10 Important Roles of a Mother in Family Life

A good mom changes everything and the importance of mothers cannot be understated. A mother plays many roles over the course of her child’s life –each one vital to shaping her child in different ways. Whether she is the primary caregiver, working parent, or both she holds an incredibly important role in her family.

When my firstborn came careening into our world, I didn’t know what to expect. What was my new role of mother in my family and how could I embrace each aspect in a positive way?

the role of a mother in the family large text overlay over photo of a mom and son sitting on a beach

I did know, of course, sort of. I had read “ What to Expect When You’re Expecting ” at least three times through, plus 5-10 other parenting, nursing, and birthing books. And about 1000 online articles about being a mom and caring for a baby.

I had listened to advice at baby showers: “sleep when the baby sleeps” and “it’s life-changing” and “cherish every minute, it goes so fast.”

But I still didn’t know what to expect in this essential role.

At first, it was all consuming just to keep this tiny miracle alive . To stop her screeching, to get her latched properly, to keep her comfy, to hope I wasn’t irreversibly screwing her up.

As the intensity of the early months faded,we came up for air, and my role in our family unit had shifted.

I wasn’t just Katie anymore. I wasn’t just a wife. I was a mother. And it more than any other role changed me. I lost myself in it for a bit , it felt impossible not to, but I also found myself: stronger, gentler, more alive than ever.

1. The Caregiver

I was acting as her first care-giver.

 • When I broke myself to bring her into the world alive.
 • When I used by body to feed and sustain her for months.
 • When I changed each gag-inducing dirty diaper.
 • When I pushed her little arms into the thick snowsuit, zipping her snug as a bug against the elements.
 • When I steadied her arms as she walked, and spooned baby food into her mouth….

Whether you are at home full time or a working mother or anything in between , this role of Caregiver is an incredibly exhausting, breathtakingly beautiful miracle.

This role is most intense with younger children, but will take less time in later years. My role as a caregiver is shifting as my kids get older… sometimes that makes me sad, and sometimes it deeply thrills me–the complicated and mysterious joy of motherhood.

2. The Health Care Provider

As part of my health care provider role in family life I am the nurse healing scrape with a mother’s kiss, spooning chicken noodle soup into bowls, making doctor’s appointments, and dosing tylenol for children’s fevers.

The mother’s role of health care provider is a big one!

3. The Activity Coordinator

As the activity coordinator I am in charge of my children’s schedule. I keep track of their school activities, play dates, doctor’s appointments, music lessons and any number of other events. Not to mention making sure all the calendars synch up!

That is a huge job in a child’s life–one you may not fully appreciate until YOU are the adult trying to balance all the things.

4. The Child’s Teacher

I am my child’s first language arts teacher as I read my children nursery rhymes. I am the first math teacher as I count to 10 over and over again. As they begin school I help them understand how academic achievement can help their lives and proof papers and help them understand the importance of basic math skills as we cook together.

5. The Financial Planner

Kids have no idea what money is or how to use it. One of my roles in my child’s life is to act as their financial planner taking care of all the household expenses and teaching them to be responsible and generous with money.

In our house I do this by allowing our children to earn money for small jobs around the house. Then we help them learn to save, spend and give the money that they earn.

6. The Emotional Nurturer

While I am meeting those little physical needs as caregiver, I also took on the role of Nurturer, meeting my child’s emotional needs.

When I answered her squawks at 3 am, I told her I would always come for her.

When I picked her up and kissed her ouchies as she learned the messy business of walking upright, I told her I cared about her pain and I would do anything in my power to take it away. These small moments of meeting my child’s emotional needs have a deep impact on her life.

As a nurturing mother I am entrusted to the emotional needs of my kids. I hold them when they’re sad, I cheer with them when they’re happy, I talk with them when they’re scared, and help them with their big angry feelings too. It’s one of the biggest responsibilities of a mother.

As I was lay on the floor at 6 weeks postpartum feeling completely exhausted and overwhelmed, all I wanted was my mom. A mother’s nurturing never stops being needed by her children. I never stop learning from my own mom, never stop needing her and neither will my kids.

7. The Relationship Coach

I mediate a lot of disagreements in my child’s life (especially among siblings). I help them with problem resolution at home and out an about with friends. Eventually I will help them with dating skills and navigating all the social life drama of high school.

I coach them on how to apologize and make restitution. I give them conversation starters and good questions to help them form friendships.

8. The Home Caretaker

When my kids are small my role as the home caretaker includes being the chef, housekeeper, groundskeeper, laundress and more. Over time as my kids grow, I begin to include them in these undertakings so they can learn the life skills they need in a safe, “it’s okay to fail” environment.

“We all work together to keep our house clean.”

In my family we chant this little motto together to remind us that while my role as a mother may now include more of the home caretaker, it is a role that EVERYONE in our family takes part in.

9. The Brain of the Family

While this may be dad’s role in some families in most families I know, mom carries the mental weight of the family.

From knowing what groceries need ordered to who needs a dentist appointment to planning the next family vacation to deciding what to buy for Christmas presents– the role of the mother as the brain for her family members is a an important one.

As the brain of the family moms often have to think and remember things for everyone–which is mentally exhausting! It’s okay to delegate some of the mental load of parenting to your spouse and children as they get older.

10. The Spiritual Guide

My final role as a mother is as a spiritual guide, teaching faith and moral values to my children. This is perhaps the mother’s role with the most vital impact. Guiding my kid to be a kind human being who loves people and loves God is my life’s greatest work..

photo of family together at church

There isn’t much spiritual conversation happening with a baby. But, as a Christian mother it was important to me to be guiding my children and teaching them faith, even when they were too little to understand it.

I read them Bible stories as babies. I actually read the Jesus Storybook Bible out loud to my daughter during my last month of pregnancy. I sang hymns and worship songs over them. I clapped their chubby hands to songs in church.

Now that they’re bigger I get to have bigger conversations, bigger teachings, and most important, bigger modeling of what a life of following Jesus looks like on a daily basis.

Answering my kids questions about faith has grown my faith in such big ways. They ask questions I haven’t thought to ask in a long time. I’m so grateful for their questions and that God’s Word can stand up to their childlike scrutiny.

I’ve learned so much about God’s heart for me through mothering my kids: forgiveness, kindness, unconditional love, PATIENCE, perseverance. I’m so thankful that as I guide them spiritually (both in my Christian faith and in morals in general), I’m also learning and growing right along with them.

I want my children to know God’s character and become children of character.

I will play many different roles in life, but the role of mother is one of my biggest and most important. I don’t have to be a perfect parent, I just have to be MY child’s parent. I’m the one God specifically created to be their coach, cheerleader, caregiver, and spiritual guide.

You are that gift to your kids too. You are the perfect mother, the exact right one, hand picked by God to provide for them physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I know being a mom can be exhausting and thankless, but keep your head up sister, you are doing a massive and indispensable and beautiful things “just” by being a mom.

The Biological Role of Mothers

Emotional development, cognitive development, social development, the modern mother’s role, actionable tips for mothers.

The connection between a mother and her child begins long before the child is born. From the moment of conception, a unique biological bond is formed that lays the foundation for the child’s future health and development.

A. The Biological Connection

During pregnancy, a mother provides not just physical nourishment, but also a secure environment for the baby to grow. This biological connection extends beyond birth through breastfeeding, where mothers provide their infants with essential nutrients, antibodies, and hormones that contribute to healthy growth and immune system development.

B. Maternal Health and Child Development

The health of a mother can significantly impact the development of her child. For instance, maternal nutrition during pregnancy is crucial for the baby’s brain development and can influence cognitive abilities later in life. Similarly, a mother’s mental health , particularly stress levels and emotional state, can also affect the child’s development. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to high-stress environments during pregnancy can potentially impact a child’s development, including their ability to manage stress in adulthood.

However, it’s important to note that while a mother’s health plays a significant role in a child’s development, it’s just one piece of a complex puzzle. Other factors such as genetics, environmental influences, and postnatal care also contribute to how a child develops. In the next sections, we’ll take a closer look at how mothers influence their children’s emotional, cognitive, and social development.

One of the most profound ways mothers influence their children is through emotional development. From the earliest stages of life, a child looks to their mother for comfort, guidance, and understanding. This relationship plays a significant role in shaping a child’s emotional growth.

A. The Role of Mothers in Emotional Development

Mothers are often the primary caregivers, providing the first model of emotional behavior for their children. Through their reactions, expressions, and interactions, mothers teach their children how to identify, understand, and manage their emotions. When a child experiences distress, a mother’s comforting presence can help them feel safe and understood, fostering their ability to regulate their own emotions over time.

Additionally, the quality of the mother-child relationship can impact a child’s future emotional health. A secure attachment with the mother has been linked to higher self-esteem, better relationship skills, and lower risk of anxiety and depression later in life.

B. Real-Life Examples

Consider a simple scenario where a toddler falls and scrapes their knee. A mother’s response to this situation – offering comfort, validating the child’s pain, and helping them calm down – teaches the child that it’s okay to express pain and seek comfort. Over time, these experiences accumulate, helping the child learn to navigate their emotions effectively.

In another example, consider a teenager facing peer pressure. If they have grown up with a mother who has consistently provided emotional support, they are more likely to possess the emotional resilience and self-confidence to withstand such pressures.

Cognitive development refers to the growth of a child’s ability to think, learn, reason, and problem-solve. Mothers play an essential role in nurturing these skills from a child’s earliest days.

Here are some studies that highlight the influence of mothers on cognitive development:

 • Mothers’ and fathers’ sensitivity and children’s cognitive development in low-income, rural families: This study examines the effects of maternal and paternal caregiving on children’s cognitive development. It suggests that the caregiving practices of mothers and fathers can have spillover effects on their children’s cognitive growth. Source
 • The effect of postpartum depression on child cognitive development and behavior: A review and critical analysis of the literature: This review suggests that postpartum depression (PPD) may impact a child’s cognitive development, reinforcing the importance of a mother’s mental health on her child’s development. Source
 • The cognitive development of 5-year-old children of postnatally depressed mothers: This research indicates that the mother-child relationship may modify any earlier effects on child cognitive development, highlighting the importance of maternal mental health and the quality of the mother-child relationship. Source
 • The influence of mothers’ and fathers’ sensitivity in the first year of life on children’s cognitive outcomes at 18 and 36 months: This study indicates that parental sensitivity can positively impact children’s language and cognitive development. Source
 • Infants’ persistence and mothers’ teaching as predictors of toddlers’ cognitive development: This study explores how maternal teaching can contribute to cognitive development in early childhood . Source

These studies collectively suggest that mothers play a significant role in their children’s cognitive development, emphasizing the importance of their mental health, caregiving practices, and the quality of their relationship with their children.

Social development is a crucial aspect of a child’s overall growth, encompassing their ability to interact, communicate, empathize, and form relationships with others. Mothers play a pivotal role in shaping these skills from the child’s infancy.

A. Mothers’ Influence on Social Skills and Behaviors

Mothers contribute significantly to their children’s social development in various ways. They are often the first ones to teach children about communication, both verbal and non-verbal. By responding to a baby’s coos and smiles, a mother encourages the child to express themselves and interact with the world around them.

As children grow older, mothers help them understand complex emotions, teaching them how to express these feelings appropriately. They also guide children in developing empathy by encouraging them to consider other people’s feelings.

Additionally, through their own behavior, mothers model essential social skills like sharing, cooperation, and respect. For example, when a mother shares a toy with a toddler and encourages the toddler to do the same with their peers, she is teaching the child about sharing and fairness.

B. Long-Term Impacts of a Mother’s Influence

The social skills that children learn from their mothers can have lasting impacts on their social development. Children who are taught empathy, kindness, and effective communication tend to have better relationships with their peers as they grow older.

Moreover, children who observe their mothers handling conflicts calmly and respectfully may learn to do the same in their interactions, contributing to healthier relationships in adulthood.

Here are some research studies that highlight the role of mothers in their children’s social development:

 • Maternal sensitivity and social support predict child’s social competence: This study suggests that maternal sensitivity and social support can predict a child’s social competence, emphasizing the role of mothers in shaping their children’s social behaviors . Source
 • Mother-child and father-child play interaction: The importance of parental playfulness as a moderator of the links between parental behavior and child negativity: This study indicates that playful interactions between mothers and their children can contribute to the development of positive social behaviors in children. Source
 • The impact of woman abuse on children’s social development: Research and theoretical perspectives: While this study focuses on the negative effects of woman abuse, it also underscores the influence of mothers on children’s social development, both positive and negative. Source
 • The Syracuse University Family Development Research Program: Long-Range Impact of an Early Intervention with Low-Income Children and Their Families: This research highlights how consistent contact and guidance from mothers can significantly impact a child’s social development. Source
 • In the mix, yet on the margins: The place of families in urban neighborhood and child development research: This study underscores the role of mothers in fostering social competence in their children, particularly in challenging environments. Source
 • Emotion regulation as a scientific construct: Methodological challenges and directions for child development research: This research establishes a link between mother-child interaction and the development of emotion regulation—a key social skill—in children. Source

These studies collectively highlight the critical role mothers play in shaping their children’s social skills and behaviors.

The role of mothers has significantly evolved over time, influenced by societal changes, advancements in technology, shifts in family structures, and evolving views on parenting.

A. Evolution of the Mother’s Role

Historically, mothers were primarily responsible for nurturing and caring for their children. However, over time, this role has greatly expanded. Today’s mothers often juggle multiple roles – they are not only caregivers but also breadwinners, educators, coaches, and more.

With the rise of dual-income households, many mothers now balance work and family responsibilities. Additionally, the increasing recognition of early childhood education’s importance has led mothers to play a more active role in their children’s cognitive and academic development.

Furthermore, societal shifts towards gender equality have led to a redistribution of parenting responsibilities, with fathers becoming more involved in child-rearing. This has allowed mothers to pursue personal interests and careers, redefining motherhood beyond traditional caregiving roles.

B. Current Societal Expectations and Pressures

Despite these positive shifts, modern mothers face unique challenges and pressures. Society often expects mothers to excel in all their roles – to be perfect parents, successful professionals, and fulfill their personal aspirations, often without adequate support or resources.

Mothers may face societal judgment for their parenting choices, such as decisions about work, childcare, or discipline strategies. They are often expected to instinctively know how to care for their children and may face criticism if they seek help or advice.

Moreover, the constant exposure to idealized images of motherhood on social media can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and pressure. Mothers may feel compelled to compare themselves to these unrealistic standards, leading to stress and guilt.

Here are several research studies that explore the evolution of a mother’s role over time:

 • Mothers of the new generation: This study explores how the role of mothers evolved in Germany during the early 20th century, including shifts towards advocating for mothers’ rights and changes in Western ideas of motherhood. Source
 • The long-term evolution of the family structure of teenage and older mothers: This study examines the changing roles and experiences of teenage and older mothers over time, suggesting shifts in societal norms and expectations. Source
 • How Moroccan mothers and fathers view child development and their role in their children’s education: This research provides insight into how mothers’ roles in their children’s education have evolved in Morocco, highlighting cultural shifts and changes in parental involvement. Source
 • Mothers’ involvement in caring for their premature infants: an historical overview: This study traces the evolution of mothers’ roles in caring for premature infants, from the development of the incubator to present times, emphasizing the growing recognition of mothers’ critical role in early mother-infant relationships. Source

These studies collectively highlight how the role of mothers has evolved over time, shaped by societal, cultural, and technological changes .

Navigating motherhood can be a challenging yet rewarding journey. Here are some practical tips to support your child’s development and manage the complexities of modern motherhood:

Practical Advice for Supporting Child Development

 • Create a Nurturing Environment : Provide a safe, loving, and stimulating environment for your child. Encourage exploration, creativity, and learning through play.
 • Be Present and Engaged : Quality time is essential. Be present during interactions with your child, whether you’re playing, reading a book, or simply talking about their day.
 • Promote Open Communication : Foster an environment where your child feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and emotions. This will enhance their emotional intelligence and strengthen your bond.
 • Encourage Independence : Allow your child to do tasks on their own, like dressing up or tidying their toys. This helps build their confidence and self-reliance.
 • Model Positive Behavior : Children learn by imitation, so model the behaviors and attitudes you want them to adopt, such as empathy, kindness, and patience.

Encouragement and Reassurance for Mothers

 • Embrace Your Unique Journey : There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to motherhood. Each family is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Trust your instincts and don’t be swayed by comparison.
 • Ask for Help When Needed : It’s okay to seek help. Whether it’s from your partner, family, friends, or professionals, don’t hesitate to ask for support when you need it.
 • Take Care of Yourself : Remember that self-care isn’t selfish. Taking time to rest and recharge can make you a better parent. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
 • Celebrate Small Wins : Motherhood is filled with small but significant victories. Celebrate them. Every step your child takes towards growth is a testament to your hard work.
 • Be Kind to Yourself : You’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough. Don’t beat yourself up over mistakes or imperfections. Motherhood is a learning process, and every day is a new opportunity to grow alongside your child.

Remember, while motherhood can be challenging, it’s also one of the most enriching experiences. You’re doing an amazing job, and you’re the perfect mother for your child.

Throughout this discussion, we’ve explored the multifaceted role of mothers in child development, underscoring their crucial influence on their children’s cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Mothers guide their children’s early learning experiences, shape their emotional understanding, and help them develop essential social skills and behaviors.

In the modern world, the role of mothers has evolved significantly, encompassing not just caregiving but also professional responsibilities, educational involvement, and personal pursuits. However, this expansion of roles comes with unique societal expectations and pressures that modern mothers must navigate.

Despite these challenges, there are practical strategies that mothers can employ to support their children’s development effectively. These include creating a nurturing environment, promoting open communication, encouraging independence, and modeling positive behaviors. It’s also essential for mothers to embrace their unique parenting journey, seek help when needed, prioritize self-care, and celebrate small victories.

Once you have mastered such elements of parenting, you might even like to earn a degree in child psychology to delve deeper into things like children’s mental and emotional development. But before you check out child psychology jobs , make sure it is the right path for you.

In closing, while the journey of motherhood may be filled with challenges and pressures, it’s important to remember the significant impact mothers have on their children’s development. Mothers play an irreplaceable role in shaping the next generation, and their efforts deserve recognition, support, and celebration. To all mothers out there, remember that you’re doing an incredible job, and every step you take contributes to your child’s journey towards becoming a well-rounded individual.

An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

Why Mothers Are Our Number-One Heroes

Mothers fulfill at least a dozen important psychological functions of heroism..

Scott T. Allison

Each year we celebrate Mother’s Day and for good reason. Our mothers are our number one heroes, according to our surveys . Fathers occupy second place in our hero surveys, but they are a distant second.

Mothers are indeed the mother of all heroes.

How do mothers do it? Over the past decade, psychologists have been able to identify at least 12 functions of heroes and heroism:

 • Heroes give us hope.
 • Heroes energize us.
 • Heroes develop us.
 • Heroes heal us.
 • Heroes impart wisdom .
 • Heroes are role models for morality .
 • Heroes offer safety and protection.
 • Heroes give us positive emotions.
 • Heroes give us meaning and purpose.
 • Heroes provide social connection and reduce loneliness .
 • Heroes help individuals achieve personal goals .
 • Heroes help society achieve societal goals .

Our mothers play a role in fulfilling these 12 functions, either directly or indirectly. This list of hero functions tells us that mothers offer benefits that span many dimensions of human well-being.

First, Mothers confer basic survival benefits (e.g., safety and healing). They protect us when we’re young and vulnerable and are there for us when we get sick or injured. Second, consistent with recent research, mothers give us cognitive benefits, such as intelligence , creativity , and wisdom .

Third, mothers offer motivational benefits. They are our biggest cheerleaders and inspire us to become our best selves. Fourth, mothers provide emotional benefits. Although there are obvious exceptions, mothers are often warmer and more nurturant than fathers.

Fifth, mothers bestow moral and spiritual benefits. Mothers teach us empathy and compassion for others. As children, we watch our mothers’ selflessness and daily sacrifices and learn that we’re all called to perform these acts of kindness for others. Finally, our mothers offer existential benefits such as meaning and purpose. They show us that connection and love for family and friends are the foundation for living a healthy life.

In short, mothers help us survive, and they help us thrive. They help us through our worst times and prepare us for our best times. Fathers do these things, too, but mothers somehow have an edge.

One of the most important research findings about heroes is that they don’t have to be physically present to help us survive and thrive. Research shows that just remembering our heroes can do the job for us. Nostalgia for our mothers, whether they’re alive or gone, can produce these 12 benefits of heroism. We all benefit from the memory of our heroes, often in ways we’re unaware of.

Mother’s Day far exceeds Father’s Day regarding greeting card sales and gift expenditures, and for good reason. Mothers are our Number One Hero because they shape us in the best of ways. They are there for us when we need emotional support. Mothers love us and hug us. They comfort us when we most need it and role model love in countless ways.

Social norms are changing, and we now see more fathers taking on the role of nurturers than in previous generations. But the emerging science of heroism helps explain why we reserve a special place in our hearts for our heroic mothers.

‘Timeless Importance of Mothers’ One Constant in Changing World Facing Multiple Challenges, Says Secretary-General in Message on Day of Families

‘timeless importance of mothers’ one constant in changing world facing Multiple challenges, says Secretary-General in message on day of families Following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message for the International Day of Families, observed 15 May: This year’s International Day of Families, being commemorated under the theme, “Mothers and Families: Challenges in a Changing World,” focuses on the important role of mothers for families and communities around the world. Mothers play a critical role in the family, which is a powerful force for social cohesion and integration. The mother-child relationship is vital for the healthy development of children. And mothers are not only caregivers; they are also breadwinners for their families. Yet women continue to face major ‑‑ and even life-threatening ‑‑ challenges in motherhood. Childbirth, which should be a cause for celebration, is a grave health risk for too many women in developing countries. Improving maternal health is the Millennium Development Goal on which the least progress has been made. A woman in a least-developed country is 300 times more likely to die in childbirth or from pregnancy-related complications than a woman in a developed country. We must make pregnancy and childbirth safer by enabling health systems to provide family planning, skilled attendance at birth and emergency obstetric care. Violence against women, many of whom are mothers, remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations of our time. It has far-reaching consequences ‑‑ endangering the lives of women and girls, harming their families and communities, and damaging the very fabric of societies. Ending and preventing violence against women should be a key priority for all countries. We must also ensure universal access to education. The benefits of educating women and girls accrue not only to individual families but to whole countries, unlocking the potential of women to contribute to broader development efforts. Statistics also show that educated mothers are much more likely to keep their children in school, meaning that the benefits of education transcend generations. As we strive to support mothers in their caregiving work, we should develop and expand family-friendly policies and services, such as childcare centres, that would reduce some of the workload placed on women. Women and men alike need stronger public support to share equally in work and family responsibilities. Families built on the recognition of equality between women and men will contribute to more stable and productive societies. We face multiple challenges in our changing world, but one factor remains constant: the timeless importance of mothers and their invaluable contribution to raising the next generation. By rewarding their efforts and enhancing their living conditions, we can secure a better future for all. * *** * For information media • not an official record

An Ode to Those Who Mother Us

By Catherine Pearson Illustrations by Monica Garwood

When her children were toddlers, Sara Walcott lived far away from her parents. But a couple from her church helped fill the gap, watching the children so she could enjoy a few minutes of calm every week. “They became Sunday grandmas,” said Ms. Walcott, 53, who lives in Macon, Ga. After one “grandma” passed away, Ms. Walcott assumed a daughter’s role, checking on the surviving one daily. “This relationship,” she said, “has been a blessing to us all.”

Those who love and care for us are not always our parents. For Mother’s Day, The Times asked readers to tell us about the mother figures in their lives.

Ruth lied to my parents. When she interviewed for the job of taking care of my four older siblings and me, she said she had lots of experience caring for children. Truth was, she’d never held a baby before in her life. She let me stay up late on Sunday nights, curled up next to her in an overstuffed chair, watching our favorite television shows. She let me “drive” her old green Ford, holding me on her lap while I steered. She taught me to make Norwegian wreath cookies and Swedish meatballs from scratch. She taught me that nobody is perfect. I experienced unconditional love and so did she.

Mrs. Halbeck, my third- and fourth-grade teacher in Kansas City, Mo., in the 1960s, made no secret that she found me delightful, and her support and affection meant the world to me. I clung to her optimism and cheerful approval. To this day, more than a half-century later, I still have a postcard from New York that she sent every child in her third-grade class.

I met Jacqueline during my junior year abroad in France. She needed an English tutor for her son, and I was happy to make some easy spending money. I was immediately enthralled by her characteristically French stubbornness and her uncharacteristic willingness to scoop me up as her “petite Américaine.” Jacqueline introduced me to kir royale, pâté on toast — bien grillé!— and the dazzling, twinkling magnificence of a Paris-by-night tour in her car. She was a bright star to all who knew her — brighter than all the lights in Paris combined. It’s now a little dimmer without her.

My first year teaching, I was living in a new country and had been married less than a week. My mentor teacher Patty quickly became my confidante and my “mama.” Before the first day of school, I realized with growing dread that I had no idea what to do with my students. I tried to be cool and asked her if she had a minute. Patty smiled and said, “Pull up a chair, darlin’, this will take more than a minute!”

In the coming years, she taught me how to make pie crust, how to use binoculars and to wear a blazer for parent-teacher conferences. Patty drove for hours to cheer me on at marathons and triathlons, and folded me into her family completely. Recently, Patty and her husband have had some health challenges. I call most days, and have flown there four times in the last seven months. It’s my turn to support Patty.

I come from a multicultural background, but the Puerto Rican side of the family lived far away. Alina, my best friend’s mom when I was in the third grade, taught me so much about my culture. Going to the store was a lesson in salsa music, visiting a theme park was a vocabulary lesson (“Fallon, ven aqui!”), taking a shower was a lesson in how to care for my hair and holidays were a lesson in large family gatherings and delicious food. All of these little things added up to a more full picture of my culture. Without Alina, I wouldn’t know a part of myself.

My mother died when I was 19, one month before I was supposed to study abroad in Cambridge, England. When I showed up, Linda, my host mother, picked me up from the bus stop and made me tea and crumpets. The first thing she told me was that I could cry whenever I needed to. A dam broke, and I just cried and cried. Even though I was only supposed to stay with Linda’s family for a couple of days, they picked me up every weekend from the university for the remainder of the semester. We’re still in touch 25 years later, and whenever I see Linda, she still treats me like her own daughter.

Tenzin became our nanny when I returned to work, five months after giving birth to my youngest daughter. She taught my baby to take a bottle and solved her dry scalp with coconut oil. She planned fun adventures for my toddler around the city. When I contracted the coxsackievirus from my toddler and my throat was raw with sores, she made me a beef broth from scratch with Tibetan dumplings and sent me to bed. She guided me through my early days of motherhood, understanding in a way I didn’t that new mothers need mothering as much as their babies do.

Mom passed away when I was 5, and I was mothered by three unmarried aunts and two older cousins in an all-female household. It was a caring, nurturing but feisty upbringing that I got from this ragtag bunch of artsy idealists, who raised me to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be and do anything I set my mind to.

My fifth-grade teacher, Miss Jordan, was a powerful example of what a Black woman could be. Miss Jordan believed that education did not just include reading, writing and arithmetic. She introduced us to culture. Somehow, she put together trips to Radio City Music Hall and other events at little or no cost to our families. When I became a high school teacher decades later, I often told my students about how impactful she had been on my life. Sadly, I never got to tell Miss Jordan any of this. When I was in sixth grade, she became gravely ill and died.

Shortly after college, I moved to Japan to teach English. A co-worker named Yoshibe looked after me. I spoke no Japanese, and she spoke no English. But for three years, with humor and candor, Yoshibe-san managed to orient me to the routines and protocols of a Japanese office, and to life in a country entirely new to me. She had me over to eat yakisoba and grilled fish (my favorites) with her husband and young daughters. Early on, she pointed out that instead of the word for the stamp I used to sign my name (inkan), I had used the word for jock itch (inkin). We were both mortified! As I prepare for a trip to Japan, where I will have dinner with Yoshibe-san for the first time in almost 30 years, I’m not sure how to adequately thank my Japanese mom. But when I see her, I will sure try.

MARY HAYES , 56, INDIANAPOLIS, IND.

My mother died on my 16th birthday. She left me many “mothers.” Flossy, Frankye, Viola and Lois. Aunt Flossy was five years older than my mom and was her best friend. She had worked on her feet since she was 14, as a waitress and soda jerker, retiring at age 84. Mom and I lived with Frankye and her three children in Walla Walla, Wash., while my father was in the state penitentiary. Viola, who lived next door to us in Northern Idaho and belonged to a Swedish “homesteader” family, embraced me as if I were her own. Lois, who will be 95 soon, taught me that it was possible to enjoy a hamburger without ketchup. I lived with her family in Seattle for three summers. I am blessed to have had each teach me, love me and guide me.

I walked into the Alcoholics Anonymous room as a desperate and depleted 18-year-old alcoholic. Colleen, a 32-year-old mom of two, became my sponsor. She was the first woman to love me unconditionally. She encouraged me to dream, and helped me navigate college — from a G.E.D., to a bachelor’s to a master’s in education. She taught me about money and kept me from repeating generational poverty. I’m now a high school teacher, mother and mentor to other young women. My superpower is believing in teenagers, thanks to Colleen, who believed in me.

WENDY RICE , 55, BELLINGHAM, WASH.

Dr. Greenberg had high standards, and her history class was one of the best educational experiences of my life. She shared her love of Bach with me, and this sparked a deeper interest in classical music and the church. Dr. Greenberg passed away in 2023, and I am looking forward to honoring her friendship, terrific sense of humor, great intellect and her love of England by singing during a choir residency at Gloucester Cathedral this summer.

MANUEL FIGALLO , 54, ARLINGTON, VA.

My sister Rita was born six years before I was. If I had a nightmare and woke my mother up, she would tell me to climb into bed with Rita. I loved my mother, who was sweet but overwhelmed with raising four children while my dad worked long hours six days a week. Rita was always there, always loving. She introduced me to the library and cleaned me up when I was in second grade and had an upset stomach in the school bathroom. I was the maid of honor at her small wedding, and she was my matron of honor. Once, my fiancé and I were in a movie theater watching a comedy. After a few minutes, I leaned over to him and said, “My sister is here.” I could detect her laughter even in the crowded theater.

HARRIET LISS , 83, STAMFORD, CONN.

An illustration of a person sitting in a large arm chair with a child beside them while they read a book together. A cat is sitting on the floor to the right.

My mother was diagnosed with brain cancer when I was a senior in college. A small group of her friends circled around me. One started a travel fund so that I could visit with my mom on the weekends. Another donated money after college so that I could get grief counseling. Later, when I was in graduate school and working full-time, they organized a monthly breakfast with me. They never uttered a word about their own busy lives or families. They sat and listened, never intrusive, always supportive.

MARY EILEEN CONNERY McDONNELL , 52, GEORGETOWN, MASS.

When I was 13, my mother wrote to me at camp to say we had new “beatnik neighbors.” He was an interior designer, she a fashion photographer’s stylist. I thought they were incredibly chic and glamorous. I was a latchkey kid, so it was very easy to ring their bell after school. I babysat their gorgeous 2-year-old daughter. They took me antiquing. Wilma taught me how to cook, bake and sew while she played Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland records. Then my world collapsed. Wilma had a bout of cancer just before they moved in and suffered a recurrence about two years later. She died just short of her 32nd birthday. I have never gotten over that loss. But I carry her lessons, so she is alive in me.

MADLYN DICKENS , 78, THE BRONX, N.Y.

Her name was Mrs. Dunn — my best friend is her daughter — and she took me under her wing. She taught me that when you can’t get in through the front door, there is always a side door, or a window, to slip into the places you wanted to go. When I was flunking out of high school, she and my guidance counselor had me apply for art school. I got in. Hers was the sofa I landed on when things got messy. Hers was the supportive voice saying, “Oh, Gen!” when I made great strides. Before her Parkinson’s got bad, I was able to tell her, “Your thumbprints are all over every inch of my life and who I’ve become.”

I started working at the grocery store in my college town when I was 18. During that year I also moved into my first apartment, away from the guidance of my mother. Grocery shopping by myself left me confused and overwhelmed. My co-worker, in her 60s, explained some easy meals I could make, placing cans of beans and bags of greens in my shopping cart. That act of kindness touched me. She showed up at my house with Cava and Spanish cheeses the week before I moved to Spain.

ANYA SANCHEZ , 20, BOULDER, COLO.

In the late 1980s, my parents returned to India from where we lived in Toronto. They needed me to get married — I was 21 — so I got to live with my “mami” (my mom’s brother’s wife). She gently cared for me, from the buffalo milk she boiled, cooled and put in a tall glass with chocolate and sugar to the letters she wrote in longhand to prospective suitors every Sunday, when the matrimonial section of The Times of India arrived. When I decided to take a stand and remain single, she cheered me on. And when, 10-plus years later, I met my husband-to-be, he went to Delhi to meet her and get her approval. It’s been eight years since cancer carried her body away, but her spirited reminder — “Be bold, Kitty” — still carries me through life.

 • Improved emotional regulation: Children who experience attachment parenting are more likely to develop better emotional regulation skills, leading to fewer behavior problems and better mental health outcomes.
 • Secure attachment: Attachment parenting fosters a secure attachment between parent and child, leading to better social skills and relationships later in life.
 • Increased parental confidence: Attachment parenting can increase parental confidence, leading to better parenting practices overall.

To implement attachment parenting principles, mothers can:

 • Breastfeed: Breastfeeding provides both nutritional and emotional benefits, fostering a strong attachment between mother and child.
 • Babywearing: Carrying your baby in a sling or carrier can promote bonding and attachment, as well as provide a sense of security and comfort for your child.
 • Co-sleeping: Sleeping in the same room as your baby can promote bonding and attachment, as well as provide convenience for nighttime feedings and care.

Roles and Responsibilities of Mothers in the Family

family

It is often said that mothers are the backbone of the family. This may be true, but it does not mean their roles and responsibilities should be taken for granted. Mothers play an essential role in the family, not only by taking care of the home and children but also by maintaining the traditions and values that make up the family unit.

A mother’s responsibilities vary depending on her family’s needs and culture. In some families, the mother is responsible for all aspects of child care, from birth to adulthood. In others, the father may take on an equal role in child-rearing. Regardless of the family dynamic, certain tasks are typically associated with mothers.

One of the most important roles of a mother is to nurture her children. This involves providing them with emotional support , teaching them values and morals, and helping them to grow into responsible adults. A mother’s love is said to be one of the most powerful emotions in the world. It is a love that is selfless, unconditional and knows no bounds.

A mother’s love for her child can inspire her to do the impossible and help her to overcome any obstacle. This is because a mother’s love is not just a feeling; it is also a force that can change the course of someone’s life. It can give a child the strength to face anything, the courage to pursue their dreams, and the hope to believe in themselves. It is a love that can make all the difference in the world.

Provider of Basic Needs

A mother’s role in her child’s life is far more complex than just that of a provider. In fact, mothers provide the essential foundation upon which their children can grow and develop into independent adults. From the moment a child is born, a mother is responsible for meeting their basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. But that is just the beginning.

A mother also provides emotional support, guidance, and love. They help their children to learn about the world around them and instill values that will last a lifetime. In short, a mother is one of the most important people in a child’s life.

Disciplinarian

While a mother’s love is essential to a child’s development, so is their discipline. It is a mother’s job to teach their children right from wrong and instill in them a sense of responsibility. This includes setting rules and boundaries, providing structure and routine, and enforcing consequences when necessary.

A mother’s discipline is not meant to be harsh or punitive. Rather, it is meant to teach children how to behave in a way that is respectful and considerate of others. It is also a way of helping children to learn self-control and develop a sense of inner discipline.

Portrait of a mother with her daughter planting a plant in park

In addition to being a provider and disciplinarian, a mother is also a caretaker. This means they are responsible for the physical care of their children. This includes tasks such as feeding, bathing, and dressing. It also includes providing them with medical care when necessary.

For example, a mother may take her child to the doctor for routine check-ups or immunizations. Or, she may bring them to the general dentist’s office for cleanings and check-ups.

A mother’s role as a caretaker is vital to a child’s well-being. It is a way of ensuring they are healthy and safe. It is also a way of showing them love and attention.

Last but not least, a mother is also a role model . This means that she sets an example for her children to follow. A mother’s behavior and attitude have a direct impact on her children’s lives.

For example, if a mother is kind and compassionate, her children are likely to be as well. Or, if a mother is dishonest or disrespectful, her children may learn those same behaviors.

A mother’s role as a role model is important because it helps to shape her children’s character. It is an opportunity for her to show them what it means to be a good person. This is one of the most important roles a mother can play in her child’s life.

Mothers play an essential role in the lives of their children. They are responsible for providing them with basic needs, emotional support, and discipline. They are also responsible for being a role model. A mother’s love is powerful and can make all the difference in the world. Thank you, mothers, for everything you do!

Mothers Have an Impact That Goes Far Beyond Their Families

essay on mother's role in family

Emeritus Trustee since 2022

essay on mother's role in family

Key Takeaways

The family is the fundamental building block of our society.

Rather than denigrating the role of motherhood, we should be celebrating it as one of the most noble choices a woman can make.

Strong families remain America’s best anti-poverty, anti-crime, pro-health, pro-prosperity institution, and we have moms to thank for much of that.

With Mother’s Day approaching, it’s a fitting time to talk about the essential role that mothers and the institution of the family play in America’s ability to thrive as a nation. Most mothers may not even realize that their role has an impact that goes far beyond their own families—a role so pivotal to society that it’s truly one of the most significant things they will do in their lives.

That’s not hyperbole, and the research bears it out.

While there’s nothing wrong with singlehood or a life without children, the fact is that the family is the fundamental building block of our society. It’s where new generations are created and meant to be nurtured and taught morals, values and personal responsibility—the things that a society needs from its citizens to flourish.

The strength of our families has a significant impact on each and every American—from the amount of taxes we pay, to the growth of our economy, to the level of crime in our neighborhoods. Years of research has shown that the children of nurturing, intact families are more likely to have higher academic performance and greater emotional maturity as well as more financial stability as adults. They are less likely to commit crimes and abuse drugs and alcohol.

From a societal standpoint, strong families led by nurturing mothers and fathers mean less poverty and dependence on the welfare system, fewer crimes, a healthier and better educated populace, and a stronger economy, among other benefits.

>>> Why the Declining Marriage Rate Affects Everyone

Despite these positive outcomes, the vocation of motherhood has been under attack in America for decades by those who see it as demeaning to women and something that holds them back from achieving their full potential.

One of the most vocal defenders of the dignity of motherhood and the role of the family was conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly .

When many on the far left said that caring for children was demeaning to women, Phyllis would say that the mother who cares for her own children “performs the most socially necessary role in our society. The future of America depends on our next generation being morally, psychologically, intellectually, and physically strong.”

She was absolutely right. Because she wouldn’t back down from defending motherhood as a noble pursuit—countering the left’s narrative that mothers were just “settling” into roles preordained by a male-dominated society—she became a hero to mothers everywhere.

None of this means that women can’t choose having careers over having children. It means that rather than denigrating the role of motherhood, we should be celebrating it as one of the most noble choices a woman can make.

The left saw Phyllis’ defense of marriage and motherhood as a form of misogyny and self-hatred. Why would a woman want to limit herself by chaining herself to a husband and children?

Yet, many of us who are mothers know that family doesn’t limit our potential. Instead, family supports us as we seek to fulfill our highest aspirations, whether those aspirations are motherhood or motherhood and a career.

I’m one such example. I grew up poor in a single-parent home. My mother got on a bus early every morning to go to work to support our family. While I had a wonderful extended family and neighbors who took care of my brothers and me while she was at work, I would have given anything to have had her at home.

That experience affected me deeply, and when I began to pursue a career and thought about having my own children, I knew that I needed to be at home during their early years. The plain fact of the matter is, there is a nurturing and a sense of security that good parenting provides that no day care can equal.

Contrary to the predictions of the left, staying home for each of my children’s formative years took little away from the pursuit of my career. I’ve managed to do everything I could have ever imagined—from serving on the local school board to serving three U.S. presidents. Today, as a proud grandma, I’m the president of one of the most influential think tanks in the world. No one can tell me that being a stay-at-home mom prevents you from having a successful career. It took planning and some sacrifice, but the results were well worth it.

This Sunday, while we’re wishing our mothers and grandmothers a happy Mother’s Day, we also need to acknowledge their unique contribution to society—one that has helped make this nation the envy of the world. Strong families remain America’s best anti-poverty, anti-crime, pro-health, pro-prosperity institution, and we have moms to thank for much of that.

Essay on Importance of Mother in Our Life (1000+ Words)

‘Maa’ or ‘Mom’ is a word that takes every child of the world first from his mouth after coming into this world. Father and mother in this world are those forms of God who see us with no selfishness, teach us, send to school, colleges and always pray to God that our children will not get any irritation and he gets every success in their life.

We cannot expect a life without a mother so we must know the importance of mother. If there were no mother, then we would not have existed in this world. “Maa” is the most natural word in the world, in this name Lord, himself dwells.

Mothers Love Toward

When the newborn arrives in this world, the most disgusting person is the mother of the newborn. She feels like she has got the world’s most prized thing.

Mother is prepared to manage anything for her children. This is not only happening in human beings but in every kind of creature as well. If the trouble is coming to the child, then the mother arrives ahead first.

Mom is most concerned about the future of her children, and anyone does not love more than her mother. Mother loves much more her child, but for knowing that the progeny is strolling on the incorrect route, then she calls him like a guru and interprets it to him, and if needed, then she also puts two hands on them.

There is no one in this world than the mother, and if the mother is not there, then this world is identical to the desert. Mothers should never get hurt.

This word “mother” is precious. Mother is not only the word but the basis of our living. It is tough to live without a mother’s accompaniment. In the morning until we do not hear the mother’s voice, it has not happened in the morning, or today is the Sunday.

This is thinking who is a more significant angle in-between the Mother and God, it falls into the big conscience. So, everyone needs to understand the importance of mother because no one can be as real as her.

Mothers Support For Her Family

Mother always supports together in our good and bad times. For the mother, their children are exact. More than others in her life, she always takes care of and loves us.

She gives us a priority in her life and supports hope in our bad times. The mother, who gets very happy while the child born. She co-operates us in every affair and tries to solve all our problems.

The relationship between mother and children is precious, that never lasts. No, any mother ever reduces her love and upbringing with her children.

“Maa” is the first word for all of us, which we remember in every sorrow and pain first. The name of God also forgets in the person’s pain but never forgets the name of the mother.

Mother is that part of our life without which it is tough to live life. The children’s love may be less for the mother, but the mother’s love never becomes less for her children. In the crisis, even the mother may sleep hungry at night, but she never let it sleeping hungry her children.

The mother remains like this. Mother loves many her children, even if she wore herself old clothes, but she buys new clothes for her children, sleeping in her wet place and let it facilitate sleeping her children in a comfortable place.

It is a matter of dignity to say about mother. They are a very fortunate whose mother is there. Mother always wants to be with her children when the child comes from school; the mother gives them food.

She asks him what happened in the school today and the food ate or not wholly in school. A mother can do anything for her children, like the Lamb (goat’s kid); She dares to fight with the lion and protect her child. This is a common story to understand the importance of a mother.

If the mother becomes angry with the child, then she cannot be patient for a few longs time without speaking with them. Mother keeps an uninterrupted fast for the happiness of her children and takes a full day fast without taking water. It does not know that God is a mother or God comes in the form of a mother in this world to protect us.

Mother’s Day Celebration

Mother’s Day is a day when every child celebrates it specifically for their mothers. It is celebrated annually as a significant event of the year on the second Sunday of May. Nowadays, schools celebrate Mother’s Day in the presence of their children.

Greeting cards, a vivid card, or other unique gifts are given to the mother by their children. On this day, family members go out to taste some delicious and enjoy more. Mothers give some gifts and much love and care to their children.

Their children especially invite mothers to the school where teachers, children, and mothers enjoy celebrating Mother’s Day. Mother and child do some activities to enjoy this day fully. Mothers prepare some special dishes such as macaroni, chow mien, dessert, biscuits, etc. for their children according to their interests.

Mothers also take part in other activities such as dance, singing, speech, etc. The children take part in poetry lessons, conversations, dance, singing, and essay writing, which are related to Mother’s Day. At the end of the festival, mothers serve specially prepared dishes for all students and teachers in the class. All people eat together and enjoy.

Role of Mother in Our Life

Mother’s role is always different in our lives and is priceless to other ones engaged in life. Of course, Mother’s entire day passes to rendezvous our needs. She does not want to return anything from her children. She loves them with an open heart.

Being a progeny, we furthermore love the mother and take care of her. As a dwelling God, in the life of every individual, the mother is the most distinct in the world, who takes all the sorrows of her children and devotes them love and protection.

The child is very proud of whose mother is there. Without a mother, this world looks like a rotten desert. I sometimes think that if you did not have me, then what would have happened to me in this fake world, who was to love me and ask me repeatedly to eat corn.

When someone beat me, then who was to fight with them and kept me in the embrace, caressing me… I love you so much, Maa.

Mother is the person who awakens for them in the bad days and diseases of their children overnight. It involves her in every happiness, and she understands all his/her likes and dislikes.

Maa habitually guides her children to proceed on the right path and motivates them to go on the right way in life. She is our first teacher who provides us with new lessons at every step of life and distinguishes us from the difference between right and wrong.

She always teaches and explains us discipline , behave well, and responsibility and role for the family, society, and country. I hope you like this essay on importance of mother in our life.

Jennifer Knust

Biblical scholar Jennifer Wright Knust addressed the big questions that dominate today's discussions and debates when it comes to sex and the Bible: Is premarital sex a sin? When, and in what contexts, is sexual desire appropriate? With whom can I legitimately have sex? Are same-sex relations permissible? In an era where the phrases, "the Bible says," and "God says," are so often exploited, it is time to consider what the Bible actually does--or does not--say about monogamy, polygamy, homosexuality, gender roles, and sex.

IELTS Essay, topic: the mother’s and father’s role in a family

 • IELTS Essays - Band 5

Boys are most influenced by their fathers and girls are most influenced by their mothers. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons to support your opinion.

It is true that nowadays have a great influence children. Some people hold the opinion that the same sex is the major determination of influencing parent, but others . As far as I am concerned, . My arguments for this point are listed below.

First of all, a father is the person who have already passed ways his son is passing now, in other words, sons are following their father’s footsteps. , based on experience it is easy for a father to notice his sons’ drawbacks and to influence them.

Secondly, it is true that a boy is , a girl is a subtle and fragile one. It is hard for mothers to influence their sons, because it is not likely that can affect a strong one.

In conclusion, it seems to me unfair that boys are most influenced by their mothers. Based on at least two points above I strongly agree that children are influenced by a parent of the same gender.

This essay is too short, 190 words instead of the minimum requirement of 250. It doesn’t say anything about girls being influenced by their mothers, which is also a part of the task – therefore the task is only partially covered. The sentences are not complex enough, there are grammatical mistakes and inaccuracies (see comments underlined in blue). Overall, this looks like a Band 5.5 essay

role of a mother

What is the Role of a Mother in a Modern Family?

The role of a mother in the family has changed a lot over the last few decades. The impressive amount of social change in the last ten years has left many of us wondering how a person a could even define a family, let alone describe the role of a mother.

If we’re going to keep up with the times, we have to at least give thought to the paradigms that are constantly shifting in our lives. We’re going to take a look at how the role of the mother has turned into something different from what it was only a few decades ago.

The New Role of a Mother in the Family

The old world seemed like it was set in stone. Gender roles dominated a lot of the decisions that people got to make, especially women. The structures of society had been molded into barricades that kept individuals in tiny lanes.

The mother used to stay at home and tend to the children while the father worked. Mothers were seen as emotional supporters, destined to cook and clean while dealing with all that comes with parenting children . Fathers had the option to be as involved as they wished to be.

Parenting styles were also predetermined, and stepping slightly out of line in the way you raised your children was strictly frowned upon. Something has changed, and there is a lot to celebrate. If you’re in the position of being a new mother, sites like Kiindred can help you navigate the waters.

What is the Role Now?

It wouldn’t be accurate to say the gender roles of parents have been turned on their head. It’s more like the rules were just lifted, not reversed, and we see a lot of mothers following their dreams, raising their children, being the breadwinners, and kicking a lot of butts.

Where mothers used to be required to do literally all housework, it’s now something that no one is required to do. If anything, husbands should do that because, well, why should mothers?

It seems the absurdity of strict gender roles has been eliminated for a couple of reasons. First, research is growing which shows that gender is a social construct and roles that go along with it needn’t be strictly followed or followed at all.

We are gaining an awareness that all people should have whatever freedom they wish so long as the children are being raised well. Parenting is hard, and the only healthy way to raise great kids is by doing it as a team. When one person slacks, the other has to work harder, and this creates resentment.

We’re seeing an increase in parents working together out of respect. This is really broken the shackles and brought parents to an even plane in many cases, and this is something to celebrate.

Looking for a Community?

When you’re feeling like nobody gets your struggle, take the time to find an online community to relate to. Whether you’re a new mom or your kids have gone off to college, there’s not a reason that you have to feel alone.

The role of a mother is complicated, ever-changing, and challenging. If you’re looking for any great ideas from a great community of women, we’ve got the information you need.

Mother’s role in family and society

Image description

MOTHER is the sweetest word in the world. There is no sweeter and purer word than the word ‘mother’ in any constitution of the world. The word ‘mother’ is very short. But its greatness and scope are infinite.

Our mother is our closest relative in this world. The mother is the person in whose shadow a child spends its life from birth to death. Synonyms of mother cannot be counted. Even the great thinkers of the world say that the most pronounced word in the world is called ‘mother’.

Regardless of the date, World Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year to honour the mothers of the world. The purpose of Mother’s Day is to remind everyone that there is no one else in this world who can truly be true to ourselves except your mother. This day is for showing respect and love to mothers.

In poetic expression: ‘My mother’s sweet smile falls on the face of the moon; I remember my mother; I remember my mother’. Who does not remember the mother? S(h)e who has also remembers, and s(h)e who does not also remembers mother. Such is the relationship between mother and child. ‘Mother’ in just one word evokes a unique example of love, compassion, respect, and sacrifice.

Mother is the safe haven of every child in the world. A mother’s lifetime labour can never be repaid for anything. Whether there should be a special day for mothers can be debated. But on a special day, mothers can be loved a little more.

A review of the history behind Mother’s Day celebrations reveals that Mother’s Day started in 1908. Earlier, Anna Jarvis, a schoolteacher in Philadelphia, United States, was shocked by the family isolation there and thought of creating awareness by celebrating a special day for mothers.

Anna Jarvis died on May 9, 1905, before she could implement that idea. After her death, daughter Anna M Jarvis began working to fulfil her mother’s last wishes. With friends, in 1908, at the church where her mother worshipped in Philadelphia, she started Mother’s Day with an event for all mothers. In 1914, the United States officially declared the second Sunday of May as a public holiday dedicated to mothers.

Mother’s Day is celebrated in more than 37 countries around the world. The second Sunday of May is observed in at least 27 countries, including Bangladesh, Australia, Barbados, the Bahamas, Canada, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, and New Zealand. In addition, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of February in Norway, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Serbia, and other countries on March 8. Mother’s Day is celebrated on March 21 in Middle Eastern countries. Besides, Mother’s Day is celebrated in some countries on other days in May, June, August, October, and November.

White carnation flowers are marked as gifts on Mother’s Day. According to the survey, more people call their mother, buy flowers, and give gifts on this day than any other day of the year. My mother is still alive. A mother living on earth means that the wheel of fortune is always in motion. I therefore consider myself extremely fortunate. Many of my friends lost their mothers at this age. So despite their best wishes, there is no way to celebrate this day for mother. One of my friends said recently, ‘Friend, I remember my mother’s words and memories every day.’ Every day, when he leaves the house, he says to the picture of his mother hanging on the wall, ‘How are you, mother?’ He cries loudly. He understands the pain of losing a mother who does not have one!

But if we look at our current social system, we will see how neglected our mothers are! How many sons, daughters, and daughters-in-law are seen neglecting their mothers? The parents who taught us to walk by holding our fingers, taught us to talk, and gave food to our mouths, when those parents become dependent on their children in old age, the children born in their hands are sending the parents to the ‘old age home’, forgetting about their childhood.

One may use the example of western social values and systems. But the social system is different abroad, and the customs are also different. Social security is also much higher in western countries. Even in Germany, it is normal for elderly parents to go to old age homes or pay their own expenses. They also get government allowances for this, commensurate with their career earnings. But in our country, the social and economic context for ageing parents is different. We address the soil of the country as a mother; we rest our heads at her feet. We feel proud of our country. Yet we do not value our parents, particularly our mother. The cycle of life begins at the moment of birth. Then comes childhood, adolescence, youth, adulthood, old age, and finally the inevitable death. This is the constant truth for everyone. The old age home is not the last shelter of any mother’s life — this is the expectation. So let’s respect mothers and keep away from neglect and disrespect. We can celebrate every day as ‘Mother’s Day’ as long as our mothers are alive and celebrate their lives when they are not with us.

Families are an integral part of society. Families have an important role to play in shaping the cultural and ethical norms of a person’s life. I am also blessed with a beautiful family of six people. It comprises four siblings, mom, and dad. I feel even more blessed to be the eldest daughter in the family as I am now destined to rule over my younger brothers and sisters. Being the eldest daughter I also have some family responsibilities. You can say that my roles in the family are more like second in command and in charge when parents are not around. No matter how good it sounds, my role is more like being a nanny for my younger siblings. In this essay, I will share everything about how I managed to keep everyone happy at the same time.

Essay Sample on My Roles In the Family As a Daughter

Family is the most important and basic unit of society in which each member plays a vital role. Family members work together to raise enthusiastic, productive, law-abiding citizens. Foundation laid by families and communities helps build future generations that define a nation’s fate. I am blessed to have a family of six people. I am the eldest daughter and I have three other siblings, two sisters, and one brother. Being firstborn and second in command, I have various responsibilities towards my family.

Image Source: Vlada Karpovich from Pexels

My Role in the Family

Let’s move on and talk about my role as a member of the family. Being the eldest means taking the role of childcare to some extent. When my parents are focused on shopping, I do not let my siblings be out of my sight. I take care of little household chores. I look after my siblings’ well-being when we play. I make sure my siblings don’t get into trouble when we are home alone. My responsibilities based on my role also include helping my siblings eat breakfast and get ready for school. I also take care of them in the school by helping them against bullies. After returning from school I also help them with their homework and teach them how to play different group games.

Even after all that mother and father scold me the most if something goes wrong. You can now understand that I am more like a nanny for my siblings and a helper for my parents.

Benefits of My Role in The Family

Being the firstborn also comes with a lot of benefits and not just duties. I think my parents love me the most and always agree with what I say. I have mastered the art of manipulating my immediate family members. I like ordering things like, fetch me a glass of water, walk the dogs, attend the main door, etc. I also have the first say on who gets the best toys, who gets the best dresses. Some other benefits include

 • They only get things that I get first
 • No one in my family ever pushed me around.
 • I am a role model for my other siblings and they only do what I do first.
 • With more responsibility, I also had more power over my siblings.

Most importantly, I show them what it means to be a good child. I serve as a role model by being obedient to our parents, teachers, relatives, friends and respectful to the elderly. Likewise, I exhibit the characteristics of a good student. I do my assignments before playing with my toys or doing sports.

I am not saying that I am a perfect older sibling by any means. I also have many flaws including being impatient, being an introvert, and keeping my own company as much as possible. But they never complain about my habits and accept me as I am. This is what families do and my family is always working toward bringing the best in me. I want my family to become the coolest, kindest, loving, and caring. I just love them like they are and this is the reason why I love my family.

200 Words Short Essay on What is Your Role in Your Family As a Son (Short Essay Sample for Children and Kids)

Family is indeed one of the most valuable gifts. Family plays the most crucial role in evolving our lives and helps us become who we are. My family members always stand by my side, good or bad. My parents have four kids. Our family comprises a mother, father, younger sisters, and a younger brother as the final child. We all live under the same roof. All of us have different responsibilities at home in our family and we do enjoy fulfilling them. In this essay, I will talk about my role in my family and how I get along with my parents and siblings. Here I am going to write an essay about the importance of the roles of each member of the family.

Image Source: Vlada Karpovich from Pexels

Now you know that I am the eldest son in the family. Like every other thing, being the firstborn has its own pros and cons. As the eldest son, most of my duties mirror those of my parents. Especially the responsibilities that involve looking after younger siblings and carrying out some household chores. Most of the time when my mother is sleeping after her call canter job, I am in charge of the house. I help siblings with eating breakfast, getting ready for the school bus, and helping them with their homework. I am more like a nanny for my siblings and a little helper for my parents.

I also enjoy giving orders to other family members. I always get every good thing first because my parents listen to me the most and no one pushes me around. My brother is also my best friend. I love my brother, sister, mother, and father the most in this world. I want them to become the coolest and kindest family in the world.

Mother’s Day thoughts from a mom of many

I love being a mom. it’s been the hardest job i’ve ever loved, but also the funniest, the most rewarding, the most soul-searching, soul-stretching, heart-expanding and faith-building part of my life.

essay on mother's role in family

By Holly Richardson

Mother’s Day can be fraught with many emotions for many people. I’m no exception. Some years are really hard, like the Mother’s Days after a child died, or the ones where speakers say their mother never spoke a cross word and I just yelled at my kids trying to get them ready for church on time.

But I also need to say this: I love being a mom. It’s been the hardest job I’ve ever loved, but also the funniest, the most rewarding, the most soul-searching, soul-stretching, heart-expanding and faith-building part of my life.

Being the mother of 25 children makes me stand out. I used to want to “be normal,” to “fit in,” but that changed decades ago when I gave birth to a child with multiple disabilities. Let’s be honest, though. “Normal” is overrated.

I’ve been called crazy more times than I can count. I’ve been told I’m wrong to adopt, especially since I was able to give birth to four children. I’ve been told that becoming a chronic miscarrier and losing dozens of pregnancies was God’s way of telling me that after five children, my family was large enough. I’ve been asked if I know what causes “that,” meaning my kids and I say “Of course! The telephone!” I’ve even been asked if I can remember all their names. Yes, and their birthdays too.

Here’s why none of those things matter. Because no one outside our family got to decide for us what our family should look like. I realized long ago (30 years, but who’s counting) that I did not want to get to the other side of this Earth life and have God ask me why I did not have more children and have to say something like, “My neighbor thought I shouldn’t.”

I’ve wanted to be a mom since I was old enough to nurture and care for baby dolls. In fact, I was quite dismayed when one Christmas I gave one of my “babies” to my little sister, who is seven years younger than me, and she promptly colored all over its face with a permanent marker. I wanted to stay home with my babies, then my toddlers, my preschoolers, my school-aged children, the tweens and teens. And, for the most part, I was able to do so.

Like so, so many women, I’ve been criticized for my choices. As a stay-at-home mom, I was called a “drain on society.” As an elected official, I heard that I didn’t love my family “enough,” or I wouldn’t have gotten involved in politics. It reminds me of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who said, “Do what you feel in your heart to be right — for you’ll be criticized anyway.”

Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke last week at BYU Women’s Conference and talked about prioritizing the two great commandments: Love God and love others. She was a practicing attorney while having and raising her children and shared how she tried to “let God prevail” as she and her husband made decisions about their family.

In the days since her address, social media has been filled with posts by people who were unhappy with her message — and she got it from all sides. Stay-at-home mothers who were upset that she worked outside the home. Working mothers upset that she said she prioritized motherhood. Some who said they were confused at the “mixed messages.”

I loved her talk, though. She said things that I have found for myself, including seeking inspiration in our choices and in the timing of those choices — in spite of what others may say or think, of finding more capacity when we put God first. She said that by letting God author our story, He will take us places we never imagined and that we sometimes do things the world cannot make sense of. Amen, sister.

I love that in my faith, women have long been encouraged to get an education, going all the way back to Brigham Young sending women to medical school. I love that in my faith, we believe in the ability to get answers for ourselves, even when someone else may be in very similar circumstances and get an answer that is different.

I love that there are a gazillion ways to be a good mom and that we can have grace for those who parent differently than we do. You don’t have to share my faith or have any religious beliefs at all to be a good mom. I am grateful, however, to have motherhood to help me turn to God and deepen my relationship. Being desperate for answers is sometimes a good, although painful, catalyst for getting me to my knees in prayer. Sometimes motherhood was and is hard.

I sometimes wish I could have given myself more grace when I was deep in the trenches of parenting and trying to figure out how to juggle food prep, diapers, story time, homework help, laundry, dating advice and spending so many hours in the car that I could count it as a second home. In no way was I a perfect mother (they don’t exist, by the way) but I was doing the best I knew how, with gobs and gobs of love.

When I nearly died a couple of months ago , my thoughts were for my immediate family and not my work colleagues, my besties or even my extended family. Sorry, guys. No, my life did not flash before my eyes, but I desperately did not want to leave my husband a widower or my children motherless. And I got a real dose of humility in realizing that I truly don’t control everything in my life.

Along with President Johnson, I am reminded that Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of my faith and the author and finisher of my story. Being a mother has been one of the very best parts of my story.
