W hat is a Tiffin Service

The model of tiffin service business is quite simple. You serve fresh and healthy home-made food to people who are living away from their homes. Typically, your customers will be young working professionals or students. So, the key to running a successful tiffin service is healthy and simple home-made food and nothing fancy.

Where to Begin

If you want to setup a dabba service facility at your home, you should have adequate space for cooking and packing bulk orders. A household kitchen of Indian homes is good enough to cook food for 40 to 50 people. But, as your customer base increases over 50 people, you may have to rent out a space in the same locality.

Next step is to get a food and safety license from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). However, this is mandatory only for those businesses that have an annual turnover of INR 12 lakh or more.

For marketing , dabba service mainly works on word of mouth. Positive feedbacks are what will get you more customers. However, you can market your company through social media as that's the most effective way of spreading word for small businesses with local presence. You can also post ads on Google, as that's the first place people look up for services they want to use.

Investment Required

Before putting together the cost, you must know that a basic meal typically consists of one dal, subzi, rice, chapattis and maybe even salad.

Costs borne by you will include the initial one-time investment and several recurring expenses.

One-time Investment

You need to make an initial investment of 20,000- 30,000 on utensils, burner and other essentials needed for cooking.

Recurring Costs

Running a tiffin service involves several recurring costs. Foremost, groceries cost per person, each day for two meals will be around INR 100.

If you handle most of the cooking work yourself, then you will need two assistants for cooking and cleaning, which will cost you anywhere between INR 6,000-8,000 per month. If you wish to provide door to door delivery then you'll have to shell out around INR 8,000 extra. However, door-to door delivery also means that you can charge INR 10-15 extra per thali.

Make sure that all orders that you take are within 4-5 km from your house so that food delivery, if you choose to give it, does not take more than half an hour.

If you rent out a medium size shop, it will be another INR 15,000-20,000 per month.

When you start your business we'd suggest posting google ads to get traction. This can cost you INR 10,000-12,000 per month. However, as you start getting reviews, you don't have to spend on this anymore.

What You Will Earn

Once you have a sizeable customer base, you can generate good revenue on your business.

Cost of a thali can range from INR 70-90 depending on the number of items you are providing. A thali with two vegetables, rice, salad and chappati will cost around INR 80.

If you are serving 50 people with two meals per day, your monthly income will be anywhere between INR 70,000 to INR 80,000 after deducting costs borne by you.

INTRODUCTION: HOW TO START TIFFIN SERVICE BUSINESS

Tiffin services , a beloved culinary tradition in India, have seen a remarkable resurgence in recent years. This age-old concept involves homemade meals, lovingly prepared and delivered to individuals, students, and professionals seeking nourishing and convenient dining solutions.

In the fast-paced, urban landscape of modern India, the demand for tiffin services has surged. With hectic schedules and the pursuit of healthier lifestyles, many Indians are opting for tiffin services that offer a diverse array of balanced, homemade meals. These services not only save time but also cater to dietary preferences, ensuring that individuals can enjoy tasty and nutritious food without the hassle of cooking or dining out.

As we delve into the world of starting and running a tiffin service business, we will explore the nuances of this culinary venture and how it aligns with the evolving preferences of a health-conscious and time-strapped India.

Market Research

Before embarking on the journey of launching a tiffin service, comprehensive market research is the compass that guides your business toward success. This crucial step not only informs your business decisions but also shapes your understanding of the competitive landscape and the preferences of your potential customers.

  • Menu, Pricing & Competition: Market research forms the bedrock of your tiffin service venture. It helps you identify gaps in the market, assess the demand for your offerings, and make informed choices regarding your menu, pricing, and Competition. Without a deep understanding of the market, you may find yourself navigating blindfolded, increasing the risk of failure.
  • Identifying Your Target Audience: Your tiffin service’s success hinges on your ability to identify and connect with your target audience. Start by segmenting the market based on demographics, including age, gender, occupation, and location. Understanding these demographics will enable you to tailor your offerings to specific groups.
  • Explore Preference: Dive into the preferences of your target audience. What types of cuisine do they prefer? Are there dietary restrictions or cultural preferences to consider? What is their Budget? Do they value organic, locally sourced ingredients? Conduct surveys, focus groups, or online research to gather valuable insights.
  • Adapt to Market Insights: Market research is not a one-time endeavour; it is an ongoing process. Continuously monitor market trends, gather customer feedback, and adapt your tiffin service to evolving preferences. This flexibility and responsiveness will position your business for sustained growth.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

Starting a home-based tiffin service in India involves several legal and regulatory requirements to ensure food safety, hygiene, and compliance. Here is a breakdown of the key legal aspects:

  • FSSAI Registration (Optional): While FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) registration is optional for businesses with a turnover of less than 12 lakhs, it is highly recommended. It certifies that your tiffin service adheres to food safety standards. You can apply for FSSAI registration for a nominal fee of approximately Rs 500 for a 5-year period through www.fssai.gov.in.
  • GST Registration (Optional): GST (Goods and Services Tax) registration is only required for businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs 40 lakhs. However, you may choose to register for GST if you plan to cater to corporate clients who require invoices.
  • Business Registration (Optional): Depending on your preference, you can choose to register your home-based tiffin service as a legal entity, such as a Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, or Private Limited company. This is particularly useful if you intend to provide invoices to corporate clients.
  • RWA/Society Alignment: It is advisable to inform your Residential Welfare Association (RWA) and share your FSSAI registration details with them to ensure a smooth and legally compliant operation of your tiffin service from home.
  • Hygiene & Safety Standards: Adhere to strict food safety and hygiene standards in your home kitchen. This includes maintaining cleanliness, proper food storage, and practicing safe food handling procedures. Additionally, ensure you have necessary fire safety measures in place for the benefit of your customers and as a moral obligation.

Complying with these legal requirements not only ensures the legality of your home-based tiffin service but also instills confidence in your customers regarding food safety and quality. It is advisable to consult with legal experts or regulatory authorities to ensure full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in your specific location.

In a home-based tiffin service, upholding impeccable food safety and hygiene standards is not just a choice; it is a necessity. Here is why it is paramount and guidelines to ensure it:

  • Importance of Food Safety and Hygiene: Your tiffin service’s reputation hinges on the quality of food and the perception of hygiene. Any lapse in hygiene, even minor, can lead to customer dissatisfaction, refunds, and tarnished online reviews, especially in today’s era of social media scrutiny.

Guidelines for Maintaining Hygiene:

  • Sanctify Your Kitchen: Treat your kitchen as a sacred space. Keep it spotlessly clean with regular sanitization routines.
  • Personal Hygiene: Maintain personal cleanliness, including rigorous handwashing, use of gloves, and hairnets.

Efficient delivery and packaging play a vital role in the success of a tiffin service. Here are tips for ensuring timely and secure deliveries:

  • Local Rider Partnerships: Collaborate with local riders associated with food delivery platforms. They are often eager for guaranteed deliveries, providing a win-win solution.
  • Sturdy Packaging: Use food-grade, airtight containers to maintain food quality during transit. Secure packaging prevents spills and maintains freshness.
  • Timely Deliveries: Stick to promised delivery times religiously. Punctuality enhances customer trust and satisfaction.
  • Courteous Delivery Personnel: Train delivery staff to be polite and professional, as they represent your brand.

By focusing on efficient delivery and affordable options, you can enhance customer loyalty and build a strong reputation for your tiffin service.

A Complete Guide To Marketing Strategy For Tiffin Service

tiffin center business plan

If putting on an apron, creating new recipes and feeding your family, friends and guests is your passion, then you can become a food entrepreneur with ease. Several women are talented and skilled in the art of cooking. They love hosting dinner parties and look forward to potluck lunches.

The need and demand for good food is never-ending. A lot of people live away from home for work or education. You can deliver fresh, homemade food, cooked with care, to them. The concept of cloud kitchens encouraged tons of women to deliver their regional specialities or specific cuisines. The model of a tiffin service business is simple and highly lucrative. You can run it as a part-time job for now, while studying or working.

Are you still making your mind? Here is how you can get started:

Idea and Concept

In the crowded market, the differentiation becomes vital. Offer gourmet food prepared with fine ingredients and attention to the fine details. Make the dishes

Lunch is the most important meal of the day. Who doesn’t love to have a healthy lunch with friends over a conversation? Who doesn’t like a Wednesday evening office lunch and a Sunday afternoon brunch with friends? Not many. If people love to spend money on a good meal, then you have a solid business idea. Be ready to take up orders in bulk. Prepare for the demand with a scale-up plan.

What exactly do you do?

You can cook yourself, run a small catering unit or hire a chef to make food for customers. You deliver the best food at their office cafeteria or workplace. The best tiffin service providers offer fresh food from their kitchens. Prepare a menu that is finger-licking good.

Even before you get started, you need to come up with a menu. Do a reality check with the price range of similar food from restaurants and hotels in the neighbourhood.

The way forward for a tiffin service entrepreneur

It is obvious that business is booming. If you choose the brick-and-mortar model, you need a kitchen with all the amenities. It can be pricey.

Your customers will be happy to work with a neat and clean kitchen if you are offering food for their office canteens or corporate parties. They simply love to eat good food. So, you must do a lot of research, observe the market and find out the best way to prepare food for your clients.

The chef in charge needs to have proper training and certifications, especially the food safety course. You can also follow the rigorous guidelines of the food business policy. Getting the licence of the food safety management is your later step in the establishment of the business. Back then, you need to get permission from the local authorities. It is your legal duty to serve a healthy food dish to your customers.

The suppliers

You need to decide the kind of food you want and select your suppliers accordingly. You must employ a manager to oversee the kitchen in your absence. You must stay in touch with bakers, late farmers, and local farmers. Make sure you are not overburdening them with too much work. Determine how much you can take at one time, not more and not less.

A good tiffin service provider has a good connection with the farmers, so as to meet the demand. Besides, you must have a good grasp of the trends in the market.

Reach your customers

You need to get in touch with your potential customers directly. Your menu, contact number and photo should be an integral part of your website. It is not enough if you have only a Facebook page. You cannot advertise your business with that kind of strategy. You need to find out where your customers are going and advertise your business in the right place. Know your market and build your brand in the right areas.

Reviews and feedback

You need to perfect your recipe and consult with your customers. Customers will appreciate the excellent quality of food and valuable feedback. However, the bad review or a social media rant impacts you. Reach out to the customers and fix the problem. Be systematic and follow the letter of the law wherever you are in India.

You need to submit a proposal to your customers for your budgeting. It is the best and simplest way to gauge the affordability of food. Remember, your customers are always on a budget.

The low ticket size of the tiffin service business might be considered a drawback. However, it is a good way for you to tap into a plethora of markets. It is not difficult for women entrepreneurs. It is the niche market, and you need to fill in the gap. Find the best customer base for yourself.

It is not a difficult task to start your tiffin service business. The first step is to plan a menu of high-end food, then you can decide the business model. Happy business!

Beyond The Tiffin: A Complete Guide To Tiffin Service

Substance Over Style: Growing Your Online Business With Content Marketing

What This Book Will Do for You

Throughout your life, you’ll have countless opportunities to mingle with individuals you know, like, and trust. These opportunities will shape and inform your opinions about your future interest, significant others, and potential friends. You might even be surprised to learn that you have an opportunity to shape and inform theirs. They may think of you decades from now as their college roommate, dude who served them coffee for five years, or woman who took their daughter or son to school the one time they met. How you go about handling these moments with grace will make or break your content marketing campaign.

Frankly, when you put it that way, it sounds slightly overwhelming. However, you have yourself to blame, as you’re currently sitting down reading or listening to what you’re reading. Also, if you weren’t the kind of person to absorb new information as it pertains to improving their own life, you wouldn’t even know about this book, so this situation is really your own doing.

But what kind of immodest reminder was that, and why would I be writing this intricate piece if I expected myself to follow my own self-improvement advice?

It’s because legacy is important. Whether you’re in a job you love or a career that you put together to foster your interests, we all try to leave an impact on the world. Not everyone does it intentionally. Not everyone is ready to open their minds, but those who are ready are, to varying degrees, ready to move on from the way things were to the way they will be.

And I’m here to tell you that the way most companies and individuals do business is not how you’re going to do business, once I’m done telling you about it.

I wish I could say that I had a way cool story that explains this basic, still important, idea. I don’t. There’s no pithy saying. We can’t all be as cool as Steve Jobs and his ‘think different’ bromide. What I can do is set out what I’m going to do for you in this book. Then, I can explain why I know what I know, and then you can take a look at the methods I will teach you and decide if you think they are worth adopting.

I wish I could apologize for the wait. While it has taken a few years to put into words, there has been little about the story I’m going to tell that has taken me by surprise, and that may still be true when you read these words. I’m effective at identifying what’s best for me, what I’m doing wrong, and how to correct it.

You may be thinking that this is an obvious statement. Well, it is. It’s obvious because it’s the case for a lot of people, but not many people know how to do it, and fewer still do it well.

So, what’s this book about?

It’s about immersing yourself in the stuff that you do best, but that other people like, too. It’s about using that connection to other people to build a meaningful presence online, so that you can do what you love and earn a living while doing it.

Corporate Meal Plan

Step #4 – Find funds to set up your business

Ensure you have enough funds to set up your business and cater to the customers’ needs. Even if you start small, you will require a basic set-up like gas, stove, mixer, pots, and pans. There is also the recurring expenditure of groceries, electricity, and gas that you need to cater to.

You can start a tiffin service catering to up to 15 people per day with an investment of Rs. 10,000 and scale up later as more orders start coming in.

You can also take a micro-loan to start your home business. Many banks and organizations offer women entrepreneurs such loans at manageable interest rates.

Step #5 – Insure your business

Just like you take medical insurance in case something goes wrong with your health, you need to insure your business against any damage or theft. Meet your local insurance agent to discuss what insurance policy is best suited for you.

Step #6 – Safety and hygiene

As a tiffin provider, it is paramount that you maintain safety and hygiene in your kitchen. Make sure the work area is always clean. Get regular pest control done. Always wash the vegetables before chopping them. Always use gloves.

Check the temperature of all those who handle food regularly. Make sure everyone uses hand sanitizer and soap and wears masks.

Step #7 – Delivery strategy

As a tiffin service, you are responsible for cooking the meals and delivering them promptly. You may be able to do this on your own if you are catering to the people in your neighborhood, or you may hire someone to deliver the tiffins for you.

You can also partner with a homemade meal delivery service like Mealawe. This Pune-based company believes in empowering home chefs to earn from their daily cooking.

Partnering with them will make you more discoverable and broaden your outreach. You will be able to grow your consumer base much faster through Mealawe.

Step #8 – Advertising and promotion

Advertising and promotion are vital for the success of any business. Here are some ways in which you can promote your tiffin business-

  • Start a Facebook page for your tiffin service.
  • Share your menu on the WhatApp group of the neighboring societies
  • Create a Local Google Business Listing
  • Team up with homemade food delivery apps like Mealawe

Step 9 – Take feedback

The success of every business depends on how connected you are with your customers. So take feedback about your food once a week from your customers.

Mention the ingredients used, so you don’t have any complaints about allergies. Change your menu regularly and ensure that it is tasty, healthy, and nutritious.

Step 10 – Register on Mealawe

Mealawe is one such platform that only focuses on homemade food delivery. You can register here as a home chef and start selling your homemade food right away. This platform will give you daily new users and also provide you delivery services right from your doorstep. The platform is as easy as counting 1,2,3.

Final thoughts

As more people understand the importance of freshly prepared, hygienic, and tasty homecooked meals, the demand for tiffin services is rising. Follow the nine steps mentioned above and give your entrepreneurial dreams the wings to soar. You can also register with Mealawe as a home chef and earn and grow with them.

You can make a website for your tiffin service or post images of the dishes available on Instagram and Facebook.

When the concept of establishing a business occurs to most people, they take a step back. Profits provide excitement, but losses trigger a sense of caution. This is precisely why it’s vital to channel your investments into a business that genuinely ignites your passion. For those who find joy in cooking, embarking on their entrepreneurial journey through a tiffin service is a promising path. Initiating a tiffin service typically demands minimal upfront investment, but the potential returns can be considerably rewarding if executed adeptly.

What Is A Tiffin Service?

The tiffin service business plan is straightforward. You provide fresh and nutritious home-cooked meals to folks who are living away from their homes. Most of your customers will be working professionals or students. So, the key to having a successful tiffin business is to serve nutritious and home-cooked meals rather than anything flashy.

How To Get Started?

If you want to start a dabba service at home, then you should have enough space for cooking and packing bulk orders. A typical Indian home kitchen can prepare meals for up to 20 to 30 people. However, if your customer base grows to more than 40 people, you may need to rent a place in the same neighbourhood.

The dabba service relies significantly on word of mouth for marketing. Positive feedback is what will bring you more consumers. However, you can market your firm through social media, which is the most effective way of spreading the word for small businesses with a local presence.

You can make a website for your tiffin service or post images of the dishes available on Instagram and Facebook. As your online presence grows, potential clients are likely to reach out. Additionally, investing in Google advertising can be a game-changer. Since Google is often the initial destination for people seeking services, placing ads there can substantially raise awareness and drive inquiries about your offerings. These days, not only women but even men are venturing into the food service industry.

Investment:

Before you calculate the cost, you should know that a standard meal normally consists of one dal, one subzi , rice, chapattis , and maybe salad. You will be responsible for the initial one-time investment as well as many ongoing expenses. You’ll need to spend between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000 on cooking equipment, burners, and other things. Furthermore, maintaining a tiffin business includes a number of ongoing expenses.

Your business can earn considerable money after you have a sizable consumer base.

Food and Safety Licence:

Once your tiffin service is up and running, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will issue you a food and safety licence. However, this is only required for enterprises with an annual revenue of Rs 12 lakh or higher.

Starting a Tiffin Centre Business

To start a tiffin service business , you have to understand the tiffin market carefully and make a plan accordingly to attract more customers. The points mentioned below will help you make a full proof plan to start a full-fledged tiffin service .

Fund Generation

Fund generation is the first step to starting any business. Usually, tiffin service startups in India can cost ₹10,000 for about 15-20 customers per month. If you want to start a tiffin service with large scale customers, your investment will increase accordingly.

Moreover, the principal investment should not be overlooked, including cooking utensils and ovens. Clubbing your business with hotels can give support in your initial days.

Creating Plan

You have to understand your customer and the market. The first and foremost thing to remember in a tiffin service is preparing tasty food on a large scale using limited oils and spices.

Customers benefiting from tiffin services mostly live alone in the city and prefer home-cooked food that is pocket friendly. So you have to provide them accordingly with your profit from the business. Moreover, the tiffin service business has a chain-like system connected to many other businesses. You have to choose the vegetable carefully, a vendor who can provide fresh vegetables, a delivery person who is punctual and reliable, etc.

Associating With a Delivery System

It is extremely important to choose a reliable delivery system. The customer will prefer your tiffin service over others if you have good food quality and deliver their tiffins on time. The chosen delivery system should be prompt.

Apart from that, they should have a flexible contract term and maintain punctuality.

There are many tiffin centres around, so you should be ready to market in the best possible way to put your tiffin business on the map. Social media is the best platform to advertise your business. Posting on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, developing strong SEO, etc., can help you gain new ground.

Offline marketing can also help gain customers, like pamphlets and sticking posters nearby your location. Mumbai is well-known for its Dabba service. If you are setting up a tiffin centre business in Mumbai, you can take advantage by giving out tiffin service pamphlet s in Marathi .

WhatsApp Business can be your business-friendly app and help you connect personally with the delivery services and the customers.

The best way to market your business is by increasing the number of organic customers. If the customer is satisfied with your services, they will recommend your business to their co-workers, friends, and family. Thus one should never forget to take customer reviews positively and improve accordingly.

Requirements for Tiffin Service

Starting a tiffin service business requires a business plan and major requirements.

Some of the major principal needs are mentioned below.

Culinary skills

A tiffin centre investment is more about having good culinary and management skills. If you are passionate about cooking a variety of tasty food, you will be successful in this business.

You can also hire people with good culinary skills and involve them in making various dishes. The more variety you can provide, the more customers will enjoy their daily food surprise.

The menu should cater to the majority of your customers. The menu should be flexible and be based on seasonal vegetables. You can set the menu for a month or a week and change it according to the customer reviews. If you can improve your menu according to the customers’ preferences, it’ll help you build an organic customer base.

Tiffin Boxes

Tiffin boxes are necessary to pack tiffins and deliver them. The investment in tiffin boxes should be reasonable. Stainless steel tiffin boxes are ideal for packing foods as they last longer and are sturdy.

You should avoid tiffin boxes made of low quality plastic as they can react with warm food and release harmful chemicals. Moreover, plastics are prone to breakage, and the tiffin service delivery system demands sturdy tiffins because the delivery process involves a lot of tiffin handling from one person to another.

The size of your business will decide whether you need to apply for a food and safety licence or not.  If the turnover of your business is above ₹12 lakhs per year, you have to apply for a food and safety licence from the FSSAI or Food safety and legal authority of India.

Having a food and safety licence can help you avoid legal issues.

Types of Equipment

Pieces of equipment are an important accessory for food-based businesses. A spacious kitchen to cook food, utensils and oven for commercial use are the most important pieces of equipment. A food processor, chopper, flour kneader and others are important equipment that can ease your work to a great extent.

Refrigerators are important to store raw vegetables and leftovers.

Customer Base

The customers are the basic requirement without whom the business will fall apart. Therefore you should target customer criteria, like young students living in pg, young professionals living away from home, working couples, etc.

The advertisement should be done accordingly, like social media for young customers, tiffin service pamphlets for the customer base who prefer newspapers over social media, etc.

Attracting Customers

Once the question of how to start a tiffin service business has been answered, the next question arises how to attract customers and gain popularity. We can easily gain customers by branching the business into subunits and increasing the service provided to the customers. Some of the services that you can include are:

Healthy Diet Service

With exposure to social media, people are becoming health conscious. Many individuals are on a diet most of the time. Different types of diets have different requirements. For example, the keto diet strictly follows no carbohydrates. Protein-based food, high in good fats and fibre, is customers’ first choice. If the menu can include a healthy diet such as sprout salad, Russian salad, chicken and brown rice, it can target health-conscious customers.

Tiffin Services Based on App

If your tiffin services are controlled on the app, it will be easy for customers to choose their meal plan, subscription, and meal type. Not only customers, but it will make your management easy too.

Subscription of Meals

The subscription of the meals should be flexible. A person trying for the first time can take a weekly subscription to understand your food and service quality and quantity.

This way, more customers will approach your business to try your service. A tiffin service business plan should be given to the customers to understand the subscription better.

What is a Tiffin Service?

Foods are cooked in bulk, packaged, and delivered to the consumer on a contractual basis; this is known as a “tiffin service.” The tiffin service is generally available by students or employees living and working other than their hometown. However, tiffin service can target several other audiences and earn a decent profit. There is room for expansion in the tiffin industry because of the mutual benefits of lower costs for consumers and vendors.

Stepwise Procedure to Start a Tiffin Service Business in India

Invest funds.

The first step in launching a business is raising capital. In India, the average monthly cost of a tiffin service startup is roughly 10,000. The initial outlay for a tiffin service targeting a sizable clientele will rise in proportion to the size of the market targeted. The primary investment, which includes things like stoves and ovens, also shouldn’t be forgotten. You can invest from your pocket or get a small business loan .

Do Market Research

Doing market research before launching a business is crucial. It’s useful for pinpointing potentially fruitful avenues of expansion and development within a certain industry. For instance, you may cash in on the trend for Mangalorean cuisine by catering to the city’s thirst for authentic, home-cooked meals. If you’re trying to decide between starting a weekly tiffin service and only doing weekend catering, a thorough market analysis is essential. Furthermore, you need to analyze the competition and demand in your neighbourhood.

Create a Business Plan

To succeed in Tiffin Service Business, you need market and client knowledge. If you’re running a tiffin business, your first priority should be making good meals for a big number of people using a small amount of oil and spices.

Those who use tiffin services tend to be single professionals who enjoy home-cooked, cost-effective meals in the city. In turn, you must share your business’s profits with them. In addition, the tiffin service industry is interconnected with a wide variety of other enterprises through a chain-like structure. Careful consideration must be given to the selection of vegetables, seller who can supply fresh veggies, delivery person who is prompt and dependable, etc.

Here, you should create a business plan and decide the business location, business model type, margins and the costs of your products and services.

Acquire necessary License and Registrations

After understanding the market, it is now your turn to get the necessary licenses and registrations so that you can run your business legally. One of the most crucial registration that you will need in India for any and every food business is FSSAI Registration . The other beneficial registrations that you can take are GST Registration , Trademark Registration , Company Registration and MSME Registration .

Each of these offers significant benefits that can help you grow and sustain your tiffin service business and you can understand more about them through consulting our business advisors at: 8881-069-069 or find the helpful material at:

Get Insurance for your Business

Business insurance is just as important as individual insurance policies in case something should happen to you or your company. There is always the chance of anything going wrong in business, so it’s smart to take precautions in advance. You should talk to an insurance professional in your area about the type of protection you need.

Take measures to maintain hygiene and quality of foods offered

Today, personal cleanliness is paramount. As a tiffin service business, you know how important it is to keep your customers happy. Controlling pests on a regular basis, using gloves when packing and cooking, and thoroughly cleaning the kitchen are all options. Not only must anyone working with the food take their temperatures, wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water, and wear protective gear like gloves and masks, but they must also follow these rules strictly.

Partner with Delivery Providers

Selecting a trustworthy transport method is crucial. If the food you provide is of high quality and you always deliver on time, your tiffin service will stand out among the competition. The selected delivery method needs to be quick. In addition, they need to be able to adjust the length of their contract as needed and be reliable in meeting deadlines.

There are already plenty of tiffin centers, so you’ll need to be well-prepared to advertise your own. The most effective way to promote a business is on social media. You may advance in many ways by using social media like Facebook and Instagram and by working on your search engine optimization.

Pamphlets and posters placed strategically in your area are examples of offline marketing that can bring in clients. The Dabba delivery service in Mumbai has gained international renown. Distributing Marathi-language leaflets advertising your tiffin service is a great way to attract customers in Mumbai, where you may launch your new tiffin center company.

The business-friendly app WhatsApp Business may facilitate direct communication between you, your delivery partners, and your consumers.

A company’s finest marketing strategy is one that results in more of its existing clients buying from it again and again. Customer satisfaction is the key to gaining repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising from delighted clients. As a result, it’s crucial to always remember to respond constructively to feedback from customers.

In brief, keep in mind the following steps to start your tiffin service business:

  • Get the word out about your company using social media and Internet advertising.
  • Provide exclusive pricing and membership rewards to patrons.

How To Start A Home Tiffin Service Or Dabba Service In India

Learn how to start a home tiffin service or Indian food dabba service with Shipra Baranwal, founder of a six-figure home-kitchen business in India.

The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted many inspiring cases of women becoming microentrepreneurs by starting a business from home. One of the best home-based business ideas for moms is to start a home tiffin service or dabba service.

In India, we have a long tradition of dabbawala tiffin services – a lunchbox delivery and return system that delivers hot lunches from homes and restaurants to people at work, and the Mumbai dabbawala service has inspired many studies for its accuracy and effectiveness.

During the pandemic and lockdowns, queries as “ tiffin service near me ”, “ tiffin centre near me ”,  “ dabba service near me ” and “ Ghar ka khana near me ” went up as more people chose nearby tiffin services over restaurant food.

This inspired many enterprising and resourceful home cooks to launch a home tiffin startup, supplying safe and healthy homemade tiffin services to neighbours in their housing society and locality.

If you receive glowing compliments on your home cooking, are confident in your cooking abilities, and know you can cook food that makes other people happy, then a dabba service or tiffin box service may be the best home business to start for you.

But, while many home cooks have the desire to start their own home businesses, what they lack is the financial guidance to start a Ghar ka khana tiffin service or home-based kitchen business in India.

Do you want to use your excellent cooking skills to start a home-based cooking business? If you feel that a home food tiffin service is the easiest home-based business to start, you should definitely consider starting one.

In this article, SHEROES Champion, Shipra Baranwal, founder of a home kitchen business called No Cooking Weekend , answers questions from SHEROES users on starting their own home tiffin service or dabba service.

Shipra started her home-cooked food tiffin service during the pandemic in 2020 and cooks everything from Kebabs and Biryanis to Amritsari Kulche on the weekends.

Her home tiffin business has generated a six-figure revenue in the last year and was featured in Conde Nast Traveller as one of the home kitchens in Mumbai to order from.

If you want to start your own Ghar ka khana tiffin service, you can learn a lot from her tiffin service business model and success story.

Home-Kitchen Food Business

How did you start No Cooking Weekend ?

The whole project started as a weekend engagement during the lockdown last year. It started as a passion project and a side-hustle. I was working from home and did not have much to do on the weekends.

I used to cook Biryani for my family as a weekend treat. Last year, when the lockdown happened and restaurants were closed, my husband gave me the idea to take orders for Biryani in my housing society.

So the next Sunday, I put out a picture of my Biryani on our society WhatsApp group and took a limited number of orders. The feedback was great and everyone started asking for more.

That’s how No Cooking Weekend was born. Now, apart from Kebabs and Biryanis, I also do weekend meal experiences which is a hit. I still cook only on the weekends though 🙂

What’s the first thing to do when you get a home business idea?

The first thing to do before investing in a home kitchen food business is to test the idea to understand the demand and get some customer feedback.

When feedback for my non-veg tiffin service was great and people started asking for more, slowly it started growing. I also learnt about capacity planning and pricing, and that’s how my weekend kitchen kicked off.

How to get a food license for your home tiffin business

Did you require a license for home kitchen businesses, which is a must for getting a loan? What are the local licenses required to start a home tiffin business?

Anyone operating a home tiffin business needs to apply for the FSSAI license for home-kitchen businesses . It’s an easy online process and a home-based kitchen license costs just 100 rupees.

Having an FSSAI registration for home kitchen services does increase one’s chances of loan approval . My FSSAI home kitchen registration license came by email within 3 months.

How to finance your home tiffin business

What sort of finance and setup do you need to start a home kitchen business serving people in your housing society?

To start a small kitchen business from home, the setup required is quite basic. The gas and stove are already installed in our home kitchens. From my own experience, an initial investment of INR 10,000 is enough to start a tiffin catering service that serves 15 to 20 customers.

My initial investment included buying a food processor mainly for grinding, chopping vegetables and kneading atta (wheat flour). The other things I bought included 2 large size pots and a small kitchen weighing scale.

Keeping safety in mind, I pack the food in disposable boxes instead of asking people to bring their containers, so that’s another cost to add with your tiffin business from home.

What do I need to start a home tiffin service or dabba service in India?

To start a home tiffin business, you need cooking skills. Basic Maths will help with managing expenses and making better profits. I initially tested the idea for my home tiffin service with small orders without investing any money.

The good thing about a home catering business is that you need only gas, ingredients and utensils, all of which are in our houses. After I got good feedback and was sure this will work I invested a small amount of money.

From my own experience, an initial investment of INR 10,000 is enough to start a small home tiffin business that serves 15 to 20 customers per week. You can either invest from your savings or apply for a loan from Mahila Money .

Mahila Bank

. Do I need any documentation to get a loan for my home tiffin business? Should I take a government loan or go to a private bank?

You don’t need any documents to start a home tiffin service, but you should apply for an FSSAI registration if you plan to run the business for the long term. It is very easy and the license only costs 100 rupees a year.

Nowadays, it’s quite easy to get a loan for your home tiffin service. Mahila Money offers personal micro-loans exclusively for ambitious women in the SHEROES community.

You can make use of their easy loan facility to start your home tiffin or dabba service. You’ll require a scanned passport-size picture, your Aadhaar card, Pan Card and Bank account details to complete the form successfully.

See how  Yasmin from Haqdarshak in Nashik, availed of a collateral-free, co-guarantor-free Rs 1 lakh Mahila Money loan to invest in her tiffin service business with the aim of expanding the business, renting a space and hiring 3 to 4 cooks to supply food to clients.

Download the SHEROES app for women and learn how Mahila Money supports Indian women in starting their own microenterprise home kitchen or work from home business.

Is it possible to do this type of business alone? How can I estimate how much I will earn through this?

I run my home kitchen business all by myself. Depending upon how many people you can cook for and the number of days you cook one can earn anywhere from 10,000 a month to 50,000 per month.

Start a Food Business

How to price your food for your home tiffin menu

How do I price my food? Should I follow the restaurant prices?

This is something that I believe most home chefs struggle with because operating from a home environment means you don’t have economies of scale. So the ingredient costs will always be higher because you’re buying smaller quantities.

Competing with restaurants on pricing will either result in poor profits or you may have to reduce the quality of ingredients – both of which I do not recommend.

What I do suggest is to compare your tiffin service prices with other home chefs in your city. That should give you a fair idea of how to price your food.

Here is how I fix the cost of my dishes. I calculate all the expenses involved for cooking that dish and packing it for delivery then I add my profit margin. As a quick example:

Therefore, the total cost estimate is about INR 650. Now, let’s say if you want to make a 50% profit, you may want to set your selling price at INR 1000 rupees/kg of biryani.

If you compare this with the pricing of Biryani by Kilo on Swiggy, 1 kg of Chicken Biryani sells for INR 760. But they do have the power of bulk purchase and the ability to cater to high volume orders. As a home chef, you may not be able to do this.

Apart from tiffin centre prices and profits, what I do focus a lot on is customer loyalty and I measure it every week. Currently, 60% of my customers order at least twice per month from No Cooking Weekend .

Tiffin Business

Should you partner with food delivery services for tiffin delivery service?

What is your advice on partnering with Swiggy and Zomato for tiffin delivery?

The pros of partnering with Zomato and Swiggy online tiffin service apps is that you become more discoverable and have a wider reach. You also don’t have to worry about tiffin delivery which helps expand your customer reach.

However, the cons are that your profit margin reduces as the commissions charged by these platforms are quite high, and secondly, when selling through their app you will be competing for the same segment of customers on price.

Swiggy and Zomato also offer a lot of discounts, which ultimately eats into your profit. If you look at the current trend, a lot of restaurants now offer higher discounts when you order directly through them than via a tiffin delivery service.

One thing to bear in mind is that as a home chef you don’t have economies of scale so the ingredient costs will always be higher for you. Competing on price and making a good profit margin can be challenging.

Also, running a home tiffin service or home kitchen means you’ll have a limited capacity to take orders.

How to start an online Tiffin Delivery Business?

online tiffin delivery service

When it comes to online businesses, the possibilities are truly endless. You can transform your passion into a thriving business without substantial monetary and time investment from the comfort of your home. One such viable business venture is an online tiffin delivery business that involves delivering packed meals to your customers at a fixed time every day. There are two ways to set up an online tiffin delivery business; you either prepare the food yourself and deliver it to customers or put together a tiffin marketplace to aggregate other tiffin services and handle the delivery.

Before we look into how to start an online tiffin delivery business, let’s look at why it’s a great option in the current on-demand business landscape .

Why Start an Online Tiffin Delivery Business?

online tiffin delivery service

  • Growing Demand: Homemade food has become a necessity for working professionals, students, and anyone else who isn’t home for a good part of the day. While canteens are available in most workplaces and schools, they don’t offer food that should be eaten every day. This growing requirement for home-cooked food has made tiffin delivery businesses quite famous.
  • Timed Management: With a tiffin delivery business , you can provide freshly prepared, nutritious meals to people at a fixed time every day. It can make managing the business much easier since you have a schedule to follow and plan your food preparation and deliveries accordingly.
  • Exciting Profit Margins: When it comes to food, most people don’t mind paying a little if they get high-quality meals that use fresh and premium ingredients. Your online tiffin delivery business can enjoy significant profit margins if you plan your expenses well and ensure your orders’ smart delivery.
  • Hassle-Free Setup: Like most online businesses, a tiffin delivery business is relatively easy to set up given you have the right tools and software. Depending on the business model you’re going for, you can have your online tiffin delivery business up and running in less than a week.

Things to Consider When Starting an Online Tiffin Delivery Business

Registration and license.

No business can start without first registering with the designated government body and then obtaining the proper licenses required to run a business legally. Once you decide to take the plunge and start your online tiffin delivery business, you’ll need to register the name of your tiffin business. Next, you need to apply for a catering license, which will then be issued once your office and kitchen are thoroughly inspected and are deemed to comply with the state’s food and sanitation requirements.

Ensure Your Business

Your online tiffin delivery business needs to be insured against any potential damage, theft, or any other unanticipated circumstance. Your kitchen, equipment, and staff (if any) need a comprehensive insurance cover, and getting an insurance policy for your business is also mandatory under most laws.

Sourcing The Equipment

Food is the mainstay of your online tiffin business, and you need the right equipment to whip up tasty and nutritious meals for your tiffin service. You can go about sourcing equipment for your online tiffin business in two ways; renting/leasing or buying. Depending on your budget and initial investment, you can make a choice.

Menu Configuration

The next step in setting up your online tiffin delivery business is finalizing the menu. It would be best if you came up with a menu that utilizes your skills while addressing the demand and needs of customers you hope to service. You can either have a daily menu that features a decent mix of food that people would want to eat or an ala carte menu that people can choose from. Your online tiffin delivery business menu doesn’t need to be set in stone and can always change depending on customer feedback.

Pricing Your Online Tiffin Delivery Service

Any business can function only as long as it’s profitable and achieve significant profit margins, and you need to price your offerings smartly. While the food can have a base price, it’s delivery where you can room to play with the price. You can charge a higher delivery fee depending on the distance and time of delivery. Surge pricing during peak hours is also something to consider when setting your tiffin delivery service price.

Delivering Tiffins

As an online tiffin delivery business, you’re responsible not just for preparing scrumptious meals for your customers but also for delivering them promptly. To achieve this, you need to maintain a reliable delivery fleet that is equipped with the right tools to deliver tiffins on time. Tookan, an enterprise delivery management system, allows you to optimize your delivery operations with features like route planning, real-time tracking, automated dispatch, powerful geo-analytics tools, efficient integrations, and many more. 10 Key Steps To Start A Successful Tiffin Service Business From Home

How To Set Up A Tiffin Service Business?

The key to running a successful tiffin service is healthy and simple homemade food and nothing fancy. The success of your business venture will depend on having a good reputation and meeting the demands of your customers.

1. Market Research

Market Research

Before setting any business up, it’s important to conduct thorough research of the market. It helps identify the areas of the sector that have scope and ways in which you can utilise it. For instance, if the demand for home-cooked Mangalorean cuisine is high in your city, you can capitalise on it and provide it. Also, performing an in-depth study of the market will help determine whether to start a regular tiffin service business or cater food occasionally on the weekend.

2. Work Space

Work Space For Tiffin Service Business

An average Indian kitchen is good enough to cook for 50 people. If you have a bigger kitchen or extra space, it’s an added advantage. Additionally, you can convert a small room into an office and use it well. Putting up a packaging station will help avoid chaos. Do thorough planning of what will go where and how to store things. You can buy foldable shelves, hooks to hang utensils and food containers that fit inside each other, helping you save valuable space.

3. Registration & License

Registration And License For Starting Tiffin Service

The next step is to get a food and safety license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This, however, applies to businesses making more than 12 lakh. It is important to register your business and obtain a Business License. You need to take a No Objection Certificate from your society/complex. Along with that, you will need to register the name of your venture. Here’s all you need to know about licenses for starting a tiffin service of food in India.

4. Investment

Investment For Starting Tiffin Service Business

To know how much to invest, you must first know the cost. Plan your meals and calculate the cost of it all. How much does it cost to provide a tiffin with roti , rice, dal , sabzi , and salad along with the cost of packaging? Costs borne by you will include the initial one-time investment and several recurring expenses. Also, you will need to invest in high-quality utensils and other cooking essentials.

5. Recurring Cost

Recurring Cost Involved In Starting Tiffin Service

Groceries, employees, cleaning and delivery charges are all recurring expenses. If you provide a tiffin at Rs 100, this should cover all these expenses. For delivery, you need to add extra charges. But make sure to establish a radius for delivery. Even if you do the majority of the cooking, it is wise to hire help. This person can help with prepping the food, cleaning, packaging and much more. Remember to add the cost of gas and electricity.

6. Insurance

Required Insurance For Starting Tiffin Service From Home

Just as we take up life or medical insurance in case something goes wrong, it’s vital to ensure your business as well. As mishap in business is possible, it’s better to safeguard in advance. Connect with a local insurance agent to discuss the best coverage you will likely require.

7. Safety & Hygiene

Safety And Hygiene Mechanism

There is nothing more important than hygiene in today’s times. As a tiffin provider, it becomes paramount to maintain a balance between taste and hygiene. Some of the measures that you can consider are regular pest control, using gloves while packing and cooking and sterilising the kitchen. Along with that, checking the body temperature of everyone who handles the food, using hand sanitiser and soap and wearing masks is mandatory.

8. Meal Plan

Meal Plan For Tiffin Service Business From Home

An easy way to avoid chaos is to plan your menu for each day of the week. Some people only take up weekdays or exclusively weekends to deliver tiffins. It’s best to chalk a plan, keeping in mind the availability of groceries, the season, the cooking time required and of course your customers’ preferences. There are several ways you can design your menu, like #VeganWednesday or serving one cuisine a day or even letting your customers order from a variety. It all depends on your food and how you anticipate business in your area.

9. Digital Help

Digital Help For Business Expansion

The best way to manage your tiffin business is through technology. You can set up an app or website to receive orders and tie up with a delivery service agency for efficient delivery. Also, you can make the best of an array of food delivery apps available in India. The major advantage of going digital is that you have digital data to plan your future decisions and expand your business.

10. Marketing & Advertising

Marketing And Advertising For Tiffin Service Business

Social media is all you need to showcase your venture and advertise it too. Several business ventures like fashion and jewellery retail businesses run only on social media. Create a brand account, post about your dishes, services and customer testimonials and see the difference. It will help you launch your business without any investment. Remember to keep posting regularly, engage with your audience and enjoy marketing free of cost.

6 Key Tips To Remember

  • Getting feedback from clients once a week or once every two weeks will be sufficient for making amends or making small changes.
  • Mention the ingredients used to avoid complaints from customers with specific food allergies or restrictions.
  • Choose your tiffin packaging wisely and brand it with the name and logo to create a great impression.
  • Conduct small menu-tasting sessions and collect this data to plan the meals.
  • Do change up the menu regularly to make it more dynamic.
  • Offer mini-tasting menus to your regular customers and get that vital feedback.

The food business will continue growing and be lucrative forever. What will set you apart from the competition is the quality of your food, the variety of expertise and the level of engagement with your customers. So let your inner goddess Annapurna take charge and motivate you to start your own tiffin service business. While food and catering businesses have great margins, they aren’t the only low-investment and high-profit business ideas that you can consider.

Tiffin service business ideas

There are several ways in which you can use your cooking skills to establish a tiffin service. Here are a few of the most viable options:

Starting and succeeding in this one is the easiest of the lot. You can ask your customers to subscribe to get tiffin delivered right to the office for all of the working days of the week if they pay a monthly fee. These cases usually have flexible menus that are up to the discretion of the service provider, meaning you. You simply need to make it delicious and home-cooked.

If you can reach both daytime and nighttime workers, you will have double the revenue and subsequent profit. It is sometimes possible to gain more customers by offering promotional offers, like a one-month free offer for a 12-month subscription, or a percentage discount when they subscribe for the entire year at once. If you pitch this idea to several office groups, you might be able to get bulk subscriptions for multiple employees in each office. Saving money on logistics would enable you to make a lot of profit.

It would be a smart move to launch an app for your business if you want to take your company to a wider audience. Build a comprehensive business app by hiring a reputed app development agency. Make sure you are clear and transparent about what you want in the app. A mobile app provides you with the opportunity to offer different packages to your customers under the same roof.

It is possible to give them the option of signing up for a monthly subscription or placing an order when necessary in real-time. Your customers can also select the dishes they want with an app-based tiffin delivery service. Don’t forget to keep the menu homely yet delicious. Try a couple of different cuisines instead of sticking to the same old stuff if you want to add some spice.

For example, you can serve Middle Eastern hummus and pita bread, Chinese home-cooked noodles, as well as Indian Dal and Roti under one roof. Keep to the dishes and cuisines you’re familiar with. Keep the number of options limited to what you can achieve in the given time if you are working alone or with a team.

If you think that only office workers order from tiffin services, you are mistaken. Many people prefer to order food rather than cook. They can also have goods delivered to their homes. The demographics of your target audience for this type of service will probably include working parents, college students, older people, etc.

Home food delivery service

Adding another layer to your usual tiffin service would be necessary to tap into this market. There is a possibility that these customers will not sign up for a monthly subscription. Therefore, an app is essential for reaching more people. If you are delivering all over the city and not targeting any particular neighborhood, you will need more delivery personnel as well.

It is possible that you’ll have to deliver during the weekend with this one. As a surprise meal box, you can keep something different like ‘Weekend Bonanza Chef’s Special’ and send them your best dishes. By offering these things, you will keep your customers’ attention, have them continue to use your service, and have them recommend it to their friends and family. Tiffin services are necessary for everyone in today’s world.

You can use a fitness-centric model to diverge from the regular route and chart a new course for yourself. The majority of those on a diet, whether they are losing weight or dealing with any other health condition, cannot invest the time and effort to prepare healthy meals as per their dietician’s recommendations.

Creating a business that promotes healthy eating is one way you can help people. You’d need a bit more expertise and manpower to accomplish this. However, if you are able to pull it off, it could be a huge success. It is necessary to have an app or a website for this service. Customers can upload their diet chart to your site, and you can then deliver their meal for the day to their door.

Startups have an abundance of resources and are more prevalent than ever before. It is not uncommon for investors to be on the lookout for the next best unique business idea. Your chances of pitching your business idea successfully and getting funding are higher if your idea is fresh.

13 Ohio Kohl's locations with Babies 'R' Us revealed. See which stores will have them

As Kohl's continues to move forward with its partnership with Babies "R" Us, the 13 Ohio locations for the collaboration have been released.

The Babies "R" Us inside Kohl's will be at these stores, according to their website :

  • Avon: 35906 Detroit Road
  • Beavercreek: 2850 Centre Dr.
  • Columbus: 4865 N Hamilton Road
  • Findlay: 2310 Tiffin Ave.
  • Grove City: 1548 Stringtown Road
  • Huber Heights: 8301 Troy Pike
  • Jackson Township: 5478 Dressler Road
  • Lima: 2750 Elida Road
  • Mentor: 9581 Mentor Ave.
  • Perrysburg: 10323 Fremont Pike
  • Pickerington: 175 Postage Dr.
  • Toledo: 4865 Monroe St.
  • Troy: 1869 W Main St.

In March, Kohl's announced a new partnership with WHP Global, the owner of Babies "R" Us, to bring the franchise to 200 Kohl's stores by the end of the year.

The stores plan to start opening in August.

The Babies 'R' Us at Kohl’s shop plans to feature an assortment of baby gear, furniture, activities, accessories, and more. Adjacent to the shop, customers will find Kohl’s existing baby and kids' apparel and other offerings from brands like Little Co. by Lauren Conrad, Jumping Beans, Carters, and Nike.

The Babies "R" Us stores will be within Kohl's stores, and each will be between 750 and 2,500 square feet.

Customers can also shop for an assortment of baby products on Kohls.com and use the Babies "R" Us registry to build and share gift lists.

Strategy follows Sephora model

The partnership with Babies 'R' Us follows a similar agreement Kohl's has with Sephora .

Over the past several years, Kohl's has been building out it's Sephora at Kohl's stores. Like its plan with Babies "R" Us, Kohl's started building out its Sephora stores in 2021 with 200 stores.

By the end of this year, more than 900 Sephora at Kohl's stores will be open nationwide, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel . Last year, overall sales at Sephora surpassed $1.4 billion, and the beauty retailer expects to have more than $2 billion in sales by 2025.

“We see significant opportunity in the baby gear category, and partnering with Babies 'R' Us is another example of how we are finding new ways to optimize our assortment and further establish Kohl’s as the go-to brand for families," said Tom Kingsbury, Kohl’s chief executive officer, in March, according to the Journal Sentinel.

Toys 'R' Us and Babies 'R' Us closed a few years ago. Is this a comeback?

After operating for 70 years, Toys "R" Us stores nationwide closed in June 2018, closing more than 700 locations and laying off 33,000 jobs .

The last thread that led to these closings was poor holiday sales. CEO Brandon said Toys "R" Us found itself "in serious default on our financing covenants" after a disastrous holiday season, according to a recording of the talk reviewed by The Record in Bergen County, New Jersey. For Christmas 2017, earnings were about half of what the company might expect in a normal year.

But was it really the end?

The iconic toy retailer posted two updates on its Facebook page the same year, indicating "a next chapter for Geoffrey and the iconic Toys "R" Us brands."

More: Game over for Toys R Us! All stores now closed, but is this really the end?
