Hundreds flock to IRSC planetarium to experience rare, 'once-in-a-lifetime' solar eclipse

school assignment st lucie county

FORT PIERCE — Lawn chairs, telescopes and heads craned skyward surrounded the entrance of Hallstrom Planetarium Monday afternoon as the Treasure Coast joined in the eclipse fever gripping the country.

More than 300 people converged at the planetarium on the Indian River State College campus, not to watch the total eclipse moving across the country's heartland but for the partial eclipse visible here, projected on the dome of the planetarium and from the grounds outside throughout the day.

Parents took their kids out of school and retirees spent the afternoon to witness the last solar eclipse visible in the United States until 2044.

"I picked [my son] up from school because it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I would want to do together," said John Cesar, of Fort Pierce, who picked up his son John-Michael from his second grade class at Fairlawn Elementary School.

For some families, Hallstrom Planetarium became their classroom.

Elaine Reed, of Fort Pierce, who homeschools her two sons ― sixth grader Abraham and 10th grader Samuel ― brought them out with their backpacks, prepared with solar-eclipse glasses and snacks, to watch the partial solar eclipse.

"It gives them hands-on learning with science and getting to experience it," Reed, 52, said.

While Florida missed out on totality, people in parts of Canada, Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine got a blackout view of the sky for a few minutes.

In Fort Pierce, maximum coverage was about 52%, with more than half of the sun obscured by the moon.

When is the next total solar eclipse?

Total solar eclipses occur about every 18 months, but the next time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States is 2044. The Treasure Coast, though, will be hundreds of miles from that path of totality 20 years from now.

But hang in there: The Treasure Coast finally will get its spot in the path of totality for the Aug. 12, 2045, eclipse.

People at Monday's viewing already were excited for 2045, with some even counting down how old they'll be once totality covers the Treasure Coast.

"If I'm still alive, I want someone to wheel me out of the old-folks home so I can see," said Port St. Lucie resident Rick Allen, who said he would be 103 when for the 2045 eclipse.

The last time the Treasure Coast was in the path of totality, and got 100% obscuration, was 1918, when totality lasted for about 30 seconds, according to Time and Date AS.

Here's what's coming up:

  • March 30, 2052 : The path of totality will go directly over the Florida panhandle, providing the best views from Pensacola, Panama City Beach and Tallahassee.
  • May 11, 2078 : Totality will be seen only in a small area in the northwest section of the Florida panhandle. While the viewing area will be small, parts of Florida should see total coverage of the sun for up to 4½ minutes.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Friends and family are mourning the loss of a Port St. Lucie couple killed this past weekend in a head-on crash in Polk County.

The two-vehicle wreck claimed the lives of Luis Rodriguez, 54, and Joamar (Josie) Maldonado, 52. The couple were traveling with their 3-year-old grandson, Jaydyn, but he survived the crash.

The child was taken to a local hospital and was expected to make a full recovery.

The family was returning home from Busch Gardens in Tampa, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The crash also killed Hannah Wieser, 22, of Winter Haven, who was driving a 2015 Ford Flex westbound on State Road 60 East, east of County Road 630. Investigators said Wieser entered the eastbound lane to pass a van. However, she struck the Port St. Lucie couple's Ford F-150, which was traveling east, head-on.

The sheriff's office said everyone involved in the wreck was wearing seatbelts.

St. Lucie Public Schools said Maldonado was a teacher at West Gate K-8 School where she taught English to students who speak another language (ESOL).

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to her family and friends during this difficult time," the school district said.

The school will have on-site grief counseling services available to students and staff.

Gabriel Rodriguez shares memories of his parents, Luis Rodriguez and Joamar (Josie) Maldonado, who were killed in a crash in Polk County.

Gabriel Rodriguez, the couple’s son, spoke to WPTV on Monday after losing his parents.

He was first alerted that something was wrong Saturday after his mother's Apple watch sent an SOS alert to him.

"Since I'm one of her emergency contacts, it went to me," Rodriguez said.

He said his parents loved life, their family and friends.

"They did everything," Rodriguez said. "It's gonna be a tough few years, tough rest of life, but we're going to be able to get through it."

The couple's family has started a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral costs.

Two internal whistleblowers at Faraday Future claim the troubled EV company has been lying about some of the few sales it has announced to date. The employees, Jose Guerrero and Victoria Xie, have made those claims in a pair of newly filed lawsuits against Faraday Future and Jia -- as well as the company's head of HR, Nan Yang -- in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging wrongful termination, breach of contract, and infliction of emotional distress. Both lawsuits also highlight what has been the central tension of Faraday Future: that its founder, Jia, allegedly continues to assert control over the company despite having been sidelined in 2022 as the result of an internal probe.

Man arrested for 55 burglaries at various construction sites in Port St. Lucie

school assignment st lucie county

A 50-year-old man is in jail for stealing property at numerous construction sites, Port St. Lucie police said.

Police said Arnoldo Perez-Miraba, of Greenacres, broke into 55 homes under construction in Port St. Lucie and stole circuit breakers and electrical panels.

The investigation began on Feb. 19 with 12 reported burglaries of homes under construction in the 6300 block of Northwest Sweetwater Drive. Police said nearly $15,000 worth of circuit breakers were stolen.

According to Port St. Lucie detectives, from Feb. 20 through Feb. 27, 27 additional burglaries of homes under construction were reported in the 14200 block of Southwest Britton Avenue, the 11800 block of Southwest Macelli Way and the 9700 block of Southwest Triton Way, where nearly $28,000 worth of circuit breakers and electrical panels were stolen.

Then on March 8, police said five more burglaries of homes under construction were reported in the 500 block of Southeast Ranch Oak Circle and in the 600 block of Southeast Lake Falls Street, where nearly $15,000 worth of circuit breakers were stolen.

Police said they were able to identify Perez-Mirabal as the suspect when they lifted a fingerprint from one of the crimes committed along Northwest Sweetwater Drive. Detectives said his fingerprints were also located at several other crime scenes and police were able to get surveillance video of his car.

Following a lengthy investigation, detectives located Perez-Mirabal and arrested him on April 5. Police said they were able to link him to all 55 burglaries that spanned the entire city based on interviews and evidence found at the crime scenes.

According to Port St. Luice police, Perez-Mirabal is a painter by trade who was not a subcontractor for any of the homes under construction that were burglarized. They said that once he located and burglarized the homes under construction for their circuit breakers and electrical panels, he would later sell them for money.

Perez-Miraba is facing numerous charges, including 55 counts of burglary to an unoccupied dwelling and trespassing on a construction site, grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, unlawful use of a two-way communication device, dealing in stolen property and enhancement of traveling across county lines to commit burglary.

He is being held at St. Lucie County Jail on about a $1.2 million bond.

Manatee Academy K8 teacher, fatally shot by husband, remembered as selfless, enthusiastic

school assignment st lucie county

PORT ST. LUCIE — Jamie Felix, a Manatee Academy K8 teacher, was described as a selfless, caring person, an educator who could make math fun even for students who came into her class not liking the subject.

“My daughter loved how caring she was. She was always enthusiastic,” said Teres Montenegro, 37, whose daughter, Brianna, was in Felix’s algebra 1 honors class in eighth grade. “Her and my daughter actually had a wonderful relationship. They were very close.”

According to investigators, Felix, 45, was abducted March 29 along with their two children, ages 17 and 10, in Port St. Lucie by her estranged husband, 60-year-old Ray Felix, before he fatally shot her in front of the children in West Palm Beach and then fatally shot himself about a mile away near the Palm Beach International Airport.

Friends and those who knew Jamie Felix remembered her this week, as Port St. Lucie Police shared more information about what they determined occurred before her passing.

Montenegro said Jamie Felix was good with all the students, who called her a “school mom.” She said one of Jamie Felix’s sons also attends Manatee Academy K8, in the 1400 block of Southwest Heatherwood Boulevard.

The location is west of Florida’s Turnpike and north of Crosstown Parkway, not far from St. Lucie West Centennial High School.

Montenegro said Jamie Felix also was involved with tutoring at school, and her daughter had interacted with her before.

“She was always present in anything,” Montenegro said. “If the kids were at lunch walking around, if they needed someone to just talk to.”

Melissa Chevres, 43, said she works at St. Lucie West Centennial High School in exceptional student education, and has been there for three years. Her youngest son and Jamie Felix’s eldest son play basketball together, and were on the same team at Centennial.

“During the day, her son would come in my office, like all the basketball kids at times to get snacks and things of that nature. So we developed a very close relationship because of basketball,” Chevres said. “She often thanked me for being there for (Jamie Felix’s son) during the school day.”

Chevres said as an exceptional student education specialist, students have individual educational plan meetings in her office.

“I can't tell you how many students who were struggling in the math at our school would tell me that when they had Mrs. Felix in Manatee, she was the best,” Chevres said. “They used to say that they wished that our math teachers were like Mrs. Felix because she made them love math.”

Chevres said students came into Jamie Felix’s class not liking math, but she was enthusiastic, and engaged them in different ways to make it fun.

“She always worked to change their perception of numbers, so not look at it as math being difficult but looking at how math can be so important and crucial to your life,” Chevres said. “I can back that up just seeing her on the friend level as well. She was truly amazing.”

Chevres also connected with Jamie Felix as their sons were involved in a travel basketball league.

According to Port St. Lucie police, the two Felix children have been placed temporarily with a family friend.

More details about Jamie and Ray Felix

No one answered the door Monday at the single-story home owned by Jamie and Ray Felix at the end of a cul-de-sac street in Port St. Lucie. Neighbors either declined comment, didn’t know Jamie Felix or didn’t answer the door.

Jamie Felix started with the school district in July 2019 and always had been at Manatee Academy K8, according to Lydia Martin, chief communications officer with St. Lucie Public Schools.

“We will work together to support our students and staff members that have been impacted by her loss, which will include on-site grief counseling services for as long as needed,” Martin provided in an e-mail statement. “Jamie brought joy, passion, and dedication to her students and the staff at Manatee and she will be greatly missed.”

Ray Felix was hired in October 2019 at the school and held a number of positions, including site maintenance worker, paraprofessional, dean's clerk and behavior technician, Martin stated. Ray Felix resigned on Oct. 19, 2023.

The resignation came two days after his arrest by Port St. Lucie police on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge involving Jamie Felix, according to records.

Jamie Felix petitioned for divorce in October, court records show. They married in August 2005.

'Uncharacteristic' email starts investigation

Port St. Lucie Police Acting Chief Richard Del Toro said his agency began investigating March 29 after a concerned co-worker called and indicated Jamie Felix sent an uncharacteristic email. Police responded to the call about 6:23 p.m.

“The email from what I understand was basically that she had lied about the domestic violence incident, which we know not to be true,” Del Toro said. “It sounds to me like that email was placed under duress and heads up by the co-worker for recognizing that.”

Del Toro said it appears Ray Felix had a permanent domestic violence injunction against him.

He said police tried to contact Jamie Felix, but that was unsuccessful.

“That's what led us to go ... try to track her down at her family's residence. We even went to the suspect’s residence, just looking for different vehicles, that matched ... the descriptions,”  Del Toro said. “So we did not have any contact with Jaime at all during this investigation.”

Police in West Palm Beach at 7:38 p.m. started getting 911 calls regarding a woman shot in a parking lot behind a motel on Belvedere Road, police there stated. Jamie Felix sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died. Ray Felix reportedly was driving a rented Nissan west on Belvedere Road from the scene.

“Felix dumped the Nissan at the Hertz Car Rental depot … then walked off the property where officers found him about a quarter-mile away on a service road,” police stated. “As officers approached Felix, he took out a handgun and shot himself in the head.”

Investigators ultimately determined that at about 4 p.m. March 29 Jamie Felix and her children were exiting Urban Air Adventure Park in the 9000 block of South U.S. 1 in Port St. Lucie when Ray Felix forced them in a vehicle and were driven around different parts of St. Lucie County.

“They did return back to the Urban Air Park to retrieve her vehicle. Both vehicles we believe were driven down towards West Palm Beach based on the information we've received so far,” Del Toro said. “That's when the e-mail was sent to the co-workers who then alerted us that that was a little uncharacteristic of her.”

Del Toro said it was roughly 70 minutes between when his agency was contacted to learning about what occurred in West Palm Beach.

Del Toro said it is believed Ray Felix is a former law enforcement officer, but it’s not confirmed.

Police chief urges 'see something, say something'

Del Toro said it’s a good example of “see something, say something,” and that domestic violence situations are “very volatile.”

“They're very sensitive, unfortunately, many times very violent,” Del Toro said. “We are left to deal with these situations with the tools we're given, an injunction is a piece of paper.”

He said they are not “foolproof protection” for domestic violence victims.

“So when we get reports of domestic violence, we need to make sure as law enforcement, we always take those calls serious,” Del Toro said.

He said in his more than 25 years of law enforcement experience, he’s witnessed much violence.

“I see a lot of senseless things that just don't make a lot of sense to me,” Del Toro said. “So what I think we have to do is just continue every single day to do the best job we possibly can to help people get through this.”

Mets sit down ‘beat up’ slugger, shut down another veteran

On the same day the Mets designated one pitcher for assignment and traded another , they announced that two of their sluggers are nursing ailments.

First, Carlos Mendoza announced that J.D. Martinez, who’s been ramping up in Port St. Lucie, is dealing with lower back tightness. As a result, he has received a cortisone injection and will be shut down for three to five days. Francisco Alvarez will miss his second game in the last four because he’s “beat up,” the manager also revealed.

BUY METS TICKETS: STUBHUB , VIVID SEATS , TICKETMASTER

Martinez has dealt with this before, Mendoza said.

“Last year, in April, he dealt with it in (Los Angeles),” Mendoza said, via SNY. “He got a shot and then within seven days he was back swinging the bat. So he got a shot today, so (in) probably three to five days, according to how he responds to the treatment, he should be able to start swinging the bat again and get going.”

The Mets signed Martinez to a one-year deal worth $12 million in March. He’s been going through his hitting progression at the team’s spring training facility ever since.

Alvarez has been one of the team’s best bats this season. In nine games, he’s 9-for-32 (.281 batting average) with four extra-base hits — three doubles and a home run.

Last season, he led all National League catchers with 25 home runs. He’s regarded as one of the best pitch framers behind the plate.

In camp, he worked on his throw to second base , leading all MLB catchers with eight runners caught stealing. This is a big jump from last season, where he ranked last in caught-stealing percentage among big league catchers.

Residents in the Panhandle will see a larger percentage of the sun covered than those farther south.

Here's your guide to what you'll be able to see and how much across Florida.

Will you be able to see the eclipse in Florida?

Yes, but ...

Thirteen states across the U.S. from Texas to Maine are in the path of totality.

Florida is not one of them.

In Florida, residents will see a partial eclipse where the moon doesn't completely block the sun but instead blocks only a percentage of it. How much depends on where you are in the state.

The farther north you are, the larger the percentage of the sun will be blocked by the moon.
