Essay response option

Write an analytical or creative response of 200 words or less

If you choose to select the essay response option, make sure that you are brainstorming and outlining your response from the start. 

The core values of the University of Rochester are blatantly laid out in this question. Therefore, make sure you understand them! Figure out which characteristics best represent yourself. 

To make this essay response very easy for you, write down a list of all of University of Rochester’s core values and then write down a time in which you possessed these values. For example, you can write about how becoming the captain of your varsity basketball team in high school helped you learn responsibility  and reap the benefits of being a leader. 

Completing this brainstorming method for each core value will help you narrow down the best narratives and examples of the traits that you possess.

Creative response option

Upload up to three works of your own art (e.g. pictures, video, performances, literary) and use the space below to provide a brief explanation as to how the art is tied to making the world, your community and those around you “ever better.”

This response quite literally provides you with a lot of creativity. The University of Rochester is allowing you the freedom to show off your artistic and creative talents. Therefore, select a piece of work that is meaningful to you. 

Remember, although this response allows a lot of creative freedom, it is still a part of Essay 1. Therefore, be sure you are connecting your piece of art back to the essay at hand. Be sure to link your work to one of University of Rochester’s core values.

If you completed any research in high school or have any published research, now would be the time to share it! This will definitely give you a leg up on the competition and show the University of Rochester that you will fit in amazingly at their institution. 

If you have not completed any research, do not worry (most high school students have not!). Therefore, it may make more sense to complete one of the other options. 

For the second University of Rochester supplemental essay, you’ll choose between one of three prompts to respond to.

After, this is a perfect opportunity to reveal how well you did your research on the University of Rochester’s clubs and organizations. You should connect your quirk to an extracurricular offered at the University of Rochester! 

For example, maybe what makes you unique is that you love to go for runs because it helps calm you down and gives you the chance to see new scenery. Therefore, you are so excited to join the University of Rochester running club to meet like-minded running friends.

The personal statement, common to almost all applications, is an especially important piece of writing. Some thoughts about personal statements:

It should demonstrate you are a thoughtful, careful, and well-prepared candidate.

It should contain no grammatical (or other) errors, it should be well organized, it should make good use of the space allotted, and it should be tailored for its intended audience.

Assume your audience is a practicing member of the profession you are seeking to join.

Readers of your essay will have access to the rest of your application, so your essay should do new work for you. You may consider including important and relevant information not included elsewhere in your application, or expanding on the significance of one or two qualifications or experiences treated only briefly elsewhere in your application.

A narrative summary of information available in the rest of your essay will rarely add anything to your application.

If there is a specific prompt, be sure you answer the question(s) in that prompt.

Prize clarity and honesty above rhetorical flourishes. Readers view your personal statement as the best chance to get to know the real you (prior to the interview). The University of Rochester is a private research university located in upstate New York. While situated only a few miles from the shores of Lake Ontario and minutes away from downtown Rochester, the university is surrounded by a quaint, residential neighborhood. Founded in 1850, Rochester has since become famous for the Institute of Optics, the first place in the world to offer a degree in optics, as well as the Eastman School of Music.

Rochester is home to a wide range of majors — from materials science and clinical psychology to financial economics and biotechnology, there should be no surprise that 16,503 applications were submitted for admission to the Class of 2020. Slightly fewer than 6,000 students were accepted, leading to an acceptance rate of 35%. Of the 1,338 members of the class, one-third were accepted early decision.

When applying to the University of Rochester, you’ll not only want to have a high-school GPA above the average of 3.8 and ACT or SAT scores above the 90th percentile, but also a stellar application essay. The toughest part of this essay is undoubtedly the word limit — this prompt is not only asking you to explain “Why Rochester?” but also how you use your talents to improve your community and the world around you. With only 250 words, you need to pay special attention to detail to how you organize your response.

In order to craft a cohesive essay, you’ll need to weave a common thread between the two parts of the prompt. In other words, as you are describing how you make the world a better place, you need to link your action back to why you’d like to attend the University of Rochester.

Choose a Relevant Topic

To answer this prompt effectively, you first will need to decide what you’ll be writing about — of the many activities and community service projects you’ve done throughout the years, which one best exemplifies your passion for improving society? Pick something that is easy to understand (and therefore doesn’t require a lot of explanation), but also something that’s powerful.

Alternatively, a great subject for your response can come from unexpected activities as well. For example, while being the drum major in your high school marching band doesn’t immediately seem like a way to improve society, you could explain how you improved your band community by instilling confidence in less-experienced players to discover their motivation for music.

If you’ve done any sort of activism (like participating in a political campaign, or lobbying for a cause you believe in) or community service (such as a soup kitchen or pro bono tutoring), you could try to focus in on that. Choose one of your unique talents and explain how that “ability to do” allowed you to thrive in your selected activity.

For example, maybe you’re a natural leader, and got a group of friends together to protest the anti-environment policies of a local politician. Or perhaps you’re an avid computer programmer and designed an app to help people quit smoking.

Maybe you should consider an entrepreneurial approach: If you realized a previously unmet need of a group of people, and addressed it (like opening and running a school store in your high school to provide low-cost supplies to students), you can certainly utilize it in the essay. As long as you show how your ability/talent helps you to improve the world, you’re sure to impress the reader.

Relate Specific Examples to Rochester

At the same time, you also need to tie your activism back to the University of Rochester. Check out the university website, and find a program , research opportunity , club , or course that is aligned with what you’ve already been doing to change the world. Explain how you’d take advantage of the resources available at Rochester to continue your quest to improve not only your home community, but the university’s community as well.

For instance, if you were very involved with a science research program back in high school, and were developing a device to easily desalinate water for third-world nations, you could explain how excited you are to conduct further research in the department of chemical engineering at the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

If you were volunteering for a local campaign during high school, you could write about how you found the syllabus for PSC 237: U.S. Policymaking Process particularly exciting. The more you look into the opportunities available at Rochester, the stronger your essay will be!

Rochester Essay Writing Tips

Special Notes:

• While interviewing is not required, it is strongly recommended, and can increase chances of receiving a merit scholarship. 
• The combined degree programs have different deadlines than regular admissions. 
• Students applying to the Eastman School of Music must use the dedicated application program, not the common or coalition apps. Students will also have to submit pre-screen recordings depending on the instrument. Deadlines for Eastman are prior to November 1st for priority, or prior to December 1st at the latest.
• A supplemental writing sample may be included at the student’s discretion. 
• The school of nursing may only be applied to by highschoolers as part of the Dual Degree in Nursing (DDN) program. This requires a separate application to the college.
• The transfer deadline is a priority one; students are accepted on a rolling basis after it passes, but those who apply before are given priority for on-campus housing and financial aid.
• Students must submit official college transcripts, and one letter of recommendation, which they suggest come from a professor. They also require a letter from a high school guidance counselor.
• They have a test-flexible policy, which means students should submit scores from tests they feel best show them as a student.

Rochester Admission Strategy

The most important factors are high school academic record, extracurriculars, recommendations, course rigor, and personal character. Important, but secondary factors are GPA, interview, standardized test scores, essay, and talent. 

Factors which are considered are legacy status, geographic origin, ethnicity, first-generation status, and demonstrated interest.

Interviews are of important note among the criteria. While many colleges allow for interviews, they are a key component of admissions at Rochester, even if they aren’t mandatory. The school uses the interview to determine where a student’s passions lie, and to answer key questions that often get asked in essays; namely: why us, and what major or field of study are you interested in. Interviews are informal, and should be treated as 20 minute conversations.

Rochester does recruit athletes, but they do not gain a major boost in their admissions chances. 

Like most other top universities, they seek students who are passionate specialists. More, they want students whose passions can be best served by the options at the University of Rochester.

What is Rochester Looking For?

Rochester is an upper tier institution, but not at the very top level. They are competing for students with many schools at a higher tier, and in some ways they accept their status as a backup plan for students who apply to the very top tier schools. Their offers of merit based aid are an effort to attract these students. 

They are still a top school, and want students who are genuinely interested in their programs and offerings. Like most other top universities, they seek students who are passionate specialists. More, they want students whose passions can be best served by the options at the University of Rochester. 

Among admissions criteria, the rigor of the student’s high school classes, and how well they performed in those classes, is most important. As the school has gone test-flexible, and is moving towards entirely test-optional, standardized tests matter far less. That said, if you have done well on standardized tests, the scores can only boost your chances of admission (though high scores can’t overcome low grades). Equally important to this is extracurricular involvement. This does not reflect what activities a student has done, but rather how deeply they involved themselves with activities, and whether they properly demonstrated any passions by doing so.

Rochester Strategy:

Getting good grades in challenging classes and showing a clear passion are the easiest ways to boost your admissions chances for Rochester. While doing well on standardized tests will provide a boost, they are not as important here as they are at many other top schools. 

Students should have and demonstrate a clear passion throughout their application. This makes them more memorable to admissions officers, and helps them stand out. The student should also try to demonstrate why they would be best able to pursue this passion at Rochester, instead of any other school. 

As Rochester does consider demonstrated interest, this is a simple yet effective way to gain a small boost to admissions chances. One of the best ways to demonstrate interest is by applying Early Decision, or Early Decision II if you aren’t ready by the first deadline.

The essay question is important for Rochester. Consider which of the three you are best able to complete; writing is the most straightforward. Uploading art should be done if you had a focus on visual art in high school. If you are far better at the hard sciences, then describing what research you wish to pursue, and how Rochester will help you do it, is your best track.

Finally, you should always partake in an interview when applying to Rochester if possible. Not only is it strongly suggested and highly considered, it helps admissions officers know you better, and the officer conducting the interview will be better able to advocate for you when making admissions decisions. The interview is a place for you to discuss what you are passionate about, and why Rochester is the best venue for you to pursue those passions.

Financial Aid:

All students are considered for need-based financial aid. These grants are awarded after personal contributions, work-study, and merit-based scholarships have been determined, and are supplemented by loans. In order to be considered for aid, students need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before the deadline. The deadline is determined by when the student applied. The majority of students at Rochester receive some form of financial assistance.

Scholarships: 

All students are considered for merit-based scholarships during the application process. These are awarded for the student’s first year, and renewed each year if satisfactory performance is maintained. Award amounts range from $2,000-full tuition. Current students may apply for additional scholarships that they qualify for, although this is a smaller and more selective group. Students will only be awarded one merit-based scholarship.

An Introduction to Supplemental Essays

What is a Supplemental Essay?

A supplemental essay is an additional essay, besides the main one, submitted by applicants along with their college application. While the main college essay gives the admissions committee a peek into an applicant’s strengths and achievements, the supplemental essay provides more information on the applicant’s opinions, traits, and beliefs, based on which an application is either selected or rejected. 

Depending on the college or university, applicants may be required to submit one or more supplemental essays apart from the primary college essay . 

Common Supplemental Essay Topics

Supplemental essay topics are college-specific and therefore vary from one college to another. They are also different from the main college application essay topics . 

Below are some college supplemental essay example prompts from colleges across the country. 

1. Why Us? 

This is one of the most common questions asked by colleges. The aim of this question is to understand an applicant’s keenness to join a college or university. 

Following are some examples of ‘Why Us’ supplemental essay questions. 

• Your moment has arrived. Share with us the moments or experiences that have led you to apply to Babson College. (500 words maximum) – Babson College Essay Prompt, 2022–2023.
• Briefly describe why you are interested in attending SMU and what specific factors have led you to apply. (250-word limit) – Southern Methodist University, 2022–2023.
• Why are you interested in American University? (150 words) – American University, 2022–2023

2. Community Contribution

Colleges often prefer candidates who can add value to their community. If an applicant has already participated in community activities, then sharing such an experience is a good way to earn some brownie points.

Following are some examples of supplemental essay prompts that aim to understand a candidate’s willingness to be a part of a community. 

• Sarah Lawrence College’s community places strong value in inclusion and diversity. Tell us about what you value in a community and how your perspective, lived experiences, or beliefs might contribute to your College community. (250-500 words) – Sarah Lawrence College, 2022–2023.

3. Subject of Choice

This essay prompt helps admissions committees understand a candidate’s academic background, future goals, and the kind of support they would need from the college to achieve their academic goals. 

Following are some examples of supplemental essay prompts that direct students to elaborate on why they have chosen a particular subject. 

• Please explain why you wish to study in the academic areas you selected. (150 word limit.) – Rice University, 2022–2023. 
• Please write in the space provided describing your interest in the subject(s) you wish to study at the University of St Andrews. (400 words) – University of St Andrews, 2021–2022. 
• Please tell us why you chose the Majors you did? (100 words) – The University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2022–2023.
• Why do you want to study your chosen major specifically at Georgia Tech? (300 words) – Georgia Tech, 2022–2023. 

4. Non-Scholastic Activities

From being a member of a literary club to working as an apprentice, there are several extracurricular activities that help students develop new skills or hone existing ones. Essay prompts focused on non-scholastic activities intend to help admissions committees learn about an applicant’s skills developed from participating in extracurricular activities. 

Following are some examples of supplemental essay topics that focus on non-scholastic activities. 

• Briefly (approximately one-half page, single-spaced) discuss the significance to you of the school or summer activity in which you have been most involved. – Harvard, 2022–2023. 
• Have you participated in or been assisted in your college preparation and search by programs outside of the classroom, such as Educational Talent Search, Take Stock in Children, Upward Bound, Boys and Girls Club, etc.? (250 words) – University of Florida, 2022–2023. 
• Tell us about a time when you advocated for something you believe in. (200 words) – University of Notre Dame, 2022–2023. 
• Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (200-400 words) – The Vanderbilt University, 2022–2023. 

5. More About You

One way to tackle this question is to focus on strengths, skills, or interests that haven’t been mentioned in the college application or personal statement. Since the supplemental essay has to be kept short, writing about one or two specific traits or skills would suffice.

Below are some examples of supplemental essay prompts that are aimed at better understanding an applicant. 

• In what ways are you the right fit for the distinctive educational and campus experience that Worcester Polytechnic Institute offers? (500 words max.) – Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 2021 – 2022. 
• Use this space to share something you’d like the admissions committee to know about you (your interests, your background, your identity or your community) and how it has shaped what you want to get out of your college experience at Hopkins. (300-400 words) – Johns Hopkins University, 2022 – 2023. 
• Virtually all of Stanford’s undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—get to know you better. (250 words max.) – Stanford University, 2022 – 2023. 
• Tell us about something that is meaningful to you, and why? (250 words max.) – Stanford University, 2022 – 2023. 

Things to Remember while Writing Supplemental Essays

Supplemental essays should offer additional insights about an applicant to the admissions committee. Following are some points to consider while writing such an essay.

• Non-repetitive content: The content of a supplemental essay should be unique. It should not repeat what is already mentioned in the college application or the personal statement . 
• Word count limit: Supplemental essays include anywhere from 200 words to 500 words and are hence shorter than the main college admission essay.. It is important to read the essay guidelines and ensure that the supplemental essay does not exceed the word limit. 
• Unconventional topics: Often, colleges come up with quirky topics to analyze an applicant’s ability to get creative. While attempting unconventional or controversial topics, it’s important to think outside the box to be able to impress the admissions officers. 

Although writing a supplemental essay isn’t always mandatory, admissions officers mostly give preference to applicants who choose to write and submit supplemental essays. These essays, when written well, can help an applicant get their foot in the door to getting an admission into their favorite college.  

How to Apply

The application process for the Pre-College Programs is similar to the college application process. Students are required to submit materials such as short essays, a high school transcript, or a letter of recommendation. The selection committee enjoys learning about students who are passionate, involved, and eager to experience college life.

Please understand many of our courses are highly selective and have limited space available.

4. Pay the nonrefundable $60 application fee online through your application (Mastercard, Visa, American Express, or Discover are accepted).

You can find all required forms that need to be submitted online in your application. Follow the step-by-step instructions that takes students through the application. You are also able to save the work you’ve have done in the application and re-visit the application at a later time to complete and submit it.

Any required forms are available to complete electronically through your online application. In certain circumstances a document may need to be uploaded by the student, which you will see in the online application. Intensive Studies applicants are asked to write a short essays (500 word maximum). The selection committee is interested in learning more about your experiences and interests.

Yes. Both are part of the application process.

The transcript must come from your high school counselor. There will be a section in the application where the student can enter in the counselor’s contact information and an email will be automatically sent to the counselor requesting the transcript on behalf of the student. The school counselor will have access to submit the official transcript for the student’s application.

The letter of recommendation must come from a school official who can speak to your academics, as well as your potential fit related to the classes you are choosing. There will be a section in the application where the student can enter in the school official’s contact information and an email will be automatically sent to the school official requesting the letter of recommendation on behalf of the student. The school official will have access to submit the letter of recommendation for the student’s application.

Limited aid is available and is awarded to families in need of the assistance; this is not a merit-based award.  We cannot guarantee that all eligible applicants will receive aid.  The deadline to apply for aid is April 1 . Financial assistance may not fully cover a student’s expenses for the Pre-College Programs, and students are encouraged to seek other sources of funding. To be considered for financial assistance, you will need to complete the Financial Aid Application.

We do request that international students submit one of the following to prove English fluency: Duolingo, InitialView, TOEFL, or IELTS. If you believe that you should be exempt from submitting one of the above, you can submit a waiver within the application.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for the non-credit courses and credit courses. Once your application is complete and submitted, please allow two to three weeks for the selection committee to review your application and make a final decision.

Applications for the full-day programs are not reviewed until after the application deadline. Please understand that the full-day programs are highly selective and applications are reviewed based on best fit for the program and not on a first come, first serve basis.

While Rochester’s Pre-College Programs cannot guarantee participants’ admission to the University of Rochester or its combined degree programs, successful participation will enhance a student’s resume, which may prove beneficial when applying to selective universities.
