PERCENTAGE TO GPA CONVERSION RULE

As for the percentage to GPA conversion, the following rule applies.

  • If candidate’s university has provided GPA corresponding to the percentage on the transcript, or if his/her university prescribes some formula for conversion, then, that will apply. This formula should be mentioned clearly on University website and/or candidate’s transcript.
  • Otherwise, the following formula, will apply: GPA = percentage/10 If the GPA of the candidate is not in the scale of 10 but in the scale of K (e.g., 4 or 8), then: GPA = GPAOnScaleK*10/(K) Here, GPAOnScaleK is candidate’s GPA on the scale of K. For GPA, rounding-off will not be done. For example, if a candidate’s GPA is 6.98 and the GPA criterion is 7.00, then, the candidate will not be considered as eligible.

Computer Science and Engineering IIT Kanpur

Admission to phd program.

For detailed information on PhD admission in IIT Kanpur, including information on how to apply online, please visit the admission site of Dean of Academic Affairs. This page provides brief information relevant to applicants to CSE department.

Highlights of the PhD program

Although the PhD program at IIT Kanpur has always had a strong academic reputation, the terms and conditions of the program were until recently rather unattractive. This has changed in recent years.

The PhD program in Computer Science and Engineering has recently been overhauled. Today, both academically and otherwise, we believe IIT Kanpur offers one of the most attractive PhD programs in India.

Annual salary has been raised. Students receive at least Rs. 1.8 Lakhs , and normally all of the tuition cost as well as hostel/accommodation cost is covered. This means that this income is unburdened, and in a low-cost living environment like Kanpur, this compares favrourably to salaries of Rs. 4 lakhs or more in the metros.

Depending on performance, the salary can even be as high as Rs. 2.4 lakhs .

In addition, outstanding candidates can compete for the Infosys scholarships (two currently available but likely to expand), paying Rs. 2.2 to 2.5 Lakhs with Rs. 1.8 Lakhs as salary component. PhD students in networking can apply for the Lucent Bell Labs fellowship scheme.

Research related visits abroad are now de rigeur for broadening one's horizons. At IIT Kanpur, such visits are strongly encouraged upto once every two years, for presenting papers or attending short schools at reputed international conferences and universities. This program is sponsored by Microsoft. In addition there are numerous opportunities for working on projects involving foreign collaborators and visitors.

Students can spend 4-6 months at any university / research institute in the world with all expenses paid. A longer duration visit is also possible.

Funding for international conference travel is available in plenty.

Home leave travel is covered every year.

Admission procedures have been simplified, and the admission process is now conducted throughout the year.

However, the most important reason to join the PhD program at IIT Kanpur remains the quality of the department (it was the first department in India to offer Computer Science as a separate discipline), and its faculty .

Eligibility for Admission

In order to apply for the PhD, you must normally have an MTech/ME in any branch of engineering. An MCA degree is considered equivalent to the BTech/BE degree and is not normally sufficient for admission.

Direct Admission : In certain exceptional cases, where the candidate is one of the toppers in an undergraduate BE/BTech program from a reputed university, he/she may be eligible for direct admission into PhD after BE. Such candidates must have secured 75% in their qualifying examination, and must also have a valid GATE score. Minimally, students in any branch of engineering, or those with MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Statistics may also be considered, but you must demonstrate a strong Computer Science grasp (for example, you may have a high GATE score in CS).

  • Some requirements may differ for candidates under QIP (Quality Improvement Program), Defence Personnel, SC/ST, and other sponsored categories. More information is available on the website of the IITK Senate Post-Graduate Committee ( SPGC ).

Admission Procedure

The application form is available from central admission site , but in case of emergency or other problems, you can also apply with the vita and other details by e-mail or on plain paper.

All applications should be sent to the following address:

Admissions In-Charge (PhD)

Computer Science and Engg. Dept.

Indian Institute of Technology

Kanpur 208016 (UP)

A sponsored applicant is responsible for securing the permission of his employer before applying, or at the very least, by the date of test/interview. No candidate will be considered for admission if the employer's permission is not received by such date, and such applicants are requested to defer their interview/test till the next walk-in date.

Note : Women candidates are exempted from payment of examination/test/interview fees for admission.

Residency requirement

Normally all candidates in our PhD program are required to be resident on campus. Candidates sponsored from reputed research organizations, who are conducting their PhD work co-advised by a reputed guide at their organization, may be eligible to complete their PhD off campus. Only for such sponsored candidates, the minimum residency requirement is one semester, during which they will need to complete the course requiements. However, frequent visits to IIT Kanpur are still normally required.

Currently there is no plan for an off-campus PhD program. Candidates sponsored by organizations in Kanpur may be eligible for a part-time PhD program.

Admissions Process and Timetable

PhD candidates can join at any point during the academic year. The actual process is that once a few applications have been received, a shortlist is prepared and the selected candidates are called for a "walk-in" interview which may include a short test. A permanent Selection Committee has been constituted for admission to the PhD Program of the Department. This Selection Committee will conduct the written test/interview, etc. and recommend candidates for admission.

Admission of INRA (Indian Nationals Residing Abroad)

Such candidates must have been residing abroad continuously for at least one year at the time of applying admission. Their applications may be processed as and when they are received or according to any schedule convenient to the Department. The applications are scrutinized to make sure that, both in terms of qualification and attainment, they are compatible with the students admitted in the general category.

Admission of Foreign Nationals

Further details regarding admission procedures for QIP, Defence, INRA and Foreign Nationals may be obtained from SPGC .

Minimum Qualifications for admission to Full-time PhD Programmes

Table 1 defines the minimum qualifications required for admission to full-time Ph. D. programmes at IIT Delhi. Please note:

These are Institute minimum requirements and any Department/Centre/School operating through their DRC/CRC/SRC can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.

This table includes most of the degrees, but each DRC/CRC/SRC is free to specify the qualifications and disciplines acceptable for admission to their programmes.

Candidates in the final year of their programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance until the preceding semester (preceding year if their programmes are year based) would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In any case, all admissions are provisional at first and it is confirmed only after all certificates and previous records are duly checked and verified, a process which may take a few weeks into the starting semester.

Table 1: Minimum Qualification for Admission to full-time PhD Programmes

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (Sr. No.3 in Table 1) is relaxed from 70% to 65% (CGPA relaxed from 7.00 to 6.50).

Qualifying degree performance is computed by aggregating performance over all the semesters/years of the qualifying degree, as per the credit or weightage system approved in the institution/ board where the degree has been completed.

Requirement of qualification in GATE / National Exam is waived for the following categories of applicants:

Currently registered students in Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) pursuing B.Tech./B.E./ Integrated M. Tech/ Integrated M.Sc. Programmes (or any other programme of minimum four year duration, admission to which is on the basis of JEE), who have completed 6 semesters or more, and have CGPA of 8.00 or above (on a 10 point scale). For purposes of shortlisting, the primary method of evaluation (i.e., CGPA/CPI, or aggregate percentage, whichever is appropriate) followed by the institution where candidate has obtained his/her qualifying degree will be used by IIT Delhi for determining whether the candidate meets the final shortlisting requirements.

For assistantship purposes only (and not for qualification), candidates with M.B.B.S. qualification will be considered equivalent to M. Tech., for admission to Ph.D. programme in Centre for Biomedical Engineering;

For candidates with M.A. degree in English, a 5% relaxation in marks or 0.5 relaxation in CGPA may be permitted for admission to the Ph.D. programme in Humanities and Social Sciences;

IIT Goa - Ph.D.

Life in Goa is very much happening and the same goes for campus life. Although, Ph.D. students find very little time after their research for leisure. The events organized at the campus are filled with fun and excitement. My group also went clubbing at night and we enjoyed it a lot. Amenities in the classroom and the infrastructure of the campus are top-notch. Labs are equipped with the latest equipment.

I didn't sit for placements as I wanted to go for the post of Assistant professor here at the institute itself. In 2020, the highest CTC was recorded as Rs. 43 LPA, and a total of 121 companies participated in the placements. 87% of the students got placed in the general placements. Microsoft, Paytm, Reliance Jio, KPMG, L&T, LTTS, ARM, Intel, and VMware were the top recruiters of the placement week.

Honest Review

Faculties are highly knowledgeable and with 100% interest, they put lots of effort to make students understand the concept. Each class has about 55 to 60 students. Monthly internal exams are taken thrice a semester and at the end of each semester, an external exam is there. External exam papers and checking are done by VTU University. If we study the prescribed textbook thoroughly they we can score very decent marks in the final exam. Everything marking, paper setting etc is done fairly since it comes under VTU. Under VTU more than 200 colleges come under so you can imagine how reputed VTU university is and so is the final degree provided also have a lot of value outside the college. Therefore I suggest you join the Don Bosco Institute of Technology.

Annually fest is there called as "VISMAY" And other festivals are also celebrated from time to time. Almost every week some of the other workshops are conducted. In the library plenty of books are present. Apart from academics, other books are also present in a quite decent number. Also, the department library is there where all department students can access the books. The classroom has fans and is fully ventilated and the lighted rooms are. Sports competitions and extracurricular activities frequently take place. Don Cisco official website is there. The Alumni group is also there. And various other telegram groups etc are also there.

Nitc Review

Campus life and campus is very beautiful. All the facilities are there needed by a student. There are different clubs are there related to sports culture and other activities. The library has a vast collection of books and journals. Playground swimming pool badminton hall table tennis basketball courts volleyball courts etc are different sports facilities. There are many cultural and technical fests happen like Ragam Tathva etc.

I want to do MTech in Computer Science and Engineering. I want to get placement in big tech companies. The faculty-student ratio was good around 1:4. All the faculties are very well qualified, almost all of them are having doctorates from reputed universities. Exam happens according to the academic calendar and the difficulty level was medium.

A step to bright future .

Internships opportunities.

The college had a good intership opportunity available. Which helps students to get good placements to earn their living. This intership helps students a lot. The company's names are Infosys ltd., Accenture and Microsoft, etc. The companies provide many project and college help students a lot in completing the project and getting a good placement.

The college organise term test every ans month and sometimes also organise mock tests for students's good preparation. The college also had a well managed library with lots of books of every field the student required ,the library help student a lot in enhancing their knowledge. Also college also had a sports field for students fitness .

The life of campus is awesome. Here all the clubs are available. Like dance, music, sport, poetry, robotics, and few cultural clubs. Lot of journals and books are available in digital library but those are access to only college students.

I would like to explore some research which help in real time scenario, so our college focus more on research, especially, machine learning and deep learning, and image processing. The bad aspect of college is that tuition fee is high.

Excellent institute

The curriculum is very flexible. The curriculum is heavily focused on the research just like as any other PhD program. Field work very important in the PhD to collect data and work on a original research problem and add new knowledge in the existing literature. To get your PhD degree, you have to submit an thesis , free of plagiarism and you have to defend it in front of your judging panel.

The college has others extracurricular activities also.. fresher party by seniors then we do celebrates teacher days and others. Convocation ceremony and farewell party for the graduating students also organized by the institute. They are various clubs for students from literacy club to coding clubs, this clubs frequently take part in various national and state level competiton

For Ph.D students, first two semester for their course work. That is every scholar should take four 3 credits course as a course work. After completing course work, Scholars should clear the comprehensive exam and viva where they mainly checking our basics thorough or not. Then we can our research start fully.

Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing is a Institution of national importance. Thus facilities are having good profiles with high exposure from aboard university. Their teaching skill also are very different than from the other engineering colleges.

Supportive and a Positive Environment

The university has a Student's Mall housing Food Court, Stationery & Book Shop, Salon, Dispensary and Branded Outfit Shops. The Campus also has Coffee Shops and kiosks in its spread. The auditorium is regularly used for organizing cultural, technical and academic events and screening of entertainment and educational movies.the University has launched its own community radio – BBD FM at 90.8 MHz to educate, sensitize and share knowledge with students and community. BBD FM at 90.8 MHz through its programs exclusively designed seeks to reach out to the masses of Lucknow and adjoining localities on issues concerning health, education, environment, community development, scientific awareness, cultural and social welfare, civic & social issues etc.

I entered the university through my JEE score. But UPTU marks were also taken into consideration for the admission process. Since it is one of the best private universities in Lucknow, good score was the criteria for the admission to any of the courses that they offered. When I visited the university in Lucknow, the management team assisted me in every way possible. They guided me and answered every query that I and my parents had.

Entrance preview.

For PhD, institute conducts a written test and interview. The written test is a lot like GATE but the question solving requires good mathematics and deep understanding. The interview panel will sure make you very afraid and you will forget 80% of the things that you prepared but the interviewers ask in such a manner that they will extract everything that you knew ever in your life.

College Events

The college itself is a complete society. Every festival is celebrated overlooking the religion including saraswati puja and Christmas and no doubt the national festivals. Apart from this several cultural events are also organised which include dance, music, art, sports, etc. National level events are also celebrated such as swacch Bharat Abhiyan.

Fee structure and facilities.

The mideterm examinations are conducted in the middle of each semester so that students can understand whether they have learned enough or not. It becomes very easy for teachers to assess the progress of the students and according the remedial actions are initiated. The final semester examination is conducted according to a predefined calender of events which is published at the beginning of every academic year. The results are declared earliest possible and the failed students are given with the second opportunity for improvement. As far as these all examinations are concerned, the fee structure is feasible and worth of what we get from the institute.

The MoU with many research organizations and industries in and outside the country are allowing us to apply for the internship. Many of our student friends have completed their internships at IITs and a few are pursuing their research work at foreign universities like UTP Malaysia. The students of SGGS are supported with the stipend according their admissions under the programs such as QIP, TEQIP and Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme etc. The stipend is given as per the norms of funding agency of Govt. of India. Overall, all the students are happy about the research facilties, expert guidance and encouraging research environment and culture of the institute.

Exam structure.

Exam structure of every semester is that you have to appear for two class test and one final test. The class test is of 20 marks each and final has got weight age of 60 marks. 40 percent is pass mark in total. there is no gaps between two exam. for CT it will end in 3 days and final exam will end in 5 days. So you have hectic schedule during exam. Labs are conducted in second half of day. It may be either everyday or one or two day depending on course and subject. For general subject classes schedule is not very hectic or back to back. Overall It has good schedules.

Campus life is very good. A healthy atmosphere is here. There is no biasness on the basis of religion and cast. there is no gender biasness. Girls and boys ratio is 30:70, which is much higher than any other IITs. So many cultural , technical and sports fest are organized throughout the year. There are many experts talk from industry and academic is held for exposure to students. All events are at grand level in which many outside students participate. Many debate and essay competition are held at institute level.
