Market Research

Before starting a layers chicken farming business, conducting thorough market research is an essential step that can greatly influence your success. Understanding the market dynamics, consumer demand, and competition in the poultry industry is crucial for making informed decisions and positioning your business for growth. Part of conducting comprehensive market research for your layers chicken farming business is gaining a deep understanding of the pricing dynamics within your target market. This involves not only knowing the prevailing market prices for eggs but also identifying potential customers, their ordering frequency, and the quantities they typically purchase. Identify your target market for layers chicken eggs. Are you planning to sell directly to consumers, local businesses, or wholesale to larger distributors? Determine the demographics, preferences, and purchasing behaviors of your potential customers.  Also determine the pricing strategy for your layers chicken eggs. Calculate your production costs, including feed, labor, and overhead expenses, to set competitive yet profitable prices. Consider pricing models that align with market demand and your business objectives, such as premium, value, or volume pricing.

Analyze the competitive landscape in your area. Who are your competitors, and what is their market share? What sets your layers chicken farming business apart from others? Investigate their pricing strategies, product quality, and customer satisfaction levels. This information can guide you in developing a competitive advantage and differentiating your business in the market. Examine the supply chain involved in the layers chicken farming industry, from sourcing chickens and feed to egg distribution. Identify potential suppliers and establish relationships with reliable partners. Understanding the supply chain can help you optimize your operations and ensure a steady flow of resources.

Land For Poultry Egg Production Business

When starting a poultry egg farm you need the right amount of land and proper housing for your birds. The size of your project will determine the size of the land you will need. You also have to consider transport networks – your layers farm should be easily accessible as you will regularly have to transport eggs to the market and deliver stock feeds to the poultry farm. Other factors to consider include labor costs – you should locate your farm where cheap labour is available so as to cut operational costs thus increasing profitability of the poultry egg farming business. The location should be secure and have reliable water supply as the layers chickens require water daily. An egg farm business should be located close to the target market as eggs will need to be regularly transported to the market. You should not  locate the poultry egg farming project close to rivers or streams as this may result in the pollution of water by chicken drops during rainfall periods.

Layers Deep Litter System Vs Battery Cage System

There are 2 main housing systems that are used for layers. These are the deep litter system and the battery cage system. The deep litter system is whereby the layer chickens stay on a cemented floor of the layer house. It’s called deep litter because you will have to spread litter/bedding on the floor to provide comfort for the layers chickens. The bedding is usually in the form of wood shavings and saw dusts. In the deep litter system, the feeders & drinkers will be placed on the floor or hanged at a level where the layers chickens can reach. The battery cage system is a way of raising layers chickens in cages. This is the most popular way of carrying out commercial egg laying business. One of the main advantages of the battery cage system is that it uses less space as compared to the deep litter system. Thus you can rear a large number of layers birds per unit area as compared to the deep litter system. The battery cage system also reduces feed wastage (in deep litter system birds can move around and spill feed), ensures easy stock take, makes it easier to identify layer birds which are not producing eggs, and reduces cannibalism and egg eating.

Management of the layers birds is easier in the cage system. Battery cages are usually equipped with nipple drinkers that supply water to the chickens automatically, which is convenient. Layers cage system requires less labour as compared to deep litter system, thus increasing profitability of the egg production business. Diseases spread faster in the deep litter system as compared to the layers cages system – this is because the layers cage system limits the movement of birds, and the layer birds do not come into contact with their droppings. The disadvantage of battery cage system in poultry egg farming business include : its capital intensive as the cages are expensive, the layers chickens can easily suffer from leg problems, cage fatigue, and increased deposition of fat in the body. The housing system that you use should be clearly stated in your layers poultry egg production business plan.

Layers Chickens Housing

You should provide good housing for the layers chickens so as to have a profitable egg production business. When you are planning to construct a layers egg chicken house, you have to select a site which is well-drained with plenty of natural air movement. Layers chickens cannot adjust well to temperature extremes, so it is very essential that the layers hens be housed, cared and provided with an environment that will enable them to produce eggs efficiently. The design and size of the layers chicken house is determined by the number of layers chickens being kept, the cost and the climatic condition of the area. It is essential to house layers chickens of the same age together. This is to prevent potential problems like high risk of continuous infection. It also allows the farmer to administer the right feeds and follow the right method of lighting for the layers chickens. Your housing for the layers chickens can be barns, layer cages, chicken runs, hutches or chicken coops. The housing should provide adequate space for the layers chickens, should have a good ventilation system, should protect the layers chickens from extreme weather conditions and predators. Light stimulates egg production in layers, so the housing should have access to sunlight or artificial lighting. Costs of constructing the housing should be included in the poultry egg production business plan.

Equipment for Layers Egg Production Business

The equipment you need will be determined by the kind of system you choose to use, whether it is deep litter system or a cage system. The required equipment include feeders, drinkers, lighting system, chicken layer nests and waste disposal system. If you choose the cage system, make sure that you invest in layer cages that already have laying nests, feeders, and drinkers. For drinking, the nipple drinkers are worth the investment for the chicken cage. You can also consider using tanks, water regulators and pipes together with the drinking nipples for a complete drinking system. You should also choose the right chicken feeder trough to save on chicken feed – some chicken feeders have bad design which leads to wastage of feed.

The other equipment that may be required includes sprinklers, a moisture meter, vaccinator and eggs transportation trays to name a few. You should also invest in manure cleaning equipment especially if you keep the chickens in barns or chicken runs. Wet chicken manure leads to a high concentration of ammonia, which is bad for your hens’ respiratory system and eyes. As such, ensure that you regularly clean the barn or wherever you decide to keep the layers chickens. Take note that organic manure is great for your garden and some people sell it to crop growers. If you use a battery cage or chicken cage, you can save yourself space and the chickens can be separated from the manure. The layer farming business plan should take into account the costs of purchasing the equipment.

Point of Lay Chickens vs Layer Chicks

When investing in a poultry egg production business, you will have to make a choice between starting with day old layer chicks or point of lay birds. Point of layer chickens are young layers hens that are about to start laying eggs – they start to lay eggs at about 19 weeks of age. You can purchase day old layer chicks and feed them until they are 19 weeks old then they will start laying eggs – this means that you will have to wait for about 5 months before getting any revenue. So it may be best to invest in point of lay chickens since they are ready to start laying eggs – thus your layers egg production business can immediately start generating revenue with no waiting time. Take note of the risks when purchasing point of lay chickens. Make sure that the chickens are of high quality because you may end up spending too much money on layers with low egg production numbers. Some of the ways you can tell if point of lay chickens are of good quality is by observing the birds. Healthy birds are lively, with no forms of injuries and they respond well to feeding.

Whatever you decide to start with make sure that you buy your day old chicks or point of lay chickens from a reliable accredited hatchery where the parent stock is well managed. Layers chickens from different hatcheries vary significantly in terms of their quality and it will determine the success of your poultry egg farming business. If you buy point of lay chickens which are not well vaccinated, the layer chickens will have a low rate of egg production and a very high mortality rate. This will obviously lead to a financial loss for your layers chicken farming business.

When deciding whether to buy day old chicks or chicken layer eggs consider your level of experience raising chickens in addition to your available resources. If you have the capital as well as some experience raising day old chicks you can start rearing day old chicks. However, if your resources are limited you may want to consider starting with point of lay chickens. Make sure that you consider the vaccination history and age of the point of lay chickens. Many breeders will claim that the chickens have been vaccinated but that may not be the case. So, you must avoid buying point of lay chickens or even day old chicks from unreliable hatcheries. The costs of purchasing the point of lay birds or layers chicks should be included in the layers egg production business plan.

Layers Feeds

When it comes to feeding your layer chickens consider using a complete feed from a recognized feed store. Complete feeds provide your birds with a nutritionally balanced diet. In addition to the feed you provide your chickens, you can also supplement the layer chickens with scratch grains, table scraps and clippings. Scratch grains are low in protein and high in energy and fiber, but this is based on the grains you use. When you feed your layer chickens with scratch grains together with complete feeds, it helps dilute the nutrition levels in the carefully formulated diets. You can also feed your layer chickens table scraps such as peelings, stale bread, and leafy vegetables. Just make sure that the scraps are not rotten to prevent botulism. You can add clippings such as pasture or tender plants. Feeding your layer chickens well will give you higher laying rates, better persistency and a longer production cycle, thus increasing the profitability of your egg production business.

To produce a high number of eggs, the layer chickens must get adequate feed. Hens need plenty of calcium in their diets to lay eggs with hard, strong shells. The feed for layers chickens is called Layers Mash. The mash is specially formulated to provide all the nutrients they need in the correct quantities. Feed must be available in the trough at all times, as well as cool, fresh water in the bottles. On average, each laying hen requires 100g-120g of feed every day. The aim of the egg producer is to convert a given amount of feed into as many eggs as possible. It is very important to give the layers the right feeds, and the right quantities, so that they grow well and have a high egg production rate. The poultry egg farming business plan should take into account the costs of the layers feeds.

Business Model

There are two primary options for starting the layers egg farming business: one can either begin with day-old chicks or opt for point-of-lay chickens. The key cost components of this business revolve around acquiring the chicks or point-of-lay chickens and providing them with feed. For day-old chicks, an essential aspect of the operation is raising them to maturity, typically up to 21 weeks of age when they start laying eggs. In contrast, point-of-lay chickens are already at the egg-laying stage upon acquisition, requiring you to provide them with food and water, after which they will consistently lay eggs. The revenue generated from selling these eggs significantly surpasses the input costs and operational expenses, leading to a healthy profit margin. What sets this business model apart is the consistent egg production throughout the year, ensuring a steady stream of income. The layers chickens can continue laying eggs for a period of up to 18 months. After this period, you have the opportunity to sell them, generating additional revenue. To maintain the sustainability of your layers chicken farming business, it’s necessary to replace the flock with a new batch of chicks or point-of-lay chickens. This cyclical process allows you to rejuvenate your flock, ensuring continuous egg production and income generation.

Whether you choose day-old chicks or point-of-lay chickens as your starting point, the layers’ ability to lay eggs consistently becomes the cornerstone of profitability in this business. This steady egg production provides a reliable source of income, offering financial stability for the layers chicken farming venture. By carefully managing the inputs, primarily feed and water, and maintaining the health and well-being of your chickens, you can maximize the production of high-quality eggs, ultimately contributing to the long-term success and sustainability of your layers chicken farming business.

Management and Labour

The number of farm workers you need will depend on the size of your poultry egg production project and your layer hosing system. Battery cage system requires less labour as compared to the deep litter system. If you are operating a small poultry egg farming business e.g. 100 birds, you and your family may be enough to take care of the birds. However if you are keeping 2000 chickens for egg production, then you will need full time employees to manage the poultry farm.  There is need for good technical knowledge of poultry egg production techniques for success in the business, and good management skills. The salaries and wages of your employees should be included in your poultry egg production business plan.

The amount of capital required for the poultry egg production business depends on the scale of the project. You can get a loan from the bank, or funding from investors, to use as capital to start your poultry egg farming business. If you plan to raise capital from investors and a loan from the bank, you need a good poultry egg farming business plan. If you don’t have access to investors and bank loan, you can use your personal savings and start small, and grow your business overtime. Egg production business is very profitable. If you reinvest the profits you get, you can quickly grow.

Marketing Plan

Layers are mainly reared for egg production. There are also possibilities of selling them as off-layers for meat. They can also be sold as layers to other farmers. That is why some of the core customer segments are consumers in general, traders, retailers, and farmers. Marketing of layers must be targeted to the intended prospects. Some of the most strategic targets are bulk clients. Examples are supermarkets, shops, hotels, and restaurants. Marketing to them can entail approaching them with a proposal to become their supplier. Another strategy is to participate at local farmers’ markets. The thrust is to capture customers who purchase in bulk, regularly. If that is achieved it will minimize marketing and logistical costs as well. The heart of the marketing plan must be centered on digital marketing. This includes content marketing via a website, social media, online marketplaces, and email marketing, amongst others. There are countless marketing opportunities on online platforms.  This means you should have professionally designed and detailed e-fliers that you use on social media. Effective marketing of layers must skirt middlemen in order to deal directly with paying customers.

Market for Poultry Eggs

The demand for eggs is very high. Over 82 million tonnes of eggs is consumed globally annually. That’s a lot! Eggs are considered an alternative cheap source of proteins. Almost every household consumes boiled/fried eggs. Increasing protein consumption and rising incomes drive consumption of eggs.   Around the world, consumption of eggs is on the increase. This increase is particularly notable in developing countries where changing diets have people consuming a greater number of calories from protein sources like poultry meat and eggs. You can supply your eggs to individual households, supermarkets / grocery shops, wholesalers, schools, restaurants, companies, organizations, events etc.

6. SWOT Analysis

Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC do not intend to launch out with trial and error hence the need to conduct a proper SWOT analysis.

We know that if we get it right from the onset, we would have succeeded in creating the foundation that will help us build a standard commercial layer poultry farm and egg production company that will favorably compete with leading commercial layer poultry farms and egg production companies like Cal – Maine, Land O’Lake, Inc., Michael Foods and Rose Acres Farms in the United States of America and in other parts of the world.

We engaged the services of a core professional in the area of business consulting and structuring to assist our organization in building a well – structured commercial layer poultry farm and egg production company that can favorably compete in the highly competitive commercial poultry farms and egg production industry in the United States and the world at large.

Part of what the team of business consultant did was to work with the management of our organization in conducting a SWOT analysis for Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC. Here is a summary of the result of the SWOT analysis that was conducted on behalf of Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC;

Our strength as a commercial layer poultry farm and egg production company is the fact that we have healthy relationships with loads of major players (agriculture merchants) in the industry; both suppliers of poultry feeds and medications and buyers of live layers (chickens) and eggs within and outside of the United States of America.

We have some of the latest commercial poultry farming hatchery, tools and equipment that will help us raise and produce eggs in commercial quantities with less stress. Aside from our relationship (network) and equipment, we can confidently boast that we have some the most experienced hands in Houston – Texas on our payroll.

Our weakness could be that we are a new commercial poultry farm and egg production company in the United States, and perhaps it might take us sometime to attract big time customers in the industry. We are aware of this and from our projection will overcome this weakness with time and turn it to a major advantage for the business.

  • Opportunities:

The opportunities that are available to us as a standard commercial layer poultry farm and egg production company cannot be quantified. We know that there are loads of households and businesses such as grocery stores, hotels and fast food restaurants that can’t do without a daily supply of live chicken and eggs. We are well positioned to take advantage of this opportunity.

Some of the threats and challenges that we are likely going to face when we start our commercial layer poultry farm and egg production company are global economic downturn that can impact negatively on household spending, bad weather cum natural disasters (draughts, epidemics), unfavorable government policies and the arrival of a competitor (a commercial farm that engage in the rearing of chickens and other birds) within same location.

There is hardly anything you can do as regards these threats and challenges other than to be optimistic that things will continue to work for your good.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trends

The Poultry and Chicken Egg Production industry has greatly benefited from campaigns advertising the health benefits of chickens and eggs as a good source of protein. No doubt, the increased demand of chicken and eggs from households and food related businesses and of course the growing popularity of specialty and processed eggs have rapidly improved revenue growth for the industry.

In the face of this growth, profit margin has suffered from rising feed costs and also regulations regarding animal welfare. As a matter of fact, one of the new trends is that with the recent advancement in technology, poultry farmers can now comfortably predict and produce large quantities of chickens/birds and eggs per time.

8. Our Target Market

Indeed, the target market of those who are the end consumer of commercial poultry farm produce and also those who benefits from the business value chain of the poultry farming and egg production industry is all encompassing; it is far–reaching.

Every household consumes produce from commercial poultry farms be it chicken or egg. So also, almost all hotels and fast restaurants sell meals made from chicken and eggs. In essence a commercial poultry farmer cum layer farmer should be able to sell his or her chickens and eggs to as many people as possible.

In view of that, we have positioned our business to attract consumers of chicken and eggs not just in the United States of America alone but in other parts of the world. We have conducted our market research and survey and we will ensure that we meet and surpass the expectations we set for the business. Below is a list of the people and business that we will market our live chickens and eggs to;

  • Individuals
  • Restaurants
  • Fast food eateries
  • Grocery stores
  • Agriculture merchants

Our competitive advantage

It is easier to find entrepreneur flocking towards an industry that is known to generate consistent income which is why there are more commercial poultry farmers in the United States of America and of course in most parts of the world.

Statistics has it that there are 2.2 million farms in the United States of America, covering an area of 922 million acres. These goes to show that there are an appreciable number of farmers in the United States of America but that does not mean that there is stiff competition in the industry.

As a matter of fact, entrepreneurs are encouraged by the government to embrace commercial farming cum poultry farming and egg production. This is because part of the success of any nation is her ability to cultivate her own food and also export food to other nations of the world.

Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC is fully aware that there are competitions when it comes to selling live layers and eggs all over the globe, which is why we decided to carry out thorough market research so as to know how to take advantage of the available market in the United States and in other parts of the world.

We have done our homework and we have been able to highlight some factors that will give us competitive advantage in the marketplace; some of the factors are effective and reliable layer poultry farming and egg production processes that can help us sell our produce at competitive prices, good network and excellent relationship management.

Another competitive advantage that we are bringing to the industry is the fact that we have healthy relationship with loads of major players (agriculture merchants) in the industry; both suppliers of poultry feed, medications, buyers of live chickens and eggs within and outside of the United States of America.

We have some of the latest commercial poultry farming hatchery, tools and equipment that will help us raise layers and produce eggs in commercial quantities with less stress. Aside from our relationship (network) and equipment, we can confidently boast that we have some the most experienced hands in Houston – Texas in our payroll.

Lastly, all our employees will be well taken care of and their welfare package will be among the best within our category (startups commercial poultry farms and egg production companies in the United States) in the industry. Besides, in setting up any business, the amount or cost will depend on the approach and scale you want to undertake. If you intend to go big by renting / leasing a big facility, then you would need a good amount of capital as you would need to ensure that your employees are well taken care of, and that your facility is conducive enough for workers to be creative and productive.

This means that the start-up can either be low or high depending on your goals, vision and aspirations for your business.

The tools and equipment that will be used are nearly the same cost everywhere, and any difference in prices would be minimal and can be overlooked. As for the detailed cost analysis for starting a commercial layer poultry farm and egg production business, it might differ in other countries due to the value of their money.

Below are some of the basic areas we will spend our start-up capital in setting up our commercial layer poultry farm and egg production business;

Generating Funds/Startup Capital for Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC

Finance is a very important factor when it comes to starting a business such as commercial layer poultry farm and egg production business. No doubt raising startup capital for a business might not come cheap, but it is a task that an entrepreneur must go through.

Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC is a family business that is solely owned and financed by Grace Milton and her immediate family members. They do not intend to welcome any external business partners, which is why she has decided to restrict the sourcing of the startup capital to 3 major sources. These are the areas we intend generating our startup capital;

  • Generate part of the startup capital from personal savings
  • Source for soft loans from family members and friends
  • Apply for loan from my Bank

N.B:  We have been able to generate about $150,000 (Personal savings $100,000 and soft loan from family members $50,000) and we are at the final stages of obtaining a loan facility of $350,000 from our bank. All the papers and documents have been signed and submitted, the loan has been approved and any moment from now our account will be credited with the amount.

14. Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

The future of a business lies in the number of loyal customers that they have, the capacity and competence of their employees, their investment strategy and the business structure. If all of these factors are missing from a business (company), then it won’t be long before the business closes shop.

One of our major goals of starting Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC is to build a business that will survive off its own cash flow without injecting finance from external sources once the business is officially running.

We know that one of the ways of gaining approval and winning customers is to retail our live layer – chickens and eggs a little bit cheaper than what is obtainable in the market and we are well prepared to survive on lower profit margin for a while.

Grace Milton® Poultry Farms, LLC will make sure that the right foundation, structures and processes are put in place to ensure that our staff welfare are well taken of. Our company’s corporate culture is designed to drive our business to greater heights and training and retraining of our workforce is at the top burner.

How to Start a Layer Chicken Farming Business for Egg Production?

Layer poultry farming means raising egg laying poultry birds for the purpose of commercial egg production. Layer chickens are such a special species of hens, which need to be raised from when they are one day old. They start laying eggs commercially from 18-19 weeks of age. They remain laying eggs continuously till their 72-78 weeks of age. They can produce about one kg of eggs by consuming about 2.25 kg of food during their egg laying period.

Benefits of Layer Farming

  • It requires less investment compared to rearing other livestock. While chicken will start laying eggs in 8 to 10 weeks, broilers can be sold after 6 weeks by which time they would have grown to 1.25 kg weight.
  • It gives rapid return on investment. Chicken start laying eggs in 8 to 10 weeks and broilers can be sold for meat between 6 and 10 weeks. The interval between generations is very small and hence, production can be phenomenally increased within a short period.
  • Broilers intake of feed is comparatively very low while it produces maximum possible amount of food for us.

Egg Production for Layer Poultry Farming

Egg production from a Layer Poultry Farming depends on the care and farm management.

Within the first 20 weeks of age, about 5% of hens start laying eggs. About 10% birds start laying at their 21 weeks of age.

What Is a Business Plan?

A business plan is a roadmap for yoursmall farm. It is both process and product. During the writing of a farm business plan, you'll develop an overall vision and mission for your business. You will think about your short- and long-term goals. You'll define the steps needed to achieve those goals. You'll set the direction for your business to develop over the next five years.

The goals in your business plan are the specific, measurable “things” you will achieve with your small farm. Short-term goals are defined as those that you will complete within one year. Long-term goals are those that take longer than one year to complete.

SMART Goals are:

  • Rewarding, and have a

Farm Strategy

This is where your business plan gets to looking forward. You are going to formulate your farm strategy from now into the next five years or so.

  • Gather information and research markets. Make sure that your farm plan fits into the general market in terms of supply and demand. Investigate and analyze industry trends, identify competitors, and define buyers.
  • SWOT Analysis. This is an analytical tool that can be used in making decisions. SWOT stands for: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. As a business, analyze your internal strengths and weaknesses. Then look externally at what opportunities and threats exist - competitors, new markets, government regulations, economic conditions, and so forth.
  • Create alternative strategies. Looking at the information you've gleaned and the analysis you just did, think through options for your farm strategy. Don't rely on price alone; economies of scale are challenging on the small farm level.
  • Don't jump to one conclusion immediately. Really spend some time fleshing out the specifics of some of the strategies and looking at their advantages and disadvantages. Try to find options that combine your internal strengths with opportunities in the external environment.
  • Look at all your strategies, then reread your mission statement. The ideal farm plan will fit your mission best.
  • Write an implementation plan. This is where you write a plan that will make your new strategy happen.

Marketing Strategy and Plan

In the next part of your farm business plan, you develop and outline a marketing strategy for your products and services. This can build on the research you did in the previous step. For each product, include the price, placement, and promotion ideas. Consider how you will convey real and perceived value to your customers.

Management Summary

This part of your business plan details your farm business’ structure. Everyone who is involved in the management of the business should be listed here. External resources are listed here as well.

Financial Analysis

In this section, you will need to detail the financial aspect of your farming operation. List your current finances in detail, including all income and operating expenses. Referring to your new strategy, you will forecast what is needed for future growth and to meet the goals you have outlined in terms of capital. Include what your future operating expenses will be.

Pulling It All Together

Writing a farm business plan is a big project. Don’t let that put you off. Your plan can be as simple as it needs to be for right now. Begin with your mission statement and goals. Do your homework by analyzing markets and researching competitors and trends. Have fun brainstorming alternative strategies and let them marinate a while. Take it one step at a time.

In addition to explaining the type of poultry farming business you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of chickens and/or turkeys produced, number of production contracts, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the poultry farm industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the poultry farm industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your poultry farming business plan:

  • How big is the poultry farm industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your poultry farm business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your target market.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your poultry farming business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: processors, grocery stores, and restaurants.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of poultry farm business you operate. Clearly, processors would respond to different marketing promotions than restaurants, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most poultry farm businesses primarily serve customers living in their same region, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other poultry farm businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes producers of other meat such as beef, pork, or fish, as well as producers of meat alternatives. You need to mention such competition as well.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other poultry farms with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be poultry farms located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What kinds of poultry do they produce (breeders, broilers, pullets)?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you use superior production methods?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a poultry farm business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of poultry farm company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to traditional poultry, will you provide organic or cage-free poultry?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the products and services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your poultry farm company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your poultry farm located near a processing facility, near a transportation hub, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your poultry farm marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in trade papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local agriculture extension offices
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your poultry farm, including animal care / feeding, flock supervision, animal transportation, sourcing feed, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to sign your 20th production contract, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your poultry farm to a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your poultry farm’s ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing poultry farms. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing farms or successfully running small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you supply 50 restaurants, or produce 2,000 birds for processing each month? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your poultry farming business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a poultry farm business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your farm title or lease, or blueprints of the production facility.

Putting together a business plan for your poultry farm is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will really understand the poultry farm industry, your competition, and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful poultry farming business.

How to Establish a Small-Scale, Pastured Poultry Operation

by Melanie Bare and Christine Ziegler-Ulsh

  • Resources for Farmers

Core Concepts

  • Livestock Management
  • Rotational Grazing

Sustainable poultry farming integrates birds with the farm and land in a way that, with proper management, promotes the health and well-being of the birds, the land, the farm, and the farmer.

What are the benefits of raising pastured poultry?

business plan for 1000 layers

Improved farm soil fertility and disease prevention.  Poultry enhance soil fertility by working their manure into the soil, and they help manage crop pests by grazing on weeds and insects. Also, birds can be rotated into pasture following other livestock (such as cattle) to control fly and parasite problems.

Increased farm profitability with minimal capital investment.  Pastured poultry enhance and diversify the farm operation, providing several income options with minimal investment for housing, equipment, and maintenance.

Better health for the chickens and consumers who eat their products.  Pastured birds eat grasses and legumes that contain Vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids, nutrients that are known to reduce cholesterol. Pastured birds also have more access to adequate space, fresh air, sunshine, and exercise, and thus maintain better physical health than confined birds (pastured birds require no hormones or antibiotics unless faced with acute illness). With more exercise, birds maintain a lower fat content, which is healthier for the bird and the consumer.

How do I raise pastured poultry?

The first priority of raising pastured poultry is providing the chickens with fresh pasture every day or every few days. Therefore, a key feature of a pastured poultry operation is a building and/or pasture design that moves easily and allows the chickens to graze and benefit from frequent fresh pasture (these designs are sometimes called “chicken tractors”).

A “chicken tractor” is simply a term, popularized by author and producer Andy Lee, used to describe any type of mobile poultry housing that allows birds access to pasture or an area of the garden. This type of housing permits the chickens to work the soil like a tractor (by scratching and pecking), controlling weeds and insects, and, at the same time, supplying natural fertilizer with their manure. Many poultry producers have adapted this type of mobile housing/pasture model to their farming system in order to raise a significant number of birds for profit.

Steps to establish a successful pastured poultry operation

Step 1. assess your goals and resources..

Begin your poultry operation by assessing your personal goals for the business (income, time availability, lifestyle, etc.) and listing your available business resources (your labor and that of family or employees, cash, skills, existing structures and systems, waste products that can be utilized profitably, etc.) on paper. By identifying your goals and assets right from the start, you establish a solid foundation upon which to build your operation and guide all your business decisions.

Step 2. Decide what kinds of poultry products you want to sell, and where you want to sell them.

Once you have identified your goals and assets, you must answer three important questions:

  • To whom will you sell your poultry products? Your choices include the general public, restaurants, wholesalers, retailers, or a combination of outlets. As you answer this question, be certain to study your local markets to see what products exist and what new products are needed, assess demand and prices for existing products, and identify possible niche markets you might serve.
  • Where do you want to sell your poultry products? Do you want to sell directly from your farm, at some venue off the farm (like a farmers’ market), or through wholesale distributors? The answer to this question will strongly influence the size, scope, and design of your operation.
  • Do you want to sell eggs, meat, or both? The answer to this question (decided largely by the customers and markets you choose in Questions #1 and #2) will determine the chicken breeds you raise and may affect the design of your housing, pastures, and processing facilities.

Most producers will tell you that direct marketing is the most effective, profitable, and rewarding way to sell your products. By establishing direct contact with your customers on your farm and/or at farmers markets, you increase your profits by pocketing the full retail price of your product, rather than allowing the wholesaler (middleman) to keep the retail mark-up.

business plan for 1000 layers

You can also increase your profits by processing your products to add value to them. Offer ready-made egg salad alongside your eggs, or marinated boneless skinless chicken breast next to your whole chickens. Also consider certifying your farm for organic production, because organic price premiums can double your profits.

Whether you sell retail or wholesale, organic or not, strive to sell all your birds up front, before you invest the time and money to produce them. Also, when setting your retail or wholesale price, be certain to calculate a price that covers all your production expenses, including labor. Many producers forget to pay themselves for labor and, thus, are unable to make a profit, support their families, and grow their businesses.

Step 3. Develop a budget.

Make a list of all the items you will need for every aspect of your operation, including: chicks or pullets, brooder equipment, feed, housing, pasture, fencing, feeders and waterers, processing equipment, product transportation, farm stand fees or rent on a retail space, and labor.

Assign a dollar value to each item; the total dollar value of that list will determine the cash you need to start your operation. This budget will help you define the initial size and scope of your operation, in line with your goals and resources.  The budget will also help you determine how much profit you will need to make to sustain your family and your operation. As you develop your budget, find creative ways to barter or trade for items, find them used or for free, or fashion them from fixtures that already exist on your farm. Each creative solution will reduce your start-up costs and increase your profit.

Step 4. Choose your breeds.

After you determine the products you will sell and the initial size of your operation, you must choose the appropriate layer or broiler breed(s) to meet your needs. Many pastured poultry producers favor the Cornish Cross as a meat bird because they gain weight quickly and have a flavor that is familiar to customers. Hybrid cross birds tend to produce more meat and eggs than purebred breeds. However, these newer breeds are also losing positive traits, such as foraging abilities, disease resistance, and adaptability to climate change, that have been “selected out” in favor of meat and egg production. Every breed has its own unique characteristics, and your choice of breed will depend on your farm site and marketing plan.

business plan for 1000 layers

Below are some suggested breeds, based on use. These suggestions are focused toward purebreds that were originally raised as dual purpose birds:

Broilers : Cornish Cross (currently being bred to regain foraging characteristics) is the preferred meat bird, but other suitable purebred meat birds include the Delaware and Java (though they will not reach market weight as quickly).

Layers : Rhode Island Red, Leghorn, and Plymouth Rock lay a large number of eggs as well as the Ancona (beautiful colored eggs) and Minora.

Dual Purpose : Australorp, Barred Plymouth Rock, Delaware, Java, New Hampshire, Rhode Island Red, and White Wyandotte.

Step 5. Design housing and pasture for your birds.

Begin by selecting a site or general area where the house and chickens will reside permanently or within which they’ll be moved. When choosing a site consider:

Direction : Orient the house toward the south in winter Soil drainage : Choose high, well drained ground with a south or southeast slope if possible Space requirements : Provide 2.0 – 2.5 square feet of indoor space per bird if they have outside access for free range.

Once you choose a site, you can begin to design an appropriate pasture and housing system for your birds. Several “pre-designed” alternative housing and pasture systems are available, or you can develop your own. The system you choose or design should fit well with your farm site and operational goals.

Examples of some “pre-designed” systems include:

The Pasture Poultry Pen by Joel Salatin : A 10’ x 12’ x 2’ floorless portable pen that is moved daily to fresh pasture. Building materials cost: $200 per pen. Advantages: inexpensive to build and houses large number of birds (80 – 90 birds). Disadvantages: time and labor intensive, intended primarily for raising broilers.

“Net Range” (or “Day Range”) by Andy Lee : Typically, a mobile hoop house structure surrounded by poultry fencing (“poultry netting”).  The housing is rotated frequently through pasture areas. Building costs are about $1,000 per pen, including labor. Advantages: good weather and predator protection; houses a very large number of birds; sturdy.  Disadvantages: requires more advanced pasture management skills.

Mini Barns for Day Range by Andy Lee : Similar to the Net Range design, with some moveable and some stationary features. Cost, advantages, and disadvantages similar to Net Range.

Yarding (for example, Label Rouge Production in France) : Stationary housing with access to outdoor yards or pasture during the day.  Building costs vary depending on the complexity of the structure, or the reuse of existing structures.  Advantages: little labor.  Disadvantages: if you do not subdivide and rotate through paddocks, the birds will eventually deplete the forage and create a high concentration of manure that increases the possibly of nutrient and pathogen build-up.

The Chicken Tractor by Andy Lee : A 4’ x 10’ moveable floorless pen that holds 20 broilers or 10 layers. Building costs are $75 per pen, including labor.  Advantages: inexpensive, and can be developed to integrate with vegetable production systems and/or improve soil fertility in gardens. Disadvantages: time and labor intensive, poor weather and predator protection.

Free Range (for example, “Skid Housing” by Herman Beck-Chenoweth or “Egg Mobiles” by Joel Salatin) : Mobile housing is moved regularly to encourage birds to range particular areas of pasture. Skid housing is built on runners. Egg mobiles (12’ x 20’) are designed for layers (portable housing with nests), built on trailer hitch and pulled with a tractor.  Building costs vary by design complexity and size. Advantages: more space for birds, less labor required, flexibility to produce more or fewer birds as demand requires. Disadvantages: unless fencing is used, these systems offer no predator protection. Also, significant acreage is needed so birds can be continually rotated to fresh pasture.

Brooder : Usually a barn or barn-like structure that houses chicks until they grow feathers and can be moved outdoors (at about 3 weeks). Some designs create outdoor housing that is brooder accessible so that chicks do not have to be moved twice. Basic brooder equipment costs about $100, and can hold about 250 chicks at a time.

No matter which system you choose, you will need to include the following features in your housing design:

Ventilation Insulation (not always necessary, but usually required in temperate climates) Walls Roof (needs to be waterproof and include an overhang for passive temperature regulation) Nests (only needed for layers: 1 square foot of area with 1 foot of head room) Roosts (2” x 2” stock, rounded or beveled, spaced 12 – 15 inches apart: should not be more than 2 feet off floor).

Step 6. Nutrition.

Like all living creatures, chickens require a balanced diet of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Protein requirements vary from 16-20% of the total feed weight, depending on the chickens’ stage of development and output. Most feeds consist of corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as vitamin and mineral supplements. Since chickens do not have teeth, they also need some form of grit (tiny stones or oyster shells) to aid the gizzard (an organ located before the small intestine) in digestion.

business plan for 1000 layers

Livestock nutritionists can help you develop an appropriate ration for your poultry, and many of these nutritionists are also organic feed suppliers. Feed costs (especially organic feed) can be fairly high. Therefore, if you are raising a significant number of birds, you may want to consider growing some or all of your own feed. Growing feed can reduce your expenses and make your operation more self-sufficient and sustainable.

Step 7. Maintain your flock and keep them healthy.

Pastured poultry are generally resilient to diseases and infections. The most common health and management challenges are weather and predators. Adequate shelter is vital in most climates to shield your birds from cold, rain, severe wind, and heat. Predator protection, such as portable electric poultry fencing, is also important in most areas. Daily maintenance tasks include checking the birds for health, replenishing their feed and water supply, and cleaning their housing and pen areas. Be sure to keep detailed health records for your birds, including: age, vaccinations, egg production, etc., as this information is helpful in tracking and resolving potential health issues, assessing production costs, and gaining organic certification.

Step 8. Manage your pastures effectively.

Chickens will graze any type of pasture, and while they prefer legumes over grasses, they will eventually consume the entire pasture. As you plan your pastures, begin by utilizing pre-existing pastures, especially if you already keep pastured ruminants. However, if you must replant or create new pasture areas, plant a diverse mix of forages that mature at different times of the year to improve soil quality and provide grazing variety for the birds.

As you choose forages to plant, be certain to consider your site factors (such as soil type, rainfall, etc.) and production plans (such as replanting the area in vegetable crop or using it for other livestock to graze). Joel Salatin, author of Pastured Poultry Profits, grows what he calls a “permanent polyculture” which is a mix of “grasses and clovers, including native grasses, broadleaves, clovers, chicories, oats, and rye”.  Salatin also suggests keeping grass short (a few inches) because it helps the birds to ingest more food.

Fencing is another significant and beneficial component of your poultry pasture.  Though fencing is not essential, it offers protection from most predators (except avian predators such as hawks), while enabling the birds to access adequate range space. Fencing also helps you better manage and/or rotate areas where the flock grazes. Portable poultry fencing, also called “poultry netting”, is a reasonable investment. Most small scale producers use only a few 165 foot rolls of poultry netting and one battery charger to pasture an entire flock. Andy Lee offers helpful advice on working with poultry netting in his book Day Range Poultry.

business plan for 1000 layers

Birds raised outdoors on pasture (especially free range) are susceptible to attacks from predators such as foxes, raccoons, coyotes, skunks, weasels, hawks and dogs. Once you have identified the predators most prevalent in your area, poultry producer Brian Moyer offers the following suggestion to prevent losses:

  • Place the birds’ pens and housing well inside existing pastures, rather than along wooded fence lines, because predators are reluctant to travel across open fields.
  • Install electric fencing whenever possible.
  • Play music day and night to ward off some predators such as hawks.
  • Check on your birds frequently.

spring creek chickens

Step 9. Plan for economic and environmental sustainability.

Before, during, and after you’ve designed and established your poultry operation, you must regularly evaluate its ecological and economical sustainability.  Recycling resources within your farm is the key to both; it reduces the number of inputs that must be purchased from off the farm and replaces many of the resources that are lost through off-farm exports.

For example, some or all of your chickens’ water requirements can be met by an on-site rain water catchment system, and their grain feed needs can be met with a minimal investment of land. Approximately 3 acres is required to grow feed for about 1000 broilers per year, and as Andy Lee notes, the manure from that number of birds is sufficient to fertilize the land to grow their feed. If feed is grown on the farm and manure is recycled as fertilizer for the feed crops (via pasture and composting), it is then easy to replace the nitrogen exported off the farm via eggs and meat by growing leguminous cover crops and forage. Recent research determined that 0.02 acres of alfalfa can replace the nitrogen lost from 19 layers and 20 3.5 lb. broilers per year, which multiplies to about one acre of alfalfa for 1000 layers and broilers.

Clearly, poultry can enhance and benefit the farm, but is small scale poultry farming economically viable?  Producers Joel Salatin and Andy Lee agree that pastured poultry farming is easy to start on a small scale, with little initial capital investment, and often provides a quick return on investment. As with all farming endeavors, preliminary market research is the key to success:  you’ll only make money if the market is there! Diversity is also vital. Pastured poultry is an excellent, low cost way to diversify your farm and increase your income.

One of the greatest advantages of raising poultry is that, once a management routine is established, time and labor requirements can be flexible. Some poultry producers start out with some other off-farm income and then gradually grow into a full-time farming enterprise. Joel Salatin, for example, has perfected raising poultry for profit. According to Salatin, raising poultry on pasture, even for part of the year, can be lucrative. Salatin raises 10,000 birds on 20 acres during a six-month season and nets $25,000. If you want to raise poultry with the goal of a full time income, like Salatin, you will probably need to raise thousands of broilers and layers. However, with a well-designed, ecologically sound operation, either a few hundred or a few thousand birds can improve your income and operational diversity with a minimal outlay of money and time.

Thanks for the information, Really useful to know about all these poultry equipments in a single place. Also shared with my colleagues

Wow! This is very detailed. I will read it more thoroughly soon. What I am curious about is if there is any way to raise chickens that meet my dietary needs. For pain management, I do a very restrictive elimination diet, a more severe form of the Paleo diet, and do not eat any grains, legumes, sugars, dairy and many nightshade vegetables. Is chicken feed ever not grain or legume based? Corn and soy are particularly painful for me. Is feed ever made from carrots, zuccs, greens, and even almonds? Or, is that back to that they do not process cellulose thoroughly? Is there any supplement that could be given to them, along with pasture feeding, that would make their eggs and meat tolerable for me? I am not thinking I want to learn to hunt birds. I am not quite at complete farm to table ownership of what I consume. Thank you!

This article is not detailed enough in terms of discussing how, where, and cost of slaughter. To sell poultry products off farm, unless you’re just selling a few eggs from your home, requires USDA and state involvement, and that’s not simple or inexpensive. Is there a USDA-approved mobile slaughter unit near you? Do they have any availability (you have to schedule way in advance). Do you have a USDA-approved egg candling and processing facility? The author of this article skipped over a HUGE part of small-farm poultry production, making it all sound like a simple dream. There’s a lot more to it.

Layer Poultry Housing

  • Pinterest 26

A good layer poultry housing system keeps the bird safe, healthy and productive. Generally the poultry birds which are popular and raised for egg production are simply known as layer poultry.

They become very highly egg productive. But to get better egg production from them, they need proper care and management.

Food and housing are two main factor of successful poultry farming business . Housing is also very important for raising layer poultry commercially and in small scale.

Table of Contents

Layer Poultry Housing System

A good poultry house protects the poultry birds from adverse weather condition, injury and predators. Poultry birds require a draft free and dry house.

Proper ventilation system and temperature management is needed. And for proper ventilation, you can keep big sized windows or doors, which can be opened when necessary.

You can raise layer poultry in both deep litter and cage system. Deep litter poultry farming system is usually used for free range or organic poultry farming systems.

But cage system is suitable for commercial production purpose. In cage system, poultry producers used to keep thousands of birds under a single shed.

If you want to raise your birds in cage system, then build a large house compared to the length, wide and height of broiler house.

Use dropped ceiling system. This will improve ventilation and reduce heating costs. Layer house needs to be slightly higher than the broiler house.

Dropped ceilings also allow the installation of ceiling insulation to reduce heat gain during hot weather/seasons and heat loss during cold climates/weather.

Adequate temperature management system is also a very important factor for layer poultry housing. Poultry birds are very sensitive to temperature.

Use proper cooling and heating system inside the house. Be very careful about temperature management while raising layer chicks. Because your chicks may die due to sudden temperature change. Good ventilation system delivers fresh air inside the house, and removes excess heat, moisture and undesirable gases from the house.

For making a proper ventilation system, you will require fans, evaporative cooling system, air inlets and controller.

Ventilation systems are of two types. Cold weather ventilation system and hot weather ventilation system.

For cold weather ventilation system, you will need fans, air inlets etc. to keep your birds and the layer poultry housing environment hot. And for hot weather ventilation system, you can use tunnel ventilation system.

Lighting play a very important role for the layer poultry birds. They require a certain lighting period for laying maximum number of eggs.

Usually layer poultry birds require about 16 hours of lighting and 8 hours of darkness period for maximum egg production. Ensure presence of 16 hours of lighting period depending on your location and weather condition.

Before building house for layer poultry farming business, try to keep in mind the following aspect.

  • Build the poultry house in a quit and calm place.
  • It should be located in well drained areas, which will help to prevent prolonged dampness, water saturation of the floor of house and outside runs.
  • It will be better, if the front side, windows and outside runs faced to south. This method allows the sun to warm and dry the house and soil.
  • Provide sufficient space required per bird which helps to minimize the humidity level in the house.
  • Make a fence around the poultry house to prevent the bird from predators.

Layer Chicken Farming Business Plan: Step-by-Step to Start, Setup Cost, Requirements, and Profit

Layer chicken farming is a highly profitable business that involves raising chickens for their eggs. The eggs are sold to different market outlets, including supermarkets, food processors, hotels, and households. This business can be carried out on a small or large scale, and with the right planning and execution, it can bring in substantial profits. Below we will discuss the layer chicken farming business plan and the investments and profits involved in the layer poultry farm business.

Layer Chicken Farming Business Plan

Layer Chicken Farming Business Plan

A step-by-step guide to starting a layer chicken farm business, conduct market research.

The first step in starting a layer chicken farming business is conducting market research. This involves determining the demand for eggs in your area and the target market. You should also research the different types of eggs in demand and the prices they are being sold for. This information will help you determine the number of chickens you need to rear and the size of the farm you need to build.

Choose a Suitable Location

The location you choose for your layer chicken farm will impact the success of your business. The farm should be located in an area that is easily accessible, has a reliable water and power source, and is far from residential areas to minimize the chances of complaints about noise or smell.

Building the Farm

The next step is building the farm. You can either build a free-range or a cage-free system. A free-range system will initially require a larger piece of land and more investment, but it will result in a more profitable business in the long run. A cage-free system, on the other hand, is more convenient and requires less investment.

Obtaining the Right Equipment

Once you have built the farm, you must obtain the right equipment. This includes feeders, drinkers, lights, heating, and cooling systems, ventilation systems, and cages. What chicken-raising tools you require will depend on the size of your farm and how many birds you want to breed.

Sourcing the Right Chickens

The next step is sourcing the right chickens. You can purchase day-old chicks from a hatchery or a local farmer. The type of chicken you purchase will depend on the demand for eggs in your area. The most popular breeds for layer chickens include Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, and Sussex.

Feeding and Maintenance

Layer chickens require a balanced diet to ensure their health and to produce high-quality eggs. You should purchase high-quality feed from a reputable supplier. You should also ensure that the chickens have access to clean water. Regular cleaning of the farm is also important to ensure the chickens’ health and to prevent disease.

Vaccination

The result is a hen that is more resistant to disease. This aids in preventing the spread of disease and prolonging their lives. However, it’s important to remember that sick hens shouldn’t be vaccinated (keep sick birds isolated) and to disinfect the vaccination equipment with hot, boiling water or an antiseptic/germicide before each vaccination. To prevent disease in layer hens, these vaccinations can be administered.

It’s important to highlight that a sick hen doesn’t need to be vaccinated (keep sick birds isolated) and to disinfect the vaccination equipment with hot, boiling water or an antiseptic/germicide before using it. To prevent disease in layer hens, these vaccinations can be administered. In addition to Marex, Gamboro, and Salmonella, there are many more vaccines.

Marketing and Sales

Sales and marketing are fundamental to the success of any business. You should create a marketing plan to advertise your eggs in local supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels. You can also create a website to promote your business and sell your eggs online. You can also participate in local farmers’ markets to increase visibility and generate more sales.

Layer farming project report

What is layer farming.

Layer farming is a method of producing chicken eggs by farming which is used as a business on a very large scale to fulfill the demand of people.

This kind of business has a very large investment which is included with housing for chickens, layer platforms, feeding, water, electricity, anti-fungal infection medicine.

Layer farming investment for 10,000 birds

Investment for 1st year, in one-time investment, fundamental priorities are  housing (for 70x70 =4900 square meters)- 1000000 inr layerwise platforms - 1000000 inr chicken cost - 50000 inr electricity connection  - 25000 inr water pipe system - 800000 inr.

Regular investment  Per year

chicken feed for 10000 birds 400000 INR/month  3000000 INR/year Antifungal medicines and regular checkups  - 100000 INR/year water consumption  - 80000 INR/year Electricity bill- 6000/month 72000/year

Components of egg.

Eggs have two fundamental elements; Eggs white and Egg yolk. Egg white is total protein and egg yolk is mostly fat and less in protein.

It contains copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, and calcium.

Layer poultry farm

10000 birds Layer Poultry Farming project business plan

Requirements to start layer farming business, housing and layer platforms designing.

One of the most important factors that decide your age in the animal farming business is the housing shelter.

If your housing of hens is not satisfactory then, it is not going to be a perfect business model.

You must understand that Housing depends on your number of chickens(a hen). For 10000 chickens a total 70x70 (4900 to 5000 ) square meter area is required.

The ordinary model is to make a layerwise Platform for 100 chickens in set which has 5 base layers and each layer have space for 0 chickens each.

Every single platform should have a rectangular or square cage. This cage system is designed in a way that when chickens produce eggs the egg slide through and ready to collect in the cage bottom.

Meanwhile, for 10000 chickens, you need 100 sets of 20x5(100 chickens) this with proper gallery spacing.

Farmhouse should have proper air windows and exhaust for chickens.

Feeding and water

Chicken feed must full of protein, minerals, and proper fat according to their diet. An ordinary chicken eats at least 100 gm to 150 grams of chicken feed.

Chicken feed can be made of cereals and grains at home or you can buy it directly from the market.

Fully grown hens consume at least 50ml of freshwater daily, so you have to make sure that you must provide them fresh and clean water.

Anti fungal medicines and cure

Hens are one of those birds who live on the ground. This causes them to get in range of fungus and other bacterial infections.

In a poultry farm, where water is used to cooling their shelter, it is possible that they can live in a wet surface and environment. It can be a possible reason for them to get infected.

So a poultry farm always requires a regular checkup to get rid out of fungus and other bacterial infections.

That means, if it seems that chicken feet are getting any kind of green or yellow fungus, then you have to check them up on the veterinary surgeon.

Electricity

The main concept of the electricity connection is providing chickens light and heat. In summer chickens don't need any kind of electric fans to expect you to have to make the housing cold and friendly for chickens.

But in winters, you need to provide the proper heat and lighting for better growth and atmosphere.

Trays for collecting the eggs

After these mentioned steps, you will need to buy the trays for the collection of eggs. One tray of eggs contains a maximum of 150 eggs. So buy it as much as you need.

Poultry Business: How To Earn Millions From Layers

business plan for 1000 layers

Agribusiness has been touted as a sector that will produce the next generation of billionaires across the world given the increasing global population amidst fixed land and climate change menace.

In Uganda, a number of people are increasingly taking on commercial farming. However, some have jumped on this lucrative business out of bandwagon and sheer excitement driven from some exaggerated success stories. This has seen them lose their hard-earned money and abandon farming business.

It is therefore advisable for a new commercial farmer to carryout extensive research before zeroing on which agribusiness enterprise to invest in.

Poultry farming is one profitable enterprise that excited new farmers have made losses from.

However, those who have made research are making a killing from rearing chickens either for meat or eggs. For example, while you can earn as high as Shs17m and above net profit from 500 chicken layers, you can also earn less or make losses depending on how informed you’re about this enterprise.

In this article, we are going to focus on layers/eggs production. Are layers worth it? Can you make money from layers? How do you minimize expenditure and maximize profit?

Godfrey Kigoye, a Senior Trainer at Namugongo based Katende Harambe Rural & Urban Training Centre will analyze for us the business of keeping layers. He has been in this business for close to 20 years now. We are going to use a stock of 500 exotic birds.

Kigoye says a poultry farmer should ensure that the money to feed the 500 birds to the point when they start laying eggs is readily available.

“This is because when layers don’t eat for a day or eats less, egg production falls sharply. Others stop laying and it takes them time to recover from the stress,” Kigoye said in an interview with Business Focus .

One day old chicks (exotic) will cost about Shs1.8m considering that each goes for Shs3700 at current market prices.

Housing

Housing should be 15ft width and 45ft length; height doesn’t matter much.  According to Kigoye, this can cost about Shs5m when one uses local materials like timber, chain link, iron sheets and a few bricks,

This can be deep litre system (you need coffee husks for this system) or cage system (you can have more chickens in the cage system). Coffee husks will cost about Shs200,000.

business plan for 1000 layers

For cage system, you can have four cages each carrying 120 chickens.

After the poultry house, you need to buy water and feed troughs. You need 20 feeders and 20 drinkers for 500 birds. These will cost about Shs200,000.

Preparation of the brooder

Kigoye says site selection for the brooder is vital.

He advises farmers to disinfect the area and its surroundings, then apply saw dust and place brooding papers on top before introducing in the chicks.

“Curve all the corners. A good brooder should be in an oval form,” Kigoye says, adding that space for ventilation should be provided.

“Disinfect again and warm or heat the brooder, then bring in the chicks,” he advises.

He says they should be given water first before feeds.

“Some lose chicks on day one because they start with giving them feeds instead of water. Give them feeds 30 minutes after them taking water,” he says, noting that water has vitamins.

Kigoye says from day one up to the point the 500 birds are sold off as layers, they will have eaten a total of 30,600 kilograms of feeds. He emphasizes that it is cheaper to formulate/mix feeds at the farm than buying already made ones from the market. For example, when formulated at the farm, a kilogram currently costs Shs600 and when bought it will cost Shs900.

business plan for 1000 layers

This means when feeds are formulated at the farm, it will cost Shs18.36m.

When they are bought from the market, it will cost a farmer Shs27.54m.

It is worth noting that at 0-6 weeks, chicks are given chick mash while at 6-22 weeks, they are given Growers mash. At 22 and above, they are given layers mash.

Kigoye encourages farmers to learn how to mix their own feeds in order to cut on unnecessary expenditure.

Vaccination

Kigoye says on day one, chicks are vaccinated against malex. At seven days, they are vaccinated against Newcastle Disease (NCD). At 10 days, they are again given malex vaccine. At 14 days, they are vaccinated against Gomboro while at 21, they are given IBR vaccine.

At 30 days, they are vaccinated against Gomboro and NCD.

At 45 days, they are again given Gomboro vaccine while at 60 days, they are given Foul Typhoid vaccine. At 75 days, it is Foul pox and at 120 days it is NCD and IBR.

After this, farmers are advised to repeat New Castle Disease Vaccination every two to three months. Vaccination will cost about Shs300,000 while workers will cost you about Shs2.16m.

Diseases Control & Management

In poultry just like in livestock, bio-security is key in managing diseases. Bio-security is the management of diseases and pests on the farm.

“One should have water bath points at the entrance of a poultry house. The water should be mixed with a disinfectant,” Kigoye advises, adding that workers should wear overalls and gumboots at all times.

Besides vaccinations, a farmer should have a first aid kit consisting of antibiotics, de-wormers among other medicines to help on emergency situations before calling a Vet doctor.

When it comes to management, extra care should be given to your birds. Eggs should be collected 3-4 times a day not only to avoid breakages and them being eaten by the birds.

A farmer is also advised to carry out a de-breaking exercise when chicks are three months old to avoid pecking.

“It is also a good practice to change litre two times in a year. Coffee husks should be 3 inches deep,” he says adding that they should be turned whenever they get wet.

It is also advisable to provide enough feeds and water in the troughs.

“To avoid wastage of feeds, put one third of feeds in the troughs. If you fill it, some feeds will fall off,” he says.

A farmer is also advised to have a sickroom or an isolation room where sick birds are taken.

“Birds of the same size should be kept together; isolate and put small birds together to avoid competition for food,” Kigoye says.

business plan for 1000 layers

Record Keeping

Any person in commercial layer business should record every coin spent.

“Record tools and equipment you use on the farm. Also record working capital; when you buy feeds and pay for water and electricity bills, record everything,” he says.

When birds die, record the number and possible reasons why they died. Under good management, Mortality rate is normally recorded at more than 6%.

It also important to record the eggs collected per day.

According to Kigoye, at 6-7 months, birds will have reached egg production peak. Under good management practices, a farmer is expected to collect 390-400 eggs per day.

This translates to about 13 trays per day. It is worth noting that birds can lay eggs for a period of one and a half years under good care. This means that in a year, a farmer will get 4,745 trays (13 trays x365 days).

From one and a half years, a farmer is advised to start selling the off layers because egg production starts to fall. This can go on up to two years.

“At one and a half years, start identifying non laying chickens and sell them for they will be eating without giving you eggs,” he says.

Kigoye says market for eggs is readily available. Locally, eggs can be sold to wholesale buyers in Owino (St. Balikuddembe market), Kafumbe-Mukasa Road, Kisenyi, Nakawa and Nakasero markets. Schools, hospitals and supermarkets can also offer market to poultry farmers.

“The immediate market for a farmer is the farmer himself and the neighbourhood,” Kigoye says.

Regionally, market is available in Nairobi (Kenya), Kigali (Rwanda) and Juba (South Sudan).

Making Business Sense Of Layers

Currently, a tray of eggs ranges between Shs8,000-9,000. Taking Shs8,000, a farmer will earn a gross profit of Shs37.96m from the 4,745 trays of eggs.

Additionally,  a farmer will earn a gross profit of Shs6.75m from selling 450 off layers at an average of Shs15,000 each (they can even be sold at Shs20,000 each).

Kigoye says a farmer can also earn about Shs600,000 from selling poultry litre that is used as manure.

This means that a farmer will earn an average of Shs45.31m from eggs, off layers and poultry litre.

According to Kigoye, for a period of two years, a farmer will invest in the 500 birds about Shs28.82m including Shs800,000 allocated to  miscellaneous expenditure.

This means that a farmer can earn as high as Shs16.49m net profit from the 500 birds for the period of two years (Shs45.31-Shs28.82m). This is when feeds are formulated at the farm.

Kigoye says the profit margin increases in the next restocking because the infrastructure (house) as well as tools and equipment remain unchanged. This means expenditure reduces, thus increasing profit margins.

“For new farmers, the experience gained in the first stock is priceless,” he says, advising farmers to start small and grow big regardless of the capital they have.

Owning a commercial egg production that raises egg-laying poultry birds is a lucrative and exciting business venture here in the UK, but how do you aim to run it without a working business plan? Layer poultry farming businesses in the UK are now one of the most popular types of farming people mostly venture into. Hence, to survive in this fierce competition, you need a plan to bring your ideas to life. In this guide, we have carefully constructed a template, which can also be accessed as a PDF, to help you create a professional layer poultry farming business plan.

Aside from this, we have also provided some basic information you might need to know about layer poultry farming. In any case, you don’t feel the need to create this business plan yourself, you can just grab a copy of our ready-made layer poultry farming business plan here .

A layer poultry farming business plan is a living document that outlines the entire description of a company; its mission, ideas, marketing and financial plans, among others. A layer poultry farming business plan also serves as a road map that naturally tells you where you are going with your business.

With the presence of a business plan in your layer poultry farming business, you will be able to keep track of your growth and know when to apply changes. Having known this, using the template below, which can also be accessed as a PDF file , let’s carefully examine how you can create your layer poultry farming business plan with ease.

How to Write a Layer Poultry Farming Business Plan

Writing a business plan is a straightforward process, although a lot of business owners find it hard to manoeuvre, especially when it’s their first time trying. But with the help of this unique template, which can also be accessed in doc format, you will be able to construct a professional layer poultry farming business plan with zero stress. Let’s look at some sections you need to observe when writing.

This is the first section of your business plan, and in your executive summary , you are meant to give a brief summary of your business plan and what it encompasses. In essence, you are needed to cover the company’s product, niche, mission statement, leadership, operations, location, and financial projections among others. It should be a summary of your whole business plan in case the reader did not read all the other sections. While doing this, you should also make it clear and concise.

Just like the name implies, a company description should cover an in-depth history of your business and how you started the journey. It should also tell your readers what you aim to achieve in the long run.

Before you even get to writing this section of your business plan, you need to carry out proper market research to have a clear knowledge of the layer poultry farming industry, determine your target audience, and take note of any market trends. You will also get to research your competitors and who their audience is. From this information, you will convince your readers how vast your knowledge of the industry is and how you plan to keep your business unique from others.

Here, you will need to specify which products and services to offer. What type of egg-laying poultry do you breed? What are their species? Ensure that this section defines what you do. You can also include your pricing options, consumer benefits, and profit margins. You can educate your readers on how you buy poultry birds and then how they eventually produce eggs.

Your marketing and sales strategies section will cover how you intend on making your brand known to potential customers and then how you will manage sales and delivery when your ideal customers buy from you. You should also explain the marketing methods you would use to advertise and reach out to your target audience. Would you be using an online or offline marketing campaign?

If you are seeking financial assistance, then you should pay close attention to this financial plan section of your business plan because it will determine if you will get the aid you require or not. Your readers should be convinced that once you get the assistance you seek, you will pour your ideas into your business and make returns over a specific period of time. You need to convince them that you will be able to pay back the loan. Mention a 5-year funding requirement and a solid budget.

Your appendix is where you will provide any supporting documents that will validate some of the information you provided in the plan. It can be a licence, a resume, legal paperwork, permits or references.

Layer poultry farming is a lucrative business that anyone can invest in and yield massive profits. Most people that are interested in poultry farming go into layer poultry farming. An average poultry farm makes an income of over £96,000.

Starting a layer poultry farm is not a hard task to do if you wish to attain success. To effectively start-up you will need to follow the following processes in accordance:

  • Select a layer hen
  • Pick a conducive location
  • Set up capital
  • Get the necessary equipment and tools
  • Buy their feeds and water management
  • Conduct a proper vaccination
  • Set up pricing models
  • Market your brand

Setting up a medium-scale poultry farm in the UK where you can raise birds, store all necessary equipment, keep a hatchery and do many other things will cost you £400,000 to £450,000.

The layer chicken business is quite profitable if, of course, managed well. You need to take special care of the layer birds because only a well-fed and managed bird will produce a healthy egg that will make sales. If you take the time to manage your layer chicken business effectively, you will make great returns.

A layer bird can cover a floor space of 1.7 sq ft. If you are dealing with 1000-layer chickens, then you should make a space of 1700 sq ft. To be on the safe side, you need to budget over 6000 sq ft for 10000 layers.

The most profitable poultry still remains the Layers farming. Broiler farming is another profitable poultry, but layer farming brings most of the revenue from selling the eggs in a short period of time. Even when selling the eggs is off the table, you can still sell the birds as meat.

It takes a normal chicken up to 24-26 hours to process one egg, so each egg-laying chicken lays up to one egg per day at its peak. You can use this calculation to know the amount of egg to expect from your poultry bird under a given period.

Setting up your own poultry farm is not much of a big deal. You just need to know the right processes that are involved and then follow them up accordingly. For a start, if you have no background knowledge of how poultry farming works, then you should learn it. When you have gotten enough experience, you can then start setting up your poultry.

Choose a poultry niche, select the type of bird you will use, create a farm logo, have a business plan, choose a location and get your poultry farm on the go.

Most people won’t tell you this, but creating a business plan can be fun and daunting at the same time, especially when it’s your first time trying.

But because time waits for no man, you have to take the easier route out, and for this reason, we have created a ready-made Layer Poultry Farming business plan for your convenience.

Over the years, businessyield consult has specialised in creating professional business plans and, so far, has helped millions of businesses stand on their feet, and we are happy to help you too. Get started here .

Handling a company with the aid of a business plan can help you track and manage that firm till growth is attained. The power of a business plan is not yet understood by most business owners because they have yet to experience its mind-blowing returns. However, remember that your plan has to be well-constructed to experience this change. For this reason, you can use the template above, which can also be accessed in a doc format, to construct a layer poultry farming business plan for yourself or perhaps reach out for our help here . Don’t forget to occasionally edit and make changes to your plan.

Managing your chicken’s diet can enhance egg production in them. If you want that, then you should feed them mealworms, eggs and eggshells, watermelon and fruits, greens, Japanese beetles, sunflower seeds, smashed corn, and a host of others.

A laying egg will need up to roughly ¼ to ⅓ of a pound of feed every day. That is to say, you can keep an estimate of 1.5 pounds of feed per week if you wish to feed them well.

If you get a day-old layer chicken to raise, then you will need to wait about 30 weeks of age before they start egg production. Their first eggs won’t measure up to a normal-sized egg. But as time goes on, they will increase. As your laying bird ages, the egg count and size will eventually fall.

This is a very good project. Do you know a firms which can provide me all materials or accessories for this project. I’m leaving in Germany but I need to extend my farming in a layer farming. I want to build a 10000 or 15000 layer farming.

Thank you for help and best regards

Well, there are many poultry set up consultancies. You can find many on indiamart dot come.

I thank you very much for farming project reports provided on this blog. I request you to kindly approve my project report and get it sanctioned from nabard as I am waiting for various projects for the last two years. I can also meet you personally for various reports.

The project applications should be met with all kinds of technical requirements to get it approved from NABARD. Your Local NABARD branch is right place of contact. We can’t help with your application process.

Hi, Can you please guide us how to make registration in the government for self finance Egg Layer farm. Is it required register as Private Limited Company or at District Industry Office registration is enough.

Your best point of contact is Poultry department of any Agriculture Institute.

Hi, I am looking to set up this farm in Mysore.I have a question in the report you have mentioned the selling price of egg as 1.08/egg but the actually selling price is above 3rs/egg right as my friend is doing the same business in UP and people take the egg from his farm paying rupee 4/egg.Please revert back.

Well, the report is old one and mentioned accordingly. But you should convert accordngly as per current trend.

Hi Sir, This is a very good project report and I want to start layer farming of 6000 NO.s. Please guide me what is the risk factor in it and can we get loans for this if yes then what is the procedure and how to get resources on it.

Well, You must have a time and dedication to be successful in layer poultry farming. Don not trust third part peeple to manage your farm. Unless you can able to dedicate your time and hardwork..It is not advisable.

Your Project is excellent, however, the problem is that it seems you do not want someone to use your project. Prove me wrong if you are not individualist and you do not want to share information for purpose development. I read a lot of your articles which I want to use in assisting me in setting up an agricultural project, I could not make a copy of your article.

The problem is people are making duplicate content.Hence downloads/printings are restricted

If i completely move out of this and start a 15,000 poultry (exactly 15k capacity)farm would it be profitable business? i mean would i get 1 lakh income per month an average (not exactly but average income per month)? like agriculture i understand poultry is also subjected to nature conditions but f we do hard work with dedication with regular monitering..what would be the average monthly income?

Well, poultry is risky business.if you get sucees in layers, you can make good money when compared to a software professional. Start with small numbers where risk can be mitigated.Once you know in and outs of the layer poultry business..you can slowly increase the bird count. I never suggest to leave your fulltime job and get into that.

Hi….this is Sanjay from Kolkata.I want to set up layer poultry business in and around Kolkata. What would be the minimum land requirements for 100000 chicks to start with. Would it be possible for you to make a short project report for the same. Which I need to submit to my financer to get the finance. Would it be possible to earn net Rs 5 lacs per month as we have 3-4 partners to do the business. Kindly help…

I HAVE read every bit of the report thoroughly have noticed 2 things 1, with 4% mortality in every phase finale production of eggs should multiplied with around 8800 birds instead of 10000. 2, the rate of sale of egg in pakistani market is around 7 to 9 per egg wholesale. overall report is very brief and satisfactoy . grest work keep it up. pls upload 5000 ree range egg laying hen report if posible. with 50% consumption of commercial feed

Hi Jagdish, we are interested in knowing the details of layer farming for 1L birds. Can you kindly guide me regarding some consultant who can advise the step by step procedure

Hello sir, myself Mohan. Iam interested in layer poultry forming. At first I wish to start up in small count of bird ( in order to know the in and out ) . Could you please give me a step by step procedure to start it….

Hi a Jagdish. Fantastic job and very useful as well as helpful. All I want to know is about the age of your project report, I mean how old is it, so that I can change the financial variables accordingly. Thanks.

I’m interested in the poultry business

This is a good project I need the call back from your side I want to invest

Sir is there any govt subsidy for this?

Yes sir there is a PMEGP subsidy scheme available.

whats the feed cost now, year 2020 ? chick mash / kg , grower mash/kg , layer mash/kg , as feed price is very important factor that governs profit .

How to start a Layers egg business in Zimbabwe and the business plan

How to start a Layers egg business in Zimbabwe and the business plan

This article will explain how to start a layers egg farming business in Zimbabwe, and the business plan. Before you start an egg laying business, you have to decide how many layers you want to keep, where you are going keep them, and your target market. The number of birds you keep will depend on the amount of land and capital you have, and also the size of your target market. You should always carry out a feasibility study, market research and write a business plan before you venture into any business. Do not make the mistake of starting a layers chicken egg farming business or any other business just because someone is doing it and he/she says it’s profitable.

What you need

Land, Housing and Equipment

This is a very important factor to consider. It will determine whether you succeed or not in the layer business.  The kind of housing you need and the size of the land will depend on the size of your layer project. An ideal poultry farm should be sited where there’s a large availability of cheap land and at the same time should be close to your market. Chicken layers cannot adjust well to temperature extremes, so it is very important that chickens be housed, cared and provided with an environment that will enable them to maintain their thermal balance. The right housing should have proper ventilation and the right lighting. Ventilation is necessary so that adequate air exchange can take place. Lighting stimulates hens to lay eggs. If you want to produce eggs year-round, you will need to install adequate lighting in your facility.

Layers need a certain minimum space and convenient place to grow well, otherwise if the space is not enough they may suffocate to death, which will be a great loss to your business. You should allow at least 0.15 square metres per bird, which may be covered with clean straw, wood shavings, or sawdust. Your housing can be barns, layer cages, chicken runs or hutches. The cost of construction depends on the size. You should have equipment including feeders, drinkers, lighting system and waste disposal system. You will also need chicken layer nests for the layers to lay eggs. If you purchase layer cages as housing for your layers, the layer cages will already have the laying nests, feeders etc.

Point of lay chickens/Layer chicks

Chicken Layers start to lay eggs at about 19 weeks of age. You can buy layer chicks and feed them till they are 19 weeks, or the more popular option of buying them when they are at the point of lay i.e. at 19 weeks of age. It is very important to buy high quality point of layer chicks, which are vaccinated; otherwise your layers will have a low rate of egg production and a high mortality rate.  It is recommended to buy layers from well established companies like Novatek and Irvines.

Layer feeds

It is very important to give the layers the right feeds, and the right quantities, so that they grow well and have a high egg production rate. The type of feeds you choose will determine the success of your business. It is recommended to use the feeds which are sold by the company where you bought the point of lay chickens from. You will have to feed the birds according to the specific instructions on the packet of the feed. The type of feed also depends on the housing, season and age of the layers.

Management and Labour

The number of staff you will need depends on the size of your poultry project.  If you are keeping 50 birds at the back of your house you may not need an employee as you and your family will take care of the birds. On the other hand, if you have a poultry farm you will need dedicated staff to look after the birds, and to manage the business. You need good management skills and technical knowledge of layer rearing techniques if you want to be profitable. Do your research, and train those who are working for you.

The amount of capital you need will depend on the scale of your project, location of your farm, and the type of management technology you are using. A small scale being production being run behind your house will require less money than a medium to high scale layers business.

Before you start the egg laying business, you should define the market you are targeting. For small scale production, you can sell to those in your neighborhood, by simply putting a “Eggs for Sale” sign at your gate. For medium to large scale production you can supply to supermarkets, tuckshops, schools, vendors etc. If you have good networking skills it will be very easy for you to market your eggs.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Godiya poultry farm is a farm focused on both egg and meat production that provides for a large market range. It also produces manure as a by-product. It is based in Kaduna, Kaduna State.

The founders have noticed the health implication of red meat and are creating a business to meet the increased demand for white meat and eggs. Chickens happen to be a great source of white meat and are also largely known for egg production.

Not only that we are interested in meeting the demands of the customer, we also plan to create utmost satisfaction for these customers. We also want to use this business as a means of creating employment within the community it is based in and to contribute to the economy of the country.

We plan on provide products with quality and maintain this supply efficiently. This is a partnership business that plans on distributing eggs, chicken, cat fish to restaurants, home delivery food centers, hotels, schools, clubs, bakery and catering businesses and supermarkets.

We also plan on doing this at very affordable prices. We will also distribute manure to farmers that are into crop production.

This business plan is meant to articulate the vision and future of our farm, and to appeal to investors and external stakeholders to get involved in this business and help with its funding as it is a capital intensive business. We also hope that it will serve as a guideline for the firm’s employees to move towards the goal of the farm.

Not only do we offer products, but we offer services as well. We plan on providing home delivery services to customers who order a certain amount of products.

This offer will mostly be used by the section of our target market that uses eggs, chickens or fish in large quantities like schools and bakeries.

500 chickens would be optimum for the initial operation of the business. Production site is in Kaduna, plenty open space, cheap labors, road connection, water availability and immediate access to markets.

Revenue for this will be gotten from personal saving, loan and grants. Investment in this business shall be allocated to the following purposes: Acquiring land, constructing fish ponds, buying chickens, buying fingerlings, building cage house, stocking the pellets, hiring the experts and other miscellaneous tasks. Fifty percent gross margin is expected within 6 months of its operations withholding the chances of any accidental or unexpected incidence and we hope to obtain the breakeven point within 2 years.

We have considered the risks, financial, health and technology wisely.

A 1000 layers poultry farm in Kenya

Starting a 1000-layer poultry farm in Kenya can be a lucrative business venture, but it requires careful planning and management to be successful. Here are some steps to follow when setting up a 1000-layer poultry farm in Kenya:

  • Conduct market research: It is important to understand the demand for eggs in your area and the competition you will face. Conduct market research to determine the size of the market and the types of eggs that are in demand.
  • Develop a business plan: A business plan will help you define your business goals, identify your target market, and outline the steps you will take to achieve your objectives. It will also help you secure financing if you need it.
  • Obtain necessary licenses and permits: In Kenya, you will need to obtain a business license and a permit to operate a poultry farm. You may also need to register with the Kenya Bureau of Standards if you plan to sell your eggs commercially.
  • Choose a location: Choose a location for your poultry farm that is easily accessible to your target market and has access to electricity, water, and transportation.
  • Build the infrastructure: You will need to build the infrastructure for your poultry farm, including housing for the chickens, feed and water stations, and a processing area. You will also need to consider the layout and design of the farm to ensure the chickens have access to fresh air and sunlight.
  • Purchase equipment: You will need to purchase equipment to feed and water the chickens and collect and store the eggs. This may include feeders, waterers, egg crates, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Source chicks: Determine the type of chicks you will need for your farm and source them from a reliable supplier. You may need to purchase layers, pullets, or point-of-lay hens depending on your business model.
  • Implement a management plan: Develop a management plan to ensure the smooth operation of your poultry farm. This may include a feeding and watering schedule, a cleaning and sanitation plan, and a schedule for collecting and storing eggs.

By following these steps, you can set up a successful 1000-layer poultry farm in Kenya.
