About This Course

Good readers make good writers’ is the ethos of this course. You develop your craft as a writer under the supervision of our world-renowned novelists, poets and playwrights while benefitting from our first-class literature teaching. Your creative and literary training enhance one another. You’re able to draw on the wealth of literature you’ve been reading to inspire your writing, and your understanding of how literature works is deepened by writing it yourself.  The teaching of creative writing in the UK began at UEA more than fifty years ago, and we are still widely seen as the home of creative writing in this country. You will be studying at a university rich in famous creative writing alumni, including Booker Prize winner Ian McEwan and Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro. Whatever kind of writing you love the most, you’ll develop it over the course of your degree by working closely with our many practising writers in seminars and workshops. In your study of English literature, you’ll have the chance to discover a wealth of writers from the ancient classical past right up to poets and novelists writing now. You’ll explore diverse literary traditions from across the globe, and you’ll tackle a heady mix of genres, which currently range from the gothic to children’s literature, crime writing to Latin American fiction, early modern women’s writing to biography. Norwich is an extraordinary place in which to be a writer. It’s England’s first UNESCO City of Literature, awarded in recognition of the city’s vivid literary heritage and vibrant contemporary writing scene, and home to the National Centre for Writing. The writer's world has never been more diverse, exciting, and collaborative than it is today. Whether you're eager to embark on creative and community exchanges, to make your words come alive in the imaginations of new audiences, or to work across literary, visual, and digital media, this is the world you'll want to join.    You'll hone your skills as a writer while exploring literatures from a host of genres, countries, and periods. You will be able to take all the same creative writing workshops (in poetry, prose, and scriptwriting) as our English with Creative Writing students, but you'll also have the chance to take unique modules designed to enable you, once you graduate, to enter the working writer's world. Through a lively mix of seminars, workshops, and writing world experience, you'll develop skills in working across disciplines and media, in community engagement, and in publishing and presenting your own work.

Personal profile

Jacob Huntley is a graduate of the MA in Creative Writing at UEA and received his PhD in 2007. He has written fiction for various magazines, journals and anthologies as well as Radio 4. His critical work principally explores non-mimetic or genre fiction from a Deleuzian perspective and he has also written on JG Ballard, William Hope Hodgson, John Wyndham and the Saw films.

Jacob Huntley is a graduate of the UEA Creative Writing MA and completed his PhD in 2007.  His short stories have been published in a number of journals and broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

Course Overview

Explore the rich tradition of American Literature that gave us Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Gertrude Stein, William Faulkner and Toni Morrison while also developing your own distinctive voice. 

You’ll develop your creative practice, knowledge of American literature, and your industry links in the department of American Studies while taking additional modules in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing, whose internationally esteemed alumni include Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro. You’ll also have the chance to see award-winning American authors, such as Michael Chabon and Jesmyn Ward, in conversation with staff at UEA’s lively and long-established writers’ festival.   

You’ll be studying in Norwich, an ideal location for this course, with its vibrant contemporary writing scene and status as a UNESCO City of Literature . You’ll also have the advantage of spending a year studying abroad, deepening your understanding of American literature, and immersing yourself in the culture of another country. 

All of this experience will enrich your final year, during which you’ll take a series of advanced classes and write a dissertation on a topic of your choice, guided by a supervisor. You also have the option of writing a creative dissertation, combining research and creative practice. 

You’ll be introduced to the demands and challenges of literary creative practice. Studying creative writing and the creative industries alongside American literature will enable you to develop both your creative and your critical abilities. 

You’ll have access to UEA’s close and active links with the world of contemporary writing and publishing — a legacy of the university’s long running and highly respected courses in the writing of fiction, poetry and drama. You’ll also learn about writing for the creative industries through practice-based modules and workshops covering topics such as the history and practice of American journalism and scriptwriting for the American stage and screen. 

Whatever path you choose through your studies, this degree will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how American literature has shaped the world around us. You will learn about the relationship between culture and politics, while gaining an in-depth knowledge of the forces that transform societies and forge nations. The specialised focus of American Literature with Creative Writing will give you the critical tools to better understand how culture is produced while you hone your own creative practice. 

Your year abroad will give your degree further cosmopolitan flavour, enhancing your understanding of your subject and presenting you with invaluable opportunities for enriching your creative writing skills from an international perspective. You’ll take modules at your host university, whilst experiencing the culture of another country first-hand. Your year abroad will increase your confidence, broaden your horizons, build your contacts and demonstrate your resilience to future employers.

You’ll spend your third year studying abroad. Our Year Abroad programme has been running for more than 30 years and is one of the largest in the UK for American Studies. Your time abroad will be an invaluable academic and cultural experience, one that most students consider to be the highlight of their time at university.

Study and Modules

Throughout your degree you’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars. We pride ourselves on our small group seminar teaching, which allows a greater level of discussion between academic staff and students. 

In first year seminars, you’ll learn how to listen to and critique the ideas of others, as well as how to present and defend your own arguments effectively. You’ll be introduced to the specific study skills needed for success on the course, including dedicated sessions to help you make the most of UEA’s state-of-the-art library facilities. Through these sessions and your academic modules, you’ll gain the crucial research skills of uncovering resources and critically assessing sources.   

In addition to timetabled lecture and seminar slots, each member of UEA staff holds dedicated office hours where you can come and seek additional advice on a one-to-one basis. You’ll also be assigned an adviser who will support you through your studies by providing academic and career guidance. 

Compulsory Modules

American literature i: imagining america, american literature ii: making it 'new', american studies ii: beyond boundaries, creative writing: beginnings, america now, america then, creative writing and identity: tutorial unit.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.

Teaching and Learning

We use a variety of assessment methods in modules, with a particular focus on developing your creative voice.  You will receive constructive feedback on every piece of assessment that you submit. Your creative work will also be workshopped by your peers. These comments and reflections will help you identify the methods and strategies to improve your work and get the most out of your studies.

In your first year, your assessment will focus on ensuring you have the skills of research and analysis you will need to pursue more independent learning as you progress through the degree. 

In your second year, the compulsory module encourages you to reflect on your own creative writing. In seminars and creative writing workshops you’ll develop as a writer, reader and editor of your own and other people’s work. This module will enhance your understanding of American literature, but also your skills in critical reading and creative writing. 

At this stage of your degree, you’ll choose from a range of module options, allowing you to embark on academic specialisation in a particular area.

You’ll consolidate your independent learning skills. As you progress into the second year of your degree, you’ll develop as a self-motivated researcher and independent thinker. You will choose from optional modules that allow you to plot a path through the course in line with your specific interests.  

In your second year, you’ll have more autonomy over your assessment. For example, you may devise your own research questions or opt for a creative response to the module organiser’s prompts, even in your American literature modules. You’ll continue to refine your own writing, hone your ability to present your knowledge to others and to collaborate with peers.

You’ll spend your third year abroad. Most students consider this unique academic and cultural experience to be the highlight of their time at university.

AMERICAN STUDIES SEMESTER ABROAD: AUSTRALIA

American studies year abroad, american studies semester abroad: america.

This year will be spent abroad, enrolling on modules related to the study of America at one of our partner institutions.  

You’ll spend this year studying abroad in one of our partner institutions. Although you’ll need to ensure you pass the modules you take this year, the marks you achieve on your year abroad don’t count toward your final degree classification.  

In your final year, you’ll continue to specialise, choosing modules relating to the research specialisms of academic staff within the department of American Studies and the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing. In the Autumn semester, you’ll also take a specialist creative writing module oriented around an American theme. 

In the second semester of your final year – guided by an academic supervisor – you’ll have the option to complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice. Indeed, as a creative writing student in the department of American Studies you will have the option to write an extended dissertation consisting of your own creative work. 

CREATIVE WRITING-NARRATIVES

American apocalypse: twenty-first century climate change fiction, american gothic, queers read this : narratives of gender and sexuality, children's literature, american studies dissertation, the beats and after.

Throughout your time at UEA, you’ll be taught by academics working at the forefront of their fields. Our academics have been published widely on key issues that have shaped the development of American literature. You will also benefit from their experience as practitioners in the creative industries and will have the opportunity to build your own network of contacts and work-related experience to further your future career. In your final year, you will develop your expertise in areas that align with the specialisms of these staff. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your writerly voice further by developing a creative dissertation in the genre of your choice. 

In your final year, you’ll have the exciting option to write a creative dissertation in the genre of your choice with the support of expert staff. In your critical modules you will be assessed on the depth of your knowledge of specialised topics in American literature. Your final degree result is determined by the marks you receive in your second and final years of study.

UEA are committed to ensuring that Higher Education is accessible to all, regardless of their background or experiences. One of the ways we do this is through our contextual admissions schemes .  

You are required to have Mathematics and English Language at a minimum of Grade C or Grade 4 or above at GCSE. 

Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. We require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading):   

IELTS: 6.5 overall (minimum 5.5 in all components)

If you do not meet the academic and/or English language requirements for direct entry our partner, INTO UEA offers progression on to this undergraduate degree upon successful completion of a preparation programme. Depending on your interests, and your qualifications you can take a variety of routes to this degree: 

International Foundation in Humanities and Law (for Year 1 entry to UEA) 

Creative Writing Portfolio

If you do not have an A-Level or equivalent qualification in English Literature (or English Language and Literature), once you have submitted your UCAS form we may then contact you to ask you to submit a short analysis of a passage of a literary text in support of your application.

Applicants will be asked to send in a short sample creative writing portfolio.  We ask for around five A4 pages of work which can be poetry, fiction, script or creative non-fiction (but no reviews) or a mixture of these.

Prepare for a career writing for theatre, film, or television with an MA that allows you to explore and produce dramatic writing across the media.

You’ll study both the theory and practice of dramatic writing, addressing contemporary critical debates, analysing written and performance texts, and experimenting with a range of techniques in original writing. You’ll develop your skills in constructive criticism and creative editing of your peers’ writing, creating a supportive writers’ network in the process.

You’ll be taught by renowned theorists, practitioners, and visiting specialists through seminars, presentations, screenings, workshops, readings, and performance visits. All with the rigour and professional insight that are the hallmark of our creative writing teaching.

The scriptwriting strand of our world-renowned MA Creative Writing has three core modules.

First, Dramaturgy, in which you’ll study the core conventions of drama as explored from Aristotle to McKee and as embodied in a range of plays, films, and TV programmes, from Antigone to I May Destroy You.

You will also take part in the Scriptwriting workshop, building upon your study of dramaturgical theory, where each week you will benefit from the scrutiny and feedback of your fellow writers and workshop leaders, such as the renowned scriptwriters Steve Waters, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Molly Naylor, Ben Musgrave, and Sian Evans. You’ll incorporate this theory into your own writing practice in weekly creative development workshops, completing scriptwriting and planning exercises. Over the course of the workshop, you and your fellow writers will bring your exercises to the group for discussion and evaluation.

You’ll then go on to study the Process module, where you will explore the differing contexts of scriptwriting across media and develop a script for your choice of medium, building an idea from concept to realisation and exploring the modes of script development that are common practice for working writers.

Over the summer, you’ll also write a dissertation, under the supervision of a member of our faculty.
