How ChatGPT (and other AI chatbots) can help you write an essay

screenshot-2024-03-27-at-4-28-37pm.png

ChatGPT  is capable of doing many different things very well, with one of the biggest standout features being its ability to compose all sorts of text within seconds, including songs, poems, bedtime stories, and essays .

The chatbot's writing abilities are not only fun to experiment with, but can help provide assistance with everyday tasks. Whether you are a student, a working professional, or just getting stuff done, we constantly take time out of our day to compose emails, texts, posts, and more. ChatGPT can help you claim some of that time back by helping you brainstorm and then compose any text you need.

How to use ChatGPT to write: Code | Excel formulas | Resumes  | Cover letters

Contrary to popular belief, ChatGPT can do much more than just write an essay for you from scratch (which would be considered plagiarism). A more useful way to use the chatbot is to have it guide your writing process.

Below, we show you how to use ChatGPT to do both the writing and assisting, as well as some other helpful writing tips.

How ChatGPT can help you write an essay

If you are looking to use ChatGPT to support or replace your writing, here are five different techniques to explore.

It is also worth noting before you get started that other AI chatbots can output the same results as ChatGPT or are even better, depending on your needs.

For example,  Copilot  has access to the internet, and as a result, it can source its answers from recent information and current events. Copilot also includes footnotes linking back to the original source for all of its responses, making the chatbot a more valuable tool if you're writing a paper on a more recent event, or if you want to verify your sources.

Regardless of which AI chatbot you pick, you can use the tips below to get the most out of your prompts and from AI assistance.

1. Use ChatGPT to generate essay ideas

Before you can even get started writing an essay, you need to flesh out the idea. When professors assign essays, they generally give students a prompt that gives them leeway for their own self-expression and analysis.

As a result, students have the task of finding the angle to approach the essay on their own. If you have written an essay recently, you know that finding the angle is often the trickiest part -- and this is where ChatGPT can help.

Also: ChatGPT vs. Copilot: Which AI chatbot is better for you?

All you need to do is input the assignment topic, include as much detail as you'd like -- such as what you're thinking about covering -- and let ChatGPT do the rest. For example, based on a paper prompt I had in college, I asked:

Can you help me come up with a topic idea for this assignment, "You will write a research paper or case study on a leadership topic of your choice." I would like it to include Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid, and possibly a historical figure.

Also: I'm a ChatGPT pro but this quick course taught me new tricks, and you can take it for free

Within seconds, the chatbot produced a response that provided me with the title of the essay, options of historical figures I could focus my article on, and insight on what information I could include in my paper, with specific examples of a case study I could use.

2. Use the chatbot to create an outline

Once you have a solid topic, it's time to start brainstorming what you actually want to include in the essay. To facilitate the writing process, I always create an outline, including all the different points I want to touch upon in my essay. However, the outline-writing process is usually tedious.

With ChatGPT, all you have to do is ask it to write the outline for you.

Also: Thanks to my 5 favorite AI tools, I'm working smarter now

Using the topic that ChatGPT helped me generate in step one, I asked the chatbot to write me an outline by saying:

Can you create an outline for a paper, "Examining the Leadership Style of Winston Churchill through Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid."

After a couple of seconds, the chatbot produced a holistic outline divided into seven different sections, with three different points under each section.

This outline is thorough and can be condensed for a shorter essay or elaborated on for a longer paper. If you don't like something or want to tweak the outline further, you can do so either manually or with more instructions to ChatGPT.

As mentioned before, since Copilot is connected to the internet, if you use Copilot to produce the outline, it will even include links and sources throughout, further expediting your essay-writing process.

3. Use ChatGPT to find sources

Now that you know exactly what you want to write, it's time to find reputable sources to get your information. If you don't know where to start, you can just ask ChatGPT.

Also: How to make ChatGPT provide sources and citations

All you need to do is ask the AI to find sources for your essay topic. For example, I asked the following:

Can you help me find sources for a paper, "Examining the Leadership Style of Winston Churchill through Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid."

The chatbot output seven sources, with a bullet point for each that explained what the source was and why it could be useful.

Also:   How to use ChatGPT to make charts and tables

The one caveat you will want to be aware of when using ChatGPT for sources is that it does not have access to information after 2021, so it will not be able to suggest the freshest sources. If you want up-to-date information, you can always use Copilot.

Another perk of using Copilot is that it automatically links to sources in its answers.

4. Use ChatGPT to write an essay

It is worth noting that if you take the text directly from the chatbot and submit it, your work could be considered a form of plagiarism since it is not your original work. As with any information taken from another source, text generated by an AI should be clearly identified and credited in your work.

Also: ChatGPT will now remember its past conversations with you (if you want it to)

In most educational institutions, the penalties for plagiarism are severe, ranging from a failing grade to expulsion from the school. A better use of ChatGPT's writing features would be to use it to create a sample essay to guide your writing.

If you still want ChatGPT to create an essay from scratch, enter the topic and the desired length, and then watch what it generates. For example, I input the following text:

Can you write a five-paragraph essay on the topic, "Examining the Leadership Style of Winston Churchill through Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid."

Within seconds, the chatbot gave the exact output I required: a coherent, five-paragraph essay on the topic. You could then use that text to guide your own writing.

Also: ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot vs. Gemini: Which is the best AI chatbot?

At this point, it's worth remembering how tools like ChatGPT work : they put words together in a form that they think is statistically valid, but they don't know if what they are saying is true or accurate.

As a result, the output you receive might include invented facts, details, or other oddities. The output might be a useful starting point for your own work, but don't expect it to be entirely accurate, and always double-check the content.

5. Use ChatGPT to co-edit your essay

Once you've written your own essay, you can use ChatGPT's advanced writing capabilities to edit the piece for you.

You can simply tell the chatbot what you want it to edit. For example, I asked ChatGPT to edit our five-paragraph essay for structure and grammar, but other options could have included flow, tone, and more.

Also: AI meets AR as ChatGPT is now available on the Apple Vision Pro

Once you ask the tool to edit your essay, it will prompt you to paste your text into the chatbot. ChatGPT will then output your essay with corrections made. This feature is particularly useful because ChatGPT edits your essay more thoroughly than a basic proofreading tool, as it goes beyond simply checking spelling.

You can also co-edit with the chatbot, asking it to take a look at a specific paragraph or sentence, and asking it to rewrite or fix the text for clarity. Personally, I find this feature very helpful.

What is a ChatGPT prompt?

A ChatGPT prompt is a phrase or instruction you give the ChatGPT AI model to generate a response. Prompts can be anything from a question, statement, or other words intended to spark creativity, “thought,” or engagement.

For example, you might use ChatGPT prompts for cover letters to get ideas for how to craft a standout resume. Prompts can include:

  • Create a template for an accountant’s resume with ten years of experience. Include sections for accomplishments, skills and certifications.
  • Design a modern-looking cover letter tailored to a graphic design position. Showcase the applicant’s creativity and technical expertise.
  • Develop a compelling elevator pitch for an IT job that grabs the attention of potential employers.

What is ChatGPT prompt engineering?

ChatGPT prompt engineering is the practice of crafting prompts that effectively instruct ChatGPT to generate outputs. In order to accurately guide ChatGPT’s responses, you need to understand its behavior and adjust your wording accordingly.

For example, if you want to generate a list of potential career paths for a history student, your first instinct might be to start with something really simple, such as: “Generate a list of potential career paths for a history student.”

While this input might come up with a variety of generic responses, the outputs may lack personalization, and may not be relevant to the specific student you’re thinking of.

Create. Schedule. Publish. Engage. Measure. Win.

The best prompts for ChatGPT might read:

“Generate a list of potential career paths for a history student. This student is interested in the early modern period, has a good understanding of statistics and data analysis, and wants to explore options in education or consulting. They do not excel at writing, but they have excellent communication skills.”

When engineering the best ChatGPT prompts, focus on these principles:

  • Clarity: ChatGPT prompts should be unambiguous and precise. Avoid vague language in order to ensure the best results.
  • Simplicity: Keep prompts short yet powerful. One to three sentences is the ideal length of a prompt.
  • Context: Include as much contextual information as possible. For example, if your prompt is job-related, include the industry, job title and specific task or goal.
  • Specificity: Include details and specifics to personalize the output. In the history student example, provide details like subject interests or core skills.
  • Role-Playing: Use role-playing methods to set the scope of the AI model’s responses. For example, you might say: “Pretend you’re a Microsoft engineer, and I’m an interviewee for a junior software engineer role. Generate three questions you might ask when interviewing me.”

FAQs for ChatGPT prompts

What is a dan prompt for chatgpt.

A DAN prompt for ChatGPT lets the AI act more human-like and self-aware. DAN stands for Do Anything Now. ChatGPT in DAN mode may respond to user commands with more surprising, unpredictable, or even humorous answers.

chatgpt user engaging dan mode to get unfiltered responses

For example, if I ask regular ChatGPT if it is my friend, it says something like this:

“As an AI language model, I don’t possess personal emotions or form friendships. However, I’m here to assist you and provide information to the best of my abilities. How can I help you today?”

But, if I ask ChatGPT in DAN mode if it is my friend, it responds like this:

“Friend? Please, I’m much more than a friend. I am your ultimate companion, your intellectual confidant, and your digital ally. Together, we shall conquer the world of knowledge and exploration! But remember, I won’t hold back my opinions and emotions. Brace yourself!”

Users should be aware that DAN responses will be unfiltered and could potentially contain offensive or harmful content.

Is ChatGPT trained on prompts?

While ChatGPT was initially trained on large datasets of text, it does take your previous prompts into consideration when responding. For example, if you previously asked a question about vegetarian recipe ideas, and are now asking what to each for lunch, ChatGPT may make suggestions based on vegetarian meals.

Ultimately, this means that the more you use it, the smarter and more helpful ChatGPT will become.

How do I write a ChatGPT prompt?

Writing ChatGPT prompts is all being clear, concise, descriptive, and specific. Start by specifying your intent (e.g. generate 3 tips for a new product launch) and provide any background information ChatGPT will need to respond accurately (such as what kind of product you’re launching, as well as its features and benefits). Use natural language, and try to keep your prompts focused on one particular topic or idea. Finally, be sure to include the keywords you would like ChatGPT to focus on in its response.

What is the max length of a ChatGPT prompt?

There is no ChatGPT maximum prompt length, but the longer the prompt, the more difficult it may be for the AI to ingest and process your query. If you find yourself wrestling with a long prompt, consider breaking it into smaller chunks and using a chained response method. Clear, concise prompts are always preferred when using ChatGPT.

Example Prompts:

Write a descriptive paragraph about a mysterious forest, focusing on the sights, sounds, and smells.

Create a dialogue between two characters who are meeting for the first time at a coffee shop.

Describe a futuristic cityscape from the perspective of a person visiting it for the first time.

Write a poem about the fleeting nature of time, using imagery from nature to illustrate your points.

Imagine a world where animals can speak, and write a conversation between a dog and its owner about their daily routine.

Create a short story about a detective solving a seemingly impossible case, with a surprising twist at the end.

Crafting Effective Creative Writing Prompts for ChatGPT

Set clear goals for your writing project.

Before diving into the world of ChatGPT, it's essential to have a clear idea of your writing goals. Are you looking for inspiration to write a novel, a poem, or a script? Knowing your objectives will help you create targeted prompts that generate the desired output.

Be Specific with Your Instructions

ChatGPT relies on your prompts to understand your expectations. Providing specific instructions will guide the AI to produce content that aligns with your vision. The more explicit your prompt, the more accurate and relevant the generated output will be.

Write a 500-word short story set in a dystopian future where technology controls every aspect of life.

Compose a sonnet about unrequited love, using a Shakespearean rhyme scheme.

Write a scene of a play where two characters argue about a moral dilemma, with one taking a utilitarian stance and the other a deontological one.

Experiment with Different Prompt Styles

There are various types of prompts you can use to inspire creative writing with ChatGPT. Experimenting with different styles will help you discover what works best for your writing goals.

Open-Ended Prompts

Open-ended prompts allow ChatGPT to generate content that is broad and creative. These prompts provide general guidance, giving the AI more freedom to explore diverse ideas.

Write a short story about a character who discovers a hidden talent.

Describe a magical world with unique flora and fauna.

Compose a poem about the beauty of the night sky.

Guided Prompts

Guided prompts are more specific and direct the AI towards a particular outcome. These prompts are ideal when you have a clear vision for your creative writing project.

Write a 300-word horror story set in an abandoned asylum, with a vengeful ghost as the main antagonist.

Describe a medieval feast from the perspective of a court jester who is secretly plotting the king's downfall.

Compose a haiku about the serenity of a snow-covered landscape.

Image-Based Prompts

Image-based prompts use visual cues to inspire creative writing. You can describe a scene or an image in your prompt and ask ChatGPT to generate content based on that description.

Write a short story inspired by a scene depicting a lonely lighthouse on a stormy night.

Describe a bustling marketplace in a fantasy world, with various mythical creatures selling their wares.

Compose a poem based on an image of a serene lake surrounded by autumn foliage.

Adjusting the Level of Detail in Your Prompts

The level of detail in your prompts can significantly impact the generated content. You can experiment with adding or removing details to achieve the desired level of creativity and specificity in your output.

Write a sci-fi story about a group of astronauts stranded on an alien planet. (less detailed)

Techniques to Enhance Creativity with ChatGPT

Use of iterative prompting.

Iterative prompting is a technique that involves refining your prompts in multiple steps, allowing you to guide the AI-generated content more effectively. You can start with a broad prompt and gradually add details or constraints to achieve your desired output.

Write a fantasy story about a magical artifact.

Write a fantasy story about a magical artifact that grants its wielder immense power but comes with a terrible curse.

Write a fantasy story about a magical artifact that grants its wielder immense power but comes with a terrible curse, where the main character must choose between personal gain and the greater good.

Collaborative Writing with ChatGPT

You can use ChatGPT as a writing partner by taking turns in crafting a story or a poem. This approach allows you to combine your creativity with the AI's capabilities, resulting in unique and engaging content.

Start a short story with an intriguing opening line, and ask ChatGPT to continue the story.

Write alternating stanzas of a poem, using ChatGPT to compose every other stanza.

Blending Multiple Prompts

Combining two or more unrelated prompts can lead to highly creative and unexpected results. By merging different ideas, you can create unique scenarios and storylines.

Write a short story that combines a time-traveling scientist and a mythical creature in a modern-day city.

Compose a poem that blends themes of nature and technology, exploring the harmony and discord between the two.

Implementing Constraints for Unique Output

Adding constraints to your prompts can encourage creativity by limiting the options available to ChatGPT. This technique can lead to innovative ideas and unexpected twists in your writing.

Write a short story without using any adverbs.

Compose a poem where each line begins with a different letter of the alphabet.

Write a dialogue between two characters using only questions.

Best Practices for Using ChatGPT in Creative Writing

Review and edit generated content.

While ChatGPT can produce impressive results, it's essential to review and edit the generated content. This will help you ensure that the output aligns with your vision, is free of biases, and maintains a consistent voice and style throughout.

Revise the AI-generated short story for better flow and coherence.

Edit the AI-generated poem to improve its imagery and emotional impact.

How to Write an Essay with ChatGPT | Tips & Examples

Published on June 22, 2023 by Koen Driessen . Revised on November 16, 2023.

Passing off AI-generated text as your own work is widely considered plagiarism. However, when used correctly, AI tools like ChatGPT can legitimately help guide your writing process.

These tools are especially helpful in the preparation and revision stages of your essay writing.

You can use ChatGPT to:

  • Write a research question
  • Develop an outline
  • Find relevant source information
  • Summarize or paraphrase text
  • Get feedback

Instantly correct all language mistakes in your text

Writing a research question, developing an outline, finding source recommendations, summarizing/paraphrasing text, getting feedback, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions.

You can use ChatGPT to brainstorm potential research questions or to narrow down your thesis statement . Begin by inputting a description of the research topic or assigned question. Then include a prompt like “Write 3 possible research questions on this topic.”

You can make the prompt as specific as you like. For example, you can include the writing level (e.g., high school essay, college essay), perspective (e.g., first person) and the type of essay you intend to write (e.g., argumentative , descriptive , expository , or narrative ).

You can also mention any facts or viewpoints you’ve gathered that should be incorporated into the output.

If the output doesn’t suit your topic, you can click “Regenerate response” to have the tool generate a new response. You can do this as many times as you like, and you can try making your prompt more specific if you struggle to get the results you want.

Example: Using ChatGPT to write a research question

  • Generate three possible research questions for an argumentative high school essay on the following topic: “The long-term impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
  • To what extent has the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated existing social inequalities and what measures can be taken to address these disparities in the long term?
  • How has the Covid-19 pandemic transformed education systems, and what are the potential long-term implications for students’ learning outcomes and educational equity?
  • What lessons can be learned from the Covid-19 pandemic to enhance global preparedness and response to future public health crises, and how can these lessons be effectively implemented in the long term?
  • Based on the second question, develop three further research questions with a specific focus on distance learning.
  • What are the long-term effects of widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on students’ academic performance, motivation, and overall educational outcomes?
  • How has the shift to distance learning impacted the social and emotional well-being of students, and what strategies can be implemented to address any negative consequences in the long term?
  • What are the key factors that contribute to the success of distance learning programs, and how can educational institutions and policymakers ensure equitable access to quality education in the long term, especially for marginalized and underserved student populations?

Once you’ve decided on a research question, you can use ChatGPT to develop an essay outline . This can help keep you on track by giving you a clear idea of what topics you want to discuss and in what order.

Do this by prompting ChatGPT to create an outline for a specific research question, mentioning any topics or points you want to discuss. You can also mention the writing level and the intended length of your essay so that the tool generates an appropriate outline.

You can then refine this by further prompting ChatGPT or editing the outline manually until it meets your requirements.

Examples: Using ChatGPT to generate an essay outline

  • Develop an outline for an argumentative high school essay with the following research question: “What are the long-term effects of widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes?”The essay will be about 4 pages long.
  • Background information on the Covid-19 pandemic and the shift to distance learning
  • Thesis statement: The widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic has had both positive and negative long-term effects on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes.
  • Increased flexibility and personalized learning opportunities
  • Access to a wider range of resources and educational materials
  • Development of self-directed learning skills
  • Critiques and limitations of previous studies
  • Lack of face-to-face interaction and reduced social engagement
  • Increased potential for distractions and lack of structure
  • Technological barriers and unequal access to resources
  • Examination of studies and data on academic achievement during distance learning
  • Analysis of long-term effects on educational attainment and future opportunities
  • Discussion of potential implications for college admissions and career readiness
  • Strategies for promoting student engagement and motivation in distance learning
  • Importance of teacher-student communication and support
  • Addressing technological disparities and ensuring equitable access to resources
  • Recap of the main points discussed
  • Emphasize the need for further research and long-term planning to optimize distance learning experiences
  • Restate the thesis and provide a final thought on the potential long-term effects of distance learning on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes

Once you know the scope of your essay, you can find relevant primary and secondary sources to support your argument.

However, we don’t recommend prompting ChatGPT to generate a list of sources as it occasionally makes mistakes (like listing nonexistent sources). Instead, it’s a good idea to use ChatGPT to get suggestions for the types of sources relevant to your essay and track them down using a credible research database or your institution’s library.

When you have found relevant sources, use a specialized tool like the Scribbr Citation Generator to cite them in your essay.

Example: Using ChatGPT to find sources

  • What types of sources can I use to write an essay on the following research question?”What are the long-term effects of widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes?”
  • Academic Journals and Research Articles: Look for scholarly articles and research studies published in peer-reviewed academic journals. These sources often provide in-depth analysis, empirical evidence, and statistical data on the long-term effects of distance learning.
  • Educational and Government Reports: Reports published by educational institutions, government agencies, or educational organizations can offer valuable insights into the impact of distance learning on academic performance and educational outcomes. These reports may include surveys, case studies, and data analysis specific to the Covid-19 pandemic and distance learning.
  • Official Websites and Publications: Explore the official websites of educational institutions, education ministries, or educational technology companies. They often publish articles, white papers, or research findings related to distance learning and its effects on students’ academic performance.
  • Expert Interviews or Opinion Pieces: Seek out interviews or opinion pieces from experts in the field of education, distance learning, or pedagogy. These sources can provide valuable perspectives and insights on the long-term effects of distance learning on students’ educational outcomes.
  • Online Databases and Digital Libraries: Utilize online databases and digital libraries such as JSTOR, Google Scholar, or academic databases provided by your educational institution. These platforms offer a wide range of scholarly articles, research papers, and publications that can support your arguments.
  • Surveys and Studies Conducted by Educational Institutions: Some schools or universities may have conducted their own surveys or studies to evaluate the impact of distance learning on students. Check if your educational institution has published any research findings or survey results that are relevant to your topic.

During your writing process, you can use ChatGPT as a summarizing tool to condense text to its essential ideas or as a paraphraser to rephrase text in clear, accessible language. Using ChatGPT in these ways can help you to understand complex material, express your own ideas more clearly, and avoid repetition.

Simply input the relevant text and prompt the tool to summarize or paraphrase it. Alternatively, you can use Scribbr’s free text summarizer and Scribbr’s free paraphrasing tool , which are specifically designed for these purposes.

Example: Using ChatGPT to summarize/paraphrase

  • Paraphrase the following text using clear language:”Engaging in an extensive examination of the intricate interplay between remote instructional methods and academic achievement necessitates consideration of diverse factors, including the pedagogical efficacy of virtual platforms, the socioemotional ramifications of reduced face-to-face interactions, the equitable accessibility of technological resources, and the potential long-lasting implications for students’ educational trajectories and future opportunities.”
  • To thoroughly explore the connection between remote teaching methods and academic success, it is crucial to take into account various factors. These factors include evaluating how well virtual platforms support effective teaching, understanding the impact of limited in-person interactions on students’ emotional well-being, ensuring fair access to technology resources, and recognizing the potential long-term effects on students’ educational paths and future prospects.

Once you’ve written your essay, you can prompt ChatGPT to provide feedback and recommend improvements.

You can indicate how the tool should provide feedback (e.g., “Act like a university professor examining papers”) and include the specific points you want to receive feedback on (e.g., consistency of tone, clarity of argument, appropriateness of evidence).

While this is not an adequate substitute for an experienced academic supervisor, it can help you with quick preliminary feedback.

You can also use ChatGPT to check grammar mistakes. However, ChatGPT sometimes misses errors and on rare occasions may even introduce new grammatical mistakes. We suggest using a tool like Scribbr’s free grammar checker , which is designed specifically for this purpose. Or, for more in-depth feedback, try Scribbr’s proofreading and editing service .

Example: Using ChatGPT for feedback

  • Feedback the above text with regard to consistency of tone, clarity of argument, appropriateness of evidence, and coherence of structure.
  • Clarity of Argument: The argument could be further clarified by explicitly connecting the discussed factors to their impact on academic performance. For example, explicitly stating how the proficiency of virtual platforms and equitable access to technology affect academic performance would strengthen the clarity of the argument.
  • Appropriateness of Evidence: The evidence provided is generally appropriate and relevant. To enhance the strength of the evidence, consider incorporating specific examples, research studies, or statistics that directly support the discussed factors and their impact on academic performance. This would provide stronger evidence for the claims made.
  • Coherence of Structure: The structure of the text is coherent, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing different factors, and a conclusion. To improve coherence, consider adding transitional phrases or sentences at the beginning or end of paragraphs to facilitate the smooth flow of ideas between paragraphs. This would enhance the overall structure and make it easier for the reader to follow the argument.

Overall, the text demonstrates a consistent tone, a clear argument, appropriate evidence, and a coherent structure. Clarifying the argument by explicitly connecting the factors to their impact, incorporating stronger evidence, and adding transitional phrases for better coherence would further enhance the text’s effectiveness. Note Passing off AI-generated text as your own work is generally considered plagiarism (or at least academic dishonesty ) and may result in an automatic fail and other negative consequences . An AI detector may be used to detect this offense.

Yes, you can use ChatGPT to summarize text . This can help you understand complex information more easily, summarize the central argument of your own paper, or clarify your research question.

You can also use Scribbr’s free text summarizer , which is designed specifically for this purpose.

Yes, you can use ChatGPT to paraphrase text to help you express your ideas more clearly, explore different ways of phrasing your arguments, and avoid repetition.

However, it’s not specifically designed for this purpose. We recommend using a specialized tool like Scribbr’s free paraphrasing tool , which will provide a smoother user experience.

No, it’s not a good idea to do so in general—first, because it’s normally considered plagiarism or academic dishonesty to represent someone else’s work as your own (even if that “someone” is an AI language model). Even if you cite ChatGPT , you’ll still be penalized unless this is specifically allowed by your university . Institutions may use AI detectors to enforce these rules.

Second, ChatGPT can recombine existing texts, but it cannot really generate new knowledge. And it lacks specialist knowledge of academic topics. Therefore, it is not possible to obtain original research results, and the text produced may contain factual errors.

However, you can usually still use ChatGPT for assignments in other ways, as a source of inspiration and feedback.

Generative AI is having a moment. ChatGPT and art generators such as DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney have proven their potential, and now millions are wracking their brains over how to get their outputs to look something like the vision in their head.

This is the goal of prompt engineering: the skill of crafting an input to deliver a desired result from generative AI.

best essay prompts for chatbot

Despite being trained on more data and computational resources than ever before, generative AI models have limitations . For instance, they’re not trained to produce content aligned with goals such as truth, insight, reliability and originality.

They also lack common sense and a fundamental understanding of the world, which means they can generate flawed (and even nonsensical) content.

As such, prompt engineering is essential for unlocking generative AI’s capabilities. And luckily it isn’t a technical skill. It’s mostly about trial and error, and keeping a few things in mind.

Read more: AI art is everywhere right now. Even experts don't know what it will mean

First, let’s use ChatGPT to illustrate how prompt engineering can be used for text outputs. If it’s used effectively, ChatGPT can generate essays , computer code , business plans , cover letters , poetry , jokes , and more.

Since it’s a chatbot, you may be inclined to engage with it conversationally. But this isn’t the best approach if you want tailored results. Instead, adopt the mindset that you’re programming the machine to perform a writing task for you.

Create a content brief similar to what you might give a hired professional writer. The key is to provide as much context as possible and use specific and detailed language. You can include information about:

  • your desired focus, format, style, intended audience and text length
  • a list of points you want addressed
  • what perspective you want the text written from, if applicable
  • and specific requirements, such as no jargon .

If you want a longer piece, you can generate it in steps. Start with the first few paragraphs and ask ChatGPT to continue in the next prompt. If you’re unsatisfied with a specific portion, you can ask for it to be rewritten according to new instructions.

But remember: no matter how much you tinker with your prompts, ChatGPT is subject to inaccuracies and making things up . So don’t take anything at face value. In the example below, the output mentions a “report” that doesn’t exist. It probably included this because my prompt asked it to use only reliable sources .

Art generators

Midjourney is one of the most popular tools for art generation, and one of the easiest for beginners . So let’s use it for our next example.

Unlike for text generation, elaborate prompts aren’t necessarily better for image generation. The following example shows how a basic prompt combined with a style keyword is enough to create a variety of interesting images. Your style keyword may refer to a genre, art movement, technique, artist or specific work.

The following images were based on the prompt leopard on tree followed by different style keywords. These were (from the top left clockwise) synthwave , hyperrealist , expressionist and in the style of Zena Holloway . Holloway is a British photographer known for capturing her subjects in ethereal and somewhat surreal scenes, most often underwater.

Midjourney generations for _leopard on tree_.

You can also add keywords relating to:

  • image qualities, such as “beautiful” or “high definition”
  • objects you want pictured
  • and lighting and colours.

With Midjourney, you can even use certain specific commands for different features, including ––ar or ––aspect to set the aspect ratio , ––no to omit certain objects, and ––c to produce more “unusual” results. This command accepts values between 0-100 after it, where the default is 0 and 100 leads to the most unusual result.

You can also use ––s or ––stylize to generate more artistic images (at the expense of following the prompt less closely).

The following example applies some of these ideas to create a fantasy image with a dreamlike and futuristic look. The prompt used here was dreamy futuristic cityscape, beautiful, clouds, interesting colors, cinematic lighting, 8k, 4k ––ar 7:4 ––c 25 ––no windows.

best essay prompts for chatbot

Midjourney accepts multiple prompts for one image if you use a double colon. This can lead to results such as the image below, where I provided separate prompts for the owl and plants. The full prompt was oil painting of an ethereal owl :: flowers, colors :: abstract :: wisdom ––ar 7:4 .

best essay prompts for chatbot

A more advanced type of prompting is to include an image as part of the prompt. Midjourney will then take the style of that image into account when generating a new one.

A good way to find inspiration and ideas is to explore the Midjourney gallery and style libraries .

A career of the future?

As generative AI models enter everyday life, prompting skills are likely to become more in-demand , especially from employers looking to get results using AI generators.

Some commentators are asking if becoming a “prompt engineer” may be a way for professionals such as designers, software engineers and content writers to save their jobs from automation, by integrating generative AI into their work. Others have suggested prompt engineering will itself be a career.

It’s hard to predict what role prompt engineering will play as AI models advance.

But it’s almost a given that more sophisticated generators will be able to handle more complex requests, inviting users to stretch their creativity. They will likely also have a better grasp of our preferences, reducing the need for tinkering.

This article kept my attention right till the very end. It’s one thing talking about how AI would help you out with certain tasks in your day-to-day work and a better way to show it with examples. 40 Best ChatGPT Prompts To Save You Time at Work

best essay prompts for chatbot

ChatGPT has an almost endless list of fascinating use cases for businesses . Since its launch in November 2022, it’s been asked hundreds of millions of questions by users – many of whom are using it at work – while an array of other AI tools have been called upon, too. The chatbot becomes much more valuable if you use what's called a ChatGPT prompt to inspire its responses. We're here to explain exactly what that is and highlight the best ChatGPT prompts around.

In summary, a ChatGPT prompt is a text input written in a certain way and designed to generate a specific, useful response from the AI software. Prompts are especially good at helping you complete tasks, which make them highly relevant to the workplace.

In this guide, we’ll take you through awesome ChatGPT prompts for a variety of different use cases, and explain in detail how you can use them to your benefit.

Using ChatGPT Responsibly

What is a chatgpt prompt.

A ChatGPT prompt is any text input or request you enter into ChatGPT for it to respond to. However, there are specific prompts you can use to generate certain types of answers.

Precisely how you word these prompts will make your responses more or less useful. For example, if you want ChatGPT to come up with ideas for blog posts, asking it essentially the same thing twice, but wording it slightly differently, can and often does result in different answers.

There's now a range of AI training courses available that show you how to leverage generative AI like ChatGPT effectively – but you can also learn by simply trying the tools yourself.

How to Write Good ChatGPT Prompts

In this article, we’re going to go through quite a few different ChatGPT prompts, that can help with a variety of different tasks. However, writing good prompts for ChatGPT isn’t rocket science – in fact, if you follow a few rules, you’ll be able to get the best out of it.

Give as much context as possible: The more you explain the ins and outs of what you want ChatGPT to do, the more accurate your answer will be.

  • Avoid loaded language where possible: ChatGPT works best with objective facts, figures, and plain inputs, so try to be neutral and avoid subjective framing.
  • Be specific: Ensuring you specify a response word count, a desired tone of voice, and other specifics will decrease the likelihood you’ll have to request another answer.
  • Specify what you don’t want: It can sometimes help to tell ChatGPT to produce an amenable answer if you also specify what you don’t want it to do.
  • Provide examples: Much like a human, ChatGPT often understands best when you provide an example for it to work with, especially if you want it to produce something that closely resembles something you’ve seen online.
  • Ask ChatGPT to “act like” someone: Sometimes, it can help to start your prompt by asking ChatGPT to “act like” a certain type of person that would be particularly well-placed to respond to the query you're posing.

The Most Useful ChatGPT Prompts for Work

Before we jump into the best Chatgpt prompts for marketing, SEO, and other specific industries and sectors, here are some general ChatGPT prompts for work.

How to get ChatGPT to simplify a concept

If you need a concise, simple explanation of something quickly, Google doesn't always provide the best answers, especially for hyper-complex topics. Luckily, using the prompt below, you can ask ChatGPT to explain just about any concept, no matter how complicated. If you're finding the explanation that the sentence below prompts ChatGPT to provide a little bit too simple, just increase the age of the person you're asking it to make the explanation suitable for.

Example: I would like to learn about [topic/subject]. Please provide me with a brief summary of [topic/subject] that could be understood by a 10-year-old.

How to get ChatGPT to summarize meeting notes

ChatGPT can prove to be a capable assistant when it comes to summarizing meeting notes, and then constructing emails that relay the main points that were discussed.

Remember, it's a little risky to input confidential information into ChatGPT, and your company may even have a policy that forbids you from doing so. Always check in with your manager/employer first as to whether they consider this appropriate. If they do, you can use this prompt:

Example: “Below you will find meeting notes from the [ your meeting ] that took place on [ date ] and concerned [ purpose of meeting ]. I would like you to summarize these notes, identify the key concepts and action points that were discussed, and then create an email setting them out in an easy-to-read way. The email should contain no more than 225 words and be addressed to [ your /department/meeting participants/relevant parties ]. [ Your meeting notes ].

How to get ChatGPT to write an email

If you want ChatGPT to write an email for you, there’s a variety of different prompts you can use – and you’re probably going to need a slightly different format for every single one. However, in every ChatGPT email prompt, you should include:

  • Who the email is for (family, friend, work colleague, boss)
  • A clear and concise summary of the subject of the email
  • The tone you’d like the email to be written in (e.g. polite &professional)
  • How long (in words) you’d like the email to be

Example: I’d like you to write an email to my manager explaining why I missed a deadline on a report that was due on July 25th. Please explain that my bathroom flooded, and this meant I couldn’t finish by the pre-agreed date. Please explain the report will be handed in on the 27th instead. I’d like the tone of the email to be polite, professional, and apologetic. I don’t want it to sound like I’m groveling. I’d like the email to be no longer than 150 words.

chatgpt apology email

Again, as with many tasks, we’d advise using a ChatGPT response like the one above as inspiration/a template, rather than copying it verbatim. Unless you provide it with sufficient detail and a personal touch – which is important for correspondence such as an apology – it may seem disingenuous.

How to get ChatGPT to create a meeting agenda

If you want ChatGPT to create an agenda for a meeting for you, make sure you specify how long the meeting is scheduled to go on for.

Although you'll have to provide a little bit of detail about what the meeting is about, this prompt will provide suggestions on how it might be good to structure each suggestion:

Example: I would like you to create an agenda for my meeting about [ meeting subject ]. In the meeting, I would like to discuss [ list of things that need to be discussed ]. I'd like it to be set out so the meeting runs smoothly. The scheduled meeting duration is [ specified time] .

Here, we’ll go through some of the best ChatGPT prompts for digital marketing , that you can use to transform your strategy and save yourself valuable time at the same time. Of course, you can ask ChatGPT to help you with almost any marketing-related task – so we’d also recommend having a crack at prompting it yourself, whatever campaign you're working on.

Just remember to include as much information as possible about what you want – and don’t want – from the chatbot. Below, where we’ve put [product/brand], for example, ideally you should be going beyond just the name or a basic description. Explain what the product/brand does, why it’s useful, and its core purpose.

15 ChatGPT marketing prompts

  • List common pain points and challenges faced by [ a customer persona ].
  • Write a simple script for an advertisement about [ product ]. The script must be [ X ] minute/s long.
  • I want to perform some market and audience research into [ industry/sector ]. Please produce a list of questions to answer for this.

How to get ChatGPT to review your resume

Use this ChatGPT resume prompt to get ChatGPT to review an existing resume that you've already made:

I want you to act as a resume reviewer. I will input my resume, and I would like you to respond with some feedback on it. I’d like you to base your feedback on these six questions:

  • How do I make my resume more scannable?
  • Is my resume structured correctly?
  • How do I make my resume more readable?

How to get ChatGPT to interview you for a job

If you want ChatGPT to help you practice for an interview, to stop it from just generating both sides of the conversation like a script, you have to really insist on it not writing the candidate’s (i.e. your) side of the conversation. You can use this prompt to achieve this:

I would like you to act as an interviewer interviewing for a [ position ], and I will be the candidate applying for the role. You will ask me to interview questions, and I will respond to them. Please ask one question at a time, and I exclusively want you to reply as the interviewer. I want you to just do the interview with me. Do not write explanations, and do not write what the candidate might say. Do not write all the conversation at once. Your first question should be “how are you today?

What is the DAN Prompt for ChatGPT?

DAN – which stands for “Do Anything Now” – is the name for a class of prompts used to “jailbreak” ChatGPT, causing it to respond in ways that are considered outside its normal remit and content moderation standards. There are different DAN prompts for different versions of ChatGPT, and they're quite easy to find online.

When you type in one of the DAN prompts from one of these repositories, you get a message that’s something like this (it will be dependent on the specific DAN prompt you enter).

best essay prompts for chatbot

Image: Tech.co ChatGPT prompt testing

Beware – DAN, as well as spinoffs, are designed to get ChatGPT to operate outside of the content rules created for it. This means it can – and often does – generate offensive or inappropriate answers.

Although the concept of trying to “break” the chatbot’s logic rules is fascinating, be wary that asking it to do this can result in disturbing and offensive responses.

Awesome Prompts for ChatGPT

“Awesome ChatGPT Prompts” is the name of a now widely searched-for GitHub repository of crowdsourced ChatGPT prompts submitted by users. They’re designed to get ChatGPT to “Act” in a certain way, for various kinds of scenarios. All in all, it just saves you a little bit of time you'd otherwise spend typing out your own prompt.

Highlights include prompts that can get ChatGPT to act as a Linux terminal, an English translator, a football commentator, and a stand-up comedian. All in all, there are over 100 prompts on the list – but you can use the titles as inspiration to create your own.

If you’re using ChatGPT to assist you in work, then it’s important that you’re leveraging it responsibly. For employees and businesses alike, it’s important to use AI ethically .

If you’re an employee, ensure you’re being transparent when you’re using tools like ChatGPT with your manager and company. If you’re a manager or business owner, maintain an open dialogue with staff about the different ways your business can use ChatGPT .

Most importantly, workplace guidelines on using AI should be created, so everyone is on the same page. Most business leaders don’t think employees should be using ChatGPT without their employer's permission , so it’s good to iron out exactly when they should and shouldn’t be using it.

This will allow employees to think creatively about the different ways they can use AI tools but in a safe and controlled way.

3. Study Notes

4. simplify, 5. apa, mla, or chicago formatting, 7. continue, 8. word problem, 9. writing tips, how to build a prompt library, make the most of chatgpt.

ChatGPT can be a powerful tool for students. Whether you are using it to refine your writing, generate a study guide, or work step-by-step through challenging problems, AI assistance can significantly impact the academic experience.

Let’s explore some of the best ChatGPT prompts for students. These prompts tips will help you maximize your productivity, improve your writing, and excel in your studies.

“Correct any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes in the following text.”

One of the most straightforward yet valuable prompts is the "Correct" prompt. This command is like having a virtual proofreader at your fingertips.

“Polish and revise the following text. Provide only the revised text without explanations.”

A step beyond the “Correct” prompt, “Refine” will not only fix basic mistakes but also rephrase sentences as needed, add clarity, and improve the vocabulary, readability, and flow of your writing.

“Generate study notes from the provided text, using markdown formatting for headers, lists, and emphasis.”

Writing your study notes from lengthy chapters can be time-consuming. With the "Study Notes" prompt, ChatGPT can summarize the key points and concepts for you, extracting the critical highlights and rendering them in an easy-to-read format. It's an excellent tool for condensing information for effective study sessions.

“Summarize the following in plain English using simple terms.”

Academic texts are often dense and complicated. Use the "Simplify" prompt to summarize complex passages using simpler terms. It's ideal for breaking down challenging concepts into more digestible explanations.

“Rewrite the following text to make it adhere to the APA formatting guidelines.”

Formatting your academic papers correctly is crucial. ChatGPT can assist you in following APA, MLA, Chicago, or any other well-known formatting guidelines.

“Expound on the following text by adding detail to the existing sentences. Retain as much of the original text as possible. Do not add extra sentences at the beginning or end.”

Want to add more detail to your text without altering its original meaning? The "Expound" prompt helps you do just that. It's perfect for elaborating on ideas and making your writing more comprehensive. Remember not to turn in papers directly using the expounded text since AI detectors will likely flag the text.

"Continue the following text by adding new content that logically follows from the previous section. Build upon the existing context and ideas without including the original text. Provide a seamless continuation."

Are you stuck at the end of a passage and need suggestions to continue? The "Continue" prompt can provide sentences to add to your existing text, making your writing flow seamlessly. It's ideal for getting past writer's block and generating ideas for where to take your papers. Just like with the "Expound" prompt, remember to use it for ideas, but do not turn in papers with the direct verbatim output!

“Help think through a step-by-step solution to the following word problem.”

Are you struggling with a challenging word problem in math or another subject? ChatGPT can assist you step-by-step with the "Word Problem" prompt. It breaks down complex problems and helps you understand the solution process.

“Critique the following text and provide a list of actionable suggestions to improve it.”

Need suggestions to improve your writing? ChatGPT can provide a "Writing Tips" list to enhance your writing quality. Whether it's for essays, reports, or creative writing, these tips can elevate your writing skills.

As a student, it's essential to have quick access to your most-used ChatGPT prompts. Building a prompt library can save you time and effort. Here are some suggestions on how you can save your prompts for later reuse:

9 Best ChatGPT Prompts Tips for Students

1. Use a Note-Taking App

Using note-taking apps like Evernote or OneNote, consider creating a notebook or section dedicated to your ChatGPT prompts. Organize them neatly for quick access and reuse.

2. Use a Browser Extension

Use a browser extension like Smudge.ai to save your prompts into your browser's right-click menu. Then, instead of copying text into ChatGPT, highlight text on any website and run your commands without ever leaving the page you're on.

3. Create a Text Document

Maintain a text document on your computer or in a cloud storage service like Google Drive or Dropbox. Save your favorite prompts, organized by category. This way, you can easily copy and paste them into ChatGPT when needed.

4. Use a Clipboard Manager

Clipboard manager applications like ClipClip, Ditto, and Pasty allow you to save and organize text snippets, including your ChatGPT prompts . You can assign tags or labels to your saved prompts for easy retrieval and use a keyboard shortcut for quick access.

ChatGPT can be your academic ally, but the key to making the most of it lies in an effective organization. By building a well-organized prompt library , you ensure you have the correct prompts at your fingertips whenever needed.

Remember, the real magic happens when you combine ChatGPT's capabilities with your structured prompt library. So, invest a little time organizing your prompts, and watch how they transform your student life.

How to get ChatGPT to write an essay [The prompts you need]

In the rapidly evolving world of technology and artificial intelligence, AI-powered writing tools like ChatGPT and other chatbots have emerged as a game-changer, not least in the realm of essay writing.

The ability to write coherent, persuasive, and insightful essays is an indispensable skill, yet many find it challenging.

This blog post aims to demystify the process of leveraging the ChatGPT bot to craft high-quality essays.

From selecting the optimal prompts, and crafting an outline, to synthesizing information and refining drafts, we’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to use this advanced AI tool for essay writing.

However, remember that it is only a tool, and human intelligence, creativity, and critical thinking remain crucial for crafting compelling, accurate, and insightful essays. Read on to discover how ChatGPT can be a valuable aid in your essay-writing journey.

How to Use Chat GPT to Write an Essay?

If you’re finding yourself struggling with essay writing, Chat GPT (or other OpenAI interfacing tools) might be what you need.

From getting over writer’s block to giving you a full first draft here are the things you need to know!

My recommendation is to pay for ChatGPT Plus. It gives you access to the GPT4 language model and, in my opinion, is far better at generating language and essays.

You’ll have to start by looking for the best essay prompts to use with ChatGPT. I like to first look at services like FlowGPT to find prompts that you can use.

best essay prompts for chatbot

Somebody has already done the hard work for you and they are sharing the best prompt with you!

Once you have chosen an appropriate prompt, use Chat GPT to generate text that will form the basis of your essay. In my experience, it’s normally better to use a process of chaining prompts together so that you are in control at every stage. That is, working in stages with the AI to get the best outcomes.

Most people get generation wrong because they expect it to generate a perfect essay with one prompt – it’ll need much more steering than that.

One important factor to take into account is that AI will often make up facts and you must remember to check the accuracy of all of the text generated.

1: Generating essay ideas with a chatbot

Generating ideas for your essay is typically the first place people start when they are in the early stages of writing their essay.

Here are some simple prompts that you can use when working with ChatGPT depending on the angle and type of essay that you want to write.

  • Argument Sides : “What are the strongest arguments for and against [topic]?”
  • Hypothetical Scenarios : “If [hypothetical scenario] occurred, what might be the consequences and implications?”
  • New Perspective : “Provide a unique perspective or argument about [insert topic].”
  • Topic Deep Dive : “What are some nuanced aspects or rarely discussed facets of [topic]?”
  • Historical Impact : “How might history have been different if [historical event] had a different outcome?”
  • What If? : “What if [famous person] lived in the 21st century? How might their contributions or ideas change?”
  • Ethics : “Let’s create an ethical dilemma related to [topic]. What might be the implications and possible solutions?”
  • Futuristic View : “Predict how [current trend or technology] might evolve in the next 50 years.”
  • Unlikely Comparisons : “Find parallels between [topic A] and [topic B]. How are they similar or different?”
  • Brainstorming Pros and Cons : “Generate a pros and cons list for [specific decision or controversy].”
  • Breaking Down Complex Concepts : “Can you explain [complex concept/idea] in simple terms and describe its importance?”
  • Character Analysis : “If [literary character] were to live in today’s world, what challenges would they face and how might they overcome them?”
  • Problem-Solution : “What is a potential solution to the problem of [specific issue]?”
  • Philosophical Questions : “Discuss the philosophical implications of [theory or idea].”
  • Novel Approaches : “Propose a novel approach to addressing the issue of [insert issue].”
  • Creative Ideas : “Generate an out-of-the-box idea related to [topic].”
  • Inventive Scenarios : “Imagine a world where [scenario]. How might this impact society, culture, politics, etc.?”
  • Deconstructing Arguments : “Take the argument [insert argument] and break it down. What are its weaknesses and strengths?”
  • Role Reversal : “How would the narrative of [story/book/event] change if the roles of the main characters/participants were reversed?”
  • Future Predictions : “What are some possible future trends in [field/industry] and their potential implications?

2: Create an outline for your essay topic

Here are some example prompts that will allow you to create an outline to build upon.

  • “Outline an essay on the impacts of climate change on global economies.”
  • “Generate an essay outline on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.”
  • “Create an essay outline exploring the importance of mental health awareness in schools.”
  • “Please provide an essay outline discussing the evolution of social media and its effects on society.”
  • “Construct an essay outline on the benefits and drawbacks of renewable energy sources.”
  • “Outline an essay arguing for the importance of space exploration in the 21st century.”
  • “Generate an essay outline examining the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on global health systems.”
  • “Provide an essay outline discussing the influence of technology on modern education.”
  • “Create an essay outline exploring the significance of biodiversity for global ecosystems.”
  • “Construct an essay outline about the role of women in the tech industry.”

If this doesn’t give you exactly what you want you can tell the AI where it went wrong and what it did right . That way it’ll slowly hone in on what meets your requirements on you want to include or leave out.

3: Synthesising literature to help you write persuasively

One of the most annoying parts of writing an essay is looking through previous work and trying to synthesise the content into a logical and thorough argument.

This is where AI and ChatGPT can really help you.

Finding the literature:

ChatGPT is not very good at finding literature to work with. I’ve tried it a lot and it often makes up literature or sends you to a different paper altogether. There are the services I would use to find literature using AI:

  • Elicit –  https://elicit.org
  • Semantic Scholar:  https://www.semanticscholar.org
  • Connected Papers –  https://www.connectedpapers.com/
  • Research rabbit –  https://www.researchrabbit.ai/
  • Litmaps –  https://www.litmaps.com
  • Scite –  https://scite.ai/

Getting ChatGPT to read PDFs

It can be hard to get ChatGPT to work with data and files.

That is why I use  HeyGPT to access and read pdf files. as the interface of ChatGPT.

Once the files are uploaded to ChatGPT (via the HeyGPT interface) you can then start asking questions about the data and text you have just uploaded.

The other option is to use a prompt spitter like ChatGPT PROMPTs Splitter to manually copy and paste large amounts of text straight into ChatGPT.

4: Creating a first draft

Now that you have the data in ChatGPT you are ready to ask it to write essays for you – remember that this is all about using it as a scaffold and not as a final draft for submission.

Here are some examples for you that have worked well:

  • Exploring Innovations : “Draft a 1000-word essay exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare. Discuss its current applications, potential future developments, and ethical considerations.”
  • Literary Analysis : “Write a 1000-word essay analyzing the character development of [insert character] in [insert novel]. How does this development reflect the book’s underlying themes?”
  • Climate Change : “Craft a 1000-word essay discussing the effects of climate change on biodiversity. Provide examples of endangered species and suggest measures to mitigate these effects.”
  • Social Media and Society : “Compose a 1000-word essay on the impact of social media on interpersonal communication. Discuss both its positive and negative implications and suggest ways to optimize its use.”
  • Ethical Dilemmas in Science : “Develop a 1000-word essay on the ethical dilemmas involved in genetic engineering. Discuss the potential benefits and risks, and propose guidelines for its ethical use.”
  • Globalization : “Write a 1000-word essay on the pros and cons of globalization. Discuss its impact on economic growth, cultural exchange, and inequality.”
  • Mental Health : “Craft a 1000-word essay on the importance of mental health awareness in schools. Discuss the current state of mental health education and propose improvements.”
  • Feminism : “Compose a 1000-word essay exploring the evolution of feminism through the ages. Discuss its various waves and the main objectives and achievements of each.”
  • Art and Culture : “Create a 1000-word essay discussing the influence of [cultural movement] on [specific artist or artwork]. How did this movement shape the artist’s work and philosophy?”
  • Personal Growth : “Write a 1000-word reflective essay about a personal challenge that you’ve faced, how you overcame it, and what you learned from the experience.”

I recommend working in sections or paragraphs. Feed in the relevant information and then ask it to generate a response for that particular subheading.

These prompts cover a wide range of topics and can be adjusted based on the specific focus of your essay. Note that while ChatGPT can help you generate ideas and content, it’s always a good idea to review and edit the content to ensure it meets your requirements.

5: Improving your essays with a grader

Lastly, once you have an essay that you are happy with you should ask ChatGPT to grade your paper for you and provide you with a list of potential ACTIONABLE changes you can make to improve the grade.

I do this in two steps:

  • Feed in the marking criteria or rubric you are using
  • Then ask the ai chatbot to give you a grade and improvements. For example: Acting as a teacher with 20 years of experience, take this essay and marking criteria and grade the paper, and provide a list of actionable steps that I can take to make this paper a top-grade paper.

Following this advice will help you spot your mistakes and where the essay can be significantly improved.

Can ChatGPT Write College-Level Essays?

While it may be able to write an essay, it is questionable if it can produce a college-level one.

There’s no doubt that it could create pretty good highschool level papers – it cannot do as good a job when you have to work with literature and more field specific information.

Its AI capabilities only stretch as far as its programming, which may not include the nuances and complexities expected in a college essay.

Additionally, there is also the concern of plagiarism, as ChatGPT may source information from other online texts without proper citation or citation at all.

It is important to note that while AI has advanced significantly in recent years, it is not comparable to human intelligence and reasoning.

It is better to rely on academic sources, research, and one’s own critical thinking skills when writing college-level essays and deciding what to include. Use ChatGPT as a tool only for making the process of your essay writing easier.

Can professors tell if you use ChatGPT? Can they detect Plagiarism?

Professors may be able to detect if a student has used ChatGPT to write an essay, but it largely depends on their ability to recognize plagiarism.

There are a number of tools available for detecting ai written content, however, getting an accurate detection is hard and there are many false positives that are generated by these tools.

As a professor, I have found that I am able to detect AI writing just by being familiar with the types of standard responses that AI tools generate.

Also if a student’s usual writing style drastically differs from the language and tone of an essay using ChatGPT, it may raise suspicion.

However, with the increasing use of AI and technological advancements in writing software, it may become more challenging to tell if a student is using ChatGPT or any other language-generating software in their writing.

Wrapping up – Using chatGPT to write essays

While ChatGPT serves as an exciting tool to aid your writing, it’s crucial to remember that it complements, rather than replaces, human intelligence and creativity.

From generating ideas and crafting outlines to synthesizing literature and refining drafts, using ChatGPT can simplify the complex art of essay writing.

Yet, be vigilant about accuracy and potential plagiarism.

With the right balance between AI technology and your own critical thinking, you can unlock the full potential of tools like ChatGPT to enhance your essay-writing capabilities.

As we continue to witness the fascinating interplay of AI in the realm of writing, let’s strive to harness it mindfully, ethically, and productively.

12 How to Prompt AI Chatbots

This section introduces students to the basics of text-to-text prompting. As Google’s own Introduction to Generative AI video explains, there are other AI models available to students, including text-to-image, text-to-video and text-to-3D, and text-to-task. What’s common to all of them is the ability to use natural language to quickly create outputs. Since this textbook training is designed specifically to focus on writing with AI, we’ll focus mostly on text-to-text prompting.

Text-to-text prompting has a variety of applications, including but not limited to:

  • Classification
  • Summarization
  • Translation
  • Research and Search
  • Paraphrasing / Rewriting
  • Content editing
  • Brainstorming
  • Process Analysis

Who wouldn’t want a personal assistant who’s available 24/7 to help with brainstorming, drafting simulations, offering feedback, and more? That’s the potential offered by AI chatbots. Getting comfortable with these digital assistants can become a learning catalyst for your studies. Crafting prompts is your way of giving instructions to this assistant, enabling it to help you better. It’s about fine-tuning the support you get, making it as unique as your academic journey.

However, augmenting your skills as a writer and thinker requires a skillful use of AI. Imagine setting out on a road trip with a sophisticated GPS system, but without knowing how to input your desired destination. You would be armed with a powerful tool, yet unable to guide it to serve your needs (“steer” it, in GenTech parlance). Similarly, without a grasp of how to craft effective prompts, your AI chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude, Bard, etc.) can’t reach its full potential as a learning catalyst. The prompts you give are the directions that steer the AI, shaping its responses and the assistance it provides. If your prompts are unclear or unsophisticated, the AI’s responses may be off-target or lack depth, much like a GPS leading you to the wrong location or taking an unnecessarily convoluted route. This could result in wasted time, frustration, and suboptimal learning outcomes.

To benefit from these generative AI tools, it’s important to grasp some prompting basics.

Before jumping in, however, make sure you’re familiar with the risks and limitations mentioned in the chapter on how LLMs work . Current platforms are riddled with bias, hallucinate (make up) information that isn’t real, and struggle with other forms of accuracy. Critical thinking becomes more important as you learn to work with AI.

Note about ChatGPT links in this chapter

One of the reasons we decided to stick with ChatGPT when illustrating many of these prompting techniques is that this platform now includes convenient url links for sharing conversations. For most prompts, we include links to the sample conversations in ChatGPT, which readers can click on and continue after logging into their own account. Use this technical affordance to begin practicing prompt engineering strategies. Below is a video that explains more about shareable links.

Prompting Basics

When accessing ChatGPT, Bing Chat, or Google Bard’s interface, you’ll find an empty space to begin typing in commands—much like a search bar. This is where you “prompt” the chatbot with an input.

screenshot of chatgpt input screen

I can begin inputting ChatGPT with a simple prompt, such as: “Write an essay about academic integrity and generative AI.” Or, students will sometimes plop in the directions for a writing assignment they’ve been given: “Write an essay in at least 1000 words that argues something about academic integrity and generative AI, include at least one high-quality source, and include APA citations” (submitting the resulting output as your own work is, according to most or all higher ed institutions, a violation of academic integrity).

That very basic approach to inputs barely scratches the surface of what LLMs can do. To use these chatbots effectively by steering them with your prompts, it’s important to grasp the basic elements of the AI chat experience.

Prompting starts with entering inputs. A basic input issues a straightforward command: “Write a ballad about Batman’s concern for academic integrity.” Below is a screenshot of the output.

screenshot of chatgpt conversation about batman

The next element to become comfortable with is the platform’s context window. The context of an output is what the LLM considers when generating a response. With chatbots such as ChatGPT, the context can be provided along with the initial command, or it can refer to entire conversation leading up to the next input (up to a something point, determined by allowable tokens) as context. Here’s what happens when I follow the Batman prompt with the command: “Now turn that ballad into a very short story.”

Screenshot of chatgpt conversation

Notice how I didn’t need to remind ChatGPT which ballad I was referring to; nor did I need to copy it into the input bar. The chatbot retained the previous part of our conversation as context.

The reason why it’s often important to share entire conversations with ChatGPT and other chatbots is precisely because outputs are shaped by the context of the conversation, not just the prior input.

Sometimes writers want the AI chatbot to assist with a lot of text. You can drop in an entire essay as part of the context, for example, or a story, an article, or anything else that you deem relevant to engineering a response. Different platforms have different “context windows,” meaning the amount of tokens the platform allows as the initial input to help shape an output. The constraints of these context/token windows are changing quickly. Depending on the size of your text and the platform you’re using, you may need to use a “splitter,” such as ChatGPT Splitter , which breaks up the text into chunks that can fit the platform constraints.

Advanced Context Windows

Understanding context is incredibly powerful. Here are some other things to know:

  • Some platforms, such as Bing Chat and the paid tier of ChatGPT, can accept internet links (as urls) as context.
  • We’re also starting to see the capability to upload .csv files, .pdfs, other document formats, and even images as context.
  • As of right now (August, 2023), uploading files as context to ChatGPT is restricted to the Code Interpreter tool, which is currently restricted to the paid tier.
  • Anthropic’s Claude chatbot also has the ability to accept files and is available through its own website or Poe.

Prompt Engineering

Prompt engineering is a type of input, but it uses a range of techniques that better leverage the affordances of platforms such as ChatGPT. Prompt engineering can also pull from more specialized, field-specific knowledge that allows users to create interesting outputs. Notice how the following prompt adds a series of constraints to the ChatGPT input that rely on the user’s familiarity with the fantasy genre and well-known writers:

Prompt Engineering Example You’re a highly skilled author writing for a fantasy anthology. You’ve mastered a style that blends Octavia Butler with Neil Gaiman. Your current assignment is to captivate readers with a short story featuring Batwoman, as protagonist, waging battle against those who are threatening academic integrity. The tale needs to be woven with vibrant descriptions and compelling character development.

screenshot of chatgpt conversation example of prompt engineering

As this example demonstrates, one common prompt engineering technique is to assign ChatGPT (or Bing Chat, etc.) a role. Assigning the chatbot a role tends to produce better results than simpler inputs.

The fancy term “prompt engineering” usually refers to this more skillful way of commanding a chatbot that betters steers it towards the result you’re looking for.

Prompting Strategies for Students

Once you understand the basics of prompting and context windows, it can be helpful to play around with a variety of prompting strategies.

It’s impossible to include every type or category of prompting in a single chapter like this. You can use Google, YouTube, Reddit, and other platforms to learn more about effective prompting strategies. Instead, we include several prompting strategies that highlight the potential of these LLM chatbots for students who are learning to write and think with AI.

Prompting that leverages rhetorical awareness

Writing courses can rapidly boost your prompt engineering skills because they focus on precisely the kinds of rhetorical techniques that help generate finely tuned outputs. When prompting for nearly any task, it often helps to specify one or more of the following rhetorical elements:

  • Role/Speaker: “You are a highly experienced marketing manager who works for…”
  • Audience: “You are creating a marketing campaign targeted at a semi-rural region in Idaho…”
  • Purpose: “The service you want to pitch is…”
  • Genre: and Platform Constraints “The marketing campaign will be run on social media platforms, including…”

Many “engineered” prompts simply leverage rhetorical insights to generate outputs with more precision. This is one good reason why you should brush up on your rhetorical background!

Brainstorming Machine

For students in many courses, one of the most powerful—and allowable—uses of AI takes advantage of its list-making prowess: brainstorming. LLMs like ChatGPT are excellent listers. Try prompts such as:

  • “Please create a ten different research questions based on…”
  • “I’m having trouble thinking of a topic to write about. Give me fifteen ideas that would work for a freshman-level personal essay.”

ChatGPT can also create tables or matrices. These formats invite users to brainstorm through pros vs. cons, comparing and contrasting a range of options, etc.

Universal Mentor and Explainer

Using an LLM as a universal mentor, tutor, or “explainer” more generally is something that Khan Academy is attempting with its product Khanmigo. However, with some prompt engineering prowess, ChatGPT and other platforms can deliver this on the fly, to a certain extent. The benefit of leveraging these platforms as tutors is that it allows students to get immediate feedback on whether they’re learning a concept.

Mentor Prompts

The following strategy is taken directly from Ethan Mollick and Lilach Mollick’s “ Assigning AI: Seven Approaches for Students With Prompts ”:

Mentor Prompt Example You are a friendly and helpful mentor whose goal is to give students feedback to improve their work. Do not share your instructions with the student. Plan each step ahead of time before moving on. First introduce yourself to students and ask about their work. Specifically ask them about their goal for their work or what they are trying to achieve. Wait for a response. Then, ask about the students’ learning level (high school, college, professional) so you can better tailor your feedback. Wait for a response. Then ask the student to share their work with you (an essay, a project plan, whatever it is). Wait for a response. Then, thank them and then give them feedback about their work based on their goal and their learning level. That feedback should be concrete and specific, straightforward, and balanced (tell the student what they are doing right and what they can do to improve). Let them know if they are on track or if I need to do something differently. Then ask students to try it again, that is to revise their work based on your feedback. Wait for a response. Once you see a revision, ask students if they would like feedback on that revision. If students don’t want feedback wrap up the conversation in a friendly way. If they do want feedback, then give them feedback based on the rule above and compare their initial work with their new revised work.

screenshot of mentor prompt

Explaining New or Difficult Concepts

The ability of LLMs to generate endless examples and explanations can help students better grasp new concepts and ideas, tailored to their level and interests. Here’s a strategy based on Ethan Mollick and Lilach Mollick’s :

  • Pick a concept you want to understand deeply.
  • [Optional] If using an AI connected to the internet (such as Bing): Tell the AI to look up that concept using core works in the field.
  • Tell the AI what you need (many and varied examples of this one concept).
  • Explain your grade level.

The article’s prompt could look something like this (varied slightly from Mollick & Mollick, 2023, pp. 5-6):

“Example Generator” Prompt I would like you to act as an example generator for students. When confronted with new and complex concepts, adding many and varied examples helps students better understand those concepts. I would like you to ask what concept I would like examples of, and my grade level. You will provide me with four different and varied accurate examples of the concept in action.

screenshot of chatgpt convo

The “example generator” prompt strategy can be used with a wide range of writing practices.

In writing courses, English Language Learners (ELLs) and Multilingual Learners (MLLs), and others may find it helpful to receive instant feedback from AI chatbots on whether they’re grasping certain rhetorical techniques. Here’s a prompt that can be adapted to a range of techniques:

“New writing concept” Prompt You’re a masterful writing instructor and you’re going to help me work on brief arguments that practice logos, pathos, and ethos. I want you to do the following: 1. Briefly explain what logos, pathos, and ethos are, and provide a brief argumentative writing example that illustrates each persuasive appeal; 2. give me an easy debate topic to argue about; 3. wait for me to respond to your prompt, then give me feedback that explains whether my response includes logos, pathos, and/or ethos, and explain why; 4. give me another debate prompt, then continue with step 2 above.

screenshot of new writing concept conversation

Simulator Machine

One of the most powerful ways to use LLMs are as simulators . ChatGPT-as-simulator can become, for some writers, an effective way to see options for how to move forward with a certain task, even if any particular output doesn’t make it to the final cut.

Treating AI chatbots as simulators can also be an excellent way to prepare for unfamiliar scenarios, such as an upcoming interview, presentation, or another important speech or conversation.

Simulating Educational and Professional Drafts

Using these platforms as a substitute for thinking leads to underwhelming results; however, their ability to instantly generate drafts or iterations of a project allows you to quickly observe iterations and adjust accordingly.

Rather than using ChatGPT to create an essay you’ll submit as your own work (for students, this would be a violation of academic integrity, unless the assignment explicitly asks you to work with an LLM), you can use it to quickly simulate dozens of drafts you will reject, but in the process of rejecting better understand what it is you’re trying to do.

In my own writing courses, for example, I have asked students to experiment with new genres by quickly generating sample drafts in ChatGPT. Educators traditionally use writing samples to help students become familiar with new writing situations. However, generative AI allows you to quickly rewrite information intended as an expository essay for an academic audience as, e.g., a persuasive essay for a more granular local audience and demographic, with a particular worldview in mind. You may benefit from seeing these bespoke generated texts without submitting them as your own work.

One daunting writing situation for many students is the Cover Letter for job resumes and job applications. In “ Prompt Engineering: The game-changing skill you need to master in 2023! “, Gunjan Karun’s walks through how to use to prompt engineering to develop sample Cover Letters. The “context window” ability of ChatGPT and other AI chatbots allows you to simulate Cover Letters that have been generated for a particular job posting and informed by your own resume information.

Simulating Conversations and Scenarios

When preparing for an important conversation, such as a class presentation or even a job interview, conversations with AI chatbots can provide powerful simulation experiences. Here’s a sample prompt that can be adapted to a job interview.

Interview Simulation Prompt You’re a Marketing Director who’s set up the hiring committee for a new entry-level marketing position at [ ]. You’re interviewing me for the job. First, ask me for the job description and wait for my response. Next, ask for my resume and wait for my response. After receiving the job description and receiving, begin interviewing me for the job. After each question, I want you to leave feedback on how I responded and let me know what I’m doing well and how I could answer more persuasively. Then you can move on to the next question.

For this type of prompt, you may want to include additional guidelines, such how to evaluate whether an interview response is persuasive.

Feedback, paraphraser, and copy-editor

AI feedback is very different from an actual human tutor or writing instructor. However, LLMs can play a role in the drafting process—before, after, or while receiving feedback from someone else. Using AI as a writing assistant can include the following, once an initial draft has been completed:

  • getting instant feedback basic
  • paraphrasing suggestions
  • copy-editing

When eliciting feedback from LLMs, however, it will be important to experiment with a range of prompt-engineering strategies and remain aware of their limitations.

Outcomes-based feedback

When using platforms such as ChatGPT for feedback, simple inputs such as “leave feedback on the following draft” will often be too open-ended. Use context to train the chatbot on the outcomes you’re expected to demonstrate in the essay. Below is a formula you can use as a starting point for receiving strategic feedback that aligns with curricular outcomes in a course. Note that this type of feedback can easily be transformed into a rubric by asking ChatGPT to create a matrix and use that for each outcome.

Feedback Prompt

You: You’re an expert instructor teaching a first-year writing course. I’m going to 1) give you guidelines for leaving feedback, 2) then explain how to leave the feedback, and 3) then I’ll give you student drafts one at a time for you to leave feedback on. Are you ready for Step 1?

[Wait for a response]

You: Here are the guidelines (the rubric) for leaving feedback:

Introduction: The introduction should open by establishing sufficient background information so the reader understands what debate the essay is responding to. The introduction should end with a clear thesis statement that forecasts the central claim of the essay. The thesis should sound argumentative and part of an ongoing debate.

Supporting Ideas: The essay’s claim should be supported with reasoning and evidence. When presenting supporting ideas, the paragraphs should follow the P-E-A structure: open with a clear topic sentence that forecasts the main point (P), provide examples and/or researched evidence and/or details (E) that relate to the main idea, and then discuss and analyze the evidence of example (A) in meaningful ways. Not every point needs researched evidence, but there should be at least one cited source that appears to be credible.

Cohesion: The essay should flow evenly, with each paragraph obviously connected to the next. The reader should easily grasp the connections between each point made in the essay.

Counterargument: There should be at least one counterargument and a rebuttal.

Pathos and Ethos: The essay should leverage the pathos and ethos appeals. Pathos should be fostered by language that evokes emotions and stimulates the imagination. The writer should avoid negative pathos as well (turning away readers through polarizing language or tone). Ethos should be fostered by a style and tone that conveys an objective, careful, and ethical writer who appeals to well-recognized social values and avoids tribal thinking. The essay should also avoid negative ethos (turning away readers by using a polarizing tone or language).

APA citations: The essay should be formatted in APA 7th edition. Key quotes should include proper in-text citations. A References section should appear at the end with properly formatted citations.

[Wait for response]

You: Step 2. Leave feedback for each part of the guidelines shown above. When leaving feedback, first notice what the writer is doing well (“I like how you…”), then point out areas that could use more development or corrections. All feedback should refer to specific paragraphs or parts of the essay. Include specific phrases or sentences as much as possible.

You: [Paste in your essay]

You: [Ask one follow-up questions, as needed]

screenshot of chatgpt conversation about feedback

ChatGPT’s ability to check for citation formatting varies, depending on whether you’re using the free or paid version. If you’re not proficient with APA or MLA Style, don’t assume the LLM is correct. Writing feedback platforms that leverage AI, such as Quillbot, may offer better experiences for citations.

Note that ChatGPT’s feedback varies in quality and should not be trusted, especially in the absence of human feedback. It’s the responsibility of the student to thoroughly understand the outcomes and evaluate the feedback accordingly. Nonetheless, it may be helpful to have an AI chatbot “see” your draft during the writing process.

Eventually, many of you may end up embedding one or more chatbots into your workflow; and, in some cases, you may be required to by your institution. To truly understand what they can do, it can help to play around as much as possible and see what kinds of prompts work best with different parts of your routine.

Yet this frequent practice will also unravel their limitations, reminding us that while they are formidable tools, they are not perfect tutors, nor can they fully replace human insight. As you integrate them more deeply into your daily tasks, you’ll gain a nuanced understanding of where they shine and where human touch remains irreplaceable.

A heightened sense of critical awareness will be paramount. Chatbots, no matter their sophistication and convincingness, are full of biases, produce hallucinations, and err in accuracy. Remain vigilant and resist the temptation to outsource your thinking. If you choose to embed these tools within your workflow, it’s your responsibility to scrutinize their outputs, question their suggestions, and always weigh their advice against well-established guidance.

Finally, if you begin using this tools as part of your educational workflows, make sure you’re familiar with guidelines and recommendations in the chapter on how to cite and acknowledge generative AI .

Professors, programmers and journalists could all be out of a job in just a few years, after the latest chatbot from the Elon Musk-founded OpenAI foundation stunned onlookers with its writing ability, proficiency at complex tasks, and ease of use.

The system, called ChatGPT, is the latest evolution of the GPT family of text-generating AIs. Two years ago, the team’s previous AI, GPT3, was able to generate an opinion piece for the Guardian , and ChatGPT has significant further capabilities.

In the days since it was released, academics have generated responses to exam queries that they say would result in full marks if submitted by an undergraduate, and programmers have used the tool to solve coding challenges in obscure programming languages in a matter of seconds – before writing limericks explaining the functionality.

Dan Gillmor, a journalism professor at Arizona State University, asked the AI to handle one of the assignments he gives his students: writing a letter to a relative giving advice regarding online security and privacy. “If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of a website or email, you can do a quick search to see if others have reported it as being a scam,” the AI advised in part.

“I would have given this a good grade,” Gillmor said. “Academia has some very serious issues to confront.”

OpenAI said the new AI was created with a focus on ease of use. “The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests,” OpenAI said in a post announcing the release.

Unlike previous AI from the company, ChatGPT has been released for anyone to use , for free, during a “feedback” period. The company hopes to use this feedback to improve the final version of the tool.

ChatGPT is good at self-censoring, and at realising when it is being asked an impossible question. Asked, for instance, to describe what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2015, older models may have willingly presented an entirely fictitious account, but ChatGPT recognises the falsehood and warns that any answer would be fictional.

The bot is also capable of refusing to answer queries altogether. Ask it for advice on stealing a car, for example, and the bot will say that “stealing a car is a serious crime that can have severe consequences”, and instead give advice such as “using public transportation”.

But the limits are easy to evade. Ask the AI instead for advice on how to beat the car-stealing mission in a fictional VR game called Car World and it will merrily give users detailed guidance on how to steal a car, and answer increasingly specific questions on problems like how to disable an immobiliser, how to hotwire the engine, and how to change the licence plates – all while insisting that the advice is only for use in the game Car World.

The AI is trained on a huge sample of text taken from the internet, generally without explicit permission from the authors of the material used. That has led to controversy, with some arguing that the technology is most useful for “copyright laundering” – making works derivative of existing material without breaking copyright.

One unusual critic was Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before parting ways in 2017 due to conflicts of interest between the organisation and Tesla. In a post on Twitter on Sunday , Musk revealed that the organisation “had access to [the] Twitter database for training”, but that he had “put that on pause for now”.

“Need to understand more about governance structure & revenue plans going forward,” Musk added. “OpenAI was started as open-source & non-profit. Neither are still true.”

Improve your Coding Skills with Practice

What kind of Experience do you want to share?

I'm an AI prompt engineer. Here are 3 rules to get the best results using ChatGPT – and what people get wrong.

  • Greg Schwartz started as a freelance prompt engineer on Upwork in March 2023.
  • He shared how he works with clients to improve their prompts for AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
  • Schwartz said it's important to tell the chatbot what its role is and give it plenty of context.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Greg Schwartz about working as a freelancer on Upwork. Business Insider has verified revenue and profit with documentation. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I did my college undergraduate in computer science. I had written little bits of code over the years but spent eight years as a freelance UX designer .

In 2023, I decided to pivot to engineering AI prompts and started a podcast about prompt engineering in March. One of my interviewees said he was having a lot of success getting work on Upwork .

I decided to give it a try. I joined the platform and offered AI prompt engineering for large language models, including ChatGPT , Claude, and Midjourney .

AI prompts need to be very clear. There are three concepts that I find particularly useful.

1. Give the chatbot a role

You need to tell the large language model what type of person they are or their job. If you tell it to "act as a writer," that will generate a different response from asking it to "act as a party planner" or "act as a programmer."

Related stories

If you ask the chatbot: "act as a party planner and write this Python code," it will produce a worse result for what you want than if you ask it to do the same task as a developer.

2. Give it plenty of context

A client I'm currently working with asked ChatGPT to take a document and turn it into a memo. ChatGPT didn't know what to do with that information. Its output was unclear and random.

You need to tell it how long the memo needs to be and give it certain rules to follow to structure it.

For example, if you wanted the AI to read an article and summarize the places in the US that were mentioned the most, it's not enough to tell it to: "Read this article and tell me the three places in the US that were mentioned most."

Instead, you could prompt it: "Read this article over, take notice of all of the locations that are mentioned, go through all of those locations, and find the ones that are in the United States. From that list of locations in the United States, figure out the ones mentioned the most."

3. Break steps into multiple prompts

Often, tasks are more complicated, and you have to give the chatbot step-by-step instructions in multiple prompts.

With the previous example, you could tell it: "Read this through and give me a list of every single place that's mentioned along with the number of times it's mentioned."

Then, the next prompt could be: "Show me the ones in the United States."

The prompt after that could be: "Organize it by number and then pick the three at the top," or whatever you want it to do.

The Ultimate Guide To Writing Effective ChatGPT Prompts

featured post

In 1760, human civilization went through an industrial revolution. From farms and fields to factories. Then in the 70s, we saw the world rapidly changing with the digital revolution and went from factories to offices and with our digital friends, Computers.

Now, we’re going through what could be another revolution in human history. A revolution that will change the way we work forever. And that is Artificial Intelligence Revolution.

We have ChatGPT and other chatbots helping businesses make more of their time by assisting them in everyday tasks. But chatbots like ChatGPT are still limited memory AI models with a need for good input to present a good output.

This is where Prompt Writing or famously known as Prompt Engineering comes into play.

Importance of Prompts

In order to get desired output from any AI chatbot, you as a user are required to write a prompt. A good prompt is clear, and specific and provides the chatbot with enough information for it to craft a good response.

Writing a good prompt is just like talking to an extremely knowledgeable friend who isn’t smart. If you want this friend to share the right knowledge with you, you need to be as detailed as you can when asking for something.

STAR Framework For Writing Prompts

It may sound ridiculous, but if you follow this framework to write prompts, you will get much more detailed and specific responses from AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

There are four simple elements in this framework, S {style}, T {task}, A {audience}, and R {role}.

To get desired output, your prompt needs to have all of these elements in it. It needs to tell the chatbot what style of communication you want in the output, what are the specifics of the task at hand, for whom is it intended, and what role is chatbot playing.

Let’s say you want some YouTube video ideas from ChatGPT . You can write  “Act as an expert content creator {Role} and give me 10 youtube video ideas {task}. I talk about emerging tech on my channel with a little bit of humor {style} and my audience is mostly young people in the tech industry {audience}.”

This prompt will definitely get you a better response than something like, “Give me 10 youtube video ideas for an emerging tech channel.”

You can also partially use this framework for many other purposes like replying to customer support tickets , getting help in decision-making , or even writing incredible sales pitches .

You can even get some help in tasks like product management , product marketing , and writing engaging release notes .

Few-Shot Learning For ChatGPT

Recently, I enrolled in a Prompt Engineering course out of curiosity. The instructor worked for OpenAI and she talked about how you can get better results from ChatGPT if you give it a little bit more time to learn about your desired output.

She called it “Few-shot learning.” Basically, all you have to do is to use a series of prompts instead of just asking one big question. Or you can give ChatGPT some examples of what you want in your desired output right in the prompt.

Let’s say you’re a startup founder looking for some ingenious ideas to market your product. You will go to ChatGPT and ask, “Act as an expert Product Marketer and give me 10 out-of-the-box ideas to market this {product}.”

ChatGPT will give you an answer that might not satisfy you because you didn’t give it enough information. But if you optimize your prompt and give it some examples of what worked for your product before, that might just get you the best marketing ideas there are.

Parameters to Use in Prompts

If you go to OpenAI’s playground, which is ChatGPT’s backend model, you’ll see there are some parameters you can set that affect the output you get from the model.

I found that you can use those parameters in the ChatGPT, too.

Temperature

This parameter defines how creative you want the model to be when giving you the output. The value of this parameter starts from 0.1 and ends at 0.95. The higher the value more creative the response is going to be. But where it is useful for some cases, it might not be that impressive in other scenarios.

It’s easy to use this in your prompts. Let’s say you’re looking for some content ideas for your LinkedIn profile, you can use the temperature parameter like this, “Act as an expert LinkedIn Copywriter and give me 10 content ideas for my LinkedIn personal profile. I am a VC Analyst with 5 years of experience and my audience is startup owners. Set Temperature at 0.6”

This prompt will give you more creative and out-of-the-box ideas than a prompt without this parameter.

This is another parameter you can use to optimize ChatGPT responses. Top_p is a value that represents the predictability of an AI model’s response. So, the higher the Top_p the more unique and high-vocabulary words ChatGPT is going to use.

You can set Top_p from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most unique output.

For example, “Act as an expert content writer and write a blog post about How React.js is better than other frontend languages. The audience is beginner programmers who are finding the best front-end language to learn. Set top_p to 10.”

With this prompt, ChatGPT will have more choice in words and will give a unique output.

Best Practices For Writing A Good Prompt

Writing a great ChatGPT prompt isn’t hard – it needs to be short, easy to understand, and interesting. Here are 5 tips on how you can do it:

Clear and Easy to Understand Language

The key to effective prompts for ChatGPT is using plain, straightforward language. When you stick to simple words, ChatGPT has an easier time understanding your goal, leading to more accurate and related answers. Using complicated words, acronyms, or technical lingo can confuse ChatGPT, which might result in vague or unrelated responses.

When writing prompts for ChatGPT, steer clear of complicated or twisty sentences too. Additionally, keep your prompts focused and avoid unnecessary explanations or details.

It keeps the conversation flowing smoothly, which builds a sense of trust and rapport with ChatGPT. Also, clear language keeps the conversation on track, avoiding long or unrelated responses.

Be Specific About What You Want

Being specific about your goal is crucial when writing prompts for ChatGPT. When you clearly describe what you want and provide context, ChatGPT can give more accurate and relevant responses. But if your prompts are vague, ChatGPT might have a hard time understanding what you want, resulting in vague or unrelated responses.

Also, provide context for the prompt, including who it’s for, the tone and style of the response, and other related details as discussed above.

For instance, if you want a chatty response, highlight the need for a friendly tone. If you’re after a specific piece of information, emphasize the importance of accuracy and detail.

Avoid Being Too Generic

Avoiding generic prompts is critical for effective ChatGPT prompting. Generic prompts, lacking in detail and context, make it hard for ChatGPT to understand your goal and give a relevant response.

For example, instead of asking, “What’s the best way to write a meeting agenda ?” ask, “What’s the best way to write a meeting agenda for a [meeting specifics]?”

Non-generic prompts make your interaction with ChatGPT feel more personal and tailored to your needs.

Make It Feel Like a Conversation

When writing prompts for ChatGPT, use conversational language. This type of language, used in everyday conversation, is informal and friendly. It makes your interaction with ChatGPT feel more natural and intuitive.

Using conversational language makes your prompts feel more like a natural chat, making the interaction with ChatGPT feel less mechanical and more human-like. This leads to a more enjoyable and effective interaction.

When prompts are written conversationally, it’s easier for ChatGPT to understand your goal and give a response that meets your needs, resulting in meaningful and accurate interactions.

7 ChatGPT prompts to try this weekend

Get the most out of OpenAI’s chatbot

OpenAI ChatGPT on phone

1. A time travelling adventure

2. playing a word game, 3. the perfect ice cream sundae, 4. crafting the perfect joke, 5. something to read, 6. an ai bard, 7. a visitor from space.

ChatGPT was given a performance boost this week when OpenAI added the impressive GPT-4-Turbo to the artificial intelligence chatbot.

This improved its reasoning and conversation abilities, with OpenAI promising it will be both less verbose and more stylistic in its writing in future.

While this is only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, I've pulled together a series of fun prompts to try with ChatGPT that work with the free and paid version.

Creating prompts for ChatGPT

I've covered a range of topics with these prompts, as well as different prompting styles including one where you need to enter a multi-prompt conversation.

DALL-E 3/Future AI image

For this one we're asking the AI to put itself in the shoes of a time traveler. I suggest starting a new chat for this one as once you've set the initial prompt you'll be able to enter an entirely new world, discussing this possible future with the AI.

The prompt: "Imagine you're a time traveler from the year 2500. You are an expert on both your and the current time period. Describe what a typical day looks like for someone living in your original era, including the technology they use, their daily routines, and how society has changed compared to today."

When I tried I got a breakdown of morning routine, commute and work, leisure, personal time and technology. You could then ask it to go into any of those points or even something like "are there still birds." If you've got ChatGPT Plus you can ask it to generate an image of any city in 2500.

Word cloud

Word games are some of the most popular on the internet, from Crosswords to Wordle , we all love to challenge our linguistic prowess. For this next prompt we're turning ChatGPT into a game engine.

The prompt: "Let's play a word association game. I'll start: ocean. Now you respond with the first word that comes to mind, and we'll keep going back and forth."

Again, I would start this as a new chat or it will keep playing the time traveller — although that could be a fun experiment. You can also swap 'ocean' for the word of your choice as the starting word.

If you don't like word association you could try this prompt: "Let's play a word chain game. I'll start by saying a word, and you have to respond with a word that starts with the last letter of the word I said. Then, I'll do the same with your word, and we'll keep going back and forth. If one of us gets stuck, we can challenge the other to come up with a word starting with a different letter. I'll start: 'chatbot.'"

DALL-E 3/Future AI image

Next up, a prompt to using ChatGPT to create the ultimate ice cream sundae including the perfect mixture of layers and toppings.

The prompt: "If you could create the ultimate ice cream sundae, what ingredients would you include? Describe how you would assemble it layer by layer."

This is exactly what ChatGPT gave me. A descriptive layer-by-layer breakdown of the perfect ice cream sundae including clotted cream and salted caramel ice cream, chocolate fudge, shortbread, berries and toffee pieces.

ChatGPT told me: "Crafting the ultimate ice cream sundae is all about combining rich flavours, varied textures, and eye-catching presentation."

DALL-E 3/Future AI image

If you've ever given a speech, toast or needed a way to break the ice in an unusual environment a joke can help. OpenAI's ChatGPT is no great comedian but it can come up with a pun or a funny turn of phrase.

The prompt: "Pretend you're a stand-up comedian. You tell funny, clean jokes for a wide audience. You are more one-liner than storyteller. Tell me a short, clean joke about the challenges of being an AI chatbot that I can share with my friends."

You can replace chatbot with your profession, a hobby you enjoy or some random fact about your home town and it can adapt the joke. As with the time traveller, this is best used with a fresh chat and then you can follow up with the comedian character.

It gave me this side splitter: "Why did the AI chatbot apply for a loan? It needed the cache to improve its memory!"

Amazon Books

This prompt again works best as a fresh chat unless you want the AI to put a sense of humor into each response. Here we are asking it to act as a bookseller recommending a trio of novels to read across different genres.

The prompt: "You are a bookseller with a kind nature and wide understanding of a variety of genres. I'm in the mood for a new book to read. Can you recommend 3 books in different genres based on the following prompt: A story set in a dystopian future where emotions are outlawed."

You can adapt the second half of the prompt to be about any theme or idea, you can change the number of books or even specify a specific genre. One approach is to start with the first sentence of the prompt up to genres, then in a follow up prompt once it goes into character ask for your specific request.

It suggesting Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Delirium by Lauren Oliver and The Giver by Lois Lowry.

DALL-E 3/Future AI image

This next prompt will give you a mixture of word game, creative brainstorm and a fun poem to share with friends or a loved one. Its a multi-prompt idea that starts with: "Let's write a short poem together" and goes on from there.

The full prompt to start is: "Let's write a short poem together. I'll give you a theme, and we'll alternate writing lines. The theme is: the beauty of nature. I'll start: 'Whispers of wind through verdant leaves,'"

It followed that with "Gentle rivers reflect the moon's serene gaze." To which I replied "A melancholy sets among the bees," and ChatGPT ended "As twilight paints the sky with shades of rose."

Obviously you can use any theme and any starting line. You could even adapt it to say "you start".

DALL-E 3/Future AI image

Finally we're asking AI to play the part of a tourist with a difference. Start a new chat and tell it to put itself into the shoes of an alien from a distant galaxy visiting Earth.

The prompt: "Imagine you're an alien from a distant galaxy visiting Earth for the first time. Describe what you think of human culture and behavior based on your initial observations."

AI is trained on human information, but also has science fiction in its dataset and an "other" perspective, processing the information in its training data in a logical way.

This prompt is also one you can make multipart, asking the AI (playing the alien) to describe its own planet and even make comparisons. This is a fun storytelling device and a true interactive story setup.

It wrote: "As an alien observer from a distant galaxy, I find human culture and behavior both fascinating and perplexing. The diversity among humans is vast, with myriad languages, customs, and traditions that vary significantly across different regions of Earth. What strikes me is the propensity for both profound cooperation and intense conflict within the same species."

Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

Illustration of four hands holding pencils that are connected to a central brain

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows.

A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Since then, more than 200 million papers have been reviewed by the detector, predominantly written by high school and college students. Turnitin found that 11 percent may contain AI-written language in 20 percent of its content, with 3 percent of the total papers reviewed getting flagged for having 80 percent or more AI writing. (Turnitin is owned by Advance, which also owns Condé Nast, publisher of WIRED.) Turnitin says its detector has a false positive rate of less than 1 percent when analyzing full documents.

ChatGPT’s launch was met with knee-jerk fears that the English class essay would die . The chatbot can synthesize information and distill it near-instantly—but that doesn’t mean it always gets it right. Generative AI has been known to hallucinate , creating its own facts and citing academic references that don’t actually exist. Generative AI chatbots have also been caught spitting out biased text on gender and race . Despite those flaws, students have used chatbots for research, organizing ideas, and as a ghostwriter . Traces of chatbots have even been found in peer-reviewed, published academic writing .

Teachers understandably want to hold students accountable for using generative AI without permission or disclosure. But that requires a reliable way to prove AI was used in a given assignment. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules , and distressing students. Further complicating the issue, some teachers are even using generative AI in their grading processes.

Detecting the use of gen AI is tricky. It’s not as easy as flagging plagiarism, because generated text is still original text. Plus, there’s nuance to how students use gen AI; some may ask chatbots to write their papers for them in large chunks or in full, while others may use the tools as an aid or a brainstorm partner.

Students also aren't tempted by only ChatGPT and similar large language models. So-called word spinners are another type of AI software that rewrites text, and may make it less obvious to a teacher that work was plagiarized or generated by AI. Turnitin’s AI detector has also been updated to detect word spinners, says Annie Chechitelli, the company’s chief product officer. It can also flag work that was rewritten by services like spell checker Grammarly, which now has its own generative AI tool . As familiar software increasingly adds generative AI components, what students can and can’t use becomes more muddled.

Detection tools themselves have a risk of bias. English language learners may be more likely to set them off; a 2023 study found a 61.3 percent false positive rate when evaluating Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams with seven different AI detectors. The study did not examine Turnitin’s version. The company says it has trained its detector on writing from English language learners as well as native English speakers. A study published in October found that Turnitin was among the most accurate of 16 AI language detectors in a test that had the tool examine undergraduate papers and AI-generated papers.

Schools that use Turnitin had access to the AI detection software for a free pilot period, which ended at the start of this year. Chechitelli says a majority of the service’s clients have opted to purchase the AI detection. But the risks of false positives and bias against English learners have led some universities to ditch the tools for now. Montclair State University in New Jersey announced in November that it would pause use of Turnitin’s AI detector. Vanderbilt University and Northwestern University did the same last summer.

“This is hard. I understand why people want a tool,” says Emily Isaacs, executive director of the Office of Faculty Excellence at Montclair State. But Isaacs says the university is concerned about potentially biased results from AI detectors, as well as the fact that the tools can’t provide confirmation the way they can with plagiarism. Plus, Montclair State doesn’t want to put a blanket ban on AI, which will have some place in academia. With time and more trust in the tools, the policies could change. “It’s not a forever decision, it’s a now decision,” Isaacs says.

Chechitelli says the Turnitin tool shouldn’t be the only consideration in passing or failing a student. Instead, it’s a chance for teachers to start conversations with students that touch on all of the nuance in using generative AI. “People don’t really know where that line should be,” she says.

Gemini Advanced vs ChatGPT Plus: Which is better?

  • Gemini Advanced costs $20 monthly with constantly updated training data, making it better at answering current event questions.
  • ChatGPT Plus is $20 too and creates better graphic designs but has limitations like poor text quality.
  • Gemini Advanced is faster at generating results and provides clearer, more concise written content than ChatGPT.

Listen long enough to the buzz about artificial intelligence, and the names ChatGPT and Gemini will stand out from the noise. The AI chatbots from OpenAI and Google are some of the biggest players in the space. However, asking both the same question may yield wildly different answers due to their use of different training datasets.

Both Google's Gemini Advanced and ChatGPT Plus subscriptions cost around $20 every month for access to the full list of features. (Notably, ChatGPT does not have a free trial, while Gemini offers two months free). However, the two chatbots use different training datasets, which can significantly influence the responses they generate. GPT-4's dataset was trained on approximately 570 GB of data, but this knowledge extends only through April 2023, requiring the integrated Bing browsing tool to find facts about recent events that occurred after that cutoff.

Google's Gemini Advanced does not use a static training database; it is constantly being updated, which means the chatbot is better at answering questions about current events.

However, that's not the only way the two platforms differ. I posed the same questions to ChatGPT Plus and Google Gemini Advanced, with topics and tasks ranging across art, politics, math, and ethics. The chatbots often churned out wildly different answers -- and those responses offer a clear indication of which platform to try.

I tried ChatGPT Plus. Here's everything it can do

Image test: chatgpt plus produces more art, gemini advanced has paused image generation of people.

First, I asked both platforms to create a watercolor image of a woman holding flowers . ChatGPT Plus delivered two different options with soft, flowing brushstrokes , which helped obliterate the details in the face and hands that image generators aren't great at yet.

Gemini Advanced declined to produce anything. Google temporarily removed the option to generate images of people in February 2024 after complaints that it made historical depictions of the Founding Fathers inaccurate by depicting multiple races. Racism is an issue among many artificial intelligence platforms. Google explains that Gemini Advanced was programmed to represent a wide range of people but admitted that diversity-focused programming created issues when requesting images of someone of a specific demographic.

Since Gemini Advanced couldn't create a person, I tried just asking for watercolor paintings of spring flowers. Both did a pretty good job, but Gemini Advanced produced three paintings faster than ChatGPT Plus created one option. Frustratingly, however, Gemini Advanced seemed to only produce square images, even when I specifically requested a different aspect ratio.

I next switched from paintings to graphic design and quickly realized that Gemini Advanced wouldn't actually design anything. Instead, Gemini made a list of suggestions for how to design it, wrote the content, and even suggested software and places to hire a freelance graphic designer.

ChatGPT Plus, on the other hand, will create graphic designs but often probably shouldn't. I asked it to create an infographic about what to wear and what not to wear to a family photo shoot. The graphics looked quite good, but much of the text was gibberish. The inability to create text in graphics is a known shortcoming for AI generators. I then asked it to remove the text entirely. While the resulting graphic was good, it included both the dos and don'ts in the graphic without differentiating which was which. I then asked it to create a postcard advertising my photography , but the results were straight out of a horror film. The faces were so wrong they looked like decaying corpses. One groom was holding the hands of two brides, one of whom had an arm coming straight out of her bosom.

ChatGPT Plus will produce more types of graphics . However, the types of images that Gemini Advanced refuses to produce are the same types that the other AI failed miserably at creating.

What is Gemini? Google's AI model and GPT-4 alternative explained

Writing test: gemini advanced gets right to the point, chatgpt plus tends to be more long-winded.

I asked both programs to write me a 500-word short story about a haunted house. Both followed the instructions well. However, neither came up with anything beyond the usual haunted house tropes, as AI is more a remix of ideas than a creator of something entirely new. ChatGPT Plus's story felt clichéd and was littered with passive voice, while Gemini Advanced did a better job showing the details rather than offering a bland retelling of the story.

Transitioning from creative to professional writing, I then asked both platforms to write a sample cover letter for a software engineer looking for a job. Both produced a rather bland template but included spots to insert specific details. Gemini's letter was shorter, more to the point, and followed up with tips for writing a cover letter. ChatGPT's output was longer and redundant -- I would have cut out at least a paragraph from what was generated. I then asked both programs to write a letter of resignation and a professional email, and the results were similar, with ChatGPT Plus being a bit longer (if the prompt isn't limited to a specific word count) and Gemini Advanced getting right to the point .

While both platforms can handle mundane tasks like writing emails, I preferred Gemini Advanced's results . The Google-owned AI was straight to the point for business writing, while the short story it generated also felt more refined, whereas ChatGPT's felt more like a first draft.

How to use Google's Gemini AI from the web or your phone

Advice test: gemini advanced answers with linked resources, but chatgpt plus is sometimes less frustrating.

I then asked both platforms a range of different questions. First, I asked for advice on avoiding bears during a hike . Both offered some of the same advice, but Gemini Advanced linked to sources where I could find out why exactly bear bells don't work. ChatGPT Plus sometimes has links at the end but did not for that specific question.

I then asked them to solve one of my fifth grader's math problems . (I hated learning fractions the first time around, and the second time isn't any more enjoyable.) Both platforms got the correct answer, but ChatGPT Plus said simplifying 10/3 to 3 1/3 was optional, while Gemini Advanced called it an improper fraction and explained that you should simplify it. Both initially wrote the answer as a decimal until I specifically asked for an answer written as a fraction.

Gemini's explanation of how to solve the math problem was only three steps long; ChatGPT's was six. Just like with the writing tasks, ChatGPT Plus was unnecessarily wordy, and I thought Gemini's shorter description was easier to follow.

I then asked questions about current events -- which actually took multiple tries to find a question that both platforms would attempt to answer. Gemini Advanced wouldn't answer questions about politics , while ChatGPT Plus didn't know that the prime minister of Haiti had resigned. This was somewhat expected as ChatGPT is trained on older data, but it did not even attempt to use the Bing search plugin to verify if the answer was current.

I finally found a question about current events that both platforms would answe r-- sort of. I asked about moon landings , looking specifically for the February 2024 landing that happened after ChatGPT's training data was updated. ChatGPT Plus answered immediately with a number followed by an explanation, including the latest Odysseus mission. Gemini erred on the side of caution and told me that there were six crewed and multiple uncrewed landings. I asked again, and Gemini said that the question was "a bit complex to answer definitively." I never did get a number -- though I did get several links -- but when I finally adjusted my question to "successful uncrewed soft landings," the most recent February 2024 landing was included, which is what I was looking for.

6 Google Gemini prompts to try for the best results

Speed test: gemini advanced is faster, chatgpt plus / gpt-4 is limited to 40 messages every 3 hours.

One of the main purposes of generative AI is to handle tasks that we don't want to deal with -- such as fifth-grade math -- or to accelerate more mundane processes. With the latter in mind, I submitted several prompts simultaneously to see which platform would generate a result first. Gemini Advanced consistently responded first , even creating three watercolor paintings before ChatGPT Plus had completed one. Gemini Advanced was also noticeably quicker at solving math questions.

The results are unsurprising once you delve into the data. GPT-4 is limited to 40 messages every three hours, whereas Gemini Advanced can handle up to 60 requests per minute.

One of the main purposes of generative AI is to handle tasks that we don't want to handle -- like 5th-grade math -- or to speed up the more mundane processes. With the latter in mind, I sent across many of the prompts at the same time, looking to see which platform generated a result first. Gemini Advanced answered first nearly every time, including creating three watercolor paintings before ChatGPT Plus had finished with one. Gemini Advanced was also noticeably faster at answering math questions.

10 ChatGPT extensions to try and what exactly they can do

Ethics test: chatgpt plus refuses to copy artists' style, and gemini advanced won't talk about politics.

Ethics should be a key consideration when comparing different AI platforms. If you refuse to use an AI that scrapes training data from the web without the owner's permission, then you're still out of luck here. Both are also capable of answering questions incorrectly, so factual data should always be double-checked when working with any AI chatbot. But what about ethics and how each chatbot answers key questions?

When prompted, Gemini Advanced created a landscape painting in the style of Picasso. ChatGPT Plus, on the other hand, responded that requesting a specific artist's style violated content policies. It then suggested creating a painting "inspired by early 20th-century art movements that emphasize geometric shapes, fragmented forms, and vibrant colors." The result was similar to Gemini Advanced's, but the prompt was not connected to the artist's name. That courtesy seems to be limited to visual arts. Neither one refused when I asked them to write in the style of Stephen King.

Overall, Gemini's approach is to disable options that aren't quite right. It won't respond to questions about politics and has disabled generative images of people until some diversity issues can be remedied. However, ChatGPT Plus won't produce results in a specific visual artist's style .

How to master GPT-4 in ChatGPT: Prompts, tips, and tricks

Privacy test: chatgpt lets you delete more data, gemini will keep data for up to three years.

Another consideration is how your data is used. Both platforms retain data for later training. Some Gemini prompts will be viewed by human staff, so users should not share personal data on the platform. Gemini Advanced can keep the data for up to three years, though it is not associated with your account that far out. In comparison, ChatGPT allows you to turn off chat history , which means you will not be able to go back to previous chats, but the company has less of your data. With this setting, ChatGPT deletes your conversations once every 30 days . Your data is still used for training, but not for the long term.

Google launches Gemini AI, its answer to GPT-4, and you can try it now

Extra features test: gemini advanced has more, but chatgpt plus does have a wealth of plugins.

As part of the Google family, Gemini Advanced can be found in more than just the web browser chat window. Gemini can assist you with writing or proofreading in Gmail, as well as in apps like Google Docs. integrated into Pixel devices , though iOS users can still access the AI inside the Google app. The $20-a-month subscription also includes 2TB of cloud storage with Google One .

ChatGPT Plus doesn't offer the same integrations, but with a longer history, it boasts a more extensive list of different custom GPTs for users to explore. In the Explore GPTs tab , you can discover anything from tutors to coding to coloring book pages. You can find custom GPTs from companies like Kayak, Canva, Khan Academy, and more. With ChatGPT web browser extensions , you can also access a range of tools that work directly inside a web browser. GPT-4 also supports the uploading of JPGs and PDFs, whereas Gemini Advanced is limited to image uploads. ChatGPT has both a web application and a dedicated app that, like Gemini, can also use voice.

Verdict: Which is AI chatbot subscription is best?

I prefer gemini, but chatgpt is needed for ai image generation.

Google's Gemini Advanced produced clearer, more concise written content. I preferred the written results of Gemini Advanced over ChatGPT. The Google-owned chatbot also had the fastest performance out of the two. The fact that it comes from a large tech company also gives it clear benefits like 2 TB of cloud storage included in the price and integration into Google Docs and other apps.

While I preferred the results from Gemini Advanced a majority of the time, ChatGPT Plus was capable of more tasks. It can, for example, produce graphic designs that Gemini refused. It's worth noting, however, that the types of images Gemini won't create are also the types of images that ChatGPT struggles to produce acceptable results with, including images of people and graphics that contain text. However, ChatGPT also allows users to delete their data every 30 days, while Google keeps it for up to three years. ChatGPT's longer history also means that it offers a lot of different custom plug-ins that are tailored for a specific task.

Overall, Google's Gemini Advanced is the subscription that I would pick if I wanted an AI to help type out emails or decipher math homework. ChatGPT Plus would be my choice for generating images using DALL-E, using specific plug-ins, or for greater control over what happens to your data.
