Prospective applicants can apply to the Ph.D. Program in Economics using the following options that can be found on the  Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences  website.  Please be aware the application deadline for the Economics Department Ph.D. program is December 1, 2023.

Official score reports must be submitted for all required examinations. Ask the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to report your scores to the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, code 3987.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  The General Test is required of all applicants. Applicants should take the GRE no later than November. Applicants are strongly encouraged to register early to schedule test dates and times. For registration forms, test dates, test centers, and general information contact  www.gre.org(link is external) . 

Test of English as a Foreign Language.  The TOEFL is required of all applicants whose native language is not English.  This requirement is waived only for applicants who have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction. NOTE:  1 or 2 year MA degree does not qualify for the waiver.  If you do not qualify for a waiver but have taken the TOEFL within the last two years you will need to have your TOEFL scores released to us (code 3987). If your scores can no longer be released, you will need to take the test. The test should be taken as early as possible to ensure that your scores are received in time to be incorporated in your file.  Normally TOEFL scores will not be released if they are older than two years. If you took the TOEFL before and ETS will release those scores then you should no have to retake the examination.

International English Language Test System (IELTS).  You may substitute IELTS for TOEFL.

Test of Spoken English (TSE).  All international applicants who accept offers of admission to the Ph.D. program and whose native language is not English are strongly encouraged to present scores on the Test of Spoken English by the time of enrollment in the fall. The TSE is administered in the United States and abroad. For further information check the  www.toefl.org(link is external)  web site. Students who do not demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English may be retested and/or asked to take courses in English for speakers of other languages. A high level of proficiency is required for students to serve as teaching fellows.

Doctoral and master’s degrees. Students may enter the Graduate Economics Program after earning a bachelors degree (or the equivalent) or a master’s degree. The Master of Philosophy is awarded to students who complete all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation. The Doctor of Philosophy is awarded upon acceptance of the doctoral dissertation. The Economics Department does not accept students into a terminal master’s program. The Economic Growth Center offers a one-year MA program in International and Development Economics.

Full-time and Part-time Study.  Doctoral students are expected to devote their full energies to course work and preparation for the qualifying examinations in the first years, and dissertation research and writing in the final years of graduate study. There is no part-time study available to applicants to the Department of Economics.

Nondegree Study.  Qualified individuals who wish to study at the graduate level but not pursue a degree may be admitted to the Division of Special Registration (DSR) as “special students.” Admission to this program is for one term or one year only and carries with it no commitment for further study. These students are not eligible for financial aid or loans. Applicants interested should apply in the same fashion as for full-time study.

Interdisciplinary Study.  Students may apply for admission to only one department or program within the Graduate School per year. Students may take one or more courses in a related department, and are often advised by faculty members from more than one department during their dissertation research. Students in the Graduate School, may, with permission, take advantage of course or research opportunities in Yale College and in the professional schools.

Joint-degree Programs.  The Department of Economics offers a joint J.D./Ph.D. degree with the Yale Law School. Students must apply to and be admitted to the Yale Law School independently of the Graduate School. Applicants may apply to both schools at the same time or they may enter one school and apply to the second during their first year of study. A separate application is required for each school, and each makes its own admission decision. Students who apply simultaneously to two schools should indicate that they are doing so on both applications. Transfer Students.  The Yale Graduate School does not admit transfer students. The presumption is that students who receive a Yale doctoral degree do their studies at Yale. Students currently enrolled in a doctoral program elsewhere who wish to apply to a Yale doctoral program may do so through the normal admissions procedure. They must meet all the application requirements, including the deadline for submission. Some very successful students have entered the Yale program in this way. Such students may petition the Economics Department and Graduate School to waive a portion of the Ph.D. course requirement (normally a maximum of three courses) in recognition of previous graduate-level work done at Yale or elsewhere. All other requirements, including the comprehensive examination, the economic history requirement, the oral examination, and the econometrics paper, must be completed at Yale. Students who enter the program from another doctoral program receive the full six-year financial aid package.

Those interested in transferring to Yale might consider the Exchange Scholars Program as an alternative. At participating institutions, students may petition their own schools to enroll full-time at Yale for a term or for an academic year as exchange scholars. Participating universities include Berkeley, Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, MIT, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Stanford.

Further Graduate School Information.  A comprehensive description of academic rules and regulations of the Yale Graduate School will be made available to students when they are registered. The Programs and Policies booklet may be found on the Internet at the  Graduate School  website.

Length of Study.  Students are expected to complete the requirements for the degree in six years of registration. The first two years are generally spent taking courses full time; the third is spent preparing a dissertation prospectus within workshops and completing all requirements except the dissertation; the remaining years are spent pursuing and writing up a work of original research. The average length of time required to complete the program is five years. A small percentage finish in four years, although students are guaranteed registration for 6 years in which to finish their degree.

Residency Requirement.  Doctoral students in this program are required to be in residence in New Haven for at least three years.

Dissertation.  The doctoral dissertation is the climax of the graduate school experience. Every dissertation makes an original contribution to a student’s field of study by discovering significant new information, achieving a new synthesis of ideas, developing new methods or hypotheses, or applying established methods to new materials. A dissertation also demonstrates the student’s mastery of relevant resources and methods. Students work with two advisers throughout this process.

In the academic year 2023-24 tuition for full-time study is $48,300. This rate is expected to increase in subsequent years. Ph.D. candidates are charged four years of full tuition. Thereafter students are charged a modest continuing registration fee each term until the dissertation is submitted or the terminal date is passed.  For the 2023-24 academic year this fee is $790 per semester.

The Graduate School provides full tuition, health insurance and stipend fellowship for the first six years of study. Normally the Department of Economics provides additional stipend support. There is a combined award policy that applies to students who obtain outside fellowships. This policy gives students a financial incentive to obtain outside awards.

Teaching Fellowships.  Because the faculty considers teaching to be essential to the professional teaching of all doctoral students, they serve as teaching assistants in the third and fourth years of study.

Research Fellowships.  Department faculty often hire students as research assistants either part-time or full-time.  During this academic year there are seven students supported as full-time research assistants where this funding replaces the need to serve as a teaching fellow.  In the summer of 2020, twenty-five students were supported as part-time research assistants for faculty. 

Outside Fellowships.  All applicants for admission are strongly urged to compete for outside fellowships which can be used at Yale. These fellowships are sponsored by both public and private agencies and are often more generous than those awarded by the University. In addition to their financial advantages, distinction is conferred on a student who wins an award. The  McDougal Graduate School Center  maintains a library of fellowship information; incoming students seeking external aid are advised to consult it on arrival in New Haven.

Federal and Non-Federal Student Loans.  Loans administered by the University are available to citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. The types of loans and amounts a student is eligible to borrow are based entirely on financial need as determined by federal formula.

The Yale Department of Physics welcomes applications to our matriculating graduate class of 2024 beginning around August 15th, 2024. The General GRE and Physics GRE scores are Optional for applications received by the December 15, 2023, submission deadline.

We recognize the continuing disruption caused by COVID-19 and that the hardship of taking GREs falls unequally on individual students. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment for all; therefore, we do not require these standardized tests for admission to our program. All applications are reviewed holistically, and preference will not be given to students who do or do not submit GRE scores.

Department of Chemistry

Application process.

Thank you for your interest in pursuing doctoral studies in Chemistry at Yale University. Below is information regarding application deadlines and requirements.

Program Information

Please review the Chemistry section at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Programs and Policies . Note the graduate program at Yale Chemistry is strictly a Ph.D. program. A master’s program is not offered at this time.

Application Requirements

Please note, the  electronic application   to start graduate program for Fall 2025 will be available in mid-August of 2024. 

The application is due December 1, 2024 , along with supplemental information: transcripts, GRE and TOEFL scores, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement of purpose.  Applicants may find the Training in Teaching information helpful as they consider their application .  Note the application can be saved and reopened multiple times before final submission.

Some Ph.D. applicants may be eligible for a  fee waiver . Please review the instructions, eligibility factors, and required documents. We recommend doing this far in advance of the December 1 application deadline.

Once you submit your fee waiver request form, you will receive an email from the GSAS admissions office ( graduate.admissions@yale.edu ) within 2-3 business days indicating if you have been granted a waiver. 

Letters of Recommendation

A minimum of three letters of recommendation is required. These letters should be from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s academic work, intellectual ability, or academic potential for graduate work. The letters should address one’s motivation for conducting research in this field; ability to take initiative, think critically, and engage in experimental design, data acquisition and analysis (if applicable); and perseverance in working towards an academic or research goal. The most effective letters originate from faculty members of the last institution you attended as a full-time student, research advisors in laboratories, or supervisors in work environments. It is generally most beneficial to choose recommenders who know the applicant well and can speak about their performance and approach with concrete examples. Statement of Academic Purpose

This statement of 500 – 1,000 words explains the decision to apply to Yale for graduate study, research interests, and preparation for the intended field/s of study, including prior research and other relevant experiences. This statement gives the admissions committee an idea of who the applicant is, what motivates them for chemistry graduate study, and how Yale’s faculty, research, and resources would contribute to their future goals. A successful personal statement provides a substantive description of prior research, puts background into context, indicates enthusiasm for research at Yale Chemistry, and shows how the candidate would enrich the intellectual community at Yale. Concrete and specific statements are more useful than broad generalities, though, of course, one does not need to know their future career plans in detail.

Personal Narrative

We are dedicated to fostering a community where students with diverse backgrounds and experiences are included and feel they belong. In 300 words or less, tell us about the personal experiences, interests, or perspectives that you would bring to the community at Yale. This narrative should demonstrate your perspectives on diversity, why it is important, and how you have contributed to or will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

GRE (Graduate Record Examination)

For this year’s application, the GRE General is recommended but not required. Scores for these examinations must be officially released to the Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (institution code 3987). These scores are used as components of a holistic evaluation of an applicant’s qualifications, with due consideration of the limitations of the GRE score. More information is available at GSAS’s FAQs . Students from the USA with financial need can apply for the  GRE Fee Reduction Program  or request a Fee Reduction Voucher from  Graduate Academic Support.

Transcripts

A record of the applicant’s academic performance is required for each institution they list in the Prior Study section of the application. This academic record (a scanned copy of a transcript from the institution’s Student Information System Portal, an “issued to student” transcript, or a certified electronic transcript in PDF form) must be uploaded to the online application.

TOEFL or IELTS Academic tests

Students whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic. Scores from the TOEFL examination must be officially released to Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (ETS code 3987). For the IELTS Academic test, please specify Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The address in the IELTS system, is Warner House, 1 Hillhouse Avenue, room 302, New Haven, CT 06511.

The examination results must be officially released to Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The requirement for the TOEFL can be waived only for applicants who will have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, from a university or college where English is the primary language of instruction before matriculation at Yale. Applicants must have studied in residence at the baccalaureate institution for at least three years to receive the waiver.

Admissions Decisions and Campus Visit

Applicants are typically notified of decisions regarding their applications before the end of January. Official notification that a decision has been made is by email from the GSAS only. Actual decisions are posted within the online application only.

Official campus visits for accepted students are held in March. An invitation to attend one of our visiting days will be sent to all accepted students.

Students take foundational PhD-level courses in their areas of specialization, and then choose from a course list that spans the university, drawing from some of the best academic departments in the world.

The program's small size allows senior faculty to take an active role in preparing each student for the job search.

Ph.d. program.

Fields of study include the main areas of statistical theory (with emphasis on foundations, Bayes theory, decision theory, nonparametric statistics), probability theory (stochastic processes, asymptotics, weak convergence), information theory, bioinformatics and genetics, classification, data mining and machine learning, neural nets, network science, optimization, statistical computing, and graphical models and methods.

Doctor of Philosophy

The primary mission of the PhD program is to provide scholars with the disciplinary background and skills required to contribute to the development of our understanding of better ways of measuring, maintaining, and improving the public’s health. Examples of research conducted by PhD students includes but is not limited to: cancer epidemiology, clinical trials, cardiovascular disease, molecular epidemiology, vector-borne diseases, parasitology, mental health epidemiology and HIV/AIDS. Students are encouraged to work with faculty throughout the university since much of the work done in EPH is interdisciplinary.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences .

Select program: "Public Health" and your Concentration: Biostatistics (PhD or MS), Chronic Disease Epidemiology (PhD or MS), Environmental Health Sciences (PhD), Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases (PhD) or Epidemiology Infectious Disease (MS), Health Informatics (MS) Health Policy and Management (PhD) or Social and Behavioral Sciences (PhD).

The GRE and TOEFL code for Yale GSAS is: 3987. A writing sample is not required.

The deadline is December 15th.

PhD Program

All PhD students are guaranteed five years of 12-month stipend and tuition support in the form of YSPH fellowships, teaching fellowships, traineeships and research assistantships. In addition to support for tuition and living costs, students receive a health award to covers the full cost of single-student Yale Health Plan Hospitalization/Specialty Coverage.

Faculty Advisors

PhD applicants are not required to secure a faculty mentor prior to applying to the program.

We expect applicants to provide information in their personal statement about the research they hope to conduct if admitted and to state the faculty in our department whose research aligns with their interests.

Diversity Research Awards

The PhD program in Public Health enhances commitment its PhD students who identify as underrepresented minority students, first-generation college graduates and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by offering research awards to the top candidates admitted to the program. Each year a minimum of two PhD admitted students will be offered $2,000 each for research funds in addition to their financial aid package. Recipients have up to 2 years to spend these funds, which can be used for books, computers, software, conference travel, research travel or research supplies.

This funding is offered upon acceptance into the program. The criteria for the award is:

  • Previous involvement in diversity-related initiatives in their community and/or volunteer activities helping underserved populations.
  • Research interest in serving an underserved population

I am the Director and co-founder of the Yale Pediatric Gender Program (YPGP), an interdisciplinary team that provides services for transgender and gender expansive (TGE) youth and families in Connecticut. The team includes professionals in the fields of psychology, endocrinology, psychiatry, gynecology, reproductive medicine, medical ethics and law. Our mission is to provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary, family-centered care for children, adolescents and young adults questioning their assigned gender and/or seeking gender-affirming consultation and care in a compassionate, respectful and supportive environment. This program is regionally well-regarded, serving clients from all 8 counties in the state, as well as 4 states outside of Connecticut.

My contribution to the educational mission of Yale’s School of Medicine focuses on teaching trainees in clinical and research training programs about (a) trauma-informed care, (b) psychosexual development, and (c) gender development. Teaching occurs through the delivery of clinical services, mentoring of clinical and research trainees, clinical supervision, and lectures offered in graduate courses and topical seminars coordinated by other faculty members. I have been lucky to mentor and supervise many students in the departments of Psychiatry, the Child Study Center, the School of Public Health and the Divinity School during my tenure at Yale.

Recommendations from teachers and counselors

Please ask your teachers and counselors to submit the required forms by the postmark deadlines above whenever possible. The admissions office makes reasonable allowances for teachers and counselors who are unable to meet these deadlines.

Recommended submission dates for financial aid materials:

Single-Choice Early Action: November 1.

QuestBridge National College Match: November 1.

Regular Decision:  February 15. 

There is no strict deadline to apply for financial aid, but applicants are strongly encouraged to submit documents by the dates above. This will help ensure that, if admitted, you will receive a financial aid award letter at the same time as your offer of admission. View a list of required financial aid forms .

Admissions decision notification

Admissions decisions for Single-Choice Early Action candidates will be available online in mid-December. Decisions for Regular Decision candidates will be posted online via the Yale Admissions Status Portal by April 1. Both Early Action and Regular Decision applicants have until May 1 to reply to an offer of admission. Decisions are released exclusively via the Yale Admissions Status Portal .

First-Year Seminar Program

The First-Year Seminar Program provides incoming students with a unique and intimate academic experience. These seminars are small-sized, discussion-based courses taught by renowned faculty members. Designed specifically for first-year students, the seminars cover diverse topics ranging from literature and history to science and the arts.

The First-Year Seminar Program offers first-year students small-sized, discussion-based courses taught by some of Yale’s most distinguished faculty members. Students have the opportunity to engage deeply with the material, participate in lively discussions, and develop critical thinking and analytical skills. The program aims to foster a close-knit learning community and to introduce students to the rigorous academic environment at Yale from the outset of their undergraduate journey.

About the Program

Approximately 100 first-year seminars are offered each year across numerous departments and programs at Yale College. These seminars serve various purposes, from providing an introduction to a specific field to a specific field of study to taking an interdisciplinary approach to a chosen topic.

By the numbers

  • Enrollment in each seminar is limited to 15-18 students, depending on the course’s nature
  • Seminars typically meet twice a week.
  • Unless specified otherwise, seminars do not require prior experience in the field.
  • All first-year seminars offer regular Yale course credits and contribute toward fulfilling appropriate distributional and major requirements.

Students apply to these seminars during the registration period. They can enroll in no more than one first-year seminar per term and a maximum of two during their first year at Yale College.

Graduate students represent the crossroads of research and impact. You have the knowledge to help solve society’s greatest challenges and serve the future of our state in the workforce and beyond. Our doctoral hooding ceremony will recognize these accomplishments. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the Dean E. Smith Center. We welcome family members, friends, and anyone else you would like to invite.

Each doctoral graduate student who participates in the ceremony will be called to the stage to have the hood of the commencement regalia conferred by their advisor or other departmental faculty member.

Dr. Angeli Achrekar

Prior to joining UNAIDS in January 2023, Dr. Achrekar served as the Principal Deputy U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator for the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Over the past 20 years with the U.S. government and PEPFAR, she has held prominent positions helping to lead the largest global health effort of the U.S. government to ensure life-saving HIV prevention and treatment services to millions of people around the globe and strengthen health and community systems across 50 countries.

She is a passionate public servant, dedicated to advancing global health and development, across sectors, especially for women and girls. Angeli brings to the position extensive leadership and management experience in HIV/AIDS and public health. Over the years, she has helped evolve the program for more person-centered care, protecting and increasing HIV/AIDS gains while also capacitating countries for broader healthcare delivery. Her deep program, policy and partnership development experience at the global and country levels has cultivated strong multi-sectoral partnerships for large-scale and transformational impact, fundamental to ending the AIDS pandemic.

She holds a Doctorate of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master of Public Health from Yale University, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Angeli is married and the mother of beloved twin daughters. She loves poetry and nature. An unrelenting champion for health and rights for all, she believes in the power of service and partnership for change.

All May 2024 doctoral candidates, as well as 2023 August and December graduates, will receive an email invitation to the hooding ceremony in mid- to late February 2024. This email will be sent to your UNC-Chapel Hill email address (and/or personal email address) on record. August and December graduates should make sure to have an updated personal email address listed with the Office of the University Registrar through ConnectCarolina or [email protected] .

Please check all of your inboxes and folders in case the invitation is inadvertently directed to junk/spam folders. Please RSVP through the event registration system by March 31, 2024, with the name and email address of your hooding faculty.

If you have not received the invitation by March 15, 2024, please contact Kate McAnulty ( [email protected] ), senior associate dean for student affairs.

Please note, if you do not successfully complete all your degree requirements to have your degree conferred at the ceremony, you will not be allowed to participate in the hooding ceremony. No exceptions will be made.

Hooding Faculty Selection

Each doctoral graduate student will have the hood of the commencement regalia conferred by their adviser or other departmental faculty member. Please inquire as early as possible with your adviser whether they will attend the ceremony with you. If you have two faculty advisers, both can attend and hood you jointly.

If your faculty adviser is unavailable to attend the ceremony and confer your hood, you can request that another faculty member (preferably from your dissertation committee), your director of graduate studies, or your department chair confer your hood instead. The faculty member who confers your hood must be listed with The Graduate School as regular or fixed-term faculty.

If none of your faculty are available to confer your hood, the provost and the Royster Distinguished Professor will do so.

Please make sure that you and your hooding faculty have a clear plan of where to meet the morning of the ceremony. Given the heavy crowds as well as noise and visibility issues, we recommend a meeting location away from or even outside the entrance and check-in areas.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

If you have borrowed a Federal Loan while attending Carolina, you must complete the Exit Counseling to learn about loan repayment. The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid will also notify you of this requirement via email.

If you have borrowed a Federal Perkins or Health Professions Loan or any long-term university loan, you must complete exit counseling by accessing the ECSI website . You may contact the University Cashier at [email protected] with any questions.

Student basic/keepsake black regalia will be available to purchase through Student Stores online beginning in early/mid-March, in-store (starting Thursday, March 21st through commencement weekend), and at the conGRADulations Fair on Wednesday, March 20th. Every student who RSVPs through the event registration system will receive outreach from GradImages™ in advance of the ceremony. Please check all of your inboxes and folders in case the outreach is inadvertently directed to junk/spam folders.

  • At the beginning of August, your diploma will be mailed to your home address as listed in ConnectCarolina.
  • Your diploma will be printed with the diploma name as listed on your ConnectCarolina account.
  • If you need immediate proof of graduation, you may download an electronic diploma (for a fee of $10.95) beginning mid-June 2024.
  • If you require special handling (summer pick-up, FedEx, international delivery) for your diploma, please contact the Office of the University Registrar by May 10, 2024.
  • More information on diplomas is available from the Office of the University Registrar .

If your department has a separate ceremony, check with your department to determine whether or not they intend to distribute diplomas at their ceremony. Diploma frames can be purchased at Student Stores .

Faculty rental regalia is currently available for ordering through Oak Hall via Student Stores . The site will remain open through Wednesday, April 3rd, and the regalia will be available for pickup at UNC Student Stores starting the Monday of commencement week (May 6th). Payment is due at time of pickup, and the return deadline to have your items back in-store is Friday, May 17th.

Non-hooding faculty are invited to attend as a member of the general audience and will not participate in the academic processional. Seating will be reserved for faculty in Section 124.

Hooding Faculty

Hooding faculty should arrive at the Smith Center concourse level (Entrance D) to meet their students between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. You do not need to check in. Additional information will be provided by the Graduate School or by the degree candidate.

Please make sure that you and your students have each other's contact information so that you can coordinate where to meet the morning of the ceremony. Given the heavy crowds as well as noise and visibility issues, we recommend a meeting location away from or even outside the entrance and check-in areas.

Your student(s) will receive a name card at check-in which will later be scanned by a staff member prior to them going on stage. Please help us make sure that your student(s) does not lose that card over the course of the morning's activities.

As soon as you connect with your student, please proceed to the first floor (lower level) and take a seat with them. If you are hooding more than one student, make sure you are all sitting together.

At the end of the ceremony after the platform party recesses, students and faculty will be free to exit the floor and connect with family and friends. There is no recessional for students and hooding faculty.

Due to the timing of afternoon events in the Smith Center, staff will direct everyone off the floor and into the stands as soon as the ceremony is over.

Accessibility Services, Seating and Parking

Services for students, faculty, and guests with disabilities or medical conditions are available.

Accessible parking for guests is available in the Williamson Lot across the street from the Smith Center by presenting a disability permit/placard or license plate. The lot will be clearly marked with the appropriate signage. Golf carts will pick up guests needing assistance from the lot and drop them at Gate A.

Accessible seating is located all along the concourse level in the Smith Center. No ticket is required for seating. If you require other accommodations (interpreter services, more specialized seating, etc.) or if you do not have a disability permit/placard or license plate, please contact Commencement Accessibility Services at [email protected] .

Students and faculty who have accessibility needs should contact Commencement Accessibility Services ( [email protected]) who will work with staff from The Graduate School and the Office of University Events accordingly to navigate ceremony details.

Students do not have designated parking, so all guest parking lots (see below) can be used by students.

Reserved parking for faculty and deans will be available either in the Smith Center Lot, behind the Koury Natatorium and the Smith Center, or in the top tier of the Manning Lot. If parking in the Smith Center lot, upon arrival, please pull up to the parking gate and advise the parking attendant of your name to gain complimentary access to the Smith Center lot.

Reserved parking for members of the platform party will be in the Smith Center Lot, behind the Koury Natatorium and the Smith Center.

Parking for guests will be available in most lots surrounding the Smith Center ( map of these parking lots ). They include: the Manning Lot (on Bowles Drive between the Smith Center and Family Practice), the Bowles Lot (on Bowles Drive behind Craige Residence Hall), and the Business School Deck.

Accessible parking is available in the Williamson Lot across the street from the Smith Center by presenting a disability permit/placard or license plate. Guests needing parking accommodations for the elderly and not having a disability permit, plate, or placard should contact Commencement Accessibility Services at [email protected] .

Family at Hooding Ceremony

Guests should arrive between 8:00 and 8:45 a.m. and enter the Smith Center at Entrance A. Please do not bring gifts into the Smith Center.

No refreshments will be available at the ceremony. Please bring water and stay hydrated, especially if it is hot outside that morning.

Clear Bag Policy

Guests are encouraged to leave all bags at home, but the following items will be allowed into Commencement venues:

  • Any clear plastic or vinyl bag no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″, including gallon freezer bags.
  • Small clutch purses no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″.
  • Necessary medical items following inspection at entry gates.
  • Up to two unopened 20 ounce or smaller bottles of water per person and empty drink containers that can be filled up at drinking fountains.

Prohibited Items

Alcoholic beverages, artificial noise makers, baby seats, large bags, balloons, banners, flags and signs (larger than 8 ½" x 11"), signs on sticks or other devices, beach balls, coolers or containers, explosives, fireworks, folding chairs, food and beverages (except sealed plastic water bottles), illegal drugs, laser pointers, pets (except service animals), strollers (non-collapsible), umbrellas, weapons of any kind, any other item that in the judgment of management staff poses a safety hazard or detracts from the ability of others to enjoy the event.

All permissible bags and containers are subject to search upon entry.

Take I-85 South to Durham. Exit left at US 15-501 in Durham and follow 15-501 approximately nine miles to Chapel Hill. Once in Chapel Hill, stay on US 15-501 Bypass (Fordham Boulevard). At around the seventh stoplight, turn right onto Manning Drive. The Smith Center is half a mile on the left on Skipper Bowles Drive.

From points west

Take I-85 North towards Durham. Exit just past Burlington onto NC 54 East (Exit #148, Chapel Hill Exit). Follow NC 54 for approximately 20 miles to Carrboro. Pass Carrboro Plaza on the right and stay on NC 54 for about four miles to the next stoplight, Manning Drive. Turn left on Manning Drive. The Smith Center is half a mile on the left on Skipper Bowles Drive.

From points east

Take I-40 West toward Chapel Hill. Exit at NC 54 West (Exit #273 A) and follow for approximately four miles. Once in Chapel Hill, continue to follow signs for NC 54 West, which means you will have to exit right under the first overpass. At the top of the exit turn right at the light. Follow NC 54 West/15-501 South until the second stoplight. Turn right onto Manning Drive. The Smith Center is half a mile on the left on Skipper Bowles Drive.

From points south

Take US 15-50 North toward Chapel Hill. Exit right onto US 15-501 Bypass in Chapel Hill. Turn left at first stoplight onto Manning Drive. The Smith Center is half a mile on the left on Skipper Bowles Drive.

Will the ceremony be livestreamed?

Yes, the the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony will be livestreamed.

What time do graduates need to arrive?

Students and their faculty advisors should arrive starting at 8:00 and no later than 8:30 a.m. in full regalia. Students will need to pick up and hold on to their name cards, which will be scanned before they cross the stage, so that their names show up on the screen(s) overhead.

Are tickets required for guests?

No tickets are necessary and there is no restriction on the number of guests invited per graduate.

When should guests arrive?

How long does the ceremony usually last?

The ceremony will last no later than noon.

Will the names of graduates be announced?

Audience at hooding ceremony

Yes. Each doctoral graduate student who participates in the ceremony will be called to the stage to have the hood of the commencement regalia conferred by their adviser or other departmental faculty member.

Who can hood graduates?

Students should be hooded by their faculty adviser(s). If their faculty adviser(s) are unavailable, they can be hooded by another member of their committee and/or their program/department, such as their director of graduate studies or department chair. Students without available faculty will be hooded by the provost and the Royster Distinguished Professor. Students cannot be hooded by a non-faculty member, such as family, friends, or colleagues.

Can students be hooded during this ceremony but not officially graduate until later this year?

No. Only candidates who have met all degree requirements for this ceremony (and August and December graduates from the  previous  calendar year) will be hooded at this ceremony. If you officially graduate in a future semester, you will be invited to the following year's ceremony.

How will I receive my diploma?

At the end of June, your diploma will be mailed to your home address as listed in ConnectCarolina. If your department has a separate ceremony, check with your department to determine whether or not they intend to distribute diplomas at their ceremony. Diploma frames can be purchased at Student Stores . Diplomas will not be available for pick-up.
