King Nagarjuna is best known for his experimental and unique kind of films. He has always given his best when it comes to bringing new genre films to Tollywood. This time, he has joined hands with the stylish filmmaker Praveen Sattaru for an action thriller, The Ghost. The film hit the screens today on the eve of Dussehra. Let’s see how it is.

Vikram (Nagarjuna) is an Interpol officer who works along with his love interest Priya (Sonal Chauhan) in Dubai. While everything is going fine in his professional life, one incident disturbs Vikram mentally and he leaves Priya. One fine day, he receives a call from Anu (Gul Panag) stating a concern over her daughter Aditi’s life and she asks Vikram to solve the problem. Who is this Anu? Why did she seek the help of Vikram? Who is causing a threat to Anu and Aditi? Watch the film to know the answers.

Plus Points:

Nagarjuna is one of the very few actors who doesn’t shy away from doing different kinds of roles. He has proved this multiple times in his career. With The Ghost, the actor has once again shown his stamina. His performance as Vikram is one of the biggest assets of the film and the veteran actor carried the film on his shoulders from start to end.

The action sequences composed in this film are one of the best in recent times and definitely they deserve a special mention. They look stylish and give us goosebump moments. Also kudos to Nagarjuna for doing such risky stunts convincingly. The film is completely filled with many such terrific action scenes and this makes us glued to the screens.

Sonal Chauhan isn’t just restricted to the glamour element but her role has a good scope. Her efforts are visible in the action part and the actress did a fine job and impresses. The rest of the cast like Anika Surendran, Gul Panag, Ravi Varma, and Srikanth Iyengar did their part well.

Minus Points:

While the film is just so brilliant with the action part, the drama and the story isn’t that great and brings down the staggering impact created by fights. The emotional angle looks artificial and a bit forced and this does not connect us with the film that well.

The villain’s characterization is pretty weak in The Ghost. A solid villain was very much needed especially when the protagonist is going all guns blazing. Sadly, that doesn’t happen here. So we would get a feeling that the hero’s job is being done without much struggle.

The story gets predictable after a point in the latter hour and the screenplay from thereon doesn’t get any better to make the proceedings interesting. There are some mind-boggling scenes in between but the way they are placed doesn’t add much value.

Technical Aspects:

Bharatt-Saurabh’s music is decent in songs but when it comes to the background score by Mark K Robin, he did a fantastic job. The BGM in a few action blocks raises the curiosity and adds value. The cinematography by Mukesh G is extraordinary. Few frames are on the lines of Hollywood films and his work added huge depth to this action thriller.

The production values are staggering and the makers spent highly on the film to make it look elegant. As mentioned earlier, the action choreographers are the major assets and add the required depth besides giving adrenaline rush moments.

Coming to director Praveen Sattaru, he partly succeeded with The Ghost. While he was superb at handling the fight scenes, the core emotional part took a back seat. Had he taken more care on this part, things would have been a lot better. Also, his narrative isn’t that gripping in the latter hour which takes the film down.

On the whole, The Ghost is a partly engaging action thriller. Nagarjuna’s scintillating performance backed up by some world-class fight scenes are its strength. On the flip side, the lack of proper emotional scenes, weak antagonist, and predictable storyline make it a passable watch this weekend. If you love watching action flicks, give this film a shot but lower your expectations.

The Ghost Movie Review:

The Ghost Movie Review: High on body count, low on originality

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

2022 seems to be the year of swashbuckling spies, guns, and dead kids. While watching  The Ghost  it is hard to shake off the memories of  Vikram  and  Beast  in multiple instances. Similarities to one of these films should be leading to enjoyable results, right? Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. Every time we feel the film shows some promise, we are almost immediately given a reality check and told to keep our expectations under control. We keep rooting for the film to go a notch higher but it keeps refusing.

Director: Praveen Sattaru

Cast: Nagarjuna, Sonal Chouhan, Gul Panag, Anikha Surendran

Nagarjuna plays an Interpol officer named Vikram (his first film in 1986 was named Vikram, allow me to remind you) and he is introduced in an Arabian desert, taking down a battalion of a suspicious, unnamed group of militants. He is joined by Priya (Sonal Chouhan) and together they wipe the hell out of the bad guys. They take down the last man and instantaneously begin kissing as the action sequence segues into a romantic montage song that plants information about Vikram’s struggles with trauma and his dear relationship with his adopted family. It is a bit jarring and it assures you to gain momentum. The actual action begins—or you think so—after the song when Vikram and Priya are on a mission to rescue a kid from a bunch of kidnappers. It starts with an uninspiring chase and ends with a tragedy, propelling Vikram to take down the whole underworld. When the film’s title appears, we are brimming with excitement, but the pleasure is only momentary with our curiosity being put to rest almost immediately with a text, ‘5 years later’. What happened to Vikram’s rage and the mission he set out on? We have to wait for that. This, I believe, is the biggest problem with the film: its refusal to focus on the amusement—violence and action—and insistence to meander on a rather generic plotline for an excessive runtime.

We hope to see Vikram hunt down thugs of the underworld in style, but before we get to that, we have to sit through a painfully long and generic set-up that features the protagonist double up as a guardian for his sister-like Anu (Gul Panag) and her reckless daughter Adithi (Anika Surendran). The conflict is not just bad guys after their lives but boardroom politics too. I would be lying if I say I wasn’t reminded of Trivikram’s recent films where the conflict is all about shares and stocks in a company. These portions of the film make you restless to see the action we signed up for.

When the film eventually enters the action zone in the final 35 minutes, it is entertaining, despite lacking inventiveness. The reveal about the origin of Vikram’s sobriquet, 'The Ghost’ is strongly reminiscent of the Babayaga story from  John Wick (2014). It is a concerned father warning his son about the repercussions of the grave mistake the latter has committed in both films. The highly hyped-up Katana sword is put to terrific effect here with dozens of glorious kills in the second half. The final 30 minutes of the film, suffused with bodies, blood, knives and guns, serve as a much-needed departure from the generic-ness that pervaded the set-up and the pay-off is indeed a treat to behold.

Dharmendra Kakarala’s editing complements the action choreography by Dinesh Subbarayan and Kecha Khamphadkee superbly in the effective flashback sequence, collectively infusing energy into the overall mood. Mukesh G’s choice to punctuate red in an action sequence—featuring a blood red moon—set in a boat with neon lighting, darkness, and silhouettes in other action sequences lend a wonderful style to the whole origin story. The wide image of a hooded man holding a sword in the rain while dozens kneel before him, begging for mercy, is perhaps the best frame in the film. I wish  The Ghost  was actually about… the ghost and less about Vikram and boardroom politics.

The action sequences are delightfully violent—bodies are chopped into pieces with the sword, a thug is beheaded and then his head is shot, making it explode like a watermelon, and there are countless headshots—and almost rescue the film. However, I wish there was a stronger purpose to the action here. The climactic action sequence, set in a church, is superbly shot but you can’t help but wonder about the futility of the whole sequence. The need for action and violence is barely registered, reducing the sequence to a deliberately crafted set-piece for the sake of spectacle.

While we naturally accept to suspend our disbelief when we walk into a movie theatre,  The Ghost  expects a tad too much from us, barely trying to care for the reality. Physics is secondary; it is fine if the hero dodges all the hundreds of bullets. Emotions are primary; shouldn’t a person who is raging with sadness and anger at least attempt to take a shot at someone when he is in a position to, instead of waiting for the hero to finish off every man standing? Such glaring direction errors break the interest the film just managed to grab from us.

If there’s someone in the cast who gets the best deal after Nagarjuna, it is Sonal Chouhan, who puts up a surprisingly effective show in the action sequences. She is believable and moreover, not once does her character seek help from the man here. She always saves herself and others. Sad that she couldn't save the whole film though.

The Ghost  is, in a way, a quintessential revenge drama that’s packaged with the flourishes of a modern-day actioner. To rehash a classic review line—just like the film is a rehash of many films—The Ghost is an old bullet in a new gun. It could have been what  Vikram  was to Kamal Haasan, but ends up being what  Beast  was to Vijay.

King Nagarjuna’s latest film, The Ghost, which has been carrying good expectations around it, directed by Praveen Sattaru, has been released today, on the occasion of Dussehra. Let’s take a look at how the film is.

Vikram (Nagarjuna) is an interpol cop works on a contractual basis. Movie starts with glimpses of his past, as we navigate through his present he is seen protecting his sister and niece. Nagarjuna goes after the underworld in Dubai in his past. Why he has to protect his sister, how his past is linked to present and what finally happens forms the rest of the story.

On-Screen Performances:

As usual, Nagarjuna is good in his role, carrying the entire movie on his shoulders, but to no avail in the end. He looks good and is effortless even in the action sequences. Sonal Chauhan is perfect in her role as well.

Gul Panag and Anikha Surendran, who are seen in key roles, do well in their roles, and the sequences they share with Nag are interesting.

The rest of the cast is good in what they’re given, including Ravi Varma, Srikanth Iyengar and Jaya Prakash.

Off-Screen Talents:

Director Praveen Sattaru takes a familiar concept, but gives his own spin, in The Ghost. His screenplay is tight in parts, while it lags a bit in the others. The director is known for his unique mark in films, which seems lacking in The Ghost, with several sequences feeling like they’ve been stretched too thin.

The background score in the first half of the film is especially good, elevating every scene of the movie, and so are the action sequences. However, they get too much in the second half, disconnecting the audience from the rest of the story.

The cinematography of the film is top-notch, and so are the production values, which are very clearly shown throughout the entire film. The editing could have been a lot crisper though.

Plus Points

  • BGM in the first half
  • Few action sequences

Minus Points

  • Too much action in the second half
  • Lack of emotional connect

The Ghost is burdened with too many action sequences in the second half and very little emotional connect. The movie doesn’t carry director Praveen Sattaru’s mark, passable in bits and pieces, and can even test your patience through its runtime.

Strictly for action movie lovers. No strong story line. Screenplay was good. Cinematography is nice. Nagarjuna’s show from beginning to end. Simran and Anikha gets crucial roles but doesn’t create the emotional impact. Action scenes are top notch. If you are an action movie lover, give this a try. For others, one time watchable..

The Ghost Review: Nothing To Boast

The Ghost Review: Nothing To Boast

Movie: The Ghost Rating: 2/5 Banner: Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP Cast: Nagarjuna, Sonal Chauhan, Gul Panag, Anikha Surendran, Manish Chaudhari, Ravi Varma, Srikanth Iyengar, Bilal Hossein and others  Music: Bharatt-Saurabh, Mark K Robin Director of Photography: Mukesh G Editor: Dharmendra kakarala Action: Dinesh Subbarayan, Kecha Producers: Suniel Narang, Puskur Ram Mohan Rao, Sharrath Marar Written and directed by: Praveen Sattaru Release Date: October 5, 2022

Nagarjuna Akkineni and director Praveen Sattaru have teamed up for the first time. The film’s trailer and teasers created a lot of interest.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: After a failed mission, Interpol officers Vikram (Nagarjuna) and Priya (Sonal Chauhan) part ways. They also break up their relationship. Vikram also quits his job.

Five years later, he gets a call from his estranged sister Anu (Gul Panag). He heads to Ooty and finds that his sister and his niece (Anikha Surendran) are under threat.

Vikram agrees to stay there and protect them. Anu is a chairperson of a huge business empire. Another company is trying to take over Anu’s company. Despite his efforts, Anu gets killed in an attack.

Will Vikram protect his niece safely?

Artistes’ Performances: For senior Nagarjuna, the role is a cakewalk. He has done such roles in the past. All he does in the film is wields swords, blast ammunition, and indulge in shootouts.

Sonal Chauhan appears as an Interpol officer. She does some decent action stunts. Gul Panag plays a typical sister’s role.

Anikha Surendran plays the role of rich brat convincingly.

Technical Excellence: Mukesh’s cinematography is terrific. More than anyone else, the stunt masters have more work to do in the film, and they excel in their jobs. The background score is apt. Editing lacks sharpness as the lengthy action episodes go on and on.

Highlights: Initial portions One or two action sequences

Drawback: Clichéd story Dated and artificial sentiment     Series of fights Mindless climax sequence

Analysis We all know that story takes a backseat in action dramas. But when the wafer-thin plot serves as an excuse to flip one action sequence to another, it feels dated. “The Ghost” is one such example.

Praveen Sattaru who won the name for his slick execution of “PSV Garuda Vega '' wrote a one paragraph story. An Interpol officer who quit the job gets a personal assignment of saving his sister from the enemies. Praveen Sattaru has not developed any worth talking about moments other than this one-line story and filled it with a series of action stunts.

One action sequence is set in a desert, the other on the busy city roads and the next one in a hill station. Another one is in a house. The next one is in another place. The locations change, and the scenes change, but the crux remains the same: a fight scene.

No film in recent times has come with a series of action stunts with little to no story. Furthermore, given all the hype around threats that the hero’s sister faces, we expect a strong antagonist who might prove to be more than a match to the hero Nagarjuna, but what we get is a cardboard villain character.

To be fair, the first half of the film at least has some reasoning as it focuses on Nagarjuna’s Interpol days and a brief flashback about his family. The second half is a mess. The climax is excruciatingly bad.

By adding “KGF”-like machine gun sequences and Kamal Haasan’s Vikram-like fight scenes, Praveen Sattaru has spoiled it further. For a film that also talks about sister and niece, the sentiment scenes are superficial.

The blame entirely lies on Praveen Sattaru. It is his lame writing that is the villain.

On the whole, “The Ghost” is another senseless action drama with no effective storytelling.

Bottom Line:  Frightens the audience

The thing about ghost stories is that they usually have such limited imaginations. If a spirit were indeed able to exist in two realms at the same time - to occupy the spirit world while still involving itself in our designs here in the material universe - wouldn't it be aghast with glory and wonder? Wouldn't it transcend the pathetic little concerns of daily life? To put it another way: If you could live in the mind of God, would you still be telling your wife she's wearing the T-shirt you spilled the margarita on? "Ghost" is no worse an offender than most ghost movies, I suppose. It assumes that even after death we devote most of our attention to unfinished business here on Earth, and that danger to a loved one is more important to a ghost than the infinity it now inhabits. Such ideas are a comfort to us. We like to picture our dear ones up there on a cloud, eternally "looking down" on us, so devoted that they would rather see what we're cooking for dinner than have a chat with Aristotle or Elvis.

In "Ghost," Patrick Swayze plays an investment counselor who is killed by a mugger one night, but remains on the scene in his spirit form to observe as his lover ( Demi Moore ) weeps and mourns and then attempts to piece her life together. Swayze has an important piece of information he needs to get to her: His death was not an act of random urban violence, but a contract murder. He was about to stumble across a multimillion-dollar scheme to launder drug money, and that's why he was murdered. Now Moore is in danger.

This plot takes place in the world of upscale Manhattan yuppies. Swayze and Moore inhabit a loft apartment so luxurious that he must be making a fortune at his job (or maybe she's doing well with her art pottery business). That's why, after Swayze's death, Moore doesn't believe it when a self-appointed psychic (Whoopi Goodberg) contacts her with messages from beyond the grave. What's amazing is that Goldberg really is able to hear every word Swayze says to her - even though she has no previous record of genuine psychic powers.

That's how we get around to the description of the T-shirt with the margarita stains. Swayze has to feed Goldberg so much personal information that Moore is forced to believe that the communications are genuine. This he does to a fault. One of the irritations of "Ghost" is that the Moore character is such a slow study. Over and over again, Goldberg tells her things only her lover could possibly have known, and over and over again, Moore disbelieves her - she trusts the villain, instead. We are treading here on the edge of the Idiot Plot.

"Ghost" does, however, make a nice mixture of horror and humor, especially in the scenes involving Goldberg and her sisters (Gail Boggs and Armelia McQueen). The film's biggest puzzlement involves the exact status of Swayze's spiritual sojourn in this world.

Is he in heaven's holding pattern? Must he protect his lover before he can ascend that tunnel of light into the sky? What about his ability to interact with the physical world? At first he walks right through everything, but later, after tutelege from his fellow dead, he learns simple parlor tricks - like picking up a penny - and of course by the end of the movie he is able to beat the hell out of the bad guy.

The movie's single best scene - one that does touch the poignancy of the human belief in life after death - comes when Swayze is able to take over Goldberg's body, to use her physical presence as an instrument for caressing the woman that he loves. (In strict logic, this should involve us seeing Goldberg kissing Moore, but of course the movie compromises and shows us Swayze holding her - too bad, because the logical version would actually have been more spiritual and moving.) Then there is the obligatory action climax, necessary in all mass-market entertainments these days, and a particularly ridiculous visitation from the demons of hell.

"Ghost" contains some nice ideas, and occasionally, for whole moments at a time, succeeds in evoking the mysteries that it toys with.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Review: A Great Continuation & Epic Beginning

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a worthy follow-up to the Caesar trilogy that skews closer to the original 1968 film and sets up a new trilogy.

  • Fantastic VFX and motion capture performances bring the Apes saga to a whole new level of realism.
  • A fresh take on the franchise both continues its mythology and also sets up the foundations for a gripping study of civilization, violence, and the human condition.
  • Long runtime and slow start aside, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is almost exactly what we want from a summer blockbuster.

Planet of the Apes was one of the first major sci-fi franchises. The original was a groundbreaking film, and it soon launched a five-film series and a television spin-off, and was one of the first merchandised films. It would be 28 years between the release of 1973's Battle for the Planet of the Apes and Tim Burton's disappointing 2001 reimagining . After over three decades on ice and a big-budget remake failing to capture audience attention, it seemed to many like this franchise was a relic of the past .

This made the box office and critical success of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes a massive surprise. What seemed like another attempt to cash in on a piece of IP with a grounded realistic prequel turned out to be an incredibly moving story that reflected how people's perceptions have changed. Thanks to a combination of an incredible motion capture performance by Andy Serkis and the hard work of VFX artists at Weta Digital, Rise of the Planet of the Apes brought the franchise into the 21st century . Its two sequels, 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes , somehow did the impossible, topping the first film and creating a great trilogy .

That certainly put a lot of pressure on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes . When it was first announced, there were fears that the studio would milk the franchise for all its worth after an excellent ending for what is now known as The Caesar trilogy. The absence of Caesar actor Andy Serkis only compounded fears that a fourth film would sully the reputation of the previous trilogy . Thankfully, under the direction of Wes Ball and screenwriter Josh Friedman, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes not only builds off the foundation laid forth by the Caesar trilogy but also blazes an exciting new path that moves the franchise in directions that nobody has truly grappled with in a new first installment in an exciting new trilogy .

Full Blown Planet of the Apes

Kingdom of the planet of the apes.

  • Incredible special effects and motion capture performances make the fantasy real.
  • A very thoughtful, exciting study of civilzation with excellent characters
  • Kevin Durand and Peter Macon are especially fantastic.
  • The film is too long, with a slow opening.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place 300 years after the death of Caesar in War for the Planet of the Apes . Ape civilizations have emerged while humans have regressed into a feral, primitive state. The story follows Noa (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee who, after an encounter with a mysterious human woman named Mae (Freya Allen), sees his village attacked by the troops of ape king Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand).

Proximus has twisted the words of Caesar to create a new kingdom made up of ape colonies he has conquered while looking to attain human technology to make himself stronger. Noa, alongside Mae and an orangutan named Raka (Peter Macon), a member of an order who looks to follow the original teachings of Caesar, goes to save Noa's family from Proximus' clutches while also uncovering hidden truths about their world. At the same time, Mae guards her secret that could change the planet forever.

With Rise of the Planet of the Apes being the birth of a revolution, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes being a political war movie, and War for the Planet of the Apes having a lot in common with prison escape movies, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a classic hero's journey. This fourth film has been compared to A New Hope , and that comparison is certainly appropriate as, more so than any other film in the series, this is a mythic quest . It involves a young individual leaving the safety of their home, encountering a wise old figure, and gaining new companions while also realizing the world they knew is not what they thought, and are forever changed by it.

Great Caesar's Ghost

Despite Caesar's death in the previous film, his presence looms over this movie considerably . Whereas the last three films were about the life story of Caesar, seeing the rise and eventual death of the ape that would change the world, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes treats him like a biblical figure. He is now the stuff of myth and legend. While some apes like Raka follow his teachings closely as a sort of religious order, others, like Proximus, have twisted his words and teachings to suit his own goals.

Much like how Julius Caesar's name eventually morphed into a title, so has the ape Caesar's name, with Proximus using the great ape leader's words to spread his power and make himself a deity to other apes. This push and pull between Raka following the old text and Proximus twisting the meaning calls to mind various religious organizations and gives the film the feeling of a biblical epic.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes asks what happens to ape civilization when Caesar is gone, as there is no ape who grew up alongside humans to broker peace. A second question follows, and it's one that appears to be the building block for this new planned trilogy of films : what happens after The Planet of the Apes ? Not in the sense of a literal sequel like blowing up the Earth, as seen in Beneath the Planet of the Apes , but what happens when the apes win and dominate the planet? Is there peace, or will apes make the same mistakes as various human civilizations ? Can humans and apes share the world, given all their history? With these new ideas in play, the franchise, like humanity and apes, must now evolve.

Planet of the Apes: Facts you Didn't Know About the Franchise

Peter macon and kevin durand as raka and proximus.

Peter Macon steals the show as Raka . The wise mentor figure to Noa also serves as a great character to explain the prior films in the franchise for an audience who might be coming into this movie for their first film. He also gets some incredible laugh-out-loud moments that certainly bring a sense of humor to the proceedings.

Kevin Durand, as Proximus Caesar, is a terrifying villain . Despite not appearing until late in the film, his presence is felt throughout, and he makes the most of his screen time as a showy king, clamoring for the spotlight while also exploiting those beneath him so that he can gain power. He looks to harness human technology that makes him akin to an evil(er) version of King Louie from The Jungle Book , but instead of man's red fire, he wants guns and tanks. Between this and Abigail , Durand is having a great year and getting the attention he has often been overlooked for.

Here’s What Every Planet of the Apes Movie Made at the Box Office

The highs and lows of starting a new franchise.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ' biggest struggle to overcome is its runtime. At two hours and 25 minutes, it is the longest entry in the franchise . The movie uses this runtime to explore a wide variety of themes and lays breadcrumbs for the sequels in bold, fresh ways that show this series, which, after all these years, still has plenty of untapped potential. While it lays the groundwork for future films, it's hard to argue that the movie doesn't start to feel its runtime, especially in its first third.

Another stumbling block it encounters is with its two main characters, Noe and Mae. For the first half, Noa feels a little ill-defined and doesn't really come into his own until he encounters Raka and Mae. Mae, on the other hand, is keeping both Noa and, by extension, the audience at a distance, so it feels difficult to get a read on her. This is obviously by design, as she is a character shrouded in mystery. She is meant to keep the audience guessing.

Luckily, both characters find their footing in the second act, and by the time the credits roll, they are both in a fascinating place that sets up the next entry in the series. The movie makes it very clear that Noa is not Caesar and will be going down a different path, while Mae is a new spin on a human protagonist in these films, which makes her unpredictable. Any more details would be a spoiler, but Mae is the best example of drawing from the franchise's past. Instead of making the obvious fan-service move, the film engages with material in a way that evolves the franchise.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Expands the Franchise for Kids

In many ways, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is undoubtedly closer in setup to the original Planet of the Apes film than the three films preceding it. This is a movie that takes place as apes have formed their civilizations and cultures, and humans are feral and a nearly extinct species. The movie certainly has a great deal of fun playing with the iconography of the original film, from apes on horseback catching humans in nets to very obvious homages (characters on a beach, for instance).

The film's primarily ape cast also means it has the potential to be the most appealing to younger children . This shouldn't be surprising, as children were a big part of why the original Planet of the Apes films in the late '60s and '70s became such an extremely merchandisable franchise. But up until now, the 21st century entries in the franchise so far have moved to older audiences. This isn't to say Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is immature; in fact, the film tackles many complex themes. But the emphasis on the primate protagonist means kids can be drawn more into the movie and even absorb some of the more significant ideas at play, as long as they can deal with the film's running time.

Welcome to the New Age of Apes

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a worthy follow-up to the Caesar trilogy . Even though it might not live up to the heights of its three predecessors, that is less a knock against this film and more just the high bar the trilogy set. The first film in a trilogy always has the burden of extra exposition, and even with that weakness, this film is still very good and much better than most summer blockbusters, showing that the batting average for this series is impressively high.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is thoughtful and audacious in a way that is fresh compared to other big sci-fi IPs. It feels like a miracle that they can get away with this. There are sweet scenes of characters carrying on a conversation, and thanks to the incredible VFX team at Weta, Wes Ball's direction, and the actor's performance, you forget that the scene is being carried out by apes. On paper, it sounds silly and should not work, but it does, incredibly well, and speaks to how powerful movies can be. The fantasy feels real.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is what audiences should want from a summer blockbuster . It is bold, daring, and not afraid to pose thoughtful questions to its viewers. It both picks up on the previous films and is an excellent entry point into the franchise for newcomers. The movie works as a standalone piece, and its final moments will undoubtedly excite fans for the future and what lies in store for the heroes. Caesar's story might be over, but a new epic chapter has begun in the Planet of the Apes franchise, and if it keeps moving at this pace, audiences could soon be looking at a rare great six-chapter series.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters on May 10, 2024.

Science fiction has always been a fertile genre for telling stories that revolve around mysteries. From Ridley Scott’s classic Blade Runner to Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell , sci-fi and mystery go together as perfectly as a culprit’s hand in a blood-stained glove. Mars Express , the debut feature from French animator-director Jérémie Périn, is further proof of the connection, by taking the basic elements of a Chinatown -esque story about a missing person and a deadly conspiracy, and iterating on them in the far-flung world of colonized space filled with sentient machines and bleeding-edge technology.

Set in the 23rd century, the film follows Aline Ruby and Carlos Rivera, a pair of private eyes dispatched to Earth to bring in a hacker accused of jailbreaking robots, effectively unshackling them from the safeguards created to keep them docile and subservient to humans. When their investigation hits an unexpected dead end, Aline and Carlos accept another case, this one concerning a college student who mysteriously went missing after her roommate was murdered in their dorm room. In true noir fashion, the pair steadily discover that the two seemingly separate cases are not only in fact deeply intertwined, but pertinent to a plot that threatens the foundations of human-robot society.

A blonde-haired woman in a yellow trench coat kneels next to a white haired woman covered in blue liquid across from a leg-less robot standing on its hands in Mars Express.

Since the late 2000s, Périn has steadily made a name for himself as one of the most creative, boundary-pushing directors in French animation for his work on shows including Lastman , the animated comedy short series Merci Satan , and NSFW music videos for artists like the Flaming Lips, DyE, and Flairs. With Mars Express , Périn leans wholesale into his anime-inspired sensibilities and aesthetic to create a mature, grounded, and thoroughly imagined cyberpunk universe rife with shady characters, dazzling metropolitan vistas, and electrifying action sequences. It’s not just an entertaining sci-fi thriller, it’s a thoughtful rumination on the future of human labor, planned obsolescence, and the uneasy potential of the technological singularity.

Fans of 2023’s Scavengers Reign will no doubt vibe with Mars Express ’ art direction. While the movie is far from Scavengers Reign ’s ecologically focused survival thriller, both Périn’s film and Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner’s animated series share a common touchpoint in their ligne claire -influenced character designs and environments. Mars Express ’ vision of the far future is heavily indebted to our present, with the modernist Zaha Hadid -esque architecture of Mars’ capital city, Noctis, juxtaposed against the pollution-choked urban sprawl of Earth.

A woman in a yellow raincoat walking down a neon-lit street in a futuristic city in Mars Express.

The attention to detail dedicated to the film’s worldbuilding also extends to its many android characters, each with their own unique design and personality. The comparison to Scavengers Reign isn’t arbitrary: Jonathan Djob Nkondo, who worked as a character artist and designer on that series, also contributed robot designs for Mars Express .

The film’s protagonists are compelling and charismatic, but they also reflect the filmmakers’ intentions to create a sci-fi noir mystery that pushes the genre forward. Aline Ruby is a sympathetic mess in a way that’s unusual for animated female characters. A recovering alcoholic with a deadpan sense of humor and a dogged dedication to her job, Aline oozes loneliness and yearning for human connection in a way that makes her fascinating to watch.

A robot with a holographic head and a red arm points to a screen next to a blonde haired woman in a trenchcoat in a futuristic vehicle in Mars Express.

The same appeal is matched, if not outright eclipsed, by her partner Carlos, if only because he’s the resurrected consciousness of her dead partner, holographically preserved in an android body. Carlos is, for all intents and purposes, still Carlos, but his new life as a cybernetic entity complicates his material existence and rights in human/robot society, as well as his overall sense of identity. Estranged from his ex-wife and dogged by uncertainties about his place in the world, Carlos is pivotal in anchoring the audience’s understanding of Mars Express ’ themes and ideas.

Mars Express is the rare example of an animated feature that warrants an almost immediate rewatch upon completion, if only to appreciate the craftsmanship of its presentation. It’s a densely layered sci-fi story that’s light on proper nouns, but heavy on subtext. It’s set in a world that doesn’t tell so much as it shows the depth of its narrative and worldbuilding, by trusting its audience to pay close attention and connect the dots alongside the film’s characters. In short, it’s a rare example of “adult” animation that treats its audience like adults, and its execution elevates its premise until it stands confidently as one of the year’s best animated features.

Mars Express opens in select theaters nationwide on May 3.

Three years following the events in Summerville, Oklahoma, Callie Spengler, along with her boyfriend Gary Grooberson, her children Trevor and Phoebe, and their friends Lucky Domingo and Podcast, move to New York City to assist Winston Zeddemore and Ray Stantz in reviving the Ghostbusters. While the group successfully captures a ghost in Hell’s Kitchen, Mayor Walter Peck threatens to shut them down. In response, Callie decides to sideline Phoebe, who is underage. Upset by this decision, Phoebe seeks solace in playing chess at a nearby park, where she encounters and befriends Melody, a ghost chess prodigy who perished in a fire.

Meanwhile, Ray and Podcast procure cursed objects for examination. They acquire a mysterious brass orb from Nadeem Razmaadi, suspecting it to be an apotropaic trap. However, the orb emits a psionic pulse that damages the ecto-containment unit at the Ghostbusters’ headquarters. Winston takes the orb to his paranormal research center, where Dr. Lars Pinfield attempts to extract spiritual energy from it without success. To unravel the orb’s mysteries, Trevor, Lucky, and Pinfield visit Nadeem, who reveals its significance. Peter Venkman discovers Nadeem’s latent pyrokinetic abilities during their interaction.

Simultaneously, Ray, accompanied by Phoebe and Podcast, seeks information from Dr. Hubert Wartzki at the New York Public Library. Wartzki reveals the orb’s connection to four sorcerers known as the Firemasters and their imprisonment of Garraka, a demonic god seeking world domination. Phoebe learns about her ancestry’s involvement in containing Garraka and his vulnerability to copper alloys combined with fire.

When Phoebe’s involvement with the Ghostbusters becomes a target for Peck, she runs away with Melody to Winston’s research center. Using the extraction equipment, Phoebe projects herself as a ghost to communicate with Melody. However, Melody reveals her treachery, aiding Garraka in exchange for passage to the afterlife. Phoebe inadvertently frees Garraka, leading to chaos as he freezes the city and plans to release the ghosts from the containment unit.

In a desperate attempt to stop Garraka, the Ghostbusters, along with Nadeem, gear up for a showdown. Phoebe modifies her proton pack with copper alloys to combat Garraka, while Melody assists Nadeem in harnessing his powers against the god. Despite Garraka’s strength, the team manages to trap him with the ruptured containment unit, with Melody redeeming herself before departing for the afterlife.

As the city returns to normalcy, the Ghostbusters are hailed as heroes, with Peck compelled to support them and reinstate Phoebe. The team embarks on a mission to recapture the escaped ghosts across New York City.

'The Ghost' movie review: High on body count, low on originality

A still from the film 'The Ghost'

2022 seems to be the year of swashbuckling spies, guns, and dead kids. While watching The Ghost it is hard to shake off the memories of Vikram and Beast in multiple instances. Similarities to one of these films should be leading to enjoyable results, right? Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. Every time we feel the film shows some promise, we are almost immediately given a reality check and told to keep our expectations under control. We keep rooting for the film to go a notch higher but it keeps refusing.

'The Goat Life' Movie Review

After impressing the telugu audience as varadharaja mannar in ‘salaar’, malayalam star hero prithviraj sukumaran has brought the ‘the goat life’ to us.

The Goat Life Movie Review

Cast : Prithviraj Sukumaran, Amala Paul, Jimmy Jean-Louis, K R Gokul and others.

Music : AR Rahman

Cinematography : Sunil KS

Story : Benyamin

Producer : Blessy, Jimmy Jean – Louis and Steven Adams

Writer – Director : Blessy

After impressing the Telugu audience as Varadharaja Mannar in ‘Salaar’, Malayalam star hero Prithviraj Sukumaran has brought the ‘The Goat Life’ to us. He worked very hard on this movie and the entire team worked for more than 4 years on this project. It is releasing in multiple languages and the trailer attracted a lot of true movie lovers. Let us see how it turned out.

Najeeb (Prithviraj Sukumaran) is a very common man who hails from the rural parts of Telangana. He is not educated but leads his life happily with his mother and pregnant wife. With the desire of living a better life with his family, he decides to go to Saudi Arabia for work. He takes the help of a friend who arranges a visa for him. Upon reaching Saudi Arabia, he realises that he along with another person are conned. They are made slaves in the desert. They go through a lot of atrocities and they are made to work like animals in that place. They lead a very hard life and Najeeb reaches a point where he couldn’t even recognise himself after a few years. What did Najeeb do to get out of that place and how will be reach his family at the end forms the rest of the story.

In the world of cinema, there is one film in each genre that will set a benchmark for the rest. It becomes a reference point when we talk about such movies. When it comes to survival dramas, the first film people talk about is ‘Cast Away’. It revolves around a person who gets deserted in an unknown region for years trying to come out of it and go to his home. Everyone will be moved by this movie and we can now say that there is a great survival drama in Indian cinema too. A few attempts were made in this genre but ‘The Goat Life’ is a diamond that should be celebrated. It is a wonder if you have the heart to enjoy such a movie. We don’t feel that it is fictional cinema as we see a person’s story happening in front of our eyes. The feeling we get while seeing Najeeb and his personal struggle is inexplicable. The major warning to everyone is that people who want regular entertainer should stay away from this movie. It is a movie filled with sorrows, tears, hope and angst. We cry for a few scenes and some people cannot bear to see the struggle of the protagonist.

We get restless but at the same time we get motivated about life. This movie shows what hope can make a person do and how he can fight all the odds to live. It shows how hard life is for some people and our worries are nothing in front of them. We need a lot of patience to watch ‘The Goat Life’ which is around three hours long. It is tough to watch a survival drama filled with sadness throughout for many but if we connect to the hero, the three hours will not bore you a bit. We get drenched in emotions and it will haunt you for the next couple of days. Many opine that people living in Gulf countries earn a lot of money and they can lead a happy life but it is big question regarding the kind of life they life. No one answers to this. Only a few get good jobs and the rest do regular chores to lead life while others get deceived by brokers and end up as slaves to sheikhs. Such a man who loses everything decides to fight against everything an go home. It is the story of ‘Goat Life’. It is based on a novel and the three hour film makes you weep and restless too. That is why Blessy made it more interesting and engaging with his screenplay.

He starts with the hero getting conned and deceived and then starts going back and forth by showing present and past lives. The shot were he shows the hero struggling for a glass of water and how he used to live happily in the seashore despite not having any money at time is very impactful. He even shows how the lack of interaction with people can turn a person and Prithviraj did a brilliant job in showcasing it in a realistic manner. The director’s poetic touch can be seen in the hero-heroine son. The minute detailing is wonderful and there are many scenes that have an indirect symbolism and deeper meaning. The first half moves on a quicker note while the second half tests your patience a bit. There is nothing wrong in that as the hero is seen travelling through the dessert in the second half. The intensity is maintained throughout and it is tough to see those sorrows at times. The ending scenes are very emotional and touches your heart. Everyone may not like it but ‘Goat Life’ is magical for people who can enjoy such movies.

Performances :

What should we say about Prithviraj Sukumaran? We get surprised seeing him in this character. We wonder if he is the same Varadharaja Mannar from ‘Salaar’ or not. It is quite hard to believe that a big star like him accepted this movie. Only a person with a limitless passion for acting can take up such roles. Despite working on various films, he managed to stay in this character for so long and maintain the same mood throughout the shooting stage which is extraordinary. The makeup looks so natural and Prithviraj’s nuanced acting showcased the change in body language over time. He even showed aging through his voice modulation. He should be saluted for his dedication and he deserves a lot of awards for this movie. Amala Paul is good in her role. The two actors who travel along with the protagonist have also done a fantastic job. The rest of the actor were apt in their roles.

Technicians :

AR Rahman is not in great form lately but he showcased why he is one of the greatest composers ever through this movie. His background score for ‘Goat Life’ is wonderful and squeezes your heart with his music. He played a vital role in taking the emotions to the next level. Though the songs are not that catchy, his re-recording makes sure that he showcases his standard to everyone. We get a feeling that this is an international film that we are witnessing in front of us. The camera work is brilliant and the production values are splendid. Director Blessy made sure that his dream project was made in the way he wanted without any compromises. His work is seen on screen. His craft in making a three-hour movie out of this thin storyline showcases his caliber. This is a director’s film from start to end.

Verdict : ‘The Goat Life: An Experience That Should Be Witnessed!

Verdict: On the whole, The Ghost is a partly engaging action thriller. Nagarjuna's scintillating performance backed up by some world-class fight scenes are its strength.
