Lenders want to be assured that they will be paid back, and your business plan will explain exactly how this payback will materialize. In our opinion, the process of creating a business plan is especially important for physicians. We are incredibly well trained to provide care, but often incredibly poorly trained with regard to running a business. Creating a business plan requires you to take a very real look at your market, competition, the risks you are facing, and the work you will have to do to become profitable. Once you have framed your plan, you have your roadmap to success. Top 10 Things You Need to Know A business plan’s primary objective is to get someone to lend you capital. A business plan needs to be based on facts. A business plan needs to clearly review the reality of the pros and cons of your business. Your plan should include an executive summary that someone with no medical background can understand. The term “pro forma” means projected and you will use the projected financial outcomes of your company to engage the help of lenders or investors. An income statement explains how your business will make profit or loss. A balance sheet will show a business’s assets, liabilities, and equity. A cash flow analysis shows the money moving in and out of your business. A break-even analysis predicts the income level required to cover the cost of conducting business. Your plan should focus on interesting lenders in providing the funds you need to operate your practice until you start covering your overhead expenses and begin making profit. Business organization: Describe the legal form of business your practice will take and where you plan to locate. Business development: Describe where you are situated in the start-up stage and what you have done to get ready to open your practice. Review when the company was formed, who the principals are, and identify key personnel. Financial objectives: Be clear about the amount of money you are seeking and how you will use the lender funding. Mention cash flow and sales projections as well as capital required. Remember to keep your summary short and uncomplicated. Do not attempt to summarize every element of the plan. Focus on the elements that will prove to be the most interesting to the lender. 4.2.2 Business Description This is a clear explanation of your business strategy. List specific milestones that you have achieved. 4.2.3 Review of the Market This is where you define your target market (who you will be treating) and how you plan to reach out to it. Market analysis requires research and familiarity with the market, so that you can clearly make out your specific targets and structure your practice to reach them. Market segmentation: Analyze your market (your potential patients) in terms of size, trends, and growth potential. Almost every market possesses some distinctive segments. For a dermatology practice, the market is segmented according to payers, age, income, nationalities, language, and race. You will need to discuss how you plan to cope with any positive or negative effects these segments may have on your practice. How large is the potential market? Overview other physicians who specialize in dermatology in your area. Identify the leading practice and define what makes it successful. Emphasize what sets your practice apart. For example, if there are no other physicians who specialize in advanced cosmetic dermatology and that is your focus, explain how that will serve to differentiate your practice. Your practice may be competing with established practices in the area, and you need to let investors know how you will stand out. How do patients choose one provider over another? Prices, image, or visibility? What services will you offer that your competition does not offer? A couple of things to consider are that word-of-mouth publicity and provider referrals are key. How will your practice target these areas? Honestly put forth your weaknesses in this section. This will help you and lenders identify problems that may hinder your success. A few other things to consider include other practices may have established patient bases, name recognition, and financial strength. 1 4.2.5 Positioning Lay out your strategy for how your brand will distinguish itself and how you will portray your practice to the community. Provide details on how customers will benefit from your professional services and products. A positioning statement should be a succinct description of your target market and an explanation of how you want that market to perceive your brand. 1 4.2.6 Advertising and Promotion A dermatology start-up practice can utilize many different promotional and advertising means. Begin this section with a general promotional plan. Provide a summary of different media and methods you intend to use and explain why. Go into the details if you know what types of promotional programs, publicity, or advertising media you will utilize. 1 4.2.7 Sales Part of your business plan should include how you plan to “sell” yourself and your skills. Physicians will not refer to you unless they know about you. Focus on introducing yourself and any skills that you possess that set you apart. Describe how you are an essential part of the marketing and business strategy. 1 4.2.8 Operations This section should first overview the practice as a business. Recovering from any cosmetic procedure is no easy feat, but there are ways to make the process a little more palatable. From the most luxurious recovery centers from coast to coast to measures to take to make yourself feel good and even must-have post-op kits, this is the ultimate guide to recover from any cosmetic surgery procedure in comfort and style.

The Importance of a Successful Recovery

First and foremost, choosing a board certified plastic surgeon who is an expert in their field is key to obtaining a great outcome. But just as important as who’s wielding the scalpel is how you approach the post-op care and recovery process. “A great surgery with a poor recovery never leads to a great outcome,” says Gregory Buford, MD , a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Lone Tree, CO. “What happens in the OR and outside of it create the overall surgical result.”

There is a reason why recovery is referred to as a process. Recovering from cosmetic surgery isn’t a walk in the park, which is why a predetermined plan should be top of mind. “The key elements to recovery after plastic surgery are not intuitive,” says Kelly Greytok, RN , a plastic surgery recovery nurse. “A strategy of going home, climbing into bed, and staying there is what you don’t want to do.” Instead, the post-surgery recovery and healing process requires the body to be supported with quality nutrition , adequate rest (check out our guide to sleeping better after surgery ), low levels of stress, light pampering, and some necessary topical and healing products. “Little walks and deep breathing are also essential,” she adds.

To prevent issues as you heal, follow your surgeon’s post-op protocol to a T. Complying with instructions, such as wearing compression garments after tummy tuck or liposuction, taking antibiotics (as prescribed) to prevent infection, and managing discomfort with pain medications , is the best way to ensure a smooth recovery . If anything is out of the ordinary, communication with your surgeon is imperative because early intervention can prevent long-term complications, says John Burns, MD , a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Dallas, TX.

The first 72 hours after surgery are most critical, since the body is in its most fragile state and in the most intense stages of healing. During this period, it’s crucial to get ample amounts of rest in a comfortable environment. Stress and stressful situations are uninvited and can release unnecessary amounts of the hormone cortisol, which can cause additional inflammation. Plus, no one wants or needs to be stressed after an operation.

To aid in the initial recovery, some doctors recommend add-on treatments like IV therapies , hyperbaric oxygen chamber sessions , and/or lymphatic drainage massages (plan to budget for these separately, as most surgeons do not include them in the price of the surgery). Greytok is a big advocate of lymphatic drainage massages and always recommends doing them if your surgeon approves. “Not only do they feel wonderful, but the benefits are also measurable,” she says. Just remember that a lymphatic drainage therapist is specialized and different from a regular massage therapist, so seek out a specialist well versed in the technique and not a regular masseuse at a spa .

Should You Splurge for a Private Nurse?

While some may look at a private nurse as an added, unnecessary expense — let’s face it, plastic surgery is expensive enough as it is — there are plenty of patients who heal drastically better with a helping hand. “If you have small children, health conditions that might delay healing, or if you simply are looking for extra and experienced support after your procedure, then hiring a nurse is a wonderful idea,” Dr. Buford confirms.

Certain surgeries, like a facelift or extensive bodywork , demand the aid of a recovery nurse. These procedures are some of the more invasive ones, and it’s not realistic or safe to think that you are going to be up and running right away. “In these cases, you want to rest and should let an expert handle everything,” Greytok says. “My patients hire me because they are spending a significant amount of time and money and want an expert guiding their recovery throughout the most critical days after surgery.”

To remove the burden from the patient, Greytok (and other nurses) take care of everything and anything, including:

  • Managing and changing dressings and drains
  • Monitoring of diet
  • Massage (as instructed)
  • Medication management and disbursement
  • Transportation home from surgery and to post-op appointments
  • All other post-surgical needs

There's also a sense of calm going into surgery when you know that you're in good hands on the other side. “A lot of people enjoy the benefits of having an expert manage their discomfort, swelling, nutrition, dressings, and drains after surgery,” Greytok shares.

The Best Recovery Centers

If you choose to go the route of recovering in a facility rather than at home, you might as well indulge in the very best. Some plastic surgeons, like Dr. Burns, recommend healing and recovery centers to patients over 60 and those who undergo longer or more involved procedures (think: tummy tucks with liposuction , facelifts , mommy makeovers , and body contouring surgeries). “A facility also offers nursing care for help with ambulation and dressing changes, monitoring with vital signs, prevention of DVT with sequential compression devices, and atelectasis with incentive spirometry,” he adds. Plus, there's less stress on the patient and little worry since a provider is by your side to aid in every aspect possible.

4. Scar Care

Once your surgeon gives you the green light to begin using scar strips, don't hesitate for even a second. After Plastic Surgery, More Patients Are Opting to Recover in Luxury

You slide into a car with tinted windows and are whisked off to a discreet service entrance at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. Up you go in a private elevator, then slip behind a curtain, and finally, undetected, you enter a suite with dramatic city views. You are not a celebrity. You are not a reclusive tech billionaire. But you are entering a very private — and very pricey — world: the high-end plastic surgery recovery scene that seems almost as common as face-lifts in  Los Angeles.

"It's very VIP, very anonymous… you ring a bell and people bring you fresh smoothies," says Olivia Schiff*, who works in fashion and spent $4,500 for three nights of recuperating at the SLS after having a corrective tummy tuck , liposuction , and a lower face-lift. She booked the stay through a company called Prestige Surgical Aftercare, a one-stop agency that does everything but give you the face-lift. They book your hotel room, staff it with nurses 24/7, and consult with your surgeon on your aftercare, which might include pain medication (like IV-administered acetaminophen).

"If you're spending an insane amount of money to have plastic surgery , it seems like a great way to treat yourself on the other end of it," says Schiff. "I added an extra night, figuring I'd get the Amex points. You know that you’re safe. You know that they're going to take care of you." Nurses taught Schiff how to cleanse her skin post-op, applied cold compresses and Aquaphor , and they made her "the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever had," she says. "I highly, highly, highly recommend going to a post-op hotel. I was living my best Kardashian life."  

We don't have any actual intel on the Kardashians. We can tell you, though, that these post-op services — there are several companies in L.A. that book rooms for patients at boutique hotels and prestigious resorts such as the Fairmont and the SLS — cater to people who have saved up to use them, as well as "actors, producers, musicians... We've had it all," says Endora Capri Jones, director of nursing at Prestige Surgical Aftercare. (Prestige is not part of the SLS hotel, but it does have a block of rooms there.)

Lymphatic massage, compression boots, and trips to the drugstore (no scrunchie? no problem!) are all on the menu. "We're big on the concierge side," says Amy Dunfrund, director of operations at Prestige. "One patient had a specific vegan restaurant that she wanted food from. Another needed makeup to be picked up at Saks Fifth Avenue, and it was right before the store was about to close, but we were down the street, so we met her makeup consultant to get the products."

These service providers do not function as arms of the hotels, but they do have deals with them, some including discounts on rooms, designated blocks, and accessible IV drips. Patients pay for the room, plus the cost of staffing it with a nurse for 12 or 24 hours a day, with total costs ranging from about $750 to $3,000 per night. Most patients opt for a two- or three-night stay, though some shell out for a month or more.

"It's probably saved some marriages," says Julius Few, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Los Angeles and Chicago, whose Chicago patients have the option to stay at the Four Seasons, The Peninsula, or the Waldorf Astoria. "It's intimidating [to take care of someone after surgery], and obviously their partner wants to make sure they do everything right. And the patient is kind of suffering with the initial phase of the [recovery] process," he continues. "It creates a lot of emotions and that extra layer of stress can impact the whole recovery process. Being in a plush environment that is nurturing and nonintimidating takes a lot of the stress away."

While many recovery services in L.A. are independently contracted, Dr. Few's practice handles its own, staffed with nurses he employs. He checks on patients staying at the Four Seasons, in-room IVs are available to alleviate nausea, and room service is left in the hallway for nurses to grab (an extra level of discretion appreciated by patients). Dr. Few also employs "runners" who will pick up prescriptions or comfy loungewear for patients. "They've gone to Neiman Marcus to pick up lingerie or bras, especially after a breast augmentation, or athletic leisurewear," he says.

Dr. Few has been providing ritzy recovery care for the past 15 years, after patients began flying in from as far away as Hong Kong for breast augmentations and face-lifts. They often traveled alone and, since you can't fly right after surgery, "we had to put together a process to make it easy for them," he explains. He started floating the idea of staying at the Four Seasons, which is in the same building as his surgery center, where his nurses can wheel patients right to their rooms, and then help with everything a partner might, like bathroom visits and post-op drains (we will spare you the details). As more patients flew in, more rooms were booked. "The management at the Four Seasons reached out to me and said, 'Hey, can we take you out to lunch?,'" says Dr. Few. "That's really how it started. They said, 'We want to facilitate this.'" Now, his patients book over 50 nights a year for post-op care.

"There has always been a strong relationship between the post-surgery industry and the hotel industry," says Philip Barnes, general manager of the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. “I have worked in hotels all over the world and have had a lot of guests who come in post-op and while receiving treatments. A member of the Saudi royal family stayed with us in Australia for the better part of a year. And at the Four Seasons in Houston, we worked closely with nearby hospitals.” When the hotel staff knew a patient was staying with them, they were available to go to the drugstore at 3 a.m., for example. Today's more formalized post-op recovery services are a natural extension, says Barnes, and having nurses care for you in a suite with an ocean view feels more nurturing than clinical.

"It used to be that you could stay overnight in a doctor's office, but there were legislative issues where you had to have at least two RNs on call and it became financially untenable," says Steven Teitelbaum, MD, a plastic surgeon in Santa Monica. "The hotel recovery industry has been underway here since at least 1995, and it has grown proportionately with the growth of plastic surgery."

Most of his patients stay after tummy tucks, benefiting from nurse assists with bathroom trips, next-day catheter removals, and motorized beds and pillow placements that all make recovery more palatable. There are times when [clinical] recovery services are a great fit for patients, says Dr. Teitelbaum: Nurses can administer complicated medication schedules, oxygen can generally help you feel better, leg compression devices can prevent a blood clot.

 "Then there are some face-lift patients who just don't want to see anybody. The kids not seeing them, that's a big thing for a lot of people," he adds. "They'll stay a whole week. Recovery's fine, but I mean, it's a lot of money. I'll say, 'You don't really need all of the services of recovery. You could stay in a suite at The Peninsula with a friend for less, order room service, and watch movies and have a memorable time.'"

The trend is clearly good for business — some places book more than 100 nights a year. Of one hotel in Beverly Hills, says post-op hotel guest Schiff, "I've had friends who stayed there, and they're like, 'Oh, my God! I was on the plastic surgery floor and you see these women walking around with bandages on.' These hotels are all over the place! Who knew?"

One of the biggest concerns people have when planning their surgical procedure is how long their recovery will take and when they can expect to return to work and other activities. While recovery times can vary from person to person and will depend on the procedure performed, here are some general tips you can follow to help speed up your plastic surgery recovery.

Follow your doctor's aftercare guidelines

Don't get too caught up in asking "Dr. Google" a million questions after your breast augmentation , tummy tuck or other plastic surgery procedures. Instead, rely primarily on your plastic surgeon's aftercare instructions to help make your recovery as smooth as possible and your results the best that they can be.

Your plastic surgeon's specific aftercare instructions will include guidelines on things such as which medications and supplements are okay to take and which are not, when and how long to wear a compression garment, how to properly clean incisions and when to reintroduce your body to exercise. Your instructions will depend on your procedure and other factors specific to your unique situation, so follow your plastic surgeon's orders to a T.

Get daily movement

While you will need to give your body plenty of time to rest and recover, that does not mean you will need to sit on the couch 24/7 after having plastic surgery. In fact, getting up and moving throughout the day – even if only for a walk around the house or a light walk outside – can help to promote healthy circulation, reduce swelling and speed up your plastic surgery recovery.

Of course, you do not want to overdo your movement after plastic surgery. Instead, listen to your body and take it easy when you need to, and check with your plastic surgeon before introducing any type of strenuous exercise or movement into your routine.

Ask for help

In the first few days after your plastic surgery procedure, expect to need a little extra help around the house. If you can, arrange for help with childcare, pet care, household chores and errands before your surgery so you know that everything is taken care of and you have nothing to worry about when you get home. You will also need to make sure you have someone to drive you to and from your appointment on the day of your procedure.

Even as you continue to recover, if someone offers their help, take it! There's no shame in getting a helping hand now so you can be back on your feet faster after plastic surgery.

Don't smoke or vape

Many people who use tobacco products find that getting plastic surgery is the push they need to kick the habit for good. You already put the hard work and effort into quitting smoking or vaping prior to your procedure, so do not be tempted to pick the habit back up again just because the surgery part is over. Tobacco use can still inhibit your body's ability to properly heal and can lead to complications during the recovery phase.

Eat healthy and drink plenty of water

It might sound simple, but don't discount the power of eating a healthy, balanced diet and staying properly hydrated when it comes to optimizing your body's natural healing process. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as lean proteins, and be sure to drink enough water throughout the day.

Stay away from processed foods, sugary drinks and sweets and salty foods, as these can have the opposite effect and hinder your body's recovery. It is also recommended to limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol while recovering from plastic surgery.

Set a reminder for your follow-up visit

It is very important that you do not miss follow-up visits with your plastic surgeon as you recover from your procedure. During these appointments, your plastic surgeon, or someone from his or her team, will make sure you are healing as expected and that there are no signs of complications along the way. This is also the perfect time to discuss your recovery timeline and whether or not you are ready to resume exercise and other more strenuous activities.

However, it is important that you do not wait for your follow-up appointment to get in touch with your plastic surgeon if you have questions or concerns at any point during your recovery. He or she is your go-to resource throughout your plastic surgery journey and will be more than happy to address any questions or concerns you may have at any time.

Five Tips for a Successful Recovery Plan For Plastic Surgery

Once you’ve decided to undergo plastic surgery, it’s time to start preparing for your recovery. Taking care of yourself properly after surgery helps ensure your results turn out exactly how you imagined and keeps you safe and healthy overall.

Below, we touch on just a few steps you can take to get ready for post-surgery recovery. That way, you can undergo your procedure confident that a comfortable, relaxing experience is waiting once you get home.

1. Prepare Your Recovery Spot

Make sure your space is ready for you when you walk in the door after your procedure. Whether your “home base” for recovery is a hotel room with room service at your fingertips, or you’re recovering in your living room or bedroom, having everything you need within easy reach after surgery is essential. You will want to have someone with you for the first 24 hours after surgery as you are coming off of anesthesia and adjusting to pain medication. If you have forgotten anything, your helper can bring it to you.

Some of the things to consider having in your recovery area include:

  • Pillows —extra pillows will help elevate the surgical site or provide additional support. Depending on your procedure, you may have to lie on your back, stomach, or side. Pillows can help ensure you maintain your prescribed position.
  • Medication —both prescription and over-the-counter pain relievers should be on hand.
  • Phone charger —you want to avoid being stuck with no battery left on your phone, especially if you’re alone at any point in your recovery.
  • Books and remote controls —whether you’re binge-watching “Suits” or finally getting to the pile of books next to your bed, make sure your entertainment needs are at your fingertips.
  • Water and snacks —staying hydrated after surgery is necessary for several reasons. It helps flush the last remnants of anesthesia out of your system and carries vital nutrients to the wound site for healing. It also helps stave off constipation, a common side effect of pain medication after surgery.

2. Choose the Right Clothing

From what you wear to your procedure to preparing for your recovery at home, having suitable clothing is crucial to a comfortable recovery. For rhinoplasty and facelift patients, consider button-up tops to ensure you’re not pulling a shirt over your head and bumping your surgical areas.

For body procedures, loose and comfortable clothing is essential. For breast augmentation , button-up shirts are your best bet, as you want a top that doesn’t require you to lift your arms over your head. Soft, elastic waistlines are best for recovery after abdominoplasty or liposuction , as you don’t want tight clothing rubbing against incisions.

3. Fill Prescriptions Before Your Procedure

If possible, fill post-op prescriptions ahead of your surgery. Most surgeons will send in prescriptions for necessary pain medications before your surgery date for this exact purpose. While you’re at the drugstore, pick up any over-the-counter pain relievers and incision care supplies you may need, so that you’re fully prepared for recovery. Once you’re headed home after your procedure, the last thing you want to do is stop and try to navigate a store, looking for supplies.

4. Follow All Pre- and Post-Surgical Instructions

Remember that your surgeon is knowledgeable and experienced, so all of their pre- or post-op instructions come from extensive training and expertise. These instructions are designed to provide you with the smoothest surgery and recovery possible, so make sure you follow them to the letter.

You will receive your instructions well before your surgery. Read them closely and familiarize yourself with them. Doing so will help you know what to expect in the days leading up to your surgery, during the surgery, and in your recovery. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to ensure a comfortable and safe recovery period free of complications.

5. Contact Your Surgeon with Concerns

When it comes to taking care of yourself after plastic surgery, remember that no questions are off-limits. For some people, their aesthetic procedure will be their first surgical experience, so they have no idea what to expect from their recovery. Contact your surgeon’s office if you are concerned about anything you think is unusual or may be worth checking out. They want you to have the most uncomplicated and comfortable recovery possible, so they’re happy to answer your questions.

If you experience a complication, don’t delay treatment. Leaving something unaddressed can lead to further complications and even adversely affect your health and surgical results. Again, following your surgeon’s instructions closely and attending all your follow-up appointments go a long way toward ensuring a problem-free recovery. However, if anything crops up, let your surgeon know immediately.

Remember that old commercial in which the CEO intones, “I liked it so much I bought the company!”? That’s pretty much what happened to Klava Krivitsky.

About 7 years ago, Krivitsky had elective aesthetic surgery in Los Angeles. An hour after her procedure was over, she was picked up by a private car service—arranged by her aftercare facility—and driven to a top-flight hotel a short distance away. Once there, Krivitsky was treated to around-the-clock care by a staff of experienced nurses and was given unparalleled treatment in the comfort of a luxury venue. That business, located in West Hollywood, Calif, on the outskirts of Beverly Hills, made a huge impression on the savvy Soviet transplant.

An engineering student who grew up in Odessa, Ukraine, Krivitsky immigrated to the United States in 1989. At the time of her surgery, she co-owned a medical-supply company in Los Angeles. Her physician, Garth Fisher, MD, FACS, sent her to the recovery center after he had performed a blepharoplasty on her.

“Seven years ago, I stayed at a premium aftercare center,” Krivitsky remembers, “and when I stayed at that facility I thought maybe I can open something like this. I really liked this kind of business, and all my life I’d been interested in medicine—especially plastic surgery.”

Indeed, the business’ entire unique marketing proposition—a premium plastic surgery recovery center that could leverage the assets of a hotel that was just a short drive from Dr. 90210 territory—impressed Krivitsky immensely.

“I told my partner I wanted to open a business like this right away,” she says. “She visited me with her mom, my husband, and my daughter, and I told them, ‘You know, guys, we’re looking for a medical business, and this is a very nice business.’ “

Smiling, Larisa Shor (Krivitsky’s partner) remembers the visit well. “Klava grabbed my hand and said, ‘I want this business!’ ” To be sure, both women were considering new business opportunities. They thought about buying a nursing home, but that idea had too many negatives. But they both really liked the idea of buying a plastic surgery recovery facility—assuming they were lucky enough to find one. That kind of center attracts a more upscale and diverse clientele.

Krivitsky says, “You get to deal with women who want to make themselves better,” a group to which she already belonged. Plus, a surgery recovery center also presented both women with a chance to use their medical backgrounds and provide more hands-on health care, something they had each wanted to do for a while.

Over time, Krivitsky and Shor did their research and became more convinced. “I had a friend in Russia, a plastic surgeon, who had a facility like this,” Krivitsky explains. “When I talked to him, he told me, ‘You know, Klava, maybe it is a good idea to open a business in recovery after plastic surgery.'” Good advice, to be sure.

Within a few years, as their surgical-supply business expanded, the idea of owning a business similar to the one Krivitsky fell in love with didn’t seem that far-fetched. They continued to ask questions and kept their ears to the ground, hoping to find an existing business to take over.

The Opportunity

Finally, the business partners came across an ad in the classified section of The Wall Street Journal that offered the recovery center “Shanteque” for sale. Five years after her epiphany, Krivitsky’s dream came true.

Today, together with Krivitsky’s daughter Isabella, the women are co-owners of Shanteque Recovery Retreat, among the nation’s premier plastic surgery recovery centers, a facility that benefits both patients and doctors. Richard Ellenbogen, MD, FACS, FICS, proclaims, “I’ve been using Shanteque for about 20 years. I think very highly of Shanteque. All the other places that compete with them—they are merely imitators. Shanteque was the one that started it, and they are really very good.”

On a Friday afternoon in January, Shanteque’s nursing station and main office is abuzz with activity. The phone rings, the fax machine delivers documents from a surgeon, and nurses zigzag around the room.

A patient will be here soon, ready to be met and escorted upstairs. Amid this action-packed atmosphere stands Shor. A Ukrainian immigrant, Shor earned her degree as a registered nurse in the former Soviet Union and came to the United States in 1991.

She wears a lab coat as she discusses Shanteque, its history, processes, and manifold advantages. Shanteque is a full-service recovery center, and most reservations are made by the patient’s plastic surgeon about 2 or 3 months in advance of the procedure. On surgery day, someone from the physician’s office calls Shanteque 1 hour before the patient is released. After being discharged, the patient is met by one of the company’s two limousines and then is driven to Le Meridien.

The guest arrives almost clandestinely; he or she is dropped off in an underground garage, where a nurse, a smile, and a wheelchair greet him or her. Ushered into a waiting elevator, the patient is then brought upstairs and escorted directly to his or her room. Any immediate needs are taken care of by the attending nurse, and the patient is left to a quiet, peaceful rest.

The Benefits

When asked why a patient would be better off in a place like Shanteque rather than their own home, Shor extols the many benefits of her facility. “The first 24 to 48 hours after surgery are crucial,” she says. “There may be risk of hematoma, blood pressure must be monitored, and patients are often very needy. Plus, there’s a different protocol for each doctor.”

Indeed, throughout the patient’s stay, he or she is treated to incredibly attentive health care. There is one nurse for every three patients—an impressive ratio by anyone’s standards. A nurse checks in on patients every 20 minutes.

In addition, the facility works with a 24-hour pharmacy in case any off-hour medicine is required. Of Shanteque’s partnerships with local surgeons, Krivitsky adds, “On our list we have 62 doctors—most of them are from Beverly Hills. And our relationship with them is great. We never have problems with the doctors.”

Since acquiring the business, Krivitsky and her partners haven’t turned complacent. “We have changed so many things since we bought the business,” she says. “Now, we offer private-duty nurses—some patients, after staying with us for 2 or 3 days, may request a private-duty nurse at home, and if requested we do send nurses to clients’ homes. We’ve changed some procedures. We have a hyperbaric chamber. We’ve upgraded the rooms—and both the staff and office run better.”

They’ve also improved their overall marketing strategy by using a public-relations (PR) firm. “We asked some doctors if they had any suggestions on how we could improve our business,” Krivitsky says, “and one referred us to our current PR agency. And I can see the difference. All our patients comment about our Web site, for example. We have evaluation forms, and all our feedback is excellent. I sometimes go to patients’ rooms and I ask how they like our nursing staff. They like us.”

Importantly, plastic surgeons like them, too. Ellenbogen says, “Under the new management, they have improved and gotten through the problems that any business has when it kind of gets older.”

Le Meridien’s north wing corridor is decorated with impressionistic artwork in expensive-looking frames. Downstairs, the renowned hotel’s guests enter a contemporary and spacious white marble lobby. Sun rays stream in through wide skylights and illuminate aromatic flowers as the sound of a fountain fills the air.

The environment lends a calm, comforting air that continues in the suites above. This is clearly an appropriate setting for a luxury plastic surgery recovery retreat.

Each Shanteque guest room is furnished with a fax machine; wireless Internet access; an adjustable king-size bed; and bedside controls for the bed, television, music, and DVD player. Beside each bed is a special phone with a one-touch direct line to the nursing station. In a clever move, a small piece of fabric fastener has been attached to this button in all the rooms so that patients with postoperatively impaired eyesight can simply feel for the “fuzzy button.”

The Partners

That room is a long distance from the port city of Odessa, among the largest in Ukraine. After coming to the United States from Odessa in 1991, Shor became a licensed x-ray technician. At the same time, she was the office manager for a West Hollywood plastic surgeon. Krivitsky, also from Odessa, moved to the United States in 1989. In one of life’s little coincidences, the two strangers ended up being neighbors in Los Angeles and quickly became close friends.

At the time, Krivitsky worked at a pharmacy and medical-supply company. Then, in 1996, looking to start her own business, she approached her friend and asked if she’d be willing to partner with her to start their own medical-supply company. When Shor agreed, the two friends were suddenly new business partners, opening Star Medical and Surgical, based in West Hollywood. That business still exists today, but Shanteque is now Krivitsky’s and Shor’s true love and object of attention.

Shanteque offers its affluent visitors world-class suites, many with private, 30-foot outdoor areas. But Shanteque doesn’t just treat the rich and famous.

Krivitsky notes, “Sometimes we have movie stars and celebrities, but even people who are not so rich stay with us. We have patients from other states, and they know how much money they’ve spent on plastic surgery. So when their doctor tells them that they should go to a recovery place after surgery, they generally listen. People who have plastic surgery understand they have to have somebody who can take care of them because it is surgery, after all.”

Shanteque’s guests are provided all the luxuries of a premium hotel—a benefit that adds to the patient’s experience. That includes access to the hotel’s 24-hour room service. At Shanteque, however, patients get the added benefit of a nutritionist who oversees their dietary needs and prepares custom menus that include both regular and “soft” choices. Shanteque offers premium service, and that luxury comes at a premium price—a stay in a queen-bed suite costs just under $800 per night.

Certainly, Krivitsky and Shor should be successful for many years to come. Always looking for the next big thing, they have plans to open a satellite location.

Krivitsky says, “We want to open another place in Newport Beach [Calif], because there are so many doctors there. Some doctors have called us and asked us to open a location down there. We’re looking for a place within 5 or 10 minutes from most of the doctors, and Newport Beach is a very nice area with very nice hotels. We’re looking forward to grow the business beyond just the one we bought.”

Today, Shanteque, with its 15 suites and convenient location, is doing fine, serving an upscale clientele. Le Meridien Hotel gives this client base exactly what it expects in an overnight stay.

The Shanteque experience, meanwhile, starts with door-to-door service and continues with premium aftercare, courtesy of Shanteque’s most important feature: a skilled, caring, and qualified staff. Patients need a setting where relaxation and comfortable care help speed their healing. Obviously, this home away from home offers its customers the same creature comforts they’d expect in their own living quarters. And while Shanteque’s guests enjoy 24-hour medical attention, their surgeons are likely relaxing even more.
