Vocabulary • Digit- A symbol used to make numerals. • 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are the ten digits we use in everyday numbers. • Example: the numeral 153 is made up of 3 digits ("1", "5" and "3").

Vocabulary • Place Value: Where the digit sits in the number, such as units, tens, hundreds, etc. • Example: in 352, the place value of the 5 is "tens"

Peace Summit being held in Peebles during solar eclipse

PEEBLES --The Serpent Mound Star Knowledge New Moon, Solar Eclipse Spring Peace Summit offers four days of ceremony with indigenous elders, musical experiences through song and drumming, workshops, presentations and other spiritually transformative opportunities.

It takes place from Friday evening, April 5 to Monday, April 8. The hours are from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday through Monday and evening only on Friay, April 5 at Woodland Altars, 33200 State Route 41, Peebles.

The event runs through April 8 when the solar eclipse occurs. The alignment of the sun, moon and earth represents the dissolving of differences and the coming together as one, according to a news release from the group.

Internationally known speakers, elders, peace activists and wisdom keepers will share their knowledge, inspire change and offer many opportunities to experience life through new eyes, seen from all perspectives while bringing greater understanding, compassion, peace and love for all. Hear Jennifer Black Elk (descendant of Chief Red Cloud and Nicholas Black Elk, Nikki Zephier (Standing Elk Good Woman) and daughter of deceased Chief Golden Light Eagle, Barbara Viitale (Grandmother Blue Star Woman), Taino elder Miguel Sague Jr., star knowledge discussions and more.

Over 40 presentations will be included during the peace summit.

Vendors and artists who offer one-of-a-kind jewelry, drums, flutes, medicine bags, healing tools, and crystals will be at the event.

Tickets are $44 for a single day or $88 for the full peace summit and children are admitted for free. Ticketsmay be purchased at the gate or in advance at www.eventbrite.com/e/serpent-mound-star-knowledge-new-moon-solar eclipse-spring-peace-summit-tickets-749579611797 .

Cash is best during the gathering due to WiFi issues. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own eclipse glasses.

Several workshops have a suggested love offering of $25 each, but otherwise the admission includes all other programs. A food vendor will be on-site with vegan and omnivore choices throughout the event.

The Woodland Altars Appalachian location is a scenic retreat which is just a few short miles from the Serpent Mound. The Serpent Mound is on an ancient sea bed centered in a 320 million-year-old meteor impact crater. It is the only place on earth where a meteor has hit a fault line and is filled with ancient connections and beautiful history. It is the largest surviving example of a prehistoric effigy mound in the world.

The horror of the Key Bridge disappearing overnight

The bridge symbolized technological prowess and human connection. its collapse triggers darker emotions..

The video of the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s collapse now exists as a global icon, giving several billion people a seemingly intimate and shocking memory of a bridge they may never have seen or heard of until social media and journalism made it ubiquitous.

The video is fascinating, terrifying, mesmerizing, and it may confirm superstitions we often feel about things beyond our individual comprehension. How is it that airplanes stay up in the air, and tunnels don’t collapse under the weight of water and earth? Even the most agnostic brains will make quiet and reflexive supplication for protection before crossing a bridge as dramatic as the one that collapsed this week.

The loss of the bridge is first a human tragedy, for those injured or killed by its collapse. And then it is an economic shock, with a radiating toll that won’t be fully understood for years , and perhaps decades. But it’s also a powerful symbolic shock, given the metaphorical power of bridges as a form of connection, a symbol of our technical prowess, a point of civic pride and persistent desire to master and reshape the landscape.

On the day the Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977, the Baltimore Sun celebrated the views from the top of its giant steel-truss crossing: “In every direction from the harbor span lie dramatic vistas of the Port of Baltimore.” That included a marine terminal, the giant Bethlehem Steel plant and the Penn Central Canton rail yards. After delays and cost overruns, the new bridge was welcomed as yet more proof of the city’s ambition, its engineering prowess and its economic might.

The city hasn’t fared well in recent decades, and the newspaper’s breathless boosterism for new infrastructure sounds strangely dated. So, too, the name the bridge bears. We remember Francis Scott Key not only as the author of our national anthem’s lyrics, but also as an enslaver and staunch opponent of abolitionism. There is little enthusiasm for creating new memorials to him.

The Style section

But the Key Bridge was a marvel, and it remained a high point of any drive around the city of Baltimore until its collapse, early Tuesday morning, after being struck by a giant container ship. Since the middle of the last century, American infrastructure has been laid heavily and bluntly on the social and natural landscape. Interstate highways were plowed recklessly and cruelly through urban areas, too often dividing and polluting neighborhoods of the poor and people of color. Outside of cities, the standardized width, grades and slopes of the interstate highways seem designed to deny any connection to topography.

The Key Bridge, however, was a rare moment when your car seemed to soar, giving you a not-quite-bird’s-eye view of the peculiar geography and history of the East Coast. Any trip by train or highway along the heavily populated Mid-Atlantic seaboard involves myriad long bridges and tunnels to cross the bays, estuaries and wide rivers that stretch deep into the coastal plains. Baltimore is situated where it is because it provides safe harbor for ships. And many seemingly landlocked cities, like Richmond and Fredericksburg, lie near the last navigable point of major rivers that stretch fingers of trade and commerce into the country’s interior. Unlike the tunnels that carry Interstate 95 and I-895 across the harbor and Patapsco River, the Key Bridge offered an exhilarating experience of the landscape, and its connection to the early economy of colonial America.

A symbolic shock like Tuesday’s tends to lead the public toward darker emotions — horror, of course — but also fear, suspicion and even cynicism.

Like the photographs that emerge from wars or disaster, bombings, floods and earthquakes, the video of the bridge collapse doesn’t explain the things that feel most inexplicable. The more you watch it, the less it yields, until finally the mind flirts with some kind of metaphor or parable to make sense of it. Perhaps there is a fable of American decline or corruption or incompetence. It’s best not to amplify or extend the toxic theories that circulated in the immediate aftermath. But they are symptoms of the same phenomenon, a sudden, overwhelming craving for meaning, into which unscrupulous people will project their ugliest fancy.

In the video, the bridge faltered first on the left side of the frame, then in the center, and then its long truss snapped and the right span fell, all in a matter of a few seconds. The speed of its failure offers the first of the fables, that something must be desperately wrong with the design for it to collapse so quickly. But its rapid failure is directly related to the properties of a long, steel-truss bridge. Put simply: Each part of this bridge’s main span is helping the other parts do their work. Its elements are integrated into a whole, which allows less steel to bear more weight.

The engineering is fundamental to the bridge’s beauty. The main span of the Key Bridge, the one that flew high above the river allowing passage to ships beneath, sat on its four piers like a bird. Seen from a distance, it looked spidery and delicate. For centuries, advances in bridge technology have created a tension between efficiency — the ability to span greater distances with less structure — and an intuitive belief that bridges should be solid, heavy, formidable in their construction. When 18th-century London debated the design of a new Blackfriars bridge, Samuel Johnson argued vehemently for a heavier structure of semicircular arches, rather than what was built, a series of slightly more graceful semielliptical arches.

“The first excellence of a bridge built for commerce, over a large river, is strength,” he wrote in a 1759 public letter. He lost the argument, but his appeal to what seemed common sense — the old, round Roman arch was stronger and thus always preferable — still haunts our thinking about infrastructure, if we think of each project individually and unrelated to larger needs and systems.

But infrastructure isn’t just a collection of individual projects, but a larger collection of problems and responses. And to meet those demands efficiently, you build not the strongest bridge possible in every case, but the strongest necessary to meet a reasonable set of expectations and risks.

The giant steel bridges the world began building in the 19th century embody the man-made sublime, delighting the eye and terrifying the mind with their ambition. Walt Whitman used to visit the great Eads Bridge in St. Louis to feast on the poetry of its design: “I have haunted the river every night lately, where I could look at the bridge by moonlight.” It was, he said, “a structure of perfection and beauty unsurpassable,” a sentiment more common when this technology was still new, and dazzling, and wasn’t routinely value-engineered out of the final design.

But when Benjamin Baker and John Fowler designed the equally beautiful Forth Bridge in Scotland, they had to demonstrate the engineering in a way that made its forces of tension and cantilevers intelligible to ordinary people. So, they had a picture taken of three men using chairs, broomsticks, weights and their arms to reproduce the logic of his design. In the middle, miraculously suspended in midair, sat Kaichi Watanabe, a Japanese engineer who was studying in the United Kingdom.

The image not only explained the bridge, but also made it human, extending its metaphorical power as a collective human project with collective benefits. It enacted in an almost comical way the basic trust we place in engineering that defies our individual comprehension.

There will be investigations and essential lessons learned from the tragedy earlier this week. People trying to bypass Baltimore will be inconvenienced, and people who live there will be unnecessarily burdened , but there will also be workarounds and adaptation. And slowly, the images, fables and analogies that govern our thinking about bridges will revert to where they have been for centuries: They are a means of connection, essential, often beautiful, sometimes terrifying, and never more so than when they are miraculous in their efficiency of design.

My family of 4 ate at Olive Garden for the first time, and our $150 meal felt like an excellent value

• My family of four ate at Italian-American chain restaurant Olive Garden for the first time.
• Our $150 meal included an appetizer, entreés, desserts, soup, salad, breadsticks, and wine.
• Based on the giant portion sizes and quality of the pasta dishes, I'd return to Olive Garden again.

Since my family started visiting chain restaurants for the first time about a year ago, we've dined everywhere, from Ruth's Chris Steak House to Bahama Breeze .

I've never seen customers lined up just to get a table at any of them until we visited Olive Garden on a Friday night.

But I guess I shouldn't have been surprised — Americans are spending more of their income on going out to eat than ever before , and diners are searching for value.

And, after a great meal, my husband, our two teens, and I found it at Olive Garden.

Olive Garden is known for its classic Italian-inspired fare.

The first Olive Garden opened in Orlando in 1982, and the chain became famous for its Italian-American fare and "never-ending" breadsticks and soup or salad.

Now, it has about 900 locations in the US and countries like Mexico and Canada.

We started our meal with a $20 bottle of wine.

Olive Garden offers a selection of Italian wines for just $20 per bottle, so my husband and I opted for a red blend.

We also could've chosen white, pink, or red Moscato, but we're not big sweet wine drinkers.

The wine was delicious and, at just $20 for the whole bottle, felt like a true value. Our kids ordered a soda and a peach-raspberry iced tea, which were $4 each.

We shared a $9 appetizer to start.

The menu mostly consisted of classic pasta dishes and more creative ones, plus also soups, chicken dishes, and appetizers like calamari and toasted ravioli .

We started off our meal with Olive Garden's fried mozzarella ($9) and really enjoyed it. We got seven fried mozzarella sticks and a side of marinara dipping sauce.

My son, the least adventurous eater out of the four of us, had never tried mozzarella sticks before. After trying these, he was a convert.

Our entreés came with soup, salad, and breadsticks.

Each entreé at Olive Garden comes with breadsticks and a choice of either soup or salad. All three are "never-ending," so if we ran out, we were welcome to ask for more.

My husband and I chose Olive Garden's iconic house salad — simple ingredients like lettuce, onions, pepperoncini, and tomatoes dressed with delicious Italian dressing.

My daughter tried the zuppa toscana soup, and it was so tasty we could all see why there are so many copycat recipes for it online.

My son stuck with just the breadsticks, which were also really good. I was impressed by how much extra food accompanies each entreé at this chain restaurant.

The chicken Alfredo was better than any version I've attempted to make at home.

Chicken Alfredo is one of my favorite things to order at an Italian restaurant, as I've yet to find an Alfredo sauce recipe or store-bought Alfredo that I like enough to enjoy at home.

So, I ordered a $20 plate of chicken Alfredo pasta and was not disappointed.

The portion size was huge, and the chicken was perfectly cooked. I immediately knew I'd be eating leftovers of this for days, and I wasn't mad about it.

My daughter's slice of lasagna was large and tasty.

My daughter's $19 Lasagna Classico was a pretty straightforward lasagna dish.

Olive Garden's meat sauce is a blend of beef and Italian sausage, and it gave the meal the perfect savory flavor. The multiple layers of cheeses like pecorino Romano, mozzarella, and Parmesan made this the ultimate comfort food.

With no burgers on the menu, my son was forced to be more adventurous.

My son's standard order at most restaurants is a plain cheeseburger, so I was amused watching him figure out what to get from a menu of Italian-style dishes .

He picked traditional spaghetti and meatballs ($17) and seemed to really enjoy it.

My husband was impressed by his pasta dish with shrimp.

My husband, who enjoys seafood, chose the chicken and shrimp carbonara ($22).

The dish had pasta, shrimp, chicken, and peppers tossed in a creamy sauce. He enjoyed it a great deal and said the shrimp was cooked perfectly.

The four of us shared two desserts.

For dessert, we tried a slice of strawberry cream cake ($10) — vanilla sponge layered with vanilla cream and topped with strawberries — and warm Italian donuts ($9).

The fried donuts were my favorite, mostly because they were served with both raspberry and chocolate dipping sauces, which made them even more delicious.

The only place Olive Garden failed me was with the limoncello.

After spending time in Italy this summer , I've become a big fan of limoncello and consider it synonymous with a delicious Italian meal.

So, after dessert, I asked our server for a glass of it.

The $8 pour came out warm and wasn't the most flavorful limoncello I've had, which I found surprising considering how good the red wine we'd had earlier in the evening tasted.

Based on our experience, we'd return to Olive Garden.

For $150, my family feasted on fried mozzarella, soup and salad, breadsticks, four entreés, two desserts, a bottle of wine, a glass of limoncello, and two kid-appropriate drinks.

The meal was surprisingly delicious and felt well worth the price, especially considering the soup, salad, and breadsticks were included with our entrées.

The portion sizes at Olive Garden were also impressive. We had leftover pasta to eat for several days, something none of us were complaining about.

Next time I visit, however, I'll skip the limoncello. And I'll join the waitlist in advance to make sure we get a table.
