How to make a good Behance case

Behance has over 24 million members, they generate thousands of cases daily. Standing out is no easy task, but here are some handy tips.

As they say, “It’s what shows up on the surface that counts.” Having a good design case is not enough. You should also wrap it in a flashy package to make it pop. How about we get into it?

Content is queen

Content should be structured, understandable, and attention-grabbing. Let’s go step by step.

Introduction

First, immerse the audience into the context of the case. If you just post the result as it is, it might not draw much interest in your artwork.

  • For a personal case, you can describe your idea. What inspired you to create the design? What goal did you set for yourself?
  • For a business case, you can introduce your client and explain the project’s objective.

Keep it short. A few sentences or an animated explainer would be enough to set a scene. If you overdo it, you may only set boredom. We don’t need that, right?

TANG! | Inspiration Archiving App

Storytelling

Your work process is golden, show it! Tell a story, visual or textual. Add sketches, wireframes, and storyboards. There is a special genre on Behance called Making of , you can find inspiration there.

Presentation

Draw attention to specific details. Everything works as long as it keeps the scroll going. Try different layouts and compositions to highlight the essential parts.

If you have too many static images, animate them.

Different types of visuals keep the audience engaged, demonstrate your design skills, and inspire others.

Formats and tools for visuals

Use JPG only. Of course, you can upload PNG, but it more likely crashes cause of the Behance compressing algorithm. The optimal image width is 1,400 px, Behance will compress wider media. Upload your pictures one by one, not in a batch. This way pictures will upload faster and the page won’t crash.

Video and animations

You can use different video formats . But the autoplay function will be available only for YouTube or Vimeo embedded videos. To use it, click “share” and generate embedding code.

Embedding a video from Vimeo

Note: you can use a video with autoplay on Behance once per page. If you need it more than once, use GIFs . Keep in mind that GIFs reduce quality. From our experience, the autoplay function works better on Vimeo videos.

Looney illustrations by Icons8

You can integrate 3D models in your Behance case with Sketchfab. Register an account there, embed the code of your model, and insert it as media. This is what it will look like:

NIU by Taranvir Singh

Figma projects

To integrate a Figma prototype, get its embed code and paste into Behance. Boom. Your audience can play around with your design. Feels professional now, does it?

Disney+, But Better by Andre Carioca

Long enough!

Behance is all about scrolling through. Anyway, make sure that it does not take forever. We recommend making the Behance project from 10 to 15 thousand pixels long: fair to tell your story but not too lengthy to make the audience sick of it.

How to get on the Best of Behance page

Best of Behance is what the moderation team selects manually. It is the main page of Behance and each of its categories. There’s a reason to strive to get there: it is the place where your potential clients most likely will notice you.

Project cover

  • If you want to pinpoint the details of the specific part of your project, make the key element your preview.
  • If your case involves characters you can use them.
  • Make a collage if you want to showcase several parts of your design.

Networking on Behance

If you have a personal account, use the same name and profile picture as you use on your other social media. If you’re working on behalf of a company, use your brand identity. Comment and rate other designers’ works to get more views for your page and cases.

Example of Behance good comments

Dont’s

Example of bad Behance comment

  • Pay attention to the content. Make it structured, interactive, and catchy.
  • Highlight key ideas in the preview.
  • Do not make it longer than 15,000 px.
  • Comment on other users’ cases with a real point in it

And don’t ever get discouraged if you still haven’t made it to Best of Behance. Some cases get noticed by moderators after months or even years after posting. Maybe you need to take it easy and wait for some time.

How To Build a Better Behance Case Study

It has been more than three years since STRV designer Ales Nesetril joined the awesome Behance community of designers and creative types. He now wants to share his knowledge to help other designers improve how they build Behance case studies.

behance logo case study

He wrote down eight of the most important tips based on his own experience after publishing more than 15 projects and the observations he made as a member of the community. Let's jump straight into them now.

1. A Good Case Study Takes Time##

Don't expect to finish your next project over night if you plan to go big. I tried it myself and failed. Multiple times. Usually I got lost in the content, because I wanted to try so many ideas at once, but they never played well together. I ended up with sleepless nights thinking about what I should do first and how the final version will look. Try to take small steps instead. And you'll not be scared of the big steps later on.

If you really want to show your work properly try to approach your case study more responsibly. Don't do it just because you have to show something quickly. You'll miss an opportunity. I often compare building a case study to designing the whole project all over again. I mean seriously:

  • Start with research/inspiration
  • Select content you want to show/highlight
  • Sketch a few layouts or structure on paper
  • Create a wireframe
  • Work with the final designs and play with it's visual presence
  • Plan your publication (plan your own small social media campaign)
  • Maximize the reach (additional blog post/article/unused parts…)

2. Combine Multiple Media Formats##

You don’t necessary need to show just final screens from your app or all subpages. You can combine everything together and try to tell the story of how your project was built. Use first sketches, “making of” videos, GIF animations, unused experiments, even internal documents, reports, research data, behind the scenes photos and so on. Just anything that has some value for other designers to show your process.

“Everyone is super curious and want to know how the hell you designed this thing. Give them what they want. Get them inspired for their next project.”

Branding Case Study

Case Study: Referanza. Logo Design

Fresh case study telling the details of logo design process for an innovative marketing startup referanza. full path of logo creation packed with illustrations..

Logo is definitely the basic element for efficient branding and marketing. Its design, taken seriously and based on user research, analysis, talent and design laws can become a solid basis for successful communication of the brand with its buyers, customers and users, that is why it needs careful professional approach.

Here in Tubik Studio we have felt the nuances of branding and logo design. You probably remember detailed cases of design process for  Ribbet , Passfold , Tubik , Saily ,  SwiftyBeaver  and Andre logos shared here in the blog. Today we would like to continue this set with a new detailed case study, showing logo design process for Referanza . This case was assigned for Tubik graphic designer Ildar Aleksandrov.

Logo design for an innovative marketing startup  Referanza .

Adobe Illustrator

The clients represented a startup based on the idea of enhanced marketing and business growth: Referanza helps businesses improve customer satisfaction and turn happy customers into referrals. The task set for a designer was to create a logo which feels modern and friendly and signals on customer happiness and growth. The primary target audience was defined as young marketing professionals and online entrepreneurs. General task on branding design solutions was to get a fun and fresh look for a brand.

After user research and marketing research, the designer worked over several stylistic directions. As for the color palette, the search didn’t take long because the clients primarily set their preferences on light and airy design within white and blue shades. So, the main search was focused on shapes and imagery. At this stage, the clients were provided with four stylistic versions, three of which presented various approaches to lettermark while the fourth featured a mascot character. All the versions were based on circular geometric approach. The logo versions were made monochrome applying flat style of graphic design.

The first option showed the stylized version of the initial letter “R” combined with the image of a target card as a symbol of success.

The second variant moved away from the letter concept and featured a friendly positive mascot as a part of branding.

referanza logo design tubik

The next option offered the lettermark accomplished with a more classic stylistic approach and inscribed in the colored circle.

referanza logo design tubik

The fourth variant featured another lettermark which looked a bit bolder and more massive and had a star inscribed in the top part as an image usually associated with high achievements and success.

referanza logo design tubik

In addition, all the versions were supported with stylistic variants of lettering for the brand name.

referanza logo design tubik

Having discussed all the set, the clients agreed upon the direction of lettermark rather than the slogan. The version with bold and massive “R” was chosen as a basis and the stage of the creative search was continued around this concept. The clients wanted to see more prominent and clear sign of communication setting the link with the startup activity and philosophy. So, the designer offered another option for combining the letter with a bubble speech easily associated with communication.

referanza logo design

Lettering for the full name of the brand was accomplished originally for the brand without capital letters to feel balanced when used together with the logo image. Rounded corners, enhancing readability, also added some original look and consistency to design of both parts of the logo combination.

referanza logo design tubik

Once the final version was approved, it was carefully tested in different resolutions, on multiple devices and surfaces to ensure that logo works effectively for various environments. The logo keeps harmony and consistency in both horizontal and vertical placement of its elements.

The final version of the logo was also tested on smoothly colored surfaces to provide the brand sign with marketing flexibility.
