What was once a simple idea is now a global phenomenon! Electronic commerce went through an astonishing growth with the help of entrepreneurs and organizations that were determined to change the idea of brick-and-mortar trade and offer a more convenient way of shopping.

From a small concept in someone’s garage to “more than $3 TRILLION in sales in 2019”

In addition to the human factor, the rise of the internet and technological advancements such as desktop computers played a huge role in spreading the idea of online trading.

Ecommerce Timeline

The concept of buying and selling goods or services on the internet has been around long before the introduction of the first web browser - 21 years earlier to be exact!

It offered a different shopping experience compared to what we find today in most online stores but it was the needed precursor out of which modern-day ecommerce emerged.

1969 - Launch: CompuServe

Commonly referred to as the “first major American ecommerce company”, CompuServe Information Service (CIS) completely dominated the industry throughout the 1980s and in the early 1990s.

The company was founded by 2 engineering students and it offered software libraries and online games in addition to message forums and chat systems. It generated a lot of revenue by selling connectivity using their proprietary network.

1979 - Invention: Electronic shopping by Michael Aldrich

A British inventor and entrepreneur dubbed as the “creator of online shopping”. In some sense, Aldrich is the father of modern of ecommerce since he made data sharing possible and thus enabled online transactions.

He invented the Teleputer which is (in simple terms) a combination of a telephone, a computer, and a television. Soon after, his technology was adopted by mass consumers and businesses.

1992 - Launch: Book Stacks Unlimited

Probably the first online marketplace! It was introduced 2 years after the launch of web browsers and 3 years before Amazon .

The bookstore moved to the internet in 1994 becoming Books.com and was acquired by Barnes & Noble a few years later.

1995 - Launch: Amazon , eBay , and DoubleClick

Two of the most recurring names in the world of ecommerce, Jeff Bezos - who went on to become the world’s wealthiest man - launched Amazon which was primarily focused on selling books. That same year, Pierre Omidyar introduced AuctionWeb and later on changed its name to eBay .

1995 was all about debuts! In addition to the 2 marketplaces mentioned above, DoubleClick was founded and it offered online ad services to big corporations such as Coca-Cola , Microsoft , General Motors , Apple , Nike , among others.

1998 - Launch: PayPal

Before it became the giant we know today, PayPal was an online money transfer tool called Confinity . It wasn’t until the year 2000 when Elon Musk transformed it into a (back then) one of a kind online payment system.

1999 - Launch: Alibaba

AliExpress is now the most prominent online marketplace in China and one of the largest players in the world. It is a subsidiary of Alibaba Group which has become one of the biggest ecommerce, internet, and artificial intelligence companies as well as venture capital firms in less than 20 years.

2000 - Launch: Google AdWords and Walmart

At the beginning of the new millennium, Google was receiving huge traction as it was becoming the world’s most used search engine. It was no surprise that it launched its own online ad service, AdWords , allowing businesses to spread their advertisements all over the internet.

That same year, Walmart , the international retail conglomerate, moved its services online.

2002 - Acquisition: eBay buys stocks in PayPal

The acclaimed payment system accepted to be acquired by eBay during July of that year. The deal was done in eBay stocks and the online marketplace went on to shut down its own payment system Billpoint which was a direct competitor of PayPal .

2004 - Milestone: 27% YoY growth

According to CNN Money , online retail sales were expected to grow by 27% in 2004 to reach $144 billion which is a new record! It’s important to note that this number kept on increasing year after year and is anticipated to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

2006 - Milestone: Facebook advertisements

This is another landmark in the history of ecommerce! The biggest social media platform launched its own advertisements which allowed businesses to promote their services to hundreds of millions of users.

2016 - Acquisition: Alibaba buys Lazada Group

Alibaba expands its grasp over Asia by acquiring the international ecommerce platform Lazada Group which is based in Singapore . It proved to be a mutually beneficial agreement especially since Lazada became the most popular online shopping platform in Southeast Asia.

2017 - Milestone: Instagram shoppable posts and new sales records

Starting 2017, users can now shop directly from Instagram since companies can tag items in their posts. Customers simply click on the image and are redirected to the online store.

That’s not all, Cyber Monday was the highest grossing day in the United States with sales exceeding $6.5 billion. This number, while indeed outstanding, is less than half of what Alibaba did on Singles Day in China the year before - breaking all the records with more than $17 billion in sales.

2018 - Acquisition: Walmart buys Flipkart

The retail conglomerate did not hesitate to venture into the Asian market by becoming the largest stakeholder in the Indian ecommerce company Flipkart . Walmart paid around $16 billion to acquire 77% of the company’s shares.

2019 - Milestone: $3.5 Trillion dollars

You can now find anything you need on the internet which explains why online shopping continues to grow year after year as it reached around $3.5 trillion in 2019.

The first step to optimizing your Instagram bio is to add a searchable keyword on the name field and the username.

Ideally, whenever users type a keyword or a name on the Instagram search field, the app populates results based on your username to determine the most relevant search results.

Search results are matched by text. Using an Instagram username or profile name that’s related to the content of your posts is your best bet for showing up in relevant searches.

For example, if you are an artist, you may want to include your job title along with your full name on the username or the name field. That way, people searching for you or your services on Instagram can find your account easily.

While adding keywords on your username and name field makes you discoverable, the Instagram bio is also a great place to add keywords you want to rank for.

Typically, using keywords on your Instagram may not directly help you become more discoverable on the app, but will give your account more focus and connect you with like-minded followers.

When describing your business on the Instagram bio section, include secondary and primary keywords:

Primary keywords are the main words describing your business. For example, for a landscaping expert, “gardener” might be the primary keyword.

  Short story: Online shopping is the future of shopping which is fast evolving in the present. But online shopping didn’t develop overnight. Certain breakthroughs led to its development; these are the historical frameworks that make online shopping the easiest form of shopping. Read to know more. 

Before we dissect the history of online shopping, it’s important to know that the present is only made possible by the past. To fully understand the potential of online shopping in the modern world, we have to go way back in time to the date it emerged and bloomed. What is online shopping anyway; how was it conceived and what led to its present popularity?

What is Online Shopping?

In simple words, online shopping is a unique form of electronic commerce (known as ecommerce) which connects customers and sellers on all corners of the internet with the use of a web browser. Today, it is not uncommon to come across online stores that present a range of products, along with specifications, features, photos and prices to prospective customers.

As a result there are two forms an online shop could take. First is as a B2C store which connects business-to-customers. Second is as a B2B online store which connects business-to-business. Either way, every human with access to the Worldwide Web has engaged in online shopping. 

History of Online Shopping

  • Electronic shopping was invented by an English inventor called Michael Aldrich . In 1979 , he invented the earliest form of e-commerce which allowed online transaction processing between business and customers, as well as between business and business. 
  • The invention of the first ever web browser, i.e. the World Wide Web in 1990 is the second major proponent of online shopping. Without an interconnected internet, there would be no online marketplace at all. We owe this marvellous invention called the ‘WWW’ to Tim Berners Lee . That man is the major reason why millions of people have access to the internet which hosts numerous e-commerce platforms.
  • After the establishment of these two very important platforms, the expansion of online shopping was only imminent. In 1994 , Netscape developed an encryption-based internet security protocol called SSL – or Secure Sockets Layer. Just ask any ecommerce owner how important an SSL certificate is for business. 
  • Okay, we’ll break it down here. You see, an SSL makes it difficult or impossible for the exchange of information on the internet to be intercepted. When buying something online, you are required to send sensitive details directly to the online shop. This means that you’re sending private information like credit card details routers to servers. SSL ensures your data isn’t stored by any crooked servers on transmission.
  • Because of its security, SSL is always required for basically all financial transactions online.
  • 1995 welcomed the biggest transformation of online shopping. The first online marketplaces were established. First came Amazon.com , arguably the biggest online marketplace launched by Jeff Bezos —yup, the richest man in the world as of 2019 with an estimated net worth of $115 billion.
  • Can’t be a monopoly, so eBay.com joined the party. At the time eBay was called AuctionWeb—good thing they changed the name.
  • All these online marketplaces with no reliable payment gateway. It is 1998 , PayPal gets a full swing at the online payment system niche; quickly becomes a success.
  • Once a dream, online shopping was now taking shape. Jack Ma, a failure in many things launched a very prominent Chinese marketplace in 1999 called Alibaba.com . You know the one.
  • At the turn of the 21 st century in 2000 , Google launched Adwords , an advertising service that allows sellers to place adverts in Google search results related to viewers’ search preference. In other words, Google connected sellers to buyers on a greater scale.
  • Another subtle yet huge idea changed the world of online shopping forever. In 2004 , Shopify , a prominent online storefront service made it possible for low-capital sellers to set up online stores. Shopify is to online stores as WordPress is to websites.
  • In 2006 , PayPal launched a new way for people to exchange money and buy things they want online directly from their cell phones.
  • As of 2020, it’s clear to see that the entire internet is now a virtual shopping mall. With people choosing to carry out trades on Instagram, Whatsapp and Facebook, it’s safe to say that we are in the online shopping era. 

Future of Online Shopping

All well and good but exactly how far can online shopping go? Will it replace the traditional way of shopping at malls? Yes it can. In fact, online shopping has all the precepts to become ‘shopping’ itself. 

While in-store retail still enjoys some patronisation, there has been a general shift to ecommerce and all with good reason. The future of ecommerce is now upon us. Eventually, online shopping will replace in-store retail for certain products. In time, shopping will mean ‘online’.

First, credit is due to technological changes that continue to push the online shopping agenda. These technological inventions are blockchain, cryptocurrency, voice search, augmented reality and virtual reality.

  • Blockchain – Many statistics point to the potential of blockchain simplifying the way payments, transactions and records are handled. Blockchain is the future. Decentralisation, immutability, and transparency are key elements of blockchain; everything online shopping needs to succeed.
  • Cryptocurrency – A cryptocurrency is a digital currency that is created and managed through the use of advanced encryption techniques known as cryptography. Cryptocurrency operates on blockchain technology. For online shopping to be the only marketplace in the world, there should be a common global currency, not competing national currencies.
  • Voice Search – An extension of AI, voice search automates tasks. Software and devices like Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple’s Siri now makes it easier to participate in ecommerce trade. Never do you have to type the products you need into a search engine. By using voice search, you can get easy access to products on the internet with minimal stress.
  • Augmented Reality – The biggest problem online shopping faces till today is the distance it puts between the customer and product. Customers are reluctant to buy an item that they cannot experience first-hand. Being a computer enhanced view of the physical world, augmented reality (AR) allows customers to test and explore products online in ways similar to real life experience.
  • Virtual Reality – Siblings with AR, virtual reality (VR) could also improve online shopping. Because VR is a simulated experience of the real word, similar or different, it allows for the following online shopping possibilities:
  • The creation of assessable virtual showrooms or virtual stores
  • Customers will be able to virtually visualise products.
  • VR can keep the customers coming back.

If you own a physical store somewhere on earth or outer space, it’s about time you considered a transition to online trade. We aren’t very far from a global online shopping space. No longer will people have to queue up in stores to buy a product that may not be in stock. People can now make quality purchases from their comfort zones.

Taylor Swift fans have a few more weeks to wait until her new album is released , but Swifties can spring for a new Taylor-inspired book in the meantime, that’s topping the charts online.

Though it’s written for children ages 8-12, the new book is suitable for fans of all ages, and makes a great gift idea too.

Listed at a suggested manufacturer’s price of $6.99, Amazon has the new Taylor Swift biography on sale for just $5 as of this writing. The 112-page book is available on paperback, hardcover, for Kindle and as an audiobook on Audible (which you can listen to free with a free trial to Audible here ).

While this isn’t an official release from Swift’s camp, the book does hail from publishers Penguin Workshop, whose best-selling Who Was? series tells the stories of “important scientists, artists, writers, athletes, changemakers, and musicians,” in “inviting and digestible packages” for middle-grade readers.

As the publisher notes detail, “Since the release of her self-titled debut album in 2006, Taylor Swift has dominated the music charts, reinvented her sound, won numerous awards, shaken off public criticism, and spoken up for herself and others. Whether you’re a lifelong Swiftie or someone who just loves learning about musicians, this enchanting book will teach you all about the experiences that helped Taylor Swift become the successful superstar many kids and adults looks up to.”

Who Is Taylor Swift? is written by Kirsten Anderson, whose other titles include  Who Is Zendaya?  and  Who Is Kamala Harris? The young adult book also features illustrations from Gregory Copeland, an award-winning artists whose work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators New York, Communication Arts Illustration Annual, and 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide, among others.

The book comes on the heels of an unofficial Taylor Swift fan journal that was released last year, in the middle of the singer’s record-breaking Eras Tour.

My husband always teases me that I single-handedly keep Amazon in business with my relentless stream of orders. While certainly a very loyal customer, I am just one of more than 300 million estimated active users worldwide who helped Amazon generate a staggering $574 billion in net revenue in 2023.

The giant of online shopping, Amazon stands as the undisputed champion of convenience in the modern retail landscape. With millions of products available in one click and delivered to your doorstep, is there any need for us to set foot in a physical store at all? Join me as I delve into this intriguing conundrum, uncovering the value and evolving role of brick-and-mortar retail in an era dominated by digital convenience.

Convenience Vs. Experiences

Amazon’s unparalleled convenience, vast array of products, around-the-clock availability and competitive pricing have cemented its position as the go-to destination for millions of shoppers worldwide. With just a few clicks, consumers can have their desired items delivered within days—if not hours. This level of accessibility and efficiency is undeniably appealing, making it easy to see why Amazon has become synonymous with modern-day convenience.

However, while Amazon undoubtedly responds to consumers’ demand for speed, ease and self-service, it doesn’t present the sensory engagement that brick-and-mortar establishments can offer. (How excited do you get at the sight of the brown package?)

The ability to see, touch and interact with products in person provides a tactile experience that simply can’t be replicated online. Whether it’s feeling the texture of a fabric, trying on a pair of shoes or sampling a new fragrance, these sensory encounters add depth and richness to the shopping experience—fostering a deeper connection between consumers and the products they purchase.

Let’s not forget that physical stores are places where valuable human interaction happens, from seeking advice to engaging with fellow shoppers, enriching the shopping journey with memorable moments and fostering a sense of community.

While convenience undoubtedly plays a significant role in consumer behavior, I would like to challenge the assumption that it’s the sole determinant. Beyond the practicalities of speed and efficiency, there are deeper emotional and experiential aspects of shopping that resonate with consumers. Catering to these multifaceted preferences is key to success in the modern marketplace.

The Evolving Role Of Physical Stores

As consumer expectations evolve and technology advances, brands need to redefine the value that physical stores can offer—focusing on curating memorable experiences that begin the moment a customer steps inside. No longer merely transactional spaces, the role of physical stores is shifting toward prioritizing engagement over sales. Essentially, it’s about doing what Amazon can’t do.

Experiential retail is at the forefront of this transformation, where stores are becoming immersive environments that wow consumers with captivating and shareable experiences that extend beyond traditional shopping. We worked with iconic British department store Harrods to deploy innovative 3D holographic displays , showcasing a prime example of how retailers can successfully use their store space to increase footfall, drive brand affiliation and, ultimately, boost sales.

Creating a buzz around your retail business could start with an eye-catching—perhaps even interactive—display that will captivate passers-by, making a strong first impression and converting them into store visitors. Once inside, grab their attention with personalized, engaging experiences that forge emotional connections with your customers.

Why not incorporate social media into your store environment by displaying user-generated content (UGC) or hosting livestreams and events? We know that especially the younger generations (i.e., Gen Y and Gen Z) are longing for experiences they can share on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Another idea to engage your customers on a more personal level is to host interactive workshops, classes or events tailored to your target audience’s interests and hobbies. Whether it’s a cooking demonstration, DIY crafting session or beauty workshop, providing hands-on experiences promotes a sense of community and belonging among shoppers.

Embracing experiential retail and creating immersive environments pays off. Brands can not only differentiate themselves, foster loyalty and drive engagement beyond mere transactions, but they can also improve the bottom line. A November 2021 report from McKinsey found that companies that excel in personalization see a 40% increase in revenue from these efforts compared to their average counterparts.

The Power Of Omnichannel Retail

The true power of omnichannel retail lies in its ability to bridge the gap between the convenience of online shopping and the immersive experience of in-store visits.

Successful omnichannel approaches seamlessly integrate physical and digital experiences to create a cohesive brand narrative. Sephora’s Virtual Artist feature employs AR technology for makeup trials, enhancing both in-store and mobile app experiences. Similarly, MAC’s makeup studio offers personalized makeup consultations and tutorials in-store, seamlessly integrating these experiential elements with its online platform for a cohesive brand experience.

Meanwhile, the Nike Membership program integrates seamlessly with Nike’s mobile app and physical store locations, allowing members to access exclusive product launches, personalized recommendations and in-store experiences.

As brands navigate this omnichannel landscape, embracing innovation and creativity in physical stores becomes paramount. By leveraging technology and design, retailers can enhance the overall shopping experience—increasing in-store traffic, fostering brand loyalty and boosting sales.

Whether through interactive digital displays, personalized product recommendations or experiential in-store events, successful omnichannel retailers create seamless transitions between the physical and digital worlds, providing customers with a truly immersive and engaging shopping experience.

The 2024 Masters Golf Tournament is here. Many of the best golfers in the country — 88 of them to be exact — will meet at the Augusta National Golf Club, marking the first major stop on the PGA Tour .

The 2024 Masters kicked off on Thursday, Apr. 11 and will run through Sunday, Apr. 14. While there will be around 40,000 people in Augusta to see the anticipated tournament in person, this is also one of the most exclusive tournaments to get tickets to, with limited attendance. Tickets are sold in a selection process that you have to apply for the summer before and any available Masters passes are selling for thousands of dollars online.

All eyes will be on Scottie Scheffler as he aims to secure his second green jacket this week. His dominance on the course this year is undeniable, having secured two victories in the last three starts. Scheffler will play with Rory McIlroy, who is seeking his first Master’s victory to complete his career Grand Slam, and Xander Schuaffelle who is seeking is first major tour win. Jordan Spieth is also a top contender this week as he seeks his fourth major and second green jacket.
