1. Structural Damage: Earthquakes can cause extensive damage to buildings, bridges, and infrastructure, leading to loss of lives and property.

2. Tsunamis and Landslides: Earthquakes can trigger tsunamis and landslides, which further contribute to the devastation and loss of human life.

(b)  Identify any two types of landforms made by any geological agents found in your area. Write a brief note on the formation of any one landform. (See Lesson-4)

Q. Explain the composition of Atmosphere.

(A) Gases of the atmosphere:

The atmosphere is the mixture of different types of gases, including water vapour and dust particles. Nitrogen and Oxygen are the two main gases of the atmosphere. 99 percent part of it is made up of these two gases. Other gases like organ, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nion, helium etc. form the remaining part of atmosphere.

Ozone Gas : The amount of ozone gas in the atmosphere is very little. It is limited to the ozone layer but it is very important. It protects the living beings by absorbing the ultraviolet rays of the sun. If there was no ozone gas in the atmosphere, there would not have been existence of living beings and plants on the earth surface.

(B) Water vapour: Gaseous form of water present in the atmosphere is called water vapour. Water vapour present in the atmosphere has made life possible on the earth Water vapour is the source of all kinds of precipitation. Its maximum amount in the atmosphere could be upto 4 percent. Maximum amount of water vapour is found in hot-wet regions and its least amount is found in the dry regions. Generally, the amount of water vapour goes on decreasing from low latitudes to high latitudes.

(C) Dust Particles: Dust particles are generally found in the lower layers of the atmosphere. These particles are found in the form of sand, smoke and oceanic salt. Sand particle have important place in the atmosphere. These dust particles help in the condensation of water vapour

Q. Mention the importance of the Atmosphere.

(i)    Oxygen is very important for the living beings.

(ii)   Carbon dioxide is very useful for the plants.

(iii) Dust particles present in the atmosphere create suitable conditions for the precipitation.

(iv)    The amount of water vapour in the atmosphere goes on changing and directly affects the plants and living beings.

(v) Ozone protects all kinds of life on the earth from the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun

Q. Describe the Structure of the Atmosphere.

The atmosphere can be divided into five layers according to the diversity of temperature and density.

1.        Troposphere :

a.        This is the lowest layer of the atmosphere.

b.       The height of this layer is about 18 kms on the equator and 8 kms on the poles. The main reason of higher height at the equator is due to presence of hot convection currents that push the gases upward.

c.        This is the most important layer of the atmosphere because all kinds of weather changes take place only in this layer. Due to these changes development of living world take place on the earth. The air never remains static in this layer. Therefore this layer is called changing sphere or troposphere.

d.       The environmental temperature decreases with increasing height of atmosphere. It decreases at the rate of 10C at the height of 165 metre. This is called Normal lapse rate .

e.       The upper limit of the troposphere is called tropopause . This is a transitional zone. In this zone characteristics of both the troposphere and ionosphere are found.

2.        Stratosphere:

a.        This layer is above the troposphere.

b.       This layer is spread upto the height of 50 kms from the Earth’s surface. Its average extent 40 kms.

c.        The temperature remains almost the same in the lower part of this layer upto the height of 20 kms. After this the temperature increases slowly with the increase in the height. The temperature increases due to the presence of ozone gas in the upper part of this layer.

d.       Weather related incidents do not take place in this layer. The air blows horizontally here. Therefore this layer is considered ideal for flying of aircrafts

3.        Mesosphere:

a.        It is the third layer of the atmosphere spreading over stratosphere.

b.       It spreads upto the height of 80 kms. from the surface of the earth. It’s extent is 30 kms.

c.        Temperature goes on decreasing and drops upto – 1000C.

d.       ‘Meteors’ or falling stars occur in this layer.

4.        Ionosphere:

a.        This is the fourth layer of the atmosphere. It is located above the mesosphere.

b.       This layer spreads upto the height of 400 kms. from the surface of the earth. The width of this layer is about 300 kms.

c.        The temperature starts increasing again with increasing height in this layer.

d.       Electrically charged currents flows in the air in this sphere. Radio waves are reflected back on the earth from this sphere and due to this radio broadcasting has become possible.

5.        Exosphere:

a.        This is the last layer of the atmosphere located above ionosphere and extends to beyond 400 km above the earth.

b.       Gases are very sparse in this sphere due to the lack of gravitational force. Therefore, the density of air is very less here.

Ans. Geography is often called the mother of all sciences. There is some truth in it. We study that the earth’s surface is ever changing. The natural phenomena like mountains, rivers, lakes etc. changing slowly while cultural elements like building roads, crops change fast. Nature was the most important object of curiosity.

Another aspect of geography is to understand the factors or reasons behind area differentiation how to social, cultural, economic and demographic factors change physical landscapes and create a new one. Geography also investigate what and where on the earth is going on and why is it there. All these phenomena are related to geography. That is why geography is called the mother of all sciences.

(iii) What are the two basic approaches in geography?

Ans. There are two main approaches in geography:

(a) Systematic geography.

(b) Regional geography. Nature of Geography As a Discipline.

(iv) What are the four phases of development of geography?

Ans. The four phases of development of geography are:

1. Ancient period.

2. Pre-modern period.

3. Modern period.

4. Recent period.

(v) Define the term physical and human geography.

Ans. Physical Geography: Physical geography is concerned with the study and explaining of physical phenomena and the other such fields like geology, meteorology, zoology and chemistry. It has several sub-branches which treat different kinds of physical phenomena.

Human Geography: Human geography is the systematic study of the relationship between human societies and the earth’s surface. It is made of three closely linked components-the population, relationship between human and environment and regional synthesis. There are several branches of human geography such Anthropogeography, economic geography and cultural geography etc.

Q.3. Why is human geography an important part of geography? Explain with suitable examples.

Ans. Human geography is an important part of geography. It deals with manmade features like agriculture, settlements, factories, roads etc. Human geography is the systematic study of the relationship between human societies and the earth’s surface. It is made up of three closely linked components: the spatial analysis of the human population, the ecological analysis of the relationship between human population and its environment and the regional synthesis. That is why human geography is an important part of geography.

Q.4. Discuss the techniques of geographical studies.

Ans. Geography has its tools and techniques. Important among them are globes, maps, diagrams etc. Cartography is concerned with preparation of maps and diagrams to show distinction of geographical phenomena.

Maps have traditionally been made using pen,ink and paper, but computers have revolutionised cartography and with GIS methods one can prepare maps and diagrams with greater choice and efficiency.

Spatial data is obtained from measurement and other published sources and can be stored in a database, from which it can be extracted for a variety of purposes.

6. Prepare any one project out of the given below:

(a) Conduct a survey with the help of your family for sustainable use of energy resources. Make effort to know that the sources of energy used for various activity are conventional or non-conventional. For this purpose, collect information in following format:

Prepare a report of 200 words that at what extent the non-conventional sources of energy can be used at your home to fulfill the energy requirements.

(b) Discuss with elders in your family and neighbourhood and try to know that on which sources of water they were dependent for various activities. Try to know that what measures they were using to conserve water. On the basis of information received, make a list of resources used in present. Are these measures to conserve water still used? On the basis of this information prepare a report of 200 words to suggest measures of water conservation for your area.

1. निम्नलिखित में से किसी एक प्रश्न का उत्तर लगभग 40-60 शब्दों में दीजिए।

(क) ‘अपक्षय में मनुष्य एक प्रभावी भूमिका निभाता है।’ अपने मत के पक्ष में कोई दो तर्क दीजिए।

(ख) आपके क्षेत्र में पाए जाने वाली किन्हीं दो प्रकार की भू-आकृतियों की पहचान कीजिए। प्रत्येक भू-आकृति के निर्माण हेतु उत्तरदायी कोई एक बिन्दु लिखिए।

2. निम्नलिखित में से किसी एक प्रश्न का उत्तर लगभग 40-60 शब्दों में दीजिए।

(क) ‘वायुमंडल में जलवाष्प की अनुपस्थिति में धरातल पर किस प्रकार की घटनाएँ घटित हो सकती हैं? कोई दो बिन्दु लिखिए।

(ख) अगर आपके क्षेत्र में वायुदाब रेखाएँ पास-पास हों तो आप किस प्रकार की मौसमी दशाएँ अनुभव करेंगे और क्यों?

3. निम्नलिखित में से किसी एक प्रश्न का उत्तर लगभग 40-60 शब्दों में दीजिए।

(क) ‘वर्षण के प्रादेशिक वितरण में विषुवतीय क्षेत्र से ध्रुवों की ओर सामान्य रूप से कम होने की   प्रवृत्ति पाई जाती है। कोई दो बिन्दु देते हुए कथन को सिद्ध कीजिए।

(ख) आपके घर में उपलब्ध जीवों के आधार पर एक खाद्य जाल बनाइए। इस खाद्यजाल से आप कैसे जुड़े हैं?

4. निम्नलिखित में से किसी एक प्रश्न का उत्तर लगभग 100-150 शब्दों में दीजिए।

(क) पिछले दो वर्षों में भारत में घटित किन्ही दो प्राकृतिक विपदाओं की पहचान कीजिए और इनके घटित होने का कारण दीजिए। इन विपदाओं को नियंत्रित करने के दो उपाय सुझाइए।

(ख) ‘भारत में मात्स्यिकी के लिए उपयुक्त परिस्थितियाँ इसके विकास के विशाल अवसर निर्मित करती हैं।’ कोई चार तर्क देकर इस कथन की पुष्टि कीजिए।

5. निम्नलिखित में से किसी एक प्रश्न का उत्तर लगभग 100-150 शब्दों में दीजिए।

(क) पहचान कीजिए कि आपके क्षेत्र में दीवार और छत के निर्माण के लिए किस प्रकार की भवन निर्माण   सामग्री प्रयोग की जाती है।

(ख) ‘स्थानीय संसाधनों का आवश्यकता के आधार पर उपयोग आर्थिक रूप से टिकाऊ होता है। उपयुक्त उदाहरणों के साथ इस कथन को सिद्ध कीजिए।

6. नीचे दी गई परियोजनाओं में से कोई एक परियोजना तैयार कीजिए।

(क) अपने क्षेत्र में उपलब्ध परिवहन के संसाधनों का सर्वेक्षण कीजिए और उपलब्ध संसाधनों की एक सूची बनाइए। अब अपने परिवार या आस-पड़ोस के बुजुर्गों से चर्चा कीजिए और पता लगाइए कि पहले वे किस प्रकार के परिवहन के साधनों का प्रयोग करते थे। प्राप्त परिणाम के आधार पर अपने क्षेत्र में परिवहन साधनों के बदलते स्वरूप पर एक रिपोर्ट लिखिए।

(ख) दी गयी तालिका के द्वारा कम से कम 10 परिवारों का एक सर्वेक्षण कीजिए कि वे संचार के किन साधनों का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं।

यह भी जानने का प्रयास कीजिए कि इन साधनों का प्रयोग लगभग कब से उन्होंने शुरू किया है। आधार पर संचार के साधनों की उपलब्धता और उसके बदलते रूप पर एक रिपोर्ट तैयार कीजिए ।
