Homework clubs offer a place for your child to work in a supportive environment out of school hours.

Why choose a homework club?

Some children are so self-motivated that they’re able to work diligently on homework and ignore the distractions of normal family life, but not everyone finds it so easy.

Doing homework requires a quiet space to work at home and support from you. If your job or other children make it tricky to provide those things you might want to consider the option of a homework club.

Who runs homework clubs?

Schools and many public libraries offer them, usually after school finishes for the day. Check what’s available with your school and local authority. The biggest advantage of a school-based homework club is that it’s on the same premises, so children don’t have to travel to the club.  Familiarity with teachers is also a plus point, and your child is in an environment where they are already relaxed.

If your child would prefer a change of location at the end of the school day a library homework club might be the answer. They usually run from 4pm to 6.30pm and sometimes for a few hours on a Saturday morning. “We find that children start getting more homework from the age of nine onwards so our clubs are of most benefit for eight to 14-year-olds,” says Lucy Love, manager for children and young people at libraries run by Enfield Council. “Under-eights can come to the club but a parent or carer must be with them.”

What benefits do clubs offer?

“The great thing about library homework clubs are the homework centre assistants – while they don’t do the child’s work, they have the knowledge and experience to guide them to the relevant books or online resources such as encyclopaedias,” explains Lucy. “We encourage children to use online data, as it’s usually the most up-to-date, and can offer equipment such as protractors and SATs papers. Homework clubs are also a great way of helping the child’s transition to secondary school.”

What to do after homework club

• When you get home, ask your child to explain what their homework is – this will show you they have understood it properly themselves.  
• Help your child to settle down and concentrate by making sure there are no distractions around them when they go over their homework with you.  
• Encourage your child to check their work to reinforce the learning they have done.

Tom Hanks is an Aston Villa fan but has laughed off the prospect of following the lead Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney by buying the football club

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have brought celebrity ownership into the spotlight with their success at Wrexham .

The Hollywood duo have guided the Red Dragons back into the Football League during a historic season and have revitalised the Welsh club since their takeover in 2020. It has prompted plenty of questions about other celebrities who could look to do similar.

Acting royalty Tom Hanks is a big fan of Premier League side Aston Villa and became the latest A-lister to be asked about replicating what has happened at Wrexham. But he admitted that the idea of buying his beloved club is completely different to investing in a National League club like Reynolds and McElhenney did.

"I think Wrexham is a little bit different in the economic scale than Aston Villa," Hanks said in an interview with the BBC . "That's a little above my pay grade.”

Whilst a takeover is not on the cards, Hanks remains a semi-regular visitor at Villa Park. He was a special guest during their defeat to Arsenal earlier this season and explained in 2019 on James Corden’s Late Late Show why he ended up becoming a Villa fan after hearing their name on the football scores.

"And I thought ‘Aston Villa’, what a lovely vacation spot! Aston Villa... Its beautiful villa, you throw open the French doors, there’s the beautiful port of Aston down below you,” Hanks told Corden.

"And it turns out it’s in Birmingham. There’s nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with Birmingham. But it’s not a town for the light-hearted, I tell you that. So I’m a dedicated Aston Villa fan since then. I’ve seen them play once, a friendly in the USA, so yes, I support them.”

Meanwhile, Villa have turned to a form of American influence under the guidance of owners NSWE as former Philadelphia 76ers chief Chris Heck joined the club .

According to The Athletic , Heck, who spent nine years with the Sixers before resigning in June 2022, joined Villa’s senior management structure. Villa owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens targetted Heck as part of their managerial overhaul, with the American signing on as the Premier League club's President of Business Operations.

Villanova University graduate Heck spent seven years at the NBA league office as senior vice president of marketing partnerships, and also experience working within football after spending two years as the president of business operations at the New York Red Bulls in the MLS.

Who are the biggest English club never to win a major trophy?

It’s a question beloved of football trivialists and diehard fans alike: who are the biggest club in English football?

Everyone will have their take on it, often shaped by tribal loyalties, but there is another debate, less frequently aired but just as worthwhile: who are the biggest English club never to have won a major trophy? And the week of the 2023-24 FA Cup ’s third round feels as good a time as any to have it.

By a decidedly non-scientific formula comprised of historic league ranking , time spent in the top division and average crowd size , we have narrowed the field down to six (with apologies to followers of Plymouth Argyle, Hull City and Bournemouth ).

A couple of other caveats: we are defining ‘major trophy’ as either the top-flight title, FA Cup, League Cup , Champions League /European Cup and UEFA Cup/ Europa League , and we are only considering clubs currently in existence.

Let the debate begin…

Crystal Palace

Seven minutes.

It sounds so inconsequential, doesn’t it? Not enough time to listen to Purple Rain; just enough time to watch an episode of Bluey. And yet for Palace, seven minutes one Saturday in May 1990 was the difference between an all-consuming ambition realised and a dream dashed.

The clock at Wembley was showing 113 minutes, and a scoreline of Crystal Palace 3-2 Manchester United , when Mark Hughes hooked the ball past Nigel Martyn to ensure the FA Cup final went to a replay. The Palace end, a mass of red and blue balloons before kick-off, deflated in an instant. The replay was lost 1-0 – of course – and while Palace rued the trophy that got away, Alex Ferguson celebrated his first as United manager. Apparently, he went on to win a few more.

The Palace fans present that day may have been surprised that, 33 years later, major silverware has remained elusive for their club. Steve Coppell had assembled a fine team at Selhurst Park back then, one that finished third in the top flight and won the now defunct Full Members’ Cup the following season, inspired by the goals of Ian Wright and a clutch of other England internationals. And even when that side broke up, there have been close calls, including six semi-finals across the two major domestic cups.

Yet for all that, the trophy cabinet has remained bewilderingly bare.

A re-run of that 1990 FA Cup final eight years ago finally promised redemption but proved the same old story of glorious hope snuffed out: local boy and childhood fan Jason Puncheon put Palace ahead in the 78th minute; Juan Mata equalised less than 180 seconds later. United’s Chris Smalling was sent off in the first period of extra time; United’s Jesse Lingard scored a brilliant winner in the second.

Given the roll call of trophy winners in the last 15 years — think Wigan Athletic , Swansea City , Portsmouth and Birmingham City — Palace’s lack of success remains a little bewildering. They have spent almost a quarter of a century in the top flight and have some highly coveted talents in their squad.

It is a record which really needs to be set right.

Major silverware once seemed a distant dream at Fulham. The west-London club spent nine consecutive seasons in the top flight between 1959 and 1968, but aside from that era of Johnny Haynes and George Cohen at Craven Cottage, they mainly traversed the lower divisions.

That has changed in the modern era. Fulham are regarded as Premier League staples and have spent 17 of the past 24 seasons in that division. The catalyst was the arrival of Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, who bought the club in 1997 and bankrolled their return to the top flight in 2001. Despite a tricky decade in the 2010s mainly spent in the Championship under new owner Shahid Khan, the club have now restored their Premier League status having avoided relegation last year.

But a major trophy has remained elusive.

They have gone close twice. In 1975, when Fulham were a second-division side, they reached the FA Cup final under Alec Stock, in which they lost 2-0 to West Ham . More recently, the club went on an incredible run to the Europa League final in 2010 , but Atletico Madrid defeated them after extra time. Diego Forlan scored the winner in the 116th minute, with the scores tied at 1-1.

Those near-misses have entered Fulham folklore because cup runs have otherwise been few and far between. The club have reached the FA Cup semi-finals on five other occasions, in 1908, 1936, 1958, 1962 and 2002. They have also won some ‘second-tier’ trophies in the modern era: namely the second-division title in 2001 and 2022, and an Intertoto Cup in 2002. But a major domestic trophy has felt a long way off. At least until recently.

The summer 2021 appointment of coach Marco Silva, and his subsequent successes, has raised hopes of another famous Fulham cup run.

They reached a quarter-final for the first time since that 2009-10 European campaign when they faced Manchester United in the FA Cup in March, and scored first at Old Trafford, only for their hopes to be dashed during 90 seconds of chaos midway through the second half . This season they have gone one better, making the last four of the League Cup for the first time in the club’s history. They will face Liverpool over two legs later this month to decide who faces Chelsea or Championship side Middlesbrough at Wembley on February 25.

That tie, with both games to be played while Mohamed Salah is away playing for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations and the second leg at Craven Cottage not Anfield, represents Fulham’s best chance of major silverware for more than a decade. And success would secure legendary status for all involved.

Brighton & Hove Albion

There is increasing justification for Brighton to be regarded as the biggest English club never to have won a major domestic or European trophy.

Most of their 122 years in existence have been spent in the lower divisions — which explains that modest average all-time league ranking — but that is changing. They have now been in the top two tiers for 13 seasons in succession, are in their seventh season in a row in the Premier League, are playing in Europe for the first time and are on course for their third top-10 finish on the trot.

The average all-time league attendance of below 13,000 demands context. In the dark days of the 1990s, when they almost dropped out of the fourth division into non-League , they were playing in front of crowds of around 2,000 during two years of ground sharing with Gillingham, 75 miles (120km) from Brighton .

The return home to play at Brighton’s Withdean Stadium — a converted athletics track with a capacity of around 8,000 — dragged on for 12 years before they moved into the new Amex Stadium, where crowds have been regularly around or just above 30,000 in the Premier League.

Their wait for major silverware could end this season. They are through to the last 16 of the Europe League in their continental competition debut, with a realistic chance of going further. They also went close in the FA Cup last season, losing on penalties to Manchester United at Wembley in the semi-finals. En route, they won 1-0 in the last 16 at Championship side Stoke City , who are also their third-round hosts on Saturday.

For clubs of Brighton’s stature, periods of success are cyclical. However, with lifelong fan Tony Bloom at the helm and overseeing a top-quality hierarchy, envied player recruitment with a pathway for young players, the ability to attract top talents such as current Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati and a high-class head coach in Roberto De Zerbi, the indications are that they will not fall away any time soon.

Watford are competitive in this game of top trumps, finishing as runners-up for three major trophies and getting into Europe.

Only 24 clubs have ever won England’s top division, and Watford are in a select group of only eight to have come second without ever finishing top, being beaten only by Bob Paisley’s all-conquering Liverpool side in 1982-83 in their debut top-flight campaign under Graham Taylor. They’d taken the league by storm after three promotions in five seasons from the old fourth division. Luther Blissett’s 27 league goals won him the Golden Boot, but Watford ultimately finished 11 points behind Paisley’s supreme team. Of those eight runners-ups, Watford are one of only three (with Bristol City and Oldham Athletic) to have not won a major trophy at all.

There was another close call 12 months later when Taylor’s side lost 2-0 to Everton in the FA Cup final. They’d competed in Europe that same season for the first and only time, exiting in the third round of the UEFA Cup (today’s Europa League, and a straight knockout competition in those days) to Sparta Prague after beating Kaiserslautern and Levski Sofia.

That initial spell in the top division lasted six years, with Watford finishing in the top 12 every season until relegation in 1988. Only two of the next 27 campaigns were spent in the Premier League — after play-off final wins against Bolton (1999) and Leeds (2006) — which meant dreams of cup success receded.

But another Premier League promotion in 2015 rekindled those hopes, and Watford reached another FA Cup final in 2019, only to run into more all-time great opponents in Manchester City. The 6-0 scoreline was an unwanted record-equalling losing margin in an FA Cup final.

Watford remain one of only three English clubs to be FA Cup runners-up twice without winning it, along with Birmingham (who do have the consolation of a League Cup final victory to their name) and Palace. But for all that, they’ve punched above their weight.

Brentford have enjoyed a historic period of success since Matthew Benham became majority shareholder in June 2012. They have pulled themselves up from mid-table in the third tier then to a ninth-place finish in the top flight last season, missing out on Europa Conference League football by two points. But the one thing that is missing from their cabinet is a major trophy.

Brentford have never played in Europe, and their current form, which has seen them lose seven games out of eight to spiral towards trouble at the foot of the table, means that looks unlikely to change anytime soon. Their best chance of winning a trophy this season is in the FA Cup, but even there, a third-round draw against in-form fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers is hardly ideal.

Coach Thomas Frank’s side have not been any further than the fourth round of that competition in the last four years. However, they did go on an impressive run to the semi-finals of the 2020-21 League Cup, when still a Championship side. They lost 2-0 away against Tottenham Hotspur in a tie reduced to one leg to ease fixture congestion related to the Covid pandemic, and were unlucky Ivan Toney had a potential second-half equaliser disallowed for a tight offside at 1-0.

Brentford have spent the majority of their history playing in the lower leagues and, as their self-deprecating fans never tire of reminding their rivals, have the reputation of being “just a bus stop in Hounslow” (the district of west London they call home). With historically bigger rivals Chelsea and Fulham situated close by, major trophies were always likely to prove elusive — even if the club did have success under Harry Curtis in the 1930s, finishing fifth in 1936.

Winning an overdue trophy in the next few years would be incredible for the fans, take the club’s profile to an even higher level and keep their fairytale going. But it will be a tough ask.

Bristol City

Bristol City?! How did they make the list?

Hey, we’re talking about the 1908-09 FA Cup finalists here, and a club who had finished second in the league two years earlier. Indeed, some might describe that decade as a golden era for City, who have spent a long time punching below their weight.

Bristol, which is accepted on various population/boundary measurements to be the seventh-largest city in England, has never staged a Premier League match (Bristol Rovers, City’s bitter local rivals, are part of that conversation too), and silverware has tended to come in the form of the EFL Trophy, which City have lifted three times (both clubs have lost in the final twice).

The closest City have come to competing for a major trophy since that 1909 final was six years ago, when they reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, defeating four Premier League clubs on the way, including Manchester United, before losing to eventual winners Manchester City 5-3 on aggregate.

Those glory days at the start of the previous century may seem further away than ever — City are 11th in the 24-team Championship, albeit only four points off the play-offs — but at least Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie away to West Ham offers a rare chance to show off the club’s undoubted potential.

Why Nottingham Forest may abandon City Ground ‘masterplan’ for a new stadium

It doesn’t take long in conversation with Tom Cartledge, the Nottingham Forest chairman, to realise that the dispute threatening the future of the City Ground has accelerated the possibilities of a stadium move.

“The club continue to be frustrated,” Cartledge tells  The Athletic in relation to Forest’s standoff with Nottingham City Council, which owns the land where the team play. “Neither the leader of the council, the CEO nor any of the commissioners appointed by central government have reached out to the club.

“Nobody is knocking on the door. Nobody is trying to start the relationship again and say, ‘How do we find a way?’. And in the meantime, other councils and landowners are providing opportunities that we have to consider.”

It is three months since Cartledge spoke to The Athletic about his “masterplan” to upgrade the City Ground into a 40,000-capacity stadium with two new stands bankrolled by the club’s Greek owner, Evangelos Marinakis.

Cartledge showed off the designs. He talked about wanting to create something special and long-lasting at the riverside setting that has been the club’s home for 125 years.

Yet he also accompanied it with a stark warning that the whole project might have to be reconsidered if Forest could not agree terms over a new lease with the council — and that, in a nutshell, is exactly what has happened. Nothing is moving, attitudes have hardened and, as it stands, the entire negotiation is going nowhere fast.

What does all this mean for a stadium regarded as one of the gems of English football?

Well, for starters, the impasse has led to a rethink from Marinakis when it comes to the “corner boxes” of executive suites that were meant to go either side of the Trent End before the end of the season. Work started in February to prepare the ground, including bringing down one of the floodlights and replacing it in a new position.

That, however, has been put on hold. The development would cost up to £7million ($8.7m) and Forest, according to Cartledge, want more clarity from the council “before we spend significant money on capital projects”.

On a wider level, however, Forest’s ongoing dispute with their landlord has left the club contemplating what could, in theory, be one of the most seismic and important decisions in their history.

When Cartledge uses the word “opportunities” he is talking about possible sites where Forest can explore a Plan B — putting up a 50,000-capacity stadium in another part of the city. One area that has been discussed is Toton, six miles south west of the city centre.

The Athletic has been to see the relevant site, earmarked originally for the now-abandoned HS2 railway project. It is land owned by Nottinghamshire County Council. In the coming weeks and months, we can expect more and more discussion about the pros and cons of staying at the City Ground or building something new elsewhere.

“That (Toton) is one of several potential spots,” says Cartledge. “It’s not as easy as to say, ‘Here’s a piece of land, go and build a stadium’. There are highways, transport and connectivity issues. But it’s fair to say we are progressing due diligence on different sites.”

Through the estate, past the Toton Fish Bar, a hairdresser’s called Flicks and some typical Nottingham suburbia, you will eventually come to a mini-roundabout on Epsom Road where you can hear the hum of industry from the railway sidings on the other side of the trees.

The River Erewash is nearby, running along the county border between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. There is a Tesco supermarket on the other side of Stapleford Lane, a tram stop and a garden centre, Bardills, that has its own history with the city’s major football club.

In 1898, when Forest moved to the City Ground, the nurseryman and landscape gardener William Bardill was on their committee. Bardill was put in charge of the playing surface and is credited in the club’s official history book for creating a pitch “that was soon recognised as one of the best, even the finest, in the country”.

Today, Bardills looks out on the stretch of dual-carriageway that is named after Brian Clough, Forest’s two-time European Cup-winning manager, and leads all the way from Nottingham to Derby.

And, yes, it feels strange — very strange, indeed — to look down at Toton Sidings from the grassy embankment off Banks Road and try to imagine what it would be like with a gleaming new stadium dominating the skyline and a different set of match-day routines.

OK, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. For now, it is only an idea. That idea is in its embryonic stages and, before anything, Forest are acutely aware they need to undertake a long period of consultation with fans, understanding the sensitivities and why many supporters might find it unsettling.

These are always emotive subjects. Some fans might be receptive to a move, others will hate the idea.

Cartledge, in particular, is aware of local feeling, given that he grew up in Nottinghamshire and has been going to matches at the City Ground since the early 1980s. It is all he has ever known and if you want to know why the former manager, Steve Cooper, used to say it “oozed football soul”, there is a 4,000-word love letter here courtesy of one of its biggest admirers.

Critically, though, the issues with the council come at a time when Forest — deducted four points this season for breaking the Premier League ’s profitability and sustainability rules — feel the only realistic way to challenge the elite teams is to generate more revenue.

Uppermost in Forest’s mind is finding a way to do this on non-matchdays — something that has been missing from their ground for many years — and accommodating the thousands of fans who cannot get tickets. Forest reckon they could have sold 50,000 for some games since their return to the top division.

Against that backdrop, Forest’s decision-makers are open about the fact they have to consider every option and, to quote Cartledge, there is “a discussion to be had about, ‘Yes, the City Ground is our home, but just imagine if we did something amazing.'”

On top of that, the club have been re-evaluating everything since negotiations fell through recently over a multi-million-pound deal to buy land off the eastbound A52 for a new training ground.

Unreported until now, the deal is off because of what Cartledge describes as “a financial disparity between what we believe the land is worth and what the land-owners are asking”. And that is disappointing when Forest’s hierarchy had drawn up some exciting plans and fully expected it to go through in February. The club readily admit their training ground is not big enough.

So what next? Forest, it transpires, have already started looking elsewhere. The relevant people are wondering whether they should think more ambitiously and take their lead from Manchester City , the reigning Premier League champions.

“Because of the noise being created out of the disruption of whether we stay or go, we are getting quite a lot of interesting things put our way,” Cartledge explains.

“The terms on that (training ground) project are prohibiting us, but other things have come forward that have given us time to think. Where do we want to be? Where are those campuses where we can try to put all of this together in the way Manchester City have done?”

City are the only club in the Premier League who have a stadium and training ground on the same complex — and this is one of the ideas Forest think is worth exploring at a time when Marinakis has set aside a huge pot of money for development.

“Mr Marinakis is incredibly ambitious,” says Cartledge. “If we did something with those two things together — the training ground and the stadium — you do that only once. When it comes to these big decisions, he takes an enormous amount of pride and responsibility in getting it right.”

Another area of interest to Forest recently can be located on the other side of Meadow Lane, Notts County’s stadium, on a large expanse of industrial land where there is an incinerator plant and a waste-collection unit.

It is on the other side of the Nottingham Canal from the Hooters bar, a short walk from the city’s railway station.

That idea has not progressed, however, because the land is permitted only for industrial use. The city council has indicated there is no scope for that to change. That, in turn, explains why Forest have been looking at the suburbs. At least four sites have been discussed, Toton in particular.

Those talks will continue even if Forest, 17th in the Premier League table, drop into the relegation places — but there have to be some awkward questions, too, about how the dispute with the council was ever allowed to reach this stage.

In 2019, Forest announced, via a blaze of publicity, that they had been granted a new 250-year lease. Nicholas Randall, then the chairman, said he was “delighted” to secure the future of the club’s home ground. Yet, for reasons unexplained, Randall did not follow that up by telling the club’s supporters the agreement was never, in fact, completed.

In reality, Forest have continued operating by the terms of their old lease, which has 33 years to run and, before starting a major redevelopment at huge expense, the club need the securities and insurance of a much longer agreement.

“The rent, if you add it up for the next 33 years, comes to about £9.5million,” says Cartledge, who replaced Randall as chairman in August. “The proposed rent the council wants us to pay over 250 years is more than £250m.

“So if we are talking openly about the Football Association’s desire for financial stability and the future of clubs to be secure, it is simply wrong for us to sign up and put this club in a position where we have to pay £250million in rent to stay here.”

Supporters of a certain generation might recall this is not the first time that relations between the club and landlord have been fractious because of their lease agreement.

In 1991, the council proposed Forest’s annual rent went up from £750, as agreed in 1963, to £150,000. In the end, the two sides compromised at £22,000. Clough threatened to quit if the council got its way with a proposal for Forest and Notts to share a ‘super stadium’ on the old Wilford power station.

This time, however, the issue is complicated by the Labour-run council issuing a Section 114 notice in November to declare itself, in effect, bankrupt, meaning the government has sent in commissioners to take control.

The council says it has “a statutory duty to ensure best value for taxpayers”. Forest, however, say it is exorbitant that the current rent is £250,000 and the council allegedly wants almost four times that amount.

Cartledge says he has not had a response to “a very strong letter” he has written to the council to argue that the proposed terms are unreasonable.

Four local MPs — three Labour and one Conservative — have tried to apply pressure on Forest’s behalf but they have found out, Cartledge says, that “the council’s predicament is very challenging and it’s hard for politicians to become involved now the commissioners are running it”.

David Mellen, the council’s recently departed leader, has said Forest cannot expect “mates’ rates”. However, the club’s frustrations stem, in part, from the absence of any real dialogue to find a compromise.

“We had dialogues with some of the junior officers, but nobody senior came forward,” says Cartledge. “That’s important context for the fans to understand. We are not just sitting here in a black hole waiting and hoping. We are trying to be proactive.”

The Athletic contacted Nottingham City Council for comment.

One of the reasons Cartledge was appointed by Forest is that he is the chief executive of Handley House Group, the parent company for four international businesses specialising in design and architecture. One of those is the Nottinghamshire-based Benoy, which has designed the plans for a new-look City Ground and would also be prominently involved in any stadium move.

In the meantime, word has got back to Forest’s hierarchy that the Jockey Club, owners of Nottingham racecourse, had a lease dispute of its own with the council and it lasted seven years. So how long do the club wait when Marinakis is impatient, as well as ambitious, and many fans feel frustrated that not a brick has gone down since the initial stadium development was announced five years ago?

All that can really be said for certain is that safe-standing areas will be installed at the City Ground over the summer and the roof will be solar-panelled as part of a new agreement with E.ON to be the club’s sustainability partner.

“Across all of our projects – new ground, existing ground, training ground; whatever we pursue – the owner is absolutely adamant the club should start to look to a future whereby we have no carbon footprint,” says Cartledge.

“Regardless of whether we are staying or going, the owner feels it is important for the goodness and wellbeing of the world. He won’t let the council delays stop us from doing what is right.

“We will work together on solar panelling and other energy-saving initiatives. And, critically, if the progress on other sites and discussions about where we want to go mean it is right to move, E.ON will form part of the team, looking at how a new stadium could be built off-grid and carbon-neutral.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
