Are you a teaching professional with a demanding schedule, who needs to balance work and family with higher education? The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) degree is offered fully online and is a part-time program for teachers seeking professional development and career advancement. Skills you will learn include: designing and implementing comprehensive school activity programs; creating evidence-based curriculum and instructional models in physical education and sport; integrating instructional technology in the gymnasium, classroom and sports arena; and implementing physical activity programs for school-aged children.

The curriculum is aligned with advanced teaching standards (Professional Knowledge, Practice and Leadership) established by the Society for Health and Physical Educators.

The online courses in this program are taught by faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in their fields. This is a non-licensure program in West Virginia, however, and does not provide initial teaching certification in physical education as it is based on national advanced teaching standards. Prior to enrolling in this program, students who are seeking a pathway to an initial teaching license are encouraged to check with their state departments of education to see if the plan of study meets their requirements for an alternative certification pathway (see the WVDE Alternative Certification Program as an example).

Online Physical Education Teacher Education Admission Requirements

Applicants should hold a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. They should have access to youth (children and adolescents) in school-based physical education or community physical activity/sports settings throughout the duration of the program for course assignments and follow-up application tasks.

Students may be admitted provisionally with a GPA of 2.75 or lower; however, provisional students must earn a 3.0 in the first 9 hours of coursework to continue in the program.

Hudnall, from White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., explains a typical day at school.

"I arrive at 7:15 a.m. to prep the gymnasium for an exciting lesson and greet students in the hall. My first class starts at 8 a.m. I take attendance, we do warm up laps to music and play a high energy game to get the heart pumping,” she said. “Then we get into the lesson/skill that I am teaching. I instruct K-5 all day for 45 minutes each, with my last class ending at 2:45."

Hudnall suggests that if incoming students are uncertain about whether to enroll in the PETE online program, they should take the leap.

"I learned so much. I was able to incorporate things I learned right away. The professors are extremely helpful and want to see that you have an understanding and succeed," she said.

As a true supporter of sports, Hudnall says that she is a huge soccer fan.

"WVU Women’s Soccer team is my favorite."

Hudnall was nominated for the award by school staff. After reviewing applications, the Board of Education selected winners for Elementary Teacher of the Year, Secondary Teacher of the Year and an overall Greenbrier County Teacher of the Year. Hudnall plans to submit additional information to be considered for the West Virginia Teacher of the Year award.

The first step to a career in physical education is to get a degree. Since a bachelor’s degree is typically the minimum requirement for becoming employed as a PE teacher, the majority of programs are found at the bachelor’s level. PE programs are often grouped with kinesiology, exercise science, or health studies degrees. Many bachelor’s in education programs offer a focus (also called specialization, concentration, specialty, or emphasis) in physical education, preparing teachers to become certified or endorsed in that area.

Like most other teachers, physical education teachers must become certified educators in their state before they can begin working in the public school system. While about 75% of all schools in the US are public and require certification, some private schools may not require certification for teachers. 2

Ohio State University’s (OSU) College of Education and Human Ecology offers a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) in Sports Coaching, Recreation, and Physical Education with an optional specialization in Physical Education Teacher Education that leads to becoming a licensed physical education teacher in preschool through grade 12. The program focuses on how to adapt physical education resources for children and adolescents at the elementary, middle, and high school levels as well as students with disabilities. Graduates will be able to help children develop their motor skills from a young age and encourage them to build a healthy lifestyle including physical activity. Field experience working in physical education in schools of all levels is required, and in the on-campus adapted activities lab, students will be able to work with children with disabilities. Core requirement courses include Concepts of Fitness and Wellness, Mental Performance for Youth Sports, Coaching Effectiveness, and Sociocultural Issues in Sport, Recreation & Physical Education. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for admission into the major and 120 total hours are required to graduate.

Purdue University

Purdue University’s Department of Health and Kinesiology (HK) offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Health and Kinesiology (which recently replaced the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Athletic Training) that prepares students to attend graduate school or professional school or to be sport instructors, personal trainers, and fitness coordinators. The BA uses experiential learning such as a hands-on lab, a departmental study abroad opportunity, and research experience with professors. Coursework is taken in chemistry, physics, biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, exercise physiology, applied clinical anatomy, and public health studies. Students may choose an optional concentration in Clinical Exercise Physiology, which replaced the school’s Applied Exercise and Health degree, and prepares students to be entry-level exercise specialists and/or pass the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C) exam or the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) Exam. Purdue also offers a master’s degree and a PhD in health and kinesiology.

University of Texas at San Antonio

The University of Texas at San Antonio awards the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Kinesiology with a Physical Education concentration to students who complete its 120-credit-hour program. Graduates obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain certification in teaching physical education from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Courses in individual activities, team sports, motor development, and exercise physiology provide students with a firm foundation in kinesiology for physical education instruction. In the final semester of study, students complete a student teaching field experience of full-day teaching in the certificate area sought, supplemented by seminars in teaching practice and related issues. Qualified students may enter the Department Honors program for opportunities for advanced study. A 15-credit hour certificate in Athletic Coaching can be added to the standard curriculum for students interested in coaching careers. The department also offers 18-credit hour minors in community health and wellness.

University of Vermont

At the University of Vermont, the Department of Education offers a teacher education program in physical education culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd). The 120-credit program requires coursework in general education as well as classes like Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Sport in Society, Exercise and Sport Science, Motor Skill Learning and Control, and the Philosophy of Coaching. The specialty courses are focused on “Moving and Learning” to provide a background to the field and students learn teaching skills that will allow them to work effectively with children of all ages. The program qualifies graduates to become licensed teachers in PreK through grade 12. The program includes real-world laboratory experiences in schools, and students can choose to pursue a concentration in Exercise and Sport Science and a Coaching minor. The University of Vermont also offers a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Preparation (PBTP) program for students who already have a bachelor’s degree and wish to become licensed as PreK-12 physical education teachers. Undergraduate minors in Coaching and Sports Management are also offered.

West Virginia University

West Virginia University (WVU) offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Physical Education and Kinesiology through its School of Sport Sciences. This degree program provides students with a comprehensive skill set in physical education and leads to state-level teaching certification at the elementary and/or secondary levels in both physical education and health education. Graduates may also find career opportunities in student health and athletic coaching. The professionally-oriented coursework includes learning across developmental levels and differing student populations for a well-rounded understanding of physical education. Courses are sequenced to provide an integrated learning experience. Students may also be interested in adding one of the school’s physical education minors to their degree plan, such as Adventure Sports Leadership, Athletic Coaching, Group Fitness, and Personal Training. George mason university.

George Mason University’s School of Kinesiology offers a fully-online Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Physical Education. Designed for current teachers in health and physical education with at least one year of experience, this M.Ed. degree includes core courses such as Education and Culture; Designing and Assessing Teaching and Learning; and Inquiry into Practice as well as concentration courses in Research Design and Statistical Reasoning; Curriculum and Assessment in Physical Education; and Mentoring and Supervising in Physical Education. Electives are also offered in Instructional Design; Advanced Exercise Physiology; Exercise and Sport Psychology; and more. A total of 30 credits are required for the degree, 12 of which are core courses and 18 of which are concentration courses. Coursework in the program is aligned with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and is designed to prepare future leaders in physical education.

Indiana Wesleyan University

Indiana Wesleyan University’s Transition to Teaching (TTT) program offers two pathways of interest to prospective physical education teachers: an endorsement in Physical Education or Health Education in grades P-12. To be eligible for admission, students must already hold a bachelor’s degree in any field. Out-of-state candidates should check with their state’s board of education to see if this degree will meet certification requirements since the built-in licensure is for Indiana. All courses take place online, though students must complete field experiences and a student teaching semester within the state of Indiana. The program is designed to be completed in 18 to 24 months. Courses in the program include Educational Psychology and Diversity for Secondary Educators; Assessment and Learning Processes in the Secondary Classroom; and Secondary Teaching Methods and Resources. All education programs at Indiana Wesleyan University are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

State University of New York College at Cortland

The Physical Education Department at the State University of New York College at Cortland (SUNY Cortland) offers several programs in physical education, two of which are offered in a hybrid or online format. SUNY Cortland’s Master of Science in Education (MSEd) in Physical Education Leadership (PEL) is available in a fully-online format, aside from one two-week summer requirement that must be taken on campus. The MSEd in PEL prepares leaders and advocates for change in the profession and future physical educators employed in K-12 programs in New York and beyond. The program also prepares graduates for certification in New York State. SUNY Cortland also offers an MSEd program in Physical Education (PEC) with concentrations in Adapted Physical Education (ADPE) and Coaching Pedagogy (COAP); only the Coaching Pedagogy concentration can be taken in a hybrid format. The COAP concentration is taken over three consecutive summers and emphasizes coaching and teaching physical education, research methods, and the application of technology. Related on-campus traditional programs include a Master of Science for Teachers (MST) in Physical Education and a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) in Physical Education with concentrations in Adapted Physical Education and Outdoor Adventure Education.

University of Arkansas

The University of Arkansas offers an online Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Physical Education that is designed for currently certified teachers. This 100% online teacher education program can be completed in two years by taking two courses each semester. The program is designed to provide advanced training in health and physical education, with courses such as Professional Issues in Physical Education and Sport; Supervision in Physical Education; and Sport Skill Assessment and Instructional Strategies. An independent study capstone allows students to develop an in-depth research project on a topic of their choosing within physical education. To be considered for admission, students must have a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology or a related field and a GPA of at least 3.0. The M.Ed. in Physical Education at the University of Arkansas is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Western State Colorado University

Western State Colorado University (WSCU) offers a fully-online teacher licensure program designed for prospective first-time teachers in Colorado who already hold a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology or a related field. During a one-year residency, students intern under a mentor teacher for 24 hours per week while taking online courses towards a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Physical Education. During the residency, students progress towards becoming an independent lead teacher and will teach full-time for the final five weeks of this segment of the program. Following initial licensure after the first year, students may elect to continue studying online to earn a further 16 credits to complete the master’s degree in education. In addition to a K-12 endorsement in physical education, this program can lead to endorsements in a range of other subject areas. In total, the program requires 33 credit hours and two years to complete. Courses include Creating Effective Online Learning Environments; Curriculum Development and Assessment; and Research and Critical Inquiry for Leaders.

• National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) : An organization dedicated to providing leadership and resources to high school athletic coaches and the programs they run.
• Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) : National organization with over 200,000 professionals in health and physical education as members that provides the National Standards for K-12 Physical Education that offers guidelines for physical education programs in the United States.

Our M.A. in Curriculum & Teaching in Physical Education focuses on the area of movement sciences called physical education and culture.

Our work examines how sociocultural, political, and economic forces have an impact on the body, school PE, physical activity, fitness, and health. In today’s context of public health, we are particularly interested in understanding how health disparities, structural inequalities, and the materiality of the socio-educational and economic resources young people have access to in the local community contexts of their daily lives inform their physicality development and health.

Physical culture is about body movement and performance in spaces such as PPE class, sport, health/fitness, dance and more.

Physical Cultural Studies (PCS) encompasses the diversely focused field of scholarly work which is united by a commitment toward engaging varied dimensions or expressions of (in)active bodies or physical culture (Andrews & Silk, 2011). In this physical culture is understood as “cultural practices in which the physical body – the way it moves, is represented, has meanings assigned to it, and is imbued with power – is central” (Vertinsky, quoted in Silk & Andrews, 2011) Physical Cultural Studies is closely related to the fields of sport sociology, cultural studies, sociology of the body, body culture studies, queer studies and disability studies.

UW-Superior’s exercise science program provides the knowledge and skills to prepare you for a successful career in clinical exercise physiology, health and fitness fields. The program also lays the groundwork for entrance into graduate school for careers in exercise physiology, athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician’s assistant and many other allied health careers. Program coursework provides basic and advanced knowledge of the structure and function of the human body as well as applied areas such as exercise physiology, pathophysiology, kinesiology and motor learning. Hands-on experiential learning is woven into coursework throughout the program.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of experiential learning opportunities such as internships and Academic Service-Learning. We recommend students earn NCCA-approved certifications and training from accredited organizations, such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the American Council on Exercise (ACE), among others. Exercise Science majors can double major and also receive a degree in Public Health. An internship that aligns with career goals is required.

The Health and Human Performance Department houses the Kessler Exercise Physiology Laboratory, a multifunctional exercise physiology lab where students learn and perform research and practice techniques related to their coursework and career goals.

Our Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health degree prepares graduates to become competent, problem-solving, and innovative professionals able to design, deliver, and assess health and physical education instruction for grades Pre-K through 12.

There are two tracks to follow, Virginia licensure through the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Health and Physical Education P-12 and this non-licensure degree. The non-licensure track will give you the same great training as the B.Ed. program but with additional training in coaching in lieu of the student teaching and time spent working as a student aide.

Professionals seeking a master’s degree in physical education and coaching can benefit from UWF’s online master’s in sports performance and coaching. You’ll learn how to lead individuals in areas of coaching (collegiate, high school, youth), physical activity, physical education, fitness, wellness and health. Through the development of subject-specific pedagogy, you will become a leader who can successfully and effectively plan, motivate, communicate, explain, connect, demonstrate and reflect.

You’ll be guided through the curriculum by instructors who are dedicated to your individualized learning. Coursework offers personalized assignments — you’ll use the challenges you face in your current position or interests to complete work and benefit from professional feedback regarding your outcomes.

Systematic Observation in Sport and Physical Activity

Students will learn to use a systematic approach to observe participants during teaching, coaching, and training. Emphasis will be on using published systematic observation instruments and the development of new instruments as objective tools for observation.

Advanced Management of Physical Activity Programs

This course will prepare students to effectively use current theory and administrative techniques to design and implement appropriate physical activity programs. Emphasis is placed on developing and implementing program plans.

Physical Activity Program Development

The aim of this course is to examine models and current research related to curriculum and program design in physical activity disciplines. This course will provide students with skills that will enable them to interpret, critique, evaluate, justify, and develop physical activity curricula and programs.

Leadership in Physical Activity and Sport

This course will assist students in developing knowledge and skills related to leadership in physical activity and sport settings. This course will provide students with the leadership skills that will enable them to examine, evaluate, create, and implement effective physical activity and sport programs.

Students who complete this course will gain the skills and knowledge to engage in meaningful research within sport and physical activity settings. Topics covered will include methods to design and implement effective quantitative and qualitative research projects in physical activity and sport settings.

Predictive Sport Performance Analytics

Using quantitative data collection and analysis procedures, students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to carefully analyze sport performance in an objective and data based manner. Students will also learn to use data to make effective recommendations and decisions to improve future sport performance at both the individual and team levels.

Analysis and Supervision in Sport and Physical Activity

This course prepares students to analyze and supervise teaching, training, and quality in physical activity disciplines.

Professional Issues in Physical Activity Disciplines

This course will assist students in understanding professional issues and concerns that are inherent parts of physical activity professions and to apply that understanding to professional participation and service contributions. Students will analyze and evaluate online professional information, critically analyze physical activity problems, critique and debate complex ethical problems within the field of physical activity, and articulate a sound philosophy for physical activity leadership.

Teaching and Motivation for Physical Activity Leaders

This course will lead students through the exploration of sport psychology research, particularly in areas that connect psychology and physical activity behavior. Students will connect theory to practice by integrating research and theory into logical coaching and teaching frameworks. Additional content will focus on how training actions impact performance and motivation.

Analysis of Research in Physical Activity Disciplines

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to various streams of research in physical activity domains and help them understand and critically analyze the quality of that research and its influence on professional activity.

The project in lieu of thesis is a project or activity that makes a significant contribution to the field(s) associated with physical education and human performance fields. Project ideas will be conceptualized and organized by the student and the course instructor. There is no set format and guidelines for each individual project will be determined by the nature of the topic and the guidance of the instructor. Students will be guided toward project completion over two semesters.

Advanced Strategies and Tactics of Sport Performance

Students completing this course will analyze, evaluate, and create strategic and tactical methods designed to produce success within sports settings.

Sport Promotion and Communication

Sport Promotion and Communication is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to effectively promote sport and physical activity programs using a variety of direct and indirect communication tools and procedures.

Fitness Trainers and Instructors

Undergraduate Program The academic program in physical education prepares individuals for a Bachelor of Science degree and for service as teachers in physical education. It leads to New York State Initial Certification for teaching physical education in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 with a concentration in human movement, sport, and exercise science. Post-Baccalaureate Initial Certificate This sequence of courses prepares students for the New York State Initial Certificate to teach Physical Education Pre-K–12. It is designed for individuals who have completed an undergraduate major other than in teacher preparation in physical education, and want to teach physical education. This program does not fulfill the requirements of the Master of Science in Education degree in physical education.

MSEd P​rogram

Professional Certificate A sequence of courses on the theoretical study of curriculum and teaching integrated with the substantive study of human movement and its professional application to educational and clinical practice. This program fulfills the requirements of the Masters of Science in Education degree in Physical Education. Only individuals with an New York State Initial Certificate are permitted to enter the program; all others must complete the Post- Baccalaureate Initial Certificate program to be eligible to enter the MSEd program.

Our program will help you navigate the urban school environment and New York City’s diverse student populations. Our graduates make up a large percentage of New York City’s P–12 physical education teachers. After graduation, you will be ready to step confidently into a classroom.

Major Description

Undergraduate physical education teacher education candidates are required to take courses in the following areas: skills and practice teaching physical activities and fitness, teaching methods, foundations of education, and anatomy and physiology classes that emphasize health and human movement. In the senior year, students complete comprehensive field experiences and in the final semester must complete student teaching with experiences across grade levels. Community partnerships with local schools and other organizations support our students developing the knowledge and proficiencies needed to work with New York City’s diverse student populations.

Graduates of our program make up a large percentage of New York City’s P–12 physical education teachers.

Kinesiology 3001 ,  3290 ,  3295 , and  4200W taken prior to fall 2022 are accepted as fulfilling the equivalent SEED courses.

Admission Requirements and Academic Standing

Students must have a GPA of 2.70 or higher based on a minimum of 30 credits in liberal arts and sciences to take Secondary Education  2001  and  2002 .

Students must have a B- in both Secondary Education  2001  and  2002  and a GPA of 2.75 or higher based on a minimum of 30 credits in liberal arts and sciences to continue to Secondary Education  3401 , and/or Secondary Education  3402 , and/or Secondary Education  3456 .

To take Secondary Education  3105 ,  3110 ,  3080 , students must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher, a B- or better in both Secondary Education  3401  and  3402 , and/or permission of the head of the program.

To take Secondary Education  4414  and  4415 , students must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher and permission of the head of the program.

Adolescence education (grades 7–12) and special subject programs are writing intensive.

This program qualifies students to apply for New York State initial certification in physical education for all grades (P–12).

All students accepted to the School of Education are required to submit fingerprint verification before signing up for most education classes. Fingerprint verification is required for work in New York City Department of Education schools if you already have fingerprint records or not. Follow these instructions .

Student Learning Outcomes

Candidates will:

• Demonstrate knowledge of their basic science core, including concepts of exercise physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and motor learning and development related to the performance and analysis of skillful movement.
• Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical constructs of the science core, and learning and development along with an understanding of historical, philosophical, and social perspectives of physical education.
• Know how to attain and maintain personal levels of health-related fitness and competence in a variety of physical activities and movement patterns.
• Know how to design short- and long-term developmentally appropriate lesson and unit plans that support the diverse learning needs of all students and address fitness, motor competence, and a variety of sport and physical activities.
• Know how to develop and implement content specific, progressive, and sequential instruction that leads to active and fair learning experiences for all students while maintaining a safe teaching/learning environment with maximum academic learning time for all students
• Know how to create and provide effective demonstrations, explanations, instructional cues, and feedback to support student learning.
• Know how to select or develop appropriate assessments that accurately measure the achievement of all students’ instructional settings.
• Know how to use assessment results and reflective practice to inform instruction, and maintain high standards for themselves and their students.

Complete the COEPS Educational Foundations Block ( EDFOUND 212 ,   EDFOUND 243 ,   EDFNDPRC 210 ,   SPECED 205 ) in order to be admitted to Professional Education ahead of taking Content Knowledge and Teaching Methods, and Field Work requirements.

UQ’s Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (Honours) educates the next generation of specialist health, sport and physical education teachers, and senior biology teachers.

It is the longest-running university-based physical education program in Australia, with more than 70 years of teaching, research and graduate excellence.

You'll learn how to help young people explore a range of sport and physical activities confidently and competently, and develop a lifelong love of being healthy and active.

Placements and work experience

You will undertake over 100 days of supervised practical teaching experience in a range of settings including primary, secondary and special needs schools. During your placements, you will have the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real life setting.

The practical teaching experience in third year of the program includes observing a primary school program for 5 days, participating as a staff member at a secondary school for at least 25 days and spending one day per week at a primacy school planning and implementing Health Sport and Physical Education (HPE) lessons. During the third year, you will also undertake sessional practical experiences (e.g. motor active clinic) as well as practical teaching experience.

During year 4, you are immersed in the life of a school for 12 weeks and in particular the HPE department. By week five of this placement, you will be teaching a full load in HPE and Junior Science.

Placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

I love sport, it has always been a facet of my life, and I wanted to share my passion with others and show them that PE can improve anyone’s quality of life. The major practicum experience challenged me to put my skills into practice and I enjoyed every moment.

This program has limited intake capacity.

Part-time study is available, however, semesters that include a placement must be studied full-time.

Prior to applying, applicants should ensure they will be able to meet the placement requirements .

For applicants who need to provide evidence of English proficiency, please note that this program requires a higher level of English language proficiency than the UQ minimum.

As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), applicants to Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria for selection . The process for assessing an applicant's non-academic capabilities is available on QTAC's website regarding ITE programs.

From 2017, commencing students are required to successfully meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) standards prior to graduation. Refer to Additional Costs under the 'Fees and Scholarships' section for further information.

The following advice has been provided from the Queensland College of Teachers for transferred students: If a student is admitted as a transfer student into an ITE program at a new university and they enrolled in their original ITE primary program prior to the implementation of the non-academic selection tool prerequisite, they are able transfer without meeting the requirement. If a student is being admitted into an ITE program as a new student, the prerequisite will need to be met.

Fitness - Fall 2024

Pe 1231 - group fitness instructor training.

This course provides step by step instruction on how to effectively lead group fitness classes, and, prepare you for the AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification. Topics covered will include class design, music interpretation and instructor skills, along with theoretical and practical application of exercise principles. By the end of this course, students will be able to lead a 40 minute fitness class in a choreographed or interval style which includes warm up, cardiovascular conditioning, group strength training, core conditioning, and cool-down. Successful completion of this course qualifies students to register for the Aerobic Instructor Apprenticeship, offered in the spring semester.

PE 1233 - Bootcamp

This course is designed as a modern military style workout program with an emphasis on both aerobic and anaerobic fitness. Each workout session will consist of stretching, warm-up calisthenics, cardio training, full body resistance training, core activation and cool down stretching. This is a high energy course that will teach students the importance of motivation, enthusiasm and teamwork while familiarizing them with total-fitness techniques and concepts. If you are ready to push yourself and train hard, Bootcamp is for you. Students of all fitness levels will benefit greatly from this course.

PE 1234 - Essentials of Personal Training

Pe 1235 - 8 o'clock rock.

This class combines the best of the Principals of Weight Training and Cardio Crazy to get your day off to a rocking and rolling great start. Students will use resistance and cardio equipment to create the perfect morning wake-up call.

PE 1237 - Yasaride

This class combines two wonderful activities, indoor cycling and yoga into a mindful stress reducing hour of fitness. The yoga portion will focus on full body stretching as well as areas that need more attention after cycling such as hamstrings, hips, and the spine.  The class will also include work on breath, alignment, and mindfulness in both the cycling and yoga portions of the class. The length of time for each activity will vary from class to class. 

PE 1238 - Barre

Barre is a high energy, low-impact, full body work out. You will target specific muscles using isolated exercises to sculpt your arms, legs and seat, all while keeping the focus on core and alignment. Although inspired by ballet and set to music, this is not a dance class. This course is an open-level format to help you build strength, improve posture and flexibility while creating long, lean muscles. 

PE 1241 - Mobility and Core Training

Mobility and stability are fundamental components of our daily movement. Whether you are highly active, not active at all, or somewhere in between, this course will teach you about these subtle yet critical details of exercise. Through various mobility and flexibility exercises, you will learn how to tune your muscles for optimal length-tension relationships, while at the same time learning core strengthening exercises to help counter faulty postures from long hours of sitting.

PE 1245 - Indoor Stationary Cycling

Based on the foundation of the Spinning® Program this indoor stationary cycling class combines basic cycling movements with motivational coaching, breathing awareness, and heart rate training. This non-impact, individually paced, cardiovascular fitness class is held in a fun environment with music that will move you! A great alternative to traditional group fitness classes.

PE 1246 - Open Gym Class

This Open Gym PE course offers an exclusive time and space to students who have previous experience with exercise. The Appel Fitness Center offers a wide variety of free weight and cardio equipment, and experience with this equipment is mandatory for this course. A CFC Personal Trainer will be on staff to supervise and assist students with their training, but independent exercise should be expected.

PE 1250 - Army ROTC Physical Training

Physical training is a key component to any personal development program. Training early and often allows one to get the day's workout out of the way, starting the day focused and relaxed, and increasing discipline throughout the semester. Physical training consists of early morning workouts with Army ROTC Cadets and Instructors, that focus on cardiovascular and muscular development, following a holistic workout to help achieve a strong core and heart.

PE 1260 - Cardio Kickboxing

Cardio-Kickboxing is a series of movements that consists of kicks, punches, and blocks done to music. It is similar to a typical aerobics class except the moves consist of martial arts techniques. Cardio-Kickboxing is a total body workout in its most complete form burning hundreds of calories and hour. No experience necessary.

PE 1261 - Fitness and Conditioning

Fitness and conditioning is designed to familiarize the student with several different forms of exercise. Facilities used include the track, the gymnasium and other places around campus. The components of physical fitness include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, general flexibility and agility. The course will offer activities that enhance each component and help the individual to design a personal conditioning program for future fitness and well-being.

PE 1262 - Fitness for Women

The design of this course includes both lecture and physical activity. Students are presented with a variety of topics and information that involves physical fitness and health. Each student will learn to design a fitness program that is geared toward her own interests and abilities. Topics include: nutrition, time management, relaxation techniques, and stress management. Activities will include aerobic dance, walking, jogging, weight training, flexibility exercises, relaxation and stress management routines, and yoga techniques.

PE 1265 - Wellness and Fitness

"Here's to a Healthier You" - A wellness experience for the busy student. This course will assess the student's physical fitness status, and overall lifestyle health habits. Strength training basics emphasize how to properly perform exercises for each of the major muscle groups of the body.  Program Planning, Nutrition and Stress Management are also presented. 

PE 1270 - Introduction to Jogging

Covers running and stretching techniques. It comprises a conditioning program with the objective to develop the capacity to run 3 miles after 12 weeks of training.

PE 1271 - Jogging Tours

This course is designed for the beginner to intermediate runner. Daily instruction will focus on running form and technique, as well as building aerobic capacity. Students should arrive to class prepared to run either indoors or outdoors.

PE 1272 - Walking Tours

A series of walking tours around the Cornell Campus and beyond. Class will meet regardless of weather, so please come prepared.

PE 1273 - Walking Meditation

This course combines walking and meditation, two life-enhancing activities that can help students create balance in their hectic lives. Walking is the optimum exercise for good health and meditation offers the opportunity to calm an active and busy mind. Drawing on the teachings from the Vietnamese Zen Buddist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, will involve meditating in motion.

UCF’s emergency management program ranks No. 1 in the nation, and programs in education and public affairs climbed in U.S. News & World Report ’s Best Graduate Schools rankings.

More than 9,000 UCF students enroll in UCF’s graduate programs to advance their careers or launch new ones. And many are thriving on campus and after graduation in programs ranked among the best in the nation.

U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCF’s exceptional faculty and graduate programs in its 2024 list of Best Graduate Schools. UCF’s emergency management program ranks No. 1 in the nation, and four programs rank in the top 25. Nine graduate programs placed in the top 50 nationally, including five in public affairs, three in education and one in health. U.S. News will release rankings for the engineering and medicine categories at a later date.

UCF Grads Shape Emergency Responses Nationwide

UCF has a proven track record in emergency management. The university’s Master of Emergency and Crisis Management program — which is offered the College of Community Innovation and Education — has climbed the rankings over seven consecutive years. The homeland security program and its faculty researchers enable students to navigate increasingly complex manmade and natural disasters, while learning from past disasters to improve their preparedness and response in the future.

Graduates of the program go on to become leaders in directing and implementing emergency responses in Florida and throughout the country, including in Boston and Washington, D.C. They are saving lives, helping communities prepare as well as possible to navigate disasters, and putting into practice the lessons they learned from outstanding faculty who contribute to  national research and regional solutions related to crises .

“Our students are equipped to assist communities and organizations in every phase of emergency management — from preparedness and mitigation to response and recovery,” says  Claire Connolly Knox, professor in UCF’s School of Public Administration.

UCF students who have graduated from the nonprofit management program have gone on to make a big impact by helping communities in Florida and beyond. In one example, more than 12 years ago, program graduate Eric Camarillo ’16 ’19MNM launched faith-based nonprofit organization SALT Outreach Inc. in Central Florida to help provide services to the homeless, including mobile shower trailers, laundry, clothing, haircuts, mail services and help with employment. SALT has grown to more than 30 staff members who help hundreds of people every day.

“Throughout the School of Public Administration, our faculty, staff and advisory boards have worked hard to ensure we are offering students in Central Florida, across the country and around the globe a world-class, innovative education,” says Doug Goodman, professor and school director. “We are honored to be recognized as leaders in emergency management, nonprofit management, public leadership management and public finance and budgeting, fields that are critical to the health and well-being of our citizens and the success of our communities.”

The Best Graduate Education Schools category includes graduate-level educator preparation and advancement programs, such as teacher education, school counseling and psychology, educational leadership, and curriculum and instruction, all offered through the College of Community Innovation and Education. The college offers graduate students numerous opportunities to collaborate closely with expert faculty, from receiving mentorship and support in research and scholarship to engaging in robust internships and field experiences with school district, nonprofit and agency partners. Some faculty members also lead federally funded projects that offer tuition assistance and prepare students to work with students in high-need schools.

UCF’s continued rise has also drawn praise from other outlets:

• In February, U.S. News & World Report released its best online program national rankings, which placed UCF tied at No. 7 in the nation for best online bachelor’s programs. Of the 14 UCF national rankings from U.S. News , six online programs made the top 10, two made the top 15 and three were in the top 50. UCF has ranked in the top 20 overall Best Online Programs for the past seven years.
• In March, The Princeton Review and PC Gamer recognized UCF’s game design programs among the best in the world. The graduate Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy is ranked No. 1 in the world for the fourth time in five years. The undergraduate game design program, Games and Interactive Media (GaIM) in UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media, achieved its highest ranking ever, advancing to No. 5 in the world.
• Sports Business Journal named Orlando the No. 1 Best Sports Business City for event hosting, including the NBA, Orlando City and Orlando Pride Soccer, the nation’s premier tennis center, college football bowl games, the NFL Pro Bowl, U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, the Arnold Palmer Invitational — and, of course, the UCF Knights. With its inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference in 2023, UCF has skyrocketed to unprecedented success as the youngest Power Four program in the country. With one of the country’s  top graduate sports business programs , UCF has also provided a pipeline of talented graduates to some of the nation’s biggest sports brands.

Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Rises to New Heights in 2024 U.S. News and World Report Rankings

Duke University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, a beacon of academic excellence, continues to rise in the U.S. News and World Report Rankings. In the 2024 rankings, Duke DPT has reached a significant milestone, proudly securing the  No. 6  spot in the country.

The Duke DPT program celebrates a 100 percent employment rate and a 99 percent ultimate Board pass rate of its graduates . It innovatively prepares the next generation of clinicians, leaders, and teachers.
