I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies. And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles uploaded by some random user. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies that are actually managed by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch Proximity and Twilight ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: The Truman Show, Stephen King's: A Good Marriage, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days , and Blast From the Past.

Something you can't get with YouTube, but that is supported by most of these movie sites, is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free movies. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't know what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that it not only lets you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Another great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but others have full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Hollywood Icons, The King of Horror, 00s Replay, and Cult Films are a few examples.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Good Burger, Eurotrip, School of Rock, and The Defender.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern-looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for example, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals and list some titles by a common theme; I've seen Disaster Movie Madness, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too; I've seen Feel Good Films , Based On a True Story, Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, and Midnight Movies .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists Cruel Intentions, Movie 43, A Haunted House, Snowpiercer , and others.

Here are some collections I've seen that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, Asia's Top Cinema, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema . Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most-watched movies are Frankenstein Created Bikers , The Maid, The Babysitters , and Raven. Some trending titles over this last month include The Frame and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include Fools in Love, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Environment, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists, and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Best Apps for Finding Where Shows and Movies Are Streaming

Free apps and websites now search hundreds of channels and services to help you find favorite films and programs

These apps can help solve a modern problem—finding out where your favorite shows and movies are streaming.

Here’s an issue that’s become a bone of contention between my wife and me: We want to watch a TV show or film that’s streaming but can’t remember whether it’s on a  subscription service , such as Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, or Netflix;  a free service , such as Pluto TV or Tubi; or one of the network apps, such as Max, Paramount+, or Peacock. I don’t mind searching around a bit, but my wife finds sifting through each service painfully tedious.

There are easier ways to find out what’s streaming.

Streaming media players , including Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Roku, will look through various services to find specific titles. Many smart TVs now do the same. But the search functions aren’t always easy to use, and they can be limited in what they find. And so, I often rely on free websites and mobile apps that do a much better job of hunting.

A few years ago, there were maybe a dozen apps or websites from which to choose, but the options have narrowed. Right now, I mainly use two: JustWatch and Reelgood , though I have tried out three more, TV Time , Watchworthy , and a newer app called Qewd . I haven’t yet spent all that much time with Qewd, but it does have some interesting social features.

All five of these free tools search across multiple streaming services as well as some “TV Everywhere” apps that let you stream content that you’re already paying for through a cable or satellite TV subscription.

Here’s how they compare.

Website, and Android and iOS Apps

JustWatch has upped its game in recent years, greatly expanding by acquiring rival GoWatchIt. It has a large list of supported subscription services, including newer ones such as Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock. It also works with several free ad-supported ones.

The service is easy to use: You enter the movie or show you want to watch and JustWatch will tell you where you can stream it. If it’s available to rent or buy, it will show you where to find the lowest price. JustWatch will also make movie and TV show recommendations based on what people with similar tastes are watching.

The site’s home page shows you what’s new and popular. You can add TV shows and movies to your watchlist by using a bookmark icon, and you can limit searches to services you already use by choosing them from a row of icons. A feature called TV Show Tracking lets you track shows you’ve started watching or saved to your watchlist. If you’ve watched all the episodes of a show, you can get an alert when a new episode or season becomes available.

JustWatch organizes titles in dozens of ways, including by genre, what’s highly rated or trending, and what’s new to a service. It can even offer selections based on what mood you’re in. Now that many movie theaters are open again, JustWatch also shows you the top five movies currently playing, and provides alerts when they become available for streaming on one of your services.

JustWatch now has a Play on TV feature, which lets you choose and play content for your television right from the smartphone app. You need to have JustWatch apps on both your smartphone and the TV for that to work, and both need to be signed on to the same WiFi network. You choose the program or movie on the smartphone app, tap Play on TV, and the JustWatch TV app launches the selected streaming service. The TV app is available for Android and Google TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, LG and Samsung smart TVs, and Xbox consoles. It also works with Roku devices using the smartphone app by itself; you don’t need the JustWatch app on the Roku.

You can access JustWatch using a web browser on your computer and through Android and iOS phone apps. One app exclusive is that it can give you daily deal updates on rentals and purchases.

While JustWatch is free, you can opt for a Pro version ($2.50 a month) that removes banner ads, gives you dozens more custom lists beyond the two free ones, and provides enhanced filtering options.

Reelgood has greatly expanded the number of streaming services and TV channels it tracks, too, now covering over 150—and counting. It’s the app I currently use the most.

When you first sign up, you check each of the services you have access to, and Reelgood searches across all of them. (It helped me realize that I now subscribe to a dozen streaming services—yikes!) You can add “free” as a search item, and it will look for free content from networks, along with ad-supported platforms such as Crackle, and PlutoTV.

Reelgood covers all the major subscription services (Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Netflix); niche ones like Acorn TV and Mubi; free services such as Freevee, PlutoTV, and Tubi; and premium channels, such as Max and Showtime. It also includes Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock. Reelgood will also check TV Everywhere channels you can stream if you subscribe to a traditional pay-TV package. There’s even a section where you can find out where to rent or buy newer movies from pay-per-view services such as Amazon, Apple iTunes, and Vudu.

You can browse by title or genre, or simply scroll through rows of recommended content organized under headings such as “Popular Movies," "Trending TV Shows,” “Top 10 This Week," and "2024 Most Anticipated." You also explore what’s new, what’s coming soon, and what’s leaving soon, to help you prioritize what to watch next. Once you find something you want to view, you can add it to your watch list, rate it, see the trailer, or mark it seen. If it’s available, just press the play button and it will launch that service with your show pulled up.

Using the Reelgood app's Play to TV feature, you can click on any content your search turns up to start watching on your smart TV.

The service also lets you follow shows and movies. For TV shows, click “Track Series" on the show’s product card to build a lineup of unwatched episodes. For movies, click the “Want to See” button on a title to add it to a watchlist. Your “Watch Next” section will let you know when new episodes or movies are available.

Reelgood will now remember where you were on programs from more than 150 services, so you can pick up right where you left off.

Reelgood’s Play to TV feature lets you play anything available on the Reelgood app directly on your smart TV just by clicking on the icon. Right now this feature is supported on Android, Fire TV, LG, and Roku smart TVs. When you select a program, it shows you a list of supported devices on your WiFi network, and you simply tap the one where you’d like to play it. You can use the app as a basic TV remote control.

You can access Reelgood online via its website, and it now has apps for both Apple iOS and Google Android smartphones as well as for Apple TV (tvOS), Android and Fire TVs, plus LG smart TVs. There’s no Roku app yet, but you can use the Reelgood mobile app on your phone to control a Roku TV or streaming player.

This service, self-described as a TV show and movie calendar with a strong social element, is newer to me; it lets you track shows and movies, discover which ones you should watch next, and get notifications when new ones that you want to watch become available. You can locate new movies or TV shows using the search bar, or find new content using a Discover icon at the bottom of the page. You can’t, however, watch shows directly from the app.

Every user gets their own profile. When you visit for the first time, you’re asked to pick the shows and movies you either watch or plan to watch from a scrolling list. You can also note where you left off on a TV series, so you’ll start an episode right after the one you viewed, or where you left off in the show if you didn’t finish it.

The app has two main sections: Watchlist, which has the shows and movies you track, and Upcoming, which posts on a calendar when the next episodes or seasons of shows you’re tracking will be available. In addition to tracking content and letting you know where to watch it, you’ll get recommendations based on what you’ve watched. Once you mark a show as watched, you can rate it or attach an emoticon, and indicate your favorite characters.

Using the Discover feature, you can get program recommendations based on the shows or genres you’ve viewed, or see which movies and series are trending among other users of the service. A “Discover More” section lets you filter your search by genre, status, and more. You can also see which shows or movies have been watched by your friends, and what other fans of the show are saying without getting spoilers. You can earn various “badges” for your profile by commenting and interacting with the TV Time community.

When you make a selection, you’ll get sent to the streaming app, but there’s no option to play the program directly on your TV as you can do with other services.

Watchworthy

Android and iOS Apps

Like the other apps,  Watchworthy  allows you to find shows by choosing the services you subscribe to or use. What makes it stand out is that it does a nice job of providing personalized, crowdsourced recommendations from parent company Ranker. You can build a watchlist of shows from TV networks and more than 200 streaming services, including popular ones such as Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, and Netflix. Right now the service doesn’t track movies, but the company says that feature is on its radar.

At the start, you spend about a minute swiping left and right, liking and disliking shows. (You can swipe up if you’re not quite sure.) Then Watchworthy begins to send recommendations based on your responses. Each show on the list of recommendations features a “Worthy” score that predicts how much you’ll love it. (You can find these shows in a "Worthy" section of the app; the higher the Worthy score, the more likely you’ll enjoy the show.) You add recommendations to your watchlist by clicking on a plus sign.

New features include “Worthy Services,” which can help you figure out which streaming services are worth keeping based on their content libraries, and “Watch Together,” which lets you become "friends" with other Watchworthy users to compile a shared watchlist based on everyone’s personal tastes.

Like the other services, Watchworthy lets you limit your results to shows from services you have access to. You can filter shows by air date, streaming service and genre, or even by MPAA rating if you have kids. There are also curated content selections based on themes such as The Weekly Buzz, Workplace Comedies, Funniest Shows, or British Sitcoms, organized by their Worthy score. Once you select a show, you can start watching it either directly from your device or by casting it to your TV.

While the company has been promising to add movie recommendations to the app, that hasn’t happened yet. Right now, Watchworthy is available as either an Android or iOS app, but the company says it will add apps later this year for additional devices, including Amazon Fire, Apple TV, and Roku streaming players.

The newest entry to this group, Qewd is a free app for Android and Apple mobile devices. It not only helps you find where shows and movies are streaming but also adds a social element that lets you get recommendations from your network of friends, family, and even brands and influencers you follow.

When you download the app, you can enter the major streaming platforms you subscribe to and use most often, plus your favorite genres, and then sift through a list of free ad-supported services you use. In addition, users can create and share broad (“favorite comedies”) or specialized (“movies starring Keanu Reeves”) Qewd watchlists. Because Qewd connects to all streaming services it tracks, you can watch shows and movies with a single click.

In addition to helping you find out where shows and movies are streaming, Qewd acts as a “concierge”—the company’s word—that lets you bookmark content, and access and watch all of the services you subscribe to, as well as TikTok and YouTube, directly from the app. And when content jumps from one service to another, Qewd will automatically update its lists, the company says, taking you to the platform that currently has the title.

Qwed offers movie and TV show recommendations, including ones from friends.

Like other apps, Qewd keeps track of what you watch and enjoy so that it can recommend movies and shows for you to try. But to get recommendations from family and friends for the “What Your Friends Are Watching” section, you have to share access to your contacts with Qewd—which not everyone is comfortable doing.

Other features include the ability to collect videos from anywhere on the internet—YouTube, Vimeo, Reddit, Twitter, etc.—and save them in your playlist for playback later. You can also curate personal watchlists and share them with friends, family members, colleagues, or those on social media sites.

A solar storm currently impacting Earth ’s magnetic field is bringing with it the possibility to see aurora borealis and aurora australis at locations in the southern US and elsewhere around the world that are normally far out of range for the Northern Lights. You can boost your chances of seeing the dancing magnetic collisions by using something more sensitive than your eyes: your smartphone or anything else with a camera sensor.

A series of energetic blasts from the sun began arriving Friday night and are now continuing into the weekend. These so-called coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have triggered the first extreme (G5) geomagnetic storm , as determined by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center since 2003. The storm generated aurora seen across the US and beyond. Some were only able to catch a glimpse with the help of some technology most of us carry around all the time.

There’s entire books written on astrophotography (including this free one from NASA ) that will instruct you on how to get dazzling photos like the above, but today I’m more interested in letting the casual skywatcher know your phone may be the best tool to be able to see auroras at all, especially if you’re in a location where they’re rarely visible.

A number of readers shared their best shots from late Friday into Saturday morning.

Simply put, the sensors in your phone or other camera are more sensitive than your eyes.

“Things that the human eye can’t see, your phone can,” explained Brent Gordon at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Gordon says recent geomagnetic storms have yielded photographs of aurora taken in places like Mexico where aurora are rarely ever glimpsed with human retinas.

Pointing your camera at a darkened sky with little cloud cover or light pollution during times of heightened geomagnetic activity could yield “a surprising treat” as Gordon puts it.

To know when to check the sky for the presence of invisible aurora with your camera, you can check the Space Weather Prediction Center’s forecast , or sign up for alerts from a site like SpaceWeather .

Other tips include putting your smartphone camera into night mode, or setting your camera to take longer exposures. For best results, a tripod is also a good idea.

Porn performer Stormy Daniels took the witness stand Tuesday in the hush money case against former President Trump, who looked on as she detailed their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she got to keep it quiet.

Prosecutors allege Trump paid Daniels to keep quiet about the allegations as he ran for president in 2016. Her testimony aired them very publicly as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee seeks to win the White House again.

His lawyers have sought to show that Trump was trying to protect his reputation and family — not his campaign — by shielding them from embarrassing stories about his personal life.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, told jurors that she started exotic dancing in high school and appearing in adult films at age 23, eventually moving to direct more than 150 films and winning a roster of porn industry awards.

Meeting Trump

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner, she said. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff.” He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

Payments for silence

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential, and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter, and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission . She said she learned that Cohen wanted to buy her silence.

Mistrial push

Midway through her testimony, Trump’s lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels’ testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter’s details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered that Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

Cross-examination

Trump’s lawyers tried to attack Daniels’ credibility, suggesting she was motivated by money and that her account has shifted over the years.

“Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” defense lawyer Susan Necheles asked Daniels at one point. Daniels acknowledged she did.

“And you want him to go to jail?” the lawyer asked.

“I want him to be held accountable,” Daniels said. Pressed again whether that meant going to jail, she said: “If he’s convicted.”

The defense pressed Daniels on the fact that she owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees stemming from an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit, and on a 2022 tweet in which she said she “will go to jail before I pay a penny.” Daniels dug in at times in the face of pointed questions, forcefully denying the idea that she had tried to extort money from Trump.

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared. He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

On the way out of the courthouse, Trump called it “a very revealing day.” He didn’t address Daniels’ testimony explicitly but claimed the prosecutors’ case was “totally falling apart.”

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels’ testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, President Biden was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism .

It’s an issue Trump has sought to use against Biden in the campaign by seizing on the protests at college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war .
