Metro FM media personalities, Sabelo “DJ Sabby” Mtshali and long-term girlfriend and news anchor Lindi Serame, tied the knot after getting engaged last year.

After a decade long relationship, the newlyweds are officially off the market and unified their families in a traditional ceremony called umembeso .

According to Sunday World Sabelo and Lindi kept the news of their engagement a secret because they wanted to enjoy their moment as an engaged couple. The couple also shared that they were looking at having two weddings, a traditional one, and a white wedding.

The couple has a five-year-old son, Orifha Nkosi Mtshali.

Taking to their individual Instagram accounts, the couple shared a series of photos sharing their union with their social media followers.

Dressed in their traditional attire, IsiZulu and Tshivenda erspectively, the Metro FM socialites gave a glimpse of their umembeso ceremony.

Umembeso is a Zulu tradition which involves the giving of gifts to a bride’s family. These gifts traditionally include blankets, pinafores, head scarves, and clothes.

“A week ago we celebrated and completed cultural rituals in an intimate ceremony at Makhulu’s home. It was beautiful to see the differences in culture and how our families came together,” Lindi, now DJ Sabby’s wife, wrote.

Lindi cited that her family got to experience the exchanging of gifts as they usually don’t do so in what they call “ mamalo ” in her native language.

“My family, who don’t exchange gifts during what we call ‘ mamalo’ nga Tshivenda, got to experience ‘umembeso’ ,” she added.

Congratulatory messages

The comment section was flooded with congratulatory messages and well-wishes to the newlyweds, many of them from industry friends.

“Congratulations to Lindi and you brother. Perfect full circle. God bless your union,” Tumelo Ruele said.

“Congratulations beautiful, to you and @dj_sabby many blessings,” wrote colleague Khutso Theledi .

DJ Sabby and Lindi to say ‘I do’

METRO FM presenters DJ Sabby and Lindi Serame are engaged!

They announced the news on social media on Monday, 8 November.

Sabby (31) and Lindi (30), who’ve been together for nine years, said they’ve been engaged for a month. Sabby, whose real name is Sabelo Mtshali, said he paid lobola for Lindi the week before the official announcement. “I’ve always known she was the woman I would marry and be with forever. But there were certain things I would have to do for myself before I could make a commitment of this magnitude. I wanted to work on myself and achieve some things before entering the world of marriage,” he said.

Speaking about the proposal, the Metro FM Top 40 Chart presenter said: “Because of the pandemic, the idea I had couldn’t happen so I decided to bring the dream to our backyard. Her friends were part of the plan and helped with keeping her busy,” he said.

“She went out with friends and decor people came to do everything. We got a photographer and videographer to capture everything. Lindi’s simple but she loves glam and fine things. She came home to that. Putting it together wasn’t easy. It took five months to plan.”

He said they kept their engagement a secret for a month because they wanted to enjoy it together. Lindi said: “I was overwhelmed. I definitely wasn’t expecting it when it happened, so it was a lot. The planning that went into it was amazing.”

The newsreader said they were planning their two weddings. “We’re looking at doing the traditional wedding first and then the white wedding. We are looking at what we want and our families want because we’re from two different cultures,” she said.

Ms. See was born in Paris but grew up in Los Angeles. She lived with her mother but spent a lot of time with her father’s family in Chinatown. Her first book, On Gold Mountain: The One Hundred Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family (1995), was a national bestseller and a New York Times Notable Book. The book traces the journey of Lisa’s great-grandfather, Fong See, who overcame obstacles at every step to become the 100-year-old godfather of Los Angeles’s Chinatown and the patriarch of a sprawling family.

While collecting the details for On Gold Mountain , she developed the idea for her first novel, Flower Net (1997), which was a national bestseller, a New York Times Notable Book, and on the Los Angeles Times Best Books List for 1997. Flower Net was also nominated for an Edgar award for best first novel. This was followed by two more mystery-thrillers, The Interior (2000) and Dragon Bones (2003), which once again featured the characters of Liu Hulan and David Stark. This series inspired critics to compare Ms. See to Upton Sinclair, Dashiell Hammett, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Ms. See has led an active and varied career.  She was the Publishers Weekly West Coast Correspondent for thirteen years. As a freelance journalist, her articles have appeared in Vogue, Self, and More , as well as in numerous book reviews around the country.  She wrote the libretto for Los Angeles Opera based on On Gold Mountain , which premiered in June 2000 at the Japan American Theatre and was remounted in the Chinese Garden at the Huntington Library and Gardens in 2022. She also served as guest curator for an exhibit on the Chinese-American experience at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, which then traveled to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., in 2001. Ms. See then helped develop and curate the Family Discovery Gallery at the Autry Museum, an interactive space for children and their families that focused on Lisa’s bi-racial, bi-cultural family as seen through the eyes of her father as a seven-year-old boy living in 1930s Los Angeles. She has designed a walking tour of Los Angeles Chinatown and wrote the companion guidebook for Angels Walk L.A. to celebrate the opening of the MTA’s Chinatown metro station. She also curated the inaugural exhibition—a retrospective of artist Tyrus Wong—for the grand opening of the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles.

Ms. See was honored as National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women in 2001, was the recipient of the Chinese American Museum’s History Makers Award in 2003, and received the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California in 2017. She sits on the boards of Los Angeles Opera, The Music Center, the 1871 Chinese Massacre Foundation, and the Trusteeship—an organization comprised of preeminent women of achievement and influence in diverse fields.

Peggy Onkutlwile Serame is the Minister of Finance for the Republic of Botswana, a position she has held since 16th April 2021. Prior to this, she served as the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry from November 2019 to April 2021. Ms. Serame was Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary to the President from September to November 2019. Prior to her appointment as Minister, she was Permanent Secretary in the then Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry from January 2015 to November 2019.

Ms. Serame is an Economist with a Master’s Degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Statistics. She has served in various positions in the Public Service, including Director for Macroeconomic Policy (Ministry of Finance and Economic Development) and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Economic Diversification Drive (Ministry of Trade and Industry). From 4th January to 7th July 2007, she was placed at the World Bank in Washington DC on Special Assignment under the Voice Secondment Program.

Ms. Serame has also represented the Botswana Government as Director on a number of Boards, including the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS), Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC), Botswana Development Corporation (BDC), and Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA).

Her continued goal is to make significant contributions to the development and transformation of Botswana’s economy, ultimately changing the lives of Botswanans for the better. Ms. Serame also contributes to her society through humanitarian work with a focus on youth, young women, and the girl child.

Lisa Seagram born Ruth Browser, was an American actress. She appeared on such TV shows as Batman, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched and Burke’s Law in the 1960s.
