Project Summary: The objective was to automate a monthly Excel scorecard used by staff and executives at Ace Intermountain Recycling. The project team delivered a scorecard that was easily accessible via a web browser displaying the information and metrics that were originally calculated manually. The new scorecard can be accessed at any time, is continuously updated, and easy for management to maintain.

Sponsoring Company Background:  Ace Intermountain Recycling Center (AIRC) operates transfer stations for recycled materials, green waste, and other garbage in the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding areas. The AIRC scorecard built by this project accumulates different metrics, allowing management to easily view revenue, costs, and other productivity trends.

Capstone are senior-level project courses that allow you to solve a substantial problem with knowledge gained from many areas in computer science and engineering. Students work in teams to define a problem, develop a solution, produce and demonstrate an artifact that solves the problem, and present their work. Class time focuses on the project design and implementation, but it may also include lectures on the practical application of advanced topics. Interdisciplinary projects that require interaction with other departments are encouraged.

A Capstone course is not simply an advanced course in a particular sub-area, nor is it an unstructured project course. A Capstone is designed to be a culmination of your learning, and a chance to develop and express many skills at once: For example, technical expertise and communication ability.

Capstone Goals

  • Projects must be large enough to require teams of several students to work on over one quarter.
  • Students must apply concepts from more than one sub-area of CSE (at the 300-level and above).
  • The work must involve a substantial design effort.
  • Students must present their work using formal oral presentations and written reports.
  • Efforts must culminate in an interesting, working artifact.

  • Description: Capstone design experience. Prototype a substantial project mixing hardware, software, and communications. Focuses on embedded processors, programmable logic devices, and emerging platforms for the development of digital systems. Provides a comprehensive experience in specification, design, and management of contemporary embedded systems.

  • Description: This Data Science Capstone focuses on the complete end-to-end process of data analysis performed with code: the iterative, and often exploratory, steps that analysts go through to turn data into results. Our focus is not limited to statistical modeling or machine learning, but rather the complete process, including transformation, exploration, modeling, and evaluation choices. Students will work in groups of four on a single project that will tie together and apply previous experiences from CSE 312, 332, 446, 442, 344, and other classes. Students are expected to already possess knowledge of appropriate machine learning, visualization and database methods, and will focus on independently applying those methods in the context of your project. There will therefore be limited lecture material in this course. Course staff will instead work closely with students to critique and advise on their group project. Students will experience the end-to-end data analysis process from transformation and exploration of data to modeling and evaluation. Your group will brainstorm on a project during the first week, before collaboratively exploring the data and implementing a complete data analysis workflow.   • Description: In this capstone course, students will work in groups to apply software engineering and system design skills they have learned over their four years in computer science towards building a novel social computing system to address a social challenge. We will follow a human-centered design process for groups to ideate, prototype, test, implement, and showcase their novel system. Along the way, students will gain a broad understanding of the current major pressing issues and state of the art of knowledge in social computing, while taking a critical lens toward social computing systems they use every day. Along with the capstone project, we will have readings, group discussions, reflections, and guest speakers working in social computing.

  • Description: The main goal of this course is to open up new career options in robotics for computer science and engineering students. To that end, the course will teach you the basics of robotics and give you implementation experience. You will learn to use libraries and tools within the most popular robot programming framework ROS (Robot Operating System). We will touch on robot motion, navigation, perception, planning, and interaction through mini-lectures, labs, and assignments, eventually integrating these components to create autonomous or semi-autonomous robotic functionalities. The project will give you team-work experience with large scale software integration and it will get you thinking about opportunities for using robots to address societal challenges.

  • Description: Designs and implements a software tool or software analysis for an important problem in computational molecular biology.

Description: Student teams will be tasked with creating a computer security themed product. The work will progress from product conception to requirements to design to implementation to evaluation. Along the way, students will incorporate key computer security tools and practices, including threat modeling, penetration testing, and bug fixing. Examples include password managers, censorship resistance systems, and mobile payment systems.

  • Description: Virtual and Augmented reality are promising technologies that are certain to make an impact on the future of business and entertainment. In this capstone, students will work in small project teams to build applications and prototype systems using state of the art Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Seattle is a nexus of VR tech, with Oculus Research, Valve, Microsoft (hololens), Google (cardboard, jump), and teams in the area. We will be developing on the latest VR/AR headsets and platforms, and will bring in leading VR experts for lectures and to supervise student projects. Students will experience the end-to-end product cycle from design to deployment, and learn about VR/AR technology and applications. The capstone culminates in a highly anticipated demo day where the students demonstrate their creations to other students, faculty and industry luminaries. (See Video)

  • Description: This class will provide students with an intensive 10-week experience in successfully completing a challenging, well-scoped research project. Participants will work in small groups (approximately 3 people in each group) to hone their technical skills to quickly absorb and adapt new technical knowledge, gain experience in complex programming, perform thorough experiments and analysis, and learn how to find a path when faced with negative results.

  • Description: This course is intended to give students a thorough understanding of design and implementation issues for modern operating systems. We will cover key design issues in implementing an operating system, such as memory management, inter-core synchronization, scheduling, protection, inter-process communication, device drivers, and file systems, paying particular attention to system designs that differ from the traditional monolithic arrangements of Unix/Linux and Windows.

Description: Accessibility is quickly emerging as a leading consideration for product design and engineering. Disability is part of the human condition – almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life, and those who survive to old age will experience increasing difficulties. Disability is complex and heterogeneous, and the technological interventions to accommodate different abilities are wide ranging and vary with context. Many familiar technologies like voice recognition, text-to-speech, and gaze detection were initially engineered to assist people with disabilities gain more access and increase participation in daily life. Students will work in interdisciplinary project teams that include community members with expertise on project needs. Groups will follow participatory design practices and apply design and engineering skills to create technology solutions that increase independence and improve quality of life for people of all abilities.   • Description : Algorithms that deal with text or speech, either as inputs as outputs, are increasingly part of our everyday lives.  Systems that translate accurately between languages, read many documents and summarize or answer questions about them, and even hold conversations with us, are on the horizon. Successfully designing and implementing such systems requires understanding and integration of ideas from linguistics, statistics, and computation, and testing them rigorously requires a strong grasp of experimental methodology.  This capstone course gives hands-on experience with selecting a natural language processing problem and with crafting and evaluating a solution.

Visual mapping, as a capstone planning tool,  is an excellent way to organize knowledge that can help you to structure, address,  and systematically approach your capstone topic.  A Logic Model is a graphic depiction, or road map, that presents the shared relationships among resources, activities, outputs, and outcomes/impacts of your capstone project’s activities.  The intended effect of a Logic Model is the “if-then” relationship among the project’s elements (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018).  Concept mapping is a useful tool that can be used to define your theoretical framework and to visually display how it is applied to your literature review (Grant & Osanloo, 2016).  Problem Tree analysis, also referred to as Situational analysis, can be used for project planning.  Problem Tree analysis can help you find solutions to an identified problem, issue, or need by mapping out the anatomy of the cause and effect (Luma Institute, 2021).  Root Cause analysis can be used to discover the root causes of a problem, issue, or need to identify appropriate solutions (Guavera, 2018).  Finally, a SWOT  Analysis is a dynamic planning model that can be used to plot out a future course for your capstone project by acting on strengths, while minimizing associated risks.  It is important for students to develop knowledge and skills with visual mapping models and techniques in order to enhance their capstone project planning and development.

Logic Models

Logic Models provide a visual representation of an entire program in a flow chart format. Logic Models are a systematic and visual way to present and share your understanding of the relationships among the resources you have compiled to conduct your capstone project, the activities planned for implementation, and the anticipated changes or results from project/program implementation.

Components of a Logic Model

Logic models can focus on any level of a program:  the entire organization, one of its component departments or programs, or just specific parts of a department or a program.  Although logic models differ widely in format and level of detail, the following key terms should be considered in its development (Refer to Table 7.1:  Key Terms Used in Logic Models)

Concept Mapping

Concept mapping is a useful tool that can be used to define your theoretical framework and to visually display how it is applied to your capstone project’s literature review.  Basically, concept mapping is a process for representing and organizing ideas using pictures. The goal of a concept map is to simplify complex concepts using circles, boxes, and/or other shapes that are linked with arrows carrying explanatory legends that depict pictorial connections between ideas (Grant & Osonloo, 2016).

A concept map offers you an instrument to draw a plan for how you will approach your capstone project within a specific theoretical framework.  First, you should review literature and organize key issues of interest related to your topic.  These are the foundational concepts that support your chosen theory.  Next, arrange your ideas in a hierarchical, logical structure.  You can start with general ideas and funnel your thinking down to more specific, related topics and ideas.  Each idea should have a clear purpose and significance in relation to the aggregate topic.  Readers of your capstone project should begin to see a clear picture of your ideas by previewing the organization and identification of your key topics.  Visual arrows and connectors should provide insight into how concepts are aligned and connected and illustrate the flow of ideas.  Lastly, frame out your entire map with your theoretical framework and your PIO/PICO question (Grant & Osonloo, 2016).  Concept maps will help you write a clear literature review in an organized manner that is aligned with your chosen theoretical framework (Refer to Table 7.2:  Items to be Included in a Literature Review Rooted in Theory).

The ability to construct a concept map illustrates two essential properties of understanding:  the representation and the organization of ideas.  A holistic view of your developing concept map will allow you to view concepts that may or may not fit with your theoretical framework.  Your capstone instructors, and mentor can help you evaluate the feasibility of the theory, plan, and approach to your capstone project (Grant & Osonloo, 2016). Problem-Tree Analysis

Problem Tree Analysis provides a template for mapping causes and effects to better understand the chain of connected circumstances that led to a current issue, problem, or need.  Using the tree as a metaphor, you separate the causes (roots) from the effects (branches) of a central issue (trunk).  Problem Tree Analysis provides a structured way for you to identify concerns, discern causes from symptoms, and potentially frame problem statements in a clear manner.  Problem Tree Analysis can help you:

  • untangle complex problems
  • reveal various causes and effects
  • build a shared understanding
  • provide a direction for problem-solving

Root Cause Analysis

Root cause analysis (RCA) is the process of discovering the root causes of problems to identify appropriate solutions.  RCA assumes that it is much more effective to systematically prevent and solve for underlying issues rather than just treating unplanned symptoms and putting out fires.  RCA can be performed with a collection of principles, techniques, and methodologies that can all be leveraged to identify the root cause of an event or trend.  Looking beyond superficial cause and effect, RCA can show where processes or systems failed or caused an issue, problem, or need in the first place. Identifying the root causes of a problem, issue, or need helps in developing more effective strategies to overcome it (Guavera, 2022).  There are three basic types of root causes that can have a potential impact on a problem, need, issue, or event:

  • Physical causes
  • Human causes
  • Organizational causes

The first goal of RCA is to discover the root cause of a problem, issue, need, or event.  The second goal is to fully understand how to fix, compensate, or to learn from any underlying issues within the root cause. The third goal is to apply what we learn from this analysis to systematically prevent future issues or to repeat successes ( Root cause analysis explained: Definition, examples, and methods . Tableau, n.d.).

There are several core principles that guide effective root cause analysis, some of which may be readily apparent while others may not (Refer to Table 7.4:  Core Principles of Root Causes Analysis).

It should be noted that RCA is not a one-size fits all methodology.  Rather, there are many tools, processes, and techniques that can be used in conducting in  RCAs.  Regardless of the technique chosen, the process for Root Cause Analysis remains the same (Refer to Table 7.5:  Root Cause Analysis Process).

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis

A SWOT analysis is a high-level strategic planning model that helps organizations, programs, and/or other entities identify where they are doing well and where they can improve from both an internal and external perspective. A SWOT analysis can help you evaluate your business, program, or other entity by considering multiple factors:

  • Strengths and weaknesses (represented as internal factors). Internal factors are considered things that can be controlled.  Examples include team members, program content, and geographical location.
  • Opportunities and threats (represented as external factors). External factors are considered things that cannot be controlled.  Examples include policies and regulations, economic trends, and competitors.

Students can use a SWOT analysis to plot out a future course for their capstone project that will focus on project strengths while minimizing risks.  Insights you glean resulting from your SWOT analysis should be used constructively as part of the capstone planning process (Jackson, 2022).

How to Do a SWOT Analysis

Undertaking a SWOT analysis requires planning and organization.  The following steps will take you through the process:

  • Step 1: Create a SWOT Matrix (Refer to Figure 7.1:  Sample SWOT Matrix)

  • Step 2: Consider including community, program, and capstone project stakeholders.  Including stakeholders input in a SWOT analysis can provide more insight as different perspectives can be considered (Jackson, 2022).
  • Step 3: Lists your strengths

  • Step 5: Identify your opportunities
  • Step 6: Identify your potential threats
  • Step 7: Examine your Matrix for connections

A SWOT analysis can help you with strategic planning for your capstone project and program development.  This tool can help you define objectives, create priority initiatives to help make them a reality.  Subsequently, a SWOT analysis can help you to identify measures that help to ensure that your capstone project is unfolding optimally (Refer to Appendix 7.E:  Sample SWOT Analysis for a Hospital).

Logic models can be a valuable method for establishing capstone program planning, an implementation plan, and the outcomes or changes you hope to achieve (Doll, 2010).  A concept map is an attempt to make explicit your program’s connection with theory so that it can be reviewed by others. While concepts maps provide a visual representation of how you will approach your capstone project in the context of a specified theoretical framework, logic models provide a graphic depiction that presents the shared relationships among the resources, activities, outcomes, and outcomes/impacts of your capstone project’s identified need, problem, or issue.  Problem Tree and Root Cause Analyses can help you with your capstone project by identifying how to approach a recognized problem, need, or issue.  Finally, a SWOT analysis can be used to evaluate your capstone project by considering multiple internal and external factors that can facilitate effective program development while minimizing risks.

6 Tips for Engaging Capstone Projects

Rather than creating a year-in-review capstone project, consider having students synthesize and personalize what they’ve learned, bringing it to a new level.

A group of young students are standing in a line on dead grass. It's overcast. There are bare-branched trees and a river nearby. They're holding black and green tablets. Their male teacher is holding antlers, letting the students take turns touching it.

It’s that time of the year, the race to the finish, only weeks until school ends for the summer (at least for many of us). With the pressures of testing behind us, we often have a bit more freedom to create curriculum and activities for students. We can try out new ideas, give students more choice in what they want to learn, and celebrate the learning that we've accomplished this year. One way that many educators like to do these things is through capstone projects, year-end culminations that often invite students to engage in choosing what they want to learn, as well as how they learn it. Capstone projects are a great tool for personalizing learning, and they're effective for creating even more student engagement. Here are some tips to create excellent capstone projects.

Ensure "Main Course, Not Dessert"

This is always a good reminder. While capstone projects often draw on the entire year's learning, it's important to pose this question to students as well as reflecting upon it ourselves as educators: What new learning will occur in this capstone project? This is key to ensuring that a capstone project isn't simply a fun activity (although that's still a good intention), and it helps in creating a project that's more challenging and truly focused on new learning and experiences. This new learning could be in a different context or topic from what the class has done so far, it might require a variety of skills that they haven't previously combined, or it could be a synthesis of sorts. Reflect on how you can ensure that there will be new learning in your capstone projects.

Take It To Another Level

Projects should focus on depth, not breadth. If you have the ability to allow students choice in what they learn, consider having them revisit a previously learned concept, topic, or skill. To ensure not only engagement but also "Main Course," create rubrics with students that focus on their going deeper into the content. Instead of "meeting standard," focus the assessment and learning on "exceeding standard." When students engage with a challenge, we should take them beyond the opportunity to review learning by pushing the learning even farther in a capstone project.

More Voice and Choice

This is nothing new, but we can always think of new ways to offer choice to our students. At the end of the year, after we've pressed through most of our required curriculum and standards, we may have some wiggle room on what students can learn. We might offer choice in one way, but not in another. Perhaps we want to spiral review a writing skill for all students, but offer them a choice in what history topic they want to learn about. Or we might need students to learn a math concept that we haven't yet covered in the curriculum, but they can choose how they want to learn it and connect that concept to the real world. Have students make personal, meaningful choices. See my previous blog about voice and choice for ideas about how to create more engagement.

Make a Difference

One of my favorite ways of taking capstone projects to another level is through service and making a difference. When students see that their work matters, they will be engaged. There are, of course, lots of opportunities to make an impact outside of the walls of the classroom, whether in the community or globally. There are also great ways for students to make a difference in their own lives once they understand the personal impact that's possible. Start by asking then how they want to make a difference in their capstone projects.

Tell the Full Story Through Assessment

Often, capstone projects involve what could be called a portfolio of student learning, which includes many steps in their yearlong journey. These assessments, graded or not, are valuable artifacts that serve as a photo album of a learning continuum, rather than simple snapshots representing individual moments of learning. Capstone projects are about growth, and both teachers and students can use assessments from the capstone project as well as earlier in the year to celebrate the growth in learning. Students, parents, and teachers deserve to see this growth in order to be proud of their learning from the entire year as well as during the capstone project.

Experiment With "No Grades"

Often we use grades as a way to get students to learn rather than addressing a root problem -- our students are not engaged. While you might want to grade students on their work, you might also try the experiment of moving students away from grades as a motivator, and instead focus on the learning. Rather grading every part of the capstone project, consider grading only the capstone component. This is also in ideal place to start the conversation with students about how they want to be and should be graded. Consider using capstone projects to start a culture shift away from grades and toward learning.

I love implementing and watching students implement capstone projects. I'm inspired by the ways that teachers structure these projects and by the amazing learning that students share. Capstone projects are truly an opportunity to create meaningful learning along with powerful engagement and impact. How do you create engaging capstone projects?

Senior Mechanical Engineering Students Design UAV System for Capstone Project

At the start of the spring semester, senior mechanical engineering students John Faetanini, Ben Parlett, Sam Gepperth and Grant Newland were tasked with designing a UAV system for The Corps, a contract engineering firm, as their senior design project. 

Their project is a culminating experience, applying their classroom knowledge to real-life application. Senior design projects are coordinated through the Innovation Center which connects industry partners to student teams. These multi-disciplinary projects allow students to create new products while working to meet the needs of industrial, societal and business communities.

The team’s goal is to create an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system that can be rapidly mass produced, assembled and shipped anywhere in the world. They have spent the semester researching the current UAV market and testing materials to create a full aerodynamic design for the vehicle and determine its manufacturing process. 

“It’s been really rewarding to see the project come together throughout the whole semester,” Faetanini said. “We started with nothing and are now at the point where we have the full design and a very good idea of how we’re actually going to build it.”

The Corps had minimal set requirements for the system which allowed the team creative freedom throughout the design process. The group maintained regular contact with and received feedback from their client through weekly status reports held over Zoom.

“Communicating with our client weekly has been a great learning experience,” Gepperth said. “It has helped me a lot to receive positive and constructive feedback, and it has been very good for conducing productivity in our group.” 

The team discovered they could be the most productive by dividing their work into two focuses: design and manufacture. Gepperth and Newland worked on the principle aircraft design and calculations for stress while Parlett and Faetanini focused on materials and manufacturing. 

“When Sam and Grant come up with a design, we have to come up with how to build it. If we go back and tell them it can’t be built that way, they have to rework their design,” Parlett said. “I feel like that very accurately represents an engineering workspace. You have your own department that says what can and can’t be done, and then you bounce it to the next person.”

In the final weeks of the semester, the group will be stress testing materials to confirm their calculations and finalize their design. They will present their project’s outcome at the School of Engineering’s Capstone Design Symposium at the end of April.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project’s goal was to develop a power source for a rover serving in a potential future mission to the asteroid Psyche, a celestial body of key interest due to its potential as a model of the Earth’s core. The project design innovates previous space energy technologies by merging photovoltaic modules enhanced by AGILE (Axially Graded Index Lens) lenses with thermoelectric generators. The AGILE lens increases energy capture of the solar panels by concentrating light from the sun onto the solar cells while the residual thermal energy is used by the thermoelectric generators to yield additional power. The system was designed to produce 75-125 Watts of power with a lithium-ion battery to allow the rover to operate briefly without sunlight. The solar cell performance was modeled both for monocrystalline silicon panels and triple junction GaAs panels using MATLAB Simulink and Crosslight APSYS respectively. An additional Simulink simulation was created to demonstrate real-time battery charging. A SolidWorks model was rendered to demonstrate the design layout. The design employs a layered setup, positioning the AGILE lens above the solar cell, with the TEG installed beneath. This configuration facilitates the collection of concentrated light energy by the solar cells, while simultaneously generating a temperature gradient that serves as the “hot” side of the TEG. Finally, a heat sink is incorporated beneath the TEG to enhance surface area for radiative heat transfer, thereby boosting overall performance. This model was used to simulate the thermoelectric generator’s performance using SolidWorks’ Thermal Analysis.
