Unacademy started out as a YouTube channel in the year 2010. Five years later, it was developed into an online portal for educators and new-age learners. This was achieved with the combined effort of 4 co-founders- Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, Roman Saini and Sachin Gupta.

Unacademy was started as a YouTube Channel by Gaurav Munjal just for the sake of exploring a new hobby. During those days, Munjal , who was pursuing engineering, gave co ding lessons in Java through his channel. The channel was a hit and Munjal also became one of the most followed people on question-and-answer website Quora, where he extensively wrote answers to questions on computer science.

In 2015, with the help of the other co-founders mentioned above, Munjal registered Unacademy as a brand under the parent firm Sorting Hat Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The p ortal o ffered free classes during the first 3 years of its operation and started a subscription model only in 2019.

Unacademy offers a wide variety of courses developed by more than 18,000 teachers. The course curriculum covers the syllabus of classes 10+2 and other competition exams such as JEE, NEET, UPSC, SSC, Bank PO, CAT, GATE , etc.

The platform offers the courses in the form of both live classes and pre-recorded videos. Every fourth class of the week is dedicated to addressing students’ doubts. Interestingly, Unacademy is now offering classes in pastry-making and chess as well.

Unacademy is now a part of the prestigious Unicorn club, which means that the company has surpassed the valuation of $1 billion. In fact, it was Gaurav Munjal’s dream to achieve this milestone before turning 30. Notably, the company became a unicorn club member just 6 days before his 30 th birthday .

Let’s take a look at the various funding rounds that have taken place so far:

  • January 2017 : Raised $4.5 million in a funding round led by Blume Ventures and Nexus Venture Partners .
  • September 2017 : Raised $11.5 million in Series B funding led by Sequoia India and SAIF Partners .
  • July 2018 : Raised a combined $21 million from Sequoia India, SAIF Partners and NEXUS Investment Partners.
  • February 2020 : Raised a combined $110 million from Facebook, Blume Ventures, Nexus Ventures, Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, and private equity company General Atlantic.
  • September 2020 : Raised $150 million through Soft B ank Group led funding which saw all existing investors participate
  • November 2020 : Raised an undisclosed amount from Tiger Global and surpassed the valuation of $2 million.

As part of its aggressive marketing strategy, Unacademy makes extensive use of digital marketing (Google, Social Media and OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.), TV commercials, Radio, and out-of-home (OOH) advertising methods such as billboards.

While digital marketing and OTT platforms are the top revenue generators in tier-1 cities, TV and OOH methods of promotion bring in more leads in smaller towns. The company doesn’t like to spend much on newspaper ads.

Unacademy follows a freemium business model . In simple t erms, Unacademy offers some of its basic services for free and charges a subscription-fee for its high-quality content. The pre-recorded classes are free of cost; while, the live, interactive sess ions with top experts are paid.

  • Acquired Delhi-NCR based Neostencil , a startup dedicated to government- exam preparation, in December

The first complete month of nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus turned out to be a huge success for all online learning platf orms. Unacademy too was no exception . Here are a few Unacademy stats from the month of April, 2020:

  • 82% growth in revenue from the preceding month (March)
  • The highest ever views on YouTube- 165 million
  • 1,20,000 live classes conducted
  • 2,64,000 tests were taken up by learners ( 247% higher than March)

Famous personalities Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma and Shashi Tharoor participated in live classes. These sessions were watched live by more than 50,000 learners

In May 2020 when Unacademy was riding high on its overnight gains, it also had to bear the consequences of a vicious cyber attack. As many as 11 million user accounts were compromised, the information of which was later allegedly sold on dark web. In an official statement, Unacademy confirmed the breach , while also asserting that no sensiti ve information was compromised.

Reportedly, the attackers claimed on dark web that they had access to the entire Unacademy database, but they decided to leak only the user data at the moment.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar signed a multi-layer deal with Unacademy in February of 2021. The former cricketer will serve as the brand ambassador for the platform and also offer interactive master classes. Notably, Sachin has also picked u p a small stake in the company.

The war among major Indian online learning platforms is getting intense with each passing day. Most of this is because of the fact that students are restricted to their homes and can’t step out safely owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gaurav Munjal , the CEO of Unacademy , sold his first company FlatChat, to CommonFloor in 2014, and is currently developing Unacademy. A St. Xavier's Jaipur student, Munjal has a Btech in Computer Engineering from NMIMS, Mumbai. After a brief internship at Directi, Munjal founded Unacademy, as a Youtube channel providing easy, study-related videos for the students. However, he left the same and joined Directi as a Software Developer, where he remained for a little more than a year before founding FlatChat. He served as the FlatChat Founder and CEO but after the same had been acquired by CommonFloor. Munjal started revamping Unacademy from the scratch and developed it into the company we see now.

Roman Saini , who is a doctor from AIIMS, cleared the Civil Service Exam (IAS) in 2013. He quit his administrative roles and is now the Co-founder and Chief Educator of Unacademy.

Unacademy is now valued at $3.44 Billion , after the recent fundraising round, Series H, led by Temasek, Softbank, Tiger Global , and others on August 1, 2021, where the company has raised $440 million .

Initially, Unacademy raised a seed funding of $500K from Blume Ventures in May 2016. The latest funding was raised on August 1, 2021.

Unacademy - Acquisitions

Facebook-based Unacademy has acquired 12 startups to date to strengthen its position in the Edtech Sector. The last of the acquisitions was Swiflearn, which was acquired by Unacademy on November 3, 2021 . The company previously acquired the Edtech Saas platform Spayee, which was acquired by Unacademy-backed Graphy on October 11, 2021.

Unacademy was in talks since October 18, 2021, to acquire Swiflearn, a Gurugram-based full-stack online platform for academic courses that aims to provide a personalized learning experience for the students. Founded by Abhinav Agarwal and Anand Bakode, Swiflearn currently focuses on the K-10 segment and extends free and subscription-based classes for the students. The acquisition deal was then in its latter stages and was estimated to be worth around $15-20 million. Finally, the acquisition happened on 3rd November and is in line with the company's strategies to cement its position in the K-12 category. However, the deal amount is still undisclosed. The acquisition of CodeChef was one of the major acquisitions of Unacademy, which delighted both Gaurav Munjal and Bhavin Turakhia.

Unacademy - ESOPs

Unacademy has announced the expansion of its ESOP pool by 19.8%. The Unacademy ESOP pool will now consist of 286 mn options from the earlier announced 238.7 mn options. As per reports dated July 9, 2022, each option of Unacademy is priced at Rs 109, meaning that the total size of the ESOP pool would be worth around Rs 3,118 crore ($393 mn) as of November, 2022.

The edtech giant had earlier expanded its ESOP size from 99K to 238 mn, which is a 2401X jump on April 20, 2022.

Unacademy had already announced its ESOP buyback plan on September 4, 2021, the company further reassured that it would be the company's largest employee stock ownership plan for the team members and educators of the platform.

Co-founder Roman Saini mentioned that this ESOPs buyback will be the third and largest by the online learning platform. Furthermore, he also thanked the employees of Unacademy because of their belief in the company's “vision of democratizing education”. He also added that Unacademy is also announcing the Teacher Stock Options (TSOPs) for its educators, who will be eligible for fully vested Stock Grants after they complete 3, 4, and 5 years with Unacademy.

Munjal further disclosed that the company currently has 50,000+  registered educators as of August, 2023, who are eligible for the grant, which they will get immediately.

Relevel has witnessed 64+ companies to date on its platform across sectors, which have interviewed the candidates on the basis of the tests. Frontend Development, Backend Development, and Business Development are the 3 tests that Relevel conducts for job seekers as of now. These 3 tests are diverse in nature ranging from MCQs, algorithmic tests, and case studies and are conducted within a day. Sometimes, the Relevel tests include the building of a mini-app followed by a final round of interviews with an industry expert. Shashank Murali, the founder of the recruitment platform, currently heads it, as the CEO of Relevel. The platform successfully raised $20 mn from Unacademy on October 1, 2021. Unacademy has faced numerous challenges since its existence as an ed-tech company in India. The most prominent challenge that it faces is tough competition from the other edtech companies thriving in India.

Unacademy Layoffs

The ed-tech major has reportedly laid off around 1K of its workforce in the past weeks, according to the reports dated April 7, 2022. The Unacademy employees who were asked to leave include on-roll staff and contractual educators. As far as the reports go, around 600 of these employees were asked to resign throughout the last week of March 2022. This massive downsizing initiative was most likely fuelled by the impending slowdown of the venture funding, and unstable economic conditions and further propelled by an urge to bring down the overall cash burn of the company, according to sources.

Unacademy has laid off again, where around 150 employees were asked to resign in the last 2 days, as per the reports dated June 17, 2022. The laid-off employees belong to the sales and operations verticals and are primarily from Unacademy are from Unacademy Group's core business - Unacademy and PrepLadder. The edtech unicorn justified that it laid off these employees sighting poor performance. Improving efficiency has been declared as the sole aim of the company for becoming profitable.

Unacademy Suspended Contracts of Educators

After firing over 1K employees in 2022, Unacademy has allegedly suspended the contracts of its NEET and JEE doubt-solving educators for 6 months, as per reports dated August 2, 2022. The Munjal-led company terminated the mentioned contracts on July 31, 2022, and that too with no notice period. Numerous contractors were affected by this, the numbers of which are yet not confirmed by the Moneycontrol report, which reported the same. The educators were terminated by Unacademy for a period of a minimum of 6 months, where Unacademy would neither use their services nor pay them during this period. Unacademy has allegedly stated that it is strategising something new, which would eventually reduce the requirement of doubt-solving platforms.  

Unacademy owned software as a service company Graphy has laid off employees According to several people aware of the development, Graphy has let go of 20–30% of its workers, or about 50 employees, in the last few weeks as per various news report of october, 26, 2023.

Unacademy Shutdowns

Unacademy launched USMLE in February 2022, which was designed to serve as a paid subscription program, a global test preparation platform that will help an MD (Doctor of Medicine) to clear the US medical licensing examination in the US, has been shut down. The platform was winded down because it has failed to achieve the PMF (Profitability Mass Function). The USMLE platform had somewhere between 15-20 employees, who would be likely absorbed by Unacademy.

Unacademy also disclosed that it would be closing some of its business verticals that had failed to find a product-market fit, as per reports dated July 18, 2022.  

Unacademy vs Allen Career Institute

Unacademy had set it up against Allen Career while expanding in Kota. Situations became so tense that Unacademy has to offer police protection for some of its teachers who switched from Allen Career to Unacademy, as per the reports dated June 10, 2022. The Rajesh Maheshwari-founded Allen Career was founded back in 1988, and has enjoyed quite a dominance in the coaching industry that thrives in Kota, Rajasthan.

The issue began when Unacademy started expanding its reach in the offline education space, and in this way, it turned to Allen Career and its teachers and began to hire them against huge compensations. Even the man behind the launch of Allen Career Institute’s Jaipur centre, Ashish Arora also joined Unacademy in February 2022. Gaurav Munjal had previously asked people in Unacademy to hire the best teachers and this plan seemed to have backfired. This has also enraged Allen Career Institute Chairman and Director in Academics Brajesh Maheshwari, who has posted a video warning the teachers from switching to other edtech companies. In this video, Maheshwari also referred to the teachers as 'greedy' and claimed that Allen Career has a workforce of over 11000 employees and that it would not matter much if some of them leave the company. Besides, the teachers who would prefer to join other companies would also be blacklisted from the Allen Group and its partners, and would never be able to join the same group or its partners again in the future.

As per June 14, 2022 reports, Unacademy has listed 30 educators who have joined the company and were previously aligned with Allen Career, in answer to the previous warning from the Allen Director.

The edtech battle between Unacademy and Allen has taken a whole new, dramatic turn. The Rajasthan-based coaching institute has reportedly filed a plea against 20 of its former teachers in Jaipur Commercial court under Section 9 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, as per the reports dated July 7, 2022. Allen alleged that the teachers did not serve the 4-month notice period as per the service agreement, thereby not completing their service tenure and breaching the service agreement as a result. It has been reported that Allen filed around 20 pleas in the last week of June 2022, which stated that the sudden resignation of the teachers has led to students abandoning the institute in the middle of the session when crucial examinations are upcoming. The plea also revealed that Allen has also taken disciplinary action against the teachers due to their “illegal and unauthorized absence from the institute”.

Anyway, let’s get into the case study!

So I recently joined Unacademy as a Product Designer. And in my first week, I was given the task to work on the redesigning the search experience on the web.

Before we get started let me give you a quick introduction to what Unacademy is. Unacademy is an ed-tech startup based in Bangalore, India. We are proud to be India’s largest learning platform. We bring star educators together with millions of students in need of quality education. The network of registered educators and learners has steadily grown in the last two years. Powered by a young & dynamic team, Unacademy is on its path to an education revolution.

Alright, so now let’s get into the main part of the article — Redesigning Search on Web. The first search design was designed 2 years back when the company has just launched. Since then the only focus of the company was to bring in new features and improve the mobile experience. The focus was not much on the web as a majority of our target learners use our mobile app rather than the website. And so, we thought that it was time to redesign the search experience on the web to make it much better and easier to use.

There are quite a few reasons that we decided to redesign the search on the web. The main reason would be to align it with the search on the app. As I mentioned earlier we were focusing a lot on the app and not the web. As a result, search on the web was missing out on a lot of things. Elements like filters, auto-suggest, and recent and popular search terms. Also, the search results page had an outdated visual look.

Design Process

We started off by splitting the search functionality into 2 parts.

  • Before search (the part until the learner taps on the enter/return key)
  • After search (the search results page)

And for those you who are wondering what design tool we use, we use FIGMA . Why Figma? Its simple, FIGMA ROCKS!

Before search

Search is primarily used in 2 situations. Either when a learner is unable to find something or when they want to find something very specific. Good UX comes into the picture when the learner is assisted while they are searching. Just having a good looking search bar won’t do the trick.

So the first thing that we decided to put in place was to show the Recent and Popular search terms. We wanted to show around 15 results to the learner when they click on the search bar but has not typed anything yet. I came up with a simple 2 column layout for this. I did not use a single column layout as 15 items in a single column would take up a lot of real estate on the screen. But what if the search suggestion is too long? Well, it is highly unlikely for it to be very long. But just to be on the safer side I gave a lot of room in both the columns. If we still did end up showing a very long suggestion, we would truncate it.

The next one on the list was to provide suggested search terms while the learner is typing, just like on google. For this, a 2 column layout would not make sense and so I went back to a single column layout. When the learner is typing the search term, they would be shown a few recommended search results. They would also be shown and a few autocomplete search terms as well. This will definitely save him the trouble of typing a lot and they can search faster. We would not be showing any courses/lessons but only be showing the goals (exams) and educators.

After search

This is where a lot of thinking, brainstorming, and iterations took place. And I must say that it was very interesting. Let me quickly show you the old and the new design before I dig deeper into the design decisions that we took.

Tab vs Non-Tab layout

Here are a few reasons we wanted to get rid of the tabs.

Every time a learner searched for something, the system would have to load up the content on the other tabs no matter what. This is an unnecessary effort by the system.

Since we decided to bring in filters, there was no need for having tabs. Learners could easily filter instead of navigating between tabs.

We also wanted to show lessons and courses in one single list. In the old design, the learner had to go to another tab to search for lessons. The Engineering team had built the algorithm to show popular courses and lessons together in one list. This algorithm was being used only on the app and not on the web. Hence, we wanted to apply this to the website as well. But, what if the learner wanted to search for only lessons? In that case, the learner would have to apply a filter. This removed the need for having a separate tab for Lessons. But what about educators?

Our data showed that a very small percentage of learners clicked on the educator’s tab. So, we decided to include a few educators profile right on the results page, removing the need for a separate tab.

Overall page layout

Things that we had to lay out on the page were the search bar, educators, topics and search results. We also had to bring in filters and related searches which were not there in the existing design

  • I decided to keep the search bar right at a fixed place in the nav bar at all times and place the filters right below the search bar. It would be super easy to access the filters with the least cursor movement. And also if we had to bring in more filters in the future, it would not disrupt the layout at all. (The design shown above is a tiny bit different than the one in the Dribbble Shot. We had to make a few last minute changes to it.)
  • The old design had a grid view. But we decided to switch to a list view because of one simple reason. The emphasis needs to be on the text rather than the thumbnail. The learner clicks on a search result based on the text and not the image. I also placed the Popular and Recent Filter right beside the heading and not as a separate filter.
  • I now had to decide on how I would place educators, search results and topics in the screen. Which is more important? Should I remove any of them? How many items do I have to keep for each category? These were all the questions that I had to figure out. The best way was to use data. Here were the findings.

A majority of the learners clicked on courses. The least was topics. And so, I placed the topics section on the right side so that it would not compete with the more important content.

We also had data to show that the majority of the learners tapped on the first 2 educator profiles. And so, we found it sensible to have only 2 educators instead of showing a full-fledged list. If the learner wanted to see all the educators, they could click on the See All button. They would then taken to a different page.

4. And finally, do we keep the existing infinite scroll or have pagination? There was only one problem with an infinite scroll. When scrolling there would be chances that a learner could miss out on a few courses. And that may be what they would have been searching for. But that would not happen in case of pagination.

In the end, it was a good great learning experience. There were so many discussions and rounds of iterations. Learned a lot of new stuff at every stage of the process. Since this was my first project, I got a really good insight with regard to the design and review process followed at Unacademy. I also got a good understanding of working with Unacademy’s Design System as I worked on designing the UI.
