Social Research Methods Centre

An interdisciplinary Centre working across the Faculty in social science methods

Welcome to the Social Research Methods Centre at the University of Leeds!

This is a hub for sharing our diverse methods across the Faculty of Social Sciences. Our use of varied methods enables transformative research surrounding the human experience and societal challenges.

We run monthly informal events, and provide a community for social scientists within the University to share ideas and discuss their work. This is a creative space to bring colleagues and postgraduate researchers together and our goal is to provide more methods training and development in the future.

This research centre will be a means of strengthening our methods expertise to make strong interdisciplinary contributions to the Faculty and the University, as well as the global methods community.

We have a number of Methods Ambassadors across all four schools of the Faculty, who bring a wealth of expertise and enthusiasm to our events and our goals.

Social Research MA

Year of entry 2024, masters study and funding online event.

Join us online on Wednesday 5 June to receive expert advice on how to make your Masters a reality with funding. Book your place

Course overview

Student in seminar room

On this rewarding course, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge to produce meaningful social research.

You’ll take core modules that will teach you how to turn social research issues and questions into workable research designs, as well as handle quantitative and qualitative data and issues such as ethics and funding applications.

You’ll also have the chance to specialise through a choice of optional modules, allowing you to pursue your interests and focus on research in disciplines such as disability studies, care, social policy analysis, criminology and evaluation of programmes and policies.

This course has recently been redesigned to meet the new postgraduate training and development guidelines of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), meaning it stands alone as an MA but will also prepare you to apply for doctoral research in the dynamic fields of social science research. You’ll be well prepared to become a specialist social science researcher, supported by expert tutors across our active research centres and institutes.

Research insight

You’ll learn in a research-intensive, stimulating environment. As well as the Leeds Social Sciences Institute which fosters collaboration, you’ll benefit from the interdisciplinary expertise hosted by the Centre for Disability Studies , Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies , Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and many others. All of these centres run their own calendars of events such as workshops and seminars.

Find out more about Research in the School of Sociology and Social Policy .

Course details

You’ll start the course by building your knowledge of research design, learning to connect research problems you are interested in with methodological and theoretical perspectives and practical research strategies. Sampling and selection, choosing the right data collection and analysis methods, the ethics and politics of research design and creating research proposals will all be among the topics you explore.

You’ll also have the chance to deepen your subject knowledge with your optional module, honing in on an area that interests you. You could focus on crime, social policy analysis or evaluative research as well as disability studies, care or social thought.

In semester two, you’ll begin intensive training in analysing quantitative and qualitative data. You’ll learn to use statistical software, design surveys and questionnaires and record, code, organise and manage qualitative data. You’ll evaluate different research methods, understanding their benefits, limitations, and ethical implications.

By the end of the programme, you’ll submit a research project that puts the skills you’ve gained into practice – and perhaps lay the foundations of your future research.

Course structure

The list shown below represents typical modules/components studied and may change from time to time. Read more in our terms and conditions.

Learning and teaching

At Leeds we use a range of teaching and learning methods to help you make the most of your studies and equip you with the specialist skills you’ll need in your career. These include seminars, tutorials, online learning and presentations.

Independent study is also vital to this programme, allowing you to refine your skills and prepare for your taught sessions.

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Programme specification:

This programme will appeal to people who are looking for an advanced theoretical and practical training in social research methods and who would like to apply their training to real-world problems. Graduates go on to work in government agencies, quasi-governmental, national and international non-governmental organizations, not-for-profit and private-sector organizations where they design, implement and deliver social research. The course also offers a rigorous foundation for PhD studies in the Social Sciences. It has been designed to meet the guidelines for post graduate training for social research developed by the Economic and Social Research Council. The MA Social Research will provide students with highly marketable skills in qualitative techniques (e.g. interviewing, focus groups), quantitative techniques (e.g. surveys and social statistics) and mixed-method research. The programme focuses upon real-world research and evaluation problems. Students will learn about the underlying philosophical and methodological foundations of social research as well as the practical application of social research methods. They will have the opportunity to specialize, drawing upon the extensive and internationally recognized research and methodological expertise of academic staff across the University of Leeds, and researchers and users of research from public, not-for-profit, and private sector organizations. The programme will be taught by experts in realist research and evaluation methodologies, qualitative longitudinal research and techniques that are inclusive and empowering of marginalized groups. Staff teaching onto this programme are also methodological innovators, having interests in big data, data analytics, visual methods and social media research. Our research and expertise will inform the content, opportunities and possible areas of study for students undertaking the MA Social Research. This innovative programme of learning and teaching aims to provide students with a thorough and critical understanding of a wide range of social research strategies, and of information relevant to social research practice. This includes the significance of different theoretical and epistemological bases of social research, and the relation of the social research enterprise to key concerns and debates within an elective pathway in sociology, social policy, gender studies or disability studies amongst other areas of expertise within the School. It aims to familiarize students with issues in the relationships between research, practice and policy, and in the use and dissemination of social research. Students will have the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and mastery of a portfolio of 'hands on' methodological skills, knowledge and competencies, incorporating quantitative and qualitative methods, and to demonstrate an understanding of the evaluation and application of these methods. Students will be required to demonstrate the ability to design and execute a piece of social research, making practical use of methodological knowledge and skills developed in the programme, and to formulate a rigorous and independent argument on the basis of that research and its methodology. After completion of this programme students should have the necessary competencies to embark upon PhD research in the social sciences. On completion of the programme students will be able to: - Understand a philosophy of research methods to inform the principles of research design and strategy, including how to formulate research questions which are amenable to empirical investigation, and design methods of investigation, data collection, analysis and dissemination to address these questions; - Apply a broad range of research methods, (including quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods), and the use of appropriate software for their application); - Develop advanced research skills and techniques relevant to specific areas of study and spe niques relevant to specific areas of study and specialisation; - Consider and apply good ethical practice across the entire research process.
