The Power of Books: How Reading Awakens the Inner Spirit Essay

Introduction, i opened a book by julia donaldson, something just like this by the chainsmokers & coldplay, how books can open your mind by lisa bu, works cited.

In an excerpt from Letters to Friends, Family and Editors , Franz Kafka explains why people read books. He says people read books that wound, stab, and hurt them. Readers find no fun reading books that would make them happy (Popova). Instead, they pick books that affect them like a disaster and make them feel like they lost a loved one or have been banished from their village. Readers want a book that awakens the unexploited energy frozen inside them (Popova). In other words, people read books for awakening, motivation, and to be challenged. In this analysis, three different sources, a poem, a song, and a TEDx Talk speech, are incorporated to elaborate more on the importance of reading books. Reading books is vital because they awaken the reader’s inner spirit, which requires constant motivation to prosper.

I opened a book is a poem in which Julia Donaldson narrates her experience reading a book. She confesses that after she opened and started reading the unnamed book, she realized she was in a new world. She went to a place where no one could find her. Donaldson says, “I’ve left my chair, my house, my road, my town and my world behind me (3-4). She shows how she immensely dives into the experience of reading. Her spirit is in the world of this book, and she feels like her body has left her home too. Such an experience is a psychological event from which book readers benefit. Reading a book helps the poet move to another world while in her room.

The poet narrates that as she reads, she is wearing a different clock in which she gains new and strange experiences. That the book gives her magical powers to do the impossible. “I’ve swallowed the magic potion. I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king and dived in a bottomless ocean (Ronaldson 7-9). While within the process of reading the book, the writer can do the impossible. Like Kafka mentioned, Donaldson is reading a book that affects her like a disaster. She reads about having magical powers where she fights with dragons and dines with a king. The poet adds that she had a chance to share experiences with the book’s characters by making them her friends. However, when she stops reading the book, she realizes she is still sitting in her chair in her home. Therefore, according to the poet, reading books is essential because it allows readers to be imaginative and consume new experiences.

Something just like this is a song about an experience reading a book. In the lyrics, the two singers say that they have been reading books of old legends and myths such as Achilles and his gold, Hercules and his gifts, Spiderman’s control, and Batman with his fists (“Something Just Like This”). However, they realize they do not fit such people’s lists. An inspiring female asks them whether they want to take risks because she is not interested in superhumans but in the ungifted selves. Chainsmokers and Coldplay narrate their occurrences in reading books about gifted superhumans. Confirming Kafka’s words that readers want books that destroy them, the singers are hurt by the feeling of being powerless compared to the heroes. They are frustrated by knowing they are nothing like the books’ characters.

As they continue reading, the artists find encouraging voices assuring them of their powers. The occurrences of reading the book allow them to be like the gifted characters. Courageously, the artist says, “I want something just like this (“Something Just Like This”). The two are motivated to be someone beyond who they are in person. In the real world, this is a form of awakening where individuals are pushed to be better than they are. Chainsmokers and Coldplay are ready to accept an offer from the gifter willing to make them superhumans. Individuals move their talents beyond their limits by reading such hurting books.

In a TEDx Talk, Lisa Bu, a Chinese living in America, tells how reading books changed her life. When Bu was in the first grade, the Chinese government wanted to send her to an athletic school, but her mother refused (“How books can open your mind”). Her parents wanted her to become an engineer, just like them. However, Bu had a separate dream to become an opera singer. Therefore, staggering between her parent’s wishes and hers, she developed a habit of reading books. She started reading books about family functionality and being an independent woman. She then realized that being an independent woman but such a role differed from Confucian, which requires obedience (“How books can open your mind”). Therefore, feeling challenged by the demands of an independent role in a Chinese setting dictated by the books, she decided to read expansively. Agreeing with Kafka’s assertion, Bu was challenged by these books to become someone else. The texts revealed that she could become whomever she wished without disrespecting her parents.

When Bu came to the US in 1995, she started reading books banned in China. She read many books, including The Good Earth and the Holy Bible , King James Version (“How books can open your mind”). Upon reading the bible, she learned about the fifth commandment, which says children should honor their parents. Bu felt that honoring was different from obeying, as demanded in Confucian. She used the acquired knowledge as a tool to climb up the Confucian guilt trap and follow her dreams. The speaker decided to be independent while still honoring her parents (“How books can open your mind”). Furthermore, she compared books to weigh authors’ opinions and increase her insights. Bu’s story makes it apparent that she found awakening through reading books. Bu read books that compromised her faith and belief, confirming Kafka’s assertions. These books proved her wrong for wanting to become an independent woman in a land where she should be humble and obedient. Feeling challenged, she read books that gave her alternative insight into her belief. Therefore, from Bu’s experience, reading books is critical for insights into different ideas.

Book readers are interested in reading books that challenge them to be awakened. Reading books that leave people happy is no benefit. Ronaldson showed how reading books drives her to a new world and to find life-changing experiences. Chainsmokers and Coldplay say they are motivated to improve their worlds by reading challenging texts. But by reading books that challenge her culture found insights to lean on as she pursues happiness. The selection of these readers’ books confirms that reading books is essential to awaken the inner soul.

Unleash Your Greatest Potential

The Power of Books

image

“A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.” –Neil Gaiman

Books change lives.

I learned how to read with Dr. Seuss books.  Oh, the Places You’ll Go taught me to dream big.

I also learned with a collection of Little Golden Books .  One of my favorite stories was The Little Engine that Could.  It taught me to believe in myself and to keep trying, especially when things get tough.

Books have given me access to the world’s best wisdom, and have stretched my mind past any conceivable horizon.  They are the ultimate form of self-education, and the ultimate tool for personal empowerment.

Tony Robbins is also a big believer in the power of books.  In the book, MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom , he reminds us of the power of books as readers to change our lives, and as authors to change the world.

Books Help Us Find the Answers

Books help us find the answers, wherever we are, whoever we are.  They are always there for us.

Via MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom :

“The financial crisis caused tremendous pain, but it also made us reevaluate what’s most important in our lives–things that have nothing to do with money.  It was time to get back to basics, to the values that have sustained us through troubled times before.  For me, it made me remember the days when I was sleeping in my car homeless and searching for a way to change my life.  How did I do it? Books?  They helped to establish me.  I’ve always been a voracious reader: as a young man, I decided I was going to read a book a day.  I figured leaders are readers.  I took a speed-reading course.  I didn’t quite read a book a day, but over seven years, I did read more than 700 books to find the answers to help myself and others.  Books on psychology, time management, history, philosophy, physiology.  I wanted to know about anything that could immediately change the quality of my life and anyone else’s.”

Books Can Teach Us Limitless Possibility

So many people have dreamed bigger because of the books they have read.

“But the books I read as a child made the deepest impression.  They were my ticket out of a world of pain: a world with no compelling future.  They transported me to a realm of limitless possibilities.  I can remember Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay on self-reliance, and the lines ‘There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion.’  Another was a book by the philosopher James Allen, As a Man Thinketh, echoing the biblical proverb ‘As a man thinketh, so his heart will be.’ It came to me at a time when my mind was a battlefield filled with fear.  He taught me that everything we create in our lives starts with thought.”

Books Give Us Access to Great Leaders, Great Thinkers, and Great Doers

Books help us learn how great people have done great things, and how we too, can unleash what we’re capable of.

“I devoured biographies of great leaders, great thinkers, great doers, like Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Carnegie, John F. Kennedy, and Viktor Frankl.  I realized that the great men and women of the world had experienced pain and suffering much greater than my own.  They weren’t just lucky or even fortunate; somehow there was something in them, an invisible force that would not let them settle for less than they could do, or be, or give.  I realized that biography is not destiny; that my past was not equal to my future.

Another favorite was an American classic from 1937, Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich.  Hill spent two decades in the early 20th century interviewing 500 of the world’s most accomplished individuals, from Andrew Carnegie, to Henry Ford, to Theodore Roosevelt, to Thomas Edison, finding out what them them tick.  He discovered that they all shared a relentless focus on their goals, and a combination of burning desire, faith, and persistence to achieve them.  Hill’s message that ordinary people could overcome any obstacle to success gave hope to a generation of reader’s struggling through the Great Depression.  Think and Grow Rich became one of the best-selling books of all time.”

Books Help Us Build a Better Future

Authors that share their gifts or the gifts of others, help people improve the quality of their life, and build a new and better future.

“Napoleon Hill’s quest has become an inspiration to me.  Like his classic, this book is modeled on seeking out the best of the best in the world, from Warren Buffet to Sir Richard Branson–and including the man that experts in the field have called the Edison of our day: Ray Kurzweil, who invented the first digital music synthesizers, the first software to translate text into speech; he’s the man behind Siri on your iPhone.  He developed a device that allows the blind to walk the streets and read road signs and order from any menu.  Today Ray is head of engineering development for Google.  But I wanted to write a book that went beyond the psychology and science of achievement to come up with a  real plan, with real tools that you could use to build a better future for yourself and your family.  It would be a handbook, a blueprint, an owner’s manual for the new economy.”

If you want more out of life, somewhere there is a book on a shelf that will be your friend and guide.

If you’re an author, write with might, and birth your book that will light the way for others.

The power of books is in our hands.

Books give people power

Books transform how people see themselves and the world around them. But millions of people live without books. We’re here to change that.

We see the power of books every day.

It’s a new library opening in a school that’s never had one. It’s a midwife using the latest medical textbook to save a baby’s life. It’s a family escaping into a story after being forced to flee their home.

It’s a path to a more equal future.

A single book can transform dozens of lives – offering joy, inspiration and hope. It can be taken anywhere, without Wi-Fi or a charger. Wherever you are in the world, a book can fire you up to work for a better tomorrow.

Books give people power – so we work every day to create a world where everyone has access to books.

How do books help people create a more equal future?

A book might seem like a small thing in the battle against inequality. But we see every day how books can spark a transformation.

Books help learning thrive

Learning changes forever when classrooms and school libraries are fully stocked with brand new books. Teachers can elevate their lessons. Learning to read becomes much easier. And a very different future feels more achievable.

Books create opportunities

When books are within reach, a world of possibilities opens up. Books unlock new ideas. They help people think in new ways. They reveal new careers and opportunities – and provide the knowledge people need to seize them.

Books restore hope

In the midst of a conflict or the aftermath of a disaster, books provide an invaluable sense of normality. They can help people escape into a story and feel a glimmer of hope – instead of feeling overwhelmed by trauma.

  • How we reach refugees
  • How we respond when books are lost

Books inspire confidence

There’s no limit to what you can find in the pages of a book. Self-belief. New ideas. A sense of connection. Books can help people feel more confident and believe their ambitions truly are achievable.

  • How we promote reading in communities

This is the power of books

Books give people the power to build a more equal future. Here are three readers who have done just that.

Why we read: authors and readers on the power of literature

As World Book Day is celebrated around the world – and World Book Night in the UK – we look at great quotes from authors on why they like reading, as well as some from our own readers

When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young.

Maya Angelou

There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.

Marcel Proust

Haruki Murakami, novelist

If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.
  • Haruki Murakami
The books I loved in childhood - the first loves - I’ve read so often that I’ve internalized them in some really essential way: they are more inside me now than out.

Donna Tartt

I believe that reading and writing are the most nourishing forms of meditation anyone has so far found. By reading the writings of the most interesting minds in history, we meditate with our own minds and theirs as well. This to me is a miracle.

Kurt Vonnegut

And if our book consumption remains as low as it has been, at least let us admit that it is because reading is a less exciting pastime than going to the dogs, the pictures or the pub, and not because books, whether bought or borrowed, are too expensive.

George Orwell

We should read to give our souls a chance to luxuriate.

Henry Miller

Books have to be read (worse luck it takes so long a time). It is the only way of discovering what they contain. A few savage tribes eat them, but reading is the only method of assimilation revealed to the West.
Knowing you have something good to read before bed is among the most pleasurable of sensations.

Vladimir Nabokov

Margaret Atwood

Reading and writing, like everything else, improve with practice. And, of course, if there are no young readers and writers, there will shortly be no older ones. Literacy will be dead, and democracy – which many believe goes hand in hand with it – will be dead as well.
  • Margaret Atwood
The one way of tolerating existence is to lose oneself in literature as in a perpetual orgy.

Gustave Flaubert

Book collecting is an obsession, an occupation, a disease, an addiction, a fascination, an absurdity, a fate. It is not a hobby. Those who do it must do it.

Jeanette Winterson

Virginia Woolf

When the Day of Judgment dawns and people, great and small, come marching in to receive their heavenly rewards, the Almighty will gaze upon the mere bookworms and say to Peter, ‘Look, these need no reward. We have nothing to give them. They have loved reading.’
  • Virginia Woolf
Perhaps the greatest reading pleasure has an element of self-annihilation. To be so engrossed that you barely know you exist.
I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for?

Franz Kafka

Zadie Smith by Eamonn McCabe

When you practice reading, and you work at a text, it can only give you what you put into it. It’s an old moral, but it’s completely true.
  • Zadie Smith
Albums still matter. Like books and Black lives, albums still matter
Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.
I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book.
Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another’s skin, another’s voice, another’s soul.

Joyce Carol Oates

A book is really like a lover. It arranges itself in your life in a way that is beautiful.

Maurice Sendak

F Scott Fitzgerald

That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.

F Scott Fitzgerald

I used books as alternate worlds for a long time. I still do. I have dozens of reasons for why I love reading: one of them is that finding yourself wanting to hang out in the world created by a writer is one of the coolest feelings ever, although it can be damn uncomfortable. I remember as a teen reading Stephen King novels. While I can’t understand why I was so enamored of his books when I was sixteen and seventeen, I can still remember the sensation of being so frightened that I had no choice but to finish the book I was reading at 3am because, otherwise, I would not be able to get to sleep. I needed to get to the end of the book in order to feel resolution. I remember when reading Salem’s Lot that my dad stuck his head in my bedroom door at around midnight to find out if I intended to go to sleep on a school night. I explained to him that I was too frightened to sleep, and book lover that he was, my father seemed to understand perfectly.

fingerlakeswanderer

I’ve always read in order to experience another reality. I remember reading Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor and feeling frozen through and through. Same with some of the sequences in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Berniere. Someone once accused me of living more in my head than in the real world. Not so. I do love to disappear into a novel though.

Sara Richards

I read to lose myself and find myself at the same time.

Imani Mosley

Why do you read? And are there other quotes you love about literature? Let us know in the comments.

Power of Books

Books, magazines and newspapers have become invaluable part of our lives. We read them to entertain and inform ourselves of various matters. Now, it is being said that books may disappear from our life in times to come.

Books are a source of knowledge and entertainment. They are quite popular among the people in society. The basic reason for this is the book power. But it seems slipping from its place of importance. One reason for the disappearing of books from our lives can be said the impact of Internet. It seems like a potential rival to books

The new generation people view the traditional printed books as old and cumbersome demanding considerable time and attention. They feel it easier to hit some keys on the computer and quickly surf the relevant information.

It is hard to escape the charm of a printed book because the written words spark images and evoke metaphors that derive much of their meaning from the readers’ imagination and experience.

It can be said that thinking the future of the books is really like thinking of the future of our society and its cultural heritage. Because books are a part of memories of human mind and also help in making an enlightened society.

Will the books die? Or, will we be able to relate to the coming of the digital/electronic books? That’s something what only time will tell.

When we read a book, we get to learn about the struggles and hardships of various characters. Sometimes we even relate those situations to our personal lives. Understanding the situations of the characters of a book and how they overcome difficult times and challenges gives you the courage and confidence to deal with your problems. Also, a well-read person will always have more knowledge about various topics that will equip that person better for social situations and for holding conversations with groups of people.

Ever wondered what the word for loving the smell of old books is? It’s called Bibliosmia.

Another reason for reflecting on the importance of books in our life is that reading books comes with a wide range of mental and physical benefits. Reading can expand your vocabulary and communication skills which can help you interact better with people. Also, reading is an effective way of boosting your memory and enhancing your focus. Reading books makes you empathetic because when you engage with fictional characters and understand their situations, it leaves a strong impact on your capacity to empathize with people. Having an empathetic attitude helps you grow into a better person.

The importance of books in our lives is not limited to the knowledge it provides us. Books also bring change in our personality, develop us into our better selves and give us lessons to cherish lifelong. Here are some of them:

  • Self-confidence
  • A better understanding of yourself
  • Emotionally strong and expressive
  • Mental visualization
  • Sense of identity
  • Keeping a wild imagination
  • Always staying curious

The Power of Ideals commentary on New York Review of Books essay

A recent New York Review of Books essay by Tamsin Shaw , which included comments about The Power of Ideals and several other books, has stimulated a great deal of attention and controversy. At the center of Shaw’s essay is the claim that psychologists who study morality assume that psychological expertise and research are all that’s needed to distinguish between morally good and bad values, decisions, and behaviors.

We found it odd that she would level this criticism at The Power of Ideals, because we are explicit at many points in the book about our belief that these moral distinctions are fundamentally philosophical and conceptual, not empirical. For example, in our chapter on developmental theory, we said: “[T]here’s another point here—an essential philosophy of science point—regarding what’s required for a valid scientific account of human morality. A moral psychology cannot entirely avoid questions of what should be (questions that philosophers call prescriptive or normative). Prescriptive statements always sneak into descriptions of the moral sense, even if authors fail to recognize them. … The question of whether a given change represents an advance, a nondevelopmental change, or a regression must be addressed conceptually …. This kind of analysis brings in values to determine what is most functional and most adaptive, and it will be an analysis that relies on philosophical argumentation rather than empirical validation” (p. 27-28).

Later, in our discussion of faith, we make the point that: “Distinguishing between real and false gods, true and false moral values, wise and foolish pursuits, is not a job for psychologists or other social scientists. These are prescriptive (philosophical and theological) rather than empirical questions, as we discussed in Chapter 2. For our purposes, the best we can do is to select moral exemplars and moral leaders who meet criteria laid out by philosophers and theologians—consistency between moral ends and means, behavior that appears to conform with moral principles that are universalizable, that include a generalized respect for humanity—and then describe the nature of the faith, meaning, or wisdom they exhibit” (p. 162).

It is disappointing that an author writing for a publication as distinguished as the New York Review of Books would fail to give a book careful attention and an accurate reading.

Teachers' Essay

It’s all about teachers thought, experiences and observations of daily school life.

  • Power of Book
  • It gives us knowledge. A book is very useful to us especially in studying or researching some ideas or facts but when the internet became popular, students now search for what they need in computer but books contains better information  yet more cheaper than internet.
  • Books can entertain us when we are bored. Actually it’s true, because when I am bored and nothing to do I just read a story book and I didn’t notice that the time was passing quickly . So try it’s very fun.
  • We can learn many moral lessons. Books also contain good moral lessons especially the story books for kids which teach good manners and right conduct so even you are only a child practice reading books.
  • Reading book is much better than playing computer because you can’t learn anything in playing computer. You just wasting your time and money but in books you will learn a lot.
  • It can also give you some ideas about place, persons, foods, or plants so if you want to know more about anything then read a book.
  • Books can widen your vocabulary if you are weak in spelling there’s a book that can help you in your problem and this is…. Dictionary and take note the dictionary does not only contain spelling but also the meaning of a word.
  • Books have more ideas compare to internet because in internet it only contains the summary of what you are looking for. So you better consult first the book before internet.
  • You can also use books in reviewing. The reason is not all the lessons you learn in school is on the internet.
  • Books are good teacher to students. Do you know why? Because teachers also refer on books and can also teach a lot on students.
  • Books can also widen your imaginations. Because when you read a story you are thinking the actions that happened on the story especially the story that has no pictures. So if you want to widen up your imagination go on read a book and it is totally fun.

These are my 10 reasons why all of us should read a book. And even you are only child you must learn how to read a book because when you grow up it can help you many times. So if you are not reading a book well try it’s very entertaining, fun and interesting.

Book Review: Memoirist Lilly Dancyger’s penetrating essays explore the power of female friendships

Who means more to you — your friends or your lovers? In a vivid, thoughtful and nuanced collection of essays, Lilly Dancyger explores the powerful role that female friendships played in her chaotic upbringing marked by her parents’ heroin use and her father’s untimely death when she was only 12.

“First Love: Essays on Friendship” begins with a beautiful paean to her cousin Sabina, who was raped and murdered at age 20 on her way home from a club. As little kids, their older relatives used to call them Snow White and Rose Red after the Grimm’s fairy tale, “two sisters who are not rivals or foils, but simply love each other.”

That simple, uncomplicated love would become the template for a series of subsequent relationships with girls and women that helped her survive her self-destructive adolescence and provided unconditional support as she scrambled to create a new identity as a “hypercompetent” writer, teacher and editor. “It’s true that I’ve never been satisfied with friendships that stay on the surface. That my friends are my family, my truest beloveds, each relationship a world of its own,” she writes in the title essay “First Love.”

The collection stands out not just for its elegant, unadorned writing but also for the way she effortlessly pivots between personal history and spot-on cultural criticism that both comments on and critiques the way that girls and women have been portrayed — and have portrayed themselves — in the media, including on online platforms like Tumblr and Instagram.

This cover image released by Norton shows "This Strange Eventful History" by Claire Messud. (Norton via AP)

For instance, she examines the 1994 Peter Jackson film, “Heavenly Creatures,” based on the true story of two teenage girls who bludgeoned to death one of their mothers. And in the essay “Sad Girls,” about the suicide of a close friend, she analyzes the allure of self-destructive figures like Sylvia Plath and Janis Joplin to a certain type of teen, including herself, who wallows in sadness and wants to make sure “the world knew we were in pain.”

In the last essay, “On Murder Memoirs,” Dancyger considers the runaway popularity of true crime stories as she tries to explain her decision not to attend the trial of the man charged with killing her cousin — even though she was trained as a journalist and wrote a well-regarded book about her late father that relied on investigative reporting. “When I finally sat down to write about Sabina, the story that came out was not about murder at all,” she says. “It was a love story.”

Readers can be thankful that it did.

  • Essay on Reading Books

The habit of Reading Books is considered to be one of the most elite habits of all. Books are the means to store precious information either in a textual or pictorial manner. A book is such a wonderful and magnificent object that it takes a whole different amount of passion and discipline to construct a book and the same passion to study and sink that knowledge within. Here are a few sample essays on reading books.

100 Words Essay on Reading Books

200 words essay on reading books, 500 words essay on reading books.

Essay on Reading Books

Reading books is an incredible experience that can transport you to different worlds, introduce you to new ideas and cultures, and broaden your understanding of the world. It's a form of escape from the daily routine, and a way to engage with characters, stories and events that would not be possible in real life. Whether you prefer fiction or nonfiction, books have the power to challenge, inspire, and entertain. With the turn of each page, you gain new knowledge, develop empathy, and engage in introspection. Reading books is a lifelong journey of discovery and growth that can enrich your life in countless ways.

Reading books is an activity that has been enjoyed by people of all ages and cultures for centuries. This pastime offers numerous benefits, both for individuals and society as a whole.

One of the most significant benefits of reading books is the improvement of one's cognitive skills . By reading, we engage our brains, and the more we read, the more we exercise our cognitive abilities, including our ability to concentrate, comprehend, and retain information. This leads to enhanced problem-solving skills, better memory and a greater ability to understand complex concepts.

Another benefit of reading books is the expansion of one's knowledge and understanding of the world. Through reading, we have the opportunity to gain insights into different cultures, time periods, and ways of life. This can broaden our perspectives and help us become more informed and understanding citizens of the world. In addition, books can challenge our beliefs and assumptions, providing opportunities for personal growth and intellectual development.

Reading books is also a great form of entertainment . Whether we are reading a mystery, a romance, or a science-fiction novel, books can provide hours of escape and enjoyment. They allow us to immerse ourselves in different worlds, meet new characters, and experience new emotions. This form of entertainment provides a welcome break from the stresses of daily life and can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

The habit of reading books is not just a hobby but a complete lifestyle . The way it brings development in one’s character and personality from within is just magical. The importance of reading is to give people the ability to self-study but has numerous other benefits. When you read, you explore your true prospect of thinking. You get the venture of how the same lines could deliver a brand new set of thoughts and pictures in your mind just with a little change in the emotions. This is the kind of self-exploration reading provides.

Having a diverse set of knowledge can be of great help as it removes the bar of limited knowledge . Every social group has a different set of interests and by consuming all of that in yourself, you allow yourself to become a part of any group easily. A person who consumes more knowledge is considered the wisest. Your ideas are what draws people to you, wanting them to listen more and makes you one of the interesting people they interact with.

Reading is the most important means of human-to-human communication and getting to know different cultures, leading to the development and maturation of human language abilities, and is the source of development and mature human personality. Reading is very important to increase self-confidence, develop and strengthen character by acquiring a wealth of information and experience that a person needs in all areas of life, and to become an educated person. Not everyone in their lives gets the gift of knowledge and the ability to comprehend what they are looking at. Not everyone is privileged enough to be able to widen their knowledge without the help of someone else.

Reading is an art, and to have this art is equal to having the greatest weapon in your hand. No one can steal your ability to read once you learn it. You become free to consume knowledge about any topic you like.

Significance of Reading

Reading leads to the expansion of human thinking and intellectual capacities and strengthens your spirit. Every genre teaches something whether it is fictional or non-fictional. When fiction teaches you to imagine, self-help teaches you how to live life to the fullest. Reading is not limited to books only, you can read wherever you want, whatever you want and whenever you want and it all will be worth it. Knowledge is never known to be a curse and what is not a curse, is always beneficial.

My Reading Experience

The kind of books that got me into reading are self-help books. They inspired me in a way no other genre could. The writer Mark Manson is the greatest of all time to me. If you'll just search for self-help books over the internet then among the best sellers, two of the books would be his. The kind of discipline they brought into my life transformed me into a completely different person. These kinds of books give us an opportunity to dive deep into ourselves and learn about our true potential which is what happened to me and brought me into writing.

The Power of Now Summary and Key Lessons

“The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment” is a bestselling self-help book written by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle. First published in 1997, the book aims to introduce readers to their “true selves” beyond the constraints of the mind and the ego.

The central thesis is that the present moment—“the Now”—is the only reality, and we suffer when we focus on the past or future rather than being present. Tolle argues that psychological pain is the result of identification with our minds, which he describes as a kind of false self, or “ego”.

By disassociating from the ego, one can achieve enlightenment and live in a state of peace and fulfillment.

The Power of Now Summary

In the first section of the book, Tolle introduces the concept of the “ pain-body ” — a manifestation of all the accumulated pain we hold due to unresolved psychological trauma.

He suggests that this pain-body can take over our thoughts and actions, leading us to repeat patterns of negativity and suffering. To overcome the control of the pain-body, Tolle argues that we must become aware of it and observe it without judgment . This act of mindfulness allows us to separate ourselves from the pain and begin healing.

Tolle then delves into the workings of the mind and how it often dominates our perception of time. He describes how the mind tends to dwell on past events and anticipate future problems, robbing us of the peace that can only be found in the present moment . He asserts that the mind, while useful, can also create an illusion of separateness from our true selves and the world around us.

By recognizing the tricks our mind plays on us, we can start to experience the present more fully and find a sense of oneness with life.

In his exploration of the concept of time, Tolle discusses how the past and future are often mental constructs that keep us from experiencing the fullness of life.

He encourages us to observe the mind and become aware of how often thoughts drift to what has been or what might be. By doing so, we can start to lessen the grip that these thoughts have on us and free ourselves to experience the joy of being.

Tolle emphasizes that this state of presence is not something to be achieved in the future but is accessible to us right here and now.

Finally, Tolle discusses the transformative power that comes from embracing the now.

He suggests that when we align ourselves with the present, we align with the power that created all existence . This realization can bring about a profound sense of peace and contentment, as we no longer feel the need to seek happiness in external circumstances . We can then live our lives with greater ease, grace, and gratitude, regardless of what may come our way.

The Power of Now Summary and Key Lessons

Key Lessons

1. the importance of present-moment awareness.

“The Power of Now” emphasizes the significance of living in the present moment. According to Eckhart Tolle, our minds are often caught in loops of regretful recollections or anxious anticipations.

This obsession with the past or future prevents us from experiencing life in the present moment, which is the only real time we can be sure of.

For instance, if we’re continuously troubled by an embarrassing incident from the past, we’re not truly living in the present.

Similarly, if we’re anxious about an upcoming event , our focus is skewed toward the future, not the present. By focusing our consciousness on the now, we can better control our thoughts and emotions , leading to a more peaceful and balanced existence.

2. Acceptance as a Key to Inner Peace

Another essential lesson from “The Power of Now” is the importance of acceptance. Tolle suggests that most of our inner turmoil is the result of resistance to what is.

By accepting the present moment as it is, we alleviate unnecessary suffering . This doesn’t mean we should become complacent or resign ourselves to unfavorable circumstances; instead , it’s about finding peace in the current moment and acting from this place of serenity.

Consider a situation where someone is stuck in traffic. One reaction might be to become frustrated, angry, or stressed . However, Tolle suggests accepting the situation as it is, realizing that the traffic is beyond your control. From this acceptance, you can then calmly consider your options—perhaps using the time to listen to an audiobook or practice a mindfulness exercise.

3. Ego Identification and Its Pitfalls

“The Power of Now” offers deep insights into the nature of the ego—the self-constructed identity based on past experiences and future expectations.

Tolle explains that the ego is responsible for much of the pain we experience, as it thrives on separation, judgment, and resistance . Being overly identified with our ego can lead to destructive patterns of thought and behavior.

For instance, consider a scenario where someone criticizes your work. If you’re heavily ego-identified, you may react defensively or take the criticism personally, causing unnecessary stress or conflict . However, if you recognize that the criticism is not a personal attack but rather an evaluation of your work, you can respond objectively and use the feedback for improvement.

4. The Power of Inner Stillness

Eckhart Tolle extols the power of inner stillness—achievable through practices such as meditation or simply being in the present moment. By cultivating a sense of inner quiet, we can access deeper levels of consciousness and wisdom.

Tolle describes this state as being “in the world, but not of it”, highlighting the transformative power of quieting our thoughts and becoming aware of the present.

For example, Tolle illustrates the experience of observing a beautiful sunset. Rather than getting caught up in attempting to capture the moment with a camera or constructing narratives around it, he suggests simply witnessing the spectacle in silent awe.

This experience of deep stillness connects us to our true selves and the world around us, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and peace.

Final Thoughts

In summary, “The Power of Now” is a timeless masterpiece that has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach life.

Through Tolle’s illuminating teachings, we are invited to embrace the present moment fully, transcend the limitations of the mind, and discover the profound beauty and peace that lie within us all.

Whether you are seeking personal transformation, inner peace, or simply a deeper understanding of the human experience, this book is a must-read that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on your life.

Journal of Materials Chemistry A

High-efficiency ultrathin flexible organic solar cells with a bilayer hole transport layer.

Abstracts: The storage stability and mechanical durability are two key parameters for the application of flexible organic solar cells (OSCs), which are considered a promising power source for wearable electronics. However, most of the high-efficiency flexible OSCs are fabricated based on the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transport layer, which hinders the long-term operation, especially under cyclic bending or stretching. Herein, we develop an ultrathin flexible OSC (with a total thickness of less than 2 μm) based on the bilayer hole transport layer, incorporating a MoO3 interlayer between the PEDOT:PSS and ITO, which can simultaneously improve the efficiency, storage stability and mechanical stability of ultrathin flexible OSCs. The ultrathin OSC based on the bilayer HTL achieves a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.0% and a power-per-weight ratio of 39.3 W/g, compared to single-layer HTL devices with a PCE of 16.4%. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest efficiency among all ITO-based ultrathin OSCs. Furthermore, the best-performed ultrathin OSCs show PCE retentions of 89% and 84% after 1000 cycles of bending (with a bending radius of 1 mm) and 1000 cycles of stretching/compression tests, respectively.
