Quality of Dutch education

Master Programmes and PhD’s attended in Dutch universities are held in high regard because of the high academic standards. The Netherlands internationally rank 7th on the number of publications per researcher and 4th on the impact of research publication. The PhD programme epidemiology equals the registration demands from the Dutch Epidemiology Society  for Epidemiologist B.

PhD in the Netherlands

Getting a PhD degree in The Netherlands means spending 3-4 years conducting original research and writing your dissertation, while you work in close collaboration with your supervisor. Once you have at least 5 published articles in peer reviewed journals and your dissertation has been approved for publication, a public defense of your research is required. When you succeed, will you attend a traditional - and festive - ceremony and bestowed with the title of PhD.

In short, a PhD in The Netherlands is

  • a fulltime job (3-4 years)
  • extremely intense, but greatly rewarding
  • gives you many international opportunities
  • for the truly dedicated

In paid employment

A PhD is usually in paid employment, therefore a formal interview procedure applies. You can search for such a PhD position at vacant research positions within the UMC Utrecht  (in Dutch) and Careers at UMC Utrecht (in English). It is possible to come up with your own research objective and data, however, this has to be validated by all parties involved.

Course Intersectionality and I

Are you a junior or PhD researcher interested in making your health research diversity-responsive? Do you enjoy interaction, reflection, collaboration and challenging discussions? Or do you just want to make this world a better place? Then this (online) training (3 ECTS) about intersectionality and health organized by APH researchers is recommended for you!

The training is suitable for both qualitative and quantitative researchers. You do not need to have experience with intersectionality to enter the course. This training is for junior researchers or PhD students. Our main focus will be public health, but the topics covered are relevant for other health-related fields. APH researchers get a 25% discount.

Training Participatory actionresearch (PAR)

There is increasing interest in participatory action research, but how do you do it right? Participatory action research (PAR) offers starting points for involving people (patients, citizens, experts by experience, professionals, policy makers, etc.) in research in a meaningful way. PAR is about research with and for practice and people whose lives or work are the subject of study.

In this 4-day Dutch training (3 ECTS) of the School for Participation we pay attention to the underlying principles and values of PAR, the theoretical background, quality criteria, ethics, and the influence of the (organizational) context on the research process and the role as an academic. Knowledge of qualitative research is required. Preferably by having followed a training course, but submission of a written motivation is also possible. APH researchers get a 25% discount.

The MIND consortium aims to better understand the potential role of DNA methylation in brain development and mental health, by combining epigenetics and neuroimaging research.

Integrating multi-omics data from population-based studies and conducting experimental validation studies, we aim to elucidate molecular pathways underlying age-related diseases and identify potential biomarkers for their early diagnosis.

Neuro-Epidemiology

The focus of our research group is on the etiology, natural course, diagnosis and prognosis of common age-related brain diseases.

In our team we study how nutrition, obesity, physical activity and other lifestyle factors are associated with population health across the life-course.

Our research group aims to increase the understanding of the etiology, course and effects of common psychiatric symptoms and disorders in the general population.

Dissertations

Publications, collaborations.

The department of Epidemiology is a prominent center worldwide in epidemiological research. We strive to combine development of new quantitative methods with direct implementation and application in clinical and population research.

Within the department we have an extensive network of collaborations with many ongoing projects that cut across multiple research lines. In fact, our goal is to appoint every graduate student to work across at least two research lines. This way, we facilitate cross-talk, exchange of ideas, and rapid dissemination of knowledge, for instance from methods development to application.

Similarly, we have many ongoing collaborations with numerous departments within the Erasmus MC. Importantly, these collaborations extend to both clinical departments as well as basic sciences departments. Long-standing collaborations (>10 years) are with the departments of Neurology, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Cardiology. We have solidified these collaborations by arranging joint appointments of our faculty with the respective clinical department.

In addition, we have arranged statistical consultancy agreements with several other departments, including Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, and Surgery. Again, these arrangements facilitate exchange of ideas and dissemination of knowledge.

Moreover, the department of Epidemiology is coordinator or key collaborator in more than 20 Academic Centers of Excellence.

Our collaborations are not restricted to Universities, but extend for other Academic Institutes and Private Organizations (i.e. RIVM, KNAW, Inspectorate, CBS, NIH, Chinese Academy of Sciences, BioGen Inc, Johnson&Johnson). Finally, our collaborations are truly global, with ongoing projects in over 30 countries. Importantly, this includes emerging economies as well as low- and middle-income countries.

Academic Presentation

Biostatistics and Epidemiology are often studied and approached from a national-centric perspective. Few programs are truly international in scope so as to fully prepare graduates for global civil service or corporate careers that will engage a wide variety of global health challenges, including vaccine policy HIV, drug-resistance, diet-related or lifestyle diseases, etc.

To answer this challenge, EUCLID has designed a world-class doctoral curriculum, which is presented here with full documentation of syllabus and faculty resources, as well as total tuition. This documentation will enable potential students to determine if this program is suitable and aligned with their career objectives.

Global Health Conference

AUDIENCE | INTEREST GROUPS

This unique PhD program focuses on the  practical and policy aspects of global public health rather than the advancement of purely theoretical knowledge.

This doctoral program was primarily designed to serve civil servants of EUCLID’s Participating States, but it is also open to the general public as an excellent route to pursue a career within inter-governmental bodies, NGOs and the public sector.

Thanks to its low tuition and institutional relationships, and because it covers such topics as health systems strengthening, malaria and tropical diseases in-depth, it is expected to be of special interest to Global South/African students.

Research Tracks

The Department's current research tracks in the PhD program include:

Cancer Epidemiology offers a rich, vibrant and dynamic environment for masters and doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows to actively participate, learn, explore and conduct cancer-related population-based and clinical research. The track has a long and successful history of training masters and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. Past students continue to conduct population-based cancer research and have made successful transitions to positions in academia, government and private sector organizations.

Cardiovascular and Clinical Epidemiology focuses on the use of epidemiologic methods in clinical research and practice as well as interdisciplinary training on the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease. The program integrates knowledge on all aspects of the disease: biology, behavior, treatment, and prevention. Training emphasizes active participation in research and translational epidemiology using a collaborative approach, which is enhanced by the close relationships between the Department of Epidemiology and clinical departments of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis offers students a unique educational experience in clinical trial and evidence synthesis methodology. Methods are applied to a variety of clinical areas including respiratory-, eye- and infectious diseases, and mental health. Student-faculty discussions, journal clubs, research-in-progress meetings, seminars and active participation in research add to both the depth and breadth of the program.

Environmental Epidemiology concentrates on the impact of environmental exposures on health and disease states in human populations. This track integrates epidemiological methods, assessment of environmental exposures and understanding of specific disease processes to identify the health consequences of environmental exposures. Environmental Epidemiology provides basic information for risk assessment, risk communication, and environmental health policy decisions and has a central role in identifying, implementing and evaluating strategies for the prevention and control of environmental exposures. Training in Environmental Epidemiology emphasizes active participation in large population research projects, with close collaborations across the School and with national and international collaborators.

Epidemiology of Aging focuses on the determinants of physical and cognitive health, disease, and function in older adults. Offers multidisciplinary training in methods and theories needed for the study of older populations. Strong ties exist with several multi-departmental training grants and programs. This training program also is connected to numerous large research projects.

General Epidemiology and Methodology offers research and training opportunities in almost all areas of chronic disease epidemiology, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diseases of childhood and includes advanced methodology training in epidemiologic methods as well as providing individualized or customized training in statistical epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology and social epidemiology.

Genetic Epidemiology focuses on the study of genetic and environmental factors, and their interaction in disease and normal variation. Emphasis is on understanding the methodology and approach to designing, executing and analyzing genetic studies. Training is broad-based and collaborative and encourages participation in research from faculty in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Institute of Genetic Medicine, and the School of Medicine.

Infectious Disease Epidemiology provides training in the fundamentals of infectious disease epidemiology with an eye toward preparing graduates to work in teaching, research and practice. The program emphasizes principles and methods that can be used to understand the dynamics and control of transmissible diseases by all classes of organisms. The curriculum builds on the faculty's extensive and diverse experience researching and combating infectious diseases, ranging from hospital acquired infections, to neglected tropical diseases and sexually transmitted infections.

New Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology

April 19, 2024 Written by Amy Cherry | Photo by Ashley Barnas Larrimore

Fully online program can be completed in one year of part-time study

During the COVID-19 pandemic, epidemiologists played a critical role in safeguarding public health, providing governments and health organizations with necessary data that informed public health policies and strategies. The pandemic laid bare our need for more highly skilled epidemiologists, which is why the University of Delaware College of Health Sciences has launched a new Epidemiology Graduate Certificate .

The fully online program was developed directly in response to growing workforce needs in our post-pandemic world.

“Core skills taught in epidemiology, like study design and data analysis, are in high demand among employers in public health and related fields like healthcare and pharmaceutical development,” said Jennifer Horney , professor and founding director of UD’s Epidemiology Program . “The COVID-19 pandemic exposed our structural gaps, and so now there’s a concerted effort nationally to bolster those systems, and higher education must play a role in that.”

Lauren Camphausen, assistant director of the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology Program, said the certificate program through UD’s Graduate College was born from conversations with healthcare partners.

“Those conversations revealed a strong desire among medical professionals and residents to develop more focused skills around epidemiology,” said Camphausen. “We capitalized on UD’s graduate certificate structure to create an ideal offering for this audience to bolster their professional skill sets and credentials.”

The 12-credit, flexible program is designed to support healthcare professionals who may be hard-pressed for time but seek additional training in epidemiologic methods and the applied skills needed to address a broad range of health problems. The curriculum focuses on practical skills, biostatistics, and data analysis and prepares students to conduct an independent research study. The Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology can be completed in one year of part-time study.

“The Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology is also a great option for those interested in switching career paths or who want to make themselves more competitive within their field; the certificate can help them broaden their portfolio or even shift their focus,” Camphausen said.

The Epidemiology Graduate Certificate can also be a great way to explore the field for those considering pursuing UD's complete MPH program.

“This is a way for those students to dip their toes into the field before committing to the full 42-credit MPH in epidemiology graduate degree,” Camphausen said. “We’ve designed the program to feed directly into the MPH program.”

But they’re not the only target audience for the certificate program. Camphausen said they’ve seen interest from current UD graduate students in various Ph.D. programs who have expressed interest in simultaneously completing their MPH.

“Within the College of Health Sciences, we have several graduate students in our epidemiology classes, whom we can work with to help them complete the rest of the requirements to add a certificate to their other graduate degree program,” Camphausen said.

There are no prerequisites for the certificate program; however, prior experience with research and data collection is helpful.

“We always do a holistic application review,” Camphausen said. “Students in our current MPH program come from a wide range of backgrounds, and the certificate course is designed for people with different backgrounds and levels of understanding.”

She added, “This certificate could be a great way for someone considering a career shift, so we don’t want to keep anyone from exploring a genuine interest.”

Amy Nelson , an assistant professor of epidemiology and infectious disease epidemiologist, directs the Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology program.

“In my experience working with certificate students, they are really committed to the coursework based on a desire to round out their graduate training in a clinical or other graduate program or advance in their careers in public health,” said Nelson. “It’s rewarding to see where this year of additional training can take our students.”

One of the program highlights is Social Epidemiology .

“Thematically, social epidemiology is an important focus for us as a program at UD,” Camphausen said. “The course was designed to account for the work underway in Delaware around health equity and social determinants of health. That allows us to put our own UD stamp on what we want to focus on for epidemiology. “

The deadline to register for the Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology is August 1. For more information and details, contact Amy Nelson at [email protected] .

Biostatistics Graduate Program

Yeji ko is first author of annals of epidemiology paper.

Posted by duthip1 on Thursday, April 18, 2024 in News .

Congratulations to PhD student Yeji Ko on the publication of Adjustment for duration of employment in occupational epidemiology in the June 2024 issue of Annals of Epidemiology  (appearing online ahead of print this week). Professor Ben French , who was r ecently elected to the National Council for Radiation Protection and Measurements , is the paper’s corresponding author. Ko, French, and colleagues at Oak Ridge Associated Universities examined the healthy worker survivor effect in relation to radiation risk among nuclear workers, using simulation studies to arrive at reliable results and conclude that “it is crucial to flexibly adjust for duration of employment to account for confounding arising from the healthy worker survivor effect in occupational epidemiology.” The work was made possible by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Directed Research and Development Grant, which promotes collaborations between universities and ORAU scientists for foundational research efforts.
