Porsche 992 GT3 RS – 525 hp, DRS, huge downforce

Porsche 992 GT3 RS – 525 hp, DRS, huge downforce

The rumor mill has been bubbling for a long time, but now it’s here. On August 17, 2022, Porsche presented the 992 GT3 RS to the world public. Andreas Preuninger, Head of GT Vehicles at Porsche, provided detailed information on the development direction of the new trackday king from Zuffenhausen.

The development of the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS was inspired by the 911 RSR and GT3R racers

According to Preuninger, the focus in the Porsche 992 spearhead’s development was even more on aerodynamics and chassis. After the normal GT3 with its newly designed double wishbone front axle was already a real revolution, Porsche’s GT department went even further. Directly from the Porsche 911 RSR, the idea of the central-radiator was adopted for the first time in a production Porsche. Gone are the days of three radiators mounted in the front bumper.

This trick has made it possible to use the space in the front for aerodynamic purposes. The so-called boomerang fins allow cooling air to be directed outward so that, for example, the rear wing located above the edge of the roof receives airflow as efficiently as possible. Added to this are active aerodynamics at the front and rear with DRS (Drag-Reduction-System), as in Formula 1. At the push of a button, all aero elements are flattened to improve acceleration. Overall, the Porsche 992 GT3 RS produces twice as much downforce as its predecessor and three times as much as the current 992 GT3.

On the engine side, the familiar 4.0 litre naturally aspirated flat-six is used. With new camshafts, it produces 525 hp. Like its predecessor, this makes it the perfect basis for trackdays and club racing. With its extremely fast response and what is currently probably the best sounding engine in a production vehicle, it leaves nothing to be desired in the Cayman GT4 RS as well.

The aerodynamics are very reminiscent of GT3 racing cars

In addition to active aerodynamics, the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS has a whole range of aerodynamic changes. The so-called louvers on the front fender and the air intakes in the rear fender are not entirely new. At the front, a splitter at the bottom of the bumper separates the air into overflow and underflow.

Porsche 992 GT3 RS on track

Sideblades are now fitted in front of the front wheels. They direct the air flowing frontally onto the car past the outside of the wheel. Behind the front wheels there are also so-called retracts. This reduces the air pressure in the wheel housing. This intake concept is also used on the rear wheel.

Even the chassis of the Porsche 992 GT3 RS had to be aerodynamically adapted

It’s quite impressive. Porsche builds a road car with a more or less regular body. The chassis and suspension are therefore not open to the wind at all. Nevertheless, Preunigner’s team revised the suspension for aerodynamic reasons.

Even the suspension comes in for aerodynamic attention. Because the wheel arches of the new 911 GT3 RS are subject to powerful airflows, the components of the double-wishbone front axle are designed with teardrop-shaped profiles. These aerodynamically efficient links increase downforce on the front axle by around 40 kg at top speed and are otherwise only used in high-end motorsport applications. Because of the wider track (29 millimetres wider than the 911 GT3), the double-wishbone front axle links are also correspondingly longer.  Porsche Newsroom

This ultimate driving machine from Zuffenhausen is rounded off by all kinds of electrical helpers. The chassis can now be adjusted electrically. Even the locking effect of the differential can be adjusted via a rotary switch on the steering wheel. The icing on the cake is an anti-dive system. This drastically prevents the body from pitching when braking. It also ensures that aerodynamic downforce remains stable under braking.

Performance stats of the Porsche 992 GT3 RS

3.2 seconds from 0-100 km/h, 296 km/h top speed, significantly shorter-ratio 7-speed PDK, 1,450 kilograms. These are the key figures for the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS. At the front, the 525 hp is kept in check by 408 mm brake discs (optionally even 410 mm PCCB) and six-piston aluminum fixed calipers. The rear axle brakes are largely identical to those on the 992 GT3.

presentation porsche 992 gt3 rs

The new GT3 RS comes with a number of racing extras for trackday use in the form of the Club Sport package, which is available at no extra charge: e.g. a six-point seat belt for the driver, a steel roll cage and a fire extinguisher. Meanwhile, the Weissach package, which is available at extra cost, offers even more. Body parts made of visible carbon (e.g. front, roof and rear wing) and a carbon roll cage again reduce weight. The axle stabilizers and coupling rods are then also manufactured in the sinfully expensive lightweight material. To add a tactile feedback, the steering wheel features magnetic shifters with a very crisp pressure point.

The GT department’s latest creation is available to order now for a base price of around 230,000 euros. Good things come to those who get a slot at their Porsche dealer…

Porsche 911 GT3 RS First Drive Review : The Force Awakens

Porsche 992 911 GT3 RS First Drive Review : The Force Awakens

Silverstone, UK  -  When the invite from Porsche came some months back, we were told, “You’ll probably miss the Singapore Grand Prix… but it’s for the launch of the 911 GT3 RS.” Naturally, there’s only one answer to an invitation like that.

If you’re wondering how we replied, maybe you’re not as big a petrolhead as you think you are!

After all, the next best thing to watching 20 cars tear around a F1 race-track… is actually tearing around a F1 race-track yourself!

And that’s how we found ourselves at the home of the British Grand Prix, the Silverstone Circuit, some 11000km away from the 2022 Singapore F1 Grand Prix with Porsche’s latest, meanest track-ready machine, the (Type 992) 911 GT3 RS.

2022 is the 50th Anniversary of the ‘RS’, with a lineage that can be traced back to the Carrera RS 2.7 in 1972 (yes, yes, we know production started in 1973) all the way through to the 964 Carrera RS and then to the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993 Carrera RS.

(Click HERE to read our Porsche RS retrospective)

presentation porsche 992 gt3 rs

However, it wasn’t until the 996.2 in 2003 that we entered the ‘modern’ era of the familiar ‘911 GT3 RS’ moniker, a model name that has carried on to this very day with this latest 992.1.

Porsche’s RS models attract the adulation of a die-hard group of enthusiasts, but the overwhelming demand vis-a-vis a relatively low supply means they’re as hard to secure an allocation for as the most popular Patek Philippe or Rolex sports models.

It’s no longer just enough to have the ready million-plus in hand, because I’m pretty sure the same things used to qualify securing an allocation for a coveted watch are also used to qualify RS buyers: purchase history, buyer profile and so on.

You’d think that simply having the money to pay for the car is enough, but not so any more!

Such ‘It’ models have become hard assets and a flipper’s dream to realise huge premiums over sticker price, especially with a long line of eager buyers with cash-in-hand.

As you can imagine, many manufacturers, Porsche included, take great pains to ensure such special cars end up in the hands of the folks who do appreciate them.

presentation porsche 992 gt3 rs

On account of the RS hitting the big five-oh, we thought Porsche would shoe-horn a nat-asp 4.2-litre flat-six (instead of the four-point-oh) into the 992.1 RS.

Don’t forget, the 4.2-litre has already seen motorsports service in the 911 RSR, as well as recently made its appearance in the 2023 GT3 R race-car… so there’s (hopefully) opportunity for this with the 992.2 RS or the rumoured 911 ST!

Despite its aggressive track-honed aero and engineering, the 992.1 RS is powered by the familiar 4.0-litre that is also found in the 992 GT3, albeit with internal work to make it stronger, punchier and more consistent at racetrack revs, as well as the necessary measures to aid engine oil cooling.

The RS’s 15hp bump in output over the 992 GT3’s 510hp is modest, but if you’re at all familiar with Porsche’s RennSport models, you’ll realise it is how the performance is deployed around a race-track, as opposed to bragging rights from straight-line drag-runs that separates the men from the boys.

Even then, the 992 RS is no slouch, as it boasts a 296km/h top speed and 3.2secs 0-100km/h sprint time.

The aggro aero and the super-wide body endow the GT3 RS with a larger-than-life road presence that is Sith Lord ominous. This is one of the purest examples of form following motorsports function, with all the design cues engineered to aid aero over aesthetics – it just so happens we find its motorsports-derived aesthetics alluring enough to tempt us to the Dark Side of the (down) Force!

Most prominent is the oversized, two-level GT Wing, which features distinctive swan-neck supports (like the 992 GT3) and hydraulically-adjustable elements that work instantly, continuously and automatically with the electronically-actuated front active aero.

Thanks to these Porsche Active Aerodynamics (or PAA for short) features (which make their debut in the latest RS), the 992.1 RS develops a maximum downforce of 860kg at 285km/h (and 409kg at 200km/h, or in other words, what the 991.2 RS develops at 285km/h).

presentation porsche 992 gt3 rs

To put the new PAA elements in perspective, the 991.2 RS develops a maximum of 405kg at 285km/h and 200kg at 200km/h (and from what we recall, 300+kg for the 992 GT3).

PAA isn’t just there to be a ‘drag’ (pun intended!), because the 992 RS integrates a DRS (Drag Reduction System) for the first time in a road-car.

There’s a dedicated ‘DRS’ button on the steering wheel for manual engagement and pressing it adjusts the rear wing ‘flat’ for maximum acceleration on the straights.

However, DRS will also automatically actuate from maximum downforce position at speeds above 100km/h and with a throttle opening above 95 per cent – perfect for the straights!

A lot of the PAA elements is possible because Porsche has adopted the motorsports-proven centre-mount single radiator (instead of three in regular 911s) up front, which frees up space to accommodate the active aero elements – however, this means there’s no longer any frunk storage.

The front wings, rear wing, roof, front hood lid, rear engine lid and the doors (for the first-time ever) are all made of CFRP, but you’ll only see the gorgeous carbonfibre weave if you spring for the top-shelf Weissach Package – our test-car even featured the satin-finish carbonfibre roll-cage.

Coupled to the magnesium wheels, this is the lightest possible configuration for the 992 RS, which sees its kerbweight tip the scales at 1450kg.

Cars with huge downforce require a different driving style, especially since this latest 992 iteration of the RS really blurs the lines between road and race-track. This sounds like a commonly-used trope, but it happens to be true in the case of the GT3 RS.

Unlike the GT3, the GT3 RS has always been about crushing lap times, which means uncompromising lightweight performance from the get-go, with every evolution of the RS a huge leap forward in terms of track domination.

However, this also means that the GT3 RS needs a fast, flowing circuit like Silverstone (or Sepang) to thrive and bloom, as it will prove most rewarding when driven at 100 per cent in a controlled environment.

Those in search of a compact, nimble and balanced all-rounder for use on winding roads and the circuit might find themselves better served by the engaging  718 Cayman GT4 RS .

However, as we all know, for many Porschephiles, there’s simply no substitute for the cult appeal of the 911 GT3 RS and the 992 RS looks set to become one of those ‘It’ cars any serious enthusiast needs to have in his/her garage!

If you recall, the first big evolution to the GT3 RS range was the shift to PDK-only with the type 991 onwards and the 992 now sees a greater emphasis on aerodynamics and downforce, a huge leap from what we were familiar with up to the 997 RSes.

presentation porsche 992 gt3 rs

Despite its track–focused exterior, the 992 RS’s cabin isn’t as uncompromising as you might imagine, with enough Alcantara to posh things up (even though it has a functional purpose of cutting reflection). The important dynamic settings can now be toggled on-the-fly in Track mode through the array of rotary dials mounted on the steering wheel.

This includes adjusting front and rear damping/compression for the PASM suspension, the multi-stage ESC/Traction Control, the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) rear differential and of course, switching between the various driving modes of Normal, Sport and Track.

The out-lap showed we really needed to ‘step-up’ as far as driving the 992 RS fast was concerned, because of how strong it is in the ways of the (down) Force. There’s only one way to drive the 992 RS and that’s flat-out, because pussyfooting around makes it feel unwieldy and cumbersome.

It is only when you submit to its seductive promises and begin braking harder, later and far deeper into the corners that you can really embrace the Dark Side to its personality, because this is proper track-car madness, which also leads us to wonder if it is too much car for the road.

The RS’s 7spd PDK boasts shorter gear ratios compared to the 992 GT3 and allows the RS to deliver explosive in-gear acceleration, especially on the straights with ‘DRS’ engaged.

However, it is the cornering composure that boggles the mind, because of how Porsche has exploited the science of speed to use and abuse the laws of physics. The RS delivers immense cornering grip and our jaws dropped when we found out it was even more planted the faster we went.

Early GT3 RSes were already more than track-capable, with the 991s winding things up several notches, but the 992 really channels its motorsports sibling, the GT3 R with its blend of motorsports mayhem.

presentation porsche 992 gt3 rs

True to Porsche form, the car works with you and inspires ample confidence due to how much you feel.

However, you always recognise the steep learning curve associated with really exploiting the RS in a manner befitting its race-ready credentials and this gap in one’s talent versus what the RS is capable of can best be appreciated after you’ve ridden shotgun with the legendary Jörg Bergmeister.

The RS responds sublimely to a committed hand at its helm, with steering and brake controls that are perfectly weighted for maximum track attack.

The Weissach Package even features magnesium shift paddles with a magnetic haptic element for an additional evocative feel during up/down-shifts, thanks to the higher operating force and acoustic feedback.

Porsche has most assuredly redefined the segment and moved the goalposts so far they're practically in a whole different arena.

Once you’re up to speed, the soundtrack is operatic, the pace is gratifyingly frenetic, the gs stupefying and the feelsome thrills, gloriously addictive, as the 992 RS effortlessly encroaches on motorsports territory and is now properly differentiated from the GT3.

Best of all, this is reality and doesn’t take place in a galaxy far, far away.

The New 992 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Just Raised the Bar In a Major Way

With nearly 1,900 pounds of downforce, the 2023 911 GT3 RS thins the line between track and road car.

Porsche has revealed the 992 generation 911 GT3 RS as the most extreme GT product on the 992 platform. Unlike previous GT3 RS 911's, this latest model comes with never before seen features on a production Porsche!

What's changed on the 2023 911 GT3 RS?

The 2023 911 GT3 RS is the most extreme version of the nameplate yet, and that is thanks to its track-focused aerodynamics and retuning of many components in the chassis and powertrain. Porsche focused heavily on improving aerodynamics over the 911 GT3 and to do so they fitted a large radiator under the hood to allow for new active aerodynamic flaps in the front bumper.

The aerodynamic improvements don't stop there as the side gains new fender vents to extract turbulent air from the wheel arches, new side-mounted air vanes to direct airflow, and an eye-catching new rear wing with a drag reduction system operated by a steering wheel button. In total, the car produces 901 pounds of downforce at 124 mph, and a staggering 1,895 pounds of downforce at 177 mph.

Porsche additionally widened the track by 1.14 inches and revised the front suspension that help to improve the airflow under the body, increasing downforce by 88 pounds at the GT3 RS' 's top speed.

What powers the 2023 911 GT3 RS?

Mounted in the rear of the car sits a 4.0-liter flat-six engine that produces 518 horsepower. This slight bump in power over the GT3 is thanks to a new single-throttle intake system and new camshafts. Power is sent through a seven-speed PDK gearbox to the rear wheels. Porsche claims the GT3 RS can accelerate to 60 mph in 3 seconds and has a top speed of 183 mph.

What unique features does the 2023 911 GT3 RS have?

The GT3 RS already has more power and greater downforce than the GT3 , but the unique features don't stop there. Porsche has replaced many exterior body panels for ones made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic to reduce weight, which sits at 3,196 pounds.

Inside, you will find new buttons on the steering wheel to customize your differential, suspension, traction control, drive modes, and to adjust your drag reduction system. Very race car sounding right? Well if you live outside of the U.S., you can option the Clubsport package which adds a steel roll bar, a six-point racing harness, and a fire extinguisher.

The final big option is the hardcore Weissach package which includes exposed carbon fiber exterior body panels, carbon fiber front and rear anti-roll bars, a rear axle sheer panel, and an interior roll bar. Buying this package unlocks the forged magnesium wheel option as well.

How much will the 2023 911 GT3 RS Cost?

While Porsche has not revealed pricing yet for the North American market, they have revealed the 2023 GT3 RS will start at €229,517 in Germany ($233,357 at today’s exchange rates i), and it’s available to order now worldwide.

The Manthey Performance Kit is essentially an aero package that can be installed at specially certified Porsche dealers. There are some structural enhancements as well, mostly a precautionary measure to make sure everything holds up to all of the extra downforce pressure created by that huge adjustable rear wing, plus upgraded steel brake lines. Other enhancements include extended front splitter with side flaps, additional underbody airflow management, rear diffuser with lengthened fins, and even carbon fiber aero discs attached to the rear wheels.

Put it all together, and Porsche has basically bridged the gap between a standard GT3 and the GT3 RS which we had here at Roebling Road Raceway last year. And much like that RS, this GT3 looks like a race car around those nine turns, and you certainly feel like a race car driver behind the wheel as it takes whatever skill you bring to the table and multiplies it. It was so fast and so capable; flawlessly flat and smooth through corners, with spectacular brakes that quickly turned braking zones into areas to pick up time, not just scrub speed. All the while, the GT3’s PDK transmission delivered shifts as fast and seamlessly as always.

Don’t think of it as a great occasional track day car, but as a legit race car you can take through the Starbucks drive-thru every day.

Perhaps the true engineering feat of it all, is that a car this capable can be an absolute easy to drive pussycat on the street. So, don’t think of it as a great occasional track day car, but as a legit race car you can take through the Starbucks drive-thru every day.

Now, where the GT3 RS’s interior is incredibly business-like, our test 911 GT3 appeared more like any other 911, which was fine by us. Just the standard Race-Tex setup with GT silver stitching and some seatbelts in Racing Yellow to match the exterior and keep us firmly placed in the full bucket seats.

2024 Porsche 911 GT3 Manthey Dashboard

With such a priority on downforce, drag racing was not even a consideration with the Manthey kit, yet we still ripped up the quarter-mile in 11.0 seconds flat at 128 mph getting to 60 in just 2.8 seconds, a tenth quicker than we got in the GT3 RS last year.

And it’s at this point we’ll pause to once again declare our love for this naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine. Its heavenly howl is a sound we’ll never grow tired of hearing, and feeling it push us forward, while pushing the tach to 9,000 RPM to create its 502 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque, is a sensation found nowhere else in the automotive world.

The Manthey Performance Kit costs $57,300 plus installation, and it can be installed on any current 992-generation GT3 whether you’re buying it new or already own it. If you are buying new, a 2024 GT3 will cost you at least $185,850, so you’ll be well past $200,000 by the time it’s all said and done.

The concept of a race car for the street is nothing new, but the Manthey Performance Kit will do more than just turn your Porsche 911 GT3 into a race car for the street. It’ll make it a really great race car for the street. No manufacturer does this as well as Porsche.

Why Is the Porsche 911 One of the Last Words in Daily Driver Performance Cars?

Unless it’s Jeremy Clarkson you’re listening to, the Porsche 911 holds a particular spot of reverence among car enthusiasts. Whether it’s a sun-soaked Targa, Carrera 4S daily driver, or ballistically capable GT3 RS, the 911 has a variant for nearly any situation. From the classic 964s to the 996 and the latest 992, the Porsche 911 is one of the last words in do-it-all performance car nameplates.

Whether it’s on the road, on the track, or sans pavement, the Porsche 911 can do it

When it boils down to it, the Porsche 911 lives at the intersection of a premium badge, performance orientation, and daily driver usability. Do you want to jump your iconic German performance car off dunes? The lifted 911 Dakar will handle it. Do you want to attack the Nürburgring? The GT3 RS from the most recent generations, like the 992 or 991, will hang with some of the sharpest supercars on the planet. Better yet, most 911s come with a usable main storage bay and two seats behind the driver.

What’s more, there’s a likely a 911 for any budget. For instance, the first of the water-cooled 911s, the 996-generation Porsche models, routinely sell for around $25,000 with sub-six-figure mileages and a high-revving M96 flat-six-cylinder engine. That said, you might be taking a gamble with the 996’s rare albeit catastrophically expensive engine failures due to a faulty IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing.

A 996-generation Porsche 911 like this one is a capable daily driver.

Moreover, the 911 has fought a perennial battle with America’s original sports car nameplate, the Chevrolet Corvette . However, a PDK-equipped 992 911 Turbo S will outrun a C8 Corvette Z06 with two extra seats and a grippy AWD system. Of course, the Turbo S starts at quite literally twice as much as the Kentucky supercar.

Of course, the Porsche 911 isn’t alone; the Lamborghini Huracán is also a bit of a performance car Swiss Army Knife. For instance, the screaming mid-engine V10 supercar offered a Huracán Peformante trim for apex-clipping racecar-esque performance. Additionally, like the 911 Dakar, the Huracán Strerrato rides on a hiked-up, rally-ready application. However, you’ll be paying significantly more for a Huracán than a comparable 992-generation 911.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
