Health and Physical Education

How to use these resources.

TVO Learn is designed to meet each student where they are on their learning journey. Learning Activities are comprehensive and require guided instruction from an adult, while Resources for Learning, Apply the Learning prompts and Vocabulary lists work well to reinforce specific skills or to enable independent exploration of a subject. Use these helpful tips to get the most from TVO Learn.

Curriculum Overview

In grade 7, there is an emphasis on developing relationship skills with a focus on recognizing and coping with stress and challenges in positive ways, to build resilience and an attitude of positive motivation while developing self-awareness and self-confidence in order to nurture a sense of identity and belonging.

Students expand their knowledge of factors that motivate people to be physically active, including understanding connections between physical and mental health, and of ways to motivate others. A more detailed understanding of physical fitness activities that includes factors affecting fitness and the application of training principles to the enhancement of both health-related and skill-related fitness are explored. The work on manipulation skills (throwing, catching, and retaining) emphasizes the use of these skills in combination and in relation to external stimuli in the playing area (e.g., other students, equipment, boundaries). The study of personal safety and injury prevention expands to include situations that students may encounter as they become more independent and active in a wider variety of situations and environments, including online and virtual environments. Students will focus on making connections between their own health and the physical and mental health and well-being of those around them.

The expectations for health and physical education are organized into four distinct but related strands:

  • Social-Emotional Learning Skills
  • Healthy Living
  • Movement Competence: Skills, Concepts, and Strategies
  • Active Living

Middle School Health Education Ms. Smith, Room M106 Email: [email protected]

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental, emotional and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.” –World Health Organization

At SAS Puxi Campus each student will take one semester of Health in grade 6, 7 & 8. Health education at SAS is based on the wellness approach that integrates social, emotional, mental and physical health, as well as the development of personal values.

Assessment Policies:

In health class, we will check for your understanding through a wide variety of assessments. You will be evaluated on the following: 1.. Class discussions: Because this subject deals with REAL LIFE subject matter, participation is the most important thing you can do to learn in this class. You want to make sure you’re engaging with your peers so you can learn to make healthy decisions together! 2. Projects/Presentations 3. Meditation Time (journaling, mindfulness, guided meditations) 4. In class assignments and homework: Most work in health can be completed in class. However, if time is not used wisely, assignments may have to be completed at home.

Your homework is to hang out with your family, or go outside and play!

Health Class Norms

Now it’s your turn to chat! Your job is to come up with how you and your friends want our classroom to run and function by coming up with class norms. When discussing and coming up with ideas, here are some things to think about: What do you value most when learning? How do you think others and yourself should act while in health class? What type of classroom environment do you learn best in?

Jot down class norms in your journal so you’ll always have a place where you can go back and revisit them!
