RMS math teachers utilize Internet, assign homework online

Chris Sedlacek , Staff Reporter | February 18, 2015

Revere Middle School homework is being offered online for students and could prompt the high school to do the same.

The RMS math department is offering all homework online for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Eighth grade math teacher Lori Weigand spoke of the program’s beginnings.

“All the middle school teachers and administration were investigating different avenues that would better suit teaching,” Weigand said.

Online homework started last year for sixth and seventh grade students and began this year for eighth grades. RMS utilizes the myMath Universe Digits program to do homework online. The program allows homework to be done on computers and mobile devices. Weigand explained that the program offers a “help” button ifstudents “get stuck.” It also tells the student if the answer is correct and if he or she understands the concept. Weigand commented on how online homework started.

“Sixth and seventh graders started with the Digits online homework program, and now are doing their homework online,” Weigand said.

Weigand mentioned that the online homework prepares students for the Common Core tests the students will be taking later in high school because these tests are digital as well.

Although Weigand believes some students have enjoyed the program, the program is not set in stone to be implemented into the high school. High school math teacher Brian Racin talked of possibilities of online homework at the high school.

“The online homework as of right now is not going to be implemented at the high school. [That is] not to say it will not be down the road, but with the new implementations of the Common Core standards , we’re still looking for [resources], whether it be a book or online book… that are truly geared toward the common core standards. So far those are not out there, and we’re not purchasing,” Racin said.

As of now, there are no plans to implement the program of online homework at the high school.

School rating (community visitors).

  • Currently 1.00/5

Rating: 1.0 /5 (1 vote cast)

TrueSchools Ratings

School ratings are based on state standardized test scores and comparing those results to other schools in the same state. TrueSchools ratings range from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest school rating and 1 being the lowest. Ratings are meant to give an overview of a school's performance in the most recent state standardized tests TrueSchools has records for.

Each school's rating is determined by comparing it's test scores to those of other schools in the same state. Composite scores are determined by combining a school's results for each test and grade and weighting scores by the number of students taking each test. Tests taken by fewer than 10 students are not calculated in the composite score.

Private Schools & Schools Without Ratings

Private schools do not have ratings because private schools are not obligated to report their test scores to the public. Some public schools may not have ratings because either the school did not report its results, the results were incomplete or there was not enough data available to calculate an accurate rating.

Other Criteria to Consider

Keep in mind ratings are solely based on a school's performance on its state's standardized tests. Ratings do not take into account other important factors you should consider when evaluating a school. Such factors include class sizes and student-teacher ratios, the quality of teachers and amount of personal attention given to each student, school programs and extracurricular activities provided, amount of funding a school receives and how much is spent per student and other available resources. These are among a few of the qualities to consider when choosing a school to send your child to. [close window]
