How-To Geek
How to create custom cover pages in microsoft word.
A great cover page draws in readers.
Quick Links
How to add a ready-to-use cover page to your word document, how to create a custom cover page in microsoft word.
A great cover page draws in readers. If you use Microsoft Word, you're in luck, because Word has ready to use cover pages. But did you know that Word also lets you create custom cover pages? Here's how to use both.
Word includes some cover page templates you can insert and then customize a bit if you need a quick cover page for your document.
To find them, switch over to the "Insert" tab on Word's Ribbon and then click the "Cover Page" button. (If your window isn't maximized, you might see a "Pages" button instead. Click that to show the "Cover Page" button.)
On the drop-down menu, click the cover page you want to use.
You can now add your document title, subtitle, date, and other information, as well as change the design up a bit if you want.
Creating a cover page from a template is easy enough, but if you don't like any of the built-in designs, you can create your own. You can do this on an existing document, but it's easiest to start with a blank document. We're going to be saving the custom cover page so that you can quickly insert it into an existing document anyway.
You can create your cover page using pretty much any of Word's tools. You can add a background color, picture, or texture . You can also position those elements how you want and even apply Word's text wrapping tools to them. Make it look however you want.
When it comes to content, you have a couple of options. You can just type the text you want, but that wouldn't make it much of a template unless you want the same text on the cover page every time you use it.
Instead, you can use Word's Quick Parts feature to add document properties to the document. To do that, switch over to the "Insert" tab and then click the "Quick Parts" button.
On the drop-down menu, point to the "Document Property" submenu, and you'll see a bunch of different properties you can insert into your document: author, title, company, publish date, and so on. Go ahead and insert whichever properties you want to appear on your title page.
When you're done, you'll have several fields on your page. When you insert your cover page into a document later on, those fields are populated with the actual properties from the document (and you can also edit them on the fly if you want).
They're super plain to start with, but you can treat them like any other text in Word by applying styles and formatting, centering them on the page---whatever. Here, we've centered them on the page, applied the Title style to the title, shifted things down on the page a bit, and inserted a filigree illustration for a little flair. It's not the prettiest cover page around, but it's a good working example.
Now that we've got our cover page the way we want it, it's time to create a cover page template out of it.
First, select everything in the document (that's why we recommend starting this in a blank document) by pressing Ctrl+A. Next, head back to the "Insert" tab and then click that "Cover Page" button again.
This time, choose the "Save Selection to Cover Page Gallery" command from the drop-down menu.
In the window that opens, give your cover page a name and fill out a brief description if you want. Click "OK" when you're done.
Now when you open the "Cover Page" drop-down menu in the future, you'll see your new cover page template in the "General" section. Click to insert it just like you would one of Word's built-in cover pages.
And that's it. Creating custom cover pages for your document is pretty easy once you know where to look. While you're at it, learn a few more quick tips on putting together professional-looking documents in Word .

Whether you're decorating project file covers or the borders of pages, there are lots of fun ways to make your page stand out. Use colorful markers, pens, or pencils to create illustrations, and think up interesting symbols or patterns to use. It's a good idea to plan out what you'll be drawing ahead of time using a pencil so that you can easily erase any mistakes.
Decorating Project File Covers
- For example, if your project is about how to grow certain types of flowers, you might draw these flowers on your project cover as a decoration.
- If your project is about a topic that you can’t easily illustrate, you can simply make the wording more decorative or create a simple pattern with different colors.
- Find extra materials you can use in case you mess up.
- Visit a craft store or big box store to find lots of options for craft materials.
- For example, use a ruler and pencil to draw lines and shapes so that they’re the perfect size, or sketch your illustrations and wording with a pencil before using more permanent markers or pens.
- You can plan out your cover on a blank sheet of paper, or go straight to the actual cover and use the pencil to start lightly marking where things will go.
- Scrapbook paper is a great paper to use for decorations, as it comes in lots of different patterns and is easy to cut.
- You can also find textured paper from a craft store, if desired.
- Use a simple white glue to get the paper to stick to the page, or use tape.
- You can also purchase stickers that are things like flowers, vehicles, or animals to put on your cover page to illustrate the topic.
- Use wrapping paper, old paper bags, or pieces of fabric on your page.
- Print and cut out images to glue onto the paper, if desired.
- If you're using glue, let it dry fully before moving your page so that it doesn't get ruined.
Decorating the Borders of Pages
- Make sure you leave a bit of space between the border and your text, such as 0.25 in (0.64 cm).
- For example, if you want a border with a thickness of 1 in (2.5 cm) around the entire page, you can use the ruler to measure this width and then draw a line parallel to each side of the paper to show you where to decorate.
- Use colored pencils or skinny markers to get more detail in your drawings, and consider sketching the border lightly in pencil first.
- Other markings might include polka dots, dashes, or triangles.
- Create a border of small animals like dogs, cats, and birds.
- Take into consideration the theme of your project before picking a pattern.
- For example, create a border of blue, green, and yellow smiley faces by repeating the sequence over and over again.
- Draw a red rose, a yellow daisy, and a purple tulip along the border in a pattern.
- For example, draw a detailed tree with colorful leaves in one corner using different colors like red, yellow, brown, and green, and then draw small leaves around the rest of the border.
- Draw a detailed, colorful butterfly in one corner of the page and then draw black dashes along the rest of the border.
- Buy animal stickers, such as small cats, dogs, and birds, to place around the border.
- Find a sticker sheet with lots of different smiley faces to create an even border.
- Let the wet glue dry completely before moving the page, and tear off the painter's tape carefully to reveal a straight glitter border.
- Use a small paint brush to spread the glue out evenly.
- Use stamps in different shapes or images for a variety of pictures, or use different colors of ink to design a colorful border.
- Try to use stamps that are the same in size so that your border comes out even.

Assignment Cover Pages
Assignment cover page is the first page of an assignment. When you hold an assignment, the first page that you will see is the cover page. It is also called the title page. An assignment cover page includes the name of the institution, the title of the assignment, the name of the student and student’s ID. The assignment cover page is helpful in identifying what the assignment is about and which student submitted it.
Many students submit assignments to instructors, and instructors are usually teaching more than one subject. Therefore, without an assignment cover page, it would be difficult for the instructor to manage and sort out different assignments.
When there is an assignment cover page, instructors can easily sort out the assignments and grade them. Even the students submitting multiple assignments on the same day could end up submitting the wrong assignment if the assignments didn’t have a cover page.
Another important reason for having assignment cover pages is that this is part of training students to submit work professionally. An assignment cover page shows professionalism in submitting work. When students are trained for professional work, they are better equipped at succeeding in their jobs. Thus, professors and instructors usually ask students to create cover pages for their assignments so that the students develop this habit early in their academic life.
The assignment cover page usually includes the name of the institution, title of the assignment, name of the student, student id, date of submission. In some cases, the title page may also mention the instructor name. Usually, the title page is not page numbered.
Some courses might also require the students to format the assignment cover pages using popular referencing styles. For example, there is a particular format to make an assignment cover page using APA or MLA referencing styles. In some cases, professors may also issue detailed instructions on how to format an assignment cover page. These instructions may include font style, font size, text color, page borders, and the information that must be stated on the cover page along with a particular order.
Cover pages are required in several situations:
- When submitting a project report
- When submitting a research proposal
- When submitting a dissertation
- When making a report that is longer than 2-3 pages
- When the assignment instructions require an assignment cover page
- When the professor is handling more than one subject and assignments may be erroneously sorted
Assignment cover pages are very useful and can be created in MS Word or Adobe. MS Word software allows pictures and text to be used on the cover page. Students may also use headers and footers, page borders and other features in MS Word to create a nice cover page. You can even use the popular heading styles given in MS Word.
If you do not have the time or energy to create a cover page, you may use cover pages available on our website. We offer editable cover page templates that you can easily download and customize. Browse through our specially designed assignment cover pages and save your time and effort.

Keeping track of all your notes for school can get confusing if you’re disorganized. Luckily, creating a custom cover page for the front of your notebook will make separating your work easier, and it’s a fun and inexpensive project you can do to add some personality to your school materials. With just a few basic art supplies or a simple computer photo editor, you can create a notebook cover page that says “you” and makes doing your homework a little more interesting.
- You can decorate the first page of a notebook to use as your cover page or draw directly onto the outside of the notebook. If you decide to decorate the first page, it may be helpful to color-coordinate your notebooks so that you know which subject goes with each color.
- Designing your cover page on a computer will be easiest if you use a 3-ring binder since the printed cover page can slip directly into the front of the binder.
- Make sure you're also stocked on notebook paper if you're using a 3-ring binder so you'll be ready to go once your cover page is done.
- Listing your homeroom teacher or locker number will help other students return a lost notebook.
- Use drawings and pictures that fit with the subject of your notebook to give your studies a visual element. If you're designing a notebook for your chemistry class, for instance, sketch a few beakers and flasks or a microscope to go along with the chemistry motif.
- As long as it’s not against the rules, you could even write down formulas or other useful tips on your notebook cover to help you remember them. Putting the Pythagorean theorem on a math notebook, for instance, will aid you in learning the theorem so that it’s instantly recognizable to you.
- Use your own supplies, or see about borrowing them from your school’s art class.
- Use foam craft letters for a cool new way to display your name on your notebook.
- Be careful while gluing decorations onto your notebook and make sure you only use as much as you need. Otherwise the glue can bleed through and make the paper soggy, or you might even accidentally glue pages together.
- Word processors make it easy to format text the way you want it and add pictures to go with it, while one advantage of photo editing programs is that they give you greater control over how to alter pictures and let you drag, layer and angle bits of text for better customization.
- You don't have to limit yourself to just one method—try designing a cover page with the necessary basic information on your computer, then printing it out and finish decorating it by hand.
- Don’t use photos that are graphic or offensive. Remember, your notebook is part of your scholastic materials.
- Fonts like Impact, Comic Sans and Wingdings come preloaded on most word processors programs and are more playful than ordinary professional fonts.
- If you enjoy writing creatively, challenge yourself by coming up with a personalized slogan to act as an introduction for what you'll find in your notebook.
- Taping or stapling around the edge of the cover page will hold it in place and allow it to be changed out at a later time with little difficulty, while glue will hold better but is messier to work with and isn’t easily removed.
- Be careful: watch your fingers while you’re stapling.

About This Article
Making a cover page for your notebook is a fun way to personalize it and make finding your work easier. Write the subject of the notebook in big text at the top of your cover page. Then, write your name, your teacher’s name, and your locker number if you have one, so people can easily return your notebook if you lose it. Decorate the page however you want. You can draw pictures and patterns around the page with colored pens, place stickers, or glue sequins to bring it to life. Alternatively, design your cover page on a computer, print it out, and stick it to your notebook. Just make sure you set the page size to match your notebook.
