Room Preview allows you to learn more about the housing options available to you. Check out the online preview, available on the housing portal , beginning March 27th.

Phase 2: Room Selection is the process by which students are given the opportunity to select a room online from the available housing inventory. Selection times are determined randomly within priority groups. Students submitting names together (for room, suite or hall placement) will have individual priorities averaged to create one group priority.

The Phase 2 Room Selection will take place between April 15th and April 19, 2024.

Due to the high demand for NYU Housing,  not all students may be able to select a space during the Phase 2: Room Selection . The Office of Residential Life and Housing Services will administratively assign students who are unable to select their room over the summer. In this situation, students are still committed to the full terms of the housing license as outlined in the  key components of the process .

The Room Selection step can only be accessed through the housing application portal on your NYU Home account. Select the NYU Life tab and click on the "Student Housing Forms" card. Once in the portal, you may access the housing re-application by clicking on "Access Application" under Fall in New York City. Once in the application, you will be able to readily access Phase 2.

During Room Selection, room types will tell you the type of the room and whether the room is a studio or is in a suite. For example, a “double in unit” is a double room within a multi-room suite. The room card will display how many rooms are in a suite, along with the total number of residents in the suite (e.g. 2 room suite, 4 total residents). Efficiency and lower cost rooms will be designated in the room type as "efficient" or "lower cost" (e.g. lower cost triple in unit). Click “Room Details” on the room card to view bedroom details including if the room has a ventilation gap, number of closets, and other information.

Selection Time Notification

Room Selection times are determined by a randomized sorting within priority categories. Students who have registered in a group will have individual priorities averaged to create one group priority.

Students will be notified after 5pm on March 27, 2024 via their NYU Home account of the specific date and time that they will be able to access the Room Selection step, view the available inventory, and select a room. Students will be able to access the Room Selection step through the Housing Forms card at  NYU Home .

While students are not required to choose an assignment at their selection time, other students will continue to be rolled into the selection pool, making it likely that there will be fewer spaces as the process continues. The process will be open through 5:00pm EST on April 19, 2024, as space permits, for students to make a room selection for next year.

The selection times are randomly generated based on students’ individual priority or averaged group priority (if a student has registered with a group in Phase 1).

Students participating in Themed Engagement Communities will only be able to select within the program to which they were accepted. They will have the opportunity to select their spaces on April 8, 2024.

The general Room Selection process will begin on Monday, April 15, 2024.

Once selection times are determined, timetables will be provided to give students a better idea about where their selection time falls within the overall process.

As of Friday, April 19 at 10:00 AM EDT, Phase 2: Room Selection is Closed

As anticipated, we have now exhausted the spaces made available for Phase 2 Room Selection.

Students who were unable or chose not to select a space during Phase 2 - Room Selection will be administratively assigned over the summer. You are guaranteed an assignment in University housing even though you were unable or chose not to select a space.

You can submit your assignment preferences now by accessing your 2024-2025 Academic Year application in the Housing Portal. Please submit your preferences by May 15, 2024. Students who do not submit this form by May 15, 2024 will be assigned based on space availability anywhere in University-provided housing.

Selecting As An Individual

If you chose not to create a group during Phase 1, you will be able to go through Room Selection as an individual. When you access the Phase 2 step, you will be able to browse through the available inventory and select a room. Once your room has been confirmed, it cannot be changed. Be sure to make your selection carefully. Students can access the Phase 2: Room Selection step in the Academic Year 2024-2025 application via the Housing Forms card at  NYU Home .

Selecting As A Group

All individuals within a group can log in and select independently OR allow the Group Leader to select for them. Only the Group Leader can select for other group members. The Group Leader may only select spaces for group members within the same suite or floor.

As space becomes limited, groups may be forced to split apart. If possible, all group members are encouraged to be together to assist the Group Leader with selection decisions. It is critical that group members discuss options and alternatives. Once an assignment is confirmed, it cannot be changed.

If the Group Leader does not assign all members of the group, the unassigned members are responsible for individually assigning themselves anytime after their group selection time but prior to April 19, 2024. Students can access the Academic Year 2024-2025 application via the Housing Forms card at  NYU Home .

Consolidation Policy

In an effort to create more housing options for incoming and existing residents, ensure equity, and maximize use of available space, the University will actively seek to consolidate vacancies within the University Housing system. Students that are assigned to partially vacant rooms may be reassigned. This means that the hall, room, and/or roommates you select now may be changed if necessary for consolidation purposes. Consolidation may occur prior to check-in or during the academic year and students may be reassigned to other rooms, floors, or residence halls where necessary.

Post-Selection Room Change Process

Students who are dissatisfied with their room selection may submit a Room Change Request. Students must select a space in Phase 2 in order to be considered in the Room Change process. The online room change form will be available on April 15, 2024 through August 1, 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Once the first individual has selected into an apartment, that apartment will then only be visible to other students who share the same gender preference.  In other words, if the first person to select a space in a unit is female, that unit will not be visible to students who are male or who have opted into gender neutral housing.  If the first person to select a space within an apartment has applied as gender neutral, that unit will then only be visible to other students who have also opted into gender neutral housing, etc.

Students who successfully completed Phase 1, participating in general Room Selection, will have the ability to edit AND VERIFY room selection groups until March 25, 2024.

Yes. Even after you have confirmed your choice of space you will have the option to reject this selection and make a new selection. This can be done on the “Application & Payment Status” page of the Housing Application. Note that the spaces available to you after rejecting your room may be significantly different than those available when you made your initial selection.

Also note... rejecting your selection does NOT cancel your housing application or housing commitment.

If you have not yet selected a space, you may return to your housing application to change your gender preference. If you are part of a roommate group, and you opt to change your gender preference, you will be removed from the group since the group's gender preferences will no longer align.

If you are unable to select a room you will be administratively assigned by our office during Phase 3 over the summer. If you are part of a roommate group we will make every effort to place you with your requested roommates. We highly recommend that you submit an assignment preference form on your Housing Portal if there are specific buildings that you would prefer placement in. We cannot guarantee a specific assignment according to these preferences, but will certainly take them into consideration.

You are welcome to submit a Post Selection Room Change Request if you are not satisfied with your selection. These requests are not guaranteed and will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the summer as cancellations are processed.

No, you will not have the opportunity to select into any TECs if you were not admitted into one prior to Phase 2.

You are eligible to cancel your housing and can do so before or after participating in Room Selection. You will be assessed the published cancellation fee according to our  cancellation policy .

There is no way to see a live inventory of available rooms prior to your selection.

All of the relevant information about a particular room can be found in the room selection module when you click on any available space. This includes the room type, details about the kitchen, lighting, view, presence of a ventilation gap, and more about this room/suite. Information beyond what is available here, like exact room dimensions, is not available for any spaces.

Changes cannot be made to your room selection group after March 25, 2024. However, you will have the option to select a room independently during Room Selection if you do not want your group leader to select for you. Simply tell your group leader to not assign you because you wish to make your own selection.

No. Study away students are eligible to select into any space (in Manhattan or Brooklyn, regardless of which school you attend) available at their selection times and are not limited to Fall-only spaces.

No. If you select a space that is designated as "Spring Reassignment Required", it means that you will be reassigned to a new space for the spring term and will be required to move to that space at the end of the fall term.  You will remain financially committed to living on campus for the spring unless you graduate in December, study away for the spring, or are approved by your school for a leave of absence or withdrawal for the spring.

When you opt into gender neutral housing you confirm that you are comfortable with placement with any other student of legal sex male or female who has opted into gender neutral housing. If you are not comfortable with this, it is not recommended that you opt into gender neutral housing.

No.  You can only hold spaces in one building at a time, for up to ten minutes, while you consider your options.  If you switch to a different building to review new options, the rooms being held in the previous building will be open to others who are also participating in room selection.

Stuyvesant Town Doctoral Housing

Doctoral Student Housing (formerly MacCracken Housing Program) is only available to MacCracken doctoral students during their first year of study. It offers an opportunity for GSAS students to reside in shared apartments at a greatly subsidized rate while acclimating to New York City. We expect that by the end of their first year, students will be familiar enough with the city and the university to find housing more easily than they would have been able to otherwise.

Some important notes before you get started:

There are a limited number of available spaces, and they are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Apartments will be located in NYU Housing, but are not necessarily in the same building/complex.

  • NYU is committed to providing students with disabilities with accessible housing. Students requiring accessible housing must promptly register with and submit a request, with appropriate documentation, here .
  • For more information on how to request accessible housing, please visit the  Moses Center's website on housing .

Submission of the Doctoral Student Housing Interest Form is only the first step in the application process. You will receive an email from GSAS with full application materials and instructions within 10 business days of form submission. Students are encouraged to complete the full housing application as soon as possible.

The application process for GSAS Doctoral Student Housing, procedures, and deadlines are different from those required for other graduate housing options offered by NYU. If you are eligible (see below), then please follow the procedures and requirements that GSAS describes in these materials. Do not follow any applications provided by the NYU Residential Life & Housing Services.

Students arrested at Gould Plaza required to complete ‘dozens of writing assignments,’ faculty group says

%28Lianna+OGrady+for+WSN%29

NYU’s Office of Student Conduct is allegedly requiring that some students arrested at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment in Gould Plaza write “reflection papers” and complete “dozens of writing assignments,” a recent Faculty & Staff for Justice in Palestine press release stated. The release said that in emails sent last week, the university informed students they would receive a censure — or a “ formal reprimand for violation of university policy ” — on their transcripts if they did not submit the assignments by May 29.

One of the assignments instructed students to write a reflection paper describing the “incident” for which they were called in the OSC and assessing whether the decision they made aligned with their “personal values.” The paper “cannot serve to justify” the student’s actions, “evaluate the actions of others, or challenge a conduct regulation,” according to the assignment’s instructions. The other assignment is a 49-page “series of readings and reflective activities” that aims to help students “learn about and understand” their own values and how their actions “affected others and the community.”

“Either they really don’t understand that these students are living their values, or this was just intended to be humiliating and infantilizing,” Sara Pursley, a CAS professor and FSJP member, said in an interview with WSN. “It’s ironic to say the least that, in an essay on integrity, they tell students they can’t actually talk about what their real values were.”

In the May 13 press release, FSJP also criticized NYU’s use of Advocate — a higher education software created by the “behavioral intervention management” company Symplicity — which the group claims houses the OSC’s writing prompts. The group noted that Symplicity, which supplies student conduct programs to NYU and over 250 universities, pleaded guilty in federal court on criminal hacking charges in 2014.

In a written statement to WSN, university spokesperson John Beckman called FSJP’s press release “disappointingly misleading” and said that the only people “determining the sanctions that students may receive from conduct proceedings” are staff at the OSC.

“The implication that there’s something insidious going on or that NYU has ‘outsourced’ adjudication of the university’s student conduct procedures is deceptive propaganda,” Beckman wrote. “Symplicity has nothing —  repeat, nothing — to do with the specific sanctions NYU students may receive as a result of a conduct process.”

The FSJP press release comes after the university had allegedly dropped criminal charges brought against all protesters arrested at the pro-Palestinian encampment in Gould Plaza three weeks ago, including dozens of students and faculty . Since the encampment, on-campus groups, including FSJP and the NYU Palestine Solidarity Coalition have been demanding that NYU pardon students facing disciplinary action for their involvement in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, divest from companies with ties to Israel, shut down its study away site in Tel Aviv and remove police from campus.

NYU allegedly began disciplinary hearing for students who were involved with pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus last week, although NYU PSC did not say how many students received misconduct violations or what university policies they were accused of violating. More recently, nine students were suspended and two were given persona non grata status after a demonstration in Bobst Library on Friday, according to NYU PSC.

On Wednesday, March 30, undergraduates will receive an email from Residential & Dining Enterprises Student Housing Assignments inviting them to begin the process of selecting their housing for the 2022-2023 year. Here are a few other important dates and details you need to know.

  • All students, including those applying for pre-assignment, serving as residential student staff, or living in Greek houses, must file a housing application by the April 18 deadline.
  • Students who have special housing needs due to a disability or documented medical condition, as well as any members of their group, will not participate in the self-select process and will not be assigned gate times. Students with a medical need must file a Housing Accommodation Request Form with the Office of Accessible Education by April 11.

A new process

Students shared the importance of being able to easily assign with their friends and keep their groups together. The new process offers a streamlined and more transparent way of doing this.

This year, instead of listing residence choices on an application, students applying for undergraduate housing will fill out a much shorter application (March 30 – April 18) and then be assigned a gate time during which they will go into the housing system themselves and select their house and room all in one step (May 23-27).

This will allow students to make decisions in real time based on what is available at their selection time and will increase transparency in the assignment process. Detailed instructions and answers to many of your questions regarding House and Room Selection will be in emails you receive from R&DE Student Housing Assignments beginning this week. Be sure to read these emails carefully. On Wednesday, you can review instructions and other information about neighborhood housing on the R&DE website.

Why do we have neighborhoods?

The neighborhood system grew out of Stanford’s Long-Range Planning Process , in which faculty, students, staff and postdocs were invited to submit proposals “to advance frontiers, strengthen foundations, stimulate synergies, and anticipate change in one or more of the following key areas: Education, Research, Our Community and Beyond Our University.”

There were a number of proposals that suggested ways Stanford could do more to realize the full potential of the residential experience for our students. This need led Provost Persis Drell to commission the ResX Task Force. The Task Force submitted recommendations to the President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Persis Drell in December 2018 and they were shared with the campus community in spring 2019.

What were the key concerns the recommendations address?

The Task Force heard from many students that they wanted a housing selection process that makes it easier to keep friend groups together. Students shared how important the friendships were in their frosh year on campus and the neighborhoods allow students to build on that year.

In addition, students will be able to develop supportive relationships with the residence staff (Resident Fellows, Resident Director, Community Coordinators, Neighborhood Program Directors, Undergraduate Advising Directors, Student Housing Building Managers and Housing Service Center staff, Stanford Dining Managers and Nutritionists, custodians and food service workers), who will be with them during their years in the neighborhood.

Was there student input in developing the ResX Task Force Recommendations?

Yes. Over the course of six months, the task force met with more than 500 students, alumni, faculty, and staff and it received some 600 pieces of unique feedback through an online portal in addition to reviewing 493 long-range planning proposals. The group also visited peer campuses (Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Rice) and reviewed prior Stanford studies and presentations on the residences.

Why can’t the neighborhoods be contiguous? How will they work as neighborhoods?

One goal in creating the neighborhoods was to offer a similar quality and diversity of housing in every neighborhood, so each neighborhood includes a mix of housing options – all-frosh houses, upperclass houses (for sophomores, juniors, and seniors), a mix of independent living environments (Row houses, suites, and/ or apartments), and University Theme Houses, which can include academic and ethnic theme houses, co-operative houses, and Greek houses.

To accomplish this, each neighborhood also includes residences that are not immediately adjacent to the rest of their neighborhoods.

Stanford’s undergraduate neighborhoods are not only about physical proximity; as important, they are about being able to easily stay with the same group of friends and acquaintances throughout your time at Stanford. Some people have called this “community continuity.” While some parts of your neighborhood are next door, and a few might be a jaunt across campus, they’ll all be filled with students and staff that you know.

How will the neighborhoods build and support community and belonging?

Now that neighborhood councils have been formed, students can expect to see more community activity in spring. The neighborhood councils bring together a group of students with professional staff from Residential & Dining Enterprises, Residential Education, and Undergraduate Advising to promote community and belonging within the residential neighborhoods at Stanford.

Each neighborhood has emerged with its own unique identity that reflects the interests of the students and houses through programming and swag. Some exciting events planned for spring quarter include concerts, festivals, a drag show, an outdoor film series across neighborhoods, and much more!

Neighborhood dining is an essential part of supporting undergraduate communities. R&DE Stanford Dining’s neighborhood meal plans make it easier for students living on the Row, in Suites and Co-ops to engage with their neighbors. Dining also hosts a number of community cultural celebrations throughout the year.

Matriculation | Leaves and Withdrawals

The following applies to NYU GPH Graduate and GPH Doctoral Students.

If you are an undergraduate student taking GPH courses (i.e. combined major, 4+1, or minor) please refer to your home school’s policies.

NYU expects its students to  maintain continuous enrollment in an academic program with the exception of summer breaks.  Masters students  must complete their degree requirements within  6 years from the time of matriculation .  Doctoral students  must complete their degree requirements within   7 years from the time of matriculation .

It is sometimes necessary or desirable for a student to take a leave from enrollment for a period of time. A leave of absence maintains a student’s status toward the degree.

Students granted a break in their studies are still required to complete all degree requirements within the specified time of initial enrollment. A leave does not extend the specific time period for obtaining a degree.

  • Withdrawals
  • Maintenance of Matriculation
  • Important Information
  • FAQs About Leaves and Withdrawals

A Leave is an approved temporary break from University studies for one or more terms with the intent to return for a future term. A leave of absence must be requested prior to the semester in which the leave is taken but no later than the  Add/Drop deadline for that term. Students granted a leave of absence are still required to complete all degree requirements within the specified time of initial enrollment. A leave does not extend the specific time period for obtaining a degree.

There are 3 types of leaves:

  • Leave of Absence (LOA)
  • Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA)
  • Non-sanctioned Leave of Absence

Please Note | If you are an international student , in addition to following these steps, you  are required to contact NYU Office of Global Services to discuss your leave plans. A personal or medical leave of absence can impact your eligibility for F-1 or J-1 benefits such as CPT or OPT. Please refer to the International Students Taking a LOA/MLOA section below for more information.

The NYU Office of Student Success is here to help you make the most of your leave and ease your transition back to NYU. Please refer to the Support for Students on a Leave section below for more information.

➪ What is a Personal Leave of Absence (LOA) ?

A personal leave of absence is a request for reasons  unrelated to medical or counseling conditions . Personal leaves are voluntary and apply to issues related to personal circumstances, such as a financial issue, a military leave, or academic reasons. A personal leave can only be granted for a maximum of two semesters, not including summer.

How to apply for a Personal Leave of Absence (LOA)?

  • Schedule a meeting with your  program advisor . Your advisor can explain the pros and cons of taking a leave.
  • Apply for a leave of absence in Albert  by selecting “Request Leave of Absence” under the academics tab. Follow the prompts to indicate when your leave will begin, when you plan to return, and the reason for your leave.
  •  Once your leave has been approved, you will receive an email notification.

➪ What is a Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA)?

NYU recognizes that it is sometimes necessary or desirable for a student to take a leave from enrollment for a period of time due to unforeseen medical occurrences/issues.

How to apply for a  Medical  Leave of Absence (MLOA)?

  • Schedule a meeting with your  program advisor .
  • Students  returning from MLOA for  mental health concerns must also contact NYU Counseling & Wellness Services (CWS). for an evaluation or assessment  and submit a  NYU CWS | Certificate of Readiness to Return
  • Students returning from a MLOA  for physical reasons must contact the  Student Health Center and submit an  NYU SHC MLOA Certificate of Readiness to Return | Physical Health
  • Once you have applied for a MLOA in Albert  and followed the steps above with either the NYU Student Health Center or NYU Counseling & Wellness Services, you will receive a formal letter approving your MLOA which will include the required steps on how to return from your MLOA

➪ What is a Non-sanctioned Leave of Absence?

Any student who is inactive — has not enrolled in courses for a semester , has not maintained matriculation or been approved for a leave of absence in Albert — will be placed on a non-sanctioned leave of absence for one term. While on a non-sanctioned leave of absence you are not eligible for NYU student health insurance and lose access to all NYU facilities and resources.

In the term immediately following the term of inactivity (non-sanctioned leave), a student must enroll in courses without exception prior to the  Add/Drop deadline . An inactive student who does not enroll in classes prior to the Add/Drop deadline of the subsequent term will be formally deactivated from the program.

➪ International Students Taking a LOA/MLOA

If you are requesting a LOA or MLOA in addition to following the steps outlined above you are  required to contact the  NYU Office of Global Services  to discuss your immediate plans and any plans you may have to return.

FAQs About Leaves and Withdrawls

When can i apply for a leave of absence.

A leave of absence can be requested up until the add/drop deadline of each semester noted on the NYU Academic Calendar .

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A PERSONAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE?

The first step is to have a conversation with your academic advisor. Your advisor can explain the pros and cons of taking a leave. Then, you should apply for a leave of absence in Albert by selecting “leave of absence” under the academics tab, indicating that your leave is for personal reasons. Once your leave has been approved, you will receive an email notification.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A MEDICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND RETURN FROM ONE?

There are several steps to requesting a medical leave of absence.

DO I HAVE TO PAY ANY FEES TO TAKE A LEAVE OF ABSENCE?

There are no fees assessed for a leave of absence. However, students taking leaves after the add/drop deadline are subject to the  University’s standard tuition refund schedule . For this reason, it is best to submit the request in Albert before the first day of classes.

CAN I CONTINUE TO USE NYU FACILITIES OR RESOURCES DURING MY LEAVE OF ABSENCE?

No, students on leaves of absence do not have access to University resources or facilities for the duration of their leave. However, students on a leave of absence maintain their NYU email account and access to Albert.

HOW DOES A LEAVE OF ABSENCE AFFECT MY ELIGIBILITY FOR NYU HOUSING?

Students taking a personal/financial leave of absence lose their housing renewability and must apply to be housed off the housing waitlist. Students taking a medical leave of absence maintain their housing renewability. The reason is that personal/financial leaves are considered to be voluntary, while medical leaves are taken for reasons beyond the student’s control.

HOW DOES A LEAVE OF ABSENCE AFFECT MY NYU FINANCIAL AID?

Students must reapply for federal financial aid each academic year by submitting a  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to complete the FAFSA for the academic year that corresponds to the semester you plan to return. As a reminder, students must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for federal financial aid.

WILL I HAVE TO BEGIN PAYING BACK STUDENT LOANS IF I TAKE A LEAVE OF ABSENCE?

Once you graduate, drop below half-time enrollment, or leave school, your federal student loans will go into repayment. Similarly, If you have a Graduate PLUS Loan, you will be placed on an automatic deferment while in school and for six months after graduating, leaving school, or dropping below half-time enrollment.

Students who return from leave and re-enroll for at least half-time status will resume in-school deferment. For Unsubsidized and PLUS borrowers, please note that interest will continue to accrue while the loan is in deferment.

If you have any questions about federal loan repayment, you should contact your  Federal Student Loan Servicer .

For students who have borrowed private student loans, each private lender may have different repayment requirements. Please check with your lender to review the terms for taking a leave of absence.

HOW DOES A LEAVE OF ABSENCE AFFECT MY GPH SCHOLARSHIP?

During your leave of absence, your NYU GPH scholarship will not be disbursed. Instead, NYU GPH will retain your scholarship for use during the next eligible term. MINNEAPOLIS — DJ LeMahieu is about to give a rehab assignment another try.

After his previous attempt lasted only one inning before he was pulled with soreness in his injured right foot, the Yankees veteran infielder is set to start a rehab assignment again on Thursday or Friday with Double-A Somerset.

Because it has now been nearly two months since he played in a game, when he suffered the non-displaced fracture by fouling a ball off his foot, LeMahieu will need more than a few games to build up his workload before being ready to join the Yankees.

“We don’t have a hard and fast [number of at-bats] with him, but definitely want him to play games and get some volume under his belt,” manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday before the Yankees beat the Twins 5-1 at Target Field. “Then we’ll see how comfortable he is as he goes at-bat wise.”

Boone said LeMahieu will play the field right away on his rehab assignment but he won’t immediately play a full game, instead building to seven to nine innings over time.

On Tuesday at the club’s player development complex in Tampa, LeMahieu took four or five at-bats against live pitching after doing so for the first time on Saturday.

Boone said he did not know whether LeMahieu would get more imaging on his foot before beginning the rehab assignment.

The 35-year-old had gotten imaging before his first attempt, with doctors wanting to see more healing and pushing back the rehab assignment by four days.

LeMahieu then played one inning and got one at-bat on April 23 before being pulled from the game and shut down for a week.

Also on Tuesday in Tampa, Gerrit Cole (elbow nerve inflammation) completed his fourth bullpen session in which he threw about 36 pitches, a step forward from the 29 on Saturday.

Cole had indicated over the weekend he would need to progress to a two-up bullpen session — meaning throwing the equivalent of one inning, sitting and then throwing more pitches — before advancing to live batting practice, but Tuesday’s session was still only one up.

“Just onward and upward,” Boone said.

Cole and LeMahieu were both flying back to New York later on Tuesday.

Jasson Dominguez (Tommy John surgery) began his rehab assignment on Tuesday with Single-A Tampa, serving as the DH and going 1-for-3 with a walk — the single coming against ex-Yankee Domingo German.

“It’s nice to be back on the field and do what I love,” Dominguez told reporters including the Associated Press. “It feels good. Everything going as planned,”

Injured New York Yankees Jasson Dominguez throwing during a light workout at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees Spring training complex in Tampa Florida.

Dominguez will DH only for the first two weeks before adding outfield to the mix — he is currently throwing up to 150 feet — which will come late in his 20-day rehab clock.

If he has no setbacks, the Yankees will have to either activate him or option him to Triple-A (the latter being more likely, barring injuries to the big league club) by June 3.

Tommy Kahnle (shoulder) had his rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Somerset, where he struck out the side on 10 pitches Tuesday. It marked the third of what is expected to be five rehab appearances.

In addition to Dominguez, infield prospect Jorbit Vivas also started a rehab assignment with Single-A Tampa on Tuesday.

After sustaining a left orbital fracture on the final day of spring training, he had come back to play in two games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in late April, but then went back on the IL after dealing with some aftereffects of the injury.

Stormy Daniels Takes the Stand

The porn star testified for eight hours at donald trump’s hush-money trial. this is how it went..

This transcript was created using speech recognition software. While it has been reviewed by human transcribers, it may contain errors. Please review the episode audio before quoting from this transcript and email [email protected] with any questions.

It’s 6:41 AM. I’m feeling a little stressed because I’m running late. It’s the fourth week of Donald J. Trump’s criminal trial. It’s a white collar trial. Most of the witnesses we’ve heard from have been, I think, typical white collar witnesses in terms of their professions.

We’ve got a former publisher, a lawyer, accountants. The witness today, a little less typical, Stormy Daniels, porn star in a New York criminal courtroom in front of a jury more accustomed to the types of witnesses they’ve already seen. There’s a lot that could go wrong.

From “The New York Times,” I’m Michael Barbaro. This is “The Daily.”

Today, what happened when Stormy Daniels took the stand for eight hours in the first criminal trial of Donald J. Trump. As before, my colleague Jonah Bromwich was inside the courtroom.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

It’s Friday, May 10th.

So it’s now day 14 of this trial. And I think it’s worth having you briefly, and in broad strokes, catch listeners up on the biggest developments that have occurred since you were last on, which was the day that opening arguments were made by both the defense and the prosecution. So just give us that brief recap.

Sure. It’s all been the prosecution’s case so far. And prosecutors have a saying, which is that the evidence is coming in great. And I think for this prosecution, which is trying to show that Trump falsified business records to cover up a sex scandal, to ease his way into the White House in 2016, the evidence has been coming in pretty well. It’s come in well through David Pecker, former publisher of The National Enquirer, who testified that he entered into a secret plot with Trump and Michael Cohen, his fixer at the time, to suppress negative stories about Trump, the candidate.

It came in pretty well through Keith Davidson, who was a lawyer to Stormy Daniels in 2016 and negotiated the hush money payment. And we’ve seen all these little bits and pieces of evidence that tell the story that prosecutors want to tell. And the case makes sense so far. We can’t tell what the jury is thinking, as we always say.

But we can tell that there’s a narrative that’s coherent and that matches up with the prosecution’s opening statement. Then we come to Tuesday. And that day really marks the first time that the prosecution’s strategy seems a little bit risky because that’s the day that Stormy Daniels gets called to the witness stand.

OK, well, just explain why the prosecution putting Stormy Daniels on the stand would be so risky. And I guess it makes sense to answer that in the context of why the prosecution is calling her as a witness at all.

Well, you can see why it makes sense to have her. The hush money payment was to her. The cover-up of the hush money payment, in some ways, concerns her. And so she’s this character who’s very much at the center of this story. But according to prosecutors, she’s not at the center of the crime. The prosecution is telling a story, and they hope a compelling one. And arguably, that story starts with Stormy Daniels. It starts in 2006, when Stormy Daniels says that she and Trump had sex, which is something that Trump has always denied.

So if prosecutors were to not call Stormy Daniels to the stand, you would have this big hole in the case. It would be like, effect, effect, effect. But where is the cause? Where is the person who set off this chain reaction? But Stormy Daniels is a porn star. She’s there to testify about sex. Sex and pornography are things that the jurors were not asked about during jury selection. And those are subjects that bring up all kinds of different complex reactions in people.

And so, when the prosecutors bring Stormy Daniels to the courtroom, it’s very difficult to know how the jurors will take it, particularly given that she’s about to describe a sexual episode that she says she had with the former president. Will the jurors think that makes sense, as they sit here and try to decide a falsifying business records case, or will they ask themselves, why are we hearing this?

So the reason why this is the first time that the prosecution’s strategy is, for journalists like you, a little bit confusing, is because it’s the first time that the prosecution seems to be taking a genuine risk in what they’re putting before these jurors. Everything else has been kind of cut and dry and a little bit more mechanical. This is just a wild card.

This is like live ammunition, to some extent. Everything else is settled and controlled. And they know what’s going to happen. With Stormy Daniels, that’s not the case.

OK, so walk us through the testimony. When the prosecution brings her to the stand, what actually happens?

It starts, as every witness does, with what’s called direct examination, which is a fancy word for saying prosecutors question Stormy Daniels. And they have her tell her story. First, they have her tell the jury about her education and where she grew up and her professional experience. And because of Stormy Daniels’s biography, that quickly goes into stripping, and then goes into making adult films.

And I thought the prosecutor who questioned her, Susan Hoffinger, had this nice touch in talking about that, because not only did she ask Daniels about acting in adult films. But she asked her about writing and directing them, too, emphasizing the more professional aspects of that work and giving a little more credit to the witness, as if to say, well, you may think this or you may think that. But this is a person with dignity who took what she did seriously. Got it.

What’s your first impression of Daniels as a witness?

It’s very clear that she’s nervous. She’s speaking fast. She’s laughing to herself and making small jokes. But the tension in the room is so serious from the beginning, from the moment she enters, that those jokes aren’t landing. So it just feels, like, really heavy and still and almost oppressive in there. So Daniels talking quickly, seeming nervous, giving more answers than are being asked of her by the prosecution, even before we get to the sexual encounter that she’s about to describe, all of that presents a really discomfiting impression, I would say.

And how does this move towards the encounter that Daniels ultimately has?

It starts at a golf tournament in 2006, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Daniels meets Trump there. There are other celebrities there, too. They chatted very briefly. And then she received a dinner invitation from him. She thought it over, she says. And she goes to have dinner with Trump, not at a restaurant, by the way. But she’s invited to join him in the hotel suite.

So she gets to the hotel suite. And his bodyguard is there. And the hotel door is cracked open. And the bodyguard greets her and says she looks nice, this and that. And she goes in. And there’s Donald Trump, just as expected. But what’s not expected, she says, is that he’s not wearing what you would wear to a dinner with a stranger, but instead, she says, silk or satin pajamas. She asked him to change, she says. And he obliges.

He goes, and he puts on a dress shirt and dress pants. And they sit down at the hotel suite’s dining room table. And they have a kind of bizarre dinner. Trump is asking her very personal questions about pornography and safe sex. And she testifies that she teased him about vain and pompous he is. And then at some point, she goes to the bathroom. And she sees that he has got his toiletries in there, his Old Spice, his gold tweezers.

Very specific details.

Yeah, we’re getting a ton of detail in this scene. And the reason we’re getting those is because prosecutors are trying to elicit those details to establish that this is a credible person, that this thing did happen, despite what Donald Trump and his lawyers say. And the reason you can know it happened, prosecutors seem to be saying, is because, look at all these details she can still summon up.

She comes out of the bathroom. And she says that Donald Trump is on the hotel bed. And what stands out to me there is what she describes as a very intense physical reaction. She says that she blacked out. And she quickly clarifies, she doesn’t mean from drugs or alcohol. She means that, she says, that the intensity of this experience was such that, suddenly, she can’t remember every detail. The prosecution asks a question that cuts directly to the sex. Essentially, did you start having sex with him? And Daniels says that she did. And she continues to provide more details than even, I think, the prosecution wanted.

And I think we don’t want to go chapter and verse through this claimed sexual encounter. But I wonder what details stand out and which details feel important, given the prosecution’s strategy here.

All the details stand out because it’s a story about having had sex with a former president. And the more salacious and more private the details feel, the more you’re going to remember them. So we’ll remember that Stormy Daniels said what position they had sex in. We’ll remember that she said he didn’t use a condom. Whether that’s important to the prosecution’s case, now, that’s a much harder question to answer, as we’ve been saying.

But what I can tell you is, as she’s describing having had sex with Donald Trump, and Donald Trump is sitting right there, and Eric Trump, his son, is sitting behind him, seeming to turn a different color as he hears this embarrassment of his father being described to a courtroom full of reporters at this trial, it’s hard to even describe the energy in that room. It was like nothing I had ever experienced. And it was just Daniels’s testimony and, seemingly, the former President’s emotions. And you almost felt like you were trapped in there with both of them as this description was happening.

Well, I think it’s important to try to understand why the prosecution is getting these details, these salacious, carnal, pick your word, graphic details about sex with Donald Trump. What is the value, if other details are clearly making the point that she’s recollecting something?

Well, I think, at this point, we can only speculate. But one thing we can say is, this was uncomfortable. This felt bad. And remember, prosecutor’s story is not about the sex. It’s about trying to hide the sex. So if you’re trying to show a jury why it might be worthwhile to hide a story, it might be worth —

Providing lots of salacious details that a person would want to hide.

— exposing them to how bad that story feels and reminding them that if they had been voters and they had heard that story, and, in fact, they asked Daniels this very question, if you hadn’t accepted hush money, if you hadn’t signed that NDA, is this the story you would have told? And she said, yes. And so where I think they’re going with this, but we can’t really be sure yet, is that they’re going to tell the jurors, hey, that story, you can see why he wanted to cover that up, can’t you?

You mentioned the hush money payments. What testimony does Daniels offer about that? And how does it advance the prosecution’s case of business fraud related to the hush money payments?

So little evidence that it’s almost laughable. She says that she received the hush money. But we actually already heard another witness, her lawyer at the time, Keith Davidson, testify that he had received the hush money payment on her behalf. And she testified about feeling as if she had to sell this story because the election was fast approaching, almost as if her leverage was slipping away because she knew this would be bad for Trump.

That feels important. But just help me understand why it’s important.

Well, what the prosecution has been arguing is that Trump covered up this hush money payment in order to conceal a different crime. And that crime, they say, was to promote his election to the presidency by illegal means.

Right, we’ve talked about this in the past.

So when Daniels ties her side of the payment into the election, it just reminds the jurors maybe, oh, right, this is what they’re arguing.

So how does the prosecution end this very dramatic, and from everything you’re saying, very tense questioning of Stormy Daniels about this encounter?

Well, before they can even end, the defense lawyers go and they consult among themselves. And then, with the jury out of the room, one of them stands up. And he says that the defense is moving for a mistrial.

On what terms?

He says that the testimony offered by Daniels that morning is so prejudicial, so damning to Trump in the eyes of the jury, that the trial can no longer be fair. Like, how could these jurors have heard these details and still be fair when they render their verdict? And he says a memorable expression. He says, you can’t un-ring that bell, meaning they heard it. They can’t un-hear it. It’s over. Throw out this trial. It should be done.

Wow. And what is the response from the judge?

So the judge, Juan Merchan, he hears them out. And he really hears them out. But at the end of their arguments, he says, I do think she went a little too far. He says that. He said, there were things that were better left unsaid.

By Stormy Daniels?

By Stormy Daniels. And he acknowledges that she is a difficult witness. But, he says, the remedy for that is not a mistrial, is not stopping the whole thing right now. The remedy for that is cross-examination. If the defense feels that there are issues with her story, issues with her credibility, they can ask her whatever they want. They can try to win the jury back over. If they think this jury has been poisoned by this witness, well, this is their time to provide the antidote. The antidote is cross-examination. And soon enough, cross-examination starts. And it is exactly as intense and combative as we expected.

We’ll be right back.

So, Jonah, how would you characterize the defense’s overall strategy in this intense cross-examination of Stormy Daniels?

People know the word impeach from presidential impeachments. But it has a meaning in law, too. You impeach a witness, and, specifically, their credibility. And that’s what the defense is going for here. They are going to try to make Stormy Daniels look like a liar, a fraud, an extortionist, a money-grubbing opportunist who wanted to take advantage of Trump and sought to do so by any means necessary.

And what did that impeachment strategy look like in the courtroom?

The defense lawyer who questions Stormy Daniels is a woman named Susan Necheles. She’s defended Trump before. And she’s a bit of a cross-examination specialist. We even saw her during jury selection bring up these past details to confront jurors who had said nasty things about Trump on social media with. And she wants to do the same thing with Daniels. She wants to bring up old interviews and old tweets and things that Daniels has said in the past that don’t match what Daniels is saying from the stand.

What’s a specific example? And do they land?

Some of them land. And some of them don’t. One specific example is that Necheles confronts Daniels with this old tweet, where Daniels says that she’s going to dance down the street if Trump goes to jail. And what she’s trying to show there is that Daniels is out for revenge, that she hates Trump, and that she wants to see him go to jail. And that’s why she’s testifying against him.

And Daniels is very interesting during the cross-examination. It’s almost as if she’s a different person. She kind of squares her shoulders. And she sits up a little straighter. And she leans forward. Daniels is ready to fight. But it doesn’t quite land. The tweet actually says, I’ll dance down the street when he’s selected to go to jail.

And Daniels goes off on this digression about how she knows that people don’t get selected to go to jail. That’s not how it works. But she can’t really unseat this argument, that she’s a political enemy of Donald Trump. So that one kind of sticks, I would say. But there are other moves that Necheles tries to pull that don’t stick.

So unlike the prosecution, which typically used words like adult, adult film, Necheles seems to be taking every chance she can get to say porn, or pornography, or porn star, to make it sound base or dirty. And so when she starts to ask Daniels about actually being in pornography, writing, acting, and directing sex films, she tries to land a punch line, Necheles does. She says, so you have a lot of experience making phony stories about sex appear to be real, right?

As if to say, perhaps this story you have told about entering Trump’s suite in Lake Tahoe and having sex with him was made up.

Just another one of your fictional stories about sex. But Daniels comes back and says, the sex in the films, it’s very much real, just like what happened to me in that room. And so, when you have this kind of combat of a lawyer cross-examining very aggressively and the witness fighting back, you can feel the energy in the room shift as one lands a blow or the other does. But here, Daniels lands one back. And the other issue that I think Susan Necheles runs into is, she tries to draw out disparities from interviews that Daniels gave, particularly to N-TOUCH, very early on once the story was out.

It’s kind of like a tabloid magazine?

But some of the disparities don’t seem to be landing quite like Necheles would want. So she tries to do this complicated thing about where the bodyguard was in the room when Daniels walked into the room, as described in an interview in a magazine. But in that magazine interview, as it turns out, Daniels mentioned that Trump was wearing pajamas. And so, if I’m a juror, I don’t care where the bodyguard is. I’m thinking about, oh, yeah, I remember that Stormy Daniels said now in 2024 that Trump was wearing pajamas.

I’m curious if, as somebody in the room, you felt that the defense was effective in undermining Stormy Daniels’s credibility? Because what I took from the earlier part of our conversation was that Stormy Daniels is in this courtroom on behalf of the prosecution to tell a story that’s uncomfortable and has the kind of details that Donald Trump would be motivated to try to hide. And therefore, this defense strategy is to say, those details about what Trump might want to hide, you can’t trust them. So does this back and forth effectively hurt Stormy Daniels’s credibility, in your estimation?

I don’t think that Stormy Daniels came off as perfectly credible about everything she testified about. There are incidents that were unclear or confusing. There were things she talked about that I found hard to believe, when she, for instance, denied that she had attacked Trump in a tweet or talked about her motivations. But about what prosecutors need, that central story, the story of having had sex with him, we can’t know whether it happened.

But there weren’t that many disparities in these accounts over the years. In terms of things that would make me doubt the story that Daniels was telling, details that don’t add up, those weren’t present. And you don’t have to take my word for that, nor should you. But the judge is in the room. And he says something very, very similar.

What does he say? And why does he say it?

Well, he does it when the defense, again, at the end of the day on Thursday, calls for a mistrial.

With a similar argument as before?

Not only with a similar argument as before, but, like, almost the exact same argument. And I would say that I was astonished to see them do this. But I wasn’t because I’ve covered other trials where Trump is the client. And in those trials, the lawyers, again and again, called for a mistrial.

And what does Judge Marchan say in response to this second effort to seek a mistrial?

Let me say, to this one, he seems a little less patient. He says that after the first mistrial ruling, two days before, he went into his chambers. And he read every decision he had made about the case. He took this moment to reflect on the first decision. And he found that he had, in his own estimation, which is all he has, been fair and not allowed evidence that was prejudicial to Trump into this trial. It could continue. And so he said that again. And then he really almost turned on the defense. And he said that the things that the defense was objecting to were things that the defense had made happen.

He says that in their opening statement, the defense could have taken issue with many elements of the case, about whether there were falsified business records, about any of the other things that prosecutors are saying happened. But instead, he says, they focused their energy on denying that Trump ever had sex with Daniels.

And so that was essentially an invitation to the prosecution to call Stormy Daniels as a witness and have her say from the stand, yes, I had this sexual encounter. The upshot of it is that the judge not only takes the defense to task. But he also just says that he finds Stormy Daniels’s narrative credible. He doesn’t see it as having changed so much from year to year.

Interesting. So in thinking back to our original question here, Jonah, about the idea that putting Stormy Daniels on the stand was risky, I wonder if, by the end of this entire journey, you’re reevaluating that idea because it doesn’t sound like it ended up being super risky. It sounded like it ended up working reasonably well for the prosecution.

Well, let me just assert that it doesn’t really matter what I think. The jury is going to decide this. There’s 12 people. And we can’t know what they’re thinking. But my impression was that, while she was being questioned by the prosecution for the prosecution’s case, Stormy Daniels was a real liability. She was a difficult witness for them.

And the judge said as much. But when the defense cross-examined her, Stormy Daniels became a better witness, in part because their struggles to discredit her may have actually ended up making her story look more credible and stronger. And the reason that matters is because, remember, we said that prosecutors are trying to fill this hole in their case. Well, now, they have. The jury has met Stormy Daniels. They’ve heard her account. They’ve made of it what they will. And now, the sequence of events that prosecutors are trying to line up as they seek prison time for the former President really makes a lot of sense.

It starts with what Stormy Daniels says with sex in a hotel suite in 2006. It picks up years later, as Donald Trump is trying to win an election and, prosecutors say, suppressing negative stories, including Stormy Daniels’s very negative story. And the story that prosecutors are telling ends with Donald Trump orchestrating the falsification of business records to keep that story concealed.

Well, Jonah, thank you very much. We appreciate it.

Of course, thanks for having me.

The prosecution’s next major witness will be Michael Cohen, the former Trump fixer who arranged for the hush money payment to Stormy Daniels. Cohen is expected to take the stand on Monday.

Here’s what else you need to know today. On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a defiant response to warnings from the United States that it would stop supplying weapons to Israel if Israel invades the Southern Gaza City of Rafah. So far, Israel has carried out a limited incursion into the city where a million civilians are sheltering, but has threatened a full invasion. In a statement, Netanyahu said, quote, “if we need to stand alone, we will stand alone.”

Meanwhile, high level ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas have been put on hold in part because of anger over Israel’s incursion into Rafah.

Background reading

In a second day of cross-examination, Stormy Daniels resisted the implication she had tried to shake down Donald J. Trump by selling her story of a sexual liaison.

Here are six takeaways from Ms. Daniels’s earlier testimony.
