Studying in Germany without IELTS is possible as several universities offer alternatives to assess your English language proficiency. Here's a general guide on how to pursue studies in Germany without IELTS .

Choose English-Taught Programs

You must opt for programs that are taught in English. Many German universities offer a wide range of courses in English, especially at the master's and doctoral levels. By selecting an English-taught program, you may not be required to submit IELTS scores . However, you need to submit other documents to let the German university know that you have proficiency in English to study English courses.

Language Proficiency Tests

Some universities accept alternative English language proficiency tests instead of IELTS. Tests like TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or Cambridge English exams (e.g., Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English) are often considered. Check with the specific university to know which alternative tests they accept.

Medium of Instruction Letter (MOI)

If you have completed your previous education in English, you can request a Medium of Instruction Letter from your previous institution. This letter confirms that your previous degree was taught in English, and some universities may accept it as proof of language proficiency.

Interviews or Skype Calls

Some universities conduct interviews or Skype calls as part of the admission process to evaluate your communication skills. The university may ignore the IELTS requirement if you excel in such interactions.

Work Experience in an English-Speaking Environment

Certain universities consider substantial work experience in an English-speaking environment as evidence of language proficiency. If you have worked in an English-speaking workplace, inquire if this can be considered in place of IELTS.

English Proficiency Certificate from Previous Employer

If you have worked in a professional setting where English is the primary language of communication, you might obtain a certificate from your employer stating your proficiency. Some universities may accept such certificates.

Foundation Courses in Germany

Enrolling in a foundation course in Germany can be an alternative. These courses help you improve your language skills and prepare for academic studies. After completing the foundation course, you may directly enter a degree program.

Everyone who wants to study in Germany must have a student visa. An IELTS Score is required to get a student visa. However, if you submit an MOI certificate as an alternative to IELTS, then you are not required to submit IELTS for a German student visa.

Grasp the Intricate German Language

There are various universities in Germany where international students do not have to give an English language proficiency exam or test like IELTS to enroll for admission. However, there are certain universities where one can study in Germany without IELTS. You also get an opportunity to learn the German language while studying in a Western European country. German companies fill top management levels with global leaders building an extensive network of branches across the globe.

Work Prospects for International Students

Germany has immense opportunities for international students to work part-time. These opportunities are beneficial for handling living costs, increasing future employability, and learning to live independently. A degree issued by Germany is highly valued and globally recognized making it easier for German graduates to find their place in the demanding international market.

Yes, it is possible to study in Germany without IELTS! The key options to do so are either you give proof that you completed your undergraduate degree with English as the language of instruction or to provide a Language or Medium of Instruction Certificate (MOI) from your previous university or school to prove your English proficiency. Moreover, students from countries with English as their native language or with a degree in English literature can also study in Germany without IELTS!

If you haven’t been able to appear for IELTS or don’t have the qualifying scores or for any other reason you won’t be able to submit your language proficiency scores , the best option is to choose a German university that doesn’t require IELTS and apply for your chosen program in the same. The key essentials that you need to keep in mind while applying for an academic institution to study in Germany without IELTS are as follows:

  • The university will demand a “Language/Medium of Instruction Certificate (MOI)” which you need to get from the academic institution where you completed your previous program.
  • IELTS is not required if a student holds a bachelor’s degree , where English was the language of instruction for that degree course.
  • You can also study in Germany without IELTS if English is the native language of your country.
  • If you have pursued your bachelor’s degree in English as a discipline such as BA in English Literature , you will be eligible to apply for a program at a German university without submitting English proficiency scores.
  • Some universities conduct an audio-video interview to check an applicant’s English language proficiency.

However, it is always preferable to check directly with the university, if they require IELTS or any other language-related examination.

Admission Essentials Without IELTS

If you are planning to study in Germany without IELTS, keep a checklist of the following documents at the time of sending your application to the chosen university as well as for Germany student visa :

To study in Germany without IELTS or any other language certification, you must submit an MOI certificate issued by your previous academic institution confirming that your medium of instruction was English in the prior degree. MOI will serve as a valid language certificate and help you with the entire admission process.

Once you have been accepted by the German university you applied for, ensure that you get a confirmation letter from the institution that your medium of instruction letter has been verified and you are exempted from submitting TOEFL scores. You can use the confirmation letter at your nearest German embassy as the replacement for TOEFL or English Proficiency scores.  It will help you clear the immigration process as it will have a clear statement that your MOI was accepted.

Another way to study in Germany without IELTS is by opting for a German language program. The course requires you to submit a C1 to B1 level certification in the German language. If you are applying for German-taught programs you can provide German language test scores of TestDAF , DSH , GOETHE, etc.

The last thing to do to study in Germany without IELTS is to apply for a German Student VISA and pack bags to land at your dream university. You will have to submit all the documents required for your Germany Student visa application process. The list of documents is given below:

  • Recent photographs
  • A valid passport
  • Letter of Acceptance
  • Academic Transcripts
  • Financial Evidence
  • Proof of Health Insurance
  • Proof of paid visa fee

Generally, the IELTS qualification is one of the documents required to qualify for a VISA program. But if you send your MOI certification to the university with a degree confirmation email, it is not required.

The confirmation letter should state explicitly that you may have requested a form of training certification and that it is approved by the institution to carry out your research. When registering for a student VISA, send your Medium of Instruction certification and a confirmation letter from the German university together with all the necessary documentation. Your goal of researching in Germany without IELTS is nearer to you than it has ever been. We are here to help you make the right decision and choose the right university to fulfill your dreams.

Here are the necessary procedures to qualify for a German Student Visa:

  • Identify the nearest German Embassy or Consulate
  • Examination of the criteria and processes
  • Set up the appointment for a Visa
  • Have All Visa Application Documentation Available
  • Start preparing for an appointment with your Passport

The process of applying for a German student visa is short between obtaining the notification of entry to the institution and acquiring the requisite funds to reside in Germany. This is among the most significant criteria because if you have not been given an official scholarship, you would have to include sources of significant assets through certain methods, such as getting the excess cash in a blocked German account.

Types of Courses to Study in Germany Without IELTS

There are 2 major types of programs that are available for international students eyeing to study in Germany without IETLS i.e. English and German . As per the German education system, the university courses are divided based on the medium of instruction:

International students who are not familiar with the local languages of Germany can opt for a course that is taught in the English language. Almost all German universities offer a bunch of courses in English to attract international students. Candidates from English-speaking countries can directly study these courses without giving any language proficiency test, however, other candidates need to take these tests.

Another option for international students is to study the same programs with the German language as the medium of instruction. Students must ensure that they are comfortable with the language before the admission process begins. The German language requirements might vary from university to university. Most of the institutions accept a certification ranging from level B1 to C1.

Check out these common mistakes to avoid when attempting the Listening section of IELTS.

IELTS is a test to measure the English language proficiency of individuals wanting to study in a country where English is used as a medium of instruction and communication. Types of PhD Programs in Germany

Before you start searching for a PhD program, it’s essential to understand that in Germany, there are two different paths you can take when pursuing a PhD, each with its own set of advantages and opportunities.

Individual PhD Programs

An individual doctorate program is considered the more common and traditional PhD route in Germany. It is a flexible and self-directed path to earning a doctoral degree, particularly in fields like humanities and social sciences. You take the initiative to find a supervisor (called “Doktorvater” or “Doktormutter”) for your research project and often suggest your research topic.

There’s no fixed curriculum, giving you the freedom to set your research timeline and choose coursework. This approach requires self-discipline and active networking, including participation in doctoral candidate meetings and research events.

Structured PhD Programs

Structured PhD programs in Germany offer a clear path to a PhD degree, typically lasting three to five years. Unlike individual doctorate studies, they include a curriculum, research proposal submission that has to fit an existing program, and a set timeline for coursework and research.

Candidates benefit from advisor supervision and are encouraged to collaborate across disciplines, making structured programs ideal if you’re seeking a guided and comprehensive doctoral experience.

The requirements and application documents for a PhD in Germany can vary depending on your chosen institution and research area. However, as a general guideline, you should prepare the following:

  • Academic degree recognized in Germany. Typically, you’ll need a master’s degree or a German state examination (Staatsexamen) to qualify for a PhD program.
  • Copy of master’s thesis. Provide a copy of your master’s thesis, showcasing your research skills and the depth of your academic work.
  • Research proposal. Craft a clear and comprehensive research proposal outlining your intended research topic, objectives, methodology, and significance.

*Note that nationals of certain countries , including the United States, Australia, Israel, Japan, and Korea, who are not required to obtain a visa, must still apply for a residence permit.

> For more specific information tailored to your situation, we recommend contacting the German embassy or consulate in your home country. You can also use this visa navigator.

Arriving in Germany and commencing your PhD program is an exciting step, but there are certain formalities you need to take care of. The international office at the university or a representative can guide you, however here are the main things to take care of once you’re in the country:

Register Your Residence

Shortly after your arrival, you must register your residence at the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt). This is mandatory, and you typically have a window of two weeks to complete this process.

Obtain Health Insurance

Everyone in Germany, including international PhD students, is obligated by law to have health insurance coverage . The type of health insurance you are eligible for depends on the source of your funding:

  • Doctoral candidates with an employment contract are typically insured automatically with a state-regulated health insurance provider (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung -GKV)
  • Doctoral candidates without an employment contract (with a fellowship or private funding) may choose between:
  • Voluntary health insurance coverage with a state-regulated provider.
  • Coverage with a private health insurance company.

Some exceptions allow you to retain your insurance from your home country, such as students from a European Union (EU) country or other countries with social security agreements with Germany.

Open a Bank Account

It’s advisable to open a German bank account as soon as possible. Many financial transactions in Germany, including receiving your stipend or salary, are typically done through a German bank account.

Enrollment at University

If your PhD program requires enrollment at a university, you’ll need to complete this step. Submit the necessary documents to the university’s enrollment office, which may include your admission letter, passport, proof of health insurance, and proof of financial means.

Which universities should I look at for PhD?

There are various kinds of institutions of higher education in Germany. A majority of these belong to either of the following categories:

phd admission in germany without ielts

Universities and Universities of Technology (TU), are research-oriented and offer a wide variety of subjects. These are the only establishments that can award a PhD degree.

In case you are carrying out your PhD at a research organisation/ University of Applied Sciences, it will always be through a partner university/TU that you will get your degree. Therefore it is important that you fulfill the eligibility criteria of the university/TU as well.

Before you finalise a university or a research institution make sure to check out their websites to know what kind of research is already going on there.

Which is the best university in Germany?

There is no “best university”, neither in one subject and certainly not across all subjects.

DAAD India © CHE Ranking

Germany offers a multidimensional ranking, considering various criteria that are important from a student’s perspective. For example, student and staff judgments on quality of teaching, atmosphere at the university, library and other equipment, student numbers, average study duration, number of graduations, third party funding etc. This way you get a detailed picture of the strengths and weaknesses of each university on university-ranking.de . Here you can find your programme by selecting a subject, a university or even a city in Germany!

As a researcher you should also take the research rankings  into consideration. The criteria for such rankings could be research infrastructure, citations, patents, publications and student reviews, to name a few.

How should I plan my doctorate?

If you have set your mind on a PhD in Germany, you can consider two approaches: the traditional approach i.e. individual doctorate and the structured doctoral programmes.

phd admission in germany without ielts

Individual doctoral studies involve identifying a supervisor ( Doktorvater / Doktormutter ) at a German university who is willing to guide your research. This system offers a lot of freedom, and calls for a great deal of personal initiative right from identifying a topic in your research field. This kind of doctorate takes about 3-5 years to complete.

Structured PhD programmes  are internationally oriented, conducted largely in English and are comparable to PhD programmes offered in English-speaking countries. Here supervision is carried out by several university teachers. These programmes lead to a PhD in about three years.

What if I want to do a part of my PhD research in Germany?

The research Grant: Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle which is also famously known as DAAD Sandwich Scholarship lets you complete your PhD in two countries. The first country being your home country where you are registered as a doctoral student and the second country is but naturally Germany.

You are supervised at your home university as well as at the host institute in Germany. Your doctoral degree is awarded by the home institution. This is the well known “sandwich model”.

While generally as a Master degree holder you will have ticked off the first major requirement, it is always a good idea to check if the university’s requirements and your qualifications match. And then you can start with the application procedure.

Am I eligible to apply for a PhD?

In Germany, every university is autonomous. This means that every university/ study programme has its own set of criteria for admitting students. So please check the university website, and specifically the programme you are interested in. Here you will find the exact admission requirements.

However, some generalisation is  possible. As a Master degree holder from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal or Sri Lanka your degree is treated at par with a German Master degree. In some cases, further assessment of eligibility will be required. Do clarify the matter of eligibility with the university or the research organisation of your choice before you send in your application.

Some universities may ask for the proof of your English language proficiency in form of TOEFL or IELTS scores. Some universities may ask for good German language skills depending upon subject of your research. In such cases, your knowledge of German needs to be certified through examinations like the TestDaF  or DSH.

Study in Germany without IELTS

Studying in Germany requires an IELTS, TestDAF or DSH scores. However, students need not worry since plenty of universities offer admissions into their programs without IELTS requirements.

Study in Germany without IELTS

Can I study in Germany without IELTS? International students planning to study in Germany often have this question in their minds. Yes, there are many universities in Germany that accept international students without requiring IELTS scores. However, there are some alternative requirements that students must meet in order to be eligible for admission into such universities.

Depending on what university students apply to, they will have to produce either IELTS or TOEFL scores (for university offering courses in the English language) or TestDAF or DSH scores (for universities with German is the primary medium of instruction). This article will specifically address studying in Germany without IELTS scores.

Table of Contents

Universities to Study in Germany without IELTS

What is ielts, is it possible to study in germany without ielts, types of courses to study in germany without ielts, admission requirements to study in germany without ielts, ielts requirement in germany, german universities accepting 6.0 band ielts scores.

  • Alternatives of IELTS to Study in Germany

There are plenty of universities offering courses to students without a requirement to submit IELTS scores. Some universities to study in German without IELTS scores are as follows:

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System, a standardised English language proficiency test for non-native English speakers. The test is designed to help people work, study, or migrate to countries with English as the primary language.

For Indian students, specifically, for whom English is not the first language (even though it is spoken widely across the nation), IELTS may be a requirement, especially if the course opted for in the accepting university is taught in the English medium.

If a student hasn’t given their IELTS and is looking to study in Germany, the best option is to apply to a university that doesn’t have English as a language of instruction for their courses. Certain situations exempt a student from showing their IELTS scores. These situations are as follows:

  • Students will have to produce a Language/Medium of Instruction Certificate (MOI), which they will need to acquire from the last institution that they had studied in
  • Students having a Bachelor’s degree with the language of instruction being English need not show IELTS scores
  • International students from countries where English is the native language need not submit IELTS scores
  • Students who have pursued their Bachelor’s Degree in English studies or a BA in English Literature need not submit IELTS scores while applying to a university in Germany

Students can opt for two major types of programs for studying in Germany without IELTS; German programs and English programs. The programs offered at universities in Germany are divided based on the medium of instruction.

  • English Programs: These programs are available for students who might have difficulty with the local languages of Germany. Most German universities offer some programs that are taught in English. Students from English-speaking countries like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, can opt for these courses without submitting IELTS scores. Also, those with Bachelor’s Degree in English studies or a BA in English Literature are exempted from submitting IELTS scores.
  • German Programs: Students can opt for programs taught in the German language if they have minimum proficiency in speaking and writing German. As proof of ability, students may have to submit certain German language requirements in the form of B1 and C1 certifications. The level of German language requirements may vary from university to university.

There are some admission essentials that students must keep in mind if they wish to study in Germany without providing IELTS scores. The following are some of the important documents that a student will need to submit as part of the admission procedure when applying for a university in Germany without IELTS:

Medium of Instruction Certificate (MOI)

Confirmation letter, german language course, german student visa.

Students will have to submit a Language/Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate - a valid language certificate - if they wish to study in Germany. The MOI can be procured from the student’s previous academic institution, which confirms that the medium of instruction for the previous course was in the English language.

Upon being accepted into a university in Germany, students should ensure that they receive a confirmation letter from the institution claiming that the MOI has been verified. The student has been exempted from submitting their IELTS or TOEFL scores. Students can use the confirmation letter as a substitute for IELTS/TOEFL scores by submitting it at their local German Embassy or Consulate. The MOI is an important piece of document that a student will require to clear the immigration process.

One of the best ways of staying ahead of the curve regarding studying in Germany is to opt for a German language program. What this means is that the student will have to know how to read and write in German. A student will be required to submit a C1 to B1 level certification in the German language. Additionally, students can provide German-language test scores like TestDAF, DSH and GOETHE, when applying for a university in Germany.

The final and most important step in applying to a German university is to apply for a German student visa. Plenty of information is available online, and students can also visit their local German Embassy or Consulate for more information on the same.

For most German universities, students need to have a minimum IELTS band score of 6.0 or above, along with proof of an excellent academic record. The IELTS score is valid for two years, and students can make as many attempts as possible to get their desired scores. Once the scores are out, students can send their scores to 5 universities within a month of the released scores. If a student has attempted the test more than once, the most recent results will be considered.

The table below contains a list of universities in Germany accepting an overall band score of 6.0 (and above) in IELTS:

Alternatives of IELTS to Study in Germany

You can use the following alternatives as evidence of language proficiency in case you do not have an IELTS score to study in Germany:

  • The requirement to prove proficiency in English can be met through a letter from your previous institution which states that your previous degree was entirely taught in English.
  • There is no requirement for you to submit IELTS scores if your undergraduate program was taught in the English language.
  • In some universities, the students are interviewed to determine their proficiency in the English language.

To make sure which types of English proficiency proof are accepted by the university, it is recommended that you always enquire with them beforehand.

If that is not an option, the university will take an aspirant’s audio-visual interview to check his/her command over the English language. List of Countries to Study Without IELTS 2024: Universities and Eligibility

For students contemplating pursuing their higher studies degree abroad, a common question is “Which country does not require IELTS for masters?” or even “Which country doesn't need IELTS to study?”

These tests, which assess a student’s ability to read, write, and speak English, can pose a significant challenge for non-native English speakers. Despite IELTS / TOEFL scores being a major admission criterion, there are universities across the globe that offer admissions without these scores.

This article will provide a list of 8 countries to study in without IELTS or TOEFL in 2024, which allows you to pursue your dream of studying abroad without the burden of qualifying for a language proficiency test.

Study in the USA without IELTS

Studying in the USA is a dream for many students around the world. However, the requirement of IELTS (International English Language Testing System) often poses a challenge. But what if we told you that it’s possible to study in the USA without IELTS? Yes, there are numerous universities and colleges in the USA that offer admissions to international students without the IELTS score.

Following are some of the universities in the US that you can get into without IELTS or TOEFL scores.

University of Colorado Boulder: If the following conditions are met then you need not submit the English language proficiency proof

  • The student’s native language is English
  • The applying student has completed at least one year of full-time academic study at a U.S. institution. However, countries like Botswana, Ghana, South Africa, and Nigeria are not subjected to this arrangement.

Drexel University: You need to complete two programs- the University Preparation Summer Program (UPREP) and the Bridge Program for international students if you don’t meet the language requirement.

The following universities grant admission to international students provided that they undertake the Intensive English Language Program (IELP).

  • State University of New York
  • University of Arkansas
  • University of Dayton

You are exempted from showing language proficiency proof if you attended secondary school or/and graduate school where you were taught in English. California State University waives the minimum English requirement for a few countries.

  • California State University
  • University of New Orleans

Other universities where you can pursue your studies without bothering about IELTS/TOEFL scores are:

  • University of Delaware
