London Bucket List

13 Symbols of London

Are you interested to know some symbols of London?

The English capital of London is widely recognized as a global metropolis. As such, it features abundant examples of contemporary art, cool cultural activities, interesting historical sites, beautiful parks, and fascinating traditions.

London is famous for many things, including Harry Potter, the Beatles, James Bond, the Royal Family, Tower Bridge (not to be confused with the London Bridge), double-decker buses, and tea.

Whether you’ve been to London or not, you’ve probably seen at least a few of these sights on postcards or other images of the city.

What you'll find

13 Symbols of London

Today, we’ll take a look at the official and unofficial symbols of London that you’ll notice all across this ancient metropolis.

Official Symbols

1. coat of arms.

13 Symbols of London

The City of London is one of the many municipalities that make up Greater London. The city’s Coat of Arms consists of the shield carrying the arms, the crest on a helmet above the shield, supporters on both sides, and a motto on a scroll underneath the arms.

These are the blazons featured on the coat of arms:

• Argent, a cross gules, with a pale sword pointing upwards in the first quarter.

• A dragon’s wing argent that is charged with a cross throughout gules and sits on a wreath of the same colors as the coat of arms.

• To prop up the banner, there are two argent dragons, each with a cross throughout gules emblazoned on its underside.

• “Lord, direct (guide) us,” the city’s motto, is written in Latin: Domine dirige nos . Since it wasn’t in use before 1633, it probably gained popularity in the 17th century.

13 Symbols of London

Especially prominently perched atop the Temple bar, the Dragon is the City of London’s mascot and a symbol of its medieval gates. However, these terrifying beasts are located all across the city.

Leadenhall Market was designed by Horace Jones and built in the 19th century as a poultry market, and it features dragons in its ceiling.

At the pinnacle of St Mary’s Church in Le Bow, you may see one in mid-flight. The church, which had been rebuilt by Christopher Wren but destroyed in The Blitz, reopened in 1964, but its golden dragon had been in place since 1679.

3. Flag of the City of London

13 Symbols of London

The City of London flag takes its design elements from the English flag, which features a red St George’s Cross in the canton and a red sword on a white field at the center (the top left quarter). It is believed that Saint Paul, the patron saint of the city, was decapitated with this sword.

As the blade always points skyward, the flag’s sword should be printed such that it is on the left side when displayed in a banner fashion.

Only the historic City of London is represented by this flag; the rest of London is represented by a different flag. Unless otherwise stated, this article’s focus is solely on that city, and not the Greater London area.

Cultural Symbols

13 Symbols of London

An image often seen in London postcards, Big Ben is a nickname given to the Great Bell that is housed in the Great Clock of Westminster, which is located at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London.

The name is frequently extended to refer to both the clock itself as well as the clock tower. The official name of the tower in which Big Ben is housed was The Clock Tower. However, in 2012, in honor of Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, the tower’s name was changed to Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben is housed within this tower.

5. The Black Cab

13 Symbols of London

London is recognizable around the world for its iconic black taxis. They are all accessible to those using wheelchairs, and they have access to bus lanes that are reserved exclusively for them – along with motorcyclists, cyclists, and, of course, buses.

In addition to this, drivers of black taxis are required to pass a difficult exam known as “The Knowledge,” which assesses their familiarity with London’s major thoroughfares, side streets, and shortcuts.

6. Beefeaters

13 Symbols of London

Guarding the Tower of London, which is steeped in history and tradition, are some of the most recognizable figures in all of London. Their real name is “Yeoman Warders,” but they are commonly referred to as Beefeaters for reasons that aren’t entirely clear — possibly due to their love of meat!

Visit the Tower of London and have an actual Beefeater lead you on a tour to get the full London experience. You won’t want to miss out on this opportunity!

7. Buckingham Palace

13 Symbols of London

Buckingham Palace is not only a royal residence but also the administrative center of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom.

The palace, which can be found in Westminster, is frequently the focal point of both state occasions and royal hospitality.

Buckingham Palace is known all over the world as the place where the monarch resides. It is also the center of attention during national and royal celebrations, and it serves as the setting for the traditional “Changing of the Guard” ceremony.

8. Cup/Pot of Tea

In the year 1840, the Duchess of Bedford revealed her shameful habit of drinking tea and eating light snacks a few hours before supper, therefore establishing a pattern that would eventually become a widespread custom in the United Kingdom.

Today, taking afternoon tea in London is considered a tradition worthy of celebration, and the teacup (together with the teapot) has evolved into an iconic symbol of the city. They often appear on “I Love London” souvenir goods such as shirts, caps, sweaters, and tote bags.

9. London Bridge

13 Symbols of London

London Bridge is known throughout the world thanks to the song “London Bridge Is Falling Down.”

The contemporary version (and not about to fall) of the London Bridge is a brand-new, ultra-strong construction that reserves only half the area for walkers while providing four lanes for automobile traffic.

London Bridge is the city’s first and oldest river crossing, and it connects river traffic with road traffic. It was reconstructed numerous times; first out of lumber, then stone, then concrete, and finally steel.

Before the completion of Putney Bridge in 1729, the Thames could only be crossed at one point, and that point was London Bridge.

10. London Eye

13 Symbols of London

London Eye is Europe’s tallest big wheel. Its location on the banks of the Thames River allows it to rotate so slowly that we are not even aware that it is doing so. This is another recognizable London symbol seen on postcards and souvenirs and is probably among the first things you’ll notice as you approach the Thames River.

The London Eye may seem like a touristy thing to do when in London, but if you want unique views over the historic city, this is a must!

We have an article featuring the London Eye if you’re looking for the perfect Instagram post showcasing the best views of London . Check it out!

11. Double-decker Bus

The city’s bus system revolves primarily around these buses, one of the most iconic London symbols. They are up-to-date, modern, and environmentally friendly (there are hybrid and electric models), and there are a large number of them.

It seemed as though almost every single public bus in London was a double-decker, and there were very few regular ones. These buses are operated by several different companies, including Arriva .

If you want to explore London, spend an hour or so inside one of these and sit on the upper deck. You will be charged £1.5 for an hour of unlimited ride.

12. Red Telephone booth

13 Symbols of London

Probably the most well-known symbol of London is the iconic red phone booth. Unfortunately, these have become obsolete as smartphones have replaced the necessity for landlines. Despite this, thousands of red phone booths are still operating across London. Some booths had phones that worked, but the majority felt completely abandoned.

Still, these phone booths remain to be among the most photographed London fixtures. The iconic red telephone booth is also used as a time machine in the long-running series Dr. Who and is definitely a treat to fans visiting the city.

13. Tower Bridge

13 Symbols of London

You’ve most likely seen pictures of Tower Bridge, located about half a mile from the actual London Bridge. This famous bridge spans the Thames River, on postcards, stamps, and even bookmarks.

The two most popular crossings of the Thames River are Tower Bridge and London Bridge.

If you are visiting the area, you may even be lucky enough to be there one of the few times a day that the Tower Bridge opens to let larger ships pass through. That’s a memorable sight that you wouldn’t want to miss!

It marks a generational opportunity to write a new chapter in the City’s history.

What is the Destination City programme?

It sets out a vision for the Square Mile to become a world-leading leisure destination for UK and global visitors, workers, and residents to enjoy.

It was launched on 19 May 2022 by the Policy Chairman Chris Hayward. He outlined a package of measures designed to boost the vibrancy of the Square Mile, drive forward its recovery from the pandemic and increase its attractiveness to talent.

A dedicated visitor website was launched in June 2023.

Read the latest news releases for the Destination City programme .

Key features of the Destination City programme

  • A £2.5 million annual investment to boost the Square Mile’s leisure offer, building on recent cross-London campaigns and creating a leading City destination for workers, residents and UK and international visitors to enjoy.
  • Through partnerships with brands, City Business Improvement Districts, and landowners, Destination City will deliver an exciting all-year-round events programme.
  • Major events and new and exciting seasonal arts and culture activity will enliven the City’s streets and venues, encouraging audiences to experience this part of London in a new way.
  • We are delivering a new visitor and tourist brand for the City of London, boosting the Square Mile’s position as a global leisure destination. This is providing a powerful new voice for the Square Mile’s businesses and cultural attractions, and new tourism, travel, media, and commercial partnerships are helping promote the City to London, UK, and global audiences. This includes a major new City of London destination brand and website.
  • We are making radical changes to the Square Mile’s streets to support Destination City, with wider pavements, al-fresco dining, and first-class infrastructure for our pedestrians and cyclists.
  • City roof gardens, terraces, and viewing galleries are already a magnet for visitors with the Sky Garden, on top of 20 Fenchurch Street, welcoming over 10 million visitors. And we are using our planning powers to create new inclusive public spaces and cultural experiences.
  • Destination City builds on a long track record of culture investment in the Square Mile. The City Corporation is already the fourth largest funder of heritage and cultural activities in the UK and invests over £130m every year.
  • We are working with all our attractions, from the Barbican Centre and Guildhall Art Gallery to Tower Bridge and The Monument, to draw in UK and international visitors, workers, and residents.

1 in 24 New York City residents is a millionaire, more than any other city

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: May 8, 2024 / 11:30 PM EDT / CBS News

New York has more millionaires than any other city in the world, beating out California's Bay Area, London and other wealthy cities, according to a new report.

Nearly 350,00, or one in every 24 residents of The Big Apple are millionaires, according to a new ranking from Henley and Partners. New York City is also home to 744 centi-millionaires, worth at least $100 million; and 60 billionaires. The combined total wealth of the city's residents is greater than $3 trillion.

New York tops the list of richest cities despite some of its wealthiest residents fleeing for Miami, now dubbed Wall Street South, as finance firms set up shop in the Sunshine State. Billionaire hedge fund Ken Griffin recently moved Citadel's headquarters from Chicago to Miami. Miami was ranked 33rd on the list, with 35,300 millionaires, up 78% from 2013.

After New York City, California's Bay Area has the second-highest share of millionaires — 305,700. Tokyo, Japan, took the third spot, followed by Singapore.

London, Paris, Dubai

London's share of millionaires dropped 10% from 2013, according to the report, landing it in fifth place. Seventh-ranked Paris is the wealthiest city in mainland Europe. Dubai is far and away the wealthiest city in the Middle East, having grown its population of millionaires by 78% over the past 10 years.

Henley and Partners, a firm that provides residence and citizenship services, defined millionaires as individuals with liquid investable wealth of at least $1 million.

Some countries have had their wealth boosted by so-called golden visa programs that let wealthy foreigners obtain citizenship and/or residence. Seven of the wealthiest cities in the world are in countries that host these types of programs.

"You can secure the right to live, work, study and invest in leading international wealth hubs such as New York, Singapore, Sydney, Vienna and Dubai via investment," said Dominic Volek, head of private clients at Henley & Partners. "Being able to relocate yourself, your family, or your business to a more favorable city or have the option to choose between multiple different cities across the world is an increasingly important aspect of international wealth and legacy planning for private clients."

The programs benefit cities and countries, which can use them "to attract the world's wealthiest and most talented to their shores," said Volek.

For locals, however, the influx of foreign money can lead to their being priced out of a housing market , and even displace them from the very cities in which they were born.

Images of a Brazilian City Underwater

Torrential rains have caused one of Brazil’s worst floods in modern history, leaving more than 100 dead and nearly an entire state submerged.

  • May 8, 2024

Anderson da Silva Pantaleão was at the snack bar he owns last Friday when clay-colored water began filling the streets in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre. Soon, it was rushing into his ground-floor shop. By 9 p.m., the water was up to his waist.

“Then the fear starts to hit,” he said. “You’re just trying not to drown.”

He dashed up to a neighbor’s home on the second floor, taking refuge for the next three nights, rationing water, cheese and sausage with two others. Members of the group slept in shifts, fearing another rush of water could take them by surprise in the dead of night.

On Monday, water began flooding the second floor, and they thought the worst. Then, a military boat arrived and rescued Mr. Pantaleão, 43. A day later, despite heavy rains, he was trying to go back on a rescue boat to search for friends who were still missing or stranded.

“I can’t leave them there,” he said. “The water is running out, the food is running out.”

Flood victims took shelter at a sports facility in the Menino Deus neighborhood of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The situation in southern Brazil, where heavy rains have caused flooding in hundreds of municipalities, may worsen with the arrival of new storms.

A man was rescued by military firefighters after the floods in Canoas, Brazil, on Saturday.

Brazil is grappling with one of its worst floods in recent history. Torrential rains have drenched the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, home to 11 million people, since late April and have triggered severe flooding that has submerged entire towns, blocked roads, broken a major dam and shut down the international airport until June.

At least 105 people have been killed and 130 others have been reported missing. The floods, which have stretched across most of Rio Grande do Sul’s 497 municipalities, have forced nearly 164,000 people from their homes.

In the state capital, Porto Alegre, a city of 1.3 million perched on the banks of the Guaiba River, streets were submerged in murky water and the airport was shuttered by the deluge, with flights canceled through the end of the month.

The river rose to over 16 feet this week, exceeding the previous high levels seen during a major flood in 1941 that paralyzed the city for weeks.

The flooding has blocked roads into the city and hampered deliveries of basic goods. Supermarkets were running out of bottled water on Tuesday, and some residents reported walking up to three miles in search of clean drinking water.

Many of those stranded awaited help on rooftops. Some took desperate measures to flee: When the shelter her family was staying in flooded, Ana Paula de Abreu, 40, swam to a rescue boat while grasping her 11-year-old son under one arm. Two residents of one Porto Alegre neighborhood used an inflatable mattress to pull at least 15 people out of their inundated homes.

Search crews, which include the authorities and volunteers, were scouring flooded areas and rescuing residents by boat and air. With nowhere to land, some helicopters have used winches to pull up people stranded by the flooding.

Barbara Fernandes, 42, a lawyer in Porto Alegre, spent hours on the scorching roof of her apartment building on Monday, waving a red rag and her crutches toward the sky. A rescue helicopter finally spotted her in the late afternoon.

“You just don’t know when they’ll come for you,” said Ms. Fernandes, who is recovering from surgery on her ankle and could not flee her building before the waters rose.

Residents were evacuated in a military vehicle from an area flooded by heavy rains, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on Tuesday.

Cintia Santos was evacuated by bus from a flooded area on Tuesday in Eldorado do Sul.

Nearly 67,000 people were living in shelters across the state, while others have taken refuge in the homes of family or friends. Some people who had access to neither option were sleeping in their cars or on the streets in areas that were still dry.

“It seems like we’re living through the end of the world,” said Beatriz Belmontt Abel, 46, a nursing technician who was volunteering at a shelter in the city of Canoas, across the river from Porto Alegre. “I never imagined I would see this happen.”

In another shelter set up in a gym in Porto Alegre, volunteers distributed meals and clothes. Rows of mattresses lay on the floor, and cardboard boxes served as shelves. Those who had been rescued busied themselves sweeping the floor and making their temporary beds.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who visited the region last week, pledged federal funds to help the rescue efforts. The state authorities have also announced aid to pay for search crews, health services and housing for those whose homes were destroyed or damaged by floodwaters.

Even as rescues continued, the authorities worried that the crisis could worsen because another wave of severe weather was expected in coming days. With a cold front buffeting the region, meteorologists have forecast heavy rains, hail, thunderstorms and winds over 60 miles per hour.

The states’s governor, Eduardo Leite, said the authorities were evacuating people from regions vulnerable to more turbulent weather. Some residents have refused to abandon their homes, fearing looting. Others have tried to return to their neighborhoods, hoping water levels will recede.

“It’s not time to go home,” Mr. Leite told reporters on Tuesday.

The flooding is the fourth weather-related crisis to hit Brazil’s southern region in less than a year. In September, 37 people were killed in Rio Grande do Sul by torrential rains and punishing winds caused by a cyclone.

Climate experts say the region is reeling from the effects of El Niño, the cyclical climate phenomenon that can bring heavy rains to Brazil’s southern regions while causing drought in the Amazon rainforest.

But the effects of El Niño have been exacerbated by a mix of climate change, deforestation and haphazard urbanization, according to Mercedes Bustamante, an ecologist and professor at the University of Brasília.

“You’re really looking at a recipe for disaster,” said Dr. Bustamante, who has written several reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a body of experts convened by the United Nations.

For well over a decade, scientists have been warning policymakers that global warming would bring increased rains to this region.

As deforestation advances in the Amazon and elsewhere in Brazil, precipitation patterns are shifting and leading to more erratic rain patterns, according to Dr. Bustamante. As a result, rainfall is spread unevenly at times, drenching smaller areas or coming in torrential downpours over shorter periods.

Severe weather has also become more deadly in recent decades, as urban populations have grown and cities like Porto Alegre have pushed into forested areas that once acted as buffers against flooding and landslides, she added.

The latest floods caught Brazil “unprepared,” Dr. Bustamante noted, highlighting the need to make cities more resilient to climate change and develop response strategies that better protect residents from extreme weather events, which are bound to become more frequent.

“It is a tragedy that, unfortunately, has been coming for some time,” she said. “We hope that this serves as a call to action.”

Jaguars stadium renovation deal will be announced Tuesday, City Council president says

The Jaguars and Mayor Donna Deegan have reached a deal for renovations of the stadium , City Council President Ron Salem announced Wednesday.

"The mayor reached out to me late yesterday afternoon to inform me that the executive branch and the Jaguars have reached an agreement on the stadium renovation," Salem said at the beginning of a joint meeting with the Duval County School Board Wednesday morning.

The mayor’s office and consultants have led the city’s negotiations since August and will present the proposed agreement to council at the next regular meeting on Tuesday.

“We have reached an agreement on the framework of a deal," Deegan said in a statement Wednesday. "The negotiating team is currently putting the final details on paper, and we will release that information as soon as it is available.”

Gene Frenette: Jaguars, city appear on a good track to close out deal on renovated NFL stadium

Salem did not comment on what share the city could carry of the potential $1.4 billion renovation.

"I do not know the specifics of this particular deal but look forward to engaging the council during the month of June as we move forward to review it," Salem said.

City Council will have to approve the deal over the next few months. The Jaguars, according to previous Times-Union reporting , hope to have a deal finalized by early summer in order to take it to the NFL owners meeting in October.

The city will host a series of public meetings to discuss the deal, much like the Jaguars “huddles” last year.

Deals in other cities: Stadium deals in Buffalo and Nashville show how Jacksonville agreement could be shaped

The current lease for the Jaguars to use city-owned EverBank Stadium goes through the 2029 season. A major piece of the stadium renovation involves negotiations for a new 30-year lease.

The talks also have involved whether the Jaguars would play home games away from Jacksonville during the 2026 and 2027 seasons or just the 2027 season because of the extensive construction.

Deegan has said a key area for her is what the “community benefit” portion of the agreement would be for the Jaguars to support neighborhood improvement programs, such as in the Eastside neighborhood that is located near the sports complex.

Their royal tour is off to a flying start!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were secretly reunited at London’s Heathrow Airport before boarding a flight to Nigeria together on Thursday.

The Duchess of Sussex, 42, was slammed this week for her “odd” decision to skip her husband’s UK trip this week as he headed to his home soil to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Harry, 39, touched down in the capital on Tuesday — but his stay was brief as he was already en route to the airport just two days later.

The “Suits” alum landed at Heathrow Thursday evening after flying solo from Los Angeles.

She met up with her husband at the airport’s VIP Windsor Suite before the pair boarded a commercial British Airways flight to Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, the Daily Mail reports .

The duo, who quit royal life in 2020, were invited to Nigeria by the West African country’s chief of defense staff — its highest-ranking military official.

The pair’s flight experienced a slight delay due to the pilot falling ill, according to the outlet. The duo were sat in first class of the Boeing 777.

The Sussexes landed in Nigeria Friday morning, and were reportedly first to be escorted off the aircraft.

The pair were greeted by Nigerian officials at the Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and were escorted into a waiting minibus upon arrival.

They were accompanied by the security team that looked after Harry during his London trip this week .

Harry and Meghan are already back in action in Nigeria, as the pair have their first official engagement with General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defense Staff.

The couple, who were each gifted a traditional wooden beaded necklace, visited children at the Lights Academy in Abuja, where they were greeted by cheering crowds.

The former actress was dressed in a peach-hued maxi dress and accessorized with gold jewelry.

Harry, for his part, rocked a light-wash linen shirt and a similar-colored pair of khaki pants. He topped off his casual look with a pair of tan shoes.

In the afternoon, Harry will meet injured service members at a military hospital.

The exiled royal launched the  Invictus Games in 2014  as a multisport Paralympic-styled games for wounded or injured servicemen and veterans.

On Saturday, the duo will attend a training session for the organization “Nigeria: Unconquered” as well as a reception hosted by the Chief of Defense Staff in honor of military families.

Later that day, the mom of two will co-host an event of Women in Leadership with Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization.

On Sunday, the Sussexes will enjoy a bit of sport at a basketball clinic with Giants of Africa, followed by a reception and a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.
