and to identify and reduce errors

We will point out grammar and sentence-level issues and show you how to revise them on your own, and we’ll also point you to additional writing resources.
  • When scheduling either a face-to-face or online appointment, please provide us with as much information as you can about your writing assignment and your concerns. · Be sure to download the attached file: Instructions for Starting Your Online Appointment. This document will walk you through accessing your appointment.
  • To begin an online session, log back into the scheduler at uta.mywconline.com approximately 5-10 minutes before the start of appointment (CST), open the appointment, and click “Start or Join Online Consultation.” From there follow the instructions for uploading your paper and using the chat features.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Working through a writing assignment draft in an online session tends to take more time than in a face-to-face session. Unless you have only one or two questions, it is unlikely that we will get through an entire essay in a single online session. However, for the given length of your appointment, the writing consultant will work with you at the beginning of the session to establish an agenda that will help address your writing concerns along with the demands/requirements of the writing assignment. We encourage you to make additional appointments with your consultant to continue where you left off in the session.
  • Also, please remember that you can revisit any online sessions you've had at any time by returning to WC Online and logging back into your appointment. The text of your session will be there for you to reference during your revision process.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments soon after your session ends! The closer we get to the end of the semester, the sessions will get more difficult to schedule due to student demand.

What is the Writing Lab?

The Writing Lab exists to help students improve their mastery of the skills of composition — invention, organization, and style. Focusing primarily on the student’s development, we neither edit nor proof-read papers; instead, we help students discern areas for improvement in their writing and guide them as they work on those areas. All the tutors in the Lab are graduate students at UD. We work with students on papers from across the Core, not just Lit Trad papers, including scientific writing and applications to various scholarships and programs.

General Guidelines for your visit to the Writing Lab

Important Note: In order to maximize this time, please complete the "Upload your documents" step and the "Sign in" step listed below BEFORE your session begins.

Appointment Guidelines

  • Sign up:  For an online session, pick a slot in the "Writing Lab Online" Google appointment calendar using the link above.  For an in-person session in Braniff 304, pick a slot in the "Writing Lab In-Person" Google appointment calendar using the link above.
  • Upload your documents: Send copies of your documents to [email protected]. To streamline your session, complete this step BEFORE your session begins. Give your documents unique, recognizable names, such as your last name and the date of your session. You need to share:   Your paper (the most recent draft!) The prompt for your paper (if you have it)
  • Sign in: Follow this link to sign in. To make your session as efficient as possible, please complete this step BEFORE your session begins.
  • Come: Arrive a few minutes before the time of your appointment. If making an in-person visit, bring either a laptop or a hard copy of your paper to the session so that you and your tutor can see the same words, punctuation, formatting, etc. Also provide a copy of your paper prompt.   For an online session, open the invitation to the Zoom video conference you will have received in your inbox.
  • No shows: if for any reason you cannot make the session you signed up for, cancel the Google Meet appointment on your Calendar. If you have not done so half an hour before your session was scheduled to start, and you fail to come, that will be counted as a no show. Any student who has three no shows in a semester without reasonable notification could be banned from the Lab for the rest of the semester.

Other Important Information and Lab Rules

  • If you are 10 or more minutes late to your appointment, an appointment is not guaranteed.
  • Please note that your session's fruitfulness will correspond to your own preparedness. So please come with specific questions about your draft or outline, and prepare yourself to think and learn about the arts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Your tutor will not create a thesis for you (that would constitute plagiarism!) or provide your provisional thesis with textual argumentation. Instead, he or she will help you to develop your thoughts about the subject as you present it in your paper.
  • Your session is only 25 minutes long. Due to the conversational nature of this kind of learning, you should NOT expect to work through an entire paper in one session. Instead, you are more likely to focus intently upon a few areas of improvement.
  • Undergraduates are limited to one 25 minute slot per day per assignment.
  • Tutors are not allowed to edit, review, or critique take-home, out-of-class exams without the written consent of the exam-giving instructor.
  • Tutors will comment on grammar, syntax, organization, and/or argumentation of the draft presented.  Their task is to show where the paper needs to improve, not to re-write the paper.  For that reason, tutors will point out consistent errors in grammar and syntax, but not correct them all.  Similarly, tutors will point out problems with evidence use or information flow, but they will not generate the paper's argument, evidence, or information.

Should you have any questions regarding the Lab, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Director:

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
