About this degree

A world-class research centre, UCL Eastman Dental Institute offers you a range of doctorate research opportunities in the fields of oral health and society, microbial diseases, clinical research, and biomaterials tissue engineering.

You will undertake a research project under the supervision of at least one of the institute's international specialists, who will support and guide you in your reporting, presentations, and networking. The nature of your project can be defined by you or your supervisor, depending on availability and funding. It is expected the project will involve basic science but may also be clinically relevant.

The UCL Eastman Dental Institute undertakes high-quality research that advances knowledge of the causes, treatment, and prevention of orofacial and related disease. We then translate those findings into improved clinical care and public policy. The institute has many long-standing research collaborations with international universities and industrial sponsors. You will also benefit from interaction with other UCL research groups and with NHS hospitals close to the university.

You can choose to do your research full-time over three years or part-time over five years.

Who this course is for

This programme is well suited to scientists, dentists, medics and other medical professionals who want to pursue a laboratory or clinically based doctorate. Opportunities are available in a range of topics including oral health, microbial diseases and biomaterials and tissue engineering with an emphasis on translational research. We welcome applicants from the UK and around the world.

What this course will give you

This programme offers you the following benefits and opportunities.

  • The opportunity to pursue novel scientific or clinical research under the guidance of experienced supervisors.
  • The chance to contribute to studies that improve, and have a positive impact upon, oral and systemic health through innovative, translational, and high-quality research.
  • The resources and support of a world-class research centre dedicated to basic, applied, and translational research allied to dentistry and oral health.
  • The opportunity to develop and refine your research skills and confidence by working directly with established academics in your chosen field of research.
  •  A highly collaborative research department.
  • The chance to become involved in research groups in allied departments as well as with outside partners in other universities worldwide, and potentially with industrial SME and large multinational companies.
  • Opportunities to contribute towards collaborative scientific publications, to publish your own research findings in peer reviewed journals, and to produce conference abstracts for poster or verbal presentations at local, national, and international conferences.
  • Advice on future career paths from academics with a broad range of experience.

The foundation of your career

A PhD from UCL Eastman will make you an attractive candidate for roles in research, academia or industry, particularly pharmaceutical companies. Due to the reputation of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, our graduates are sought-after in the field of dentistry worldwide.

Employability

Many graduates continue onto further research or take up academic positions at leading universities around the world. You will also be equipped to enter managerial or research positions in the health service, government, or industry, in the UK or further afield.

Throughout your programme, you will be encouraged to attend, and contribute to, conferences in the UK and internationally. Each year, the institute allocates funding to support those who want to travel to a conference or comparable event to present a paper or poster based on their work.

The institute also hosts a variety of speakers throughout the year, and you will be encouraged to attend these talks and network with your peers.

At the institute's annual PhD Research Symposium, you will have the chance to highlight your research projects through oral and poster presentations.

Teaching and learning

Most of your research will be carried out independently. There will also be a series of training requirements that you will need to complete in the early stages of the programme. UCL Doctoral School also provides a wide range of useful course you may wish to participate in, including thesis writing, presentation skills and statistical analysis.

Your first milestone will be to upgrade from MPhil to the PhD postgraduate research degree status. For this, you will need to submit and present a research report together with an interview known as a viva examination. In your final year, you submit a complete thesis covering your research and a formal discussion of your research is held at a viva examination.

Most of your time will be spent conducting independent research, alongside regular meetings with your supervisory team and completing your training requirements. We also encourage you to attend relevant research events at UCL and elsewhere.

Research areas and structure

UCL Eastman Institute seeks to improve and make positive impact upon oral and systemic health through innovative and high-quality research. The institute has a global reputation in its three key areas of interest - Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Clinical Research and Microbial Diseases . During their research programme, the students will be expected to undertake a research project under the supervision of at least one member of the institute's academic staff. The nature of the project can be defined by either the academic supervisor or by the applicant, depending on both availability and method of funding. It is however expected that the nature of the research project will be on basic science but may be clinically relevant depending on the project.

Research environment

The UCL Eastman Dental Institute is the largest postgraduate dental school in Europe and has a reputation as one of the world’s leading academic centres for dentistry. You will join a community of 80-100 research students enrolled within the UCL Eastman Centre for Postgraduate Research (UCL ECPgR), a virtual body for research students within the UCL Eastman Dental Institute.

With a focus on biomaterials and tissue engineering, clinical research, oral health and society and microbial diseases, the institute seeks to improve and make a positive impact upon oral and systemic health through innovative, translational, and high-quality research.

The institute's ambitious clinical research programme focuses on translational (experimental) medicine, including clinical trials of repurposed drugs, novel diagnostics, novel drugs and devices, and improvements in treatment selection and evaluation of response. Eastman achieved a good outcome in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) and has one of the strongest NIHR-funded translational portfolios in dentistry with world-leading publications.

Our researchers are experts in early first-in-human clinical studies and large multicentre phase III trials, including Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs) and non-CTIMPs studies. Our researchers are leaders in their fields, with many having pivotal roles in other organisations such as the Longitude Prize, EPSRC, NIHR and IADR as well as being editors of prominent journals. Our grant success is derived from numerous sponsors, such as ERC, NIHR, EPSRC, which reflects the wide range of our research activities.

Several NHS hospitals are located nearby for collaborative research. University College Hospital London (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust, Royal National ENT, and Eastman Dental Hospital, Macmillan Cancer Centre, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery and Royal London Hospital of Integrated Medicine are all within walking distance of the campus.

When you accept your place on the programme, you will initially register for an MPhil.

During your first term, you will receive an induction to the research environment with the chance to attend optional research methods modules designed to develop your skills as an academic researcher.

Within three months of joining the programme, you will be expected to agree the basic structure of your research project with your supervisor, along with the appropriate research methods and a realistic plan of your work.

You will then need to submit a detailed outline of your proposed research for comments and feedback before you are ready to undertake the project as part of your supervisor’s research team.

You will be eligible to upgrade to PhD student status between 9-18 months into the programme. Upgrade decisions are based on an evaluation of an upgrade report, which you will draft with the support of your supervisors, as well as assessment by viva examination. You will also present your research work to an audience of UCL Eastman academic and clinical staff, and fellow PhD students.

After your upgrade, you will continue to explore your research hypothesis, complete your data collection and analysis, and prepare your thesis.

In your second year, you will be encouraged to produce a poster presentation of your research project, followed by a verbal presentation in your third year. You are also encouraged to write and submit manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present your research findings at local, national, and international conferences.

Following the third year of registration, you may transfer to what is termed 'completing research status' (CRS) for one year to complete your thesis writing and final viva examination.

If you want to fit the studies around work or other commitments, you can opt for a five-year, part-time programme.

During your first term, you receive an induction to the research environment with the chance to attend optional research methods modules designed to develop your skills as an academic researcher.

Within six months of joining the programme, you will be expected to agree the basic structure of your research project with your supervisor, along with the appropriate research methods and a realistic plan of your work.

You will be eligible to upgrade to PhD student status between 15-30 months into the programme. Upgrade decisions are based on an evaluation of an upgrade report, which you will draft with the support of your primary and subsidiary supervisors, as well as assessment by viva examination. You also present your research to an audience of UCL Eastman academic and clinical staff and fellow PhD students.

In your second or third year, you will be encouraged to produce a poster presentation of your research project, followed by a verbal presentation in your fourth or fifth year. You will also be encouraged to write and submit manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present your research findings at local, national, and international conferences.

Following the fifth year of registration, you may transfer to what is termed 'completing research status' (CRS) for two years to complete your thesis writing and final viva examination.

Student Testimonials

I started my PhD at the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research and have had a great experience. It is such a supportive environment and there are many opportunities for career development and collaboration with other groups within the centre. Seminars are run regularly, which encourages discussion on current research topics and promotes critical thinking and the centre also coordinates many public engagement events. This teaches us to communicate our science to a lay audience and keep in touch with the people we are doing all this research for, which is very rewarding. I will soon be writing up my final year thesis and believe the skills I have developed and the opportunities I have been given by Queen’s leaves me in a great position when I begin applying for jobs.
Whilst I’m a Belfast native, I didn’t complete my Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at Queen’s. However, after attending Universities in Leeds, Melbourne, Gothenburg and Shanghai, I decided it was time to return to my home city to undertake my PhD at the Centre for Public Health. Two years in and I’m so happy with my decision. I feel very supported and valued here and have had the opportunity to get involved in various things outside of my research which has allowed me to develop personally and has enriched my experience at Queen’s.

Research Information

Associated Research The School has current collaborative partnerships with the NIH National Cancer Institute (Washington) and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Toronto), together with developing relationships with international institutions in the Middle East, such as Hashemite University (Zarqa, Jordan). In addition, some of our current students conduct the majority of their research abroad (currently US and China) with supervisors from both QUB and the external institution. The School also supports short-term research training opportunities for its postgraduate students in the groups of international collaborators; these enriching experiences not only benefit the project but provide valuable insight into research in a global context.

Research Themes Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research The global burden of cancer is increasing with incidence now at 15 million new diagnoses each year. The Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research (PGJCCR) is attuned to this global health issue and specialises in integrating academic discovery, industrial/commercial enterprise and innovative health care practice to promote effective delivery of precision cancer medicine, to improve patient health and outcomes, generate wealth and alleviate suffering. PGJCCR has established successful multi-disciplinary teams focusing on cancers of Gastrointestinal, Prostate, Breast and Ovarian origin. Each team incorporates disease-specialist clinicians, accredited molecular pathology expertise bringing affiliated biobank tissue repositories, and academics skilled in the art of (i) biomarker discovery and bioinformatics, (ii) biological investigation and therapeutic development, and (iii) the prosecution of early-phase translation-driven clinical trials. Our significant success has resulted from a strong team-based approach. Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine The Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine (WWIEM) is committed to research excellence by making scientific breakthroughs in the mechanisms of disease, which we translate to innovative therapeutics to improve patient outcomes. We are an international hub of excellence on eye disease, infectious diseases and respiratory disease with a core emphasis on immunology, molecular cell biology and patient-based investigations. WWIEM comprises three main research themes focussed on Immunology and Microbes, Respiratory Medicine, and Vision and Vascular Medicine. Learning Outcomes

As a postgraduate student in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences you will receive high-quality training and support for a career in scientific research with significant potential to contribute to development of improved strategies for the management and treatment of life-threatening diseases.

Course structure

1. The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to providing its postgraduate research students with a supportive environment to effectively promote their education, training and professional development. First year students enrol on a tailored training programme comprising a series of lectures, workshops and practical sessions focused on key research skills, including bioimaging, informatics, genomics, mass spectrometry, animal models and clinical trials. In addition, all students receive wide-ranging and ongoing training in generic and transferable skills, such as scientific writing, data analysis, presentation and critical appraisal, through dedicated communication courses and seminars. They also benefit from presentation of their research findings at major national and international conferences, which is an expectation of all postgraduate research students, and through regular interaction with the QUB Graduate School, whose specific function is to support postgraduate training, development and careers. Students undertake their specific research project under the close guidance of an experienced principal supervisor with support from 1 or 2 co-supervisors as appropriate. All postgraduate research students are initially registered as ‘undifferentiated’ which means that they are required to complete a probationary period after which they are assessed for their suitability to undertake a postgraduate research degree during the differentiation process. Differentiation normally takes place at 9-12 months for full time students and 18-24 months for part time students. Each student is required to complete a literature review, give an oral presentation of their research within their Centre, and provide evidence of appropriate training and completion of their Postgraduate Development Plan. They are then interviewed by a differentiation panel, comprising 2 or 3 academic staff, who assess the students understanding of their project and progress, based on both their submitted paperwork and response to questions. Differentiated students are required to complete a similar Annual Progress Review process in each subsequent year of their research degree. The duration of a full-time PhD programme is normally 3-4 years. For completion of their doctoral qualification students are required to submit a thesis of their research of appropriate length and content (as advised by their supervisors) which will be assessed by oral examination conducted by an external and internal examiner. Funded postgraduate research studentships are advertised on the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences website: https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/mdbs/Study/PostgraduateResearch/CurrentOpportunities/ . We will also consider applications from externally or self-funded students who should identify potential academic supervisors aligned with their research interests: https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/mdbs/Research/find-a-phd-supervisor/ Please note that we can only support projects which fit within the overall research strategy of the School and individual research focus of our academic staff. Our academic staff welcome approaches from prospective students and are happy to develop research proposals of mutual interest. Often this process will involve an informal face-to-face meeting (in person or via teleconferencing) prior to an invitation to submit a formal application. If you have difficulty identifying or contacting an appropriate supervisor, please contact Professor AJ McKnight, Director of Postgraduate Research, [email protected], or the School Postgraduate Office, [email protected], who will be happy to help. Students who meet the eligibility criteria for postgraduate research and are keen to propose their own research project should select ONE potential supervisor from our list of academic staff per application, https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/mdbs/Research/find-a-phd-supervisor/, and send an email containing: (1) a brief CV (1-2 pages maximum), (2) a concise statement of motivation including research interests, (3) source of funding, and (4) intended start date. Our Faculty student recruitment hub will also be able to provide further information: [email protected]. For students applying for a funded or competitively funded PhD, please provide a concise statement of motivation, including research interests and research experience as relevant to the studentship for which you are applying.

Postgraduate students in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences will receive ongoing training in scientific writing, presentation and critical analysis as the basis for a research career. The School supports and challenges its postgraduate research students through robust annual progress review, requiring satisfactory assessment of written work, symposia presentations, supervisor reports and panel interview, the success of which is evidenced by its excellent completion rates. At the end of their postgraduate research training period, students are required to submit a thesis of their research of appropriate length and content which is assessed by oral examination conducted by an external and internal examiner.

Postgraduate research students in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences receive feedback on their written and oral work throughout the period of registration for their degree. This may be both formal and informal and is provided regularly by their supervisors, peers, academic/postdoctoral colleagues, and annual progress review panel.

Postgraduate students in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences benefit from world-class infrastructure and academic faculty and are highly valued as a central and critical component of its research strategy. All students will have access to shared laboratory and office space as required by their research project. https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/mdbs/

A mum claims dental implants left her face with the ‘worst bruising ever’ – leaving her looking like a human ‘Rorschach inkblot test’.

Jessica Macko had been experiencing ‘agonising’ pain as an eating disorder she’d had when she was younger had ‘eroded’ all her teeth.

The 44-year-old decided to have All-on-4 dental implants earlier this month [April 2] to fix her ongoing dental issues, a procedure where a set of four dental implants replace ‘loose, rotten, missing or failing teeth’.

While she had been warned by doctors about bruising, the stay-at-home mum admits she did not expect the pain to be so ‘brutal’ nor the bruising to be so severe.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

The model posted a video of her face on day four after the treatment stating she looked like a ‘monster’ and asking for others to reach out to her if they had ever had a similar reaction to the procedure.

The ‘horrific’ deep purple bruising began at her neck and chin and spread across her face, getting worse hour by hour, even reaching up to underneath her eyes.

Now two weeks later, the bruising and swelling has gone down considerably and the mum-of-three would still recommend the procedure, believing her extreme bruising to be a ‘unique’ case.

Jessica, from San Antonio, Texas, US, said: ‘The doctors did say I’d have some bruising.

‘The day after I had the implants put in, my face swelled up humongously then the bruising started the day after that.

‘I got quite scared. It just kept getting worse and worse every hour.

‘It looked like I had a Rorschach blot test on my face, like the inkblots.

‘I tend to bruise badly but I’ve never experienced anything like that before.

‘I’m an artist so it was kind of cool to watch but it was horrific because I’d never seen bruising like that on anyone’s face.

‘It was on my chin and my neck, they were the most swollen and then it spread up and hit my nose and my under eye. It covered pretty much my whole face below my eyes.

‘It hurt so much. For them to take out like all your teeth, I guess it just causes a lot of trauma but I had no choice because I was just having constant dental pain.

PIC FROM Kennedy News and Media (PICTURED: JESSICA MACKO, 44, FROM TEXAS, BEFORE HAVING DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY WHICH LEFT HER WITH SEVERE BRUISING) A mum claims dental implants implants left her face with the 'worst bruising ever' - leaving her looking like a human 'Rorschach inkblot test'. Jessica Macko had been experiencing 'agonising' pain as an eating disorder she'd had when she was younger had 'eroded' all her teeth. The 44-year-old decided to have All-on-4 dental implants earlier this month [April 2nd] to fix her ongoing dental issues, a procedure where a set of four dental implants replace 'loose, rotten, missing or failing teeth'.DISCLAIMER: While Kennedy News and Media uses its best endeavours to establish the copyright and authenticity of all pictures supplied, it accepts no liability for any damage, loss or legal action caused by the use of images supplied and the publication of images is solely at your discretion. ‘I had no idea the pain would be that bad before I had it. I did not understand the brutality of it.’

Jessica’s dental problems began when she was younger due to an eating disorder.

She added: ‘Thankfully I’m healthy now and I’m better but part of getting the new teeth was my healing process.

‘My teeth were all pretty much failing due to some health issues and I was in agonising pain.

‘I was having all-on-fours dental implants. They put two screws in the top and two screws in the bottom to anchor the teeth in.

‘The first week I could not sleep at all or eat, I would just cry at night.

‘I went immediately back to my doctor when the bruising turned up.

Now fully healed, Jessica says she'd reccommend the surgery to anyone

‘He explained that it was always a possibility and said he’d even seen one person with it worse.

‘I’m also anaemic so that could cause bruising to be worse and obviously because it is just such a big trauma to the area, it’s not unheard of.”

Despite the bruising, which she believes may have been worsened due to her anaemia, Jessica has no regrets about the surgery and would encourage others to get it.

Jessica said: ‘It’s gotten a lot better now. I went to MAC and got makeup to cover the bruising. I think by the end of the month it should be fully healed.

‘My advice to others thinking of getting dental implants would be that it is such a great option, it helps so many people and I’d definitely recommend it and that my case was just unique.

‘I’d 100% recommend the surgery.’
