Pre-master's option

Expected duration: 1 year

Tuition and fees: Varies (refer to the pre-master's section in Graduate tuition and fees )

Students with a Bachelor's degree in English, film or theatre, but who lack an honours degree, may apply to enter the pre-master’s program, which is designed to allow students to attain the equivalent of an honours BA in English. An honours BA in English is usually a total of 60 credit hours of English literature courses (two years/ten full courses), including the equivalent of 24 credit hours of literature prior to the twentieth century (four full-year courses), and a course in literary analysis or theory.

The pre-master’s program consists of up to 30 undergraduate credit hours in English (including ENGL 2650) selected from areas not previously covered by the student. Students with a limited background in English may be required to complete more than 30 credit hours; students with a strong background may complete the program with fewer credit hours.

Since every student will have a unique background, each program will be individually established in a conference between the student and the Chair of Graduate English Studies after the student has been accepted into the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Note that completing the English pre-MA year does not guarantee entry into the English MA program. A separate application will be required.

The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Admission decisions are based on the qualifications of the applicant as well as the ability of the Department of English, Theatre, Film & Media and the University of Manitoba to serve the applicant’s intended program of study and area of specialization.

In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies .

Pre-master’s admission requirements

To be considered for the pre-master’s program you must have a minimum of a three-year bachelor’s degree in English literature with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last two full years of university study. Completing the English Pre-MA year does not guarantee entry into the English MA program.  A separate application will be required.

Bachelor of Arts in East Asia Languages and Culture

The East Asian region constitutes one of the most dynamic and intellectually rich regions in the world. The impact of East Asian economic development has been keenly felt in recent decades and the region has a major impact on world affairs. The legacy of East Asian history, religious and social values, literatures, etc., is a major factor in current affairs in the region, and this legacy will continue to shape our global future.

The EALC program is devoted to the study of East Asian cultures. The program introduces students to East Asian cultures and societies through two components: a) the study of East Asian languages (Chinese—Mandarin and Classical, and Japanese), and b) the study of East Asian cultures through a multi-disciplinary approach (Religious Studies, History, Literature, Cinema, Economics, International Development Studies). A unique feature of the program is its focus on the intellectual legacy of East Asian cultures, introduced through the study of texts and ideas in the historical and cultural contexts that shaped them. The rationale for this focus is a belief that just as East Asian economies are having a global impact beyond the East Asian region, intellectual beliefs and cultural habits will challenge hitherto global presuppositions regarding accepted practices and habits of thought.

The EALC program is administered through the Department of Religion & Culture. Graduates who are interested in careers related to East Asia in fields such as education, government, and business benefit greatly from courses in East Asian Languages & Cultures.

Why Creative Writing?

The Power of Storytelling

Humans are natural storytellers; writing is how we discover ourselves, make sense of the world around us, and describe our place and the place of others within it. Each day brings us news of about cultural change, climate crisis, global pandemics, anti-black racism and protests, food insecurity, and so much more. Our professors understand the importance of telling these stories because they know that the written word can save the world, one story at a time.

Writing Starts With You

As you hone the skills needed to become an effective writer, you’ll also discover more about yourself and your personal identity. You will begin to ask questions, such as:

  • What do I care about?
  • Where is my place in the world?
  • Where do I want to go?
  • What is most important to me?

What You Will Learn

Think of every great movie, film, book, or play; they all have one thing in common - they started as an idea or script on a page.

In this program, you will learn how to construct stories, build characters, and create emotional connections with your readers that will leave a lasting impression.

You will complete writing assignments and exercises, short creative pieces, and peer critiques across three writing genres, including fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and creative nonfiction.

You will build upon this by engaging with our creative writing community through initiatives, such as:

  • Gryphons Read - Canadian writers-in-residence
  • Walls to Bridges program - Writing stories alongside inmates at correctional facilities

What You Will Do

As a graduate of this program, you will have strong skills in writing, communication, critical analysis, research, social awareness, empathy and imaginative problem-solving, skills that you can apply successfully in careers like journalism, education, brand management, book publishing, copywriting, reporting, and more.

Students in the Creative Writing program may also be interested in studying English , History , Psychology , Music and Studio Art , other majors .

The residency is funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and the VPL Friends of the Library. Residents are expected to find their own accommodation. A writer’s time is divided 60% for personal writing projects and 40% for library programming and projects. The writer-in-residence mentors emerging writers, facilitates writing workshops, and plans engaging events featuring their work and the work of other authors.

Creative Writing alum Gwen Lewis featured in Penn Arts & Sciences at Work

A professional photograph of Gwen Lewis smiling and holding a folder in the offices of the New York Times.

Creative Writing alum Gwen Lewis (C'14) is featured in Penn Arts & Sciences at Work, a photoblog project highlighting the diverse career paths of Penn alumni.

Lewis is the senior product manager for the story team at The New York Times . She talks about how the unique opportunities made possible by the Creative Writing Program and the  Kelly Writers House prepared her for a career at the intersection of journalism and tech:

"At Penn I was an English major. I worked at the Kelly Writers House. I took a bunch of classes in the Kelly Writers House and was taught by amazing professors. The conversations that we had around writing and reading in my classes, and the writing that I did myself—they helped me to officially see myself as a writer. Friends who went to other colleges didn’t get to do the types of projects that I got to do at Penn. They didn’t get to meet the types of writers and people who I got to meet. It provided me with actual skills that make me confident in the caliber of my writing.

I know people don’t encourage majors like English now—it wasn’t too different when I went to college—but at a school like Penn, you absolutely have to study what you care about and what makes you happy."

The 2023-2024 UNMC College of Nursing Creative Writing Awards announced winners for this year’s contest. The theme was “Nursing Does That,” encouraging students and alumni to write a story about an experience of how they were changed by caring for an individual who was different than themselves.

This was the first year offering a contest for alumni, who could submit a story on the same theme.

“We received stories from all our five campuses and from all our academic programs,” said Mark Darby, assistant professor in the UNMC College of Nursing and contest chair. “Our alumni were very supportive, providing not only great stories but funds for our awards this year.”

Darby added, “The stories reflect the deep respect and care our students and alumni provide to the citizens of Nebraska. Nurses face difficult clinical situation and still provide high levels of care.”

Published: April 11, 2024

Author: Paul Cunningham

Roy Scranton Headshot

Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing Program Director Dr. Roy Scranton has been named a 2024 Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation , and awarded a grant supporting his forthcoming book Ethical Pessimism: Climate Change and the Limits of Narrative . Now in its 99th year, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation recognizes & awards monetary prizes to the 2024 class of trail-blazing fellows across 52 fields.

“Humanity faces some profound existential challenges,” said Edward Hirsch, award-winning poet and president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. “The Guggenheim Fellowship is a life-changing recognition. It’s a celebrated investment into the lives and careers of distinguished artists, scholars, scientists, writers and other cultural visionaries who are meeting these challenges head-on and generating new possibilities and pathways across the broader culture as they do so.”

In all, 52 scholarly disciplines and artistic fields, 84 academic institutions, 38 US states and the District of Columbia, and four Canadian provinces are represented in the 2024 class, who range in age from 28 to 89. More than 40 Fellows (roughly 1 out of 4) do not hold a full-time affiliation with a college or university. Many Fellows’ projects directly respond to timely issues such as democracy and politics, identity, disability activism, machine learning, incarceration, climate change and community. Since its founding in 1925, the Foundation has awarded over $400 million in fellowships to more than 19,000 fellows.

Dr. Roy Scranton is an essayist, novelist, literary critic, and climate philosopher, best known for his work on war, war literature, and the Anthropocene. He is the author of five books, and has written widely for publications such as the New York Times , Rolling Stone , MIT Technology Review , the Yale Review , and elsewhere. Dr. Scranton grew up in Oregon, dropped out of college, and spent his early twenties wandering the American West. He served four years in the US Army (2002–2006), including fourteen months in Iraq, then completed his bachelor’s degree and earned a master’s degree at the New School for Social Research, before earning a Ph.D. in English at Princeton. His essay “Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene” was selected for the 2015  Best American Science and Nature Writing . He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Energy and Environmental Research in the Human Sciences at Rice University, has been awarded a Whiting Fellowship in the Humanities and a Lannan Literary Fellowship for Fiction, and held the inaugural Teaching Lab Fellowship at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study.

Directing and Playwriting

The best thing about studying directing in a liberal arts institution like the University of Winnipeg is that, to be an excellent director, you must have an extensive knowledge of social and artistic history, strong research skills, and a burning curiosity to explore art forms beyond the theatre.  The breadth of classes at the University of Winnipeg provides student directors with the range of tools and knowledge required to excel in this field.

We find that the students who make the best directors aren’t solely focused on theatre as an art form.  They are often also musicians or dancers or visual artists.  Or they have a passion for film.  And they are avid readers – and writers – of both fiction and non-fiction.  It is in the intersection of these various arts that the directors find their individual voice.

Given the rigours demanded of a director, we don’t offer a general BA in this area.  It is our belief that the full 4-years of a BA Honours is required to provide emerging directors with the skill and knowledge to succeed in this challenging field.

Senior directing students also have an opportunity to take advanced courses in devised theatre, and can get credit for assistant directing our own shows or those with our community partners.

PLAYWRITING

Students specializing in Playwriting enjoy small classes and individual instruction in a number of areas including one-act plays, full-length plays, and screenwriting. Our instructors are all experienced playwrights and screenwriters. Students learn how to construct a play from the initial idea to the final draft, and work collaboratively with their classmates to develop an exciting story complete with all the required elements. Workshopping opportunities are available for senior students. As a result of our close relationship with the university's English Department, students can augment their drama courses with creative writing courses taught by top-notch English professors.

In addition to Playwriting I, Playwriting II: General, and Playwriting II: Honours, we teach an Intro and an Advanced course in Screenwriting and another called Script and Screen, which examines existing screenplays to determine what works and what doesn't. As well, our senior students have an opportunity to work on specialized projects on a one-to-one basis with a Professor who is an experienced playwright.

A number of award-winning playwrights have come through this program including Brian Drader (Artistic Director of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights and long-time coordinator of playwriting at the National Theatre School) and Vern Thiessen (Artistic Director of Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre and Governor General’s award Winner).
