Considering the ever-increasing pace of life across the globe, possessing a car and being able to drive one has become a necessity. The number of car owners grows exponentially each year, and unfortunately, so does the amount of deaths and injuries related to driving. However, not all of these accidents are regular car crashes; a significant percentage of cases when drivers get hurt or die is caused by a phenomenon widely known as road rage.

This term appeared in California, USA, in the 1980s, to describe a series of shootings that occurred on the freeways of Los Angeles. Perhaps, the most suitable definition for this phenomenon is a driver’s loss of emotional control and/or stability caused by traffic events, and leading to this driver’s deviant or offensive behavior: aggressive driving, verbal and/or gesture abuse, physical attacks, and even gunfire. Apparently, those incidents were not isolated, and road rage gradually turned into one of the biggest driving problems in the United States; during the period between 1990-1996, there was a 51% increase of road rage incidents. In 2007, because of road rage attacks on construction workers, Highway 138 in Los Angeles was closed, and in 2012, there was a mass fistfight near Los Angeles downtown. It is considered that road rage can be linked to at least 218 deaths by murder (and this number increases annually at a rate of 7% each year); also, it is considered that at least 66% of recent traffic fatalities can be linked to aggressive driving, 37% percent of them being cases of gunfire ( Elite Driving School ).

Psychiatrists believe some drivers can be more prone to developing road rage than others. Usually, people who tend to fall into this condition are relatively young (in their late 20s or in the middle of 30s), male, and possibly suffering from a psychological condition called IED—intermittent emotional disorder. This condition can be generally characterized by sudden outbursts of anger accompanied by a decreased ability to control it, and to refrain from releasing it upon others. The factors responsible for such a behavior can be different, starting from chronic stress, and ending up with an intense emotional condition, such as losing a job or an important person ( Traffic School ).

Los Angeles is not the only city in the United States subject to road rage; Phoenix, Miami, Boston, New York, as well as many other big cities across the whole 50 states are on the list too), but it is because of such cases the state of California decided to turn road rage into a legal term, and treat those who succumb to it respectively ( Traffic School ). Road rage is rather often confused with aggressive driving, and although the latter can be the “symptom” of road rage, the first one is a more complex phenomenon. “Legally, road rage is not recognized in most states,” says Dr. Leon James, professor of Psychology at the University of Hawaii. “There are some laws that have been enacted by about 20 states on ‘aggressive driving.’ Still, the majority of states have no laws that mention either road rage or aggressive driving and prefer to handle driving enforcement through existing laws that specify violations.” According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “Aggressive driving is a traffic offense; road rage is a criminal offense.” The NHTSA defines aggressive driving as occurring when “an individual commits a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property,” whereas road rage is “an assault with a motor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the operator or passenger(s) of another motor vehicle or an assault precipitated by an incident that occurred on a roadway” ( South Source ).

If you have found yourself in a situation when another driver started behaving aggressively towards you, the optimal reaction would be to avoid direct eye contact and not behave aggressively in response, regardless of whether it was your fault causing road rage or not ( SafeMotorist.com ). This might seem a bit self-humiliating, as a refusal to stand for your own rights and dignity, but you should remember that drivers with road rage sometimes cannot handle their anger, and if they have firearms or other weapons with them, the situation might turn fatal.

As it can be seen, road rage is a rather widespread phenomenon on the roads of the United States. First noticed by media in the late 1980s, it quickly became one of the main traffic problems in the United States. In some states—California, for example—road rage is already treated as a crime. Drivers subject to road rage are usually young, and suffer from IED, which can cause them to behave uncontrollably. Therefore, the best tactics against such a driver would be to avoid eye contact and not to respond with aggression towards their behavior.

Examples of Road Rage

Usually the term Road Rage is used to refer to an aggression displayed by a driver to the driver or occupants of other vehicles. There are many examples of road Rage like – intentionally tailgating, making rude and indecent gestures, shouting abusively at other drivers, racing without provocation, continuously honking to show arrogance, ramming other vehicles on purpose and intentionally blocking their way or forcing them to stop. Reasons of Road Rage

It is an understandable fact that aggressive driving varies with age, gender and other factors. Drivers between the age group of 20 to 40 are more likely to involve in tailgating, honking and abusing other drivers/riders or pedestrians on road. Younger drivers on the other hand are more likely to involve in over speeding, racing and overtaking an unsuspected driver or rider. Also, women are much less likely to get involve in Road Rage than men.

Reasons for Road Rage however could be personal or psychological, depending on the situation. The aggression that a driver displays on road could have resulted from a bad personal experience, anguish, distress, frustration or sometimes depression. A burden to reach on time and a mind occupied by stress and fear is a perfect ingredient for Road Rage.

Alcohol also plays a significant role in triggering the incidents of Road Rage, as it impairs one’s ability to think rationally and make correct judgments. A driver under the influence of alcohol is most likely to initiate road rage and compromise his as well as other’s safety.

Adolescent drivers below the permissible age limit for driving are most likely to involve in mindless racing, over speeding and performing stunts. These acts not only constitute gross traffic rules violation, but also seriously threaten the life and safety of other road users.

Solutions to Road Rage

1) Exercise Self Control

The basic rule to nip any incident of Road Rage in bud is – don’t provoke, neither get provoked. If you are late for job, stressed out and struggling in traffic and a driver suddenly tries to move ahead, blocking your way. Don’t get enraged as it would only escalate the situation leading to fatal consequences. Keep calm and let him move, maintaining your dignity. Similarly, whatever the situation may be, you should never provoke other drivers or passengers.

2) Don’t Drink and Drive

Driving under influence of alcohol is the most significant causes leading to Road Rage. Alcohol interprets with one’s ability to think, judge and make decisions apart from instilling over confidence and aggressive behaviour. While driving under the influence of alcohol you are most likely to provoke, insult and yell at other drivers. It would be a great decision to let the chauffer drive the car while you relax in the back seat.

3) Don’t Honk too Much

Honking too much of horn might be provocative to other drivers and perceived as a challenge, more so if they are caught in a traffic jam or stressed over something else. So avoid honking unnecessarily and understand that everyone is in a hurry as you are and there is a need to exercise patience.

4) Don’t Stop

Don’t stop your vehicle if confronted by a rogue driver. In case if you are forced to stop, make sure that you stay inside the securely locked vehicle, until help arrives. Always, no matter what, avoid an argument and confrontation, as it would only further escalate the situation, resulting in harmful consequences.

5) Stricter Penalty

Stricter punishments and penalties for those involved in road rage will stop the offenders from breaking the law. Persistent police vigils against drunken driving and other similar offences, must be hiked 24/7. Zero tolerance policy for any road rage offence should also be ensued, and perpetrators must be booked instantly giving them no time to excuse.

Road Rage is a criminal offence and the law enforcement agencies must deal with offenders strictly. It is also the moral obligation of any driver, to display maturity and concern for the safety of others. We should resist from venting our own frustration and stress onto other poor unsuspecting road users or drivers. Life is much precious, more than the issues those occupy our mind. Extreme caution and care must be exercised while driving/riding on road, avoiding arrogance and negligence, as it might have fatal consequences.

Driving is an involving activity and people experience many negative emotions especially if they are experiencing a traffic jam or if other drivers are acting inconsiderately. This might result in road rage, a condition caused by annoyance and that often results in aggression on the road. Road rage increases the probability of a driver committing traffic offences or even risking the lives of other road users. Stricter laws should therefore be passed to discourage people from engaging in road rage.

Road rage causes aggressive driving which may result in fatal accidents. When a driver experiences road rage, he/she may engage in reckless driving in an effort to retaliate or frustrate the other driver. Some of these aggressive driving includes following other vehicles too closely and switching lanes at random and without indicating.

Some drivers drive at excessive speeds and ignore stoplights because of road rage. Such behaviour increases the likelihood of accidents being caused by the driver who has road rage. Media reports reveal that the number of accidents caused by road rage is on the increase. This accidents are not only restricted to the drivers on the road. The lives of people not directly involved in the confrontation such as cyclists and pedestrians are also jeopardized by road rage.

Road rage leads to distractions on the road as the driver focuses on activities such as verbal arguments with other drivers. In some instances of road rage, drivers engage each other in verbal insults or make rude hand gestures at each other. I have seen drivers stick their hands outside their windows as they engage other drivers in intense arguments.

As they are doing this, their attention is not on the road. This is an important consideration since drivers are required to demonstrate high levels of alertness to the road and their surroundings at all times. This distraction caused by road rage increases the chances of causing an accident as the drivers focus less on the road.

Road rage can cause physical fights between drivers with bad results. The high frustration experienced during road rage can cause drivers to physically attack each other. Because of the great anger felt, the physical violence can lead to severe consequences. For example, there are cases where the injuries inflicted on a driver lead to assault charges being made against the aggressive driver. A driver therefore risks having a criminal record because of damages inflicted because of road rage.

In addition to the annoyance caused to other road users, road rage causes disturbance to businesses that are near the road. Road rage is often characterized by loud yelling by the drivers involved. Other drivers engage in unnecessary honking in an attempt to get the attention of the other drivers or to annoy them.

I have encountered this disruption at my favourite cafe, which happens to be near a road. The noise caused because of road rage often spoils the atmosphere at the cafe. Road rage disrupts the activities of nearby businesses, which have to deal with all the noise being generated.

Increases in the cases of road rage have made our roads more unsafe than they were in the past. This paper has argued that stricter laws should be put in place to help discourage this behaviour. To support this claim, a discussion of some of the negative causes of road rage has been made. Every safety-minded citizen should support strict legislation against road rage in order to make the roads safe for everyone.

INTRODUCTION ‘ On the Rule of the Road ‘ is a famous and amusing essay by A.G. Gardiner. In this essay “The Rule Of The Road.” Gardiner strikes the bull ‘s eye when he declares that, in order to preserve the freedoms of all, it is necessary to curtail everyone’s freedoms. He points out what constitutes true liberty. Freedom and liberty have become the watchwords of today’s society and every action taken is in the interests of personal freedom. Liberty, both human and political, has acquired tremendous significance in the contemporary world of constructed social and political anarchy.

SUMMARY of The Rule of The Road

The essay starts with an amusing anecdote of a fat old lady walking down a busy street in Petrograd in the middle of the road. The traffic was, of course, confused and there followed a traffic block. When someone pointed out to her that pedestrians had to walk on footpaths, her answer was intriguing. She answered that she has the freedom to walk wherever she likes. Nothing can be said against this because it is a public road.

The author, busy the next paragraph, goes on to clarify the boundaries of personal liberty. He says these days people are liberty – drunk. On this point, the reader can not but agree with the author as we see today that everyone wants individual freedom. Over the course of time, the problem has become more acute and fighting for freedom begins early when children are very young. Independence and dependence took on many colours and shades.

According to Gardiner, sacrifice seems to be the foundation of liberty because “in order that the liberties of all may be preserved, the liberties of everybody must be curtailed.” He gives the example of traffic police at a busy junction. The policeman may seem like a nuisance at first, but later we realize he’s actually a blessing. If everyone were driving wherever and whenever they wanted there would be utter chaos and no one could reach anywhere. So in a sense, in order to make the neighbours, a reality neighbours liberty is restricted.

The author introduces freedom as a social contract not a personal. He says it’s an adaptation. If our freedom does not interfere with others, we can do as we please. He gives many instances where we do what we like to wear, what to eat, which religion to follow, which author to prefer, and many others.

We rule over a kingdom where we have all the freedom, but when we come into contact with the freedom of other people, both parties will have to restrict their own free lives. For this again he gives the instance of playing the Trombone. If he wishes to play it at midnight he will have to leave to the Everest or else his family and neighbours will object.

The author tells the reader that there are a lot of people in this world and adjustment is the key to liberty.

Gardiner in this bewitching essay “The Road Rule” points out what constitutes true liberty. These days, even among small children, personal freedom or individual liberty is a very familiar concept. Gardiner has dealt with this subject almost prophetically in a diplomatic and mature way by offering a solution to today’s ‘ liberty – drunk ‘ mentality. Gardiner tells us that there will often be times when we must “submit to a curtailment of private liberty” if we want to live in a social order in which we really have liberty. So what he says may seem somewhat paradoxical. He says that in order to make our liberty a reality, we must give up some of our freedom.

The idea of personal liberty as a social contract by Gardiner reflects the idea of ‘ social contract ‘ by the philosopher John Locke. Locke is one of the thinkers closest to the ‘ social contract ‘ idea. This idea says we are giving up some of our smaller freedoms so we can live in a society together. In return for doing so, our truly important rights are protected by society. Gardiner is trying to make this one major point in this essay.

Literally, when Gardiner refers to the “road rule,” he’s talking about the rules that tell you what you can do on the road. He refers to the anecdote of the Russian woman walking down the middle of the road and causing problems with traffic. That woman did not follow the rules telling us what we could do on the roads. But here too, there is a figurative meaning. Gardiner uses traffic laws as a metaphor for the rules that make society work (often unwritten and informal) and create community and solidarity in society.

The main point of this essay is that people need to consider how their actions affect others, not just what they want to do themselves, and how they affect society. The rules of the road in this sense are rules of politeness and altruism. They are rules like “do not play your trombone too loudly or at the wrong time” or “do not have loud public places conversations.”

The author concludes the essay by saying that both anarchist and socialist must be a judicious mix. We need to preserve individual liberty as well as social freedom. It is in the small matter of behaviour in observing the rule of the road, we pass judgment on ourselves and declare that we are civilized or uncivilised.

Rule of the Road Summary

“Rule of the Road” is an essay by one of the greatest International essayist A.G. Gardiner who wrote mostly under a pseudonym “Alpha of the Plough”. The essay is preceded by “ All About A Dog” as the two together convey the great message that laws are and should always be constituted for the welfare, wellbeing, and convenience of the general public. Laws need to be observed and followed in spirit rather than letter. However, some laws should be and can be winked at when the need arises.

Laws are categorized as ones to be observed and followed at all costs. Rule of the road needs to be and should at all costs be followed strictly to ensure every body’s safety; to avoid chaos and confusion.

Breach of this rule is sure to result in loss of life, terrific inconvenience to all and all resulting derailing entire Social fabric. There are other laws like one’s choice of dressing at home, one’s hobbies and the like, one can and does enjoy a lot of freedom in this regard.

The essay bears upon its reader that he/she should consider others convenience superior to his/her own. Everybody has the right to live according to his/her will and one is free in most of the matters of life but everyone should remember that his/her freedom ends where another person’s freedom starts that

is why it is said that “you are free to walk down a street revolving your stick but your freedom ends where another person’s nose begins”. In short, it lays base, the fact that there is nothing like “absolute freedom” and that everyone should be contented with the curtailment of liberty in order to enjoy a happy, safe, fear-free social life which ushers in greater liberty though indirectly.

In Albert Como’s words “ you cannot be happy when all around you are sad”, you cannot even smile when you are surrounded by gloomy and sullen faces. Our joys and sorrows are determined not only by our personal conditions but mostly by the content of joy and sorrow experienced by people around us.

Thus when people around us are free in their private affairs, we also can have a similar amount of freedom and that is possible only when we follow laws of the society in every walk of life; when we conduct ourselves according to the norms set by our societies.

• Recently an argument over removing a scooter from a particular place resulted in road rage. A college student was beaten with sticks and hit with an iron road owing to this issue. He incurred serious injuries.
• People in Delhi are so blinded by the power of their money and links with affluent people that they do not even hesitate thrashing the police officials. Two traffic policemen were recently beaten by a group of people as they issued a challan to a minor riding a bike.

These are only few examples. A number of other such road rage cases take place in the city each day.

The reasons for road rage in the aforementioned cases are extremely petty and do not call for such an aggressive behaviour. Besides, even if the issue is big people must report the problem to the traffic police officials and get it sorted through the right channel rather than misbehaving and indulging in heinous behaviour on the road. Reasons of Road Rage

It is an understandable fact that aggressive driving varies with age, gender and other factors. Drivers between the age group of 20 to 40 are more likely to involve in tailgating, honking and abusing other drivers/riders or pedestrians on road. Younger drivers on the other hand are more likely to involve in over speeding, racing and overtaking an unsuspected driver or rider. Also, women are much less likely to get involve in Road Rage than men.

Reasons for Road Rage however could be personal or psychological, depending on the situation. The aggression that a driver displays on road could have resulted from a bad personal experience, anguish, distress, frustration or sometimes depression. A burden to reach on time and a mind occupied by stress and fear is a perfect ingredient for Road Rage.

Alcohol also plays a significant role in triggering the incidents of Road Rage, as it impairs one’s ability to think rationally and make correct judgments. A driver under the influence of alcohol is most likely to initiate road rage and compromise his as well as other’s safety.

Adolescent drivers below the permissible age limit for driving are most likely to involve in mindless racing, over speeding and performing stunts. These acts not only constitute gross traffic rules violation, but also seriously threaten the life and safety of other road users.

Solutions to Road Rage

1) Exercise Self Control

The basic rule to nip any incident of Road Rage in bud is – don’t provoke, neither get provoked. If you are late for job, stressed out and struggling in traffic and a driver suddenly tries to move ahead, blocking your way. Don’t get enraged as it would only escalate the situation leading to fatal consequences. Keep calm and let him move, maintaining your dignity. Similarly, whatever the situation may be, you should never provoke other drivers or passengers.

2) Don’t Drink and Drive

Driving under influence of alcohol is the most significant causes leading to Road Rage. Alcohol interprets with one’s ability to think, judge and make decisions apart from instilling over confidence and aggressive behaviour. While driving under the influence of alcohol you are most likely to provoke, insult and yell at other drivers. It would be a great decision to let the chauffer drive the car while you relax in the back seat.

3) Don’t Honk too Much

Honking too much of horn might be provocative to other drivers and perceived as a challenge, more so if they are caught in a traffic jam or stressed over something else. So avoid honking unnecessarily and understand that everyone is in a hurry as you are and there is a need to exercise patience.

4) Don’t Stop

Don’t stop your vehicle if confronted by a rogue driver. In case if you are forced to stop, make sure that you stay inside the securely locked vehicle, until help arrives. Always, no matter what, avoid an argument and confrontation, as it would only further escalate the situation, resulting in harmful consequences.

5) Stricter Penalty

Stricter punishments and penalties for those involved in road rage will stop the offenders from breaking the law. Persistent police vigils against drunken driving and other similar offences, must be hiked 24/7. Zero tolerance policy for any road rage offence should also be ensued, and perpetrators must be booked instantly giving them no time to excuse.

Road Rage is a criminal offence and the law enforcement agencies must deal with offenders strictly. It is also the moral obligation of any driver, to display maturity and concern for the safety of others. We should resist from venting our own frustration and stress onto other poor unsuspecting road users or drivers. Life is much precious, more than the issues those occupy our mind. Extreme caution and care must be exercised while driving/riding on road, avoiding arrogance and negligence, as it might have fatal consequences.

Are E.V.s Too Quiet and ‘Boring’?

Re “ Electric Cars Are Boring ,” by Ezra Dyer (Opinion guest essay, April 13):

If E.V.s are boring, I guess I am OK with being bored. As an E.V. owner, I no longer have to stop at the gas station to fill up in all kinds of (Chicago) weather. No more oil changes, no more antifreeze concerns, no muffler or fuel pump problems. Boring is good.

No key or fob to carry, and I can preheat or precool my E.V. in various types of inclement weather.

Now for full disclosure. I bought my first E.V. 10 years ago when I was 73. I am now at the age where simpler (boring) is better. I still drive my grandson’s stick shift from time to time, but find it requires too much effort.

I was wondering if Mr. Dyer would like to go back to the horse and buggy. Just think of the road noise and the sound of real horses.

The slowdown in E.V. sales is not because they are boring. It’s because they are 1) too expensive; 2) take too long to charge; 3) don’t go far enough on a single charge.

I will happily buy a medium-size S.U.V. E.V. when it goes 500 miles on a five-minute charge and costs about the same as the hybrid version. Until then I will settle for the Toyota RAV4 hybrid.

Sitting on the back deck of my house, I can hear the faint roar of traffic from the town center, about a mile away. I console myself that when more people are driving E.V.s, quiet and the sweet cacophony of bird song will prevail.

Now, Ezra Dyer tells us that E.V. manufacturers are designing speaker systems that will mimic the sound of “loud exhaust” because E.V.s are too boring.

What’s next, E.V.s equipped to spew the nostalgia-inducing “not entirely unpleasant” smell of gas, oil and diesel?

The genius of human invention never fails to amaze and horrify.

What an unexpected and incredibly refreshing surprise to see the essay on electric cars by Ezra Dyer, a Car and Driver columnist. As a longtime Car and Driver subscriber and past and present owner of three Alfa Romeos, I agree wholeheartedly with his observations.

And given the fact that the Porsche 911 GT3 is one of the most coveted cars by my 25-year-old son, there is hope for the next generation. We just need the car manufacturers to listen to the roar.

Re “ Living With a Stranger Is Hard. College Students Should Try It ,” by Pamela Paul (column, April 23):

I had the unique privilege of having roommates for my first two years of college who were radically different from me. I learned an awful lot because of the experience. But there was plenty I wish I hadn’t too.

The move to college is hard enough — academically, socially, mentally — that sharing that with another person places a needless burden on new students.

Ms. Paul is quite right that students benefit from learning from those around them, and schools should emphasize this in the classroom. But if there’s one place that ought to be sacred and free from the trials of starting college, it should be one’s room.

When I arrived at the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a freshman in 1972 as a Jewish New Yorker in a distant land, I met my new roommate, a Muslim from the Philippines. Two people could not have been more different. And it worked out magically.

While we have lost touch over the years, I still remember his glowing smile and warmth and am glad we were selected as roommates. It helped me to grow and appreciate people from vastly different backgrounds.

Randomness in roommate selection can generate growth and learning, which is what I always thought college is supposed to do.

Over the past 15 years of having school-age kids, I have been deeply frustrated by how our schools have adopted technology without enough scrutiny. It is depressing to realize how many hours my kids are required to spend in front of the computer screen daily — and all without any body of evidence pointing to its positive effect on learning.

How I dreamed about running the iPad over with my van after four years of my high schooler reading everything — even novels! — on his device.

Though I’ve heard noble rationales for tech in the classrooms — “It will save the trees!” — I agree with Ms. Grose that schools need to re-evaluate what tech companies decide the schools need.

Not only are standardized tests at every level revealing faltering learning outcomes, but the human-to-human interaction is also clearly suffering the most. Out with Google Slides; in with teaching!

Re “ How Do I Talk to My Son About a War I Don’t Understand? ,” by Sasha Vasilyuk (Opinion guest essay, April 28):

The war in Ukraine is not “Russia’s betrayal,” as Ms. Vasilyuk writes, but Russia’s business as usual. For generations, Moscow has violently suppressed the freedoms of surrounding nations.

Rather than withhold unpleasant truths, Russian parents must teach their children what Ukrainian, Polish or Latvian children learn from theirs: Historically Russia is an aggressor.

Russia’s imperialism relies on the unquestioned belief among countless ordinary Russians that their state has a virtuous right to dominate its neighbors. Without much hard work by parents and teachers, Russia’s noxious record will continue unchallenged.

Re “ Democrats See Water as Issue to Win Over Rural Arizona Voters ” (news article, April 24):

This article points out the difficulty that Democrats face in winning over conservative voters. For these desert communities, water is a life and death issue. But even though they admit that Republican policies hurt them and Democratic policies help them, these people will vote for Donald Trump.

And it’s not as if they don’t realize which side is which. They may agree that on this crucial issue the Democrats are right and are helping them, and the Republicans are wrong and are hurting them, but it doesn’t matter. They will still vote for Mr. Trump. There could be no clearer example of people voting directly against their own interests.

If nothing else, this discouraging story shows how much stronger is the fear of migrants, of change, of big government — all abstract fears really — than the drastic reality staring these people in the face.

VOVCHANSK, Ukraine — Moscow’s forces captured five villages in a renewed ground assault in northeastern Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday, and Associated Press journalists in the city of Vovchansk described multiple buildings destroyed after Russian airstrikes and barrages of Grad rockets.

Ukrainian officials didn’t confirm whether Russian had taken the villages, which lie in a contested “gray zone” on the border of Ukraine’s Kharkiv region and Russia.
