I once took a business coaching course and part of the required reading was was a little book – actually more like a pamphlet called It Works by RHJ – the Famous Little Red Book That Makes Your Dreams Come True.

open book with coffee cup

As I was organizing my home office yesterday, I came across this little gem, which I had forgotten all about.

You can find It Works by RHJ here on Amazon if you want to take a look.

What Is It Works About?

From the title you may have figured out that the book It Works is about manifesting your desires .

If you enjoyed the books:

  • The Secret by Rhonda Byrne ,
  • Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks (you can read my Ask and It Is Given Review here ) or
  • A Happy Pocket Full of Money (read my review here )

then It Works will be right up your alley.

What is Special About the It Works Book?

The It Works Book was written in 1926 by an author that goes by RHJ.

Weighing in at about 10 pages – depending on the version that you read – it is really lightweight and to the point.

It starts by defining the “secret” to obtaining what you want.

The next section outlines the 3 steps that you need to take to manifest the things you want.

And the last section is a little warning to be careful on what you ask.

That’s it.

It’s a 5 minute read that is clear and actionable.

Does It Work? (See What I Did There?)

Well, I did mention to you that I had forgotten all about this book – so clearly, I haven’t been doing these steps day after day.

However, the information in this pamphlet is the short version of what I read in the other books about manifesting that I mentioned above.

The author talks about:

  • the power you have within you,
  • the power of focus, and
  • the power of gratitude.

Ever since I have started reading books about manifesting what you desire, my way of thinking and perspective has evolved.

I have to say that I have been happier with life in general and been much more flexible when dealing with potential obstacles.

It does seem that when you expect good things, good things tend to happen – even though they might not be the things that you initially set out to receive.

If that makes sense.

Maybe it’s the ability to see a silver lining where you may not have seen it before, call it appreciation for all the things and all the people, or bigger thinking – call it what you want.

But I can say that the It Works Book was definitely worth more than the 5 minutes it took me to read it.

And it fascinates me that this book was written almost 100 years ago.

You might think that “The Secret” is more of a modern concept. But clearly it is not.

I was interested in trying the…gummies

I was interested in trying the products. I signed up but in less than 24 hours decided to hold off pending more research. I tried to sign in to my account but the link does not work. The website does not work. Fortunately my payment method allowed me to immediately cancel autopay, but this may be an expensive lesson for what appears to be a scam website.

If I could give customer service…

If I could give customer service representatives -10 I would. My distributor is great but customer service keeps cancelling my account for NO REASON. This is the second time in less than 2 months. The first time was because I was waiting for my bank card the second time my order was suppose to be processed on March 2nd they cancelled my account 3 days after I made a one time purchase & one day before my auto shipment for absolutely no reason. Figure it out!!

Finally, after months of phone calls with it works. I finally got a hold of their claims/recovery department, and got my problem resolved. They are reimbursing me for the extra charges that they made on my credit card. I am very grateful for that. But in the future, I will never do business with them again.

Hello Linda, We are happy to hear you got this matter resolved. And we wish you well! Sincerely, IT WORKS!

Do not fall for this

Do not fall for this! This whole company is a joke! After speaking with a rep that works for them I agreed to a 1 TIME PAYMENT for a month supply. I had in text messages with the rep that I did not want to subscribe to anything and I would contact her if I wanted to go farther with the weight loss subscription. The following month they took over a hundred dollars from my account WITHOUT my consent! When I contacted the company and put a ticket in with them to cancel the order within 6 hours of them taking money from my bank account. Mind you this was on a Sunday morning. I heard nothing and then Monday morning I called them to request that it be canceled as I did not sign up for this and they proceeded to tell me that they could not cancel my order because there warehouse works offline and have no phone and they had no way to cancel it! (Sorry but this is a lie, with today’s technology come on now)I then reached out to the rep that I had ordered from the first time and what I thought was the only time and she was very nice at first was going to go above and beyond to help me get that order canceled and my money back that they had no right taking! She even offered to buy the product off me once it was delivered to me. I have reached out to her numerous times and now no reply! But the company says if I return it unopened they will give me a refund that would take up to 30 days. lol really? So they want me to pay to ship it back? Um NO, because then I’m out the money to ship it back! This is a scam and a real joke! I really kick myself in the butt for not reading the reviews about this company! DO NOT FALL FOR THIS! I AM TRYING TO SAVE YOU FROM HELL!

Horrible company ! Scammers !!

I would give zero Stars if I could! Do not and I repeat do not order from this company! I paid over $200 , I got gummies that are completely rancid they are disgusting they have gone bad even my son was spitting them out. All their products smell horrible like pine or gone bad and leave your hair feeling heavy and do not do what they promise to do. I spent over $200 for products that I'll never use and gummies that have gone bad I requested a refund right away I explained that the gummies are literally Rancid as they have been probably sitting in shelves for months and months however they will not refund me they say they do not have a money back guarantee and they basically do not care that I am not happy with the productsand got bad gummies. Do not order from this company, absolutely horrible products and horrible customer service and satisfaction. Now I am stuck with products I will never use and gummies I threw in the garbage. Horrible Experience.

I love the itworks products they have…

I love the itworks products they have helped me to lose over 80 pounds so far. I used the gummies, TFX, keto coffee. It take drinking a lot of water to stay full, but I love these products. Not only me though one of itworks newer products Aloe has helped my elderly father with repairing his kidney function. Before he started taking the aloe my father was looking at having to go on dialysis his kidney function was only 10 percent, after only 2 months of using the aloe, my fathers kidney function improved to more than 30 percent. Now I am not saying this aloe saved his life, but I am saying that this aloe is helping flush the dangerous toxins that built up in his kidney. Thank you itworks

Do not, I repeat, no not sign up for auto ship. I thought I had canceled mine after the mandatory 90 day commitment only to find out that the lady only put in a pause on the shipment. I got charged for 2 shipments that went to an old address and are now lost. They would not refund my money or recognize their mistake. They stole over 200 bucks from me and I have absolutely nothing to show for it. Please don’t even risk it, I didn’t even lose any weight on the stuff I did willingly purchase.

I totally don’t understand these Negative reviews I been taking these products for over a year and a half now and I have lost weight have energy. I really like the products. I have never had a problem with customer service or shipping. Only once I received a extra item that I didn’t order on my order it was just items were mixed up,I wasn’t charged for the wrong item it was just put in my order instead of my product, customer service got right on it sent out my correct item and I offered to send back the item that was wrong they said No worries you keep it and try it out. I was so amazed how Great customer service was and excited to try the new product😊 The Products are expensive even if your on the perks plan so I wish they had some better sales like on Holidays like a Long time ago in the past. And I just went to order the lash serum and I think they discontinued it,I’m bummed I really liked it and it lasted a long time.😔 Other than that I think this Company is Great!❤️

Horrible company

Horrible company! I thought that they were a Christian company. They are so deceptive with the host a post and they don’t let customers return anything unopened even if it didn’t work for them. There is a complete lack of integrity with this company. If they really stood behind their products, they would let somebody return something if it didn’t work for them. All the money is paid in bonuses, and there’s no discount for distributors they feed off of their distributors for purchasing their expensive products.

The worst customer service I've ever…

The worst customer service I've ever received. I only agreed to try a sample. I was then billed $52.00. When I tried to cancel this subscription, the rep wanted all of my banking information as well as PayPal, venmo, and cash app. Definitely a scam company. Then Ramon or Jeremy or whoever else I talked with got mad and hung up on me twice. Their number is 1-615-280-0096. A total scam.

It's a persons mindset

The product works based on your individual discipline I started with the coffee (which I did for nearly 6 months an only stopped because I was drinking To much of it) went to the Fat Burners which I personally like a lot(tried the gummies but wasn't feeling them so I stopped after a month) and my home girl also likes alot. I am giving the Thermo pills a try now along with the Fat Burners for my home girl. It works WILL work but it's all in your mindset, never depends solely on the product that is where you will fail. Alot of the weight loss, dexto or whatever a person is shooting for all starts with DISCIPLINE OF MIND and maintain it. And I've never had a issue in stopping because jus before C19 swept the world I stopped completely for a year no muss or fuss.

I previously made a review and I'm back…

I previously made a review and I'm back with an update. After speaking to customer service for days, I was connected to a woman, Beth McDonald, a senior representative. Beth has been nothing but kind, apologetic, has gone above and beyond to get this straightened out and a pleasure to work with. What I have learned? While I still don't care for the distributor I ordered from, the people answering complaints are not responsible for the company policies, they are simply doing their job and I have learned to stay kind to those people. It Works, while I will never purchase again, you have a phenomenal worker in , Beth. She deserves recognition. God bless

Hello Joanna, Thank you so much for revising your review. We really appreciate your kind comments about our senior representative. We will be sure to let them know. Also, we are happy to hear this matter has been resolved. Sincerely, It Works!

Loving the products I've tried so far

Loving the products I've tried so far. I have lost weight but better still, in just 3 weeks I have dropped a dress size and have far more energy 🙂 I've been using the ThermoFight and Keto coffee. The coffee as a meal replacement is a game changer. It is so handy! Just got the perform bars and love those too. I don't understand alot of the reviews as I had no problem adjusting my subscription order 🙂

Best Regards, It Works!

I dont get the negative reviews

I dont get the negative reviews. While I have only tried the skinny brew, super green and energy products, I am obsessed. I used to take adderall and have been trying to cut back for mental health reasons but find the energy to be a good supplement.

Good company.

I have been using these product for a while now, and I do see a big difference. You need to give time, this is not a miracle product. Only concern, a bit expensive, comparing to other product, doing same thing ie: energy pwder, but taste is good...

Date of experience : March 15, 2023

Hello Sylvie, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and results with our products. Everyone is different and results will vary. As a reminder, our website athttps://www.itworksca.com/ lists all the Product Info Sheets which contain all the ingredients, dosage, usage and FAQ’s. Have a great day! Sincerely, It Works!

Really Impressed!

Firstly, I cannot understand the negative reviews on here, you benefit from a 25% discount when you take out a subscription. This is totally flexible, you can pause it, cancel it or change it. When I ordered I created a password for my account so I can go into it and amend it at anytime. If you want to order once you can! It is easy to arrange and extremely flexible. I am happy to order products each month as I am really seeing the benefits - I order super greens and super reds to get the nutrition and overall health benefits. My whole family drink these everyday! Digestion is better, my cravings are less, I sleep better and have loads more energy. I know they will be working to improve our overall health from the inside out and these benefits cannot always be measured. Our health is our wealth. Thank you to IT Works and my distributor for introducing these amazing products, they really have had such a positive impact.

Hello Val, You're absolutely right! There are many perks for our subscription and pricing is one of them! Thank you for sharing and caring! And yes, everyone is different and results will vary. Keep trying our amazing products. Sincerely, It Works!

How the World Really Works review: The tech that underpins society

From how food is grown to how we generate power, Vaclav Smil's new book outlines the basic technologies that keep society going and commands us to know them better

By Simon Ings

Whether we like it or not, the industrialised world in still heavily dependent on fossil fuels

DEEPOL by plainpicture/Monty Rakusen

How the World Really Works: A scientist’s guide to our past, present and future

Vaclav Smil

IN SUCH a complex world, no one can be expected to understand everything. But for energy expert Vaclav Smil, there are limits. In his view, it is inexcusable that most of us don’t know the first thing about the basic workings of modern life and the technologies that keep us all alive. It’s not all rocket science, he says. “Appreciating how wheat is grown or steel is made… are not the same as asking… somebody to comprehend femtochemistry .”

Smil deplores the way that Western culture disproportionately rewards work that is removed from the material realities of life on Earth. Most of all, he is concerned that the general public is abandoning its grip on reality. How the World Really Works is Smil’s attempt to redress the balance, showing the fundamentals of how food is grown, how the built environment is made and maintained, and how all of this is powered.

Smil believes it is worth understanding what might seem like outdated technologies given that the building blocks of our lives won’t change significantly over the next 20 to 30 years. Most of our electricity is still generated by steam turbines, invented by Charles Parsons in 1884, or by gas turbines, first commercially deployed in the late 1930s, he writes. And many of the trappings of the industrial world still hinge on the production of ammonia , steel , concrete and plastics, all of which currently require fossil fuels for their production. Even the newest technologies – AI , electric cars , 5G and space tourism – get most of their energy from fossil fuel-based turbines , says Smil.

Alternative methods are on their way , of course, but they will take decades to fully establish. Coal displaced wood relatively easily in the early 20th century, but it will probably take longer to bring in renewables because global energy demand is now an order of magnitude higher .

Given the irrefutable evidence of climate change , does this mean that Western civilisation, so hopelessly dependent on fossil fuels, is doomed?

Perhaps, but Smil would prefer that we concentrate on practical solutions, rather than wasting our energies on complex socio-economic forecasts. In his view, such forecasts will get less accurate over time because “more complex models combining the interactions of economic, social, technical, and environmental factors require more assumptions and open the way for greater errors”.

How the World Really Works neither laments the possibly imminent end of the world, nor bloviates about the potentially transformative powers of the AI Singularity . Indeed, it gives no quarter to such dramatic thinking, be it apocalyptic or techno-utopian.

Instead, in an era where specialisation is seen as the pinnacle of knowledge, Smil is an unapologetic generalist. “Drilling the deepest possible hole and being an unsurpassed master of a tiny sliver of the sky visible from its bottom has never appealed to me,” he writes. “I have always preferred to scan as far and as wide as my limited capabilities have allowed me to do.”

He chooses to explain the workings of the world as it is today, from energy to food, materials, the biosphere, globalisation and the perception of risk . He covers sizeable ground that other commentators ignore. It is a grumpy, pugnacious account that, I would argue, is intellectually indispensable in the run up to this year’s COP27 climate conference in Egypt. In short, How the World Really Works fully delivers on the promise of its title. It is hard to formulate any higher praise.

It Works! The Famous Little Red Book to Make Dreams Come True By R.H. Jarrett

“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” Albert Einstein

His title profoundly states it all. This book is a step-by-step simple guide for getting the things you most desire by thinking beyond the now and focusing more on creating a better you.

Surprisingly, anyone can easily apply R. H. Jarrett’s principles because the book is anything but, difficult, confusing or complicated. Jarrett’s book is  life-changing in a subtle manner. Small, subtle changes that transform your life…and that’s what I am all about. Because it’s often these subtle efforts of change in our daily routine that bring big results we so crave….and this is what brings purpose and belonging into our life.

It Works! The Famous Little Red Book to Makes Dreams Come True, was written by the mysterious R. H. Jarrett (Roy Herbert) whom very little is known about other than he was a kind and generous Chicago sales executive whom devoted many years of his life studying metaphysical success methods.

First published in 1926, The Little Famous Red Book was merely a simple pamphlet…. only with presisely detailed instructions on how to set and achieve goals. His book has since undergone numerous printings and has sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide.

The most appealing, stand-out quality about Jarrett’s book is  the no-nonsense, bulls-eye easy to read book about how to get what you most desire. It also holds some surprisingly simple, yet un-seen and un-known truths about the daily workings of our life. Truths so simple that we often overlook, dismiss and replace with more unnecessary and complicated things…. yet, we still unconsciously do it at times.

Unlike other self-help guru books that are stuffed with unnecessary fluff, Jarrett deliberately wrote his book in a succinctly manner for people to gain a deep understanding of his simple how-to universal formula without spending much time reading it.

Ironically, it’s often the smallest steps we take in any endeavor that add up over time and reap the most profounding results. Here is an abbreviated summery of his principles taken from his Famous Little Red Book.

Write down precisely what you want with clarity…. or find out what you truly want

Writing all the minute details of your goals will define the underlying “what” and “why”. Because having purpose and goals feeds the soul and harnesses your thoughts, energy, and actions into succeeding in something very specific.

It’s pointless wasting precious time and effort trying to write down what you think you might want without really knowing exactely what you want. Therefore, take time to search, explore, uncover and find what it is your heart desires. Merely wishing or just wanting something will not form a true connection with your inner persistance, determination, and grit to achieve the things you want.

Write it down in order

Write the things you most desire in order. How do you know what things you desire most? For some it may take extra time, but for most, it’s is easier than we think. Ask these questions to discover what that something is that can make your heart race:

  • Others look up to be because I am good at….
  • People have always complemented me on my….
  • When doing this activity or project, you easily lose track of time…
  • What is it that others ask you for advice or help on?
  • What would you spend your time doing if money was not an issue?
  • What is it that you couldn’t imagine never doing again?
  • Which topic or subject could you easily read 500 books on?
  • What makes your heart race and feel excited?
  • What would you continue to do even if you knew you would fail at it, but do it anyway?

Surprisingly, the process of writing down and being specific in our goals will reveal much about our mindset , the true depth of our inner strength and what we believe we are capable of.

So, write it down. Write it all down. And write it with every detail. Because unwritten goals with no written plans are just afterthoughts of pretty wishes.

Read and reflect on your goals three times a day

Reading and reflecting on your written goals three times a day places it in the forefront of your mind. By consistently focusing on your goals you will go all in.

Although there is no magic pill, spell or potion to get want you want, daily reflections of your goals will easily place you in a position where you are likely to take action and less likely to get derailed.

Don’t share your dreams, goals,  wishes, or desires

This is the rule most break. It’s not necessary to share your personal and private goals with others, especially to the naysayers (yes, you know who they are). This is to prevent negative or toxic people from derailing, doubting, or discouraging you.

Your goals are yours only. It’s all yours and belongs only to you and for you. It’s not your friends wishes, your children’s wants, nor your significant other’s desires. With that said, only surround yourself with positive people who sincerely support you and have your best interest.

It only works if you work

Give utmost attention and focus to the things you want. If you do exactly what this book says, you will get results. However, it will take focused work, commitment, discipline, and grit.

Start small by choosing three things to focus on because it will be overwhelming to focus on more than three things each day. Make this reflection a daily affirmation that becomes a habit.

Be earnest in all desires

Being earnest is having a clear purpose combined with a sincere eagerness to pursuing your purpose.

At first, you may notice sporadic glimmers of progress from your efforts and while it may not seem like big leaps, these habitually practiced everyday small steps will bring you to your destination.

  • Write down your goals (start small, prioritize and choose the top 3)
  • Read your goals 3 times a day (do this every day)
  • Do not share your personal goals (just go after it)
  • Be earnest with your goals and have good intentions
  • Have and show gratitude everyday (gratitude for the opportunity to even pursue your goals)

In life, most of us deny ourselves of our potential, capabilities, strengths, and ultimately the better version of ourselves. R. H. Jarrett is telling us to just do it. And if you are wondering if it is worth it……it absolutely is. It’s something of a piercing reverberation.

The Culture Warriors Are Coming for You Smart People

In Lionel Shriver’s new novel, judging intelligence and competence is a form of bigotry.

MANIA , by Lionel Shriver

As a novelist, Lionel Shriver has made her strongest impressions selecting some hot issue of the day — school shootings, the American health care system, the ballooning of the U.S. national debt — and working it into a well-paced drama about its effects on one family. When this formula works, as it did best with “We Need to Talk About Kevin” (2003), the result can be riveting and also very popular. The intimacy of domestic politics moderates Shriver’s polemical side, which, when given free rein — as during an infamous 2016 speech she gave on cultural appropriation while wearing a sombrero — usually turns out to be smug, crude and obtuse.

In Shriver’s tiresome new novel, “Mania ,” the balance is off. “Mania” is the story of Pearson Converse, an untenured academic who lives with her tree-surgeon partner and three children in a Pennsylvania college town. Most of the novel takes place during an alternate version of the 2010s, when a social-justice fad has been ignited by a best-selling book titled “The Calumny of I.Q.: Why Discrimination Against ‘Dumb People’ Is the Last Great Civil Rights Fight.”

Pearson’s son gets sent home from school for using “the D-word,” now considered a slur. Lawn signs appear in the neighborhood announcing “We support cognitive neutrality.” Student “predators” haunt the literature course Pearson teaches at the local liberal arts college, hungrily searching for any slip-up suggesting that she thinks some people are smarter than others, so they can report her to the administration and get her sacked. Worst of all, Pearson’s best friend from girlhood, Emory Ruth, boosts her TV career by taping editorials endorsing the new ideology known as Mental Parity.

In real life, partisan rancor typically fuels culture-war initiatives like this; in Shriver’s imaginary America, it barely exists. The new ethos gets rapidly and improbably adopted by everybody in every walk of life, regardless of political affiliation. Mental Parity not only borrows from the left’s obsession with egalitarianism, safetyism and language hygiene but also draws on the right’s mistrust of expertise and credentialism; it could have bipartisan appeal if it weren’t so patently absurd.

Soon, Barack Obama is out of favor for being “outstandingly astute, eloquent and well informed,” and replaced by Joe Biden, who makes a point of installing a Treasury secretary who’s “not only an imbecile but an imbecile who was recognizably an imbecile — someone whose speech and affect were conspicuously vacuous.” Similar incompetents are ordered to take out Osama bin Laden, a failed mission that leaves him free to bomb the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum.

Pearson’s partner, Wade, is forced to hire an assistant who knows nothing about arboriculture and drops a branch on him. Because medical degrees are “now handed out as carelessly as shopping fliers,” a young surgeon botches the ankle surgery his injuries require. Then Wade nearly dies after untrained nurses administer the wrong medication and is saved only by a doctor in his 50s, a relic from the good old days who has the temerity to know what he’s doing.

It goes on and on. Cars blow up because they’re built by idiots. Shrewd consumers import their food from overseas to avoid poisoning from unsafe American goods. Any word or phrase ever used as a synonym for “intelligent” (“quick,” “deep”) or stupid (“meatball,” “simple,” “dense”) must be purged from daily usage even when denoting a different meaning. If you want to order a wooden board at a hardware store, you have to ask for one that’s “two inches fat.” Mensa is “the kind of cerebral-supremacist organization” deemed “the greatest threat to American civic order” by no less than the F.B.I. Most fantastically, a child protective services investigator arrives at Pearson’s home because her youngest child reported her mother describing her as less intelligent than her siblings. “Use of language of such a derogatory character with minors,” this pious emissary states, “is classified as child abuse” and “potentially grounds for removing a child to foster care.”

As parody goes, this is ham-fisted stuff. Ironically, “Mania” lacks the discernment required to make it work. Satire demands precision, and Shriver applies an ax to a job calling for a scalpel. Although Shriver has made writing unlikable protagonists into a sort of cottage industry, Pearson is something more, a preeningly self-righteous didact swathed in false modesty about her own supposedly mediocre brain. Like many of Shriver’s narrators, Pearson often speaks or narrates with the sort of affected, antiquated vocabulary of a stock character from a 1930s movie, the portly gentleman in a white three-piece suit, up to no good and puffing on a cigar, played by Sidney Greenstreet. She has an odd, unexplained penchant for alliteration: “At the antediluvian argot, I nearly dropped my mask of stony stoicism.” She is not so much unlikable as simply insufferable.

Pearson’s past as an apostate of the Jehovah’s Witnesses makes her the sworn enemy of cant, and the only language she speaks is invective, so inevitably, she runs ruinously afoul of the new dispensation. Meanwhile, Emory’s star rises. She proves herself the ideal apparatchik on camera while privately snickering with Pearson and Wade over the silliness of Mental Parity, at least at first. The most — really the only — intriguing aspect of the novel is the relationship between these two friends and Pearson’s growing realization that Emory lacks a moral center. Emory herself remains a cipher. Is she a sociopath? Or just an opportunist? If only she were the unlikable narrator to tell this story. That would constitute a stretch for Shriver, imagining the interiority of a character who’s not basically an avatar of herself. That would be a truly daring choice, and dare I say it, a smart one.

Book review: Every mile through this wild landscape is filled with more than a walking adventure

“Arctic Traverse: A Thousand-mile Summer of Trekking the Brooks Range”

it works book review

By Michael Engelhard; Mountaineers Books, 2024; 304 pages; $21.95.

Michael Engelhard, a longtime outdoor instructor and wilderness guide as well as a cultural anthropologist and writer (including “Ice Bear” and “American Wild”), spent two months in the summer of 2012 solo-crossing Alaska’s Brooks Range. From the Canadian border he trekked over mountains and across tundra for 48 days and 600 miles. Near the headwaters of the Noatak River he switched to a rowing canoe for the last 400 miles to the coast.

Along the way Engelhard relied on six resupply caches and minimal technology — GPS and a satellite phone, neither of which worked perfectly. He traveled as lightly as he could, without even a camera. He avoided places where he might encounter other humans and stopped, briefly, in a single community, Anaktuvuk Pass, where he picked up a package from the post office and indulged in a pint of ice cream from the local store.

“Arctic Traverse,” written with a decade’s reflective retrospective, is not by any means a guidebook or a journal-like travelogue of day-to-day movements. It is, instead, an exceedingly well-crafted work that combines travel with natural history, anthropology and cultural concerns, literary references, philosophy, personal history, science, linguistics and humor. By intertwining details from the journey with his significant knowledge of the region from both guiding and anthropological work and with impressive observational skills, research and insight, Engelhard has fashioned a text that should appeal to multitudes of readers.

For starters, there’s enough drama for the most demanding of armchair adventurers. On the topo maps that doubled for journal pages, the author kept track of bears he saw and tried to avoid — often several in a day. For his very first day, he leads with his knowledge that his drop-off point along a creek was a very “bear-y” place and tells the story of a prior time, with clients, when they were charged by a mother bear and two cubs. Back in the present, “A total of seven bears, counting cubs, cross my path within the next four hours. Number five gallops up to me from the stream bottom, curious and confident, looking very excited. I unholster my spray can, the fastest gun in the North, before this sub-adult flees.”

Early chapters demonstrate the mix that Engelhard employs throughout. Chapter two, for example, includes more about bears, a narrative history of marking the border between Canada and the U.S., a brief biography of geologist Alfred Hulse Brooks (for whom the range is named), info about other surveys of the region, an account of customs agents preventing the passage of funeral-potlatch gifts between countries, beautifully rendered descriptions of the life around him, forays into thoughts about goal-oriented travel (Grand Canyon, Mount Everest), and reflection about his own expectations.

Typical of Engelhard’s keen observations and botanical knowledge is this passage layered within so much else: “I indulge in a summit nap among butterflies, cream-colored dryas, and Lapland rosebay, a fragrant, heathery bonsai-rhododendron with fuchsia blossoms and relatives in the Himalayas.”

Mosquitoes, ankle-twisting tussocks, alders, rain, cold, swift rivers, blisters, hunger, a painful foot, an aging body, getting lost — there were all those to contend with. In the two-page chapter (day 39) titled “Weakest Member of the Herd,” the author records zero miles covered and considers footgear, the amputated feet of Peter Freuchen, mobility in America, and a favorite song called “The Ramblin’ Rover.”

Sublime moments are also captured, including this one in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: “After I top out, the sun splits the sky’s scrim about glaciers that melt into the river. It spotlights two rams bedded down on an outcrop not far below as if pointing them out. ... Above the sheep but below me, a golden eagle gyres, wings locked... The configuration of sheep, bird, river, and mountains is perfect, a reward for three days of ankle busting. I’ve seen enough beauty for several lifetimes in one.” Later that day, migrating caribou surround his camp.

[ ‘Looking inside my brain’: 40 years of Ray Troll’s inspiration and imagination captured in new book ]

Engelhard is absolutely an advocate for wild places, generously quoting conservation forebears like Mardy and Olaus Murie, Robert Marshall, Aldo Leopold, Ellen Meloy, Barry Lopez and Edward Abbey, as well as Gwich’in and Inupiat elders and others he has known. He shows the magnificence of the country he traverses (which includes, besides the Arctic Refuge, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Noatak National Preserve) without too much editorializing, but in his final pages, a postscript from the present time, he lets loose about his need to speak up “when some idiocy threatens the Brooks Range.”

The author specifies damages to be incurred to rare and essential wildernesses from the Willow Project’s oil development and the Ambler Access Project, with its plans for a 211-mile road to massive mining operations. He also laments the carbon pollution that’s visibly warming the north, the accelerating extinction of species, and the role we all play in harming the Earth. He finds consolation in the fact that, in the long geological view, “our misdeeds and monuments shall become dust, or rather, a toxic stratum to be superceded.”

As bonuses to his spirited, wonder-inducing account, Engelhard includes both an extensive bibliography and a notes section that expands on his sources and will encourage readers to search out additional writers and historical reports.
