As part of your application to study with us, you’ll be asked to submit a personal statement. Your personal statement is your chance to show your understanding of the course, your interest in the subject and how your current skills and knowledge are relevant to the course you’d like to study. Each course we offer is different, so please read your course content carefully.

Show your skills and interests

None of our courses is purely practical and all involve a significant amount of theoretical study and research. Your personal statement should, therefore, show your academic skills. If you're applying to study a course with practical elements (eg BA Digital Media, BA Film, Photography and Media or BA Journalism), you should also talk about any practical skills you have. You might also consider linking to examples of your work.

Your personal statement should also explain why you're interested in studying your course. To do this, you could discuss examples of media that have caught your attention and any readings you've completed.

Media, Culture and Society Personal Statement

Media is the backbone of our society. In the twenty-first century, it is inevitable that we are all influenced in some way. For several years now I have had a fascination with the role media plays in our society, from the way we are socialised to believe what is right and wrong, to how the industry giants filter information to our TV, mobile and computer devices. I have been greatly influenced by innovative technology and its unremitting relationship with social media, allowing me to be up to date at a click of a button. This is why I have such an admiration for both the industry and an excitement of future possibilities within this course. 

I am currently studying Film Studies, Communication & Culture and Sociology at A level. In addition, during my first year at college, I completed AS Media Studies. I have come to realise that there is a strong connection between each of the subject areas and feel that progressing to further study of Media and Sociology, is of most interest to me. In Film Studies, I have been particularly intrigued by the way film acts as a mirror to society. This idea was evident in a recent piece of work in which I explored social realism in 1960s kitchen sink drama films such as ‘Billy Liar’ and ‘Alfie’. I have enjoyed developing my ability to analyse and critique society, supported by a sound grasp of research methodology. Sociology and Communication & Culture have particularly helped in this regard. I have also appreciated the opportunity to keep using my mathematic skills in Sociology to interpret and critically use data and statistical research. Communication & Culture has provided a bridge between my other subjects – especially around the study of culture, teaching me to use classical sociological theories in the modern media, such as Stanley Cohen’s theory of ‘Folk Devils and Moral Panics’. At school I was elected to be a member of the school council committee, allowing me to voice the thoughts and feelings of my peers. I was also chosen to be a School Prefect. These roles allowed me to develop my leadership and communication skills, vital in group discussions. I have played football in a team since the age of eight, and in recent years had the honour of becoming club captain. My aptitude for leadership was exercised allowing me to encourage and lead my teammates to success through direction, discussion and recognising their strengths. I have furthered these skills through a part time job in Sainsbury’s Restaurant, which has taught me the rewards of hard work and good time keeping, attributes that I will benefit from in higher education. During my work experience placement at Snell Advanced Media I focused on the way in which TV is distributed to the public. I learnt the infinite values speed and competition have in today’s society. I have attended several international field trips to culturally diverse destinations including Berlin and New York. I found New York was the highlight as it was an invaluable experience that showed the sheer range of diverse cultures in such a small area; a topic I believe would be an interesting area of study. Our visits included Radio City Music Hall and the World Trade Centre Memorial, both of which have such historical media connections. This first hand experience has increased my hunger to study other diverse cultures from around the world; this course enabling me to attain this. 

The course I have chosen is ideal for me to continue my study of the media and our society, and how they have such a significant affect on one another. I believe that not only the course, but also university life as a whole will develop who I am as a person, increasing my confidence through meeting new people and developing specific skills whilst taking the opportunity to learn within the industry. Although I am unsure, as yet, of which career path to take after Higher Education, I am adamant that this course will guide me to a decision.

As I have progressed through my own study in the field, I have been enthused by growth of my own understanding of both the analysis and creation of media forms and am keen to learn more that I may, ultimately, pass this understanding on to others.

I am currently studying towards the Diploma in Creative and Media; which has provided an excellent balance between teaching textual analysis and enhancing my understanding of the media’s effects and introducing me to the industrial aspects of working within the field. It has also proven to be an excellent development of my previous study of Media to BTEC level (completed in January 2009) and, I believe, my consistently solid grades throughout these two courses exhibit my overarching and ongoing interests and commitments within the field.

I have also taken every exciting opportunity throughout my schooling to gain both specific and transferable skills through work experience and volunteering. My work experience placement within my school’s City Learning Centre (CLC) introduced me to the realities and pressures of the working world, as I was tasked with creating a website from scratch within the two-week period. Alongside the technical and design aspects of the build, I also found that I quickly evolved strong teamwork skills, which are essential for working on collaborative project work at undergraduate level. Leading a team for part of the project also showed me that I possessed, and enjoyed using, good leadership skills and guiding others through processes that they previously did not understand. This experience, combined with my strong belief that an understanding of the media is crucial for everyone, has inspired me to look into teaching Media Studies as a potential future career. Working as a mentor to a Year 7 student has also proven a rewarding experience, adding to my potential future teaching ambitions by giving me a better idea of what is involved while also allowing me to play an active role in my school community.

Playing an active role in my community has also been a strong motivator in my extra-curricular activities. I am a keen sportsman and was the captain of my local football team for 3 years, leading them to two finals. This position was a good chance to demonstrate how strong leadership and teamwork work in tandem to produce good results. As an amateur boxer, my relationship between my coaching team and myself has also demonstrated the value of this dynamic from another perspective. Taking the determination and commitment I have learnt through these activities into my weekend job as a waiter has allowed me to quickly be offered extra responsibilities, proving my ability to apply these same positive attributes in all areas of my life.

Having shown commitment, ability and a hardworking attitude in all activities, I believe that I have what it takes to become a valuable contribution to any course or university. More importantly, I also believe that my strong passion for my subject will not only help me to succeed but will also inspire others, whether through working as a team at undergraduate level or fulfilling my ultimate goal of passing my knowledge onto subsequent generations through teaching.

Here is what Stormy Daniels testified happened between her and Donald Trump

Porn performer Stormy Daniels took the witness stand Tuesday in the hush money case against former President Trump, who looked on as she detailed their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she got to keep it quiet.

Prosecutors allege Trump paid Daniels to keep quiet about the allegations as he ran for president in 2016. Her testimony aired them very publicly as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee seeks to win the White House again.

Trump denies having sex with Daniels , and his lawyers unsuccessfully pushed for a mistrial midway through her testimony.

It was a major spectacle in the first criminal trial of a former American president, now in its third week of testimony in Manhattan.

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner, she said. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff.” He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

Payments for silence

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential, and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter, and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission . She said she learned that Cohen wanted to buy her silence.

Mistrial push

Midway through her testimony, Trump’s lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels’ testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter’s details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered that Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

Trump’s lawyers tried to attack Daniels’ credibility, suggesting she was motivated by money and that her account has shifted over the years.

“Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” defense lawyer Susan Necheles asked Daniels at one point. Daniels acknowledged she did.

“And you want him to go to jail?” the lawyer asked.

“I want him to be held accountable,” Daniels said. Pressed again whether that meant going to jail, she said: “If he’s convicted.”

The defense pressed Daniels on the fact that she owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees stemming from an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit, and on a 2022 tweet in which she said she “will go to jail before I pay a penny.” Daniels dug in at times in the face of pointed questions, forcefully denying the idea that she had tried to extort money from Trump.

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared. He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

On the way out of the courthouse, Trump called it “a very revealing day.” He didn’t address Daniels’ testimony explicitly but claimed the prosecutors’ case was “totally falling apart.”

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels’ testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, President Biden was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism .

It’s an issue Trump has sought to use against Biden in the campaign by seizing on the protests at college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war .

Rep. Eshoo Statement on the Passing of Former Congressman Pete McCloskey

Washington, D.C. – Representative Anna G. Eshoo (CA-16) released the following statement today on the death of Congressman Pete McCloskey:

“With the passing of former Congressman Pete McCloskey, our nation has lost a great patriot, a maverick, and a gutsy leader who believed that one of the greatest expressions of love for one’s country was to speak out when the country has lost its way and demand that our nation live up to its ideals of truth, liberty, and justice.

“Over his 16 years in Congress, Pete McCloskey passed the Endangered Species Act of 1973, created the first Earth Day, led the call for President Richard Nixon’s resignation, and bravely exposed what he called the “cruelty and futility” of the Vietnam War. His moral compass guided him as a decorated Marine, a Republican House Representative, a candidate for president, an attorney, and an environmental warrior. The Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful, shaped his life and his legacy.

“It is a high honor to represent the congressional district once held by Pete McCloskey and a privilege to call him my friend, role model, and mentor. My heart and my thoughts are with Helen, Pete’s beloved wife, his children, Nancy, Peter, John, and Kathleen, and his countless friends who said thank you and goodbye to him over the last weeks.”

New laws to protect consumers from cyber criminals come into force in the UK

From today, regulations enforcing consumer protections against hacking and cyber-attacks will take effect, mandating that internet-connected smart devices meet minimum-security standards by law.

• consumers will benefit from banning of easily guessable default passwords, marking a significant leap in protecting individuals, society and the economy from cyber criminals 

Consumer protections against hacking and cyber-attacks will come into force today, as all internet connected smart devices will be required by law to meet minimum-security standards. 

Manufacturers will be legally required to protect consumers from hackers and cyber criminals from accessing devices with internet or network connectivity - from smartphones to games consoles and connected fridges - as the UK becomes the first country in the world to introduce these laws.  

Under the new regime, manufacturers will be banned from having weak, easily guessable default passwords like ‘admin’ or ‘12345’ and if there is a common password the user will be promoted to change it on start-up. This will help prevent threats like the damaging Mirai attack in 2016 which saw 300,000 smart products compromised due to weak security features and used to attack major internet platforms and services, leaving much of the US East Coast without internet. Since then, similar attacks have occurred on UK banks including Lloyds and RBS leading to disruption to customers. 

The move marks a significant step towards boosting the UK’s resilience towards cyber-crime, as recent figures show 99% of UK adults own at least one smart device and UK households own an average of nine connected devices. The new regime will also help give customers confidence in buying and using products, which will in turn help grow businesses and the economy.  

An investigation conducted by Which? showed that a home filled with smart devices could be exposed to more than 12,000 hacking attacks from across the world in a single week, with a total of 2,684 attempts to guess weak default passwords on just five devices.   

 Minister for Cyber, Viscount Camrose said:   

As every-day life becomes increasingly dependent on connected devices, the threats generated by the internet multiply and become even greater.  From today, consumers will have greater peace of mind that their smart devices are protected from cyber criminals, as we introduce world first laws that will make sure their personal privacy, data and finances are safe.    We are committed to making the UK the safest place in the world to be online and these new regulations mark a significant leap towards a more secure digital world. 

Data and Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, said: 

Today marks a new era where consumers can have greater confidence that their smart devices, such as phones and broadband routers, are shielded from cyber threats, and the integrity of personal privacy, data and finances better protected. Our pledge to establish the UK as the global standard for online safety takes a big step forward with these regulations, moving us closer to our goal of a digitally secure future.

OPSS Chief Executive, Graham Russell said:    

The use and ownership of consumer products that can connect to the internet or a network is growing rapidly. UK consumers should be able to trust that these products are designed and built with security in mind, protecting them from the increasing cyber threats to connectable devices.     As the UK’s product regulator, OPSS will be ensuring consumers can have that confidence by working with the industry to encourage innovation and compliance with these new laws.

NCSC Deputy Director for Economy and Society, Sarah Lyons said: 

Smart devices have become an important part of our daily lives, improving our connectivity at home and at work; however, we know this dependency also presents an opportunity for cyber criminals.   Businesses have a major role to play in protecting the public by ensuring the smart products they manufacture, import or distribute provide ongoing protection against cyber-attacks and this landmark Act will help consumers to make informed decisions about the security of products they buy.  I encourage all businesses and consumers to read the NCSC ’s point of sale leaflet , which explains how the new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure ( PSTI ) regulation affects them and how smart devices can be used securely. 

With 57% of households owning a smart TV, 53% owning a voice assistant and 49% owning a smart watch or fitness wristband, this new regime reinforces the government’s commitments to addressing these threats to society and the economy head on.  

The laws are coming into force as part of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure ( PSTI ) regime, which has been designed to improve the UK’s resilience from cyber-attacks and ensure malign interference does not impact the wider UK and global economy.    

The new measures will also introduce a series of improved security protections to tackle the threat of cyber-crime:  

• Common or easily guessable passwords like ‘admin’ or ‘12345’ will be banned to prevent vulnerabilities and hacking  
• Manufacturers will have to publish contact details so bugs and issues can be reported and dealt with  
• Manufacturers and retailers will have to be open with consumers on the minimum time they can expect to receive important security updates  

Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said: 

Which? has been instrumental in pushing for these new laws which will give consumers using smart products vital protections against cyber criminals looking to launch hacking attacks and steal their personal information.  The OPSS must provide industry with clear guidance and be prepared to take strong enforcement action against manufacturers if they flout the law, but we also expect smart device brands to do right by their customers from day one and ensure shoppers can easily find information on how long their devices will be supported and make informed purchases.

David Rogers, CEO of Copper Horse, said:   

We started this work many years ago so that people would not have to understand lots about the security of connected product in order to be secure. Getting rid of things like default passwords that are set to ‘admin’ or ‘12345’ are fundamental basics.    Manufacturers should not be providing anyone with products like webcams that are so weak and insecure that they are trivial to hack into and takeover. This stops now and people can have greater confidence that the internet connected products that they buy have better security measures built-in to protect them.

The UK government has collaborated with industry leaders to introduce this raft of transformative protections, which also include manufacturers having to publish information on how to report security issues to increase the speed at which they can address these problems. In addition, consumers and cyber security experts can play an active role in protecting themselves and society from cyber criminals by reporting any products which don’t comply to the Office for Product Safety and Standards ( OPSS ).   

The government is beginning the legislative process for certain automotive vehicles to be exempt from the product security regulatory regime, as they will be covered by alternative legislation.   

This new regime intends to increase consumer confidence in the security of the products they buy and use, delivering on one of the government’s five priorities to grow the economy. The new laws are part of the government’s £2.6 billion National Cyber Strategy to protect and promote the UK online.

Media, journalism and creative industries personal statement example.

While writing an article for my blog on the life of the singer Jim Morrison, I stumbled upon a quote by him "Whoever controls the media, controls the mind," which made me realize the colossal power media holds-to influence the opinions and attitudes of people.

This thought precipitated a realization for me that the field of media resonates with my communication skills, ingenuity, and intellectualism. Media's power to influence not only the social and political spheres but also an individual's day to day life, including my own, is what motivates me to study this course.

The social aspect of media, in particular, compels me because of its potential to amplify marginalized voices. Coming from an Indian background, the issue of oppressive patriarchal dominance in my society piqued my interest and the platform of social media has helped me raise awareness about the same through online petitions and campaigns.

Managing a social media account to promote feminism among the youth has not only enabled me to connect, critique, and share perspectives but also significantly enhanced my skills to investigate and present allowing me to have hands-on experience in social media management and networking.

To expand my knowledge, I participated in the Fortis Peer Moderator Program on Media literacy and Gender Sensitivity, which enabled me to become a wiser consumer and producer of media. To further augment my knowledge of the foundation of media, I completed a Coursera course through the University of Amsterdam on Media Ethics and Governance.

This course provided me with the knowledge of perspectives on media ethics as well as the dominant theoretical approaches that enabled me to reflect on ethical dilemmas and develop a well-substantiated argumentation in a variety of media-related contexts.

The case studies in this course made me realize that various dimensions like culture, psychological behavior, and statistics are also an indispensable part of media. Finding this multifaced element of media intellectually fascinating, I enrolled in a summer training program on Creative and Cultural Events through which, in addition to learning how to practically organize cultural events, I also learned how the mass media influences modern culture and shapes societal behavior.

While these courses exposed me to the basis of media and creative industries, my schoolwork prepared me for the academic workload. Throughout school, I have been awarded the scholar badge for eight consecutive years and attained proficiency awards in English and Mathematics which have upskilled my resilience. My extracurriculars have also prepared me for a career in media.

Competing in several essay writing competitions has enhanced my ability to write in a clear, concise, and professional manner which further enabled me to get an opportunity to co-author a published book - Crescent. I have also regularly written and edited articles for my school magazine. These projects allowed me to expand my writing, text editing, and compiling skills.

Having won an award at the UtopiaMUN and various debate competitions, I am equipped with confident public speaking skills. These competitions required me to have an intricate knowledge of current affairs which I've received by listening to Peter Kafka's Recode Media podcast weekly.

In addition to writing and public speaking, I also have a keen interest in community service. Being a zone leader at the Sankalp NGO and having successfully raised money through a social crowdfunding program for providing mid-day meals to underprivileged children, I realized the correlation media platforms have with the service dimension.

My other hobbies include reading suspense novels, writing poetry, and journaling regularly. Through my training and coursework, I have developed the necessary skills required for a successful career in media, and this bedrock along with my enthusiasm for the subject will facilitate me to productively learn this course at university.

Gov. Kim Reynolds released the following statement in response to the Biden Administration releasing revised Title IX rules: 

“By attempting to redefine sex to include gender identity and sexual orientation in Title IX, President Biden is marginalizing girls and women. There are undeniable and important biological differences between males and females. It's a fact that cannot be denied, no matter how inconvenient it is for the president during an election year. While he caves to the radical left, I will continue to protect the rights of women of all ages. We already have laws on the books to do that. I’ve asked the Attorney General’s office to litigate this outrageous rule that attempts to use federal funds to force our communities to ignore parental rights, due process, free speech, and protected intimate spaces.”
